CELEBRATING 52 YEARS OF SERVING THE COMMUNITY
Dr. Jill - Healing and Praying By Joseph Green-Bishop Elite News Staff
Some people make up their minds as to their life professions when they are in high school, others while they are students in college. Dr. Jill WaggonerJones, a Dallas family practice physician, decided her life’s mission when she was in elementary school. “When I was a little girl, about six years old, I told people that I wanted to be a doctor,” said Dr. Waggoner-Jones who practices with the Charlton Medical Group on Wheatland Road in…Dallas. ”There were those who encouraged me to become a doctor, but my grandfather, L.T. Waggoner told me that I could become a physician no matter what other people thought.” After graduating from South Oak Cliff H i g h S c h o o l , Wa g g o n e r - J o n e s matriculated at Bishop College where she was a member of the school’s cheer leading squad. While there she received an invitation to compete for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleading team, selected to join the group in 1977.
Church on The Move by Geraldine Davis Hooker There is a children’s story that goes something like this: Once upon a time there was a HARE who bragged how he could run faster than anyone else, and was Geraldine Davis forever teasing a Hooker TO RTO I S E f o r i t s slowness. Then one day, the TORTOISE answered back: “Who do you think you are? There’s no denying you’re swift, but even you can be beaten!” The HARE just laughed. “Beat me running? I bet there’s nobody in the world that can win against me, I’m so fast. Now, why don’t you try?” The TORTOISE finally accepted the challenge. The race was planned, and the next day at dawn they stood at the starting line. The HARE started the race fast. When the HARE saw how slow the TORTOISE was, he decided to take a quick nap. When the HARE woke up from his nap, he started looking for the TORTOISE. When he saw the TORTOISE was only a short distance Page 2
“I had always liked football and I enjoyed the three years that I was with the Cowboys,” said Waggoner-Jones who attends the Potters House with her husband, Mark and their two daughters, Jillian and Uriah. “I chose family practice because you have the opportunity to deal with people of all ages and you deal with a number of different types of illnesses,” said Waggoner-Jones who received her medical training at the University of Oklahoma. “My faith life is a very important part of my medical practice.” Dr. Waggoner-Jones said that often she finds herself praying for her patients, their relatives and the others she works with, assisting her in treating those in need of wellness. “My constant prayer is that God will send me the types of people that I should encounter,” she said. “I often find myself praying for patients.” Married since February 1994, Waggoner-Jones and her husband, Mark, both say that at the foundation of their marriage is a sense of partnership and respect for each other’s strengths and differences. “If you are not working with
your spouse you are working against your spouse,” she said. “My life is interwoven with medicine,” Dr. Waggoner-Jones said. “Being a doctor is just a part of what I am. “I am a mother who wants her The Jones Family and Oprah Winfrey daughters to be honest human beings. I want them to be comfortable with who they are doctor who loves peoples, loves her family and loves the Lord. I could not as people.” “My wife and I work well together,” have been blessed with a better spouse.” Dr. Waggoner-Jones said that everyone said Mark Jones, an entertainment has a mission in life that has been given industry executive. “Our faiths are at the foundation of our marriage and the raising to them by God. “My mission is healing,” she said. “I understand that I am an of our two daughters. “Our family is a praying family that is instrument that God is using to make grateful to God for what we have been people well, to give them a sense of hope blessed with. My wife is an outstanding and to give them a better quality of life.”
away, he decided he might as well have breakfast too, and off he went to munch on some cabbages he had noticed in a nearby cabbage field. But the HARE ate so much and the hot sun made him so sleepy, he said to himself, I will take another quick nap. Now halfway along the course, he decided to have still another nap before flashing past the winning post. When the HARE finally woke up from his naps, he jumped to his feet, but the HARE’s last leap was just too late, for the TORTOISE had beaten him to the finishing line. Sometimes as Christians we want to move when and how we want to move. We make fast starts, trying to run everybody else and burnout half way the race. We take breaks from church, by putting God’s work on hold, no prayers, no bible study, we stop ushering, we stop singing in the choir, we stop paying our tithes when want to, and some of us stay at home when we don’t feel like coming to church. Satan wants to break your stride, destroy your goals, and keep you sidetracked. When God’s people are distracted, they are divided, and when they become divided, they stop moving. The devil knows he cannot stop God, and he cannot change the purpose and the destiny that God has for His church. Some would say that the TORTOISE won because he just kept it slow and easy. In one sense of the word that is true, but what really made the TORTOISE the winner of the race was he kept moving.

The Tragedy in Florida

A Word from the Publisher

Anyone who has a son is by the senseless killing of Trayvon Martin, the young seventeen year old high school student who met his death while holding a can of ice tea and a package of candy in his hands. From the White House to the pulpits of churches all across our country, people are calling for justice in this case. They want to see the shooter, George Zimmerman arrested and they wanted to see him convicted for murder. The President, himself, said that if he had a son he would more than likely look like young Trayvon who by all accounts was mild mannered and headed for a very bright future. Instead, he is headed for the cemetery and his parents and his friends will only have their memories of him to console them. The Justice Department has gotten involved and the Florida States Attorneys General Office has intervened. It will not be long before the case is brought to some kind of resolution, hopefully one that will bring some piece to Trayvon’s parents. The question remains what will we do after all of the media exposure has expired and the young man’s pictures are no longer featured on the daily newscast. My suspicion is that we will do very little. And it will not be long before another young man like Trayvon will be gunned down by a killed filled with hatred and suspicion of people who have non-white skin. ( M"7/(D(( ( One of the things that we must do is to remove guns from the hands of people who are not members of the police services, the military and recreational hunters. What in the world was a man like George Zimmerman doing with an automatic weapon in the first place? He had a history of being mentality imbalanced, he was charged with assaulting a police officer and his girlfriend was afraid of him, according the media reports. Yet, our society says that it is okay that he is armed and that he can shoot without fear of arrest. I will continue to pray for Trayvon, his parents and those who were close to him. And I will continue to fight for a sensible gun possible. Until we have one, all of us are at risk. And all of us are subject to the fate that fell upon young Trayvon Martin, a young man who brief life was needlessly and violently taken away from him. March 30, 2012

inspiring than to count the blessings of prayer. The Bible is full of cases where prayer became an ingredient which served as healing for body, mind and spirit. In the book of Isaiah, chapter 38, we read of the healing and recovery of Hezekiah. The Lord said; “Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die and not live. Then Hezekiah prayed unto the Lord. Then the Lord said unto Hezekiah, I have heard thy prayer and I will add fifteen years to your life.

GREGG’S SPOTLIGHT The Men of Honor The Men of Honor is the moniker given to the Men’s ministry at the House of Prayer Church. This group of men consists of Deacons, prospective deacons, prospective ministers, and lay members. The men of Honor operate under the scripture text Eph. 4:1 “I therefore a prisoner of the Lord beseech you that you to walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called”. We believe that as men God has called us to leadership in the body of Christ. We seek to accomplish this in a variety of ways. The Men of Honor lead a community lunch program in the West Dallas community. Every 2nd Sunday of the month we give away free lunches to all that come desiring to be fed. It is our prayer to be able to extend this lunch program to Saturdays and even additional days as the Lord blesses us to be able to do so. We also sponsor clothing giveaways to community free of charge once a quarter. We are now in the process of establishing a mentor program for young men, first in our congregation then, prayerfully, community wide. In addition God has gifted some of the Men of Honor to be Worship leaders, therefore they are appointed by the Pastor the lead Sunday Morning Worship service, some as musicians and/ or singers, some as speakers and some in other capacities. The Men of Honor also endeavor to be witnesses of Christ thru the ministry of music and we have therefore established a men’s choir that operates under the same name. To be a member of the Men of Honor you must be a confessed born again believer, a member in good standing of the House of Prayer Church, and a faithful supporter of the House of Prayer and the different ministries of the church Thanks for support knon 89.3 fm radio station for we are thuly the voice of the people voted number one radio station in DFW by D-MAGZINE and the Dallas Observer 2011 Musically Yours GREGG A.SMITH DJ/SALES/EVENTS 214-828-9500 ex, 233 cell,469-471-4100

"A Man for the People" Domingo Garcia Oprah Winfrey was once quoted as saying “ lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down” and that quality certainly exist in Domingo Garcia, born in Midland Texas but raised in Dallas. He attended Dallas ISD’s Thomas J Rusk Middle School and graduated from Lloyd V Berkner High School in Richardson Texas where one of his classmates and good friends is Everson Walls of the Dallas Cowboy. Working his way through college, Domingo obtain his
office but for also serving the same community that he has known all of his life and his belief that one must give back to the community that has given so much to him. Continuing to provide a message to the community Domingo has continued to provide the Metroplex with political and, legal knowledge and service. Believing in the right of every man to vote Domingo has served as a precinct chair, campaign volunteer and voter registrar.
President Barack Obama with the Garcias
President Bill Clinton with Domingo Garcia
B.A. in Political Science from the University of North Texas and his Doctor of Jurisprudence from Texas Southern University in H o u s t o n , Te x a s b e f o r e winning a scholarship to study at the El Colegio de Mexico in Mexico City where he earned a Masters degree in International Relationship. Returning to Texas Domingo had a desire to serve others through cultural and social issues. His passion for the community goes beyond running for
Domingo is currently the General Counsel for LULAC, the nation’s oldest Latino civil rights organization and the founder of the Phoenix Project, a drug treatment program for youth. He has established the Domingo Garcia scholarship at the University of North Texas; sponsors the AT L A s t u d e n t l a w o r g a n i z a t i o n a t Te x a s Southern University and created an endowment for law students at TSU's Thurgood Marshall School of Law. www.elitenews.com
Domingo’s has close political associations with State Senator Royce West, Dallas County DA Craig Watkins, President Bill Clinton, Jesse Jackson and our current President Barack Obama should give you a good look at his political prowess. It is apparent that Domingo has lived by the saying “wise are the ones who make the most of things that come their way, and spend no time in weeping for the things that got away”. After growing his law practice in the private sector, Domingo looks to further his political aspirations by running for the n e w l y c r e a t e d 3 3rd Congressional District. This new district was created during the recent redistricting cycle because of the 2010 Census. This newly formed district is unique in that it spans two counties, from the West Oak Cliff area of Dallas County to the Tarrant County Stop Six Poly Tech area. One of the first candidates to run for this newly formed Congressional seat will be seated in the 113th United States Congress.
Domingo is uniquely qualified to fill this position in that he has always lived in this same community. He was elected to the Democratic National Committee where he served for eight years. He was chair and sat on the executive committee of the Latino caucus. He led the fight to create a single-member district in Dallas to increase the minority representation. Served on the Dallas City Council and was the very first Latino ever elected as the Dallas Mayor Pro Tem. Domingo Garcia is ever reminded that “Life is not a “brief candle” . it is a splendid torch that he wants to make burn as brightly aas possible before handing it on to future generations.” On May 29, 2012 the primary election will be held. If a runoff is required the Primary Runoff Election will take place on July 31, 2012 and the election for the U.S. House of Representatives will be held on November 6, 2012. On Saturday the State Champion DeSoto Lady Eagles were doing what they do best, WINNING !!! The Lady Eagles either won or scored points in every event they ran at the Eddie Payne -Carter -Shootout. U.S.A Track and Field Hall of Famer Earnest James instructed all his athletes to try to get first, if you
DeSoto Lady Eagles dominate
couldn't get first try your hardest for second, if you couldn't get second try your best for third. The science behind his lesson was that each place accounted for points. And points win track meets. The Lady Eagles have adopted this philosophy and used it to their advantage. The Lady Eagles dominated the field of 10 teams scoring a total of 233 points to second place finisher Mansfield Timberview's 111points. This is nothing new, the Lady E==agles are undefeated since they won the 5 A State Championship last year, and are poised to repeat again this year. The Lady Eagles have 2 strong relay teams and a host of individual standouts, and a very strong field event crew. The Lady Eagles dominated the Carter shoot-out and showed they are one of the top track programs in the country.
On the boy's side I was really impressed with a young sprinter from Carter High School by the name of Bruce Johnson. Johnson won the 100 meter dash and anchored the winning sprint relay. The Carter boys had a good showing and won the meet scoring 93 points. Johnson won the 100 meter dash in an impressive fashion and his performance on the sprint relay let you know it's just a matter of time before this young sprinter makes some noise on the state level. Special to The Elite News Sanford, FL (BlackNews.com) -- African American clergy and civil rights leaders from around the country participated in a rally and march on Monday, March 26, 2012, in Sanford, Florida in an effort to demand justice for slain Miami-Dade teen Trayvon Martin. Led by Pastor Jamal Bryant the rally was held at Centennial Park, 400 Park Ave, Sanford, FL, at 4:00 p.m., where they kicked-off the National Trayvon Martin March for Justice. Organizers and supporters headed to Sanford City Hall, 300 North Park Ave, Sanford FL, to attend a City Council Meeting which was held at 5:00 p.m. Immediately following the meeting Sybrina Fulton, mother of Trayvon Martin spoke. The National Trayvon Martin March for Justice has garnered support from some of the nation's most influential people and organizations in the African American community. Confirmed participants included Reverend Jesse Jackson, representatives from the NAACP, Michael Baisden, representatives from the Central Florida Urban League, members of the AME Ministerial Alliance, Students from Howard University, Bethune Cookman University, Florida A&M University, Morehouse College, Spelman College, University of Central Florida, the African American Student Union, National PanHallenic Council, and concerned citizens. a call for a new generation of civil right's activist to let the nation know we will not stand for injustice against African Americans or any other minority," says Bryant, who is organizing the march. "This is often called the Hip Hop Generation; well now it's time for Hip Hop's voice to be heard." Protesters were asked to bring their voices and a bag of Skittles in honor of Trayvon. Pastor Jamal Bryant is the founder of the Empowerment Temple Church in Baltimore, MD. Under his leadership the church has grown from 43 members to over 12,000 in a few short years making it the fastest growing church in the history of the AME church. With a strong presence in the community members of the congregation were responsible for registering more voters than any church in the state of Maryland.

Clinical Research Studies using Investigational Inhaled Insulin now seeking Patients with Diabetes in Dallas, TX Area Residents with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes sought to participate in research into condition that affects over 26 Million Americans Dallas, TX– Two clinical research studies evaluating AFREZZA® (insulin human [rDNA origin]) Inhalation Powder, an investigational, inhaled mealtime insulin, in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, are now underway at sites throughout the United States, including Baylor Endocrine Center in Dallas. An estimated 26.8 million people in the United States have diabetes, a condition that affects 246 million people worldwide and is expected to affect 380 million by the year 2025. The purpose of the research study in subjects with type 1 diabetes, called the Affinity 1 Trial, is to compare AFREZZA administered at mealtime in combination with basal insulin to
insulin aspart, a mealtime insulin therapy, in combination with basal insulin. The goal of the research study in subjects with type 2 diabetes, called the Affinity 2 Trial, is to determine that AFREZZA is superior to placebo in reducing HbA1c levels in patients with type 2 diabetes whose HbA1c levels are currently inadequately controlled with metformin or two or more oral diabetes therapies. “Diabetes is a serious medical concern and a growing epidemic in the world, and despite the availability of numerous effective treatments, there remains a need for additional treatment options,” said Priscilla Hollander, Ph.D., M.D., board certified
endocrinologist and lead trial investigator. “These research studies of an investigational inhaled insulin may provide an option for patients with diabetes.” Baylor Endocrine Center, one of the sites participating in the trial, is seeking patients, 18 years of age or older, who: · Have been diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes for more than one year · Are nonsmokers or have ceased smoking for more than six months · Have HbA1c levels between 7.5% and 10.0% · If they are type 1, have been taking maintenance/mealtime insulin therapy for at least three months with a
fasting plasma glucose (FPG) of less than 220 mg/dL, or · If they are type 2, have taken only metformin or two or more oral diabetes medications for at least three months Patients who are interested in enrolling or learning more about either of the two studies may call 877-232-9178 or visit www.YourDiabetesStudy.com.
