Sherilyn Jones is on a mission to inspire others while allowing God to work through her. Being a creative person at heart, she always has an idea. From the Oak Cliff area of Dallas Texas, Sherilyn says, “The world is so crazy and it’s not a lot of positive influence where I’m from. I think my motivation and creative talent comes from me wanting to give the world something inspiring to look forward to. I just want people to live out their dreams and enjoy life.” Drawing since she was a child shaped her into the creative prodigy she is today. “You can ask anyone that knows me, I’m always drawing, designing, writing a story, lyric, or thinking of a new venture.” she says. “I never gave up on my dreams and today I am a product of faith.” Faith is what she has as she is now the founder of The Concept Media Group, LLC. Graduating from The Art Institute of Dallas, Sherilyn landed a few jobs in the Graphic Design industry. After being laid off from a company designing sales catalogs for a wholesale company in Addison Texas in 2007, Sherilyn then became persistent with her company brand and began elevating her services within the local entertainment scene as a Marketing and Design guru for

Can’t Keep Up With The Joneses chronicles the life of a group of siblings in a world of trends and hilarious everyday situations. Recently, the United States Supreme Court held oral arguments concerning the Constitutionality of the Healthcare Act that the Congress passed and President Barack Obama signed. The act, considered one of the most progressive pieces of legislation signed into law by any President in the history of the United States, is very important to people without the ability to pay their own healthcare costs, people with preexisting conditions, and to students who are unable to pay their own healthcare premiums. There are some who oppose President’s Obama‘s healthcare legislation. They derisively call it Obama Care. They are critical of it even though Mitt Romney, who appears to be the Republican Party’s presidential candidate in the fall, signed similar legislation into law while he was Governor of Massachusetts. It is important to understand the historical achievement that President Obama was able to accomplish when the healthcare bill being challenged was signed into law. Every President since Richard M. Nixon ( ( has either talked about, orM"7/(D(( sought some type of healthcare for all Americans. Barack Obama is the only one who has ever produced. Now the fate of his singular achievement is in the hands of nine men and women who wear black robes and who are the final decision makers as to the whether or not a piece of legislation violate the nation’s Constitution. From the tone of the oral arguments, four of the judges are in favor of the law and four are against it. It appears that the fate of healthcare for all Americans is in the hands of a single judge. The court is scheduled to make its decision sometime before the November election. I am hopeful that this single justice will vote to uphold the nation’s healthcare law. Upholding the law is crucial to the direction of healthcare in this nation. America, before the passage of the Obama bill, had the largest number of uninsured citizens of any nation in the free world. We cannot afford to turn the clock back refusing to acknowledge the fairness and brilliance of the legislation that President Obama and many others fought so desperately to achieve. America is a great nation because of what it does for all of it citizens. All of our people should have the comfort of knowing that that when they go to a hospital they will not be turned away. Quality healthcare should not only be for the rich among us. It should be for all of our people. That is among the principal reasons that the healthcare law should stand. April 6, 2012

All across the state of Texas and throughout the United States, the country is dotted with institutions of higher learning that were started by pastors and the men and women who supported them financially and with a sense of community. Imagine where we would be as a nation if those institutions had not stepped forward and filled the void that existed. Some of them have built critically needed housing for senior citizens. SPIRITUAL FOOD Ask Dr. Hollie Dear Dr. Hollie, I met this guy that I really like. We have been talking on the phone a lot in the last few weeks; and we’ve gone out twice. He is the nicest person I’ve met in a long time. I am normally attracted to a more “thuggish” type of man. Not any that I would ever consider a nice guy. So this is different for me; and it’s refreshing. I am really enjoying the time we spend on the phone. However, I don’t really enjoy the face time. He’s really sweet, but he has a bit of a hygiene problem. It’s not really anything that can’t be fixed, but I wouldn’t know where to begin talking it over with him. Or even if it is my place to do so. I’ve hinted by talking a lot to him about cologne; and when we are together, I put on an extraordinary amount of perfume just in hopes of bringing up the subject. It hasn’t worked so far; and I don’t find myself rushing to get back to seeing him face to face. What do I do? At this point, I’m just thinking I’d rather leave him alone than have this talk. In relationships, many times there will be difficult subjects you will have to address, and you may as well start now. You said it is easy to fix, so do just that, fix it! Did you not know that God is the great magnet of the universe, full of spiritual power. Because of the drawing power of His deep affection for man, we find ourselves responding to His magnetic power, since we are creatures made in His likeness. Therefore, we are drawn to God in prayer. Prayer became companionship between God and man. This is to say that God is pouring out His heart to man and man is pouring out his heart to God. Prayer began when God spoke the first word. He said, “Let us make man.” And after He had breathed into man the breath of life and he became a living soul, man said “Abba, Father!” This is when the conversation and the companionship began. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first."

What a wonderful day this Sunday is, as all over the world people are celebrating the resurrection of Jesus as the Son of God, King of Kings and Lord of Lords, alive forevermore! But we do that every’ Sunday, do not we, as we gather together with fellow Christians around the Lord’s Table? Every time we take the bread and drink the cup, we not only proclaim that we believe that Jesus died for us, but also that He is coming again. So we serve a risen Savior, and we look forward to that day when we shall stand with Him in a glorious heavenly home which He has prepared for all who have loved and served Him.

We treasure the words of the Apostle Paul who wrote in 2nd Timothy 4:7-8, "I have fought the

But the wonderful thing is that I’m ready, because Jesus is my Savior and my Lord. In preparing this message, as I remembered some of the people and events of the past, for some reason my thoughts went back to when my granddaughter was

how.’ So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard." I do not know if you see the humor in that, but I think God must have. Cannot you just see all the hosts of heaven looking down, watching the priests and Pharisees issuing orders, and those soldiers grunting and straining to roll the stone into place, putting the seal of the Roman Empire on it, and then standing guard to make sure that nothing happened? Can you imagine the God who took the sun and flung it into space being thwarted by a mere stone in front of a tomb? Can you imagine the God who created the power of the atom being stopped by a few Roman soldiers armed with swords and spears? Matthew 28:2-4 says, "There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. “His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men." What a scene! God spoke the word, and instantly an angel descends, the earth is shaken, the stone is rolled away, and the soldiers are paralyzed with fear. The stone was only rolled away so that those coming could see in not for Jesus to get out. He was no longer in there anyway. GERALDINE DAVIS When we are HOOKER very young, we sometimes find it difficult waiting to grow up. Once we enter our teen years we find it a struggle to wait until we are old enough to drive. Then, more often than not, we find ourselves waiting as we count down the days till we graduate from high school, or college. When we are sick, or injured, or s u ff e r f r o m s o m e f o r m o f infirmity, we painfully wait for the doctor’s report or lab results. Life seems to be more about waiting than it is anything else at times, and none of us enjoys

waiting very much. But why is it that most of us find it such a difficult struggle to have to wait on things in our lives? Perhaps it is because we have not learned to have patience in “waiting on the Lord.” What does that mean exactly? To answer that question, we must first answer it with another question. Are we “waiting on the Lord,” or are we “waiting in the Lord?” There is a big difference in “waiting on the Lord,” and “waiting in the Lord.” If we just “wait on the Lord,” time does not move any faster, our days are not any shorter, and our anticipation is not diminished, and our waiting remains relentless. And if we simply “wait on the Lord,” we find ourselves restless, anxious, and in a tumultuous whirlwind of anticipation However, if we “wait in the Lord,” we are surrounded by His promises, and His love. and rejoice in the many blessings He has already bestowed upon us, and we know, and believe that our waiting will only make us stronger. When we “wait in the Lord,” we have all of the resources that He has so generously supplied us with. We have strength, knowing that our strength has its source in Him, and that He is a mighty and strong God. We have “Wings as Eagles,” knowing He gives us the assurance that we can soar high above whatever outcome awaits us, and we can rest in our flight, because we have the assurance that He is the wind beneath our wings. We know that we can run like a long distance runner in a marathon, never tiring, leaping and clearing all the hurdles, because He keeps our legs strong, and He keeps us on the track, heading in the right direction and we have

confidence because He keeps us solidly placed in the lead above all else. And we know that in our times of waiting and uneasiness, we can walk in rest and in peacefulness, and not grow weak nor weary, because our Lord, our precious Savior, walks right beside us all the way, clearing our pathway so that we don’t stumble or fall, and when we reach the end of our journey, He reaches out to us with His mighty love, embraces us, and declares that “We have made it all the way, and that our wait is finally over.” Friends, don’t simply “wait on the Lord,” but “wait in the Lord” and have the assurance of patience and peace in God, and journey through life with all the comfort and confidence He gives to you each and every day, and through it all, He will give you rest. For Lancaster Urban Village: A $30 Million Mixed-Use, Mixed-Income, Transit-Oriented Development DALLAS, TX – -City Wide Community Development Corporation (City Wide CDC) hosted groundbreaking ceremonies for Lancaster Urban Village, a $30 million mixed-use, mixed income, transit-oriented retail and residential development across from the Veterans Administration Medical Center in southeast Oak Cliff. City Wide CDC, in association with Catalyst Urban Development, will develop the 3.5 acre site to include 193 residential units, offering a combination of one, two and three-bedroom apartments in three-story, LEED certified buildings that will have 14,000 square feet of local retail and offices on the ground level. A part of Lancaster Urban Village is a 50,000 square foot expansion of the Urban League of Greater Dallas & North Texas where trade skills and work force development classes will be offered. “Revitalizing the Lancaster Corridor and the Lancaster Kiest Shopping Center with transit-oriented development is one of the key goals of our Grow South initiative,” said Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, “and this mixed use project is the first step in a longterm redevelopment plan that’s already underway. Lancaster Urban Village involves a public-private partnership and we are pleased that Greystone Funding Corporation and U.S. Bank have committed to making this private investment in south Dallas. I hope other funders will follow their lead.” “Paris Rutherford (Catalyst Urban Development) and I are excited to see five years of work come to fruition,” explained Sherman Roberts, president of City Wide CDC. “As we both began exploring opportunities in this area, it just made sense for us to work together. The various types of financing available to a not-for-profit developer and a for-profit developer, mixed together made this development possible.” Lancaster Urban Village will meet the housing, medical office space, local retail, restaurant and services needed by the 5000 employees of the VA Medical Center. The new development will offer a pedestrian-friendly, safe and sustainable environment just steps away from this major employment center. Residents and retailers can live, work, shop, play and continue their education just minutes from their home or office. Designed around a resort-styled pool and landscaped courtyard, residents will also enjoy a resident club with a community kitchen and entertainment programming, a business center, hot tub, outdoor lounge, picnic/grill area and fitness center. A central parking garage with 395 spaces will serve retail and residential uses as well as overflow parking for the Urban League headquarters next door. Designed by Beeler, Guest, Owens, Architects, Inc., the 18-month build-out will be managed by NE Construction. $5 million available for qualified students to help pay for college Round Rock, TX —Beginning April 17, qualified students may begin applying for TG’s Charley Wootan Grant Program, which provides one-year grants of up to $4,000. TG will award nearly $5 million in need-based grants to eligible students attending or planning to attend 2-year technical or community colleges, 4year colleges and universities, or those enrolled in teacher certification programs. TG’s Board of Directors allocated $4 million to be awarded to students from Texas, and the remaining $1 million to students residing in other states. TG will award the grants on a firstcome, first-served basis. The funds must be used to pay for postsecondary education. “TG is pleased to provide this funding to help lessen some of the college cost burden, and ultimately help students succeed with their college and career goals,” said TG President and CEO Sue McMillin. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to qualify. Questions about the program can be directed to the TG Charley Wootan Grant Program manager by email at Wootan@Scholarshipamerica.org, or by phone at (800) 537-4180. Since 2000, TG has distributed more than $21 million through the program, named in honor of the late Dr. Charley V. Wootan, a former chairman of TG’s Board of Directors. “In order to qualify, students need to fill out the one-page application, provide proof for the institution they are attending, and show a financial need,” explained McMillin. “We encourage students to submit the application as soon as it is available, as last year’s grants were awarded very quickly. The Charley Wootan Grant Program is independently managed by Scholarship Management Services, a program of Scholarship America, the nation’s largest nonprofit, private-sector scholarship and educational support organization.

Secrets can sometimes be hard to keep. Patricia Killingsworth knows the certainty of that. She has kept a certain secret for decades, one that she hopes will make her chicken and rice based sausage links as common as a cup of coffee. Killingsworth, a Mississippi native, learned how to cook at the knees of her mother, Rose Mary. “Cooking was something that I have loved to do since I was a little girl,” said Killingworth, who has lived in Dallas for the past 11 years. “I only knew a few people when I came here and managed to find employment with a home medical equipment company,” she said. “I worked with customers in various parts of the city and driving around gave me a sense of Dallas.” In 2007, Killingsworth started her company, PK’s Main Menu, with the help of a few friends, her skills at cooking and the secret recipe that she developed after watching her mother and grandmother labor in the kitchen. “I wanted to create healthy products for people, that

they liked and that they would enjoy eating,” she said, adding that she started catering small parties, weddings, birthday parties and later turned to manufacturing her very own chicken-based smoked sausage. “One of my brothers, Johnnie, does our cakes and other deserts,” she said. “I also have a special assistant who helps me run the business.” Still holding down a fulltime day job, Killingsworth runs her business at night and on weekends. On most

Saturdays she can be found at the Dallas Farmer ’s Market where she sells her chicken and rice based smoke sausage links which are manufactured near Dallas. “We are in a few retail outlets and I am looking at expanding,” she said. A devoted member of Greater Cornerstone Baptist Church in north Dallas, Killingsworth said her faith plays a role in everything that she has accomplished and in the growth of her business. Her pastor is David E. Wilson.

“Everything that I do is based on my faith and prayer,” she said. “We have done some church events and are looking to expand in the church market. “I have taken advantage of social media and have a web presence.” Added Killingsworth, who can be reached at pksmainmenu@sbcglobal.net,

Veteran storm watchers, meteorologists and other commentators said that the various tornadoes that struck the Dallas area earlier this week could have taken the lives of countless people, and that only a divine intervention kept Dallas from experiencing the calamity of a horrific war zone. “It was as if God himself had placed his arms around us and kept us from danger,” said Pastor Charles Lightner, the senior shepherd at the Holy Comforter Church of God in Christ. “We were spared and we have to be grateful that God saw fit to protect us.” “While the storm was a tragedy, it was a blessing that God placed embraced the DFW Metroplex like HE did,” said Reverend Robert Ashley, during his popular daily radio show on Wednesday, less than twenty-four hours after the storm hit with it ferocity. State Representative Helen Giddings, while being interviewed on Reverend Ashley’s show, said that Dallas area residents, elected officials and others were working together to bring things back to normalcy. “We will have April 6, 2012

to be patient,” she said. “We will have to work together and rebuild.” Rep. Giddings, who represents Desoto in the state legislature, said that she had gotten little sleep since the storm hit, and that she had spent her time checking on area residents and helping to coordinate the relief effort. “This was a deadly storm that could have taken the lives of many people,” said Deputy Mayor Tennell Atkins. The police department, the fire department, city officials and our other emergency responders did a wonderful joy in helping people during this disaster. The electronic media also played an important

role in alerting people about the dangers of the storm,” he said. Deputy Mayor Atkins also praised Oncor for their efforts to restore electrical power to the homes of people who lost service during the storms. “All of us have learned that being prepared for this type of emergency can actually save lives. We were blessed.” he said. Atkins said that a relief effort was being coordinated by numerous community groups and he urged citizens to call his City Hall

When Bill Cosby made that statement he was not trying to make anyone laugh. Mr Crosby was speaking about PASSION!! When a leader reaches out in passion, he is usually met with an answering passion. This past weekend I enjoyed watching some of the top basketball players in the area, and the state. I was out in Lewisville watching the Great American Shoot-Out. I'm really growing to enjoy the way the sport of basketball is structured. High school basketball ended in March. College basketball ends in March. The National Basketball League ends it's season in June. But for high school basketball players moving from their junior season into their senior season this is the end of AAU basketball for them. Yea, thats right no one should be playing AAU after their 11th grade season. There are some that do but that's another story. Last AAU season I had the pleasure of watching players like State Champion M Smart play, I watched L Nash play and now he is playing at OSU, and next season with M Smart at OSU. I have enjoyed seeing theses young men display the passion that have made them the top players of their class.

Dallas Fort- Worth meet my talents of the week, The Dallas Trojans-Class of 2013. This team is made up of some very talented players from all over the metroplex. Theses young players made a name for themselves at one of the nations biggest tournament. I watched as these players won game after game showing the true passion that winners possess. The guard played by Braylon Rayson, Jalen Etienne, and Reggie Myrks was super to watch. Their speed with the basketball left players reaching too slow and too late and opened up the lane for exceptional play by the big men on the inside. Anthony Walker is a high jumping, slam dunking power forward that showed no one could match up with him. Then there's big Dave Lankford the is an immovable force in the middle. And to complete the triangle of dominant big men the Trojan have Dustin Thomas who showed that he is one of the top big men in the country. Point guard Braylon Rayson continued to make spectacular pass after spectacular pass to the perfect player at the perfect time.

assistant coach Joe Avezzano has died. Cowboys spokesman Rich Dalrymple confirmed Thursday that Avezzano died in Italy. He was 68. Avezzano coached the Cowboys' special teams during the team's heyday in the 1990s, which included three Super Bowl championships. He was named special teams coach of the year three times.
