By Joseph Green-Bishop Elite News Staff Writer

Dallas County District Attorney Craig watkins, one of the most effective and respected law enforcement officials in the country, has suggested that an honest and frank discussion on the topic of race take place in America. He said that Dallas could be a good place to start the effort. the suggestion came from watkins after three African American men were exonerated in an aggravated robbery case. After the decision, watkins said that too many people of color are being wrongfully charged and convicted in the nation’s courts because of the color of their skin, and not because they are law violators. watkins’ thoughts about a conversation around the topic of race were echoed by state district court Judge lena levario who presided over the case in which the three wrongly convicted men were

release. “the time for subtly has come and gone.” Said Judge levario. Since 2001, 30 men and women of color have been exonerated in cases that have been brought against them in Dallas County, according to law enforcement officials. Most of the cases moved forward in the courts based on faulty eyewitness testimony and illegal actions by prosecutors. Some were death penalty cases. During his tenure as Dallas County Prosecutor, watkins has appeared on national television speaking about the plight of wrongfully convicted individuals. He has worked closely with the in-

Many of these men served decades in prison before being found innocent. the last time that serious questions about a discussion on race in American were raised was when President Bill Clinton was in office. the President appointed a commission headed by the late historian John Hope Franklin. it held hearings and made some headway but was derailed largely because of the President’s problems with the media. “i believe that all of us would benefit from a discussion about the role that race plays in our society,” said C.t. toney, an area business owner. “there is no doubt in my mind that it affects much of what takes place in our society. i back District Attorney watkins in his appeal.”

FOUNDING THOUGHTS

Where are the Black American Baseball Players?

A very important part of my life was spent as a pitcher in the negro Baseball leagues. i learned some very value lessons about life. i learned the importance of character, competition and team participation. i had the opportunity to travel to different cities, experience various cultures and learn how different people lived their lives. the beginning of baseball season was always one of the most exciting times of my life. i am still excited when i see young men suit us to play “America’s pastime.” Yet, i am very sad to see that so few African Americans are playing major league baseball. it is a sport that men such as Jackie Robinson, willie Mays, Frank Robinson, willie Stargell and so many others of colors made a significant part of American culture. those who run the sport of baseball must make an extra effort to get young men from our inner cities involved in baseball. they must support summer leagues and find talent at very young ages. the talent is there. it must be developed and encouraged. while once it was illegal for players of colors to compete with their white counterparts those of us who played the game knew that what we were doing was just as important as any game played by the new York Yankees or the Boston Red Sox. Every time i look at the roosters of our current major league teams i think of how disappointed Black ball players such as Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson and Buck Owens would be. they played their hearts out each day. they played so that they could be recognized, and so that younger men of color would someday get an opportunity to showcase their skills and share in the financial rewards that baseball offers it players. no doubt, our prisons are filled with young men who have tremendous baseball skills. imagine if these young people were given an opportunity to play baseball rather than make license plates in our penal institutions. i like baseball. i am a member of the board of directors of the negro league Baseball league Hall of Fame. i like going to the ballpark to see our local team. i would feel better though if i were able to go to the game and see a team that reflects the complexion of our society as it is today.

We Are Family!

WORD FROM THE PUBLISHER Debra Blair Abron

the recent storms that ravaged our community, collapsing homes and damaging businesses did not take any lives. And for that we should be very grateful. During the past week i have listened to our many friends in the faith community who have unanimously declared that only the hand of God prevented anyone from losing their lives. God knew about the storm before it came, and God knew about it when it was over. it was the spirit of God that allowed countless numbers of volunteers to rush to the aide of our fellow citizens whose homes were badly damaged or destroyed. Members of the clergy, such as Reverend Dedrick Jennings, went into their own pockets to purchase personal care items and food for residents who were in need. Politicians such as State Representative Helen Giddings, Deputy Mayor tennell Atkins, former Mayor Dwaine Caraway and State Representative Yvonne Davis, among others, did not sleep during the twenty-four hour period as they rushed from one area to another to assist residents. their actions were in the spirit of the aged old saying, “we are Family.” Dallas is blessed with an abundance of people

C H U R C H

who quickly rush to be with neighbors or strangers who are in need of assistance. Our faith community has a reputation for being there for people whose lives have crumbled around them. imagine that your family was one of those which lost nearly everything during the recent storm. imagine the personal devastation you must have felt when the wind and rain came. Yet, imagine knowing that there were those who would come to your aide. All too often we think in this society that we are all alone, especially during time of difficulty. But the actions of citizens, businesses, members of the clergy and elected officials during tuesday’s storms demonstrate that we are not all alone, that people do care and that the hand of God is still present in our lives. Yes, there were people who lost everything. Yet, we must never forget that after every storm in our lives we have the opportunity to rebuild, to reach out and touch the lives of others. The Elite News would like to extend its condolences to all of those who were harmed by the storm. You are a part of our family and we care about you. we would also like to extend a heartfelt gratitude to those who went out into the streets immediately after the storm to assist their neighbors, strangers who they did not know. it all proves that we are indeed family.

Dear Dr. Hollie,

My mother has not spoken one word to me in the last six months. Six months ago, i eloped in las Vegas with my then fiancé of two years. it was just something that we really wanted to do. we thought it would be fun and exciting because neither of us had ever been to las Vegas. Also, we were able to turn it into a honeymoon for two weeks, adding California cities to our travel. we had a blast. i had already told my Mom that that’s what we wanted to do. She really objected saying that as her only daughter, she really wanted to have a big wedding for me. She didn’t like the idea of our having this type of wedding, and said she would never speak to me again. But i thought she was just being a little dramatic and that she’d get over it. At first, i was being stubborn and tried not to care. that only lasted about a month. She is not returning my phone calls, texts, or emails. i went to her house once and she wouldn’t answer the door. i swear she had my Dad too afraid to open it as well. like i said, it’s been six months. How do i get this to end? My Mom Won’t Come Around

Dear My Mom, Keep trying to get an audience with your mom whether in person or by phone, email or text. Mention, to her that while you truly respect her desire for you to have a big wedding that you went with what you desired for yourself. It is obvious that your choice was not pleasing and it was not your intent. However, as we take on a spouse our focus changes from parental preferences to decisions based on what the two of you prefer.

Prayer Closet

Let’ talk about prayer and its purpose. Sometimes you may wonder, why we pray and what can we accomplish and what can we accomplish by praying. We know that more things are wrought by prayer than this world, dreams of. Prayer is the responsibility of every Christian. We are to obey God’s word as He has told us that “man ought to always pray and not faint”. Actually, the purpose of prayer is to determine God’s will in a matter, and then pray it into existence. Prayer is a priority. It was that in Jesus life. He placed it over physical rest, social life and food. Prayer was the primary communication link between Jesus and His Father; the same is true for us. Luke 6:12 “And it was at this time that He went off to the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God”. April 13, 2012

Build A Treasure

Malachi 3:16-17 16”then those who feared the lord talked with each other, and the lord listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the lord and honored his name.17"they will be mine," says the lord Almighty, "in the day when i make up my treasured possession. i will spare them, just as in compassion a man spares his son who serves him.” By Henry Nelson Elite News

Have you ever wondered what the lord thinks, when His children get together to speak about him? well it is very special to Him! in fact the word of God says the words become His special treasure. Have you ever seen this scripture? Malachi 3:16-17 says, “then they that feared the lord spake often one to another: and the lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the lord, and that thought upon his name. 17 And they shall be mine, saith the lord of hosts, in that day when i make up my jewels.” Amen! the lord thinks so much of your speaking with one another and sharing about His ways, that he has a special book where

T H E

C H U R C H

all our conversations are recorded. Your conversations with your brothers and sisters are considered special jewels. the lord loves to hear His children speaking about Him! And His wonderful acts of love. that’s why the enemy is always trying to separate believers, because there is a key in unity. if he can keep us apart he won’t have to think about all the treasures our words are building. Unity always brings fellowship, and in fellowship we have communication, and in communication we create special treasure, most precious to the lord. the fact is, we will never always agree on how some things should be done, but in order to create special treasure we must choose to put aside our different ways of doing things and focus on the one key element. to speak ~to share ~ to Shout ~ and to worship Him! For in so doing we create treasure. we cannot get into this deep sharing of the heart with one another unless we allow unity to have its way with us. Unity is a choice and we know that according to Psalm 133 it causes God to command a blessing. i found this wonderful message from one of the Desert Fathers written around 400AD. there were two old men who had dwelt together for many years, who never quarreled. And that one said to the other let us

A N D

C O M M U N I T Y

pick a quarrel with one another, even as other men do. "Ï know not how to quarrel said the younger" to which the older replied, "set then this brick in the middle and say this is mine. to which i will say, no it is mine, from whence quarreling will begin." So they placed the brick in the midst, and one said "this is mine", to which the other said, "if this be so, then take it and go thy way in peace". So they were unable to quarrel, Sayings of the Desert fathers we may not always agree with our brother but we can make a choice for unity. when we see unity we will see the Glory of God manifest. the bible says, "the whole earth shall be covered with the knowledge of the glory of God" Man has the capacity for great things through unity, He also has the capacity for evil, remember the tower of Babel? the body of Christ is made up of many ethnic groups. Many cultures many different socieconomic groups, but if we want to see the Glory of God you must walk in our diversity and accept our differences and be in unity! On a Motorway near my home wildflowers have been sown on the verges and median strips. there is an amazing beauty in the wildflowers. On their own, they seem like weeds but together they paint a symphony of

color, their unity brings a carpet of glory that one wildflower on its own cannot achieve. the thing about wild flowers is that they just pop up and seem very random in their individual appearance. in these last days of Harvest and glory we will see many new brothers and sisters just pop up! they will be different to you but they are of you. As you are of Him! we can choose to see our brothers and sisters as Dads kids or we can walk in disunity and grumble all day long and wonder why we never see an anointing or the Glory in the house. God’s real treasures are not to be found in a bank or in a safety deposit box or in bricks and mortar. His real treasure is beside you, your brother or your sister. we are walking treasures Jewels set apart for Him. If you would like the entire message please contact me at:revelations_75044@msn.com

Medicare can be a welcome gift, especially if you take time to understand the different parts of the program and the wealth of health care resources it may provide you. it’s important that you know, if you don’t sign up for Medicare when you’re 65, you will pay a penalty for signing up at a later time. what is Medicare? to begin with, Medicare is broken into four parts of health insurance coverage. Five Shot, Three Dead in Tulsa Shootings C E L E B R A T I N G

By Lorie Blair Elite News Staff

Friday, April 6 in a predominately black northern tulsa Oklahoma community four black men and one woman are shot. Of those shot three have died. those killed were Dannaer Fields, 49; Bobby Clark, 54 and william Allemn, 31. First accounts these shooting all appeared to be random isolated incidents. with a community on edge Operation Random Shooter, a task force which included tulsa police, County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Marshal and the FBi quickly identified the shooters. By Sunday nineteen year old Jacob England

and thirty two year old Alvin watts have been arrested and expected to be charged with three counts of first-degree murder, two counts of shooting with the intent to kill and a single count of possession of a firearm while committing a felony. As the police continue their investigation England’s Facebook page seemed to indicate that England targeted blacks out of revenge for his father’s death. On England’s Facebook page he indicated that out of revenge he targeted blacks. "i'm gone in the head. today is two years that my dad has been gone," England wrote on the page adding a racial slur to refer to Demond. Also found on his page England posted “i do believe it just

mite be the time to call it quits. … i’m done. if something does happen tonite, be ready for another funeral. “ watts frequently posted on England’s page referring to England as “my bro” and sending him messages in support after his father’s death and as reported by the Associated Press the two were roommates, sharing a house in turley Oklahoma. two years ago Carl England, 47, was shot by Pernell Demond Jefferson during a fight just a quarter mile east of where william Allen was shot. Jefferson, a black man and a convicted felon was later convicted of pointing a firearm and is serving a prison sentence through

October 2014. when arrested both were unarmed and did not resist arrest. it is reported that the gun may have been found in the charred white pick-up truck used in the shootings and owned by England. Susan Sevenstar, a family friend of England’s told the Associated Press that England was a good kid who was not in his right mind after his father’s death and suicide of his fiancée last January. together they have one child. Sevenstar has described England as a Cherokee indian who did not care about color. watts brother denies that he is a racist indicating his family is made up of different races. Under Oklahoma’s lax hate

crime laws fist convictions only carry up to a year in jail. One of the families of those who died would rather see the prosecutors focus on seeking the death penalty opposed to adding hate crime to the charges. when asked Deatrah Fields, niece of Dannaer Fields stated "i think they should go for murder. As many people's lives they involved by what they did in this thing, they should go for murder. they can go ahead and seek the death penalty, too." England and watts will be arraigned Monday April 16 at 9 a.m. they both are held in the tulsa jail with their bail set at $9.2 Million each.

thomas Pak’s life has been engulfed in unbelievable turmoil for the past year. there are nights when he is unable to sleep. there are days when he is afraid for his safety, the safety of his employees and even the safety of his family. Pak, the owner of a small business on Martin luther King Blvd. in South Dallas would like all of the turmoil to stop. He would like to befriend those who say that he has offended them, and he would like to get on with his life as a merchant who makes a living treating his customers fairly and giving them high quality service. “there are many opportunities in America,” said Pak whose family attends a Korean Church in Carrollton. “in the past some things have gone wrong, but i would like to look toward the future. i would like to be a business owner who contributes to the life of the community that allows my business to prosper and grow, and i would like to be a blessing to the community and its

it's not hard to imagine a young teenager waking up on Saturday morning planning their day. i would think that most kids would wake up and get their phones, computers, i -pads, i -pods, or whatever And start making plans to meet at the mall, go to the game, catch a movie ,or just hang out. it's not hard for me to imagine that, because that's what i sometimes think young people are preoccupied with! we as adults understand that most kids are consumed with what they want to do in life. we as parents tell our kids to slow down and do things that have meaning! we get concerned about the amount of time our kids spend talking on the phone, watching videos on Youtube, or how much time they spend on Facebook and twitter !! i think we as parents are concerned because there are so many meaningless things that distract our kids. well a group of kids from Cedar Hill Collegiate Highhool proved me wrong! this past Friday was Good Friday and schools were out for the Easter holiday. i woke up, started my morning and ran my morning errands. when i got back home around mid day i

observed my son on his Facebook page. now that's not anything new or strange, but the comment that followed did surprise me a little. My son asked if he could go with some of his classmates to volunteer to help with the clean up in lancaster! it turns out that one of his classmates had sent out an invitation to her classmates at Cedar Hill Collegiate high school to join her with the clean up in lancaster. As i thought about it, i was impressed that theses young people were using this social media for something good. i have always been impressed with those types of high schools that specialize in certain things. For example: Booker t washington for the performing Arts, or townview Magnet, or Business, Art, and Health magnet. But i really like Cedar Hill Collegate High school. this school allows their students to take a dual curriculum. these young students actually enroll at Cedar Valley College, take college courses and get a degree all during their junior and senior year of high school. it's not just about academics either. i have been to the Collegiate High

schools Got talent Program which was there annual talent showcase and i was impressed with the extremely talented students. the talents ranged from singing to poetry to guitar playing and of course the step show. i also went to the Collegiate High school just before the Christmas holiday break to see the song "Joyful, Joy-Mark A Toliver iii, Naairah Lott, Alexandria Brown, Jessica Wilson and Shaniqua Bhavik ful "performed by these young students could have a group of students, i also attended without complaining these young people loaded shovels, rakes, wheel been anywhere on that Saturday the schools annual picnic, and even checked out a Collegiate High barrels, water, boxes, trash bags and evening, but on this day theses students were not preoccupied with school flag football competition . a lots of other things onto trucks. After they loaded the supplies what they wanted to do or where needless to say these young people these young people went into the they had to be. On Saturday these are busy! now you would think that these neighborhoods and picked up all young people were not texting or students would be focused on keep- types of trash including bricks, twitting, they were making a legitiing up with the many academic as- wood, and glass. they also took mate effort to help. Facebook, has signments that the teaches assign to advantage of there time in this changed the way we communicate, them daily in order for them to neighborhood and walked around we can use it for some strange keep up and maintain there grades asking people how could they help. things but this was one of those however on Saturday a group of they smiled and laughed the entire times when Facebook was used to get the word out about doing someyoung kids put all of this aside in time they were working. i have always been impressed thing good for a community that order to assist people that really with the students at Cedar Hill Col- needed help, and that help came needed their help! this group of young people met legiate High school, but on Satur- from young people in a major in lancaster, got their volunteer day i was really impressed with way!! badges and went into the neighbor- these young students willingness to Thank You Cedar Hill Collegiate hood that had been destroyed by the give of their time to help in the High School!
