FOUNDING THOUGHTS

While a student at Texas A & M University, Larry Taylor excelled at athletes. A member of the track team, he excelled in the events that he competed in. Yet Larry knew that he main mission in university was to study and that track and field was secondary. “While I was a student I tried to prepare myself for a future life in community service,” law Larry, who began his professional career as a banker before deciding to become a lawyer. “I purpose law because I wanted to help people. I wanted to help those who society sometimes takes advantage of,” said Taylor, a partner in the Johnny Cochran Law firm and a candidate for the Texas House of Representative in District 110. I want to be a public servant who always places the residents of my district first,” said Taylor. “I plan to conduct monthly community forums in churches and recreation centers to let residents know what is going on in Austin. Voters will see me more than just at election time. I intend to become a permanent part of the fabric of the district.” Taylor says that he plans to establish youth academies in the District that will allow young people, beginning at age eight, to be trained in the area of science, technology, engineering and math. “We have to prepare our young people for the future. We cannot sit around and allow the jobs of the future to pass them by. We must act now so that they are prepared to compete.” For four years, Taylor worked as a senior aide to Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, serving as her director of outreach. He also worked as an Assistant District Attorney for Dallas District Attorney Craig Watkins. “I was able to organize efforts to assist citizens in the District with obtaining state and federal resources,” he said. “Additionally, I volunteered to direct youth sports teams. I worked with underserved people in all communities, Black, Hispanic and white,” he said. A graduate of the Thurgood Marshall Law School at Texas Southern University, Larry was a member of the school’s board of regents while a student. He also was appointed to work in the Texas Legislature while at Texas Southern. He has been embraced by members of the clergy, senior citizens, community leaders and regular citizens. “Larry is a tremendous individual,” said Anthony Brown, a life-long District resident. “I am going to vote for him because he will be a great servant of the people. He will get things done and he will work very hard on our behalf.” May 4, 2012

Babies having Babies

wORD FROM THE PUBLISHER Debra Blair Abron
I often speak to friends who teach in our schools and some of them say that one of the problems that confronts the community is the large number of very young girls who are having babies, and who find themselves as parents when they are fourteen, fifteen and sixteen years of age. Now ask yourself, what does a fourteen-year old girl know about raising a son or a daughter? The young mother is having difficulty raising herself. She does not possess the parenting skills or the resources, in most cases, to feed and clothe a child. In many cases, the children of these young parents end up as wards of the state, either in foster homes or in prisons. In fact, if you were to take a serious look at our prison populations, you would find many young men whose parents are not more than 15 years older than they are. Proper parenting requires wisdom. A young girl who is 15 years old has yet to reach a stage where she is able to seriously ponder issues or social policies. She is still, in many ways, a child herself. Yet,

we continue to accept an environment where our babies are having babies. One of the ugly realities of these young girls having babies is that the fathers of the children, in many cases, are older men, who simply taken advantage of young and impressionable girls. The situation is unacceptable and we are a community must do something about it. We must begin to sexually educate our children. We must begin to tell them that sex is not a sport like basketball ball or baseball. We must tell them what the result of sex will be. We must also begin to place pressure on those older men who are fathering children by these younger women. Those who are caught should be charged with rape and sent to prison for the societal damage that they are doing. Some teachers tell me that when they request to see the parents of some of the children who are giving them disciplinary problems, they sometimes believe that they are speaking with an older brother or an older sister. They say that the parent does not understand the severity of the situation and is sometimes hostile. The situation that we currently face is unacceptable and dangerous and we cannot allow it to continue. We cannot allow children to condition to have children. It is not healthy nor is it wise.

The Regional Track and Field Championship lived up to the hype and did not disappoint! Mansfield Timberview sprinter reached legendary status in Waco this past weekend. Aldrich Bailey ran the 400 meter dash in a time of 45.19 and broke the record set by Jeremy Wariner in 2002. Aldrich is the defending 5A state champion in the 400 meter dash and he proved he is the truth! Bailey also runs on the 4 x100 meter relay. Mansfield Timberview ran the event in 40.67. Timberview also ran the 4 x400 meter relay in a time of 3:12.71. This team will be fun to watch in the state meet. I think the student-athletes from our Metroplex proved that this is one of the top track and field states in the nation. Congratulation to all the student-athletes that advanced to the state championship. This is the great state of Texas, and this state is big and there are thousands of track and field athletes and only a hand full get a chance to compete for a state championship! Abraham Hall of South Grand Prairie won the 100 meter dash in a time of 10.45 and also won the 200 meter dash in a very impressive 20.81. Lancaster girls and boys continue to keep up the tradition of winning that comes

The boy’s sprint relay ran the event in a time of 40.95. The lady eagle won the 4x400 meter relay. Ridge Jones and Tramine Acy finished 1st and 2nd in the 100 meter dash. Tia Gamble won the 300 meter hurdles, Shaporria Montgomery (a freshman) placed 2nd in the 400 meter dash. And Will Stovall advanced in the 800 meter run.
