Grace That Makes You Say Wow! Ephesians 2 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God not by works, so that no one can boast.”

W

hat do you think of when you hear the word grace? In the Christian community we are surrounded by the word. A friend of mine’s goes to a school named Grace Bible College, his church is a part of the Grace Gospel Fellowship and we all have sung songs such as Amazing Grace We are constantly surrounded by this word, but do we truly understand the magnitude of grace. Grace is an incredibly critical and important doctrine to our Christian faith. This morning we are going to look at grace. We are going to look at his notion of God’s love coming to us free of charge, no strings attached, absolutely unconditional. In order, to get a good understanding of it we are going to look at some scenes in Jesus’ life. Interestingly enough, Jesus never once used the

word grace. Rather, he taught it and he lived it. In looking at some instances of Jesus displaying this grace it is my hopes that we come to an understanding of God’s grace and then live it! Amen! The first step in understanding God’s grace is realizing it is not something you can earn. This is a foreign idea because you live in a society that is based on earnings and rewards. For example, you work tirelessly for a week or two and then anxiously await your hard earned paycheck. Correct me if I am wrong, but I have never heard of anyone going up to their boss after they receive their paychecks and saying, “thank you, oh thank you for this undeserved gift. How can I possibly thank you enough?” No, this is not how it works. You earned that paycheck. Amen! We are engrained with the idea: the more and harder you work the more you will receive in return. This idea is very present in the business world. For example, this idea is present in the Ford Corporation Ford employees are graded on a scale of 1 to 27. 1 would be given to clerks and secretaries whereas 27 is chairman of the board. You must reach grade 9 to receive an outside parking place. Grade 13 brings with it such perks as a window, plants and an intercom system. Grade 16 offices come equipped with private bathrooms. Military practices this idea as well. Assigned a title, uniform, salary and code of behavior,

every soldier knows exactly where he or she stands in relation to the other. You salute and obey superiors; you give orders to the inferiors. Sports franchises reward those who complete passes, throw strikes, or make baskets, and they have no place for those who fail. We are constantly engrained with this idea that the harder we work the more we receive. This however is the exact opposite of grace and opposite to the way Jesus presented it as he was here on earth. He told the: Parable of workers. Matthew 20:12-15 says, ”These men who were hired last worked only one hour, they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day. But he answered one of them, ‘Friend, I am not being unfair to you. Did not you agree to work for a denarius? Take your pay and go. I want to give the man who was hired last the same as I gave you. Do not I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?” These other workers got what they did not deserve. But that is God’s grace. It is not based on what we can do or what we deserve or earn. He freely gives it to us. Similarly, it is human nature to think that you can gain God’s love or his love is based on what you do and how we respond to him. I know in my life I often judge my relationship with God on the bucket. God’s love for me is not determined on how full my good bucket is compared to my bad bucket.

Rather, God’s love no matter what I do overflows the good bucket. Grace means there is nothing you can do to make God love us more and there is nothing you can do to make God love us less. Grace means that God already loves us as much as an infinite God can possibly love. It is absolutely not determined on what we do, it is not earned. his Saturday, October 1st two of the biggest “Cats” in Black College football will invade Dallas’ Cotton Bowl Stadium; just in time for the opening of the State Fair of Texas, to fight for gridiron glory in the Annual Southwest Airlines’ State Fair Classic. The game features two of the most notable football teams in the Southwestern Athletic Conference; the Grambling State university Tigers and the Prairie View A & M university Panthers. For more than 30 years, this game has showcased the athletic talents of African American athletes from all across the great States of Texas and Louisiana. And this year’s contest will be no different. Former Grambling Tiger Quarterback and Super Bowl XXII MVP Doug Williams, returns to Grambling State for another stint as the Tigers’ head coach. Williams coached the Tigers from 1998 – 2003; winning 3 SWAC titles; having never lost to Prairie View. Grambling comes to this year’s State Fair Classic with a 1-3 record losing to uLM, Alabama State and Alabama A & M. This record puts them at the bottom of the SWAC West division. The Panthers start the season with a new Head Coach in Heishma Northern.

S

Northern was named as the 31st head coach in the school’s history; when Coach Henry Frazier, III, resigned to pursue other interests. Coach Northern will certainly have his work cut out for him, after succeeding Frazier, the second most successful coach in Prairie View’s history. But, not only will he be filling some “big shoes”, left by Coach Frazier, he will also be coaching against his former boss, Doug Williams. A native of Baton Rouge, Northern is a 1996 graduate of Southern university with a degree in mathematics. He began his coaching career at Glen Oaks (La.) High School before moving on to the collegiate level at Morehouse College under former NFL standout Doug Williams. After a stint at Morehouse, Northern moved on to Grambling State with Williams and spent seven seasons there as the team’s defensive coordinator, defensive backs coach, running backs coach and special teams coordinator. Northern has collected a total of five SWAC Championships with one coming as a player in 1993 and four as a coach (2000-2003, 2009). The Prairie View Panthers boasts a 2-2 record, coming into Saturday’s game against Grambling including loosing the season opener against Bethune-Cookman by a score of 63-14. But, the Panthers came roaring back to defeat Texas Southern by a score of

T

he State Fair of TexasŽ has selected 125 Years – A Timeless Tradition as the theme for the upcoming 2011 season (Sept. 30 – Oct. 23). The Fair was established in 1886 and has been the primary tenant of city-owned Fair Park since 1905. This longstanding and mutually beneficial relationship has supported construction, restoration and preservation of facilities in the 277-acre complex for more than a century. When fairgoers arrive at this year’s Fried Food Capital of TexasŽ, there will be more than 70 rides, 200 food locations, livestock shows, cooking competitions and the 2012 State Fair Auto Show. In addition, the Chevrolet Main Stage will feature top entertainers every weekend plus live bands throughout the week. All concerts are free for fairgoers. Eating is one of the great traditions during the Fair’s 24-days and the focus on food begins before the Fair’s host, Big Tex, assumes his official duties. On Labor Day, State Fair concessionaires vie for top honors in the Big Tex Choice Awards. Since its inception in 2005, the contest has captured the attention of food enthusiasts with an ever-growing list of headline grabbing culinary concoctions. Past contest winners include Fried Beer™,

Grace International Seminary

Texas Fried FRITOS PieŽ, Fried CokeŽ, and Chicken Fried Bacon. Football is one of the timeless traditions of the Fair and fans will have their eyes on the Cotton Bowl when Prairie View A&M meets Grambling State in a Southwestern Athletic Conference game on Saturday, Oct. 1. Following – just a week later on Saturday, Oct. 8 – is the annual contest between the university of Texas and the university of Oklahoma. This year’s State Fair Musical is one of the greatest love stories of all time, West Side Story. The new Broadway cast album recently won the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album. Out of the Eyes of a Layman “Who

ho is this fellow? Who is this fellow who changed history in Gene Turner Dallas, Texas. Who is this fellow who made such an impact in this community that one of our larger parks was renamed in his honor. Rochester Park located in Bon – Ton as we know it to be, was renamed “The William Blair, Jr. Park” This was a great honor given to a man that really deserved this recognition. Bill Blair is a special, and one of a kind person, or individual. I knew Bill Blair before he knew me personally. I’ve known Bill Blair since I was a teenager fifteen (15) years old. Of course Mr. Blair had seen me many times, but I was in a crowd of youngsters playing on the North Dallas Park, and the Moreland Branch YMCA in north Dallas. We played basketball on the park in segregated North Dallas, and behind the basketball court was the baseball or softball field where we would play also. I was a pretty good baseball player myself. Mr. Blair was a young man at that time, he was only 27 or 28 years old at the time, because he is only 12 or 13 years older than me, but as a young man he had his head screwed on right. I can recall many times that Mr. Blair, or Woody Culter who was another young man at that time, always had time to stand around, or sit down with us to give instructions to young men coming along in sports, and about life in general. They would talk to us about staying away from drugs, alcohol, etc. They gave pointers on how to do certain things on the field of play, etc. With us, these two men were I-cons, because we believed them, and in them, because what they told us to do they themselves would demonstrate it before our eyes. Mr. Blair has been a great help to young men who have gone on to professional baseball, and other professional positions in life. I am one of those young men. He has

helped ne tremendously during my life here in Dallas. Just being around him listening to his philosophy has made me a better person. I was born in the great city of Honey Grove, Texas, and being in Honey Grove you would probably never meet an Icon such as Mr. Blair. Mr. Blair can talk you into becoming a greater person some how. I do not understand it, but he can make you believe in yourself. I probably know Mr. Blair better than a lot of people in the city of Dallas. There are some things about him that hits you right in the face. First of all Mr. Blair is a awesome family man and he teaches his children to be family wise. One of his sons right now have three children in college at the same time. Everybody knows him also Jordan Blair. #2 Mr. Blair believes in Blair, if he decides to do something, believe me he will do it. #3 Mr. Blair has helped a lot of people get to where they are today, and expected nothing in return. #4 If Bill Blair ever do anything for you in any way, you will never hear of it again unless you tell someone, because he sure is not going to tell a soul. When he agrees to help you, or do anything for you, that will be between three (3) people. You him, and God, and that’s where it will stay unless you tell someone else, because he is surely not going to do so. There are some people from Dallas that Mr. Blair has helped to become millionaires, and has never ask for nothing in return. This I know. Let us not forget to read our Bibles. May God bless you REAL GOOD, and may He ever keep you in His loving care.

Advice Column: Ask Dr. Hollie

Courageous Choice

H

ow was David able to make the courageous decision to fight, not fear? David had something none of the rest had: faith in God. In verses 45 and 46, David said to Goliath: “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin; but Geraldine I come to you in the Davidson-Hooker name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you up into my hand.” David trusted God. What giants are you facing? Fear? Doubt? Lack of self-worth? Divorce? Rising debts? Illness? There is no giant too great when you have God on your side. But, like David, you must step out in faith and make courageous choices. Here are some suggestions: 1) Look at all facts and alternatives. 2) Take your time; don’t make decisions while emotionally upset. 3) Ask yourself, “Is it wrong or right?” 4) Seek God’s guidance through prayer and Bible study. How will you know when you have the right answer? I have found that when I follow the above steps, I sometimes see a door of opportunity opening. Sometimes a door will close. But I feel certainty when the right choice eventually comes to me. I have a feeling of peace about the decision.

Notes From Union Hope

O

ur church school lesson was “Wisdom and discernment” Proverbs 25:1-10. Again we are allowed to hear the wisdom of the wise man Solomon as he Eld lloyd T. Morgan teaches about that much needed thing “Wisdom” in relationships. Proverbs 10-31. Proverbs are not intended to be understood as promises or divine guarantees. They are general principles: descriptions of how things normally work out in this life not only for the believer but for all human beings. While each of us may experience exceptions to the general principles stated in this Old Testament book, we can still rely on the Proverbs for guidance in living our daily lives. Solomon instructs humanity to study and search God’s word. The more believers know about God, the more they will reflect God’s glory. Our Morning message was delivered by

Evangelist Vickie Dean from Lk.21:2936. She spoke concerning preparation for the appearance of our Lord at the rapture. We are living in the “waiting period” because all the scriptures that need to be fulfilled before his return have been fulfilled and the warning to us live a life of expectancy. Jesus gave us signs so that we might discern the nearness of his return, but contrary to what some have said no one know the day or the hour. Men like to speculate on when he will return but the word of God is clear in Mark 13:32-33 “But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father. Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is. union Hope was the guest of Illinois Ave Baptist church where Dr. Herbert Thompson serves as the under shepherd. They were celebrating of the choir and ushers annual day. Pastor Lloyd Morgan was the guest speaker. Be blessed! Deuteronomy 5:7 You shall have no other gods before me.

Prayer Closet

T

he Lord Jesus suggested that we ought to carry our concerns into our prayer closet and shut the door and pray (Matthew 6:6). The prayer closet is a private place where one can have some quiet time with the Pastor Clarence Henderson Lord. It is a perfect place for the sinner to meet the Savior, and a place where the broken heart can be minded; where the troubled mind can find peace; a place where the burdened can be lifted and the bound can be loosed. It is certain, that if we follow the Lords divine order; we’ll be better coming out than going in our prayer closet. He promised that secret prayer brings about rewards in the open. Matthew 11:28 Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

From the Mount Our Sunday school lesson titled, “Wisdom and Discernment” Proverbs 25: 1-10, the lesson high points were, “Having godly wisdom to help deal wiht others, treating others like you want to be treated, and wisdom Johnny King will build godly relationship.” Dr. Jimmy Layton delivered the morning message. We were the guest at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Ladonia, Texas to help cclebrate their annual Homecoming, Dr. Johnny H King delivered the annual day message titled, “In Him” Colossians 1: 12-20, his high points were, “Staying in Him will destroy false teaching, staying in Him will destroy false thought and staying in Him will reveal who God and Jesus is.” This Sunday (10.2) we will be the guest at Greater Mt. Yes, the 2010 American League Champions are back in the playoffs and are strong contenders to win a Texas Rangers 1st World Series. After losing 3 to 1 in the 5th game of the best of 5 for the 2010-11 World Series, the Texas Rangers have managed to remain true to form. Adrian Beltre hit a two-run homer, Michael Young added an eighth-inning RBI single, and Texas eliminated the Angels from the playoff race with a 4-3 victory Monday night. Beltre may get the opportunity to grab the second-best record in the AL when the Rangers face the Angels on Tuesday night. Beltre strained his hamstring, which landed him on the disabled list, is hitting .367 with 27 RBIs in 22 games. The Rangers are one game ahead of the Central champ Detroit Tigers. If the Rangers win against Cleveland, and if the Tigers lose to Cleveland, the Rangers will gain home-field advantage in the division series against Boston or Tampa Bay. The Rangers will start lefty C. J. Wilson in game 1 and are leaning toward three lefties to start the playoffs. Left-handers Derek Holland and Matt Harrison would likely follow Wilson; right-hander Colby Lewis would be the #4 starter; and Ogando may be looking forward to a possible move to the Rangers bullpen. This season’s Texas Rangers are no doubt one of the best in team history. With records for the most shutouts and now they have set

page 7

the record for single-season attendance, these fans are what I call off-the-chain. The 2011 baseball season has had to be one of the hottest on record, with the weather yielding 3 digit temperatures for most of this season. undoubtedly, the Ranger’s fans are diehard fans to have come out anyway in support of the Rangers. It has been reported that over 2.9 million fans attended Ranger’s games this season. With fans like these, how can the Rangers not win the World Series? Rangers, expectations are high, so don’t disappoint the fans, because they will be there in support of you! Will you bring home the prize?

hile visiting my local supermarket, as I walked through the sliding doors, I saw this brother very relaxed sitting on a bench. I’ve seen him there so frequently I leon Simon assumed that was his office. “Say, bro let me have a dollar,” was his greeting to me. Mine to him was “Say bro, I don’t bring money to men, especially men that are sitting down.” That exchange caused me to think about our use of money. Entertainment and sports has been two avenues for a lot of successful brothers. Tiger Woods, now a billionaire as a result of being at one time the worlds best golfer. Then there’s LeBron James very successful, and the list goes on and on. What are we doing with the money?

Leon Simon Retired

Tony Dungy a couple of years ago in a visit to Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship, said that 2 years after 85% of these NFL players retire they’re broke, divorced, and in some cases homeless. Knowing all of this I think the most egregious act in our society is to see these guys get cash money and throw it at a stripper. These are people that conduct studies and testimonials, say two years after you retire son your wife, money, house and family will be gone. Knowing this these guys are the ones that act this out more than any one. As a matter of fact these are the guys that started this “making it rain.” Like it or not the starting Quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys could very well be one of the most prestigious jobs in sports. Visibility and financially you’re at the top of the heap. Look where it took Roger Staubach. Roger will eventually be one of the wealthiest men in this country. Now let’s take a look at one of these rain makers. A few years back former Starting Quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys Quincy Carter was arrested in the DFW area. His bond was $500, a local Talk show host Randy

Galloway had to pay his bail. I met Quincy’s parents so I know he’s no the victim of a broken home. Adam (pack man) Jones anther Rain maker, check his fancy’s. I have no idea what kind of money these people’s families have, but if they’re from this country, there’s a good chance that there is somebody in their family that’s short on funds. Somebody needs a light bill, water bill, and in most cases there’s a sister, brother, cousin or somebody that could use a little help getting or staying in school. And this idiot is at a strip joint throwing money at a naked woman. unemployment is at it’s highest in decades. As a matter of fact had the NFL lockout lasted two more months, some of these guys that are under contract would have suffered the same fate as the 85% that are homeless in retirement. If by chance you’re in the Valley Ranch Area on Tuesday mornings go to the Cowboys practice field, and see some of these Rain makers getting paid. You would think they have direct deposit. Even the Army’s got that.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month - Celebrating 25 Years of Awareness, Education, and Empowerment Special to Elite News

T

he National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) organization is a partnership of national public service organizations, professional medical associations, and government agencies working together to promote breast cancer awareness, share information on the disease, and provide greater access to screening services. In 2009, NBCAM celebrates its 25th anniversary. Since its inception a quarter century ago, NBCAM has been at the forefront of promoting awareness of breast cancer issues and has evolved along with the national dialogue on breast cancer. Today, NBCAM recognizes that although many great strides have been made in breast cancer awareness and treatment, there remains much to be accomplished. As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, we remain dedicated to educating and empowering women to take charge of their own breast health by practicing regular self-breast exams to identify any changes, scheduling regular visits and annual mammograms with their healthcare provider, adhering to prescribed treatment, and knowing the facts about recurrence. Women who are diagnosed with breast cancer late in life are at an increased risk of dying from the disease than

younger patients, reveals study. The results point to shortcomings in patient care for elderly women as well as differences in the progress of the disease. Researchers led by Professor Christos Markopoulos from Athens university Medical School (Athens, Greece) used the population of the Tamoxifen Exemestane Adjuvant Multinational (TEAM) trial to examine competing causes of death in post-menopausal women with early breast cancer. Participants were treated with exemestane for five years or tamoxifen for 2.5 years followed by exemestane for 2.5 years. This use of the data was possible because, after five years, the trial had found no difference in outcomes between the two treatments it was comparing. The 9,766 patients were classified by their age at diagnosis, separating those below 65 years of age, those between 65 and 75, and those above 75. All patients had hormone receptor positive tumours, 50% had node negative disease, 68% received radiotherapy, and 36% received chemotherapy. An analysis of their progress over the 5.1 years of the trial found that although the risk of dying from causes other than breast cancer was much higher in elderly patients, the risk of dying of breast cancer also increased with age. Applying a statistical method that takes into account the risk of competing causes of death in the elderly popula-

tion, it was found that the risk of dying from breast cancer was indeed greater for those diagnosed later in age. While October is recognized as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the www.NBCAM.org Web site is a year-round resource for breast cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, and the general public. We encourage you to visit our site in October and regularly throughout the year as we add updated breast cancer information and resources.

NBC 5 Anchor/Reporter donates kidney to her mother Special to Elite News

N

BC 5 anchor/reporter, Kristi Nelson, is on a mission to help educate people about the relationship between diabetes, high blood pressure and kidney failure. And she also wants to help eradicate the myths and misperceptions that might be keeping African Americans from being living donors. Kristi donated a kidney to her mother, Helen Nelson, on Aug. 18. Kristi told her touching, personal story of donating a kidney to her mother in a multi-part series titled “Kristi’s Gift,” which aired the week of the transplant on NBC 5. “I did it because she’s my mother and I love her and I think she has a wonderful spirit,”

said Nelson. “I also think it’s an especially important message to send to minority communities, including African Americans and Hispanics. The message is that we need to take care of ourselves and that if we do have contributing factors to kidney disease, we can control them.” Kristi’s Gift” examined kidney disease, organ donation and transplantation from the caring and emotional perspective of a mother and daughter. Nelson is the youngest of four siblings, and learned with her mother in early 2010 that a transplant was needed. Health concerns prevented her other siblings from being donor candidates. Before the transplant, Helen had been on dialysis for over a year, and Kristi saw the burden it put on her mother’s life. Helen also

suffered through frequent infections and surgeries while on dialysis. According to the National Kidney Foundation, 26 million Americans have chronic kidney disease and millions of others are at increased risk, especially African Americans, Hispanics, Pacific Islanders, Native Americans and seniors. In Texas, more than 10,000 people await organs and 8,000 of those need kidneys according to the Southwest Transplant Alliance. 80 percent of those needing kidneys are minorities. “This is a very important issue for African Americans,” said Kristi. “We are most likely to suffer kidney failure because we are also the most likely to suffer from high blood pressure and diabetes, which are the main causes of kidney failure. We are also the least likely to be living donors, which is sad, because we are the people who need these organs the most!” Also, compared with candidates of other races, African American transplant candidates are less likely to receive transplants from living donors. During her research, Kristi went to downtown Dallas and interviewed people on the street. She said many people she spoke to had no idea there was a relationship between obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and kidney disease. “I am an Oak Cliff native, and I have hundreds of relatives here in Dallas,” she said. “And I can tell you from personal experience that people don’t know that these are major public health problems.”

www.dfwelitenews.com

And, Kristi says, people need to know that their health choices can affect not just themselves, but also their family members. “Since kidney disease is often silent without any symptoms, it can sneak up on people, particularly those who are not aware of the major risk factors,” National Kidney Foundation Serving Texas, Director of Programs, Mark Edwards said. “Early detection, managing diabetes, and keeping a person’s blood pressure under control can make a difference in preventing kidney disease from becoming kidney failure.” “Kristi’s generosity in publicly sharing her story should help many African Americans in Texas see that donating a kidney while alive, or donating organs after death, is a very loving and caring thing to do,” said Pam Silvestri, Public Affairs Director, Southwest Transplant Alliance. Kristi returned to work at NBC 5 on Sept. 19, where regularly anchors NBC 5 First at Four, but can be seen throughout the day on other newscasts. The reports about the transplant were collected in a special section on NBCDFW.com also called “Kristi’s Gift”, and Kristi is still posting updates about her mother’s recovery on her Facebook page as well as on her Twitter account @pressgirldallas, with the hashtag #KristisGift. NBC 5 / KXAS-TV is the NBC-owned television station servicing the communities of North Texas with quality news and entertainment programming on NBC 5 and online at NBCDFW.com

How About a 16-1 Form of Government? If the proposed redistricting map is approved it would mean that Hispanics will pick up a fourth council seat and African Americans’ representation on the council will decrease to three. But, in light of all the controversy surrounding redistricting, what would happen if the residents and voters of Dallas would hold a charter election and adopt a 16-1 form of government? Is it possible that a 16-1 form of government would solve the City of Dallas’ redistricting problems and give all the residents of Dallas equal representation around the horseshoe for now and in the future? Just something for the citizens of Dallas to think about… What do you think?

n just a few weeks, the City of Dallas will redraw the City’s district lines. The question on the minds of many of the residents, and City officials as well is: “Who will lose their seats? And will African Americans lose council representation as a result of the newly drawn district lines? And why did our city leaders vote on a map that could jeopardize African Americans’ seat at the “table?” These questions and concerns prompted City of Dallas residents gathered at City Hall chambers on September 24th to voice their opinions regarding the newly proposed redistricting map. The redistricting process is done every 10 years, as a result of the census and the intent of redistricting is to reflect a city’s changing demographics. The plan being considered, (referred to as Plan 16), has been drawing quite a bit of controversy. At present, there are four council representatives from the City’s southern sector. But, the newly proposed redistricting map will cut representation from the Southern sector to three seats. It could mean that representatives from District 4 (Dwaine Caraway), District 7 (Carolyn Davis), District 8 (Tennell Atkins) and District 5 (Vonciel Hill) may lose their seats on the City council.
