he Rev. Fred L. Shuttlesworth, who was bombed, beaten and repeatedly arrested in the fight for civil rights and hailed by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. for his courage and tenacity, has died. He was 89. Relatives and hospital officials said Shuttlesworth died Wednesday at Princeton Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham. A former truck driver who studied religion at night, Shuttlesworth became pastor of Bethel Baptist Church in Birmingham in 1953 and soon emerged as an outspoken leader in the struggle for racial equality. “My church was a beehive,” Shuttlesworth once said. “I made the movement. I made the challenge.

Birmingham was the citadel of segregation, and the people wanted to march.” In his 1963 book “Why We Can’t Wait,” King called Shuttlesworth “one of the nation’s most courageous freedom fighters ... a wiry, energetic and indomitable man.” Birmingham Mayor William Bell ordered city flags lowered to half-staff until after Shuttleworth’s funeral. Bell, who is black, said he would not be mayor if not for leaders like Shuttlesworth. “Dr. Shuttlesworth means so much to this city and his legacy will continue for generations,” he said. Shuttlesworth survived a 1956 bombing, an assault during a 1957 demonstration, chest injuries when Birmingham authorities turned fire hoses on demonstrators in 1963, and countless arrests.

When God Calls Exodus 3:1-22 ow Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-inlaw, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the desert and came to Horeb, the henry Nelson mountain of God.2There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up.3So Moses thought, "I will go over and see this strange sight why the bush does not burn up." 4When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, "Moses! Moses!"4And Moses said, "Here I am."5"Do not come any closer," God said. "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground."6Then he said, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob." At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God. 7The Lord said, "I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have

N

heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering.8So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey—the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.9And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them.10So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt."11But Moses said to God, "Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?"12And God said, "I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you[a] will worship God on this mountain." 13Moses said to God, "Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they ask me, 'What is his name?' Then what shall I tell them?"14God said to Moses, "I am who I am.[b] This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I am has sent me to you.' "15God also said to Moses, "Say to the Israelites, 'The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of

Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.' This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation. 16"Go, assemble the elders of Israel and say to them, 'The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob appeared to me and said: I have watched over you and have seen what has been done to you in Egypt.17And I have promised to bring you up out of your misery in Egypt into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites—a land flowing with milk and honey.' 18"The elders of Israel will listen to you. Then you and the elders are to go to the king of Egypt and say to him, 'The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. Let us take a three-day journey into the desert to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God.'19But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go unless a mighty hand compels him.20So I will stretch out my hand and strike the Egyptians with all the wonders that I will perform among them. After that, he will let you go. 21"And I will make the Egyptians favorably disposed toward this people, so that when you leave you will not go emptyhanded.22Every woman is to ask her neighbor and any woman living in her

C ity B eat house for articles of silver and gold and for clothing, which you will put on your sons and daughters. And so you will plunder the Egyptians." If you have ever read missionary biographies, they are full of stories of people who have given up a normal life and in many cases extraordinary careers, to go to other parts of the world to tell people about Jesus. I guess most of us are familiar with the film Chariots of Fire: about Eric Liddell, the runner who refused to compete on the Sabbath and so was unable to win the 100 meters Gold Medal in the Olympics. But I wonder how many people realize that not only did he give up that medal, but a couple of years later he went off to China as a missionary, giving up his athletic ambitions altogether. I was given a book of biographies a few years ago by Isabel Kuhn, who was also a missionary in China. One of the biographies is of a man named Fraser, who was a brilliant musician, able to memorize whole symphonies and concertos, yet who gave up all thought of fame and fortune on the concert stage in order to serve God in preaching the gospel to the people of China. And there are countless other examples. If you would like to have the entire message please request it at: revelations_75044@msn.com

Wall Street Protest It’s More Than You Think By: Jordan Blair

ELITE nEWS PuBLISHER

T

here is a belief among some that those earning over $1 million should pay very little in federal taxes. I’m not advocating that these individuals should be over taxed, but at least should carry their share of the tax burden. Continuing to pass the burden to the middle class and the less fortunate is not the answer, and will only lead to more problems. Back in 1993, then President Bill Clinton invoked a modest tax on the rich. That action brought a decade of prosperity to the majority of the American people. This created a budget surplus that was passed on to then President, George W. Bush. The surplus was never protected by the GOP majority by giving tax cuts to the rich, which turned out to be the wrong thing to do for this country. Some say that because of the way the surplus was handled is the reason the economy is in this mess. Surely, what the American people would like is for the party of “no” to get their heads out of the sand, listen to the people and work with our current President. The Wall Street protest is more than you think. We are starting to see people from all walks of life get involved in this movement because people are just plain tired of not being heard and being pushed aside. People are tired of being treated like their families just don’t matter. It’s been reported that the Democratic Party moved a step closer to embracing the “Occupy Wall Street” movement as its own with the top campaign arm for House Democrats sending around a petition urging people to “stand with” the movement. In an email sent Monday, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) Director, Robby Mook, appealed for signatures to an online petition in support of those who want “to let billionaires, big oil and big bankers know that we’re not going to let the richest 1% force draconian economic policies and massive cuts to crucial programs on Main Street Americans.” The DCCC is trying to gather 100,000 names on the petition to “send a message straight to Eric Cantor, Speaker Boehner, and the rest of reckless Republican leadership in Congress.” The appeal comes after House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and other Republicans sharply criticized the protesters on Friday. At a Values Voter Summit in Washington, Cantor said he was "increasingly concerned about the growing mobs occupying Wall Street and the other cities across the country." He described them as "the pitting of Americans against Americans," and scolded those who would condone them. "Getting American back to work means fueling a culture of entrepreneurialism, a culture of competitiveness, a culture of inspira-

tion and optimism," he said. At the same summit, businessman and GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain called the demonstrations "anti-capitalism" and "anti-free market." On CBS' "Face the nation" on Sunday, Cain said it is "anti-American" to protest bankers. He said Wall Street didn't write the "failed economic policies." In response to Cantor, House Democratic Leader nancy Pelosi said Cantor is being selective in his criticism of popular movements. "I didn't hear him say anything when the Tea Party was out demonstrating, actually spitting on members of Congress right here in the Capitol, and he and his colleagues were putting signs in the windows encouraging them," she told ABC's "This Week." Pelosi said she backs the protesters in their message. Former President Bill Clinton, as a guest on the David Letterman show, said that these marches are part of being an American, but must be well-organized and guided. In conclusion, if you are out of work, laid off, your company is down-sizing and you are concerned about your job, or have lost your home, these are reasons to join this movement, tell your story and occupy a missing void. By: Lola Searcy

H

e’s no stranger to the State of Texas, and certainly not to the City of Dallas. He is the former Mayor of the City of Dallas, turned united States Trade Representative. And on last Friday he came home to Texas, visiting the State Fair of Texas on Friday and Eastfield College on last Tuesday to promote President Obama’s American Jobs Act. The first stop on the visit back to his home state was to give the keynote address at the Texas Economic Development Council’s 50th Annual Conference in Fort Worth where he discussed the impact the American Jobs Act will have on Texas’ economy, once it is passed. “From teachers to construction workers to families struggling to pay their mortgage, the American Jobs Act will invest in cities across this state and help put Texans back to work, while also helping to grow and expand Texas businesses,” said Ambassador Ron Kirk. “In addition, the pending trade agreements with Korea, Colombia and Panama will help increase Texas exports to consumers around the world. These are two very real examples of how President Obama is working tirelessly to ensure Texas businesses continue to have the markets and consumers available to them to sell their quality 'Made in America' goods and support more jobs here at home.” He then traveled back to Dallas where he attended a youth livestock show with Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson and spoke with representatives from Ford Motor Company. Afterwards, he spoke with reporters about his role as Trade Ambassador in the President’s American Jobs Act. “Whenever the President and I talk, we discuss how the portfolio I have and the trade agenda can help him with his most impor-

tant objective, and that is getting the economy going and creating jobs.” So, when Ambassador Kirk was asked about comments that President Obama does not care about people being out of work and unemployed, he had this to say, “When you think back to the election, the biggest knock on the President was that he was a community organizer. As a community organizer, his job was working with families who had been displaced from their jobs and helping them find employment. nothing that resonates with him more, there is nothing that he carries with him every day than how everything we do impacts a family’s ability to get a job.” Ambassador Kirk says the President realizes there is going to be opposition to the Jobs Act, but the American people are saying, ‘do what you can do right now’ and he (the President) is willing to fight for the American people, and he is going to continue to take this argument to the American people until we get action because American families and American businesses need help now. “There is going to be an election next year and there will be plenty of time to debate bi-partisan politics, but right now, we need to pass this Jobs Act,” said Ambassador Kirk. “If passed, the American Jobs Act will add an additional 70,000 jobs to the Texas economy.” Ambassador Kirk also used the visit to highlight Texas’ status as America’s leading state exporter. Last year, Texas exported $207 billion in goods to the world, accounting for 17.1 percent of Texas’ Gross Domestic Product (GDP). That same year, Texas’ top goods export categories were computer and electronic products, chemicals, and petroleum and coal products. In 2008, the last year for which data is available, an estimated 795,000 jobs were supported by Texas goods exports. Texas is the third largest agricultural exporting state, shipping $6.1 billion in agricultural exports abroad or 5.6 percent of the u.S.

The Hard Part

W

e are often quick to ask for forgiveness, but slow to give it. We like to think the two are separated, but in the Lord’s Prayer they are connected. This part of the prayer is spoken differently by various traditions. Some say “debtors”; others say “those who trespass Geraldine against us”; and still Davidson-hooker others “those who sin against us.” Regardless of word choice, however, the fact remains that this section of the prayer calls us to responsibility. We are expected to forgive others in order to fully experience our own forgiveness. Even though in Christ we have received forgiveness for our sins, we still continue to ask for forgiveness because of the peace that comes from each act of forgiveness. When we forgive others, we participate in Christ’s forgiveness. When we witness the power of forgiveness in another person’s life, we more fully feel our own forgiveness. God requires us to forgive others because it falls under the category of treating others how we want to be treated: the Golden Rule. Forgiveness is a dynamic state of ongoing giving and receiving. Only when we submit to our responsibility to forgive others as we ask God to forgive us can we enjoy the fullness of Calvary. To be forgiven . . . and to forgive . . . is a gift. Open it!

would love to think that the conversation in our prayer closet is much more than “give me this and give me that”. The attitude of thanksgiving is an important prelude to prayer. When we lift our hearts to God we should thank Him for the assurPastor Clarence ance we have that He will henderson bless us. He is honored by our turning to Him, for this is the desire of the heart of God. Through our act of faith we separate ourselves from our selfish concerns and lean wholly on Him. In the very essence of prayer it is natural for God, under such circumstances, to bless us. So, even before we utter our request, our hearts should be overflowing with thanksgiving. When we think of the goodness of Jesus and all He has done for us, our soul cries out hallelujah. I think what I am trying to say is when we began to think, we aught to began to thank.

Notes From Union Hope

ur Church school lesson was “The Superiority of W i s d o m ” Ecclesiastes 9:1318. Everyone likes a story with a happy ending, but this one does eld lloyd T. Morgan not end that way. The writer of Ecclesiastes is telling us this parable from the viewpoint of the activities “under the sun,” that is, on this earth without eternity in view. In this story, a powerful army was besieging a small city. If this story were a fairy tale, it would have a happy ending. The poor but wise man would be honored by everyone. A statue would be erected in his honor. He might even be elected to high office! But that didn’t happen. Soon his wisdom that saved the city was forgotten, and he was forgotten as well. He went back to being a “nobody,” living in poverty. In fact, in the future, when his wisdom could have continued to profit the little city, no one paid any

attention to what he said. The morning message was delivered by Pastor Morgan from the subject “He is Able” Jude 24-25. What a magnificent doxology this is! Knowing the purpose Jude had in mind when he wrote this letter, this doxology takes on even greater significance. Jude was reminding his readers of the greatness of Jesus Christ. If only they could catch that, they would never be led astray by false teachers. If you will remember the Word of God, build your Christian life in faith, hope, and love, exercise spiritual discernment, and commit yourself to Christ, then He will keep you from stumbling. Be alert! The enemy is subtle and the dangers are great. But the only wise God your Savior will keep you safe and one day present you joyfully in glory! The union Hope church choir will celebrate their Annual day Oct.23, @ 3:30 p.m they invite all of their friends and well wishers to join them in their celebration. Be Blessed! hile working at KLIF AM radio as a talk show host, the powers that be gave our show the unique name “The Sports Brothers.” The uniqueness of the name came from leon Simon the fact that my partner, Wally Lynn was white. I have discovered another unique couple of guys. Michael Vick and Tony Romo whom I feel are twins. The difference in their race is that the only thing that I feel separates them from almost being the same guy or at least identical twins. Skip Bayless, who took a temporary leave to write a book, caused Wally and me the opportunity to get that show. Skip was to never get that gig back, moved on in his new capacity as host of ESPn’s “First and Ten.”

Skip analyzed Tony Romo perfectly, and his description of Tony fits Michael Vick as well, in fact even better than Tony. Skip said “Tony doesn’t choke, he doesn’t make bad decisions, and he’s arrogantly cocky. Tony is very smart and he know that these are bad situation he’s in. his arrogance allows him to throw into triple coverage.” His hero is Brett Favre, enough said. These guys think they can make the ESPn high light films by doing it their way with their strong arm. Brett Favre lost a chance to go to a Super Bowl and his last play with the Vikings throwing an interception when he could have taken a knee. Brett played over 20 yrs and only one Super Bowl . They call him gunslinger, I call it arrogance. After watching Philadelphia and Vick yesterday I saw Tony Romo, and Favre. At the end of the first half the Eagles was down 21 -7, 13 seconds left the ball on Buffalos 20 yd line. Vick used 5 seconds to throw a pass, leaving 8 sec. The intelligent thing to do was to kick and at least get 3 points. Philadelphia lines up to run another play, knowing this, the announcer said they could pull this off, but Vick must plant and throw, no time to shuffle his

feet and look around. 8 seconds no timeouts what did Tony’s twin brother do? Shuffle around till the clock expired before he throws an incomplete pass. I’m not blaming Vick for the lost because they do have a head coach named Andy Reed and I equate him to Wade Phillips (Capt Kangaroo). I also believe that if Tony Romo had thrown 4 interceptions yesterday as Vick did in their lost to Buffalo, every news cast in this country would have that as a lead story. Since the Eagles was the lead story, should or will Philadelphia fire their defensive coordinator Juan Castillo? I don’t think the similarities stop with Vick and Tony; sometimes I think Philadelphia and Dallas are the same team. I don’t believe anyone can blow a lead as well as Dallas and Philadelphia. That could explain why there is so much hate between these two teams, there’s still a ton of people that think of Michael Vick as a Hall of Fame type quarterback, if he is. Tony will go in the Hall on the same ballot because Tony and Michael are twins; one is just faster than the other.

Civil Rights icon, Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth dies at 89

continued from front cover......

“I went to jail 30 or 40 times, not for fighting or stealing or drugs,” Shuttlesworth told grade school students in 1997. “I went to jail for a good thing, trying to make a difference said Shuttlesworth. Alabama’s first black federal judge, u.W. Clemon, said Shuttlesworth flung himself at injustice well knowing he could be killed at any moment. “He was the first black man I knew who was totally unafraid of white folks,” said Clemon, who retired from the bench and is now a privately practicing attorney. And in november 2008, Shuttlesworth watched from a hospital bed as Sen. Barack Obama was elected the nation’s first African-American president. The year before, Obama had pushed Shuttlesworth’s wheelchair across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma during a commemoration of the Selma-to-Montgomery voting rights march — a moment Obama recalled Wednesday. In Washington, Obama released a statement lauding Shuttlesworth as a “testament to the strength of the human spirit” and said America owes him a “debt of gratitude” for his fight for equality. In the early 1960s, Shuttlesworth had invited King back to Birmingham. Televised scenes of police dogs and fire hoses being turned on black marchers, including children, in the spring of 1963 helped the rest of the nation grasp the depth of racial animosity in the Deep South. “He marched into the jaws of death every day in Birmingham before we got there,” said Andrew young, the former Atlanta mayor and u.n. ambassador who served as an aide to King. young said it was Shuttlesworth’s fearlessness that persuaded King to take

the struggle to Birmingham. “We shouldn’t have been strong enough to take on Birmingham ... But God had a plan that was far better than our plan,” young said. “Fred didn’t invite us to come to Birmingham. He told us we had to come.” According to a May 1963 new york Times profile of Shuttlesworth, Connor responded to the word Shuttlesworth had been injured by the spray of fire hoses by saying: “I’m sorry I missed it. ... I wish they’d carried him away in a hearse.” While King won international fame, Shuttlesworth was relatively little known outside Alabama. But he was a key figure in Spike Lee’s 1997 documentary, “4 Little Girls,” about the September 1963 Birmingham church bombing that killed four black children. Shuttlesworth was born March 18, 1922, near Montgomery and grew up in Birmingham. As a child, he knew he would either be a minister or a doctor and by 1943, he decided to enter the ministry. It was 1954 when King, then a pastor in Montgomery, came to Birmingham to give a speech and asked to stop by Bethel Baptist and meet Shuttlesworth. Then in late 1955 in Montgomery, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a city bus, prompting the boycott led by King that gave new impetus to the civil rights movement. In January 1956, King’s Montgomery home was bombed while he attended a rally. Eleven months later, on Christmas night 1956, 16 sticks of dynamite were detonated outside Shuttlesworth’s bedroom as he slept at the Bethel Baptist parsonage. no one was injured in either bombing, although shards of glass and wood pierced

Shuttleworth’s coat and hat left hanging on a hook. The next day, Shuttlesworth led 250 people in a protest of segregation on buses in Birmingham. In 1957, he was beaten by a mob when he tried to enroll two of his children in an all-white school in Birmingham. In Cincinnati, Shuttlesworth left Revelation Baptist Church and became pastor of the Greater new Light Baptist Church in 1966. (Copyright ©2011 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)

How Much Is Enough Time? By: Jordan Blair

ELITE nEWS PuBLISHER

I

n Loving memory of Coach Larry Eugene Phillips, May 1, 1959October 2, 2011. Larry Eugene Phillips lived a truly blessed life. His deeds in between the dashes (1959 – 2011) were on display at his home going service. The Church was full of family, friends, clergy, church members, students, and well-wishers for his wife, Rev. Quintalyn Phillips, lovingly known as Rev. Quinny. How much is enough time? This is the question Bishop Bryant asked when he spoke at the home going service of Bro. Larry Phillips, on Tuesday, October 12, 2011. “I live in Downtown Chicago and I saw a crowd outside the Apple Store. That was a monument to Steve Jobs, and it was said that he is gone too soon.” “MLK died at the age of 39. Did he have enough time? Larry Phillips at age 52 - did he have enough time? How much time is enough time?”

“What’s wrong with God? God took his own son out at 32 years of age. I want to tell you that Larry had enough time. Would you rather live a short time with tremendous impact or a long time with no impact? Larry got it right,” said Bishop Bryant. Very powerful words spoken by Bishop Bryant. Coach Larry Phillips got it right. Larry Phillips was not a simple collector of a paycheck. He became a teacher and a coach. He was named the 2011 Teacher of the year at James Madison High School. He also led the Madison freshman football team to the 2007 District 11 31A Championship. Coach Phillips contributed in ways that mattered. The church was packed on Tuesday, just a portion of the testament of how Larry Phillips lived his life. People were there from all walks of life, the example of a Rainbow Coalition. Bishop Bryant said that God has given us His most precious commodity, Time. Stop taking up space and make a differ-

continued from page 12............................... ence in your life and someone else’s life. He said to weep for those who are yet alive because life is a body of time given to us. “I want someone to choose God,” said Bishop Bryant. Many of Coach Larry Phillips’ kids were in attendance and Bishop Bryant ministered to them as well, and many of them dedicated their life to Christ that day. Larry Eugene Phillips - born in Killeen, Texas to the proud parents of Charles and nancy Phillips. Larry was the fourth of seven children. Larry was a real success story. He had a loving devotion to everything that he did. His devotion was to God, family, friends and his job. Larry attended and received his education in the Killeen School District. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education and Social Studies from Paul Quinn College in Waco, Texas. He worked on his Masters degree at Lehman College in Bronx, ny. He was a student teacher for the yonkers Public School System in yonkers, ny. While in new york, Larry was a cottage counselor at Children’s Village, Dobbs Ferry, ny and at Spofford Juvenile Detention Center in Bronx, ny. He was a teacher and physical education instructor. In Dallas, Texas, Larry taught history and coached several different sports throughout his career at Madison High School, Pinkston High

School, and Thomas Edison Middle School. He coached with the devotion of a father, stern discipline and loving. The children knew that when Coach Phillips disciplined them he was teaching, considering their growth and enhancing their maturity, while caring. He expected the best from them and would not let them settle for less. Because of his devotion to Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, his fraternity brothers were more like real brothers. They valued Larry’s friendship and caring spirit. Of course, his wife and his family knew better than anyone the gift of having Larry as a part of their life. Larry departed this life on October 2, 2011, in Dallas, Texas. He was predeceased by his father, Charles L. Phillips and two sisters, Letha Phillips and Cynthia Phillips. Those left to cherish his life: a loving and devoted wife of 27 years, Quintalyn Williams Phillips; mother, nancy Phillips; brothers, Wayne Kenny Phillips and Cortez L. Phillips (Beverly); sisters, Dianne Lawrence (Alby) and Jackie Roberts (Garland); and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Gone yet not forgotten, Although we are apart, your spirit lives within me, Forever in my heart. www.dfwelitenews.com
