It is being fought right here on our soil as well as in many other nations. It is a war for the minds and hearts of people between the forces of good and evil, between God and Satan. The stakes in this war are high because the price is heaven or hell, life or death, darkness or light, freedom or slavery, reward of puni s h m e n t .

Recently National Geographic ran an article about the Alaskan Bull Moose. The males of the species battle for dominance during the fall breeding season, literally going head-to-head with antlers crunching together as they collide.

Often the antlers, their only weapon are broken.

That ensures defeat. The heftiest moose, with the largest and strongest antlers, triumphs.

Therefore, the battle fought in the fall is really won during the summer, when the moose eat continually. The one that consumes the best diet for growing antlers and gaining weight will be the heavyweight in the fight. Those that eat inadequately sport weaker antlers and less bulk.

There is a lesson here for us. Spiritual battles await. Satan will choose a season to attack. Will you be victorious, or will we fall? Much

depends on what you do now before the wars begin. The bull-moose principle: Enduring faith, strength, and wisdom for trials are best developed before they’re needed.

One thing is certain. We cannot afford to be ignorant of this invisible war because it is waged right here and now! The enemy of our souls wants to gain control of our hearts and minds. Look at verse 12 of our text. Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual powers. A consultant firm conducted a poll in which they discovered the following.

Nearly two out of three American adults (62%) agreed that Satan is not a living being but a symbol of evil. And even more alarming is that among evangelical Christians, 52% deny Satan’s existence! 72% of Catholics say the devil is non-existent. Conclusion: One of the major battlefields is taking place within the Church!

This warfare can be summarized by looking at four things: (1) Our Adversary, (2) Our Armor, (3) Our Allies, (4) Our Plan of Attack Our Adversary who is Satan has Many Aliases.(Satan, Lucifer,. Devil, Serpent, Prince of this world,. Prince of demons, Dragon, Father of lies, Tempter, Angel of light, Accuser of the brethren His Power, 1. A fallen angel (highly intelli-

Power to afflict people w/sickness, 4. Able to sift the saints,5. Limited power–not equal with God, a created being His Work 1. Tempts, 2. Perverts the truth, 3.

Opposes God’s purposes, 4. Assumes many disguises, 5. Hinders the Gospel, 6. Creates doubt, denial and confusion, 7. Blinds multitudes to the truth 8. Seeks to destroy faith, 9. Seeks to discredit Christ, 10. Makes sin attractive, 11.

Tries to break up families, 12. Tries to give the world another gospel humanism, moralism, universalism, ritualism, evolution 13. Seeks to discredit the Church His Angels (Fallen) 1. Some are free to roam the earth, fulfilling Satan’s commands 2. Some are bound in darkness until the Day of Judgment, E. His Defeat, 1. Accomplished on the cross and verified by the resurrection of Christ, 2. Permitted to operate as a usurper until the time of his final imprisonment.

His Doom 1. At the close of the millennial reign of Christ, he will be loosed for a season and then God will cast him into the lake of fire, never to return again. Amen!

“Taste Test” / 19 Days til Thanksgiving

Giblet Gravy

Ingredients: Turkey giblets (from whole turkey, thawed if frozen) 2 medium stalks celery, sliced (1 cup) Jordan Blair II 1 medium onion, sliced 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper Drippings from roasted turkey 1/4 cup Progresso® chicken broth (from 32oz carton), if needed 1/4 cup Gold Medal® all-purpose flour Salt and pepper to taste

Make It: In 2-quart saucepan, place giblets (except liver); add enough water to cover. Add celery, onion, 1 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper.

Heat to boiling; reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer 1 to 2 hours or until giblets are tender.

Add liver during last 15 minutes of cooking.

Drain giblet mixture, reserving broth and giblets. Discard celery and onion. After removing turkey from roasting pan, remove 1/2 cup drippings (turkey juices and fat); reserve. Pour

remaining drippings into 2-cup measuring cup; add enough giblet broth and chicken broth to measure 2 cups; set aside.

Place reserved 1/2 cup drippings in roasting pan or 12-inch skillet. Stir in flour. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly and scraping up brown bits in pan, until smooth and browned.

Gradually stir in 2 cups broth mixture. Cook, stirring constantly, until mixture boils and thickens. Remove meat from neck; finely chop meat and giblets and add to gravy if desired. Stir in salt and pepper.

ow many times have you gone out to eat and you are ravished, hungry, starving, and ready to eat right then and there.

The waiter can’t move fast enough. Then the food comes and you eat, eat, and eat.

Afterwards, you are not satisfied. The food was not worth the wait and you are a bit disappointed.

Buttons Jazz Café, modeled after the popular jazz clubs and speakeasies of the 30’s and 40’s, provides a venue for enjoying southern-cuisines, like Chicken and Waffles, Old School Pot Roast and Shrimp, Fish and Gritz, as well as tasty cocktails. you will definitely notice the work of J. Kim Interior Designs, the raised stage with the Steinway piano, and the chef table constructed of crushed recycled glass and many other creative features.

“Buttons Jazz Café is the next step of the movement,” said Chef Keith Hicks. “We really offer an experience at Buttons, and use the food and the music to bring people together. That is what the vision of Buttons is all about.”

On October 28, Buttons hosted their Jazz Café Media Lunch. As guests arrived, a welcome was given as well as the history of Buttons Jazz Café, including the weekly lineup and other pertinent information. Chef Hicks was on hand to diagram every entre that was being sampled by the media. Just to name a few, Flash Fried Skrimpz, Buttons Alfredo, Spinach Salad, Grilled Chicken and vegetables. These are just a few of the many

items that were sampled.

General Manager Sarah Freddie and the staff put on a tremendous presentation of the food and ambience of what Buttons had to offer. The menu was modestly priced, and I can’t say enough about the delicious taste of the food. I, like other members of the media, were overly impressed. If you are looking for good food at a good price and a relaxing atmosphere with good service, look no further. Buttons in DeSoto is the place for you. After sampling the entrées at the Media Lunch, I was so impressed I took my wife back the following Tuesday and we weren’t disappointed. I had the Shrimp, Fish and Gritz with an egg over easy, topped off with hollandaise sauce and it was excellent. My wife had the Chicken Wangs and Spinach Salad with an Apple Cider Vinaigrette dressing. This is exactly what the doctor ordered for DeSoto.

n Sunday, October 30th, the Armstrong AME Church family, located in South Arlington, honored their Pastor and First Lady, Rev. Marlon Jones and Mrs. Scherrie Jones with their first annual appreciation service and celebration. It was a short but power-packed program. Sis. Elnora Davis gave a stirring tribute to Rev. Marlon and Sis. Debbie Tolliver, First Lady of St. Paul AME, followed with a tribute to

Rev. Dan Pride, Rev. Marlon Jones and Rev. Juan Tolliver

First Lady Scherrie. Armstrong invited St. Paul AME Church, where Rev. Juan Tolliver is the pastor and spiritual leader, as their special guests to join in the celebration.

Before becoming pastor of Armstrong, Rev. Marlon was a member and young minister at St. Paul AME Church. He was actively involved with the youth at St. Paul, a member of the E. L. Wright Male Chorus, and just a wonderful assistant minister. Rev. Marlon also hosted a prayer line for members to call in and just have a word of prayer. What a powerful ministry. Everyone loved him and hated to see him move on, but know that he is destined for greater things now and to come. He has already made tremendous strides at Armstrong AME and his congregation loves him and is growing week by week.

The members of St. Paul showed up in large numbers to support Rev. Marlon, First Lady Scherrie and their family because they are loved and will be missed by the St. Paul congregation.

Right before the presentation of the Rev. Marlon, St. Paul AME choir tore up the house with their rendition of “Smile” by Kirk Franklin. Following the choir, Rev. Juan Tolliver brought a tremendous message from II Timothy 4, telling Rev. Marlon to “keep preaching” through all the things that he might encounter and go through, just keep preaching.

Rev. Marlon Jones, a Suma Cum Laude graduate of Paul Quinn College, and number 2 in his class, is a welltrained and ordained young minister. We look for God to do great things for him and his family.

Thanks to the many St. Paul members that love and support Rev. Marlon and who came out to support Armstrong AME on Sunday. It was a great time had by all. Hats off to the staff and administration for their wonderful welcoming spirit and the delicious food that was prepared for their guests. We want Armstrong to know that it was very much appreciated.

Dallas Black Dance Theatre Opens International Dance Extravaganza Festival in Belize Special to Elite News

allas Black Dance Theatre, considered by critics as one of the top (modern) dance companies in the nation, travels to Belize Nov. 4-5 to perform in the Dance Extravaganza Belize Festival hosting its first international festival in the three year history of the event.

The Bliss Center for the Performing Arts in Belize City will be the venue for the presentation of a mixture of dance styles, including classical, contemporary, hip-hop and cultural dances.

“We are extremely honored to participate in Dance Extravaganza that will feature dancers from around the world and allow Dallas Black Dance Theatre to perform for a very diverse cultural audience in Belize ,” says Ann Williams, Founder and Artistic Director, Dallas Black Dance Theatre.

The Final Victory

T

oday, all over the world, there are people facing situations which threaten to send everything they hold dear crashing to the ground. It may be the result of bad decisions or circumstances out of their control; but either way, they Geraldine awoke in the middle of a Davidson-Hooker whirlwind and cannot determine which direction to turn. There are many others who awoke tired and discouraged, and don’t even know why. Today is much the same as any other, but they are questioning the usefulness of continuing.

I can make this bold prediction about today, not because I have any insight into this particular day or period of history, but because that is the nature of life. We live in an imperfect world filled with imperfect people. The result is a bunch of imperfect circumstances! Even when we begin to walk with Jesus we struggle with these imperfections which distract us and steal our joy.

Many more people are struggling than we can possibly imagine. The need for encouragement is huge and will increase as the time of our Lord’s return draws near. Next, we need to know how we can live a life of peace and how we can pass this peace to others.

When we place our faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, we don’t receive the promise of a trouble free life; rather, we receive the promise of life eternal in the presence of God. Many of our troubles here on earth will remain. But an understanding of our eternal promise should encourage us as we shift our focus from life in terms of days and years, to life in terms of eternity; “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all” (2 Corinthians 4:17).

Jesus saw these same struggles in His disciples. He wanted them to live a life of peace and contentment, but He also knew they would face many difficulties.

After a night of teaching His disciples about their relationship with the Father through faith in His Son, Jesus gave these words of encouragement: Jesus came to conquer sin and death through His sacrifice on the cross: the battle with the true enemy has already been won! If we have come to God in faith and received the transforming gift of His Spirit, we ought to keep this victorious truth at the front of ALL our thoughts. As we climb into the ring day after day - even as we grow weary, lose a few rounds and want to quit - let’s always remember that through our risen Lord we have an eternal hope. Let’s continue with the peace and assurance that in Christ we have been granted the final victory.

he church school lesson was “Living as God’s people” Matt.5:112. Matthew 5-7 is known as the Sermon on the Mount and is a collection of Eld Lloyd T. Morgan Jesus’ teachings on spiritual maturity. The Sermon on the Mount can be summarized in one verse: “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect” (Matthew 5:48). Jesus’ sermon explained how His followers could be perfect, meaning mature and complete in Christ and all that God intended for His children to be. The Sermon on the Mount contrasts a new way of following God with the old way taught by the scribes and Pharisees. The religious leaders emphasized strict observance of the letter of the law. Jesus elaborated on the spirit of the law and displayed the heart of God revealed in the law. The morning message was delivered by Pastor Lloyd

It has been said that an author can write a good biography if he loves his subject or hates him but not if he is coldly indifferent. Of all things indifference is the hardest to combat. The problem of modem evangelism is not hostility to Christianity; it would be better if it were. The problem is that to so many Christianity and the Church have ceased to have any relevance and men regard them with complete indifference. This indifference can be broken down only by the Saints of God actual demonstration that Christianity has the power to make life strong and a grace to make life beautiful.

he early church considered prayer a spiritual gift (1 Corinthians 14:15). They prayed with the spirit of God and with understanding which was divinely given. don’t think it would be unreasonable to think that Hall of Fame type athletes have a different out look on things than an everyday 9 to 5 type guy, or an athlete that just played a certain Leon Simon sport but didn’t excel.

I’ve noticed all down through the years media types spend an awful lot of time explaining things that shouldn’t or couldn’t happen. I can go back to the early 60’s. A young skinny light heavyweight coming out of Louisville, Kentucky and fresh out of the Olympics with the light heavyweight Gold medal. Saying he was “the Greatest and the prettiest.”

That statement had the nation divided. At the time the heavyweight Champion was a very capable, very mean, and very Big Sonny Liston. Liston was a somewhat

smaller version of George Foreman. Sonny could hit guys on the elbow and knock them down. Some even thought he hit Floyd Patterson in the hair and knocked him out. Half the nation thought Sonny could be Champion as long as he wanted to be. The younger, mostly African American generation thought the growing young light heavyweight out of Kentucky was the next Champion.

The National media was certain this young Cassius Clay was out of his mind. This argument continued until Mr. Clay put a couple of whipping on Liston. All down through history, men spend way to much time telling other men what they can’t do.

Watching ESPN, First they spent half the Summer telling Cam Newton he couldn’t do the same thing in the NFL he did at Auburn. WRONG !!!!! He’s doing much better than expected.

Watching ESPN pre - game Keyshon Johnson, Chris Carter, Tom Jackson, spent a great portion of the show telling people reasons why Tim Tebow will not be successful in the NFL. The thing that struck me how easily

the used the phrase “I can’t see how……….?”

Believe me I’m not about to tell you that Tebow will be a pro- bowler or even a permanent starter. I just thought it strange that the three guys that want and campaign heavily to get Hall of fame recognition can use the “ I can’t” phrase so readily. Mike Ditka the only guy on the panel that’s in the hall. Says “ the Kid wins”. Those 3 guys that use “I Can’t .” so easily will never get in the hall.

Attitude, and not aptitude ,determines your altitude.

Can you imagine Emmitt Smith, Barry Sanders, Jerry Rice and the Walter Peyton type athletes spending a whole morning show telling people what another grown man can’t do. O.J. Simpson had brasses on his legs and couldn’t walk until he was about 6 years can you imagine him spending 3 or 4 hour telling someone else what they can’t do. Jack youngblood played a play-off game with a broken leg, how much time you think he’d spend telling someone else what they can’t d0.

ith the start of a new school year it’s easy to remember to update a child’s immunizations but Parkland Health & Hospital System staff reminds adults about the importance of keeping their own immunizations current.

“We can put our communities at risk,” said Jill Strachan-Batson, MD, staff physician, Parkland youth & Family Centers. “In this country, we tend to take our health for granted and assume we are protected against illness. But there are places where some of these diseases are still quite prevalent.”

Adults don’t need as many shots as children, but there are still preventive measures that can be taken to protect yourself, your family and your community. Women who are pregnant need to be extra vigilant.

The following adult immunization schedule is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

oles, Rev. Marke Twain Rev. Marke Twain Toles was born October 13, 1919, in Calvert, Texas to Mark T. Toles Sr. and Minnie Robertson Toles. He attended W. D. Spigner High School in Calvert, Texas. He attended Bishop College in Marshall, Texas receiving a Bach-elor of Arts Degree in Education and a Master's Degree in Education & Administration.

Post graduate work was done at university of Wisconsin and Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was the pastor of the Second Baptist Church in Kenosha, Wisconsin from 1963 to 1980. He served of the pastor of Bethany Missionary Baptist Church from July 1, 1981 until his retirement in October of 1992.

History recorded that under his administration, Bethany's final pay-ment for a new sanctuary was made. He encouraged all people to "Be the Best That you Can Be." He was always a phone call away and always had a helping hand for those in need. His ongoing promotion of Christian responsibilities, academ-ics, leadership and "Keeping Life Reasonably Simple" was his trademark.

Remembering Rev. S. M. Wright Sr. Special to Elite News

.M. Wright was born in Dallas on February 7, 1927 to the Reverend Calvin and Mary Wright. He grew up in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Dallas, the Bon Ton community. As a child, he was determined to “be somebody” so he focused on his education, graduating from Lincoln High School and earning a bachelor’s degree from Bishop College in Marshall, Texas. He later earned a master’s and doctorate degree from Bishop College.

Dr. Wright became the pastor of the People’s Missionary Baptist Church in South Dallas in 1957. A natural leader, he served as advisor to elected officials, businessmen, and civic leaders. He was known for his ability to unite ethnic groups peacefully. During the turbulent 1960s, Dr. Wright worked with city leaders to foster integration in education, employment, and political representation as well as in restaurants, hotels, shops, and swimming pools. He died on November 3, 1994. To honor his legacy, then Governor George W. Bush changed the name of Highway 175 to the S.M. Wright Freeway in 1995.
