Help for a Heartbreak Galatians 3:1-14 1”You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified.2I would like to learn just one Henry Nelson thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard?3Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort?4Have you suffered so much for nothing if it really was for nothing?5Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you observe the law, or because you believe what you heard?” 6”Consider Abraham: “He believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” 7”Understand, then, that those who believe are children of Abraham.8The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.”9So those who have
faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.” 10”All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.11Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because, “The righteous will live by faith.” 12The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, “The man who does these things will live by them.13Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.”14He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.” he other day I got a request for a message and this is how this week’s message came about. One time there was a famous newspaper reporter that phoned a story into his editor. The story was about an empty truck that had a blown tire and then had rolled down a hill and smashed into a home. The editor was unimpressed and told the reporter he did not want to run the story because it was not that big of a story. “I am glad you are taking this so
T
calmly,” the reporter said, “It was your house.” Amen! This week we are looking at “How to Deal with the Way I Feel” and more specifically at where we find “Help for a Heartbreak.” Pain, suffering, and heartbreak are familiar topics in our country today after the events of 9/11, but it does not have to be something as big as a truck smashing our house to bits, or a terrorist attack to bring about feelings of heartbreak in our lives. I can remember being a freshman in high school and trying out for the baseball team. I had played Little League for years and this was to be the crowning achievement in my young baseball career. It meant pride, and respect, and most importantly, girls. The try-outs were 2 weeks long and I felt pretty good about my chances for success. I never will forget sitting there on the dugout bench and listening to the names being read off for making the final cut. As they finished reading the names and mine was not called, I picked up my bag and headed for the gate with big tear drops in my eyes. It was just baseball, not some big life threatening thing, but it hurt, it was heartbreaking for me not to make the team. Heartbreak can come from the loss of a
C ity B eat loved one, like a grandmother, or even the loss of a cherished family pet. It can come from a boyfriend or girlfriend telling you those wonderful words, “I think we should just be friends.” Or you can experience heartbreak by people making fun of you, and being made to look foolish in front of others. From people letting you down to letting yourself down, heartbreak is seemingly around every corner of our lives waiting to jump out and rob us of our joy. And heartbreak does not just happen to the bad people of the world, good people like you and me seem to experience heartbreak as much or more than those people who we think deserve to feel it. How to we handle heartbreak, where do we find help for it? When I did not make the baseball team I could have handled the situation in one of two ways, a way that was positive, or a way that was negative. I could have indulged myself in destructive things like getting high, or getting drunk somewhere or I could use this heartbreak to make me a better person. But how is this done, how do we handle heartbreak in a way that makes us better people? If you would like the rest of this week’s message please request it at: revelations_75044@msn.com

A Hospital for the Future New 3.0 Parkland Hospital By: Bettye “Katt” Williams ELITE nEWS STAFF WRITER
I
was fortunate enough on last week to attend a media luncheon to get a sneak preview of the new Parkland Hospital and its state-of-the- art capabilities and how it will better serve patients and the community. David Krause, President and CEO for Parkland Foundation opened the luncheon and welcomed everyone and showed us a glimpse of how tall the new Parkland will be, than he turned it over to Dr. Ron Anderson, President and CEO for Parkland Health and Hospital System. Mr. Anderson explained why we needed to build the new Parkland and how the new facility will accommodate today’s needs as well as the future needs. Walter Jones, Senior Vice President of Facilities gave a presentation about ways that the new hospital will allow Parkland to be more effective to serve patients and their families. The new Parkland Hospital, a $1.27 billion project, will replace the existing 55year-old facility; nearly 2 million-squarefeet (almost the size of the new Texas Stadium), 862 beds, outpatient center (380,000 square feet), a separate clinic building, parking structures for 6,000 vehicles, central utility plant, logistics building, 96 nICU beds, 108 Emergency rooms, 48 Labor and Delivery rooms, 27 Operating Rooms, and other support facilities when complete in 2014. The new Parkland will be the largest public hospital building in the nation built in one phase. Parkland Memorial Hospital is the public hospital for Dallas County. The original facility opened in 1894, with the current facility opening in 1954. Today, Parkland Health & Hospital System operates a 672bed hospital, 11 primary care clinics and many outreach and educational programs. Parkland was the first Level I trauma center in Texas and is one of the busiest ERs in the country. If you ever had to visit Parkland’s emergency room and had to sit
S
for hours waiting to see a doctor, then you will really appreciate the new Parkland having more doctors and rooms in the ER with less wait time. Parkland has the second largest civilian burn unit in the U.S. and a Level III neonatal Intensive Care Unit. no one knows what the future holds, but we all know we want good public health care and Parkland is a hospital who can redefine public health care. Parkland is also the designated hospital of Ebola and for the President of the United States when they come to town, and is disaster prepared. Parkland also serves as a medical facility for the Dallas County Jail. With 82 percent voter approval in november 2008, the new hospital is scheduled to be completed in 2014 and is the largest hospital construction project in America and is on track since ground was broken on the new Parkland Memorial Hospital, and under budget. After the presentation, the question was asked, “What will happen to the old building when the new Parkland opens in 2014?” Dr. Ron Anderson answered and said that part is still in discussion but he would like to see it become a Mental Health facility that would be closer than Terrell, Texas for patients who are not as severe, and to have a faculty close to their families here in Dallas. Parkland is a training hospital for 55 per-

Advanced Placement Programs and Magnet Schools Highlighting Student Success in Dallas ISD
A
t Dallas ISD, every effort is focused on preparing students for success. We define success lew Blackburn as all students graduating with a high Dallas iSD school diploma, and the necessary Trustee District 5 skills to attend and graduate from college, or to pursue other career options. We know that a high school diploma can make a substantial difference in the quality of life of our graduates and their families. According to a 2002 study by the U.S. Census Bureau, the average yearly salary for someone with a high school diploma is almost twice as much as that of someone who did not graduate high school. And the average yearly salary of a person with a college degree is almost twice as much as the yearly salary for someone who did not attend college. One of the indicators of the district’s progress in preparing students for success is the number of students who are taking and passing Advanced Placement courses and exams. These courses challenge students to focus on various subjects at an advanced level and allow students to sit for AP exams. If students pass the exams with a scored a three or above, they for college credit. Based on 2011 results of 2,000 AP exams, Dallas ISD students received college credit. And in 2011, Dallas ISD students took 8,895 AP exams, compared to 1,229 in 1996. That’s great! Students who take the more rigorous AP classes and then take the exams increase their chances for scholarships, are better prepared to face the rigors of college, and are more
likely to graduate from college in four years. Preparing students for success also means exposing them to career choices. Dallas ISD offers students a variety of opportunities to explore various careers, including career pathways that engage students in exploring various professions. That’s wonderful! In the district’s magnet program, students can sample special areas of interest. This program consists of 10 magnet high schools, four satellite magnets, seven middle school academies, and four elementary vanguards. Requirements for admission vary by magnet school, and the application process is competitive due to the limited number of students accepted each year. The district’s Magnet Fair will be held 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, December 3 at Skyline High School, 7777 Forney Road and will feature exhibits and information for parents and students about each magnet school. Parents can receive applications, information about the application process, program requirements, the student selection timeline and the dates each school will host an open house. Bring a student! Beginning Monday, December 5, the 2012-2013 magnet school application will be available at all campuses and on the district web site. now, for District 5 news, schools celebrated many accomplishments over the last month. Samuel Ryan and Patricia Crisp, from the Department of Education’s Office of Communications and Outreach visited the repurposed A. Maceo Smith new Tech High to engage students in President Obama’s 2020 goal of increasing the graduation rate from 40 to 60 percent. The renovated Wilmer-Hutchins High was dedicat-
ed in the presence of Dallas city officials such as Tennell Atkins, Deputy Mayor Pro-Tem, and Mayor Artis Johnson of Hutchins, along with students, parents, staff, alumni, and community members. More than 400 students attended the October 22 District 5 Academic Pep Rally celebrating academic excellence, and community health fair co-sponsored by the Alpha Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. District 5 sixth through 12 graders and their parents participated in the October 29 Las Llaves Del Exito College Fair to learn more about going to college.C.F. Carr Elementary was selected by Texas Rangers Michael young to receive a $5,000 grant for technology from the Major League Baseball Players Trust and by T-Mobile for a campus makeover completed by 175 TMobile employees.Health Professions High Jessica nguyen returned as a cast member for the 2011-2012 student-hosted television programs School Zone Dallas. Carver and Earhart learning centers were chosen by the Tzu Chi Foundation to receive generous donations of uniform tops and blankets for their families. As we enter the holiday season, we have many reasons to be thankful. Let’s remember to express that gratitude at every opportunity. One way to express your gratitude is to volunteer; mentor or tutor a student. Contact the school near you on how to begin. I am available to meet with your organization to discuss the many successes with Dallas ISD in general and District 5 in particular. Contact my office at 972-925-3718 to schedule the meeting.

THE MOST I M P O RTA N T PURSUIT IN LIFE IS THE PURSUIT OF THE TRUTH JOHN 8:32
he bible was written to Christians or believers in the Lord Jesus the Christ. The bible was not written to, or for sinners, because the bible is of God. The bible is the written revelation of God to mankind. He gave it to us so, that we might know whom He is, what He is like and how to walk in fellowship with Him. All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Tim 3:16-17) Above all you must understand that no prophecy of scripture came about by the prophets own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were inspired by the Holy Spirit (2Pet. 1:20-21). THE InTEGRITy OF GOD”S WORD: Down through history people have tried to destroy God’s word because they did not like it’s message, but God has preserved it so future generations could read it for themselves. STUDyInG GOD”S WORD: Because the bible is God’s word, He expects us to read and study it for ourselves. And He promises to help us understand it. The Lord says meditate on His word day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. (Joshua 1:8) The true basic story of the bible is about a loving creator God who desires fellowship with us. He makes this possible through the innocent sacrifice of Jesus Christ for our sins. When we commit our lives to Jesus Christ, we enter into a covenant with God with the promise of eternal life with Him. now, if you are not of God you will never fully understand the bible. If you are not of God you cannot understand it, because you do not have the aid of the Holy Spirit to help you. (Regeneration-JustificationSanctification-Glorification) When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, He sends His Holy Spirit to live in us. The Holy Spirit joins our own human spirit to
For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years, doing the best they knew how. But God’s discipline is always good for us, so that we might share in his holiness. Hebrews 12:10 www.dfwelitenews.com
God and bears witness to it that you have become a child of God. Roman 8:15-16 says: For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the spirit of adoption, whereby we cry abba Father. The witness of the Spirit is the inner assurance of God’s truth. One of the conditions of this inner conviction concerning the things of God is obedience to His known will (Jm 7:17). God uses this ministry of the Holy Spirit to convince us of TRUTH that cannot be understood other than through divine help (Matt 16:16-17) The word truth is used in scripture in two ways: truth as contrasted with false; and genuine truth as contrasted with unreal. Although both apply to God, when we speak of the truth of God, normally His genuineness is contrasted with false gods of other religions. The scripture in this sense declare Him the only true God (John 17:3). When Elijah confronted the prophets of Baal on Mt. Carmel he challenged them to evaluate the genuineness of the Lord and of Baal (1 Kings 18:21). The true God answered by fire. Because the Lord is God. We are obligated to Him in all He demands. “you shall know the truth and the truth will make you free. There are many incidents in the bible where God has shown man through types of bondage. And freedom in order to show mankind the real truth. Israel in Egypt – Peter in jail – Paul/Silas in a Phillippian jail. One day the truth wrapped it’s self up with the flesh and blood of Jesus Christ, and came down through 42 generations to save a; mankind from the penalty of sin. All accepted the truth in Jesus the Christ were saved. So, we see the most important pursuit in life is the pursuit of the truth in Jesus the Christ. Who is the only one who can set you free and take you out of bondage within yourself. Any man who does not know Jesus the Christ is in bondage, but when one pursues Christ, he presses the genuine truth. Let us not forget to read our Bibles. May God bless you REAL GOOD may He ever keep you in His loving care.Mark 16:15

One Flesh
A
s God watched man go about his work, He saw that something was not right. Some have suggested that man looked a little sad; others have joked that man was making a big mess and kept wandering around, lost and confused. Whatever the cause, God looked at Geraldine His latest creation and Davidson-Hooker said: Genesis 2:18 "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." Adam needed more than someone to help him with his chores; he needed someone to make him complete! So God formed woman, not from the ground but from a rib taken from Adam's side; "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh" (Genesis 2:23). If God gives us someone as a special gift to make us whole, they ought to be cherished and protected for a lifetime; "For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh" (Genesis 2:24). Like pieces of a puzzle that fit neatly together, a Godordained marriage joins and completes by making two become one. It's sad how quickly we forget these basic truths. We continue to place our individual desires ahead of the union created by God. We "toy" with temptations without regard to the potential devastation. The result is often a civil war with years of spiritual bloodshed and an eventual ripping apart of what God has joined. We must stop this downward spiral before it even begins. To the MAny singles, I pray that God would give you encouragement and strength; I pray He would be the true Helper I know you desperately need. To those who are married or planning to marry, I pray we would now and forevermore see our spouse as a true gift from God given to make us whole. I pray we would forever thank Him for joining us together and commit to the protection of the union. I pray we would always remember that when God provides our most suitable helper (and completer), the two become one flesh.

ur church school lesson was “Forgiving as God’s people” Matt.5:17-26. Jesus purpose for coming into the world was to fulfill the law and Eld lloyd T. Morgan establish God’s Kingdom. That meant living a God fearing life marked by obedience, self denial, and love. Before dying, Jesus declared, “it is finished”. Jesus had finished the work of fulfilling the Law, but not in the ways people expected. For example the scribes were outraged when Jesus told a sick man, “Take heart son; your sins are forgiven. “ Knowing the bystanders emerging criticism, Jesus queried, “is it easier to say, your sins are forgiven’ or get up and walk”? I will prove that I the son of Man have the authority on earth to forgive sins” Jesus then turned to the man “Stand up take up your mat and go home! The law Exacted punishment for sin it also provided a system of sacri-
fices for unintentional and intentional sin, the sacrifice of animals, however, could not completely atone for sin and only foreshadowed the atonement of Jesus Christ. For Jesus the fulfilling of the law meant becoming the sacrificial Lamb slain for humankind’s sins. He died for our sins, just as God the father planned, in order to rescue us from this evil world we live in. because he was so forgiving we too must seek to pattern our lives after him by being willing to forgive one another. As believers we must realize that forgiveness is more liberating for the forgiver than the forgiven. Our Sunday message was delivered by Rev. Elvis Edwards of Galilee missionary Baptist church where the Rev. L.R.Davis is the pastor. He took his text from Ps.100 and quickly encouraged us to come into the house of God with a joyous song in our heart, not one of about the blues. How can you sat in the presence of God with a nasty attitude, God only radiate Joy, we should sing joyous songs, songs of praise to him. Be Blessed

opefully I have made it crystal clear that there are hindrances to effective prayer that become roadblocks as we enter into our place of prayer. There is one in particular that I failed Pastor Clarence Henderson to mention, and that is we fail to make prayer a first order of business. If prayer is not very high upon our day’s agenda and if we are extremely busy we may not get around to it at all. If we do not make prayer a matter of extreme importance our spiritual life will have no force. We need to think of the world as God’s workshop and each act of the day’s business as sacra, and everything we do should be as unto the Lord.

’ve had a big issue with the nCAA for years. I’ve always thought that it was set up by people that were only concerned with exploiting young men, and leon Simon in a few cases young women. not very often do they exploit the young ladies. In light of what’s at PEnn State University, I’m amazed at how ineffective a governing body can be. not just any governing body I’m talking about a governing body that put in a system that instantly took some young men out of Ohio State University. Some young men that fell on hard time s or was just greedy. But they sold some rings and personal memorabilia, some things that was awarded to them for their play. The nCAA found something wrong with that and suspended all of them.
page 8
Eventually yet reluctantly got a coach fire RELUCTAnTLy. They almost let the coach and the school issues their own punishment, but they made sure those young paid dearly for their questionable transgressions. They always seem as if they are really trying to clean up amateur sports, when my thoughts are they only want to keep the free labor in check. you can tell when the rules are skewed to affect only the student athlete. In all of the disciplinary action, substitute girl for boy and you can see how one sided their enforcements are. Tell me what would be the consequence had a Coach walked in on another coach raping a 10 year old girl. Are you naïve enough to think no one would be in jail? This supposedly started in 1998. 13 years ago, it’s not like they don’t have a suspect they know who did it. They know all parties involved. They know everyone‘s involvement the only thing that’s unknown about this is what’s going to be done about it. Can you see that happening at Texas Southern 13

years ago and the perpetrator still coming on campus with little girls? Still using work out facilities. Dez Bryant lost his last year of eligibility for having breakfast with Deion Sanders. The University of Houston almost got in trouble, because Carl Lewis and then recruit Joe Deloach went to Sunday school together. The nCAA said that was a recruiting violation. These are the same people that’s standing by and letting Penn State work this thing out. There is nothing that goes on at PEnn STATE that Joe Paterno doesn’t know about. There is no arrest made to athletes that doesn’t get reported to Joe Paterno. not just Penn State all college towns everything that happen to athletes are reported to head coach. If this doesn’t get Penn State a major violation death penalty type, the federal government needs to investigate this. Rape is a crime regardless the victim boy are girl.

Millionaire and Billionaires fighting over money Will there be a NBA Season this year? By: Bettye “Katt” Williams ELITE nEWS STAFF WRITER
S
ay it isn’t so Joe! The nBA Commission says that we may not have an nBA season this year. no Dirk? I finally found a sport that I like weather I’m there at a basketball game or watching in on TV, and now it is supposed to just stop? Have this ever happened before, a professional league canceling a whole season because of money negotiations? Why was the pay deal refused and what happens next? Why have basketball's stars rejected a pay deal, dissolved their union and extended the lockout? Why have nBA stars been locked out? Why have they rejected the latest pay deal? Why has the basketball players union been dissolved? Many basketball fans want to know these questions. The players have disclaimed their union — effectively ending its right to negotiate on their behalf and basketball's labor conflict will move from hotel rooms to courtrooms, putting the 2011-12 season in serious jeopardy. It has been said that this is the fourth in league history that started on July 1, 2011, without a collective bargaining agreement with the players; the nBA would be subject to America's antitrust laws, which protect against monopolies. For a long time the expiration of the CBA, the owners and the players' union attempted to negotiate a new deal in order to avoid a strike. When the two sides failed to reach an agreement by June 30, the owners declared a lockout and the brinksmanship began. Most of the owners claim that they are losing money. When the labor negotiations began, nBA commissioner David Stern said that 22 of the league's 30 teams expected to lose a combined $340 million this season. So millionaires and billionaires are losing money? Does that mean they will lose players like Kobe Bryant, Lamar
Odom, and Dirk nowitzki, to make room in their budget? naturally, the players are vehemently opposed to a hard cap and are concerned but say this is the owners' problem, not theirs they said. The players, in return, want to keep the current system in place — the so-called "soft cap" — which imposes a "luxury tax" on a team if its total salary exceeds a certain amount. (And there are always ways around that amount.) The luxury tax is then shared with the other teams that didn't overspend. This is seemingly the heart of the nBA lockout. Under the collective bargaining agreement that expired in June, the players received 57% of basketball-related income (BRI) —
ticket sales, TV contracts, concessions, etc. — while the owners received 43%. When the negotiating began, the players agreed to split BRI 53-47. They later dropped that figure to 52.5%, but the owners have been adamant in achieving a 50-50 split. The players have been united in rejecting such a proposal. The owners are asking for 50/50 spilt, but some players say it’s a 46 or 47/50+ split. In the most recent proposal from the owners, they sought a 50-50 division of BRI and a 72-game season beginning on December 15. But the players said no deal. On Tuesday, it was supposed to be the nBA players first pay day. Wouldn’t you be mad if you missed your money?
Representatives from neither the players nor the owners' sides are get much love from our panel.

uncanville Panthers observed Trinity’s football squad thwart Duncanville by a count of 55-36. Trinity appeared on the verge of taking control in the first half before a 14-play, 69-yard scoring drive pulled Duncanville within 27-21 at halftime. Duncanville senior quarterback Deandre Grimes (Deandre Grimes - 12-19 166 yds 4 TDS, 18 carries for 245 2 TDS) scored on a 1-yarder keep, but it was Duncanville’s ability to run off-tackle with Jaquan Cole that energized the drive. Cole had 111 yards rushing with two touchdowns at halftime. Duncanville’s only other one-play spark was a 75-yard touchdown catch by senior Malcolm McKenney. Trinity jumped in front behind Kimpela. The 5-10, 185-pound senior had 121 yards rushing in the first half with two touchdowns; including a 45-yard scoring run that gave Trinity a 27-14 lead. ing. The loose ball was recovered by DeSoto in the end zone, giving Longview a safety, the winning points as Longview upset DeSoto 23-21, before 10,000 spectators at Lobo Stadium. Longview (9-1, 5-0) ranked no. 8 in the Associated Press’ Class 5A state poll, wins the District 11-5A title, capturing a district crown for the eighth consecutive year. DeSoto (9-1, 4-1) ranked no. 3, suffered its first loss. DeSoto running back Devin Rushing opened the scoring with a 53-yard touchdown run with 10:42 left in the first quarter on a fourth-and-1 play. White had 162 total yards of offense. DeSoto failed to score points twice in Longview’s red zone, with Echols missing a 40-yard field goal to close the first half and a bad snap leading to a recovery by Longview’s Corey Bartley at Longview’s 6-yard line with 5:41 remaining, preserving a 21-14 lead. Hurst L.D. Bell 13-10 in a Class 5A Division I Region I bi-district game at Pennington Field. Cedar Hill (8-3), “Duncanville just flat-out embarrassed us last week, and there was a lot of talk about that this week,” said McGuire, whose team was coming off a 56-55 overtime loss. Bell (6-5) drove for its first positive yards of the game on its next possession, scoring on a 1-yard sneak by quarterback Kyle Romano to get back in the game. The score came two plays after Cedar Hill celebrated an apparent Bell fumble, only for officials to rule that Bell had maintained possession. Bell was coming off a bye last week and had an extra week to prepare for Cedar Hill. Lincoln Tigers denies Seagoville its first playoff wins since 1995. Outgained 317-156 by Seagoville in their Class 4A-II Region II bi-district game and held without a third-down conversion; Lincoln trailed by 21 points early in the second quarter.

Harlem, new york born native, who is a Cuban American former East Texas State track star, a field athlete, a professional football player, and an Olympic bronze medalist has returned to Commerce to hold a discussion and book signing for his new book, The John Carlos Story: The Sports Moment That Changed the World. “John Carlos was a gifted athlete and outstanding student who went on to study at East Texas State University on a full track-and-field scholarship that made history on the track and in the broader arena of social justice,” said A&M University-Commerce President Dr. Dan Jones. “We welcome him back to the university and community where he spent a formative time of his life.” Most of us are aware of or have heard about the protestors in Dallas and surrounding cities and states. Carlos told Occupy Wall Street protestors that “I am here for you, why? Because I am you. We are here 43 years later because the fight is still to be won. We must never stop, for this day is not for us, but it’s for our children.” Added Carlos, in comments reported by the new york Daily news: “Society is broke and these people are here to say, ‘We need to fix it.’”
page 10
Carlos competed for East Texas State as a freshman in 1966-67, winning both the 100 and 200meter dashes and was a member of the 4×400-meter relay team as the Lions captured the 1967 Lone Star Conference Championship. Carlos then transferred to San Jose State University. In the 1968 Summer Olympics, running the 200 meters, Carlos threw up his black power on the podium with Tommie Smith that caused a political controversy. After his track career, he enjoyed brief stints in the nFL and Canadian Football League but retired due to injury. He became involved with the Olympic Committee, he is an author, became a track coach, and he was inducted into the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame in 2003. Carlos would go on to tie the world record in the 100-yard dash in 1969, while helping San Jose State to the nCAA title. He would play briefly in the national Football and Canadian Football leagues before a knee injury cut his career short. “We are so excited to have John Carlos back on campus at the place where his track career truly began,” said Athletic Director Carlton Cooper. “This will be a great experience for the A&MCommerce student body, our student-athletes, and the Commerce community to have a chance to meet someone who has championed his life fighting for human rights.” John Carlos returns to East Texas State

Omini Hotel is Dallas’ Newest Convention Center Hotel By: Bettye “Katt” Williams ELITE nEWS WRITER
I
f you have driven anywhere close to downtown Dallas lately, there was no way you could have missed the beautiful new illuminated building that lights the sky at night. I’m talking about the new supersized Omni Hotel connected to the Dallas Convention Center, located at 555 Lamar Street, downtown Dallas. Lights covering the entire building change colors and make patterns. On Friday, the Omni Dallas Hotel opened the 23 story hotel with 1,001 rooms, 110,000 square feet of meeting and event space, and 7,000 original pieces of art from 150 local artists. The building connects to the Dallas Convention Center via a sky bridge. Guests can choose from several dining options including Bob’s Steak & Chop House (a Dallas institution) and Texas Spice (a casual farm-to-market eatery). There’s also Mokara Spa and the Uptown Terrace, which has a pool with a view of the skyline. The project has been in the works for years. nils Stolzlechner will lead the Omni Dallas Hotel as general manager, reporting to Ed netzhammer, the managing director of the hotel and a regional vice president of operations for the brand. This will be a Four Diamond
Hotel which is not indicative of what you would traditionally see with convention center hotels,” said Omni Corporate Communications Director Caryn Kboudi. Owned by the City of Dallas, city officials are hoping the hotel will help revitalize the city and draw big conventions. Things are looking promising so far. Two years in the making, the hotel actually opened early and under budget. It has already contracted nearly 300,000 room nights, according to an Omni press release. “As we open the doors to the Omni Dallas Hotel today, we can confidently say Dallas is again competitive,” Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said in the press statement. “We have reinvigorated our world-class reputation in the large meetings and convention industry.” “It’s been 30 years in the making,” said Phillip Jones, president of the Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau. “It is something that really puts us on the map once again as one of the top meeting and convention destinations in the country.” Jones says this is already a game changer and will bring millions of dollars to the city. According to the Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau, in the 24 months before the voters approved building the hotel, 18 citywide conventions came to Dallas, with an economic impact of some $488 million. In the 24 months following the hotel’s approval, that number has more than tripled – booking 55 citywide conventions with an economic impact of over $1.2 bil-

Unpleasant Circumstance Yields LifeAffirming Art: How the Death of A Loved One Paved the way for A New Skill By: Callandra Smith SPECIAL TO ELITE nEWS

ollowing the sudden death of her uncle, Callandra Smith, a Dallas native, learned how unpleasCallandra Smith ant circumstances such as death can be a wellspring of life-affirming art. In late spring of 2007, Smith’s uncle, Dr. Cleophas Barnett, a well-known and respected physician in Compton, California, passed away suddenly. "I stayed with my cousin during the week of the funeral,” she says. “I was to occupy my time by working on an art project she set aside for me while she worked during the day. Little did I know my time with her would be the catalyst for life to come from a sad situation.” The art project - mosaics - proved to be therapeutic and a real stress-reliever for Smith. Upon returning to Dallas, she found herself engrossed in this new-found art form and creating a variety of items that were appealing to family and friends.
Many expressed how relaxing, soothing, and aesthetically pleasing they found her art. While others were intrigued by the uniqueness of each piece. Smith soon received offers for her work. Pieces were purchased for personal use as well as for gifts. Smith says that she’s grateful that others find her work to be inspiring. "As a child, I always wanted to be a teacher and a doctor. I have always wanted people to feel better when leaving my presence than when they entered," she says. She sees her art as a way of fulfilling her purpose in life - empowering, restoring, and uplifting others. “To hear that people are experiencing peacefulness from my pieces and to know that I experience the same while creating them is amazing,” Smith says. “Knowing that my work helps to uplift others makes me feel like I am doing something toward fulfilling my purpose.” For more information about Smith’s mission and her art, visit her website at www.pureblisscollection
