John 3:16-18 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but Henry Nelson to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.” How do you explain the meaning of Christmas in just a few words? Well the best way I know is this:“For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Amen! No one could outdo what God has done. No one could give a greater gift than God has already given. I would like for us to consider the meaning of Christmas this weekwhat it should mean to each and every one of us today.

Christmas Is

C

hristmas means a lot of things to a lot of different people. To some it is-a time of shopping and spending a time of drinking and carousing; a time of traveling and entertaining but, what is the real meaning of Christmas? What message should it convey to every one of us?

To me, Christmas is; A TIME OF REMEMBERING. Remembering the great love that God had for each and every one of us. He loved us so much that He spared not His only Son that we might be saved. Remembering the uniqueness of His life, His teachings, His miracles, His prophesies, His death, His resurrection, remembering all those humble but great people surrounding the Christmas story people like Joseph and Mary, Zacharias and Elizabeth, Anna, Simeon, the shepherds, the wise men, and etc. A TIME OF LOVING People make a special effort to be a little kinder, a little more considerate of others, and a little more generous during the Christmas season. They get involved in such things as Christmas caroling, toys for the needy, for the misfortunate, etc. It is a time for reaching out

. A TIME OF RESCUING God rescued us by His love and mercy. He saved us from perishing. Without Christ we are without life, and headed for an eternity without God-forever separated from the God who made us and longs to save us. He wants us to inherit eternal life. We are all descendents of a dying race. But for the grace of God, we would all likewise perish. A TIME OF CHANGING The Christ of Christmas changes us. He makes us new creatures. All things become new forus. We have new goals, new ideas, new direction, and new hope. Christ changes people for the better. A TIME OF REJOICING Rejoicing in God’s unmerited grace; Rejoicing in the release of forgiveness; Rejoicing in a new life with a new mission. I have tried to share with you this week what Christmas means to me. What does the coming of Christ into this world mean to you? Have you received Him as Lord and Savior? If not, I encourage you to come to Him now. Now you know what Christmas should be. Amen!

to others with love and concern. God so loved the world-let us never forget that!!! In all of our preaching, teaching, evangelizing, etc. let us always remember that the motivation for all this is the love of God for lost sinners. He really cares about us. So should we care as He cares? So should we love, as He loves? . A TIME OF GIVING For God so loved the world that He gave. Love cannot look with indifference on the hungry, and the sick, and the lonely, lost souls of this world. Love must give. God gave all He could give. He gave His only begotten Son. This gift was freely given, lovingly given, graciously given to all of us, who were undeserving sinners. Christ shared our human nature that we might receive His divine nature. Day by day, those who receive Him are being transformed into His image, until we all come into the fullstature of the perfected children of God, washed in the blood of the Lamb. A TIME OF FORGIVING God was willing to forgive us. He was willing to show mercy to a sinful, lost, and dying world. Do we possess His forgiving spirit? Or, is your spirit a judgmental one that looks down upon others? Is there someone you need to forgive today?

Recipe of The Week Mini Christmas Tree Pizzas Ingredients: English muffin 1/3 cup Marinara sauce 2 slices of mozzarella cheese, sliced as broadly as possible and about 1/4-inch thick Chopped olives Make It:

Jordan Blair II

Preheat your oven’s broiler. Cut the English muffin in half, if necessary, and toast it in a toaster on a medium-low setting. Place the two toasted English muffin halves on a baking sheet. Spread the marinara sauce on each muffin. Cut your cheese slices with a tree-shaped cookie cutter or a cookie cutter of your choice. Place the cheese shape on top of the marinara sauce. Sprinkle the chopped olives on top of the cheese tree, as if they are ornaments. Place the baking sheet in the oven under

the broiler. Broil for just a few minutes, watching carefully. You don’t want the cheese to become so melted you don’t recognize the tree shape. Allow to cool slightly and serve.

ESTABLISHED IN 1960

“My Love For Christmas” By: Bettye “Katt” Williams ELITE NEWS STAFF WRITER

N

ow you have read my Thanksgiving story about how thankful I was of my life and how I spent many Thanksgivings alone, but after all that loneliness, Christmas is my season to give to others and just feel the spirit of Christmas throughout the world. No matter if I end up spending Christmas alone, I never feel alone as I do other holidays. To me, Christmas is the only holiday that can lift my spirits and make me feel happy because not only do I get the joy of seeing how Christmas affects not only children but others who receive Christmas. Just knowing there was a birth of a man name Jesus. Jesus was God’s manifestation of love. “For God so loved the world.” (John 3:16). We often say to people that God loves you....and this is the proof. It does not say God loved a few special people, or just those who believe in Him, but He loved the whole world. That includes everyone here, in this nation and around the world, and with knowing that, I know He loves me. Christmas is my time of the year to feel loved. Not for gifts that I may or may not get, but for love I feel down inside for myself. God reminds me in my heart I am loved. When my children were born, my face would light up to see their face on Christmas morning, then years later, to see my grandson’s face light up the same way my children did when they were younger. Regardless of whether it was my kids, my grandson, or other family and friends react to gifts and gatherings; each of those moments reminded me I was loved as well. Christmas has a soft spot in my heart each year, whether I was broke as a door nail and couldn’t give gifts like I would want to my family and friends or if I had worked some extra hours at work to give to others to see them smile, I knew Christmas would make me feel a lot better about myself and feel a joy in my heart that can’t be taken away by anyone. Christmas seasons in my youth were spent in Mansfield, TX at my childhood church (Mt. Olive Baptist Church-Arlington, TX). Christmas was celebrated during Sunday morning services, at Sunday School Christmas programs where I would offer recitations with the youth of the church and in celebrations by church choirs and auxiliaries. Church was instrumental in fostering a healthy spiritual perspective on the holiday.

S

There was no question in our house or in our church that Jesus was the reason for the season. On Christmas Day, my foster parents would awaken me at pre-dawn so that we could see what Santa brought under the tree. I had to make Christmas breakfast: homemade biscuits, freshly ground sausage and eggs from the farm. Yes, I was a farm girl! After eating our fill Christmas morning, it was time to get dressed for Christmas visits with other relatives, friends, aunts, uncles, cousins, much food, and an annual viewing of my DVD of “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” perhaps my favorite holiday fable. My grandmother, who was affectionately called “Big Mama,” who left me in 1987, would be in the kitchen, making it her Christmas mission to provide everyone their favorite dish. As she and I grew older, I tried to gently dissuade her from cooking my favorite dish so that she could rest and enjoy Christmas. Whenever I decide to cook like Big Mama, it always made it feel like Christmas. For some African Americans, Christmas starts on December 26th with the harvest time ritual known as Kwanzaa. The holiday originated in the 1960s, during the civil rights movement to commemorate African heritage of African Americans who use Swahili language. It lasts for a week. There are family gatherings, gifts are exchanged and a series of black, red and green candles are lit to symbolize the seven basic values defined for the African Americans family life - Collective work and responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Creativity, Faith, Purpose, Self-determination, and Unity. By now you can tell that Christmas is my Holiday of choice, it’s my time to feel loved, it’s

My Version of “The Hood Christmas Story” A sister named Mary was to be married to a brother whose name was Joseph. It was Joseph, you see, who was a descendant of Abraham. It turned out that Mary was already pregnant, and Joseph wasn’t happy about it—especially since the child wasn’t his. But Joseph was a pretty cool brother. Although he coulda dissed the sister big time and had her sent away, he decided that Mary was an all right sister (although she did have a big problem). For her sake, he decided that he wasn’t gonna tell everybody her business. So while he sat and thought about how he would send Mary away without everybody knowin what was happenin’, an angel of the Almighty stood before him. “Brother Man, don’t do this thing you’re thinking. Believe me when I tell you, the kid Mary is carrying is a holy kid. Just like a brother named Isaiah said a long time ago, ‘A virgin will get pregnant, though not by any brother, and when the kid is born his name shall be called Immanuel,’ which is the name of the Almighty Hisself!” And Joseph went, “That’s pretty hip.” Without another word, he married the sister, Mary, and when the kid was born they called the little brother Jesus.

peRspecTive iN The black cOmmuNiTy Dallas Resident John Darjean Named Allstate Give Back Day Hero Community heroes, Rodney Peete kick off Allstate’s National “Give Back Day” in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr .

Special to Elite News

A

llstate Insurance Company announced that John Darjean of Dallas has been named a 2012 Allstate Give Back Day Hero. For the fourth consecutive year, Allstate is paying tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., by encouraging individuals to volunteer in their communities on MLK Day 2012 (Jan. 16) through its Give Back Day program (allstate.com/givebackday). Rodney Peete, former NFL quarterback and co-founder of the HollyRod Foundation, is helping launch the 2012 program along with Darjean and three other outstanding community heroes who are recognized as leading volunteers in their communities. Peete and the four Heroes will be guiding Give Back Day activities in their home cities with Allstate. “John Darjean is a remarkable individual who selflessly gives back, keeping Dr. King’s legacy alive through his passionate commitment to service,” said Joseph McCormick, field corporate relations manager for Allstate’s Texas Region. “The volunteer efforts of the Give Back Day Heroes reflect the values and causes important to Allstate and communities across America. We hope their stories inspire others to put their good hands to work in their own communities every day and on Jan. 16, in honor of

Dr. King.” John Darjean has served as a mentor and coach for the past ten years, teaching inner-city youth the fundamental of baseball in an effort to keep them off the streets and out of trouble. Darjean grew up in a rough neighborhood and struggled in school but baseball was the one thing that was able to keep him out of trouble. After four years playing minor league baseball for the New York Yankees, Darjean started Majors 2 Minors, a baseball league for inner-city kids. He co-founded the Dallas Baseball Alliance, a program aimed at coaching kids the fundamentals of baseball, while using the sport as a vessel to teach them discipline and life skills. A lifelong volunteer with the Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation, having endured sickle cell traits since birth, Darjean also volunteers with Dallas Police Athletic League, the American Cancer Society. Darjean played the role of shortstop in the movie “For The Love of the Game” and he is currently making an independent film about African Americans in baseball. In 2010, he was granted the NAACP Humanitarian Award for his extensive work in the Dallas community. Darjean joins Alexandria Phillips from Atlanta, Robert Cradle from Baltimore and Joyce Calvin from Chicago as this year’s class of 2012 Allstate Give Back Day Heroes. Each hero has helped create

positive, sustainable change in their communities by volunteering to address important causes like domestic violence, economic empowerment and mentoring at-risk youth. On behalf of Darjean, Allstate is making a donation of $2,500 to Dallas Baseball Alliance. Heroes will attend The King Center’s “Salute to Greatness” Awards in Atlanta on Jan. 14, 2012 for a celebration of individuals and organizations that exemplify excellence in leadership. In addition, Peete will be attending a special Allstate Give Back Day volunteer event in Atlanta on MLK Day 2012. “It is an honor for me to be associated with this committed and selfless group of heroes. I have always believed in getting involved in causes that you are passionate about, and it’s great to see these individuals mirroring the spirit of Dr. King by giving back,” said Peete, who spent 16 years in the NFL as a quarterback. Peete and wife Holly’s HollyRod Foundation, which helps those living with autism and Parkinson’s disease, is currently developing plans to open their first “HollyRod4kids Compassionate Care Center for Autism” in Los Angeles, a central location where families in the autism community can go for support, guidance, treatment and hope. Individuals interested in participating in Allstate Give Back Day 2012 can visit

allstate.com/GiveBackDay to find local volunteer opportunities via VolunteerMatch, an online search engine promoting volunteerism and civic engagement by matching volunteers with charitable organizations and non-profits. Visitors to the website can view profiles of the four Allstate Give Back Day Heroes and learn about their community involvement through a series of video interviews. In 2011, more than 1,500 Allstate employees, agency owners and community members volunteered in dozens of cities across the country on Give Back Day.

Those who are left will be the lowly and humble, for it is they who trust in the name of the Lord. Zephaniah3:12 NLT

The ones who will be left standing are the ones who will be found kneeling.

“The King of Christmas”

T

his is a very special time of year, Gene Turner which has a special kind of meaning to all mankind, or should I say it should be a very special time of year for all mankind. This time of year represents the embryonic stage of mankind’s redemption. Man was lost in sin and had no way of ever being redeemed, unless there was the shedding of blood, and the blood had to be worthy. For this reason Christmas is more than gold or glitter, it is more than the exchange and giving gifts. It is a season of the year when we should be thankful and grateful that we have a Savior who was born around this time of year who came into the world just at the right time to save us from our sins. Everybody gets all in the air around Christmas time, not because of the meaning of Christmas, but because of all the wine and dine atmosphere which surrounds Christmas. We have even allowed the meaning of Christmas to be discontinued in our public schools. The word Christmas is not to be attached to certain functions within the schools, because of the first part of the meaning of the word CHRIST. We are allowing to happen mentally what happened mentally and physically two thousand years ago. We need to teach our children that there is more to Christmas than toys, new clothes, wining and dining, and fun and games. “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call His name Jesus: for He shall save His people from their sins.” Now all that was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying “behold a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son,

and they shall call His name IMMANUAL, which being interpreted as, GOD WITH US”. (Matt.. 1:21,22 and 23) The name of the child Jesus in Hebrew “YEHOSHUA” means, “JEHOVAH SAVES.” This within itself proves the very purpose of Christ’s coming into the world to save sinners. This statement becomes the foundational concept of the GOSPEL. Jesus by His very name and nature, is the Savior. The statement,“That it might be fulfilled”. This phrase is a Greek phrase, (PLEROO) which indicated the inevitability of the fulfillment of the words of the prophet. If we look at the logic of this Scripture; it should make us want to cry. God loved us so, that He started making preparation to redeem man the same time He made Him. Isn’t that something? How many men would marry a woman for sure that she would be unfaithful to him? “There is no greater love that laying down your life that others might live.” This is why the man Jesus was born KING, and when we think about Christmas let us not forget why we have Christ in the first place. If you are able to read this article and you do not know who Jesus really is, then you should lift up your eyes to Heaven right now, and say I surrender my life to you right now, because Jesus is truly “ THE KING OF CHRISTMAS”.

TO ALL OF OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN CHRIST, WE WISH YOU A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS, AND A HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR, AND MAY GOD BLESS YOU REAL GOOD, AND MAY HE EVER KEEP YOU IN HIS LOVING CARE.

CWisdom of This World

T

here are many influences which compete for our attention; many different inputs which seek to shape our view of the world and, in turn, direct how we make decisions about our life. There is also an enemy who greatly desires to win this competition. The enemy is battling for the hearts of men, women and children; and he knows if he can win Geraldine the battle of the mind, the Davidson-Hooker heart will remain his. Many of the battle lines are easy to recognize. For example, the direct assault from various forms of sexual temptation and drugs claim numerous victims every day. But there are many other plans of the enemy which place hidden mine fields along the path and destroy those who are not careful where they step. Perhaps the best disguised and most effective weapon of the enemy is that of worldly wisdom. Since the Garden of Eden, the enemy has propagated a set of values which sound wise and appealing, but which consistently lead down a path of destruction. His "wisdom" attempts to define happiness and success - tells us we must achieve, push, and obtain in order to succeed and be fulfilled. But if we will come into the presence of God, we will see the world's wisdom for what it truly is...foolishness. The values of the world are continually promoted in every type of media and from every possible class of people - even sometimes from those who profess faith in Jesus. But these values are lies! They are weapons of the enemy used to pull us away from God...they are foolishness!! And when we choose to live as a captive to world values, we have chosen to live outside of God's perfect plan. God's plan will always require faith - always require us to be "sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see". This often means we must have the faith and courage to stand alone. Though the world may label us a "fool," we must continue (and continue some more) to "trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding". We are being called to become a fool to the world, but this is not an easy task. We have been well "educated" in the world system, and now must reshape the way we think; "be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Romans 12:2). This renewal process will take determined, consistent, and intentional prayer and the study of His Word; but God will provide sufficient strength for the process. Let's refuse to live in a cloud of deception. Let's make an uncompromising commitment to God and break free from the wisdom of the world.

Notes From Union Hope

he church school lesson was “The Lord Provides” Genesis 22:1-2, 6-14 . After being promised an heir at 75 years of age finally God gives Eld Lloyd T. Morgan him a son at the age of 100 and a wife 90 years of age. But after a few years God tells Abraham to take his son and offer him up to him as a sacrifice. God wanted to see if Abraham loved the son he had given him more than he loved him. God never want us to love the blessing more than the God who give the blessing. Of course God did not allow him to go through with it but provided a lamb. The Message was delivered by Pastor Lloyd Morgan from the subject “The day the creator came to visit His creation” St John 1:1-13. This being the season set aside to celebrate the Birth of the Christ child we were reminded that all things were made by Him and without him nothing

was made, and although He made it all the crown of his creation “man” did not receive him. The same spirit prevails today; society is trying to take Christ out of Christmas but you can’t have Christmas without “CHRIST”. The merchant man doesn’t want his employees to say merry Christmas but he use the day to improve his bottom line and if it was not Christmas all those shoppers would not be there. I hope every believer will put Christ in Christmas if no one else does. We congratulate Deacon Billy Johnson and Sis. Vickie Dean on their marriage which took place on Saturday November 17. Thank God for those that still does it the Biblical way, get married instead of playing house by “shacking”. We the members of Union Hope Primitive Baptist church wish all of the readers of the Elite news a very Christmas and a blessed New Year. Christmas is finally here, Let us go out and spread the cheer, Let us send out sincere wishes to all those we meet, May our hearts be filled with purity from underneath.Merry Xmas to you and your family.

T

he National Football League shows you its many personalities this weekend. I have said on many occasions that there are several Leon Simon teams that are identical to others. The Giants and the Cowboys for an example are the same team. If you paid attention the game they just played the both made the same identical mistakes. They both look like they can beat the world when they’re well, when they’re not you wonder what do they do all week at practice. The first half of the Tampa Bay game the Cowboys looked like they did in 1993, the second half they looked like a totally different team. The second half of last week’s game the Giants looked like they were ready to

page 8

make a run at the Super-bowl .against the Redskins they look like their twin, the Dallas Cowboys. They didn’t pull straws to have records similar to the Cowboys they’re the same team. One’s got a different coach and quarterback. No secondary, no linebackers, decent front 4, nothing spectacular. Justin Tuck (Giants) spends as much time on the side lines in crucial moments as DeMarcus Ware does for the Cowboys. Ware is sometimes compared to Lawrence Taylor, and I’m trying to figure how. They don’t play at all alike, Lawrence dominated every play. DeMarcus set his man up for one big rush. After he got that one big rush in Saturday he spent the rest of the afternoon standing on the side line with his helmet in his hand. The team says he’s got a stinger he says he’s ok! This is not just Cowboys; the league has a split personality. All year Green Bay has been bill as unbeatable, and Aaron Rogers could throw through the eye of a needle. Today I’m hearing Drew Brees could be the league’s MVP. Green Bay looked like The Rams. The Eagles look like the 85 bears. The Jets look like the Colts.

www.dfwelitenews.com

All you guys that had your Super- bowl picks ready take it easy and be careful. This thing hasn’t been settled. Aaron Rogers was thought to be having the best year ever by a quarterback, now today they’re saying Drew Brees could be the MVP. Would you believe if I Said the Packer may not go to the Super-bowl? Do not be surprised who you see in the Super-bowl. Really don’t be surprised who don’t make it. How about Houston - New Orleans. Anyone that’s got a shot can pull it off, all of these guys are professional keep an open mind, it’s a free movie set back and enjoy. This is truly a year where everybody has a chance Bengal, Texans, Cowboys, Charges, even Eagles. All of this sounds like a joke but don’t laugh until you see the first week in February. Not the last week in December.

Christmas Day Re-Match-Dallas Mavs vs. Miami Heat By: Bettye “Katt” Williams ELITE NEWS STAFF WRITER

B

y the time you are finished opening gifts, sipping a little coffee and smacking on that cinnamon roll on Christmas morning, you’ll be able to dive into another pile of gifts from the NBA. The NBA gift for Dallas Mavericks fans will be a re-match with the Miami Heat. A season ago, the Dallas Mavericks worked their way to the playoffs as one of the top teams in the Western Conference. Despite their regular season, the Mavs were dismissed by nearly everybody when they got to the playoffs. It started in the first round and carried over into the NBA Finals against the Miami Heat where the Mavs shocked the NBA World and brought an NBA Championship to Big D. Six months seems like a long time to wait for a loved one to return. But when we saw the Christmas Day lineup of NBA games that the schedule-making powers-that-be whipped up for us, it melted any lingering animosity we might have had about the 149-day lockout. Prior to raising the Championship banner on Christmas night, the Mavericks will have a new look roster in their pursuit of a repeat. A number of the key contributors are back. Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Terry, Jason Kidd, and Shawn Marion are back. Mavs also made some additions as well. The Mavericks brought in Vince Carter, Delonte West, and Lamar Odom to add a ton of depth to an already impressive roster, but the Mavericks had one huge loss. Dallas lost their lynchpin on defense. Tyson Chandler was one of the most underrated players in the NBA a year ago yet the Mavericks don’t win the title without him manning the middle and bringing a toughness and defensive mind-

set to Dallas. This season, the Mavs won’t be flying under the radar. The defending champs will have the bulls-eye on their back and their quest to repeat became more difficult this off season when Tyson Chandler went to the Knicks. Owner, Mark Cuban was asked why the roster changed so much after winning the championship. He answered and said “There is no simple answer other than to say the rules changed. The Collective Bargaining Agreement just changed completely. In the past, when you are a luxury tax team that just meant you paid money. There were no competitive limitations at all. That’s all out the window. Now, not only do you pay money and more money, but there’s a whole list of things that you’re

not able to do or limits on what you can do that change everything. We had to change the strategy.” Merry Christmas to the Dallas Mavericks on Christmas Day, and good luck from the Elite News Staff. Go Mavs!

CONGRESSWOMAN EDDIE BERNICE JOHNSON ISSUES STATEMENT ON THE MORATORIUM OF U.S. POSTAL SERVICE CLOSINGS, UNTIL MAY 15 Special to Elite News

C

ongresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson announced that there will be a moratorium on the closing or consolidation of post offices or mail processing facilities in North Texas. On Tuesday, fifteen U.S. Senators and the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) issued a moratorium on the closure of thousands of post offices throughout the country until May 15, 2012. The Postal Service would like to cut costs by consolidating about 3,700 post offices, end Saturday service, and eliminate first class overnight mail. “While I applaud members of the Senate and USPS leadership for reaching this agreement, I do have some longstanding concerns that I have been seeking resolution on since 2009 when the first Area Mail Processing (AMP) feasibility studies were being conducted. In a series of letters to USPS and meetings with the agency’s leadership, I have been very vocal in my opposition to closing or relocating these mailing centers in my congressional district. In an economy where unemployment runs high and social mobility runs low, there could not be a worse time to close thousands of retail branches and put even more hard working Americans out of work,” stated Congresswoman Johnson. Since 2009, Congresswoman Johnson has been actively fighting to ensure that Dallas residents, as well as the city’s large business community have access to adequate postal services. She understands that the USPS needs to cut costs to stay competitive, but wants to ensure cuts don’t hinder residents or their businesses. Congresswoman Johnson met with thousands of

constituents to gather public input on the best approach to keep post offices open. She has also kept in consistent contact with the Postmaster General on a host of issues related to access to services for the 30th Congressional District and North Texas. Congresswoman Johnson is a co-sponsor of H.R. 1351, the USPS Pension Obligation Recalculation and Restoration Act, a bipartisan piece of legislation to help the USPS recoup nearly $7 billion in overpayments to its pension fund. Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson Statement on On Tuesday, December 13, fifteen U.S. Senators in conjunction with Postal Service leadership announced a verbal agreement to halt any post office closures until May 15, 2012. This moratorium is intended to give Congress the time it needs to enact comprehensive postal reform without needlessly restructuring the agency at the cost of tens of thousands of jobs. This announcement comes at a time when USPS faces a projected $14.1 billion loss in fiscal 2012 and is evaluating the possibility of closing up to 3,700 local branches and 252 mail-processing facilities. One such facility and a number of retail branches throughout the 30th District of Texas stand to be affected by these proposed changes. While I applaud members of the Senate and USPS leadership for reaching this agreement, I do have some longstanding concerns that I have been seeking resolution on since 2009 when the first Area Mail Processing (AMP) feasibility studies were being conducted. In a series of letters to USPS and meetings with the agency’s leadership, I have been very vocal in my opposition to closing or relocating these mailing centers. In an economy

Ms. Bettye “Katt” Williams

A Christmas tradition gave slaves some relief from their oppressive conditions was the celebration of the Johnkankus (also called the Christmas Masquerade). This tradition, popular on the eastern coast of North Carolina and in other parts of the South, is considered by historians as one of, if not the earliest, African American Christmas traditions in the United States.

where unemployment runs high and social mobility runs low, there could not be a worse time to close thousands of retail branches and put even more hard working Americans out of work. This agreement to delay the closures is a positive sign that Congress and the USPS are able and willing to come to a viable solution in solving the agency’s financial woes. However, at my behest, we have seen such delays before in the 30th District and yet USPS has still not developed a comprehensive plan to streamline its operations and update the agency’s role in the 21st century. I have requested more transparency and availability for public input from the agency when conducting its feasibility studies, yet that has not happened in my opinion. I have met with USPS leadership to discuss the effects these closures would have on jobs for thousands of Americans, and yet their decisions have not reflected a serious consideration of those concerns. With this announcement, it remains apparent that the bulk of our work remains. I am eager to work with my colleagues in the Senate and USPS leadership in the coming months to find practical and cost-effective solutions to this very serious problem. Nobody is ignoring the fact that USPS mail volume has declined tremendously, however like any business the USPS must evolve with the ever-changing times and redefine itself in a dynamic and unpredictable economy. I have always and will continue to be willing to work with my colleagues to facilitate this change; however it is largely up to the USPS leadership to guide the agency into a prosperous future.

Mystery surrounds son set to succeed Kim Jong Il Special to Elite News

W

ith the sudden death of his father, Kim Jong Un went from being North Korea's "Respected General" to "Great Successor" — a heady and uncertain promotion for a young man virtually unknown even to the North Korean people just a year ago. Word of Kim Jong Il's death, announced Monday two days after he suffered a fatal heart attack, thrusts his 20-something son in the spotlight as the future head of a nation grappling with difficult nuclear negotiations and chronic food shortages. Within hours of breaking the news of his father's death, state media urged the nation's people to rally around Kim Jong Un and to "faithfully revere" their next leader. The son has not appeared publicly since the announcement of his father's death. The death speeds up a succession process that began in earnest a little more than a year ago — scant time to gain experience, build political clout and allay skepticism at home and abroad that he can lead a nation of 24 million. His father, by contrast, had 20 years of grooming before his father, North Korea founder Kim Il Sung, passed away in 1994. News of Kim's death shocked a nation largely kept in the dark about their leader's health even after he suffered a stroke in 2008. Abroad, there was widespread speculation throughout 2009 about who would succeed the iron-fisted ruler. Kim Jong Un's emergence in September 2010 as the anointed successor settled the question of which of Kim Jong Il's three known sons was chosen as the third-generation leader in a family dynasty that has ruled since North Korea's post-World War II inception in 1948. And his status as his father's anointed successor has become clear over the course of the past year.Af ter appointing him vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the ruling Workers' Party, Kim Jong Il unveiled the son to the world just weeks later at a massive military parade to celebrate a key party anniversary. With the world's media in attendance and transmitting live video, the young son appeared on the balcony of the Grand People's Study Hall in a blue suit, waving as tanks loaded with long-range missiles barreled by. Stocky and youthful, he bears more than a passing resemblance to his grandfather, Kim Il Sung, as a young man — a similarity that plays into the emphasis on lineage and legacy as just cause to make him leader. Kim Jong Il's leadership was defined by his "songun" policy of putting the powerful military first. Kim Jong Un's formal ascension will usher in a new era of leadership — but it remains to be seen what direction he will take the nation of 24 million people. "It is impossible to say with certainty what his era will look

like. Trying to anticipate the near future is tough enough," said Andray Abrahamian, executive director of the Choson Exchange, a Singapore-based nonprofit group that facilitates educational exchange with North Korea. "We expect greater caution and less willingness to try new things in the near term, making our programs more difficult to run. Things look like they're locking down already." He is said to celebrate his birthday in January, but the year — or even the name of his mother — have not been revealed publicly. Even his name, though whispered for years, was never published in state media until the announcement in September 2010 that he had been promoted to four-star general. "There is a rumor that he is married, but officially we don't know," said Yoon Deok-ryong, who specializes in North Korean economic reform at the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy in Seoul. On Monday, the state-run Korean Central News Agency called him the "Great Successor," and urged the people to rally around their next leader. Kim Jong Un is expected to lean on members of his father's inner circle, including his aunt, Kim Jong Il's sister Kim Kyong Hui; her husband, Jang Song Thaek; and other Kim Jong Il confidants, experts said. "I wouldn't draw huge conclusions from the fact that he spent a year or two in Europe as a boy," Delury said. "But you know, he's significantly younger, and generational shifts happen no matter wherever you are in the world, including North Korea, so he is going to have a different orientation." Apart from these few tantalizing details, much remains unknown about Jong Un or the real breadth of his power. "There's much uncertainty," Yoon said. "Because we don't know who's really in charge." ___ Associated Press writers Alexa Olesen in Beijing, Malcolm Foster in Tokyo and Foster Klug in Seoul, South Korea, contributed to this report
