It’s OffIcIal:
William “Bill” Blair Jr. Park is a loving tribute to him from his oldest daughter, Debra:
By Debra Blair-abron ElitE NEws
the Dallas Park and Recreation Board voted on last thursday, by a margin of 12-2, to rename Rochester Park william “Bill” Blair, Jr. Park! the Committee to rename Rochester Park was led by Chairman Jerry Bob Chambers. we were blessed to have on the board people who knew of Mr. Blair’s many, many contributions to this great city! A Dallas native, he attended B. F. Darrell Elementary school and graduated from Booker t. washington High school. He attended Prairie View A&M University and then enlisted in the United states Army, becoming the youngest Black First sergeant in the Army during world war ii. Affectionately called Dr. Blair, he has entertained Presidents (lyndon Baines Johnson, william Jefferson Clinton), Governors (John Connelly, Ann Richards, Rick Perry), senators (Kay Bailey Hutchinson), members of Congress (Eddie Bernice Johnson and Pete sessions), and Mayors (Annette strauss, Ron Kirk
and tom leppert), just to name a few. Mr. Blair has played in the famed Negro Baseball leagues with greats like winfield welch, Jesse “Hoss” walker, and Buster Haywood; and toured with Jesse Owens and the
Harlem Globe-trotters. Mr. Blair was instrumental in the development of the African American Museum’s texas sports Hall of Fame and serves on its Advisory Board. He was inducted in 1996 as a member of its inaugural
class. He is credited with mentoring country music star Charley Pride, and baseball great Ernie “Mr. Cub” Banks. Mr. Blair is married to Mozelle, his wife of 68 years and they have seven beautiful children. Below
let’s vote aBout it!
“Let me just say “thank you” to Mr. Paul Dyer, Mr. John Jenkins, Mr. Kevin Moore and the staff at the Dallas Park and Recreation Department. You have done a wonderful thing in choosing to honor this wonderful and honorable man. The William “Bill” Blair, Jr Park will become a place for fun, entertainment and enjoyment for kids young and old and of all races and ethnicities! We have baseball clinics, local, state and national baseball, and softball games planned and you will even be able to do a little fishing if you like. This is a good one. Well, what more can I say about this Giant of a man. Some of you have had the opportunity to meet him, and for those who have not, you know of him from his efforts and contributions to this City and abroad. Mr. Blair knows something about everybody. I can say that because See Blair, continued on Page 3

they Did Not understand; Do You understand? luke 18:31-33pp mt 20:17-19; mk 10:32-34 ”Jesus again Predicts His Death, Jesus took the 12 aside and told them, “We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the son of man will be fulfilled. He will Henry Nelson be handed over to the Gentiles. they will mock him, insult him, spit on him, flog him and kill him. on the third day he will rise again.” the disciples did not understand any of this. its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what he was talking about.”
t
he ability to make intelligent and correct decisions is one of the great secrets of successful Christian living. Even if you are not a sports fan i think you will appreciate this story about a college football team whose starting quarterback had just been injured. their #2 quarterback was sick, and had not even dressed out for the game. All the coach had left was a 3rd-string freshman who had been a quarterback in high school, but who was just
being used on the college team as a punter. to make matters worse, they were backed up on their own 3-yard line. it was a desperate situation, and the coach’s only thought was somehow to get a little farther from their goal line to give them room to punt out of danger. sending in the 3rd-string quarterback, the coach said, “son, i want you to hand off to the big fullback Dennis Brown for the next two plays, let him run right into the middle of the line and get us a few yards of breathing room. then i want you to punt.” the young quarterback did as he was instructed. On the first play he handed off to Brown, but almost miraculously Brown found a hole off tackle and ran for 50 yards. the young quarterback called the same play again, and once more, miracle of miracles, the hole opened again and Brown gained another 45 yards. the fans went crazy. in two plays they had gone 95 yards, and the ball was on their opponent’s 2-yard line. it was first down and goal to go! Confidently the team lined up once again. the young quarterback received the snap, stepped back and to everyone’s amazement, punted the ball into the end zone. As his stunned teammates came off the field,
the coach angrily grabbed the young quarterback and demanded, “what in the world were you thinking about when you called that last play?” the quarterback answered, “i was thinking what a dumb coach we have.” Now that story sounds ridiculous, but the truth of the matter is that many college and professional coaches today do not expect their quarterbacks to make decisions. they send all the plays in from the bench. when He created us in His own image, this was primary among the characteristics with which He endowed us with the ability to understand, to reason, and to choose. the apostle Paul once said, “i preach unto you Christ crucified. Unto the Jews that is a stumbling block. Unto the Greeks it is foolishness. But to those who are saved it is the power of God and the wisdom of God.” You see, the old rugged cross is the very heart of the message about Jesus. that is why Jesus took His apostles aside and said, “i have something important to tell you. we are going to Jerusalem, and when we get there they are going to turn me over to the Gentiles, who will mock me, insult me, spit on me, flog me, and kill me. And then on the third day i will rise
“taste test” Wake up!
again.” Now what could be clearer than that? Jesus did not tell them that just once, but over and over again. in Matthew 16, 17, & 20 Jesus tells them the same thing just as clearly as He does here. Now let’s go on to vs. 34. “the disciples did not understand any of this. its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what He was talking about.” is not that an interesting verse of scripture? why did not they understand? in amazement, we wonder, “what’s the matter with them? were they hard of hearing? why did not they get the message? why did not they understand?” i pray that you all realize that there are some things you learn later on in life that, as you look back, you are amazed that we did not learn sooner. You reach a stage in life where you look back and see all the dumb things you have done, and wish that somehow you had known then what you know now. How much better life could have been if i had just learned those lessons earlier? If you would like to have the rest of the message, please contact me at: Revelations_75044@msn.com

he makes himself acquainted and familiarizes himself with something about everyone he meets. When you want to know anything about this city, Mr. Blair is the King of history. He thinks he knows everything, and if you ask him, he will tell you, “I know everything.” It has been said that he knows a lot of people - and the story goes something like this. Blair went to The Vatican in Rome, ‘Blair you don’t know everyone,’ someone said. ‘Man, I told you, I do,’ Blair said. At that time Pope John Paul, came to the window and waived at him. Blair said, ‘I told you I know everybody!’ I Love this man for what he stands for. He is dedicated to his business. I can hardly ever think of a time he has taken more than two days for vacation, unless there was a death in his family. He is often called ‘father’ by many, taking it on himself to undertake people’s concerns; never letting anyone feel left out. He often says, ‘There, are more common people like me than the big shots when it really comes to getting to the heart of the matter, so stick with them.’ He doesn’t worry about things, he just ‘let’s the chips fall where they may.’ Blair often says, ‘you don’t have to like me, just respect me,’ because he calls a spade a spade. We have no idea of the pulse points of this city, but he does. He has helped make this city, in helping his people for the betterment of this city, often saying, ‘If you don’t stick up
s
for your own who, will?’ He gives away a lot more than he gets. He is a first in everything he has ever done throughout his life. He is known to the Church and community as the ‘Church’s friend’ and the ‘community’s encourager.’ Mr. Blair took his business, The Elite News, to the Church when others won-

dered how he could do business with the church. But he didn’t look at it in that way because he didn’t do it for the money; though God made the way. Dr. Blair knows that everything, ‘began in the church and it will end with the church.’ The city today is better off because of this elephant of a man. I often call him that because he reminds me of the leader of an elephant herd. They have an excellent memory and rarely forget what

they learn. It has been often said, on journeys searching for food and water the elephant has been known to raise his foot into the air until he recaptures in mind the route of a past journey, hundreds of miles away. With his foot still in the air, he recaptures in mind the past journey, then puts his foot down and proceeds on toward his destination! Whenever there is something important for Black people and all the people in this city, the media knows just where to find him, to get his take on the issues. I can say that I am proud of what this man has done for me as a woman, showing me strength without even saying a word. There have been many times when I had to go to the restroom and dry my tears about different situations concerning business, people, and about life; he would not tell you how - he would be the example shown through his actions. Some people think he’s mean. Nope, he just doesn’t play about life! He is about his Father’s business. He really is a big old teddy bear. ‘Greatness comes only to those who seek, not how to avoid obstacles, but to overcome them,’ said Theodore Roosevelt. This is just some of Dr. Blair’s history. This really does not tip the scale; how much more can I say about my Daddy? Read the book!” Coming soon: renaming of the park ceremony.

when skip said he received a call from wig and Chris Arnold wanting to get the old gang back together, he decided it was a good idea but he wanted to do it a different way to not only add flavor but to also keep the brand “skip Murphy and Company,” but to also stay up with technology because “internet is the wave of the future.” skip decided to get back together after being separated for a few years. i asked skip what has the gang been up to since the departure from K104 and he said that; Nanette lee had been still doing comedy and guest appearances on radio and tV; Chris Arnold continues as sports Announcer for the Mavericks; wig had a baby and
became a stay-athome dad; sam Putney has just been at home getting on his wife’s nerves; and, he (skip) has learned how to play golf and now has become addicted and plays at least four times a week. when asked if he thinks sMAC will ever go back to radio, skip said right now he is not focused on just radio; he is excited about the internet. He has done radio for 35 years. the radio is something that “skip Murphy and Company” are able to launch themselves as a brand that they started in 1993 and because they are recognized by their loyal fan base that includes all ages and races. the show is now better than ever with the
same characters they use to have like “Charlie Rock N Roll’ and more--it’s wilder than ever. the first day on the air sMAC had an overwhelming response from listeners. they exceeded the capacity and within two days they had 250K listeners. Due to the overwhelming response and popular demand, everybody couldn’t get in to hear the show! the system was overloaded. to prevent this from happening, become a skip Murphy & Company ViP member, Go to www.skipmurphyandcompany.com and click on the ViP link. the ViP membership allows you to log in and listen at any time, guaranteed! log on to www.skipmurphyandcompany.com click on listen live Mon-Fri. 9am-11am (central time) or download the free “sMAC“ app for Android phones. Advice Column: Ask Karen Hollie Old Barns and Old People (Very interesting reading sent to me by a friend.)
A
stranger came by the other day with an offer that set me to thinking. He wanted to buy the old barn that sits out by the highway. i told him right off he Geraldine was crazy. He was a Davidson-Hooker city type, you could tell by his clothes, his car, his hands, and the way he talked. He said he was driving by and saw that beautiful barn sitting out in the tall grass and wanted to know if it was for sale. i told him he had a funny idea of beauty. sure, it was a handsome building in its day. But then, there’s been a lot of winters pass with their snow and ice and howling wind. the summer sun’s beat down on that old barn ‘til all the paint’s gone, and the wood has turned silver gray. Now the old building leans a good deal, looking kind of tired. Yet, that fellow called it beautiful. that set me to thinking. i walked out to the field and just stood there, gazing at that old barn. the stranger said he planned to use the lumber to line the walls of his den in a new country home he’s building down the road. He said you couldn’t get paint that beautiful. Only years of standing in the weather, bearing the storms and scorching sun, only that can produce beautiful barn wood. it came to me then. we’re a lot like that, you and i. Only it’s on the inside that the beauty grows with us. sure we turn silver, gray too ... and lean a bit more than we did when we were young and full of sap. But the Good lord knows what He’s doing. And as the years pass He’s busy using the hard weather of our lives, the dry spells and the stormy seasons to do a job of beautifying our souls that nothing else can produce. And to think how often folks holler because they want life easy! they took the old barn down today and hauled it away to beautify a rich man’s house. And i reckon someday you and i’ll be hauled off to Heaven to take on whatever chores the Good lord has for us on the Great sky Ranch. And i suspect we’ll be more beautiful then for the seasons we’ve been through here ... and just maybe even add a bit of beauty to our Father’s house. May there be peace within you today. May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.

thank God for Resurrection sunday for without it Christianity would have no value.
we saw in the lesson the love and devotion Mary and the other women had for Jesus as they made their way to the tomb to do what they thought was the final service they could do for their fallen leader. As they approached the tomb they remembered the stone that was rolled over the mouth of the grave and asked themselves “who shall roll away the stone?” God knowing that they would be coming had dispatched an angel to go down and roll the stone away. the stone was not moved for Jesus to
get out because he was already up and out of the tomb, but that they could get in and report what God had done. the angel stayed until they got there and asked them “why are you looking for the living among the dead, He is not here he has risen like he said he would.” thank God for Resurrection. the morning message was delivered by Pastor lloyd Morgan from the subject “Christ’s Resurrection: the foundation of Christianity” 1Cor. 15:12-24. if there is no Resurrection then Christmas have no real meaning. if Jesus had simply lived a godly life and preformed miracles and died on the cross but was not raised from the dead to live forever more, he would simply be another man that the Romans crucified no better than the two thieves’ that was hung there with him. But his resurrection assures us that there is life after death. Had He simply been resuscitated like lazarus he would have died again, but in Revelations 1:18 he declared “i am he that lives and was dead and behold i am alive for evermore.” Be blessed

f we study the life and kingship of solomon, we will understand why he sought the face of God and not necessarily the hand of God. solomon knew that if he had the face of God he would have the hand of God. God said to him ask what you want. solomon asked for wisdom, and God gave him wisdom and much more. we too can receive the blessPastor Clarence ings of God by Henderson meeting the four conditions outlined in 2nd Chronicles 7:14. these conditions are: 1. to humble ourselves, 2. Pray, 3. seek God’s face, 4. turn from our wicked ways. there are three things God will do if we meet the condition and that is: 1. Hear from Heaven, 2. Forgive our sins, 3. Heal our land. Now we can see that seeking the face of God will move the hand of God upon our condition.

he NBA play-offs are in full bloom and basketball authorities pop up everywhere. Regardless where you are there is always someone that’s got it figured out. the barber shop is no exception. Leon Simon After each game they predict a different out come for the season’s end. On Easter sunday after blowing a 23-point lead the Maverick’s season was all over. trying to play the devils advocate, i suggested that none of these teams are consistent enough to count any one out or crown any one Champion. the OK City thunder team looks as good as anyone. the Bulls seem hot for a hot minute. the Celtics started out kind of slow now they seem to be the team that everyone thought they would be now. Now i’m hearing the Celtics will win the east. My contention is that its way too early to pick a winner. At this point the Knicks are the only team in the play-offs that know for sure they’re out. i don’t care where you go you’ll see someone that thinks the Mavericks don’t have a chance, and as an antagonist i say the lakers are struggling too. they reply the lakers are chilling, that’s the team las Vegas built its bets on. i guess as a friend suggested the san Antonio spurs are chilling too. they’re chilling just like Ohio state University, Duke, North Carolina, Kansas and the rest of the field did in the NCAA basketball tournament. today you can find someone that says they knew Uconn would play Butler, for the National Championship. that same person would even say they knew the Rangers would play the Giants in the world series and that Green Bay would beat Pittsburgh in the super-Bowl. this guy is the type that Vegas never made a dime off of because he never bets even though he knows the answers to all society’s problems. then there’s the guy that never lost a bet. i have a friend that says every time he goes to the horse races he leaves with five to six hundred dollars! And i ask him, why are you not out there every day? i have to work he says. He’s smart enough to figure out how to leave the race track with $500 to $600 bucks but he can’t figure out that’s upward of $180,000 a year that he’s leaving to go to a job. i don’t think the athletes of today are that good. that’s the reason for the inconsistent play. that explains how the Mavericks can blow a 23 - point lead; and how the Knicks can lead the Heat by 15 in the first half and trail at halftime. the Buffalo Bills came from thirty some points behind to defeat the Houston Oilers in the AFC championship game. the Dallas Cowboys almost broke the score board on the Bills in the super Bowl. i think that every NBA team is loaded with mediocre players and it shows in their play. throw in a bad referee call here and there and that my friend is the NBA!!!

let’s vote about it! By lola searcy
Elite News staff writer

t was a letter from former Dallas Mayor tom leppert, on January 17, whereby he announced his decision not to seek re-election to the office of Dallas Mayor that began the speculation about who would seek election for the office of Dallas Mayor - this country’s eighth largest city. Enter David Kunkel, Ron Natinsky, Edward Okpa and Mike Rawlings, they are the candidates who will be soliciting your votes for the office of
DaviD kuNkle Mayor. it looks like Ron Natinsky, Mike Rawlings and Edward Okpa are garnishing all or most of the political pundits’ conversation. But, just what are we voting about this election cycle? when you talk to people about the election, most of them say they want a mayor and leader who can bring jobs to the Dallas area; namely the southern sector. then, there are those citizens who want a mayor who will continue to support Dallas Police Chief David Brown and the Dallas Police Department, and who has done an outstanding job with protecting the citizens of this great city! then there are those citizens who are concerned about the ever increasing problems with the Dallas independent school District. these are critical issues facing our city, so let’s take an in depth look at the four (4) gentlemen vying for the office of Mayor of the City of Dallas. And just so we don’t offend anyone, we will discuss them
page 9
in alphabetical order. the first Mayoral candidate is former City of Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle. Kunkle has never been elected to any office. He was hired by the City of Dallas to serve as its Police Chief, a job he performed well during his tenure as Chief of Police from 2004 until his retirement last year. Kunkle has never publicly mentioned any interest in public office, so his entry into the Mayor’s race took some City Hall insiders by surprise. “i’ve spent my whole career in
roN NatiNskY local government, so i understand public policies and processes,” said Kunkle. “Beyond that, i’ve been in every neighborhood in the City of Dallas.” it was during former Chief Kunkle’s administration that crime fell in Dallas. the Dallas Police Department, under Dallas’ current Police Chief, David Brown, has done a great job in “taking a bite out of crime” ever since. Kunkle received an endorsement from former Mayor laura Miller, earlier this month. After receiving the endorsement from former Dallas Mayor laura Miller, Kunkle still received endorsements from a few Pastors in Dallas’ southern sector. Ms. Miller, who was Dallas’ Mayor when Dallas Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones packed up “America’s team” and moved to Arlington, after the Miller led City Council was unable to negotiate a deal that would bring owner Jerry Jones’ Cowboys’ 1 billion dollar stadium and thousands of jobs to
the southern sector. it will be interesting to see if the people who reside in the southern sector will remember the loss of the Cowboys to Arlington, or if the southern sector residents have forgotten that a large part of the blame fell to former Mayor laura Miller, who has endorsed and is raising money for David Kunkle. Ron Natinsky is a current member of the Dallas City Council. Elected to the Dallas City Council from District 12 in 2005, he currently chairs the City of Dallas’ Economic Development Committee. Among his accomplishments as the Economic Development Chair, he helped attract the world headquarters of At&t, Comerica Bank and tenet Healthcare. Dallas is a complex city with diverse cultures and a host of dynamic – yet very different – neighborhoods. “My conversations with residents all across our city show that we all have similar views on what we want from our elected officials.” we may have varying views on what our neighborhoods should be, but not on the kind of mayor we want to lead our diverse city council,” Natinsky said. Natinsky has outlined five priorities for himself if elected to the Mayor’s office: (1) he will create jobs by continuing to build Dallas’ economy; (2) he plans to do it by refining the mix of economic tools our city uses to attract new companies to the city and maintain those already here; (3) assertively encourage companies to relocate to Dallas, from adjacent suburbs, from other texas cities; (4) encourage job growth across the southern sector; and (5) he says he will ensure the declining crime rate drops even further and he will do it by maintaining our recent move back to beat patrols, which he championed, and he will advocate for upgraded fire

the name recognition and the mainstream support needed to lead this city. Mr. Mike Rawlings’ list of endorsements reads like a list of “who’s who” in business, politics and religion. He has served for more than 30 years as a CEO of three companies, the largest being Pizza Hut. Under his leadership, Pizza Hut had major upturn in business, resulting in the highest weekly store sales in history and the company has recorded record growth under Mr. Rawling’s leadership. Mr. Rawlings is the former chair of the Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). During his tenure as chair, the CVB brought in events that generated $400 million in direct economic impact to the City of Dallas. Rawlings is the former President of the Dallas Park and Recreation Board and he is credited with raising more than $1 million dollars in private funds to save basic services from budget cuts. For four years Mr. Rawlings served as Dallas’ Homeless Czar, overseeing the construction and opening of the Bridge; which serves as the cornerstone of the City’s long term plan to help the
homeless. Rawlings has outlined a comprehensive plan for Dallas’ southern sector, called six beachheads, which covers key locations in the southern sector. All of the candidates have very detailed plans for which direction they plan to take the city in, if elected. You can read all about them by visiting their respective websites. As always we encourage our readers to be informed about the people who solicit their votes. Cast your vote for the candidate who best represents your issues!

the race who has a PhD for Dallas…Passion, hard work and dedication; and he says Dallas needs a Mayor who will serve all citizens of Dallas - whether they live in the Northern or southern sector of the City. He has what he calls the DEEP plan for Dallas. DEEP is an acronym for Dallas Economic Empowerment Plan (DEEP), which addresses issues such as public safety, budget, new jobs, neighborhood revitalization, and international trade and education/training. Mr. Okpa has a new and different approach to fixing what is wrong with Dallas. As a matter of fact, he says if elected he will take a sprinkler system approach to the economy. Rather than operate this city like a river or dam where everything flows to one area or one section of the city, he will use the sprinkler system, so that the wealth is equally distributed throughout the city; that way everyone benefits economically. Mr. Okpa’s plan for Dallas has been praised by many, however, there are still those in this city who say he just does not have

Little Known Black History By Bettye Williams “Katt”
Part 6: In 1971, Judson Robinson became Houston’s first black city councilman since Reconstruction. A year later Barbara Jordan was elected to the United States House of Representatives, thus becoming the first African American in Texas history to represent the state in Congress. Her election symbolized the progress that blacks had made in the state after over 100 years of racial segregation and exclusion. Despite the lingering effects of the old racist and segregationist legacy, African Americans continued to achieve in both the private and public spheres in the state. They won elective office on the city, county, and statewide levels.
