Doing the right thing Exodus 33:19-23 “And the Lord said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will Henry Nelson have compassion on whom I will have compassion. But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.”Then the Lord said, “There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen.”

ave you ever had a really, really bad day? Have you had a day when nothing seemed to go right? if you think you have had a bad day, consider the testimony of this person as he attempts to explain his accident to the insurance company. i am writing in response to your request for additional information. in block number three of the accident reporting form, i put “poor planning”
as the cause of my accident. You said in your letter that i should explain more and i trust that the following details are sufficient: today, we are going to give consideration to someone that kept having bad days. what makes this person so interesting is that in the midst of these difficult situations, he shows tremendous courage. His name is Joseph. when we first come across Joseph, we note that he is the favorite son of Jacob. He is such a favorite that Jacob buys him a very expensive colored coat that makes the other brothers crazy. You see Joseph had a sibling problem. they were all very jealous that Joseph had received such a beautiful coat. But perhaps what made it worse were the dreams that Joseph kept having. these dreams were prophecies of greatness and places of leadership, even over his brothers. Needless to say, the brothers did not receive the reports about these dreams so well. Day by day, this favored-son status gnawed at them and their jealousy turned into hatred. One day, Joseph was sent by his father on a mission to his brothers. seeing an opportunity to be rid of this annoyance, they took Joseph prisoner. they had had enough, and they cast him into a pit to die. reuben, the eldest, interceded for a change of plans. instead of leaving Joseph to die, they agree to sell him to some ishmaelites, who then will take him to Egypt.
this brings us now to our study of Genesis 39. so we will breakdown the story of Joseph in Genesis 39 into six sections that will show how he handled adversity. the first section is PrOMOtiON Now Joseph had been brought down to Egypt, and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, had bought him from the ishmaelites who had brought him down there. the lord was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, and he was in the house of his Egyptian master. His master saw that the lord was with him and that the lord caused all that he did to succeed in his hands. so Joseph found favor in his sight and attended him, and he made him overseer of his house and put him in charge of all that he had. from the time that he made him overseer in his house and over all that he had the lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; the blessing of the lord was on all that he had, in house and field. so he left all that he had in Joseph’s charge, and because of him he had no concern about anything but the food he ate. when Joseph reached Egypt, he was about 17 years old. the ishmaelites sold him to a man named Potiphar. But Potiphar was no ordinary man. when it came to Egyptian leadership, he was up near the top, for Potiphar headed up the military wing that guarded the Pharaoh. so Joseph is forced to leave the life of a shepherd-farmer and becomes a servant in
C ity B eat an Egyptian household. it is here he will learn new customs, speech, and language. He will even become familiar with hieroglyphics. immediately, Joseph shows a flair for administration. His administrative skills were put to work and it became clear to Potiphar that he had gotten a bargain. this Joseph was a valuable employee. for everything that Joseph did, he did well. Everything that Joseph managed was done better than it had ever been done before. and the text tells us why; there is relationship between God’s presence and His blessing.the lord was with Joseph. Joseph knew prosperity because God was with him. it was not anything that Joseph had done per se. it was because God was blessing him. prosperity. it was extraordinary. it was unexpected. But it was also very obvious. for even Potiphar had to acknowledge that God was with Joseph. so, because Joseph was a faithful man with unusual ability, Potiphar entrusted the entire management of his house to him. and as a result, Potiphar was blessed as well. if you would like the rest of this message please request it at: revelations_75044@msn.com

2011 Inductees and their wives ladies’ man, whose ladies were being murdered one by one and he was the prime suspect. His friends and family members try to help unravel this mess and prove his innocence, while a former girlfriend is trying to cling to him for life. However, Deandre had other plans for his life and they didn’t include her. Other cast members include actor Christian Keyes, comedian D. Ellis, Hip Hop sensation Big Chief, pop star lauren ashley, actress amelia Jeffries and K-104 morning show host lady Jade. the musical highlight of the evening was the one and only Jennifer Holliday, two time Grammy award winner and recording artist and Broadway sensation. the only thing Ms. Holliday has lost is lots of weight because that voice is still intact and she brought down the house. and, of course, Ms. Holliday sang one of my favorites, the song that most of us have tried to sing at one time or another, “and i am telling You i’m Not Going” from the Broadway musical Dream Girls. Not only does she sound great, but Ms. Holliday looks great! this production was written by Dallas native, Ms. t. D.

Dallas School 2008 Bond Program District 5 as school starts on Monday, aug. 22, we’ll see an enhanced Dallas isD landscape with the opening of four brand new schools and four repurposed schools, thanks to the 2008 Bond Program. the district is welcoming to its family George Herbert walker Bush Elementary school, Ebby Halliday Elementary school, and the brand new building for the Kathlyn Joy Gilliam Collegiate academy, formerly housed at the Nolan Estes Plaza, is the fourth campus opening this year. i am especially excited about the opening of schools for District 5 students in the wilmerHutchins area: wilmer-Hutchins Elementary school, a brand new school; and KennedyCurry Middle school and wilmer-Hutchins High school, both reopening under Dallas isD. also in District 5, the repurposed campuses Barack Obama Male leadership academy and a. residents throughout many parts of the city can now see the transformed and modernized learning spaces in their neighborhood schools as approximately 80 campuses are ready to welcome back students and staff in their expanded and/or renovated facilities. Clinton P. russell and Daniel webster elementary schools are opening their new wings this school year. all of the new schools as well as the renovations and expansions to existing campuses include environmentally-friendly elements and construction features. School News another new item that the 2011–2012 school year brings is the implementation of new school hours. as collaborative planning time will no longer be scheduled during the school day, new start and end times will give campuses flexibility in providing planning time for staff. The new hours are: • Prekindergarten 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. • Elementary schools 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. • Elementary school Vanguards (grades 46)8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. • Montessori schools (Pre-K-8) 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. • Middle schools 8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. • Middle school Academies 8:45 a.m. to

Parents may call (972) 925-5437 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday, aug. 22 and tuesday, aug. 23; and from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., wednesday, aug. 24 through friday, aug. 26. staff will be available to answer calls in English and spanish. Trustee Redistricting the growth of Dallas isD impacts each trustee’s district and, according to the 2010 Census data, Dallas isD’s trustee districts are out of balance and must be redrawn in order to comply with the “one person, one vote” requirement of the u. s. Constitution. therefore, Dallas isD’s Board of trustees is considering new boundaries for its trustee districts. During a series of public hearings, the Board obtained comments and suggestions
from the community about its redistricting plan. Preliminary plans and other information about the school district’s redistricting process are available on the school district’s web site at www.dallasisd.org/redistricting/. School Ratings as you may be aware, the latest report on school performance, which incorporates the new state standards from the texas Department of Education, was released this summer. Of the 32 schools in District 5, eight schools were ranked Exemplary, six received a Recognized rating, and 12 were ranked as Academically Acceptable. the six schools that received an Academically Unacceptable rating are drafting campus improvement plans for consideration. these campuses will reach out to local communities seeking input on how to work together to bring the campuses up to state standards. look for communications from Dallas isD about Campus improvement community meetings to be scheduled very soon. i welcome opportunities to meet with students, parents and community members about the many successes within Dallas isD, and District 5 in particular. Contact my office at 972-925-3722 for a list of schools in District 5 where you can volunteer as a tutor or mentor or to schedule my visit. let’s make this a great new school year!

Out of the Eyes of a Layman Taking God at His Word
D
o we really take God at His word? we say we do, but do we Gene Turner really, totally believe what God says will eventually come true? well, we do not act like we do, because if we really take God at His word, we would not do some of the things that we do. the reason why i say that is because i am a prime example, and that is why i was a non-believer for so long. in other words that is why i remained in the world of sin not knowing, and not wanting to know God, because i did not take God at His word. i heard my mother talk about the joy of Jesus Christ. i read about it in sunday school all my childhood days. i’ve heard preachers preach about the joy God will give, but i did not really believe that is because i was never baptized until i reached the age of forty-two. i did not think that anything could top the good times, and the fun i was having in the street of Dallas. i thought i was at the epitome of fun, and that is just what it was fuN. i did not think things could get any better that it was at the time in my life, but i had never experienced joy until i met the lord Jesus Christ. after i met Jesus i found JOY and you know it is a funny thing about JOY, you can’t explain it no matter how much you try. all you can do is tell somebody how to get it, but you cannot explain to anybody about it. all you can tell them is that you found complete JOY in Jesus Christ. they have to get it for themselves. after experiencing the joy i would not give it up for any amount o f money. when you have JOY you will be able to do great things in God’s name. You remember when Peter and John went down to samaria (acts 8:14-18) and simon the soceror asked Peter and John to sell him some of this power or magic. Now, when i became a Christian i began to understand why a sinner would not
www.dfwelitenews.com
take God at His word. Men of God often get caught up in traps, because they go through the motion of taking God at His word, but in some instances they really don’t, but we as Christians must learn to take God at His word. there are some people we read about in the Bible who did not take God at His word. take adam for instance, He really did not take God at His word when God told him if he ate of the forbidden fruit he would surely die. after adam sinned. God made it plain that to please Him or make atonement for your sins, there must be the shedding of blood. well abel and Cain understood this, but Cain offered up fruits and vegetables which was good, but not acceptable for sin, and that is why God turned his offering down, but accepted abel’s offering. Cain did not take God at His word. Don’t you be a fool enough to believe that if you want something, just believe hard enough and you will have it. this is not faith. faith is taking God at His word. it is believing and acting on what God has revealed. Joy is inward, a response to man fulfilling his creation purpose of fellowship with God, and how can man fulfill his creation purpose? By “taking God at His word”. as Christians we say we believe God’s word. Do we really? let us remember to read our Bibles. May God bless you rEal GOOD, and may He ever keep you in His loving care Layman and activities please call Gene Turner at 214-228-9470
Mark 11:22-23 22 “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. 23 “Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. page 5

A Father’s Love
T
he story is told of a father and his teenage son. the relationship between the two became more and more strained until one night the son ran away. Days, weeks and Geraldine months went by Davidson-Hooker and when the son did not return the father began a journey in search of the runaway boy. finally in Madrid, spain, in a desperate attempt to find the boy, the father put a small ad in the local newspaper. the ad read, “Dear Paco, meet me in front of the newspaper office at noon. all is forgiven. Your father.” the next day, in front of the newspaper office, eight hundred Pacos showed up. they were all seeking forgiveness and reconciliation with their fathers. i’m sure this story reminds you of the story recorded in our scripture lesson. that too was a Paco who ran away from his father but who “came to himself” and found forgiveness and reconciliation. One can’t help but wonder how many other Pacos there are out there: Pacos who have yet to learn of their father’s love. if by chance one is reading this devotional, may he/she not hesitate to respond to the father’s love and come home. the good news of the gospel is found in these words: “Paco, i love you. Please come home. all is forgiven.” 1 John 1:9: “if we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Hebrews 11:6 6 and without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

O
ur Church school lesson was “Choosing a Community” ruth 1:8-18. this is perhaps the most beautiful picture of love and devotion between two people. Eld Lloyd T. Morgan Naomi is the personification of a godly mother-in-law who loved both her God and her family. she had two daughter in laws named Orpah and ruth who loved her and was willing to leave their homeland and become a part of israel. Naomi tried to convince her two daughters to return to their own people. Orpah took her advice and returned, ruth spoke those word that we so often hear at weddings ruth 1:16-17; “and ruth said, intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, i will go; and where thou lodgest, i will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God: in the lesson we see the begin-
ning of God doing something great in the life of a person who had no idea how the death of her husband and her following her mother in law into a land that was foreign to her, who worshipped a God she only knew through her motherin-law would prove to be a great blessing to her and to the world. the morning message was delivered by Pastor lloyd Morgan his subject was “do right because it’s right to do right” Gal 2:1114. He encouraged our youth who was returning to school to avoiding being diverted from their purpose of attending school by peer pressure or bulling. sometimes children pressure themselves because they feel that being a part of a certain group make them “cool” or part of the “in” group. in church there can also be peer pressure upon members by certain groups. there are those that think that their longevity as members give them a certain amount of importance and authority over the newer members, thus causing a division in the church. Be Blessed!

L
ast week we talked about praying with an attitude of expectation. Even at that, we need to ask God to teach us the importance of knowing how to wait. the scripture Pastor Clarence Henderson clearly says “they that will wait upon the lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk and not faint” (isaiah 40:31). as we search the scriptures, we can clearly see what comes to those who wait with expectation. we can say as samuel said to the lord, “speak for thy servant heareth” (1 samuel 3:10). then look for His answers. You will be amazed at how He answers in ways you had not thought of. therefore, be steadfast and unmovable, waiting on the lord will pay off after while.

n an attempt to understand the moral direction this country is taking, it gets very confusing. a decade or so back i though the country or the Nfl would vote to remove the Dallas Leon Simon Cowboys from the Nfl. Michael irvin had a few episodes with police. the white house, a house some of the Cowboy’s supposedly had for their sexual escapades. it got so bad some reporters were caught hiding in trees, in the area around the Cowboy Café at Valley ranch. there are even a few people who think these events could have cost the Cowboys team of the 90’s a chance to win 4 super-bowls. the thought was had Dallas drafted randy Moss coming out of Marshall, they would have won that 4th super-Bowl. Jerry Jones was afraid to pull the trigger on Moss because he had some baggage with him. with the triplets still playing well, Moss and irvin would have been too tough to cover. But in order to stay on the good side of the fans nationally he chose to draft a good guy type in Gregg Ellis. Gregg was a good
recently with Michael Vick in his dog fighting and executions. Had Michael not gone to prison, he would have needed the secret service to protect him. the public sentiment toward him was that strong. there were some people that wanted him to do more time and never be given a job when he got out of jail. adam (Packman) Jones have a few incidents at strip joints, as a matter of fact, there’s a bouncer at a strip Joint in Vegas still paralyzed because of one such incident. there were rape accusations filed against Ben roethlisberger, drunk driving, and vehicular homicide cases filed against players. Plaxico Burress shots himself in the leg he gates a couple years in jail. You had the feeling that Joe Q Public was ready to write a new morals code for athletes then something changed. the guys that we thought society was ready to get rid of began to get jobs. in some cases got jobs ahead of guys you thought had the moral excellence to be voted Nfl Man of the Year. Michael Vick took Donovan McNabb’s job with Philadelphia. Packman Jones got a job with the Bengals; Plaxico got Braylon Edwards out of New York. Edwards is younger

and faster, although they could be the same person when it comes to off the field bad judgment moves. i don’t think any of those dogs Vick had executed returned to the living or society legalized dog fighting. But the same guy that would have needed the secret service to protect him is now as big in Philadelphia as rocky, Bill Cosby, the liberty Bell, and the Declaration of independence. some years we want to pray in school. then other years we don’t even want prayer in Church. i think we better make up our minds if we want a super-Bowl or a morally conscious society.

Meet Brian J. Nickerson of Singing Hills Funeral Home By: Lola Searcy ElitE NEws staff writEr
T
o look at him you would never imagine the kind of work he does. He has the face and the physique that you would expect to see on the cover of GQ. so, why is he in the business of taking care of the deceased? the answer is quite simple. it’s something Brian J. Nickerson was destined to do. Brian credits his mother and grandmothers for his career choice. as a child growing up, they went to church and to funerals frequently. He was always intrigued by the nice clothes only because he liked to dress up. “as a young man growing up people would always ask me what i wanted to be when i grow up. My answer was always a mortician. and when they asked me why, i would tell them because i like the suits and the limousines. But, as i grew older, i realized my calling was to help people, and that made me more intrigued about funeral service.” He was born and raised right here in Dallas. He graduated from Booker t. washington High school for the Performing and Visual arts and later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Music. He attended a Music conservatory in los angeles, for a number of years, honing the gift of Music given to him by God, all the while working part time in the funeral service business. after returning home to Dallas from his years in los angeles, he graduated from the prestigious Dallas institute of funeral service. Combining his passion for music with his desire to serve people in the funeral industry, he became a member of the rockwall friendship Baptist Church serving as
the Music Director. He later began working as a funeral Director at Paradise funeral Home in Dallas, tX which was the career he chose as a child. Brian says he had no plans to leave Paradise funeral Home, but God always has a better plan for you. He knows his coming to work for singing Hills funeral Home is where he is supposed to be. During the interview with Brian, it was obvious he loves what he does and he loves people. He answered the phone a few times over the course of the interview, and each time, he flashed that winning smile and proceeded to assist the caller. Brian insists on providing the families he serves with the best service. in order to do that, singing Hills funeral Home has been transformed into a state of the arts facility. Everything a family needs to make their loved one’s transition to eternity is available on site. a beautiful chapel (the largest of its kind in Dallas), boast beautiful chandeliers and seating for 350 people comfortably! it is very open and you get the feeling you’re at home as you enter the building. a beautiful cemetery is just a short walk across the immaculate and well maintained grounds. Brian says it is the goal of every staff member to make singing Hills funeral Home the household name it was when it was founded more than thirty years ago. Now as the Managing funeral Director he has the utmost respect for Mr. Charles woods, for giving him the opportunity to serve as funeral Director; stating that “Charles woods is the “Cornerstone” of singing Hills funeral Home.” Brain says the families he has been privileged to serve are a part of his extended family; and he makes it a point to remember the names of their loved ones. for a truly personal service from “people who care”, singing
