trust; it’s all or Nothing

Henry Nelson

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

C

an you imagine a marriage without trust? if one spouse cannot trust the other, will either one ever be comfortable in their relationship? what would happen in a family where the parents refused to trust their children? would they ever leave the house? what if your boss didn’t trust you to do your job? How long would you stay at job where your supervisor stood right behind you all day? How long can two people stay friends if they do not trust each other? it seems to me that trust is essential in all our relationships, even with God. we can take a look at the history in the Bible to find how true that can be. Joshua and Caleb said in Numbers 14:9 “Do not be afraid of the people of the land,

because we will swallow them up. their protection is gone, but the lOrD is with us. Do not be afraid of them.” amen! that kind of “God-is-with-us-we-will-win” trust can be seen in more recent history too. william Carey, often called the father of modern missions, faced a ministry disappointment of overwhelming proportions. Carey began his missionary career to india in 1793. He labored in that country for 40 continuous years, never once returning to his native England. Carey was a prodigious translator, translating portions of scripture into over a dozen indian languages. One afternoon after 20 years of plodding labor in that country, a fire raged through his printing plant and warehouse. all of his printing equipment was destroyed, but most tragically, many of his precious manuscripts were completely consumed by the fire. Of course, Carey had no computer back-up files or Xerox masters. twenty years of nonstop labor were gone within a few hours. How would he respond to this crushing devastation? Carey wrote to his pastor-friend, andrew Murray, in England: “the ground must be labored over again, but we are not dis-

couraged. we have all been supported under the affliction, and preserved from discouragement. to me the consideration of the divine sovereignty and wisdom has been very supporting. i endeavored to improve this our affliction last lord’s day, from Psalm 46:10, “Be still and know that i am God.” i principally dwelt upon two ideas. amen! God has a sovereign right to dispose of us as he pleases. we ought to (comply) in all that God does with us and to us. that kind of “God-is-with-us-we willwin” trust can be seen a story told by television and radio talk show host larry King. He talked about three farmers who gathered daily in a field during a horrible drought. the men are down on their knees, looking upward, and praying the skies would open and pour out a muchneeded rain. Unfortunately, the heavens were silent, and the petitioners become discouraged, but they continued to meet every morning to lift up their request to God. One morning an uninvited stranger approached and asked the men what they were doing. they said, “we are praying for rain.” the newcomer looked at each of them and shook his head, “No, i don’t think so.” the first farmer said, “Of

course we’re praying. we are down on our knees pleading for rain. look around, see the drought. we have not had rain in more than a year!” the outsider continues to nod his head and advises them their efforts will never work. the second farmer jumped in and cried, “we need the rain; we are not asking only for ourselves, but for our families and livestock.” the man listened, nodded, and said he still was not impressed. “You are wasting your time,” he said. the third farmer could not take any more, and in anger he yelled, “Okay, what would you do if you were in our shoes?” the visitor asked, “You really want to know?” the three landowners answer, “we really want to know! the future of our farmlands is at stake.” the guest announced, “i would have brought an umbrella!” the Bible says in Proverbs 3:5-6, “trust in the lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. amen! if you would like the rest of this week’s message please request it at: revelations_75044@msn.com

ESTABLISHED IN 1960

94.5 continued from front page

Candelaria, Program Director at 94.5 dropped by the Elite News office, we decided to ask them just why the change in the station’s format. “from a national holistic point of view, the reason we did it is because as you know it is all driven by ratings and revenues and the ratings and revenues have been down at the radio station. so, we did an intensive research project and found that there was an opportunity in this market for an old school r&B station. we played a little bit of old school, but we were never really focused on one thing. and after we finished the research, the decision was made to go old school”, said Jay stevens, VP of Programming. from the days of the Oasis, where you could relax and listen to some smooth jazz sounds, KsOC found itself trying to be all things to all people. But due to declining

s

ratings, and loss of market share, the management team put their heads together to figure out just what would be the best thing to do. they gained a good insight the weekend they celebrated the memory of Michael Jackson 24-7. they played every MJ song you knew, and thought you wanted to hear. in other words, they gave the people what they wanted and in doing so, they realized that when you give the people what they want, ultimately in return you get what you want. Better ratings, better market share and a partnership with the people and community you serve. But don’t despair their plan is to gradually add more jocks to the station’s lineup. they realize it is important to have a “face” and a community connection with jocks helping and supporting various causes throughout the community.

the Old school format was more than just a notion. the idea was well researched and it was determined that with artist such as Maze featuring frankie Beverly, al Green, tyrone Davis, Johnny taylor, just to name a few, the old school sound was well received. with selection of the old school format, it has the potential to catch fire around the country and change the way radio is listened to. You can’t put your finger on it right now, but you know it is special because people are gravitating to it; they are talking about it; they are listening to it and telling their friends about it. with all the activities surrounding the change, it speaks volumes to the success this new old school format will have. “we went out and talked to our audiences. and the people of Dallas said we want to hear old school. we played a little of the old school before, but it wasn’t focused on just old school. the response has been overwhelming it seems that people love the southern soul, the old school. to be quite honest, the 35 plus crowd didn’t have a radio station to call their own, but now they do”, said John Caldelaria, 94.5 Program Director. Hats off to the management at 94.5, for listening to the people and giving them the kind of music they want to hear! we’re pulling for your success! while the members of management admit they still have some tweaking to do, they will keep on tweaking it until they get it right for their listeners! they want your feedback on how the new old school format is going. share your thoughts about the new format on the web at www.oldschool945.com or you contact them via facebook at www.facebook.com/oldschool945 or text what you want to hear to 945 to 80185. and on Monday, august 8th Old school 94.5 will give away $1,000.00 to the 94th caller when they play, “southern Girl” by frankie Beverly and Maze. Call the station at 214.787.1945; be the 94th caller and you could be $1,000 dollars richer!

Tax-Free Items

tax free items include everything from baby clothes and diapers to dresses and tshirts. Undergarments, swimsuits, jeans, pants, skirts and slacks are tax-free items. so are sneakers, sandals and socks. and in case the heat wave of 2010 breaks, sweaters and sweatshirts are not taxed either.

Taxed

cialized, less necessary items of clothing such as jewelry, hair accessories, purses, football pants and golf gloves. regular shoes (sandals, slippers, sneakers) are exempt, but cleated shoes, fishing boots and ballet slippers are not. a more complete list of exempt and non-exempt items can be found on the state of texas website.

Out of the Eyes of a Layman “ When will God’s People come Together “

T

here was a “lay Person’s workshop” in the city of Dallas. July 22-24, 2011. texas Gene Turner was the Host state of this event. the official name of the workshop is “the walter Cade, Jr. southwest laymen workshop”. in this workshop we find that teaching is a very important part of this workshop. we have 12 different topics taught in this workshop, and all of them points to one given source, and that is God’s word to the laity. God has given a command to all men in the church what their duties and responsibilities are within the local church. in most of our Black churches today we find men going about their duties from a traditional standpoint, and this is what cause many problems within the church body. we are still trying to carry on like grand Pa and uncle Joe did sixty years ago. Paying Pastors with chickens, eggs, side of ham, etc. in many churches Deacons think their job is to watch the (Preacher) Pastor. in some places in East texas Deacons think they run the church. i was in one place and mentioned that a Deacon is a servant and was almost run out of town because of my statement. the walter Cade, Jr. workshop teaches, the church and Pastor are one, and not the Pastor and the church. You see, Jesus is married to the church, and we see that in Matthew 25, and a marriage brings about oneness. You cannot divide the church from the Pastor, nor can you divide the Pastor from the church. the church runs like a well-oiled machine when everything is in place according to the word of God. when all men in churches understand their responsibilities and duties within the local church, then and only then will we see the full advantage of true worship in our local churches. Men showed never try to carryout their own visions within the church, because that is not their job. all men in every church have one main job. Men in local churches have many jobs in the local church, but all men have a first job. Men in the local church have one and first main job in the local church, which comes in three (3) increments: a. accept. B. Promote, and c. Carryout the vision and ministry of the Pastor. Now, these are the things that we teach in the walter Cade, Jr. workshops. Now, you tell me why is it that most Pastors do not want

www.dfwelitenews.com

their men to participate in something that will help them? Our Pastors and churches for some reason still think when men come together. they are plotting against the preachers. Not so, this workshop was created to teach men, what they are commanded to do within the church of God. Most Black churches are against crossing conventions and denominational lines. what we need to understand is the fact that we are all God’s children, and we all belong to one body. all churches in Dallas were invited to this workshop o matter what the denomination were, because it was felt that the statement “Host state” would not be a true statement unless all churches supported this effort. we are not just talking about churches that are not in our convention, because most of the churches and Pastors did not support their own laymen’s workshop. Dr. franklin richardson who is pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, New York wrote a book: “ the Power of the Pew”. states in his book that one of the greatest problems in the Black Baptist Church is the lack of information found at the level of the Pew, and the lack of information made available to it. some pastors receive certain information, and they totally decide within themselves there is not a need for the church congregation, so, he throws it in file 13, and never mentions it. Hopefully when the walter Cade, Jr. workshop comes back to texas all churches will support and be a part of this great workshop. let us not forget to read our Bibles and may God bless you rEal GOOD, and may He ever keep you in His loving care. layman and activities please call Gene turner at 214-228-9470

Praise Him Even More Philippians 4:4 “rejoice in the lord always. i will say it again: rejoice!”

don’t recall ever being asked to explain the importance of breathing. it’s pretty well accepted that breathing is a good idea and that we should do it many times every day - a Geraldine lack of breathing is definitely bad for Davidson-Hooker our physical health. it’s not an exaggeration to say that praise is as important; it should become as natural, and occur as often as our breathing. for if we choose not to live a life of praise, we will just as surely suffocate and spiritually die. the life of praise requires only a little instruction and a great deal of application. to begin with, we must learn to alwaYs praise! Notice that rejoicing is so important that Paul decided to repeat himself. if we are living to love and glorify God, He has promised to work all things together for the good (romans 8:28); so why do we wait for what appear to be the proper conditions for praise? if we really understood and believed that God is in control, wouldn’t we praise Him regardless of our particular situation? “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 thessalonians 5:16-18). there is never a wrong time to praise God and there are never circumstances which don’t deserve our thankfulness. Job lost absolutely everything he had except his wife. He then developed sores over every part of his body and was so miserable that his wife encouraged him to “Curse God and die!” (Job 2:10). Job was in great pain and heavy sorrow, but he knew all things came from God with a purpose; “shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?” (Job 2:10). God is in the good as well as the trouble; we must learn to praise Him in all situations! Our life can become difficult and painful; we may feel bored and unfulfilled, cheated and abused. But if we look at the reasons which keep us from praising, we will find “self” expectations and pride - we will find a life lived according to the desires of the flesh and not according to the fruit of the spirit. Every portion of our life is to be offered “as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God” (romans 12:1). as we fix our eyes on the eternal glory we have through Jesus we will find more and more reasons to praise. let’s never allow our earthly circumstances to direct our praise: “let everything that has breath praise the lord” (Psalm 150:6). if we’re still breathing, we should still be praising! He has given us eternal life - an eternity of worship in His presence...and that’s a GrEat gift! let’s look for the hand of God working around us each and every day. let’s praise Him with all our heart, and then let’s praise Him even more!

hen we pray, we should pray in the will of God, knowing this one thing “the safest place in the whole wide world is in the will of God”. therefore we pray “let thy Pastor Clarence Henderson will be done on earth as it is in heaven”! a little girl was spending the night away from home. she was a bit frightened and when she prayed as usual before going to bed, she prayed, “father won’t you please make me feel as safe as i do when i go to bed at home”? she paused a moment and then said, “Of course you will”! we can learn a lot from little children. they can teach us how to come with bright expectation and in humble dependence. they can teach us how to trust, for no little child worries about where his food and clothing will come from. trusting God takes the worry out of life.

Notes From Union Hope

O

ur Church school lesson was “return to Obedience” Judges 10:1018.this lesson points out how israel had a habit of forgetting God when things Eld Lloyd T. Morgan were going well for them. they found pleasure in worshipping strange god’s of the people around them. Before we pass judgment on them for their actions we must first take a look at ourselves and how we do in our relationship with God. we must ask ourselves have the allure of this present world drawn us away from out true worship of God. Many believers have such a fixation on the things of this present world that they give God half hearted service. Our morning message was delivered by Pastor lloyd Morgan from the subject “Obedient faith in the word of the lord” John 4:46-53. in every dispensation we find this one requirement for God’s

blessings “Obedience”. the accounting is of a noble man whose son was at the point of death in Capernaum who came to Jesus when he was in Cana of Galilee seeking healing for his son. this was a 20 mile trip that he made to find Jesus. there is no more improbable scene in the world than an important court official traveling 20 miles to beg a favor from a village carpenter. Jesus told him to go back home his son was alive. it took faith in the word of the lord to turn around and go back home with only a word from the lord. the wonder of the master is that all he has to do is speak a word into our problems and if we can believe distance and time has no bearing on the power of his word. it was in faith and obedience to the master’s word that the man received what he wanted from the lord. Be Blessed! Rev 3:2 2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.

very night and day on the evening news, we talk about how obese this country is becoming. this is especially true with our youth. i was privileged to get some information of a policy change Leon Simon with our parks department. we’re closing swimming pools, cutting activities at some of our recreation centers. Now i understand that the new plan is to charge $25 an hour to use the park fields for all sports; Baseball, soccer, and football. the Nfl, NBa, MlB, are all encouraging our youth to get out and play. the Nfl is airing a commercial to get out and play. Play 60 is the theme and name of said commercial. that will cost you $25. in Dallas, the federal Government is trying to get rid of all the old folks by cutting social security. locally we are adding obesity to the many, many problems our youngsters already have. all of the non- relevant studies about our over weight kids mean nothing, if you’re adding to the lack of activities

duction to football in our program saved him over $160,000. the young man graduated from the University of arizona. it’s not just our program although we’ve had kids go to just about every major university in the country and upward of 15 in the Nfl. there are programs all over the city that work with young men and women. as a matter of fact one of our City Councilman went to school on an athletic scholarship. i wonder what would he be doing if the Parks Dept had charged his generation $25.00 an hour. we’re laying off teachers, cutting youth programs all over the country and we wonder why the rest of the world is leaving us behind. i didn’t say catching us. i said leaving us behind; academically and athletically. we’re behind folks. look at tennis, Golf, Baseball, track and field, and yes foreigners are all over the Nfl and NBa. the only sport that we still control is rODEO!!!! the world games are about to start. we use to dominate those Games. it won’t happen this year and any other year in the near future. that’s why we have shows like “the Biggest loser” our

kids don’t have a snow ball chance, especially the inner city kids. formerly proud programs like Carter, Kimball, s.O.C, lincoln, roosevelt, are having problems competing with lancaster, Desoto, Duncanville and other suburban schools. in the past those programs and all inner city programs survived because they got help from all those little league programs like the redskins, raiders, Jets, Comets, Dragons, to name a few. Now our city leaders are hindering that. fast food – no activities! Video games – no activities! fast food – no activities! Video games – no activities! BiGGEst lOsEr…….aMEriCa !!!!!!!!

NFL player-turned-actor Bubba Smith dies at 66 in Los Angeles Free tickets to the game just Special to Elite News

F

ormer Nfl defensive star Bubba smith, who found a successful second career as an actor, died wednesday at age 66. los angeles County coroner's spokesman Ed winter said smith was found dead at his Baldwin Hills home. winter said he didn't know the circumstances or cause of death. Pick six: Best players-turned-actors Bubba smith wasn't the first person to make the switch from football to acting. adam rank counts down the six greatest to make the transition to the silver screen. More ... Police spokesman richard french added the death doesn't appear to be suspicious. the top overall pick in the 1967 Nfl Draft after a sensational career at Michigan state, the 6-foot-7 smith spent five seasons with the Baltimore Colts and two seasons each with the Oakland raiders and Houston Oilers. He won super Bowl V with the Colts. "i'm saddened by it," Colts owner Jim irsay said. "i remember my first training camp in 1972 in Golden, Colo. i spent a lot of time with him there. He was a great guy. He was a giant, the biggest player on the field."

One of the most feared defensive ends in the game, smith often drew two blockers, yet he was effective enough to make two Pro Bowls and one all-Pro team. His best work, though, came in college, and smith was enshrined in the College football Hall of fame in 1988. "He was simply a good guy," former Michigan state teammate robert Viney said in a statement released through the university. "His size made him an intimidating figure, but he was a real gentleman. He was a helluva player." as an actor, smith's most memorable role was playing Moses Hightower, the soft-spoken officer in the "Police academy" series. smith also appeared in such television series as "Good times," "Charlie's angels," and "Half Nelson," and he was a regular in the ground-breaking Miller lite commercials featuring retired players.Born Charles aaron smith, he played in high school for his father, willie ray smith, in Beaumont, texas, before heading to Michigan state, where he was an all-american in 1966. "'Bubba' smith was a great spartan," Michigan state athletic director Mark Hollis said in a statement. "as both a football player and later as an actor, 'Bubba' was a great ambassador for the University. it's only fitting that beginning this fall the Big ten Defensive lineman of the Year award bears

his name." "i will shed some tears tonight because i've lost a great friend," Viney said. "He never sought the spotlight. He was a humble man. as i remember him, i recall the chants of "Kill, Bubba, Kill" from the crowd in spartan stadium. He will be missed."smith was part of two of the most famous football games ever played. in 1966, he was at Michigan state when the spartans and Notre Dame, both undefeated, played to a 10-10 tie. Michigan state finished second behind the top-ranked fighting irish. in 1969, smith played for the Colts against the New York Jets in the super Bowl. led by Joe Namath, the Jets of the afl upset the Nfl champion Colts 16-7 in Miami
