ow! It is hard to believe that we are about to say good-bye to the year 2010! It seems like only yesterday, we were preparing for the year 2000; the new millennium. You remember? Everybody that was anybody in the world of astrology was predicting that the world was going to end promptly at 12:01 am, January 1st 2000. Well, so much for their prediction. By the time most of our readers

(Sunday morning church goers) ron Washington receive their copy of the Elite News, the year 2011 will be well underway. At Elite News, we thought we would take a look back at 2010… The Year that Was. The Year 2010 was filled with a lot of ground-breaking, albeit shocking events! So here goes. Let’s take a look back at some of the most memorable events of the year 2010 on the National, mayor Carl sherman State and Local level. We started the year off right at Elite News with the 24th

New Years Now Is The Hour! Romans 13:11 12 "The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is henry nelson nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light."

ave you noticed that each year almost all the major news magazines put out an issue with special pictorial sections recalling people and events that made news during the previous year? Many magazines also include articles by experts predicting what they expect to see happening in the years ahead. Some even go so far as to

make predictions covering 10, 20, or more years in the future. In the past, a few of these predictions have proven amazingly accurate, while others could not have been more wrong. Back in 1967 experts predicted that by the turn of the century technology would have taken over so much of the work we do that the average American work week would be only 22 hours long and that we would work only 27 weeks a year. As a result, one of our biggest problems would be in deciding what to do with all our leisure time. Well, I do not know about you, but that prediction certainly missed the mark as far as my life was concerned! There is a passage of Scripture that I believe can be of help to us as we look forward to the rest of 2011 if we will listen to it. There is a passage in Ephesians 5:15 17 it says, "Be very careful, then, how you live not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.

Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s Will is." Amen! Your time on this earth is limited so you must be very careful how you live because of that fact. Psalms 39:4 says, "Show me, O Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life" And Psalms 90:10 says, "The length of our days is 70 years or 80, if we have the strength hey quickly pass, and we fly away" Amen! I realize that for some of you younger folk, 70 or 80 years sounds like a long, long time. In fact, I can remember when I thought anyone over 40 was ancient, but no longer. It is all rather relative, is not it? For example, for teenagers in love talking together in the car, an hour or two seems like a blink of an eye. But for mom and dad worrying about what’s going on out in that car, an hour or two seems like an eternity. Amen! Neither you nor I have a guarantee of even one day more to live. In fact the

Bible tells us not to count on tomorrow because tomorrow may not come for you or for me. All you have is right now. So your time on this earth is valuable because it is very limited. Paul tells us that you must make "the most of every opportunity and he gives a reason, "because the days are evil." Jesus said that Satan is a robber and a thief, and one of the things he tries to rob from us is our time because time is a very precious possession. Just think of the time wasted in sinning. Think of the time wasted in bars or in gambling casinos or in shallow affairs. Think of the time wasted in gossiping or spreading rumors. Think about all the time wasted worrying about the consequences of the sins we have committed. Satan is a thief and a robber! It is not just sin that makes demands on your time. Sometimes even good things can make demands. For the rest of this week’s message request it at: revelations_75044@msn.com

2010... The Year That Was, continued Annual MLK Parade and Career Festival. A parade that started with a Man, his bullhorn, a permit and a few cars, saw over 200,000 parade goers and spectators lined up and down MLK Blvd., to witness another “People’s Parade”. The parade paid tribute to its namesake, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. February, designated as Black History Month, started off with a bang as former State Representative Terri Hodge, saw her bid for re-election to the Texas State House go down the drain. “I am sad to inform you that as of today, I will end my campaign for the Democratic nomination for State Representative of the 100th Legislative District of Texas.” And with that statement, she ended a 14-year career as a State Representative from the 100th Legislative District of Texas. Then we all held our collective breaths after a phone call from Dr. Karen Hollie McGriff, informed us that her husband, Bishop Larry McGriff had been rushed to the hospital after suffer a brain aneurism. Hours later, we stopped the presses and said goodbye to our dear friend and brother, Bishop Larry D.

McGriff. We still eminence and talk about his weekly visits to Elite News, and how much we truly miss him. Dr. Blair continued his tradition of honoring people who go above and beyond with the 35th Annual Elite News Awards Night. The month of March was just as interesting as the month of February when it comes to local politicians. US Judge Barbara Lynn sentenced former Mayor Pro-Tem Don Hill to 18 years in federal prison and fined him $112,500 in restitution. Hill’s wife Shelia Hill was sentenced to 9 years. Also in March of 2010, President Barack H. Obama signed the healthcare bill into law; making affordable healthcare accessible to every United States citizen. We had some good news and some bad news in April of 2010. Katie Washington became the first African – American Valedictorian in the history of Notre Dame University. Then, we mourned the loss of two of this country’s greatest Civil Rights Leaders and Activists in Dr. Dorothy Height and Dr. Benjamin Hooks. Dr. Height was the leader of the National Council of Negro Women for more than 40 years, passed 5520 So. Westmoreland away at Howard University Hospital at Dallas, Texas 75237 the ripe old age of 98. Dr. Benjamin Hooks, was a practicing Attorney, and 214.339.6606 led the oldest and largest Civil Rights www.lifewaychurchofdallas.com Organization, the NAACP from 1977 – 1992. Dr. Hooks passed away at his home in Memphis, Tennessee at the age of 85. “Come And Let In May of 2010, we saw history God Use You” being made in the City of DeSoto, as Carl Sherman became the city’s first African-American

Lifeway Church

Mayor. Mr. Sherman was elected to the DeSoto City Council in 2006, and was elected to serve as Mayor Pro-Tem in 2008 by his City Council colleagues in 2008. In June of this year, we celebrated, Black Music Month and Juneteenth, when then President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing all slaves. Of course, we didn’t get the news in Texas until about 18 months later on June 19th 1865, thus the term, “Juneteenth.” In July, we celebrated “Independence Day” with firecrackers, food and fun and sadly, the City of Dallas said good-bye to longtime businesswoman and entrepreneur Ms. Reba Harrell. In August, Dr. William “Bill” Blair presented the 11th Annual Elite News Religious Hall of Fame Awards Ceremony. Dr. Blair honored 21 Ministers and Pastors for their service to God, their Church and the Community. In September of 2010, renowned Pastor and Preacher, Bishop Eddie Long faced charges of sexual assault as former male members of his congregation accused him of inappropriate sexual behavior while they were members of his congregation. In October, we paused to say “Happy Birthday” and give thanks to God for the life and legacy of our very own, Dr. William “Bill” Blair, Jr. On October 17, 2010, Dr. Blair turned 89 years young! The Texas Rangers and Manager Ron Washington made history during the month of October. For the first time in the history of the Texas Ranger’s organization, they won the American League Championship and advanced to the World Series! How ‘bout

them Texas Rangers! In November of this year, voters all over the country went to the polls to elect members to the United States Senate and the House of Representatives. The Democrats lost control of the House on the National level, while they retained control of Dallas County; while Dallas County voters sent the message they are for the sale of liquor in Dallas. Shout out to Ms. Carmina Barnett of KHVN’s Heaven 97 Radio. Carmina was nominated for a Stellar Award for outstanding radio announcer. Once again, December proved to be the most wonderful time of the year! The Elite News kicked off its first Annual “Bless a Child at Christmas” Toy and Food drive. We want to thank all of you who came out to Bill Blair’s Luby’s located at 67 and Hampton road for our breakfast held on December 18th and thanks to all of our readers and family members for the donation of unwrapped toys and non-perishable food items. Thanks to you, we were able to “Bless a Child at Christmas”. And we ask that you would consider sharing with us again on next year. This year has been filled with highs and lows and we want to pause and say “thanks” to all of our readers, our families and friends. We are so thankful for your support throughout the year, and we look forward to serving you this coming year! It is our prayer that the Lord will continue to Bless you exceedingly, abundantly above all that you ask and dare to dream of! We pray that you have a very blessed and prosperous New Year! HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM ALL OF US AT ELITE NEWS!

Advice Column: Ask Karen Hollie Change

C

hange is what we carry in our pockets to have ready at the toll booth or to drop in the slot of a soda machine. Change is what we do after working under the car, and before we go to church or out to eat in a nice restaurant. Change is what we do to the oil in the car or the light bulb over the kitchen sink. However, geraldine while we don’t mind davidson-hooker changing a dollar bill, our clothing, the oil or the light bulb, when it has to do with us personally, change seems to be much less desirable - when we begin to talk about change, the only thing we want to change is the subject. Whether we like it or not, we live in what has become a rapidly changing world. Perhaps we are willing to accept the change of the seasons, and the change of weather patterns, but everything else seems to be changing too: Jobs change, careers change, schedules change, economies change, family relationships change, neighborhoods change, roads and highways change, eating habits change, rules and regulations change, school subjects change, technologies change, theologies change. Rattled by all this change, we come to church saying, “At least here’s one thing that doesn’t change.” And then the Pastor changes the order of service and the Music Director changes the songs we sing, and the version of the Bible is no longer KJV, but NIV. Someone has facetiously quipped, “The only thing that doesn’t change is death and taxes.” Perhaps even more accurate is the saying, “The only thing that doesn’t change is change.” Why don’t we like change? Perhaps it’s fear of the unknown, or a dislike with being dislodged from our comfort – certainly, change can be stressful and frustrating. On the other hand, when we come to the beginning of a new year there’s a lot of emphasis on those things people want to change – bad habits are renounced, and new habits put in their place. Of course much of this has to do with the outer man – we want a body weight change, vow to do more exercise, and hope to stop smoking, etc. - although some may include more spiritual matters in their New Year’s commitment to change – read the Bible from cover to cover, pray every day, increase church attendance, etc.. In Paul’s writings, we learn that “old things are passed away, behold all things are become new.” That sounds like change to me! But the point of this Scripture has little to do with the changes we want to bring about for ourselves, but rather the change that happens when we come to Christ. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away behold all things are become new.” (KJV)

ast week we were reminded that every man who is honest with his inner self somehow believes in God. However, there comes a time in the life of most of us, when we want “Sensible Proof” of the existence of God. Well, we ought to go out on a clear night, stare into space, and see the majestic of God’s handy work. Pastor ClarenCe King David must henderson have done that when he sang; “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handy work”. Day by day his speech is uttereth, and night by night, His knowledge is shown. There is no speech or language, where their voice is not heard. Their line is gone out through all the earth and their words to the end of the world. (Psalms 19:1-4) David was satisfied with knowing that God is.

“Watch Night Services” – New Year’s Eve For Black Communities In 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln announced that the Emancipation Proclamation would take effect Jan. 1, freeing all slaves in Confederate states, abolitionists and slaves reportedly gathered together on what was called “Freedom’s Eve” to await and watch what the new year would bring. This act would eventually become known as Watch Night. Many black churches even continue the tradition of reading the Emancipation Proclamation during the ceremony. Will you be attending a “Watch Night Service”.

hat ever Jason Garrett did to re vitalize the Cowboys, they forgot it Saturday. They’ve been mathematically eliminated from the leon simon play offs for sometime for some time. That game against the Cardinals could have eliminated Jason from head coach consideration, they seem to slip back into the team that got Wade Phillips fired. This team seems intent doing its own thing, they’re determined to have end zone celebrations that the league frown on. Marion Barber must have thought he was playing with a team that had a

December 31, 2010

BarBerShOP talk with leON SimON defense, that could hold a lead. Anyone watching this team this season knows this team can not hold a lead in the fourth quarter regardless the opponent. Jason did a miraculous job of changing the culture and attitude of this team. As a matter of fact there’s and old saying “ attitude, not aptitude determines your altitude”. But this is the National Football League, talent is still the thing that keeps this league above any other football played any where. And this team is as void of talent on defense, as Texas is of rain at this point in time. It is no secret in order to build a defense in most American sports you start by building the middle. Baseball Catcher, shortstop, second base and centerfield. If you’re strong in those positions you can play pretty good defense in baseball. In football you start

at nose guard ( in 3 man line ) 2tackles in a four man front. Middle linebacker and safety. Weakness in those positions, you want be able to hold a lead even in your own practices. Jay Ratliff, is an excellent football player, I don’t know how well he playing in this system. He’s drawing double teams in the line. As a nose tackle should. Brady James and Keith Brookings get knocked of the ball so far until their uniform number is the only thing that let you know that they’re not safeties. Allen Ball and Gerald Sensabaugh, like wise their uniform numbers are the only thing they have to make you think they’re safeties, certainly not their play. There is enough traffic that goes the middle of the Cowboys defense to label it a toll way. I fell to mention the three blind mice, Terrence Newman, Mike Jenkins and

www.dfwelitenews.com

Orlando Scandrick. I used to think there were requirements to play sports. But I see guys playing baseball that can’t catch or hit, I see guys in the NBA that can shoot, dribble, or play defense, then in football you find defensive backs that can’t cover, catch ,or tackle. The most amazing think about the NFL especially the Dallas Cowboys, how can you find a them full of defensive backs that none of them can do any of these things catch, cover, or tackle. The linebackers have the same short comings catch, cover or tackle. In the event the Boyz whould have made it to the play offs, how long could they stay there with this big freeway running right up the middle of this defense. And four defensive backs to escort you to the end zone with out any bodily harm.

deliver by Pastor Lloyd Morgan from the subject “You have circled your mountain long enough” Deut 2:1-3. "Turn northwards” These were the words which the Lord spoke to Moses, after the children of Israel had been compassing or going around Mount Seir "many days." There are a great many "mountains" which many people "compass" in the present day. Some of them mountains of doubt and difficulty and sin; some of them molehills, some of them little hills of pride and obstinacy "Turn you northward" is the command required. Anything is better than going round and round and coming to the same place again. "Northward" may mean hard fighting, but it will also mean great victory. Not only has he ransomed them but he promises to protect them through the deep waters of trouble, through rivers of circumstances, even through fiery trials, he promised to be with them. rollin with a Brotha

W

elcome to the weekend, baaaaby and Happy New year! 2010 was a trip, I am sooo looking forward to an awesome 2011! Reports that Aretha Franklin has passed are not true as of press time. The Internet kevan BroWning was full of rumors a couple of days ago about the "Queen Of Soul's" demise. Franklin, who's suffering from pancreatic cancer, is recovering at her Detroit area home... This week we lost Teena Marie, one of the purest Soul singers in the history of music and Bernie Wilson, who was the smooth baraitone of Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. The teena marie 64 year old Mr. Wilson suffered a stroke and heart attack at his New Jersey residence, while Ms. Marie died at her Pasadena California home of "natural" causes. I remember when she and Rick James came thru at the Coca Cola Starplex a few years ago and shut it down... She was incredible. Last year at Citadel Media Network, we were treated to Ms. Marie performing with just a guitar and her pure as a bell voice...R.I.P. and hold on , Aretha! Looking back on 2010, I reflected on "who made the money"? Which entertainers really balled out? #1 is of course Oprah Winfrey, banking a cool 315 Million, whie Avatar director James Cameron raked in 210 Million. A little further down on the list, although far from gub'ment housing was Beyonce at 87 Million and her hubby Jay-Z(Number 1 Hip Hop earner) at 63 Million...Like whoa! Ya know, it's one thning to make money, another to hold on to it! Here's who held on and their net worth over the years:It is widely known that the wealthiest Black person in America is television talk-show diva Oprah Winfrey. No one else even comes close. Winfrey had reached a net worth of $2.7 billion. Despite a disastrous year in golf and a divorce, second place still goes to golfer Tiger Woods. However,

www.dfwelitenews.com

Woods was projected to have reached billionaire status this year. It did not happen. We estimate Woods lost $200 million in endorsement money due to his much publicized infidelities leaving him with a net worth of somewhere between $650 million and $700 million. The third richest Black person in America is most probably former basketball great Earvin “Magic” Johnson. Johnson’s wealth has come mostly from restaurants, movie theaters and real estate is about $500 million. The number four position goes to another former basketball great turned entrepreneur Michael Jordan. Jordan still pulls in major endorsement money and had sufficient bank to be part of the deal which purchased the Charlotte Bobcats of the NBA from BET founder Bob Johnson. Jordan has estimated wealth of $475 million. The fifth richest Black person in America is Black Entertainment Television founder Bob Johnson – the nation’s first Black billionaire. Johnson walked away with a bundle when he sold BET to media giant Viacom and is worth $450 million. #6 – William “Bill” Cosby – $425 million#7 – Sheila Johnson – ex-wife of BET founder Bob Johnson and owner of the Washington Mystics of the WNBA – $400 million #8 – R. Donahue Peeples – head of the largest Black-owned real estate development firm in the nation – $350 million #9 – The legendary Barry Gordy is Black America’s ninth richest person. The 80-year-old sold Motown Records Company in 1988 for $61 million and since became involved in movies and other entertainment ventures building an estimated wealth of $320 million. #10 – The top ten is rounded out by another real estate giant: Chicago’s Quintin Primo III. The 57-year-old Harvard business school graduate has wealth of $300 million. Remember, Quintin Primo iii you may not be financially rich, but still rich...Think about it and Happy New Year! Happy Birthday to YOU and Celebs this week: Mary Tyler Moore is 73, Donna Summer is 62, Yvonne Eliman is 57, Denzel Washington is 56, Laila Ali 33 and Tiger Woods is 31! Thanks for "Rollin With A Brotha" since 2003 in the Elite News and online at www.dfwelitenews.com!
