Super Bowl History by: LoLa searcy Despite the bad weather, and the lawsuit filed by some 1,250 fans who bought tickets for Super Bowl XLV and were not able to take

their designated seats; and despite the controversy surrounding Mayor Pro-Tem Dwaine Caraway presenting the Keys to the City of Dallas to Philadelphia Eagles, Quarterback Michael Vick, something that despite the negative connotations, I feel it was a good thing to do.

Mayor Pro-Tem Caraway has always been a person who has been conc e r n e d about the kids. Doing something positive for the kids has always been on Mayor Pro-Tem Caraway’s agenda. His bread has always been buttered on the side of the kids. You can say what you want about Mayor Pro-Tem Caraway, but I believe it was his intent to show young men and women that we

How Christians Should Celebrate Valentine’s Day

alentine’s Day is quickly coming for those who are not aware of it.

A friend of mine will take his wife to Wal-Mart they will stand together in the greeting cards section and he will read the Valentine Cards to her. Now, that seems to work fine for him, but I doubt that many men could get away with that. Have you ever wondered how Valentine’s Day got started?

When Is Each Day Valentine’s Day? For those who are not aware of it

Valentine’s Day is quickly coming. A friend of mine will take his wife to WalMart they will stand together in the greeting cards section and he will read the Valentine Cards to her. Now, that seems to work fine for him, but I doubt that many men could get away with that.

Have you ever wondered how Valentine’s Day got started?

Approximately 250 years after Jesus was born in Bethlehem, there was a priest by the name of Valentine.

He lived in Rome. At that time, Claudius was the Emperor of Rome.

Some people called him Claudius the Cruel. St. Valentine did not like Emperor Claudius and he was not the only one! Many people felt the same way. Claudius wanted a big army. He thought men should volunteer to join.

Many men just did not want to leave home and go off to fight in wars. They did not want to leave their girlfriends and wives. So, not many men volunteered for the Roman army. This made

Emperor Claudius very angry. He had a crazy idea that if men were not married, they would be more inclined to join his army. So Claudius decreed that there would be no more marriages.

Young people thought his new law was really cruel. Valentine thought it was ridiculous! One of his favorite duties as a priest was to marry people. After Emperor Claudius passed his law, Valentine kept on performing marriage ceremonies, but secretly. He would whisper the words of the ceremony, while listening for soldiers on the steps outside.

One night, Valentine did hear footsteps at his door. The couple he was marrying escaped, but he was caught.

He was thrown in jail and told that his punishment was death. St. Valentine tried to stay cheerful. Many young people came to the jail to visit him. They threw flowers and notes up to his window. They wanted him to know that they, too, believed in love.

was the daughter of the prison guard.

Her father allowed her to visit him in his cell. They often sat and talked for hours. She believed he did the right thing by ignoring the Emperor and performing marriage ceremonies.

On the day Valentine was to die, he left her a note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. He signed it, "Love from your Valentine." That note started the custom of exchanging love notes on Valentine’s Day. It was written on the day he died, February 14, 269 A.D. Now, every year on this day, people remember. But most importantly, they think about love and friendship.

When they think of Emperor Claudius, they remember how he tried to stand in the way of love, and they laugh because they know that love can’t be beaten!

Black History Month: What do you think Carter G. Woodson Intended? by: LoLa searcy

S

ince 1976, every February, in the United States and in Canada, we pause to celebrate Black History Month. When Carter G. Woodson started Negro History Week in 1926, his purpose was for the history of African Americans to become considered a more significant part of American history as a whole and to educate Blacks about their cultural background, and to instill in them a sense of pride in their race. According to historian John Hope Franklin, Woodson “continued to express hope that Negro History Week would outlive its usefulness”.

I have often pondered in my mind why we as a people always go out of our way every February to celebrate the accomplishments of prominent African Americans. At church services all over this city, state and country and at school districts all over this state and country pictures of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, George Washington Carver, Leotyne Price, Mahalia Jackson, Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson, Garrett Morgan, Dr. Charles Drew, Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, Tiger Woods, Thurgood Marshall and since 2008 President Barack Obama, just to name a few can be found hanging in church sanctuaries and on bulletin boards in classrooms all over this country.

But, it seems that once, the month of February comes to an end, the posters, pictures and facts come down and we go back to business as usual.

Some scholars argue that, “Black History Month has become a ready made excuse to ignore African American history for the other 11

months of the year”, thus promoting racism. And while, I am appreciative of Carter Woodson’s vision and I will forever be grateful to him for the role he played in African American history, but I have to say that I agree with critics who say that some of us(African Americans/Blacks) do have a tendency to ignore our history the other 11 months of the year.

It’s as if February is the only time we are proud of our heritage and who we are. Its like for one month out of every year, Americans are given permission to commemorate the achieve-

ments of black people. This rather condescending view fails to acknowledge that a people and a country’s past should be nurtured and revered; instead, at this time, the past of black Americans is handled in an expedient and cavalier fashion denigrating the very people it seeks to honor.

and make history to the extent that it would be a part of our everyday life.

That’s my hope. I hope that everyday African Americans/Blacks would rush to their classrooms and absorb all the knowledge they can and they take that knowledge to their homes and into their communities and make this world a better place in which to live.

You see, what I have come to discover is that the whole world is made the better when we as African Americans remember and recognize each and everyday who we are and from whence we came. So, let’s take a page from the McDonald’s commercials that run during Black History month every year. The slogan is 365 Days Black.

Great African Americans are being born everyday; not just in February and that being the case, we should remember and celebrate our Blackness, our African American heritage everyday!

What did Carter G. Woodson intend when he started Negro History Week? I think his intentions were to expose and share our rich heritage with the world and by doing so this world we live in would be all the better because it would be all our history, not just Negro History.

So, as we began another year of celebrating Black History/African American History Month, don’t limit what we teach our children about our heritage and our history to just one month! Apply it to our everyday lives and live and behave like the Kings and Queens God created us to be!

Super Bowl History... continued from front page all make mistakes, but mistakes don’t have to make us! You can slay the messenger, but don’t slay the message. It is a message about redemption and that’s a message always worthy of sharing.

And despite all of the things that went wrong, history was being made at Dallas Cowboys Stadium on Super Bowl Sunday.

That history making moment came when Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin, jogged out onto the field with his football team. Tomlin, at the tender age of 38, became the first African American NFL Head Coach to coach in his second Super Bowl championship game.

Coach Tomlin’s history making journey begin in 2001, when Tomlin, who has never played professional football, got his start in the NFL when he was hired as the defensive backs coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers under then Head Coach Tony Dungy, where he first learned the Tampa 2 defense that he would use in later coaching jobs.

And on Sunday, February 6th sports fans all over the world watched the game hoping to see if Coach Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers would soar again into the history books winning their 7th Super Bowl title, and Tomlin would become the first African American NFL Head Coach to win 2 Super Bowl titles.

But, his second Super Bowl title was not to be, as the Green Bay Packers upset the Pittsburgh Steelers by a score of 31-25, earning the Green Bay Packers their 2nd Super Bowl title. But the history books will record Tomlin’s appearance in Super Bowl XLV as the first time an African American NFL Head Coach had coached for a second Super Bowl title.

As we celebrate and highlight the accomplishments of African Americans during Black History Month, we thought it would be fitting and appropriate to share Coach Mike Tomlin’s story with our readers.

“taste test” - brandy alexander cheesecake Ingredients: Crust: 18 chocolate graham cracker boards 1 tablespoon sugar 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted Filling: 4 packages (8 ounces each) cream cheese, softened 1-1/4 cups sugar 3 tablespoons cornstarch 4 eggs 3 tablespoons brandy 3 tablespoons creme de cacao Garnish: 1/2 cup heavy cream 1 tablespoon sugar Chocolate-covered coffee beans, if desired

Make It: 1. Heat oven to 325 degrees F. 2. Crust: In food processor, pulse graham crackers until fine crumbs are formed. Add sugar and butter; pulse until crumbs are moistened. Press into

3. Filling: In a large bowl, beat cream cheese until smooth, about 1 minute. Add sugar and cornstarch; beat on mediumhigh speed until creamy, about 3 minutes. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add brandy and creme de cacao; beat until smooth. Pour filling into crust.

4. Bake at 325 degrees F until edge of cheesecake is just set and center slightly jiggles, 60 to 70 minutes.

Transfer to wire rack. Run a thin knife around inside edge of pan. Let cool completely. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

5. Garnish: Remove side of pan. Whip heavy cream and sugar to stiff peaks.

Use to garnish cheesecake.

Scatter with chocolate-covered coffee beans.

n John 9:4 Jesus tells of his own personal purpose and what He must do, but more than that gene tuner He gives us direction of what we should be about who will be with Him in the Kingdom. This is a declaration, which identifies work of the Christian and its purpose.

We are all called by God to do a certain work within Kingdom building, but we must recognize that calling and respond to it by working the works of Him who sends us out. The next part of this statement: “ While it is day,” suggests to us that there are restrictions as to the time we have to do this work. When we look at the word “Day”: speaking in the context it means opportunity.

You see, we only have the opportunity to do a lot of things during daylight hours, seeing without obstructions.

Daylight hours only last for a certain time during a 24-hour period, so, it is important that we work diligently while the sun is up in order that we might be able to see what we are doing. You see when things are going well with us, we must not forget that things will not always be well, there will be some dark hours, so, we should do all we can while we are able to do them. You know, we are always tempted to forget what comes after a sunny “Day”. We forget that the sun will not always be high in the sky and always shining.

Once the day is gone it cannot be recalled again, so, we must work as much as we can that Day. Our lives will not go on forever, so we must work His will while we have the opportunity to work His works. Too many good deeds

go undone, many kind words go unsaid, too many great potentials go untested, and simply because of opportunities we failed to capitalize on.

Many of us misuse our sunlight. We simply waste sunlight being idle. Today will never be again, it cannot be recalled, so we must work while it is “Day”: Jesus makes this statement so as to bring about a sense of urgency to our minds, it was meant to be a challenge to us that we might understand the importance of doing the best we can while we can. Our potential to serve depends upon the willingness to take advantage of opportunities.

We as Laymen in the church should work to save our young men while we have the opportunity to do so. You know what most of us think? We think working in the church is the work we should be doing. Yes, we should work in the church, but let us not get it mixed up with the work of the church.

You hear people say things like, “ sing for the Lord child”, She/he should not be singing for the Lord, the Lord does not need your singing, and He needs your willingness to work his works.

Whatever we do in the church or on the church grounds should be for praise only. When we give praise to God on Sunday morning, because that’s the only time some of us go anyway – that’s what we should do to let God know that we appreciate what He has already done for us as an individual. That’s not working for God that’s praising God. When you help someone who cannot help him or herself or when you lead others to Christ, then we are working while it is “Day”. When night cometh no man can work. Night means Days end. It’s going to come no matter what happens. Our day will end some dark night, so, let’s work while it is “Day”!

Let us not forget to read our Bibles.

May God bless you real good, and may He ever keep you in His loving care.

By next week, thousands of New Year's resolutions will be broken or forgotten. Intentions are good, but if the reform doesn't take place the resolutions are irrelevant.

This past year has been a difficult time for Christians as a minority group in America. Many of our Christian freedoms have been taken away to protect the freedoms of the most radical element in our society.

However frustrating and disheartening this may be from the outward appearance, we need to rejoice inwardly that God is working His plans to completion and these trials will actually cause God's people to look more to Him and less to other's efforts.

We are seeing more cooperation between ministries and God's people than I've seen in my lifetime.

And I believe that unity is an important factor in riding through this time of change in America. God's people are ultimately going to be the victors.

No matter how good the intentions to change bad to good, we have to first be cleansed from within, as today's Scripture verse says.

This applies to many areas of our lives. God's people must start trusting Him more.

As you welcome in the New Year, get your eyes off of yourself and your circumstances and look forward with hope for God's mercy and grace. He is our ultimate resource.

One thing that has always stood out to me during the short time that I have known him is the approach he has taken towards children. Instead of working against them, I admire his position on trying to work with them. From the Dallas Youth Council to the National Civil Rights Museum Trip to Dallas Art Festivals, Mr. Caraway helps underprivileged kids realize their potential and the opportunities that lie above their limited perspectives and reveal to them the opportunities to become successful in this world.

Children in Mr. Caraway's district face issues on a daily basis that are starkly different than the issues faced by children in other parts of Dallas, Texas, and across our nation. Mr. Caraway's vision serves as a light that can be carried not only to other cities facing the same problem, but to families in how they respond to their own children.

Whether parents realize it or not, children notice everything adults do.

Micheal Vick's story of redemption is inspirational and motivating - which is just what some of America's children need.

It is a story that exposes the lie that our present circumstances dictate our future and are beyond our control.

Michael Vick's story is one that reflects Christian values and the ways in which one can endure trials and overcome difficulties and remove themselves from a life of sinful and criminal activity.

I want to thank Mr. Caraway for taking initiative and utilizing Micheal Vick's story to inspire children in the City of Dallas and show them the possibilities the future can hold. ebruary is the shortest month in the year, and it has been labeled as Black History Month. In 1926 Carter G. Woodson initiated the month of February and established it as Black History Month. He chose the month of February because Abraham Lincoln’s birthday was celebrated on February 12, and the accepted birthday of February 14 was Fredrick Douglas’ birthday. Therefore, February has been established to be Black History Month.

Carter G. Woodson was a member of the Association for Negro Life and History, and most of the history and facts he gathered started with the history within the Black Church, so we thought it would be important to explore the early history of Black Churches.

The oldest organized Black Church is the African Methodist Episcopal Church that was started by Richard Allen, when he split from the Methodist church, realizing that the Whites wouldn’t let Blacks worship with them.

The majority of the Black Churches established here within the United States and abroad today is based on the structure set up

by Richard Allen and the AME Church.

Anywhere that one goes in the country, town, state, etc., you can find any one of the Black churches in the community, family tree, business within the community, etc.

The AME Church started in 1787 and was actually organized in 1821. The first African American Baptist Church was started in 1859 in Savannah, Georgia. In New York, members withdrew from the Johnston Methodist Church to form the Zion Church in 1801. In 1821 Blacks went on to form the AME Church.

All of the church groups were formed in the North. Most American blacks resided in the South. In the South, whites usually refused to allow Blacks separately in church.

In some areas, Blacks couldn’t even assemble for worship. In areas where blacks did worship, they worshipped with the Whites. The church at Cane Ridge built a balcony and Black people climbed a ladder to it from outside.

The United Methodist Church is the largest Methodist denomination and the second largest Protestant denomination in the United States next to the Catholic Church.

The United Methodist Church traces its main roots to the Methodist movement of John Wesley in England in the 1700s. The first official organization in the United States occurred in Baltimore in 1784 with the founder of the Methodist Episcopal Church at the Christmas Conference.

Following the inception of the Methodist Churches came the Baptist Church; the strong Southern Baptist Church; the Catholic Church;

the Church of the Living God; the Pentecostal Church; the Church of Christ; the Church of God in Christ; the Christian Church; Jehovah’s Witnesses; and the Apostolic Church, etc. The formation of the Black Church stemmed from a strong desire for the slaves and other blacks to get together to worship to express their Christian beliefs. Some had very strict slave masters who did not want them to worship God or pray, or anything. They had to sneak off; go in their secret corners; some could not be caught reading the Bible. For one thing, they didn’t even know how to read, unless some nice person of the other color persuasion taught them how to read, and then one of them would teach the others how to read, and it went on and on. They worked in the fields from the dawn of day to later in the day.

One could hear them sing in the fields because they had strong, deep voices, and they could belt out some tunes. At times you could hear them singing the old Negro spirituals, like, “Pray for me,” “I was Way Down Yonder By Myself and I couldn’t Hear Nobody Pray,” “The Old Rugged Cross,” or sometimes they would just hum, but they still made it thru and God took care of them.

It is understood that Mt. Pisgah is the oldest recognized Black Church in Dallas County. And St Paul AME White Rock is understood to be the next oldest, but never the less in the Black community the Black church is

the holder of most history and this is something that must not be taken lightly.

As stated earlier in this article Black History is in the Black Church. It appears for the last 40 years until recently with the election of our First African American and 44th President Barack Obama that we as blacks have rested on history’s past. We have been content to recite history but not progressing to rewrite history. As with the NAACP, the SCLC and many other organizations of the light African American progress, growth, and education are rooted in the church with universities such as Wilberforce Tuskegee, Morris Brown, Lane College and Miles College just to name a few. It is incumbent upon African American as a people to start planning our progress and progress on our plan.

As Blacks come out of slavery and into freedom we’ve progressed socially, educationally, financially, at a rate of 3 to 1 over whites who had a 300 year head start. However with the coming of civil rights and integration for blacks we have fallen to a philosophy of sitting in rather than getting ahead. This generation and generations to come will be better suited with teaching our children family history and about self that they may have a personal pride rather than product pride. When we take all of our struggles, trials, and family back to church we get a better since of from whence we came.

uper Bowl 45 is in the books. The question before the house now is, did the DFW do a good job and will there be anothLeon siMon er?

The biggest negative of course was the weather, that shouldn’t be a negative because that was nation wide.

Let’s look at the weather. The NFL is considering New York City. You tell me how many years it’s been since there wasn’t snow in New York City the first weekend in February? They’ve already had one in Detroit, although it’s an indoor stadium as does Dallas. It snowed big time in Detroit. And it will snow again next year and the year after. Snow comes with February in most northern states.

The NFL’s collective bargaining agreement is up this year. One of the sticking points will be the owners want to add two games to the schedule.

That will move the Super Bowl game deeper into winter.

The last time I attended a Super Bowl was in Atlanta Ga. When I arrived the Monday prior to the game it was 18 degrees. Although that was an indoor stadium it never got above freezing.

I think most of the nay saying I’ve heard has come from the home folks.

It’s disturbing to me to have so many people live in an area and never like or agree on anything that happens in that area! They don’t like any of the teams

in the area and they even root against the local High Schools. That’s one reasons that stadium is in Arlington instead of Dallas. I’ve even heard one guy say that Dallas won’t get another Super Bowl because the people in Dallas don’t know how to drive on ICE. There is no such animal skilled in the art of driving on ICE. I feel that whatever it takes, we as a community should get together and solve whatever problems we have. The Super Bowl brings from one to five hundred million to an area. That’s in a time when the economy is dragging.

The powers that be will be trying to get Super Bowl Fifty back here with all of the financial woes we have in the Metroplex, a five hundred million dollar boost to the economy every five years should get you on your feet pretty fast.

There are some people who don’t think Stadiums bring money to the area. I beg to differ. If by any means necessary that Stadium would have been built in the Fair Park area, there is no way that area would not prosper.

When the Astrodome was built in Houston, the area around it and farther south was all woods. Now that part of Houston could quite possibly have more people than the city of Fort Worth or Austin.

I would venture to say the midcities will be as large as Fort Worth in ten years, I include Mansfield in that.

If by chance you have the opportunity to vote on a rail system to go through those areas please do. It’ll benefit you in the long run and that’s the only thing I found wrong last week.

In keeping with Black History Month they preeLD LLoyD t. sented a skit of Morgan many African Americans that have displayed their talents and made contributions to society. We want our youth to realize that they can be more than a sports figure or entertainer. To complete the morning we held baptismal service after Sunday school for our newest teen-age member. Our Church school lesson was “Declared by Peter” Matt.16:13-27 it took us to where Jesus asked the disciples “who did men say He was”, and finally “Who do you say I am”. There is a great blessing in knowing who Jesus is, often if we are not mindful as believer we will

assume that everyone knows who Jesus is and miss opportunities to witness. The people like so many today had their own idea of who he was but missed the opportunity for salvation because they never got to know him.

Peter’s confession of faith that Jesus is the Christ the son of the living God is the foundation upon which the church is built. Our Morning message was delivered by out esteemed pastor Eld.L.T.Morgan from the Subject “Problems: God’s chisel”; Rom. 8:2829. We were reminded that” God don’t make no junk” and everyone that comes into the world have a God given purpose for being. Many go through life never knowing their purpose because they never surrender their lives to God and allow him to bring out the best in them. Have you ever wondered “why am I here?” why was I born? How do you know that there is not someone great inside you? But you may never achieve that greatness if you will not let God into your life.

Fields, Superintendent Leonard Pastor of the Greater Mt. Olive C.O.G.I.C. for 47 years, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 7, 2011 peacefully at his home. He was a graduate of Bishop College with a Bachelor degree in Theology. He served as Superintendent of the Greater Mt. Olive District in the Texas Northeast First Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction, member of the Greater Oak Cliff Fellowship Association, the West Dallas Ministerial Alliance and the West Dallas Weed and Seed Program. A distinguished preacher and teacher of God's Word. He was survived by a devoted wife, Barbara J. Fields, three sons and two daughters Leonard Earl, Bobby Clifton, Paul Edward, and Terri Louise
