Be A Real Friend To A Friend

henry nelson known to you.“

"No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made

O

ne of the most severe epidemics of our time is loneliness. Though most of us are surrounded by people, we live in a society of loneliness. Everyone, from little children to aging seniors experience feelings of isolation, rejection and seclusion. We often think of single people who live alone as being lonely, but some of the loneliest people I have known have been married with a house full of children. There are two types of loneliness: The first, there is Social loneliness. This occurs when you are isolated from your

families and friends. The second and the worse there is Emotional loneliness. This is the most common type of loneliness. It occurs when you feel you have no one to share your deepest concerns, no one who truly understands your struggles or your joys. Every human being needs friendships on two different levels. You need Horizontal friendships. You need deep meaningful friendships with other people. The proverb says, “A man who has friends must himself be friendly.” In other words, you have to work on building friendships. I have a question for you. Do you work on building friendships with others or let it happen? You also need a Vertical friendship. The second part of our verse says, "There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother." That friend is Jesus Christ. Unless you have a personal friendship with Jesus, you will never escape loneliness. Exodus 33:11 says, “So the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend.” Amen! This week I want to give you a Path for lasting friendships. Now let us look at some of the characteristics of genuine friendship. What I learned is friends listen. Genuine friends have open ears.

Many people are self-centered. They only want to talk about themselves. They do not listen when you speak; because they are too busy thinking of what they will say next. A true friend will listen when you speak. He wants to understand how you feel and what concerns you. Jesus listens to us because Jesus is our friend, He listens to us. Psalm 91:15 says, “He shall call upon Me and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him.” Isaiah 65:24 says, “It shall come to pass that before they call, I will answer; and while they are still speaking, I will hear.” Amen! Luke 11:9 says, “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” Amen! learned that friends share interests. Genuine friends always find common ground with us. Though you may have friends with whom you have no common interest, your best friends have something in common with you. Jesus is your friend because; He sought common ground with us. Jesus found common ground by becoming one of us. He loved us so much He became one of us. Philippians 2:7 says, “He made Himself of

no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.”Amen! Genuine friends protect and always look out for us. My friend Ron says, “A friend is one who walks in when others walk out.” Amen! Jonathan was a genuine friend to King David. When Jonathan’s father, Saul, planned to kill David, Jonathan warned him and helped him escape. You may ask how do good friends protect us? They know how to keep private things private. Proverbs 17:9 says, “He who covers a transgression seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates friends.” Proverbs 16:28 says, “A perverse man sows strife, and a whisperer separates the best of friends.” Amen! What I have also learned is a real friend will not allow others to speak badly of us. I recently read of a mother who slapped another mother because she made fun of her handicapped child. If necessary, they fight for us. Jesus is our friend, he protects us.

Not Dead – Alive & Spending My Day By ester Davis, eDtv

S

everal months ago, an article surfaced in Ebony Magazine that lighted a firefight as cold as the winter storm that grac-ed our presence super bowl week. Kevin Powell wrote “Black ester Davis Leadership is Dead”, and the internet is full of the reasons why. Reading several comments and blogs, I totally disagreed with the opinions, and the senseless rationales. Black leadership and all its followers are simply spending their monies outside their race which is causing death in our communities and we do not need leadership for that. That is an individual decision made on a day-to-day basis. My second opinion is that the wrong word is being used here. “Dead” is a complete stand along word in a “lane” all by itself. We are quite alive. Our worth as a nation of people verifies that fact.

The clear denominator is estimated at around a trillion dollars in spending power. There are “five fast lanes”, to-wit, arrogance, jealousy, inflated pride, decaffeinated and caffeinated blatant lies. Let me do include bloated egos. I do not have a problem with egos, they are necessary in some camps, but do buy yourself some class. Now you can argue the point that there is no relationship here between the two, but that would require more time than I have. Adequate black leadership demands adequate black dollars. I just have one question for you. How can you reasonable ‘tackle these issues’ without the economics that is required to propel them? I do agree with Willie Muhammad, Guest Columnist, The Final Call. “We criticize, critique and find fault in those on the front line before we offer to them our expertise, skills, knowledge and support free of doubt and suspicion”. He continued by adding that –“I searched the internet looking for articles where members of other ethnic groups have declared their leadership is dead and could not find one”. I decided to do my

own research, as usual, and he was positively correct. The question here is why do we automatically do this? Media and money are identical twins, close first cousins, great passionate lovers. They are the largest and most powerful medians on the planet. They are the seat of influence. Our media toward each other should be more supportive of our black leadership and our money should be spent to end the boycott we started on black businesses. Just imagine. With business owners in our midst, we could lower unemployment, reduce prison recidivism, keep our colleges opened and financially sound. And, most importantly, establish an agenda for black leadership. Black leadership cannot be stopped, but it can be driven. Ester Davis is a writer and a celebrated television host/producer. n the book of Mark, we find that Jesus has just finished feeding the mulgene tuner titude of 5,000 people, and now he is leaving for a place called Dalmanutha. Upon His arrival He is confronted by the Pharisees and Scribes to give them a sign, so, they might have some proof. They are not sure His authority because Jesus comes on scene without any physical documents, or credentials. He has no papers of any kind. They knew no school He attended, was not declared by the Temple bigshots. The Bible says when they tried to question Him He left them. You know, that’s what we should do sometimes. Jesus says something to His disciples that really threw them off. “ He says to them, take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod. They thought He was upset because they left the bread behind. Sometimes if we do not ignore the

leaven of today’s Pharisees they will affect the whole Christian movement, not kill it, because they can’t. In today’s Churches we find Christians who are focusing on unimportant things instead of focusing on the true meaning of Christ. We have not figured out yet that Christ is everything. Some of us have been on Deacon Boards for 40 years or more, Usher Boards, Sunday School Teachers, etc. And we still have not gotten the picture like Jesus told the Disciples; you’ve been with me all along. You were with me when I feed the 4,000. I raised the dead, healed the sick, and calmed the seas. Don’t you remember? Well! Don’t you remember when you no longer see things as before since you met Jesus? Do you not understand that something’s come your way and you can’t understand why? We are trying to do it ourselves, we act like this is our battle, but it is not, it is His battle, it’s the Lord’s battle, so let’s wait on Him – He will come through for you. He died for you, He loves you. When we understand that we will have richer lives. Let’s not forget to read our Bibles, and may God Bless you real good, and may He ever keep you in His loving care.

Advice Column: Ask Karen Hollie Give From the Heart Malachi 3:8, 10 "Will a man rob God? Yet you rob Me. But you ask, 'How do we rob You?' In tithes and offerings. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house."

geralDine DaviDson-hooker

T

he principle of an offering began with Cain and Able. Abraham then demonstrated the concept of the tithe when he gave Melchizedek "a tenth of everything". But systematic tithing was not established until God gave the law to Moses (Leviticus 27:30-33). In the time of Malachi, God not only called for a return to the discipline of tithing, He also directly linked tithing to blessings and gave the ultimate challenge: "Test Me in this and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of Heaven" (Malachi 3:10). God certainly never "owes" us because of anything we do; but His Word contains a consistent call to obedience, and true obedience always results in true blessing. When Jesus died on the cross, He fulfilled the law for all who believe. And though the legalistic letter of the law has passed away, the intent of the law (which is the heart of God) remains for all time; "These laws are a shadow of the things to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ" (Colossians 2:17). The intent, or "reality," of all the law is that God is Lord over ALL areas of our life. The law teaches this truth and shows us how far short we fall of His standard. The purpose of the law was much more than teaching us to comply with a written code. The shadow contained in the written law says "Thou shalt not kill," but the reality in Christ says to not even have hatred in our heart, (Matthew 5:21-22). The shadow in the law also says "Thou shalt not commit adultery," but the reality in Christ says to even refrain from lust (Matthew 5:27-28). When we debate about the "rules" of how much and where to give, we are focused on the shadow and miss the reality of Christ - He is Lord of ALL! As we focus our eyes on Christ, we will give. We will give generously, "not reluctantly or under compulsion". We will gladly give of our time, talents, and finances to whatever need He directs. And as we give and join in His work, we will better understand His true blessings. When He is truly Lord of all, we will not simply give according to a "formula" dictated by the law; we will live under His grace and give according to the law's intent. When He is Lord, we will cease to rob God and will joyfully give our lives as we give from the heart

he Super Bowl is over. Years, months, even weeks prior to the big game, we have admired from a far great organileon siMon zations, like The Celtics, The Lakers, Steelers , Patriots etc. In this area we might have had the best organization ever. The Tex Schram, Gill Brandt Tom Landry – Dallas Cowboys. This type organization never gets in a jam. Every move is calculated, thought out, and are always for the betterment of the whole. It’s not luck that the teams I mentioned along with a few others are always in Championships; has won more Super- Bowls, World Series, and NBA Championships. In football the formula is owner, Coach, Quarterback. Those will always win all your Championships; that formula works. Every team that wins has those pieces in place. The ones that win over a period of year keep these pieces in place a long time. The ones that don’t – don’t. The Cardinals, The Raider’s The Bills, for what ever reason can’t keep those pieces in place long; thus they have a few good seasons then back to mediocrity. Your Texas Rangers, your Dallas Mavericks. All of the top teams have a plan and they work it. You would think this would be the year for the Mavs, but you can’t let the Lakers make block buster moves and you stay pat.

The day after all the accolades went out to Pittsburgh and Green Bay, The Rangers are concerned about Michael Young and how he feels about making upwards of Sixteen Million and being a designated hitter. If this was a well thought out plan, Mike is being compensated well. Who cares what he thinks. They say he’s one of the team’s leaders and there’s nothing wrong with any of that. But where has his leadership taken you? The Rangers missed out on several trades because they didn’t want to part with Rusty Greer. Are the Rangers management in it for personal relationships or Championships? A good team can generally do without any one player. The year after Jimmie Brown retired, Leroy Kelly lead the league in rushing. If the Brown’s did without arguably the best player ever, the Rangers can do without Michael Young. If this was a well thought out plan. If not that’s why up until last year they had season tickets in the cellar. When the 49ers thought it was a benefit to the team they let Joe Montana and Jerry Rice go. Nolan Ryan is the face of this team, but no season did he win 15 games. So the Rangers didn’t just get in to personal relationships, it’s been a long standing thing. Now you know why Tex, Tom and Gil won the championships. What did the Rangers win with that mentality? They won the same problems every year. And some sympathetic fans, but after going as far as they did last year that same old song and dance wouldn’t work again.

Notes From Union Hope This past week and even as I write this Union Hope is preparing for the Home going services of Brother Fred Benson the husband of Sis. Gerraine Benson. On Saturday we laid Sis. elD lloyD t. Benson’s Sister, Morgan Sis. Charlie Ann Roney Ray to rest, we ask all the prayer warriors to remember this family in prayer. Our church school lesson “This is my Beloved” Mark 9:2-13. Jesus took his inner circle Peter, James, and John with him to a high mountain where they were allowed to get a glimpse of the glory that Jesus had before he left heaven, the text said his clothes became dazzling white, whiter than any bleach could ever get them. Then a strange thing happened they looked and saw Moses and Elijah who had

been dead for many years standing and talking with Jesus. God the father spoke out once the cloud was lifted and Moses and Elijah was gone saying “This is my beloved son, hear him”. Jesus is the end of the law and the prophets and we are to find our salvation in him. The morning message was delivered by our esteemed pastor Eld.L.T.Morgan and our hearts were moved as he spoke from the subject “KEEP YOUR HOPE ALIVE” Ps 27:1314.When everything that can go wrong in your life seems to be going wrong you must take the position that David took, he said “I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD IN the land of the living.” David believed that in spite of what his enemies was trying to do to him; in the end he would see the goodness of the Lord in his life time. He had to believe it in spite of what was presently happening. Faith in God’s love and ability to deliver from any circumstance is the assurance of the believer. Keep your hope alive! Be Blessed

little known Black history By: Bettye williaMs “katt”

February is Black History Month. Today's moment concerns the role of the church and religion in African-American history. The church throughout the history of black people in America, religion has played a significant role. Even today, the black church is the center of activity for many African-Americans. Religion was used to rationalize slavery and most all Christian sects sanctioned slavery. Authors of African-American History noted: "Servants, obey your masters," was a familiar text in many pulpits. Plantation owners forbid the practice of African religions because drums figured prominently in those services. While conversion to Christianity was tolerated, some owners did not want their slaves to read the Bible. They feared the slaves would learn of the equality in its teachings february 18, 2011

Welcome to the weekend baaaby! If the city feels a little empty, particularly your cultural Soul, there is good reason... The passing of Gwen Hargrove at The Black Academy of Arts and Letters is a blow to all who kevan Browning love the arts... Gwen was funeralized last weekend at First Baptist of Hamilton Park. Those who knew Gwen will want to attend "The Community memorial Tribute" on Sunday march 6th at 5P.M. Gwen Hargrove was strong, intuitive and quite brilliant in her commitment to the growth of TBAAL. Her eyes gwen could pierce you, but her ready hargrove smile was lavished freely...and you know she had the baddest silver dreads in the DF-Dub...R.I.P. Gwen Hargrove; you set an awfully high bar for the next generation!!! The National Enquirer is reporting that O.J. Simpson was the victim of a racially-charged prison beat down by a white inmate – all because he bragged about sleeping with white women. The Enquirer story, which quoted OJ Simpson associate Bruce Fromong, claims that The Juice was beaten unconscious by a skinhead! Let's hope that this is another of those..."Enquirer" stories!!! Rap pioneer Kurtis Blow drops on what happened during his weed bust LAX Airport in Los Angeles ... "It was a very difficult situation because of the media,” he explained. “My marijuana use is a very, very personal thing for me being a minister. You know in California it is legal to have it for medical reasons. I do have it for medical reasons. A couple years back I cracked my spine surfing out at Malibu. I get these muscle

www.dfwelitenews.com

spasms. You know how it feels when you hit your funny bone? I get that all over my body because of my spine, it hits up against my nerve and it’s very, very painful. Instead of taking pain pills the doctor suggested that I use marijuana once in a while.”OK, it’s not unheard of for a doctor to prescribe the wackytobacky for medicinal purposes, especially in California. But anyone could tell you that you can’t transport it across state lines. It instantly becomes a federal crime. What’s up with that? “I was going through LAX and I had about a half a joint in my pocket,” said Blow. His case was dismissed because he had that..."Legal Weed" and a license to carry...Yo Parents...Let you kids know that they are OK...Peep this sad story of a little girls misguided dreams...Earlier this week a British college student named Claudia Aderotimi died after attempting to pursue her dream to become a Hip Hop video vixen by getting butt implants. The 20-year-old university student, who went by the stage name Carmella London, flew to Philadelphia to get silicone put in her bottom, as the British say, to enhance her curves in an illegal operation at cheap Philadelphia hotel. She paid $1600.00 and it killed her! On a positive note...hats off to the Dallas Mavericks for 1st acquiring Peja Stoyokovich a dead eye shooter, who used to give the Mav's fits when he was ballin in Sacramento and of course the return of Roddy "B" Beuabois who has not played agame this season as he roDDy BeuaBois recoverd from a broken foot! happy Birthday to YOU and celebs this week: James Earl Jones and Toni Morrison are is 80, Jim Brown is 75, Smokey Robinson is 71, Jerry Springer is 67, John Travolta is 57, Lavar Burton is 54, Ice-T is 53, Michael Jordan 48, Dr. Dre 43, Drew Bledsoe 39 and Seal is 37.
