It appears that Black entertainers were more accepted by White America throughout our history here on t his continent. Unfortunately, power has not been restored for thousands of customers. Well, for some of you, this may be working quite well. However, other homes and businesses are going without power for 2 hours or longer. That’s been my experience. Why weren’t customers notified before the rolling blackouts? Integrity Is Never Out of Season 1st Chronicles 29:17 "I know, my God, that you test the heart and are pleased with integrity."

T

his week I want to cover one aspect of the fruit of the spirit which I have not done for a long time: Integrity. Let me define integrity. Integrity is deciding to integrate your heart’s value into your daily actions. Amen! I think the key word is the first word: "deciding." Remember this please, because you do not slip into integrity. You do not accidentally one day discover that you have it. It is a decision. God places a very high value on integrity. Proverbs 22:6 says, "Better is the poor who walks in his integrity than he who is crooked, though he is rich." In other words, God places much more value on integrity than on material possessions. Integrity is one of the things

henry neLson

that makes God smile. Amen! Now, there is a gap in America. I know that because a George Gallup poll recently came out that said that one of the problems that Americans face is that of incongruent values or lifestyles. In other words, what we say as Americans and what we seek or want or do, are two totally different things." He said that for example, if you poll the average American, they would say that materialism is not important to them, and yet they want a lot of things. If you talk to a father, he would say something like "I want to spend a lot of time with my child," but he does not. If you talk to a couple, they would say something like, "I want to have intimate conversations with my spouse," but they do not. And George Gallup, as he looks across America, says that one of the problems in our United States is that what we say and what we do are not consistent in our lives. I think that Paul, when he wrote to the church at Rome, saw the same problem. He said, "No matter which way I turn, I cannot make myself to do right. I want to, but I cannot." There are many of you this week who are very frustrated, as you read this message. What you

know is right and what you do is not the same thing. You want to do right, yet there seems to be something within you, that causes what you try to do to sometimes just not come out the way you want it to. This is the path for integrity for the week. Integrity is the foundation for every relationship that we are ever going to have in life. It is the foundation for marriage. It is the foundation for a good business relationship. It is the foundation that makes you a good neighbor. Integrity is the key. Integrity has the power to build trust. Trust is what fuels a relationship. All good relationships stem and go back to a foundation of integrity. God’s word tells us that. Integrity provides: Protection less fear. Psalm 25:21 says, "May integrity and uprightness," the Proverbs 10:9 says, "The man of integrity walks securely." Proverbs 11:3says, "The integrity of the upright guides them." How can you practice integrity at home? Speak honestly. Integrity means that you are honest in your speech. Ephesians 4:15 says, "Speak the truth in the spirit of love." Proverbs 20:7 says, "It is a wonderful heritage to have an hon-

est father." Amen! Speaking honestly is better. It takes a lot of stress out of your lives. If you tell the truth you do not have to remember anything, but if you do not tell the truth, you have to remember what you said." That can be a real problem, right? Ephesians 4:15 tells us that you are to speak the truth in the spirit of love. In other words, your honesty must be in the context of love. You and I both know people that speak truth, but do not speak it with love? They grate on us. We think they have a lot of joy in blasting us. They are kind of like the Clint Eastwood’s of life. "Go ahead, make my day." They can hardly wait to tell us truth. And there is something about their spirit as they tell us this truth that just does not sit well with us. What they may be saying is true, but the attitude or the spirit in which they say it is not clothed with love or kindness, and it certainly is not taking the high road. And God’s word tells us to speak truth with the spirit of love. Amen! To receive the rest of the message please email me at revelations_75044@msn.com

The ink is all but dry on Texas Voter ID law royce west texas senate

By

A routine by comic Bill Cosby weaves the tale of a daily walk to school in telling kids how hard he had it growing up. It was five miles each way, Cosby said, “uphill, both ways.” Such is the task facing Texas Democrats’ attempt to block potentially harmful revisions to Texas’ election laws that are so important to Republicans, that Gov. Rick Perry declared it an “emergency” item, putting it on a fast-track through legislative timelines. Former President Bill Clinton once said that elections have consequences and Democrats will soon pay the price for staying home for the midterm elections. Passing what will be the country’s toughest voter ID law was made easier when more than 20 Democrats were ousted on the way to Republicans

s

gaining a 101-member super-majority in the Texas House. This means Republicans can convene and pass legislation without a single Democrat’s ‘yea’ vote. Others will also feel the repercussions. Republicans are pushing through a bill for which testimony provided no projections on actual implementation costs. Analysts say this unfunded mandate will pass along costs to county governments. And while we mull the reality of laying off thousands of teachers, our colleagues don’t mind diverting resources to solve a problem that doesn’t exist. On the new session’s second day, Senate Republicans passed a rule to bypass the longstanding tradition requiring 2/3 of members’ approval for bills to come up for a vote. Less than a week later, Senate Bill 14 cleared committee in an eveninglong hearing. The next evening, the bill passed the full senate on a party-line vote. SB14 will require Texas voters to display a current government-issued photo ID to cast a ballot. Republicans claim a new law is needed to prevent election day fraud by those who show up at polling sites bearing fake voter registration cards. No evidence exists that validates claims of massive voter fraud of this type. Democrats support laws that insure the integrity of the ballot. But SB14 does not address known improprieties surrounding mail-in ballots. Evidence does exist that minorities, the elderly and disabled are more likely to be without a driver license or

state-issued photo ID. And throughout debate, Senate Democrats foretold the hardships that SB14 could cause would-be voters. In parts of Texas, citizens must drive more than 100 miles to a Department of Public Safety (DPS) location to obtain a state ID. There’s no DPS office in 77 of Texas’ 254 counties. Newlymarried or recently-divorced women could have problems with names on voter registration cards that don’t match those on state IDs. And missing accepted forms of identification can deny or delay the issuance of stateissued ID to applicants. Eight states require voters to present photo identification. None are as restrictive as SB14 looks to be. Neither Indiana nor Georgia laws, both highprofile cases, repel voters like SB14 will. Georgia allows use of an expired state-issued driver license and any valid photo ID issued by the federal government, state agency, county or municipality. Indiana permits use of a photo ID issued by any state or federal agency or a photo ID issued by a state university. Michigan law says voters without a state photo ID can use a current out-of-state license or ID, or a college or high school picture ID. Democrats may have to depend on the U.S. Justice Department to reject a photo ID law they view as unfair. Any changes to voting laws must pass federal pre-clearance due to Texas’ history of voter suppression. Call some Texans un-American and you may have a fight on your hands. But on the night of the State of the Union Address when the president sought to rally the nation around a theme of unity, Texas’ leadership treaded down a path that would only further divide.

American Entertainment and Early Black Slaves... continued from the front page and Milton Meltzer wrote, “the first state for the captive Africans was the open deck of a slave ship.” During the trans-Atlantic slave trade voyages, Africans were “herded up on the deck for exercise and were forced to sing and dance for the amusement of the crew.” On Southern plantations, African traditions, rhythms and dances survived, combined with a developing folk tradition to form the basis for Black American entertainment, and became the “only entertainment and means of self-expression for Black slaves.” Slaves who sang, danced or played instruments were used to entertain their masters or were hired out by them to entertain on other plantations or for public events. ments for slave entertainers. In fact, slave entertainers were very profitable for slave masters, earning thousands of dollars. One of the most popular slave entertainers was “Blind Tom,” one of the most well-known American performing pianists. Blind Tom earned his master, General James N. Bethune of Georgia, hundreds of thousands of dollars, perhaps millions, as a young autistic savant and musical prodigy on the piano. Up North in New York, slaves “shingle danced” on the street for spare change on their days off. Whites did not understand that the prancing and “childish” dancing by slaves was really “satiric commentary” on what slaves considered to be the “highfalutin’ airs, pretensions and gullibility of their masters.” Moreover, slave the-

atrics were “clandestine means of expressing their dissatisfaction” with their enslavement. Even Paul Laurence Dunbar got in a few digs through his poetry. (Reread “When Malindy Sings”). In 1821, free Blacks founded and operated (until whites burned them out) the African Grove Theatre in New York, which showcased a repertoire of Shakespeare. In the 1940s and 50s, William Henry Lane and Thomas Dilward became the first Blacks to perform on the Minstrel Stage. Now, we all know how long Black folks have been entertaining Americans: since the first slave voyages. Yes, slaves rebelled even in their entertainment. Remember Harambee? Advice Column: Ask Karen Hollie In All Things Rejoice

I

geraLdine daVidson-hooker

n his letter to the Philippians, Paul gives an exhortation to "Rejoice in the Lord always - and again I say, rejoice!" (Philippians 4:4). Paul had been arrested and sent to Rome to await trial. He spent his days and nights under house arrest chained to a Roman soldier, but was still able to

say, rejoice...always! When we begin to understand the life changing gift of forgiveness through faith in the sacrifice of Jesus - when we truly grasp the concept of eternity and, through faith, believe we will spend all eternity in the presence of God - we have more than enough reason to rejoice, regardless of our present circumstances. We have more than enough reason...but do we rejoice? If we are unable to rejoice, we have allowed our eyes to become too fixed on the present. Our attention has become focused on our earthly desires, goals and ambitions, and we have lost sight of the blessings of a life in Christ. Either that, or we don't really believe! The verses which immediately follow Paul's call to rejoice list some real benefits of a life of rejoicing. Philippians 4:5-7 "Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Gentleness and a lack of anxiety result from rejoicing in a risen Savior. If Jesus Christ can be raised from the dead and sit down "at the right hand of God" (Hebrews 10:12), then our Heavenly Father can certainly take care of problems with our job, health, kids, finances or relationships - so rejoice! When we rejoice and focus on an eternity in Heaven and a Savior who walks by our side, our anxiety fades - our present trials become "light and momentary" (2 Corinthians 4:17). When we live a life filled with rejoicing, we are able to focus on the solutions we know God can provide. We develop a heart of thanksgiving - a heart which naturally presents everything to God in prayer and waits with grateful expectation for His reply. We begin to trust in God's plan for our life and His desire for us to be with Him forever. The result, which admittedly takes time and patience, is "the peace of God which transcends all understanding."

A Rally for Education in District 5 Something Good in DISD... continued from page 5 Parents also received $100 in gift cards for being involved in their child's education. Because Albert S. Johnston Elementary School had the most students in attendance, they received a check for $500 for their school activity fund account. Additionally, a sponsor gave four tickets to a Dallas Stars Hockey game. The lucky students will join Dr. Lew Blackburn for the game. In past pep rallies at L.G. Pinkston and South Oak Cliff high schools, we gave away gift cards valued at $25, $50, $75, and $100 to students. Teachers and parents also won gift $25 cards. One parent won a

he Tiger Woods story is in the boring stage right now. If they make a movie about Tiger, right now is the time to go get popcorn. Since that litLeon simon tle time it was revealed he was in a few relationships that his wife was not aware of. Mr. Woods’ career has gone south. It makes you think just how much power is in the pen. Could it be that his career is on the down side? The media could be guilty of destroying a marriage as well as a career. It’s been said we have that power. You say, Tiger brought it on himself. True, but was it essential for us to remind the public of his discretion every day? We beat it to death, as we have done to a large number of athletes of color. Michael Vick brought it on himself also. But we helped in the sentencing, and I don’t mean prison. We painted such a rough picture of this young man that it would have been hard for anyone to have compassion for him. The Philadelphia Eagles are still afraid to give him a long term contract. As if dog fighting is habit forming. I don’t know how much gas Barry Bonds had in the tank. But the media made sure he couldn’t find out. Brett Favre was allowed to find out; some say Barry used illegal substances, but that has yet to be proven. I know Brett did, though he never went to jail

february 4, 2011

he put it in his book. And there are some who still don’t know it, because the media don’t remind everybody everyday. Although Brett was in the NFL drug program he was allowed to drink beer. I don’t know if other athletes in the program are allowed to do so. Why do we pick certain athletes to cut up? I’d hate to think most of it was because of race. Some say it’s because some guys are not as cordial with the media and that’s a little pay back. Then I think of a guest who will be in our town on this week. Big Ben Roethlisberger. He’s not a media favorite, yet he’s got a get out of jail free card. There are a lot of people who say Ben hasn’t been found guilty of anything, and that case in Georgia was dropped. O.J. Simpson was found not guilty in court but, the media sentenced him anyway. Roethlisberger won a few games or they give him credit for winning a few games, and all is forgotten. Although the Steelers won games while he was under suspension, it’s a proven fact the Steelers won on defense not big Ben. If they win this game it’ll be defense or their usual play-off official’s call or lack thereof. Josh Hamilton is a wonderful young man and I suspect in the next two or three years if he keeps hitting that ball we won’t know he had a drug problem. But we won’t ever forget Harvey Martin, Thomas Henderson etc. I think the real Rooney rule is to protect Ben Roethlisberger and take their eyes off the fact that the Steelers might have their best coach ever – and I don’t mean Chuck Noll.

he Super Bowl is here this weekend and all the scores are in for the Elite News U-Pick-Em 17 weeks of the NFL regular season and 10 Playoff games. And the winners are: 1st place is Roger B. Brown (74-90); 2nd Place is Leon Simon (170-94); 3rd Place is Jordan Blair (160101); 4th Place is Dr. William Blair (159105); 5th Place is Guest Pickers (157-107); 6th Place is Chris Arnold (156-108); 7th Place is Barbara McCoy (153-111); 8th Place is Jordan Blair II (152-111), and 9th Place is Dave Pigeon (148-116). Each week the participants listed above chose who they thought would win the games along with a different guest picker each week. But only one would take home the prize. As the regular season became closer to the playoffs, the choices became more intense. Even though during the regular season most had hopes that the Dallas Cowboys would come out of its losing streak and become playoff contenders, but that dream faded fast. After all scores were tallied the big winner is Roger B. Brown, a sports radio talk show host for KKDA and also a second time winner of U-Pick-Em. Roger B predicts that the Pittsburg Steelers will win the Super Bowl XLV on Sunday, February 6. The 2nd Place winner, Leon Simon, is an Elite News Sports Writer. Notes From Union Hope

T

o d a y ’ s Christians seem to forget who is really responsible for their salvation; Sunday’s church school lesson was a reminder that we are “Healed eLd LLoyd t. by HIS bruises” morgan Isaiah 53:4-6, 10-12. The one who took upon himself the punishment for our sin’s often is forgotten in these days of prosperity preaching. Isaiah says “he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins, that we might become whole. Jesus is for us what the “whipping boy” was to the slave owner’s son. When the slave owner’s son did anything worthy of chastisement he substituted his son’s “whipping boy”, who he whipped instead of his son. Jesus willingly took upon himself the punishment from his father

page 12

that was really ours so that we might enjoy the righteousness of God which was really his. If you are saved today it is because “God has laid upon Him the iniquity of us all.” Pastor Morgan’s message was “Growing faith the essential of growth in the Christian life” Matt 17:14-20. A man bought his possessed son to the nine disciples in hope of him being healed “But they could not heal him” even though Jesus had given them the power to heal the sick previously. When Jesus arrived on the scene, with just a word the boy was freed of his affliction. The nine asked Jesus why they could not cast him out. In his discourse Jesus said “if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed you could move mountains. He did not say faith the size of a mustard seed but faith as a mustard seed. He was speaking of how from this small seed there sometimes grew plants 12 to 15 feet in a season. The seed was small but it had a great capacity within it. God honors small faith but he expects that faith to grow. Be blessed.
