God's Plan for Parenting Colossians 3:2021
HENry NElSON
“Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. athers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discour-
F
aged.” It is early in the new year but it is not too early to look at the way we teach our children It is nice to know that God has a plan for parenting. It may be that parenting is one of the most difficult jobs on earth. We seem to have more and more parents who do not take their role in their children’s lives seriously. In most cases children do not create problems they reveal them. This seems true for the most part. They reveal where their parents have failed to teach them right and wrong and whether or Knot they have been instructed in the Lord. A study once disclosed that if both
Mom and Dad attend church regularly, 72% of their children remain faithful to church attendance. If only Dad, 55% remain faithful. If only Mom, 15%. If neither attends regularly, only 6% remain faithful. This statistic speaks for itself. It shows the impact of the parents on the children and their faith. Paul gives the children and then the parents some clear instructions about God’s Will for them. Ephesians 6:1-4 says, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother" which is the first commandment with a promise that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth. Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” Amen! Children should obey their parents. One of the qualities that Paul lists of children in the last days is that they will be disobedient to parents. 2nd Timothy 3:2 says,” People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, and unholy.” Amen! It seems that we are in these last
days. In today’s world parents do not teach their children to respect authority anymore. I see this reflected in many of the youth seen riding transit buses, walking the street and using the internet. They do not respect older adults in many settings. It is a constant barrage of loud nasty music, profane language and sexual comments to the passengers on some rail and bus lines. Their parents have not spent the time teaching their children when they are young. It is natural for children to test limits. They want to find out where the boundaries are. You do not need to teach a child to say “no” or “mine” they pick it up without difficulty. Part of the role of parents is teaching their children to share, to give, to forgive, and to love others. We are by nature selfish; part of our role as parents is to teach otherness to our children. We should show our children and grandchildren how good it can feel to help others. That’s what I really appreciate now about work camp that I attended for 3 years at church. We went to help others who were elderly or handicapped and could not do for themselves. You might fix a roof or paint a house or

put a railing on a set of stairs or clean up some property. I remember one lady we helped clean the lot next to her home. It looked like the jungles in Africa. We took swing blades and then mowers and cut down the tall grass. It was hard work. But, it did not feel like it was as hard as it was because I knew I was helping someone who could not do this for themselves and could not afford to pay to have it done. That made a big impression on me as a 17 year old. A father once said to his son, “You should be getting ready. The bus will be here in a minute to pick you up and take you to Sunday school.” The boy asked, “Did you go to Sunday School when you were a boy?” The father replied, “Yes, I did.” The boy said as he was getting dressed, “It probably will not do me any good either.” That little boy was saying something about how much the church had made an impact on his father’s life. That is the sermon that the kids remember.

Why the Word “NIGGER” Should Always be a Part of American History By: JOrDaN BlaIr “In Mark Twain’s lifetime, his books Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn were excluded from the juvenile sections of the Brooklyn Public library (among other libraries), and banned from the library in Concord, MA, home of Henry Thoreau. In recent years, some high schools have dropped Huckleberry Finn from their reading lists, or have been sued by parents who want the book dropped. In Tempe, Arizona, a parent’s lawsuit that attempted to get the local high school to remove the book from a required reading list went as far as a federal appeals court in 1998. (The court’s decision in the case, which affirmed Tempe High’s right to teach the book, has some interesting comments about education and racial tensions.) The Tempe suit and other recent incidents have often been concerned with the use of the word “nigger”, a word that also got Uncle Tom’s Cabin challenged in Waukegan, Illinois.”
C
ertain people would like the use of the word “slave” in place of the word “nigger” throughout several novels. This is being done in an effort to not offend readers – so they say. But how do you just erase history? No one should ever try to erase or change the history of any culture. So why is someone trying to change the history of African Americans? We should all want to remember the past, especially if it was of a negative nature, so we won’t allow it to reoccur. Blacks were called nigger during the times of slavery, and still today. Some things never change. The reason we should never forget the word nigger is because it is regarded by many as one of the most offensive words in the English language and it reminds all of us of a time in history when humanity was flawed. African Americans
s
should remember so that this type of history won’t repeat itself. I’m sure others would like to rewrite “American” history to exclude the shame and humiliation of the way blacks were treated - less than human. This is history and should not be changed. Many of our parents and grandparents don’t use the word “nigger” but instead would say Negro, which has been changed to Blacks, and then changed to African Americans. Our parents and grandparents lived through slavery and some very tough times. They understood the negative connotations of the word “nigger” and all the hurt feelings, hard emotions that they lived through and they will probably not forget. I’m sure our parents and grandparents don’t appreciate when the “n” word is so loosely used today. But they understand that we must not forget what that word stood for and why we must never repeat the negative parts of our history. Again, I’m totally against pulling the word nigger out of the novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. This reminds us of where we came from and how much we have overcome. We need to be more like the Jews. They vowed to never let the world forget the Holocaust and they are smart to do that because the younger ones that might not know their history won’t make the same mistakes in the future. So, the next time you use the word NIGGER, remember it was a derogatory term used to describe you! Since most of the youngsters don’t know their history, they’ve turned it into a “term of endearment,” but it’s not – it’s a derogatory term that should never be forgotten. To the younger generation today, you wear big chains around your necks and don’t realize Blacks were brought to this country in chains. Now your pants sag because you don’t know your history! Remember that men in jail could not have belts so they were given oversized clothes, thus, creating the sagging situation. But, again you don’t know your history so you continue to greet each other with “what’s up, my Nigga” and continue to let your pants sag giving the perception that you don’t respect yourself. That’s just my opinion. We should never forget the word nigger! Although “nigger” has been used in a

derogatory manner since the Revolutionary War, the word represents meanings that are deeply disparaging and used when the speaker or speakers deliberately wishes to cause great offense. Webster’s definition of the word nigger is defined by as a Black person; a member of any dark skinned people; a person of any race or origin regarded as contemptible, inferior, ignorant; a victim of prejudice similar to that suffered by Blacks; a person who is economically, politically, or socially disenfranchised. The origin and history of nigger in 1786, from its earliest usage, it was “the term that carries with it all the obloquy and contempt and rejection which whites have inflicted on blacks” [Cited in Gowres, 1965]. But as Blacks’ inferiority was at one time a near universal assumption in English speaking lands, the word in some cases could be used without deliberate insult. More sympathetic writers in the late 18th century and early 19th century seemed to have used Black in place of the “n” word and after the American Civil War, colored person. This was also applied by English settlers to dark skinned people in India, Australia, and Polynesia. The reclamation of the word as neutral or positive terms in Black culture often with a suggestion of soul or style, as in “what’s up my nigger.” It was attested first in the American south, later in 1968, in the Northern urban based Black Power movement with at a variance, nigga, attested from 1925 without the “h” from 1969, and it is found usually in situations where Blacks use the word nigra. In 1944, on the other hand, reflects a pronunciation in certain circles of negroes, but meant to suggest nigger and is thus deemed according to a 1960 slang dictionary even more derogatory than nigger. Slang phrase “nigger in the wood pile” attested in the 1800’s a mode for accounting for the disappearance of few or an unsolved mystery. In the 1970’s, Richard Pryor popularized the word nigger as a derogatory word that demeans Black people in terms of how the White man used it. With some Black people not knowing the origin of the word had no idea how derogatory it was. When you don’t know your history, you commit mistakes of the past in the future which seems to be our problem as Black people. That’s why we should never forget the word NIGGER.

The MLK parade paid tribute to the life and legacy of the late Civil Rights leader and political activist, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It was more than 25 years ago that then President Ronald R. Advice Column: Ask Karen Hollie The Dark Side of Christmas
W
e associate Christ mas with light. Bright lights everwhere. Lights of every imaginable color. Lights inside and outside. Electric GEralDINE bills skyrocket. DaVIDSON-HOOKEr But the more I have reflected on the Christmas story, the more I have come to realize that for those involved in the Christmas story, their circumstances were anything but joyous light. There was pain and suffering; there was danger and the threat of death. Darkness threatened to overwhelm them. This is because, as Jesus acknowledged in John 3, human beings prefer darkness to light. By remaining in darkness, sinful hearts never see light. Jesus is the light of the world; many have tried to squelch that light, to destroy it – beginning already in Bethlehem. In the Christmas stories in the New Testament, there is a dark side. We prefer not to look at those elements in this season of “peace on earth, good will toward men.” But it is there, and we will never enter into the full truth and impact of the Christmas story unless we do. That is what I mediated on and I trust you received a greater appreciation for the awesome event that happened more than two thousand years ago.

Prayer Closet
fter reading last week’s prayer closet, I trust that we can see clearly the importance of being committed to God and not compromise with his purpose for the devil to affect God’s purpose in our life. Therefore he offers us deals that will tempt us to compromise. Not only did Pharaoh suggest to the children of Israel that they should serve God paSTOr ClarENCE but stay in Egypt and do it. Moses HENDErSON said “it is not proper to do so.” (Exodus 8:25 & 26) Pharaoh then made another suggestion and said, “Ok leave Egypt but don’t go too far.” This is what he tells the Christians, “Come out of the worldly life but not all the way out.” In other words be a Christian, but don’t be too unworldly. Moses refused to compromise with the enemy in Egypt and God provided for his children at the Red Sea. He will do the same for you and me.

he Dallas Mavericks had a strong play-off caliber team, at the start of the season. As a matter of fact only San Antonio had a better record. lEON SIMON I’m not saying that they won’t be in the thick of the NBA race they dropped back in the pack when Star Forward Dirk Nowitski injured his knee. They could regain that form but they lost small forward Caron Butler for the rest of the season. Football coaches say during each game there is a play or a series of plays where you can take control of the game. Not taking advantage of that opportunity can cause you an unnecessary struggle during that game. Such continued mishaps can very easily turn a successful season to one of disaster. The Dallas Mavericks are in that position right now. The Mavericks along with most of the NBA struggles mightily every year to find an adequate or good big man. This year the Mavs happen to have two legitimate NBA centers: Brendan Haywood 7’0 and Tyson Chandler 7’1. They’ve had height before, but never have they had height that could play. They had height last year as a matter of fact, they had height the last 6 years with Eric Dampier. Eric couldn’t jump down, now that the major pieces are in place it’s time for Mark Cuban to make that move

to get this team in the big game: The NBA Championship game. They were in that position before but I thought they were one player short. This team has a better chance than any other Maverick team ever. They have the big man. They have one star in Dirk. The point guard position is good. Jason Kidd, Barea, and Rodriguez (Roddy) Beaubois. I have no idea what’s wrong with Beaubois I hope it’s not fatal, and I do hope he makes it back before the rest of this team retire. This is the time to bring in another star player. I don’t mean big name I mean STAR. When the Cowboys were in like position they paid the cost. When they needed a pass rusher, they got Charles Haley (the best). When they needed a center because Mark Stepnoski got hurt they signed pro-bowler Ray Donaldson. Bernie Kosar when they needed a backup QB. That mentality brought 3 Super Bowls. Three championships bring credibility, now you can pinch pennies; although the Cowboys fans don’t agree. Mark got out and got Carmello Anthony or some one on that scale and bring a Championship to Dallas, what ever the cost. You’ll make it back in the long run you see what it did for Jerry Jones. Jones might not be the most loved person in Dallas sports arena, but he’s made more money than any of the other sports figures in this country. That is off sports. You got to know when to hold’em and know when to fold’em. Mark its time to put your money up!!!!!

Notes From Union Hope ur church school lesson was one that we can use these days “Reassurance for God’s people” Isaiah 48:14-19, 21-22. We live in a time when there is a lot of ElD llOyD T. meanness in our MOrGaN nation to the point that we cannot be sure of what will happen next. God through his prophet sent a word to reassure his people that although they were not in their home land he had a plan and a man that would come and overthrow Babylon and allow them to return home. Although the man (Cyrus) had not been born they were told to be encouraged because he would come. True to his word although Cyrus was not a worshipper of the one God, he was chosen to do his biddings. The lesson

tells God’s people of the peace and blessings they could have enjoyed if only they had listen to his commands. Would not our nation be better if it obeyed God’s commands? The message was delivered by Pastor Lloyd Morgan from the subject “Don’t trust a homemade religion” Matt.5:20. Do you “cherry pick” when you read or study God’s word? Do you take only that part that you agree with or like and ignore those things that would prevent you from living the way you want to? Many Christians today ignore the word of God as it is presented in the Bible. They are like those that Paul spoke of in (Rom.10:3) “For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. They forget that God’s word is forever settled in heaven. In Jesus time it was the scribes and Pharisees who destroyed the true meaning of God’s law by their traditions which made them look good but it was not truth. Be blessed
not run from his testing period when God informed him that it was testing time. When his name was called, Abraham responded, “Here am I Lord”. How do we react when God tests us? Do we protest, or say, “no not now Lord!” I am not ready! Or, ask God questions? Do we try to run away and hide and flunk the test without even trying? Or, do we respond in faith like Abraham. “Lord, here am I.” Testing measures your maturity; it scales your spirituality. Testing quantifies your commitment, testing assesses your aspirations, testing rules your righteousness. Thank God Abraham did not run off and hide and completely give up. Let me raise a question right here. What does it take to pass God’s test of Love. Let me answer for you. 1. Give God the best you have: Abraham’s only son 2. Follow divine direction: The reason why we make low failing grades on God’s test is due to not following His directions. 3. Let go and let God! Abraham gave his best and trusted God to provide.
www.dfwelitenews.com
4. Trust God ro provide whatever is needed. Whatever you need to pass God’s love test, He will provide. Will you pass God’s love test? When you pass this test your tested life becomes a testimony. Let us not forget to read our Bible. May God bless you real good, and may He ever keep you in His loving care.
