On the Block and Making a Difference By: LOLa SearCy

W

e’re back! This week begins anew the “On the Block and Making a Difference” feature. In our “On the Block and Making a Difference” segments, we highlight Preachers, Pastors and Community Leaders who are making a difference in their Church, the lives of their parishioners and the communities where they live and Pastor. This week our spotlight is on Rev. R.O. Moffett. For the past 16 years, this native of Winnsboro, Louisiana has given spiritual leadership to the New Leaf Missionary Baptist Church. Under Pastor Moffett’s leadership the church membership has grown from approximately fifteen members to over five hundred members! And so, when we chose him as our “On the Block and Making a Difference” recipient, it was what has members and

those in the community had to say about him and his work in the community that makes him worthy of being honored this week.

Pastor Moffett – first and foremost is a man who lives and dwells on Scripture and is a true man of

prayer. He prays consistently for the congregation, he teaches the people to live by the word of God and through Christ like behavior. He is accountable and trustworthy. He preaches fulltime, he goes to visit the sick and shut in, he never turns away a stranger, and he is kind and giving, a pastor of discipline and discipleship. In August 2006, Pastor Moffett implemented a program called the Back to School Block Party. This program was created to assist the children in the community. The program was designed to give back to the community and help the families who were not able to purchase uniforms and school supplies for their children. The program is in the 4th year of existence. Under Pastor Moffett’s leadership the program has been a great success. The church helps over a hundred families each year. In June 2006, Pastor Moffett see BLOCK continued on page 4

Do You Know The Difference Between Being Weak and Strong? Isaiah 40:2931 “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men henry neLSOn stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

I

n every situation, we have those whom we consider weak and those whom we consider strong. We all have somewhat different criteria that we use to come to this conclusion. This is generally referred to as “our standards” If someone does not measure up to your standards, you consider them weak. What does this automatically imply? Yes, that we who have set

the standards, are the strong. I can poke holes in this whole system, but for the sake of this message let us consider that your standards are the right ones and that everyone else that does not measure up to those standards, is weak. Let us take a look at what God says from the standpoint of you being the strong one! God views the weak as objects of His special love and care and expects men and women to extend love and concern towards them, as well. God, Himself is there to give strength to those who are weak. Physically, but more importantly God is there to strengthen the spiritually weak, if you would only cry out to Him and let Him work in your lives. Amen! Isaiah 40:29-31 says, “He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, but those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles. They shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and not faint. Amen! 2nd Corinthians 12:9 says, And He

said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness. Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” Amen! Isaiah 53:6 says, “All we like sheep have gone astray. We have turned, every one, to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.” Sin weakened us all, spiritually indeed. We were even weakened unto death. God looked down on mankind’s state and in His love, His mercy, His care and concern, gave us a new life and new strength in Him. God’s word explicitly describes how we are to treat those who are weaker than we are. We, as God’s children, need to emulate God in all of His ways. As God showed mercy, love, and concern for the weak it is only fitting that we, who are strong, also show mercy, love, and concern for our spiritually weak fellow man. Romans 15:1-2, “We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, leading to edification.”

Orientation January 29, 2011 - 9am

Amen! We are not in a jungle atmosphere because we left that mind-set when we left the world. Survival of the fittest is a law of Darwin it is a law of the flesh it is a law with no hope and no help. We, as Christians live under a law of love, a law that frees others as we have been freed. It is a law of hope, in Christ Jesus. Amen! The weakest of us can be given support, encouragement, help, and eventually Eternal Life! Let us remember the proposition. God is the same today as He was back then God still charges the “shepherds” the leaders of the flock with the same amount of love and concern as He did back then. We can readily see that the leadership has a special charge to care for the weak but what about the rank-andfile what about you? God does not leave anyone out of the picture we are to all care for, strengthen, uplift and love those who may be spiritually weaker than ourselves. Eight Dallas Area Football Players Playing in Super Bowl XLV By: LOLa SearCy

E

ight players from the Dallas – Ft. Worth area will be playing on the biggest stage in their football careers. The list includes Dallas Carter’s own, Jonathan Scott, SMU’s Emmanuel Sanders, and Daniel Sepulveda of Highland Park head the list of locals representing the Pittsburgh Steelers. Ennis’ Graham Harrell, Josh Bell of Skyline, Dimitri Nance of Euless Trinity, Marshall Newhouse of Lake Highlands and Charlie Peprah of Plano East High School will make their Super Bowl debut with the Green Bay Packers. Jonathan Scott will make his first Super Bowl appearance with the Pittsburg Steelers. Scott is an Offensive Tackle who played college football with the University of Texas Longhorns, with Coach Bruce Chambers (former Dallas Carter Head Football Coach). This is Jonathan’s 4th season in the NFL, after being drafted in the

5th round in the 2006 NFL draft by the Detroit Lions. He was often sidetracked by injuries and never really had an opportunity to play in Detroit for the Lions. Frustrated with his injuries, the Lions traded Jonathan in 2008 to the Buffalo Bills. Scott was signed as a free agent by the Buffalo Bills. He spent 2008 & 2009 with the Bills. He didn’t play in any games in 2008, but in 2009 he started 8 games as the Bills’ offensive line was hit with a rash of injuries. Scott missed several games that season himself due to recurring ankle injuries. The Steelers signed Jonathan during the off season. Jonathan will replace Max Starks in the starting line up in the Super Bowl game. Steelers’ new offensive line Coach Sean Kugler, who worked with Jonathan when he played for the Buffalo Bills made the call to start Jonathan ahead of Starks and he hopes that during Super Bowl XLV, we will finally see who the real Jonathan Scott is. Also making his Super Bowl debut is

Graham Harrell. Harrell hails from this writer’s hometown of Ennis, Texas. Harrell played QB at Ennis High and led his team to two 4A State Championships in 2001 and 2002; all the while setting and breaking nearly every record held by a High School Quarterback in the country. Harrell played his college football at Texas Tech University under the legendary Mike Leach and Dallas Carter Receiver and now San Francisco 49er, another Dallas Carter standout, Michael Crabtree, who was on the receiving end of most of the touchdown passes Harrell threw. While at Tech, Harrell continued to break and set records as a college Quarterback. Graham finished 4th in the Heisman voting in 2009. He spent his first year in the Canadian League playing with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The Packers signed Harrell to their practice squad in May of 2010. We want to wish all of these guys Good Luck! And, I’m not telling who I want to win Super Bowl XLV!

2011 Super Bowl Party…Were You Invited? By: JOrDan BLair anD LOLa SearCy

T

he 2011 Super Bowl Party is about to begin. Were you invited? I know you are all thinking about the usual Super Bowl parties where you go out to the different venues and watch the Super Bowl game on huge television screens and root for your favorite team to win. But that’s not the Super Bowl party I’m talking about. I’m talking about the economic party that will be going on over the next two weeks when Super Bowl XLV comes to the Dallas Ft. Worth area. And the “you” I’m talking about are the African American business men and women, companies and corporations. How many African American vendors will take part in one of the biggest economic boosts to hit the North Texas area in decades? It is estimated that approximately $600 million dollars or more will be pumped into the economy over the

S

coming weeks. But how many African American businesses will benefit from Super Bowl XLV being hosted in the DFW area? I know that there were several workshops being held as early as February 2010 all across the Dallas-Ft Worth area to help women and minority business owners win contracts for Super Bowl XLV. Overall, nearly 2,000 minority and women business owners showed up for the free workshops held at Arlington Stadium and the Fort Worth Stockyards. There were opportunities for contractors and subcontractors for staffing, cleaning, photography, entertainment, painting and many other services. When the announcement was made that Super Bowl XLV was coming to Cowboys stadium, I immediately thought of the economic impact it would have on the metroplex. Living in a small town just 40 miles or so from the Cowboys stadi-

um, I envisioned the hotels in my small town overflowing with visitors who did not have the funds to stay in hotels in the area. But when last I checked, none of them were full to capacity by visitors attending the Super Bowl, it’s still early, so maybe within the next week, hotel rooms will start to fill up. But then my thoughts turned toward my experience when I was blessed to attend the inauguration of President Barack Obama. There were so many “little guys” on the streets of Washington, DC selling their merchandise to the millions who came to celebrate. I remember the little guys who sold t-shirts, caps, key chains, wrist bands, visors, all kinds of things. I remember that on every corner, there were opportunities for the ‘little” guys to make a profit. I wonder how

Almost a year ago, Pastor Moffett was approached to partnership with other churches to work with a program called The Metropolitan Dream Center. The church has been feeding the homeless in the community and working with the Homeowners Association developing ways of assisting the people who are less fortunate. Advice Column: Ask Karen Hollie What It Means to Forgive

A

ll forgiveness begins with a belief that God desires us to forgive in any situation; "If you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins" (Matthew 6:15). I'm not sure how to geraLDine fully interpret DaviDSOn-hOOKer this verse, but one thing we know...our call to forgive is serious! If we are unable, or unwilling, to forgive we need to spend more time reflecting on the forgiveness of Christ. Do we really understand? Do we really believe? Our ability to forgive identifies our focus: Is our priority on Christ or on our own needs and desires, hurts and pain? But forgiveness is not simply saying the words "I forgive you." Rather, forgiveness is canceling the emotional debt. It means we love and earnestly pray for blessings in the other person's life; "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you" (Matthew 5:44). We should be able to think about the other person without bitterness, rage, or anger. We should be able to pray for an increase in their ministry or business, more peace in their family, and a closer relationship with Jesus. It's amazing how much healing takes place in our own heart when we sincerely pray for those who have caused us pain. However, forgiveness does not necessarily mean a relationship must continue as if the hurt never occurred. Our heart may be free of all anger and bitterness - we may earnestly pray for the one who caused us pain - and yet, we no longer trust or enjoy their company. My forgiveness of a child abuser does not require me to leave my children in their care. I can love with a Christ-like love and pray without anger and yet guard my physical body and emotional and spiritual heart. We must trust God to guide our steps in this area. It's unfortunate, but most of us are carrying some bitterness toward another person today. These burdensome emotions should not continue in the heart of a Child of God, and the only road to release them is through the gate of forgiveness. Let's ask God to purify our heart. Let's refocus on the cross and release our burdens to Him. Let's honor our Father by showing the world what it means to forgive.

Celebrate the New Year with a Resolution to Improve Academic Performance Jan. 2011

T

he traditional New Year’s resolution can be a powerful tool for parents to help their children improve school performance. There is no magic involved in getting the most out of a resolution. It is a matter of truStee LeW setting goals, folBLaCKBurn, DiStriCt 5 lowing through with small steps until they become habits, and celebrating successes, no matter how modest, along the way. Parents may want to try these helpful strategies to help their children develop positive habits that will make the second semester of school, and perhaps the rest of their educational career, a more successful experience. 1. Review the first semester. Involve the student in identifying what went well

and why, and what did not work so well. 2. Expand on the list of what worked well. Help the student see how practices like stuffing his or her backpack and putting it by the door each evening before bed ensure that homework actually gets turned in. 3. List practices that did not yield positive results. Bridge to the positive by evaluating how a few simple changes might turn those poor habits into best practices. 4. Ask the teachers for suggestions. They know how to help your child be a better student. One of the most powerful strategies might be announcing the resolution and enlisting others in helping to ensure accountability. Doing this will also let your child’s teacher know you and your student are committed to improvement. 5. Set at least 3 goals for the new semester. Break them into simple steps. Write these steps down on a large sheet of paper and post it in a prominent location. Challenge your student to visit the list regularly and check each goal to

indicate how faithfully he or she is following them. Make a weekly commitment to sit with your child to revisit the list to help stay on course. Encourage honesty in evaluating how well your child is practicing the new habits. Don’t be afraid to modify the plan or break down the steps even further if you think it will be helpful. Remember to celebrate successes and have a real conversation with your child about why things are or aren’t working. To show you appreciate how challenging change can be, make a plan to change some habit of your own. Post it publicly, faithfully marking it to show your own progress. This example will likely lead to some meaningful conversations with your child and help you both learn how to take steps to make positive changes—a powerful skill you can both use to improve throughout life. Ask your child to share their resolutions with me. They can send them to my email address; lblackburn@dallasisd.org. I will recognize several students for their efforts and commitment.

The pencil sharpener inventor was none other than black inventor John Lee Love. John Lee Love's invention was a very simple and portable pencil sharpener. The same kind of pencil sharpener that many artists use or that can be found in an office or school room. In John Lee Love's invention the pencil is put into the opening of the sharpener and rotated by hand. It was designed so that the shavings

would stay inside the sharpener. It is interesting to note that while the patent drawing depicts the Love Sharpener as being quite plain. John Lee Love wrote that it could also be designed in a very ornate fashion and that his pencil sharpener could also be used as a desk ornament or paperweight. John Lee Love's pencil sharpener was patented on November 23, 1897 (U.S. Patent #594,114).

T

his is an historic time in the Metroplex. Aside from the first SuperBowl the Hall of Fame committee will pick the class of 2011. LeOn SimOn Right now 15 finalists remain. They will select and have selected these guys because of their ability to battle the odds and come from behind and win. If I would make a list of qualities it takes to get in the Hall, the ability to come from behind would be number one. That’s the ending to sports movies that everyone loves. The book ending that endears people to sports books, not just books and movies that’s just the old American feel good story. Rocky, Rudy etc., Iowa Jima those type events and movies always leave us with warm feeling. The Hall of Fame is loaded with guys like Roger Staubach, John Elway, and Joe Montana. Those last minute heroics got more people in the Hall than the flat out ability to play. In Dallas we were privileged to see probably the greatest high school sprinter this country has produced in Roy Martin. And when Roy’s name comes up the topic is always his ability to come from behind, and believe me he did it plenty of times. That’s a topic for another day. If I made another list of the worst habits, that characteristic would be num-

ber one. Getting behind continually is and will always be the worst habit. Did John Elway not know when those games started? Joe Montana did your team not pay you for the 1st quarter? Roger did your contract omit the first part of the game? Sometimes in the effort to come from behind the distance can be so great before you desire to play the other team or player has finished. In all cases this is not how true circumstance can put you in position to have an up hill fight. And that should be the time to do that – not every game or every race. In following John Elway’s career you would think some of those games started with John behind. At one point I thought those games were scripted. There is and old philosophy I subscribe to: “If you can’t keep up you can’t catch up.” The two teams coming here next week fought off late rallies to win there respective championships. I’m going out on a limb and picking underdog Pittsburgh to win their 3rd Super-Bowl in 6 years. Although I think the Steelers have a good enough team to win, I don’t dare bet against a team like the Steelers. When as far back as the beginning of the Super-Bowl era, The Franco Harris reception, the phantom Benny Barnes interference and the incomplete pass that was called a fumble against the Jets this year. The Steelers have yet to win a championship that didn’t have a disputed game changing call. I’ll go farther out on that limb and say this game will be no different. There will be a game changing call that will give the Steelers the game.

Notes From Union Hope o you ever wonder why you are here? Why you were born? In our church school lesson the Prophet Isaiah declares that the Lord called him eLD LLOyD t. before he was mOrgan born, from within the womb God called him by name (What if he had been aborted) “The servant’s Mission in the world” Isaiah 49:1-6. Everyone that comes into the world came for a purpose but many live a life time and never find their purpose. They know something is missing a void that they cannot fill; they turn to alcohol, drugs, and other vices to fill the void that only God can fill. Although Isaiah knew his purpose and God had called him to be a Prophet he experienced difficulties. In spite of the prob-

lems we may face if we have God on our side we can with confidence say “I will leave it in the Lord’s hands; I will trust God for my reward. Our mission in this world as Christians is to let our light shine that men may see our good works and glorify our father in heaven. Our morning message was delivered by Pastor Lloyd Morgan from the subject “God’s search for a Man” Jer 5:1.This being our Annual Men’s day the pastor challenged our men to strive to be the man that could save a city. Have you noticed how quick people devalue things and relationships? How quick we are to “Get use to things and people” and then we began to take them for granted? This is what happened to Israel they forgot the value of having Jehovah as their God. Have you been saved so long that you now take God for granted? Have “Grace” made you ungrateful? The divine idea of a man is one that loves the Lord, execute judgment, and seek truth. God Bless!

first year. The school will add a grade and about 120 additional students each year, up to a maximum of 450 students in grades 9-12. About half of the students who attend New Tech High School are expected to come from the A. Maceo Smith feeder pattern. The other half will come from across the district. Transportation will be provided for all students. Parents have a choice about their child’s secondary school. Because of limited space, an application process will be used for attendance at the New Tech High School. Applications must be submitted by March 23. Candidates will be screened on April 9. Acceptance notifications will be sent on April 18. Students must complete onsite writing samples and demonstrate math problem-solving, as well as be interviewed. Lastly, The Dallas Independent School District has joined other Texas school districts in observing School Board Recognition Month in January to honor the hard work and dedication of trustees who serve voluntarily and without compensation. According to the Texas Association of School Boards, school boards are charged with establishing a vision for a district’s education program, designing a structure

www.dfwelitenews.com

to achieve that vision, ensuring that schools are accountable to the community and strongly advocating continuous improvement in student learning. The Dallas ISD Board of Trustees establishes policies by which the district operates. It is my honor to serve the constituents of District 5 and the students of our district!

I am available to meet with your organization to discuss the many successes with Dallas ISD in general, and District 5 in particular. Contact my office at 972-925-3722 for a list of schools in District 5 where you can volunteer as a tutor or mentor, or to schedule my visit.

Celebrating 50 Years

2011 Super Bowl Party…Were You Invited?... continued from page 3 many “little” guys will be allowed to sell their wares on the streets of Arlington and Ft. Worth during Super Bowl XLV. How many African American and minority small business owners who attended the workshops, meetings, etc., were actually awarded contracts? And if they were not able to secure a contract, will they be able to sell their products on the streets of downtown Arlington and Ft. Worth. It would be very interesting to see just how many African American, Women and Minority businesses were awarded contracts. And just how much of an economic impact did Super Bowl XLV have on the minority businesses in the area? Fort Worth has already stated that street vendors would not be able to sell their wares on the streets during the Super Bowl. Oh, and by the way, if you are thinking about selling some of your goods at Jerry’s World, don’t even think about it. I remember attending the Super Bowl in New Orleans and Houston. It was just like the inauguration. All the little people got a chance to share in the economic prosperity. Why does that not seem to be happen-

ing here in Dallas? One vendor, who attended all the workshops and obtained a certification, still didn’t get an opportunity at any of the business. The NFL and the big boys brought in vendors that they have used for years from around the country, but if the NFL did use a local vendor, and that local vendor had a restaurant, the NFL leased their kitchen or facility - but past that, not a lot of other opportunities. So let me ask the question again, were you invited to the Super Bowl party? The last time I looked, how many events took place South of I30 in the Oak Cliff area pertaining to the Super Bowl. Thank God for TheUltimateSuperBowl Week.com that’s bringing athletes and celebrities to the southern sector so that the African American kids will get a chance to see them and interact with them more so than on television. Thanks for those who are looking out for our community and the kids. That’s just our opinion. What’s yours? We want to hear from you. Send your comments to Jordan@elitenews.com, or lolasearcy@sbcglobal.net.
