New Day in Dallas County and the promise to make county government and the criminal justice system more efficient and transparent were the promises being made at “swearing in” ceremonies at the Sixth Floor Museum and across Dallas on New Year’s Day. Newly elected and incumbent Democrats took the oath of office since sweeping Dallas County elections this past November.

“26 years ago I was sworn in as a Jr. Commissioner and now I am the Elder.” “Today I have a predominantly Democratic Court, and the first Hispanic to serve on the Commissioner’s Court.

“Today is a new day and a new time”, said Dallas County’s most tenured Commissioner, John Wiley Price.

Among those taking the oath of office was newly elected County Judge, Clay Jenkins. Judge Jenkins, a Highland Park civil attorney defeated Republican Judge Wade Emmert in November’s county elections. After receiving the oath of office from Commissioner Price, Judge Jenkins had this to say to those in attendance. “We sit at the crossroads of commerce for goods traveling between the West Coast and the Eastern seaboard and north from Mexico.”

Dr. Garcia wife of Dallas Attorney and former State Representative Domingo Garcia defeated Republican Kenneth Mayfield to seal a Democratic majority on the Commissioner’s Court. “A new day means new leadership and new ideas, and we’re ready to confront our challenges, she said.

Commissioner Garcia said that she too, would push for more accountability and transparency in County Government.

his being the first week in the year of 2011. I do not know about you, but it seems that time just keeps moving faster and faster. Where did the time go? I was also reminded of the production of the musical Fiddler on the Roof. It specifically reminded me of one of the songs from the

play Sunrise, Sunset. Time continues to march on, and we are challenged to answer the questions that it brings, and those challenges will be laden with both "happiness" and "tears." So how will you answer those questions and challenges?

You could be like a lot of people and make New Year’s Resolutions though after listening to these "Word on the Street" interviews you might wonder if they really do any good. I hope that if you made any resolutions you would do a better job than these folks, but the reality is you are probably not much different. We just got into 2011 and I am guessing you are already struggling. Even so, I would like to offer you a few goals that I think each of us should make for 2011. They are found in Proverbs 3:1-5 I will get in the Word and stay in the Word. The Bible is annually the best-selling book. I wish that being the most sold book translated into being the most read book!

Unfortunately, I know that is not true. Let’s see what Proverbs tells us about getting into and staying in the Word...

Verse #1 "My son, do not forget my

teaching, but let your heart keep my commands." We all need to make a renewed effort to be good students of God’s Word. We need to be reading it daily.

We need to be studying it with others.

Which means if you are not coming to Sunday school you should start next week?

If you cannot be there at 9:30 AM then go at 11:00 AM. You cannot be who Jesus wants you to be if you do not know what Jesus wants you to be. So how do you know? Where do you find the instructions for living a life that pleases the Lord? In the bible! But it’s not enough just to read the Word; you need to be studying the Word.

The author of Proverbs says that "iron sharpens iron" in Proverbs 27:17, which means that you need one another if you truly want to sharpen your spiritual lives. I do not mean to diminish the value of personal Bible Study, but I believe it is both arrogant and foolish to believe that you can study the Bible alone without any interaction with others and get all that the Lord wants to reveal to you. You being in Bible Study and sharing what God has shown you might be exactly what someone

So what does that mean? Can I promise you that if you start coming to Sunday school, Wednesday Bible Study, and get involved in a Home Bible Study you will live longer. Well, no I cannot, but I can promise you this: Getting into the Word with others will add to your life. There are things about life that you will never learn until you are willing to make a commitment to faithfully studying God’s Word. Why not make that resolution today. I will get serious about commitment to God and others. If there was one thing that I think is most missing in our culture today it would be commitment. People are not committed to God, like they should be. Here is a simple illustration that I have seen develop over the years:

ith the New Year upon us, many see it as making changes in their life, making broken promises for New Year’s resolutions, and trying new things. But for some, like Clarence Miller, see a “Vision.” In Webster’s Dictionary, vision means “the act of seeing external objects; actual sight.” Another definition is “to see in a vision or dream”, that is how Clarence Miller see’s his vision.

Clarence Miller’s vision is to build an educational foundation, “The Mission of the Thelma Cupitt Brown (TCB) School,” to educate children of all races, ethnics, and creeds to become a better student and to provide a learning environment and learning tools for those who desire to learn by fostering the creation of a culture governed by Christian principles using interactive small groups, selected documentation, and artistic expression in a very organized, disciplined, and controlled setting.” Clarence Miller says, “There is a noticeable gap in our society between the opportunity to learn and the actual learning that is taking place.

With many of us, the gap began in our childhood and has continued throughout any education process with which we have been involved. It is not clear how the gap was caused or the rate at which it is growing. However, it is clear that, if a different approach to learning is not taken “the education process” that is in place will continue to fail to meet the intellectual, emotional, and spiritual objectives to which most of us aspire.”

As I spoke with Mr. Miller, I learned that his vision was for every individual who experiences the activities of this culture validated through their actions will be used to help meet the intellectual, emotional, and/or the spiritual objectives to which most of us aspire.

Through his vision, Miller wants to assist churches in getting the resources that will help their energy cost through his daily employment at Ideal Impact. I asked Mr. Miller how long has he had this

Directions: 1. For rub, in bowl combine chile powders, paprika, peppers, and sugar.* 2. Prepare grill for direct cooking over low heat (about 300 degrees F). Meanwhile, let

Remove from grill. Let rest at least 5 minutes.

4. Top hot steaks with Whiskey Butter. To serve, slice steaks. Makes 4 servings.

Whiskey Butter: Combine butter, shallot, parsley, mustard, Worcestershire, Jack Daniel's, salt, and pepper. Mix well. Drop butter in spoonfuls onto waxed paper. Roll in plastic and smooth out to form a round log.

Refrigerate until hard and easy to cut, at least 3 hours. Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week, or freeze for up to 3 months.

Direct Grilling: For this method, the food is placed on the grill rack directly over the heat source. Direct grilling is best for searing and cooking small, tender cuts that cook in 30 minutes or less, such as steaks, burgers, or boneless chicken.

What really is this day we call Christmas?

The early church didn't give much thought to the birth of Jesus. Of the four Gospels only gerAlDine Matthew and Luke even DAViDson-hooKer mention His birth, and these accounts are relatively brief. Certainly, the emphasis of the Gospels was on Jesus' ministry, death, and resurrection. And after Jesus ascended to Heaven, the focus of the church was on living for Him, sending out His message, and waiting for His return.

No one is really sure when Jesus was born.

The first recorded celebration didn't occur until 200 years after His birth, and it wasn't until the year 330 that the birth of Christ was assigned to December 25th. Some say Jesus was actually born in September or October and others are sure He was born in March or April (in fact, a case has been made for His birth in each of the twelve months!). But it's generally agreed that, due to the relatively colder weather, December was an unlikely time for the birth of our Savior. So what really is Christmas?

Christmas is a day to remember the most profound event in the history of the world. On that first Christmas (whenever it was), God came to earth to live among us! He was born into the most humble circumstances, grew and taught us His truths, died on a cross for our sin, and was raised to be with The Father; all so we might live with Him for eternity.

December 25th is a day to celebrate with quiet reflection, as Mary "treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart" (Luke 2:19). It is also a day to celebrate with great rejoicing, as the shepherds "returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen" (Luke 2:20). The world has tried to remove Christ and insert many activities into this season which do not glorify God. But this need not hinder our worship. We have the ability to turn away the evil and embrace that which is honoring and good.

We can (and should) glorify God and celebrate the gift of our Savior every day throughout the year. But let's take the opportunity to make this season and this day special. Let's celebrate with a focused and thankful heart, and I pray you made December 25th a blessed day of remembrance.

Speculation is that by weeks end Jason Garrett will be named head coach. There is one glitch, the Rooney rule has to be obeyed. One minority coach has to be interviewed before anyone can be hired.

Every since Jason was named interim coach, some people thought he shouldn’t be considered, because he was part of that Wade Phillips crew that couldn’t get it together.

First I would like to apologize for calling him “Brain Dead Red”. If he proved any thing he proved he’s not brain dead. First he proved that this team as inept as they are, did have enough life to finish the season stronger than they started it. The league proved they weren’t as talented as the rest of us first thought. Jason got them in an NFL frame of mind where they had been in an ESPN frame of mind. No discipline, no fight, just get paid on Tuesday and embarrass themselves on Sunday.

When Jason was an assistant to Wade he couldn’t do anything without Wade’s approval. Wade didn’t want them to have contact and it showed on Sunday.

When Todd Haley was the Wide Receiver’s Coach he didn’t display an ability to be a head coach in his dealing with T.O. and the receiving corp. But his Kansas City Chiefs are in the play-offs never the less.

Sometimes Back up’s and Assistants are never given a chance. Johnny Unitas was cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers until George Shaw broke his ankle with the Colts and as they say… the rest is history. Franco Harris was not the man at Penn State.

The best thing Jason Garrett has going for him, he’s been tutored by some of the same people that Jerry gets advice from; Jimmie Johnson among others. Jason has a wealth of ex teammates and Assistant coaches that’ll go to bat for him.

The coaches that most people want: John Gruden, Bill Cowher. Gruden went to a team built by Tony Dungy. Bill Cowher was in Pittsburgh an awful long time before he won. Plus Cowher won’t work here he’s like Parcells; won’t let his coaches talk, and he’s not gonna say too much himself.

he man who is responsible for bringing the Annual State Fair Classic to Dallas is back! And it ain’t football.

This time he has a basketball game to rival all basketball games! The basketball game pits longtime football rivals - Prairie View A & M Panthers against their arch football rivals, the Grambling State Tigers. It’s called 4 the Love of Basketball! State Fair Classic promoter Al Wash has added a new twist to the game. Not only will the men of Prairie View and Grambling be balling, but so will the Lady Panthers and the Lady Tigers! Yep, this time the ladies will be vying for bragging rights! The game will take place on Saturday, January 15th at the Ellis Davis Field House located at 9191 South Polk here in Dallas. How wonderful it is to serve a God that is so high and holy and yet desire to maintain a relationship with us. When we are at our worst he still loves us. We do not deserve it but because he has placed his love upon us because of his son Jesus, he is quick to forgive and restore. The lesson taught us that only God really know our future; he declared that he expose false prophets as liars and make fools of fortune-tellers and he cause the would be wise to give bad

advice, proving them to be fools. We must be careful who we lend our ears to and who we place our trust in. Our morning message was delivered by Pastor L.T.Morgan from the subject “The land of no more” Rev 21:1-7. The church is not just something we do; it is about a journey that has a destination, a place called heaven. We must emphases the word “place” because there are those that would have us believe that heaven is only a state of mind but I will take Jesus word for it when he said “I go to prepare a “Place” for you”. I also believe that he will come again to take his bride (the church) to that place he has prepared for the believer.

Bush left our country in the biggest mess since the Great Depression, not to be confused with the depression most of us went thru,lol! I look to Rev. Martin Luther Kings Birthday in a couple of weeks as a beacon for all of us! We have come a long way and HE did not bring us this far to leave us! As long as I'm being reflective...Congrat's to Dallas District Attorney Craig Watkins, who continues to put away the bad and attempt to free the wrongly incarcerated. A local brotha, Clarence Dupree Jr. was declared innocent Tuesday after 30 years in prison. Mr. Dupree refused to

admit to a 1979 rape and robbery, in the process serving more time for a crime he didn't commit than any other Texas inmate exonerated by DNA evidence.

"Whatever your truth is, you have to stick with it," Dupree, 51, said Tuesday!

Can U sue someone for stealing a groupie??? Former NBA star Antoine Walker is being sued for $5,000,000 by a man claiming the athlete stole his fiancée, and then laughed in his face. In the lawsuit filed Tuesday in Chicago, Kevin Jenkins says he actually caught his fianceé having “an intimate moment” with Walker back in October and “Mr. Walker reportedly taunted and laughed at Jenkins with the intent of causing him emotional distress.” Man up, dude! s. Era Mae (Clark) Thomas was born in Dallas, Texas on February 24, 1919, the first born child of Ned & Eugena Carroll who both preceded her in death.

Era Mae was the eldest of erA mAe (ClArK) thomAs six children; one brother Walter Perry Clark preceded her in death. She received her formal education in the Dallas ISD. She accepted Christ at an early age. On December 24, 1935 she married the love of her life, Deacon Johnnie A. Thomas who preceded her in death and to this union no children were born. She was a member of Greater North Park C.O.G.I.C., where she served as the faithful vice-president of the deaconess board and anywhere else she was needed until her health failed. She leaves to cherish her memories 4 sisters Nora, Bertha, Dorothy & Zerlean and a brother Roy along with a host of relatives and friends. “We Will Miss You” from the “Clark & Fullylove Families”

ister Bennie Jean Hearn was born February 23, 1938, in Henderson, Tx. to the union of the late Simon & Pauline Hollis.

She received her formal education in Henderson, bennie JeAn Tx., and also in Kilgore, Tx. heArn She moved to Dallas, Tx. where she met and married Odell Hearn (who preceded her in death) and to this union five children were born. She was a devoted and dedicated member at F.G.H.T. and president of the usher board for fifty years and also, the coordinator of the annual appreciation for the pastor and wife. She worked closely with her husband with the annual Christmas giveaway and continued after his passing. She had many friends and was known as Aunt Bennie.

She leaves to cherish her memories, one sister, one son, four daughters, two great grand children, nieces, nephews and host of relatives and friends.
