The Radio Community Mourns the Loss of Lynwood Henderson By Lola Searcy

T

he radio community is saddened by the news of the death of Mr. linwood Henderson. to many of our readers, he is most commonly known as Cuzzin’ linnie; the former Disc Jockey and radio personality who many credit with breaking the color barrier in Dallas – ft. worth radio in the 1960’s. He had a style that was defined as innovative and unique, because of the way he communicated on the radio. Mr. Henderson started his career in the late ‘50’s with Jimmy Jones on KPrs radio out of Kansas City, Missouri. it was during that time that the great sam Cooke nicknamed him, “the Cuz”. Cuzzin’ linnie was hired by Gordon McClendon at time when racial tension was still very prevalent in the city of Dallas and in the state of texas. Cuzzin’ linnie was able to cross racial lines with the music he played. He played music that people, “all people” enjoyed, regardless of race, color or creed. He style was similar to that of the late DJ wolfman Jack, and some

Did Casey Anthony receive the right verdict? By: Bettye “Katt” Williams ElitE NEws staff writEr

B Casey Anthony was found “not guilty” for the murder of her two year old daughter

y now all of america has heard the news about Casey anthony, right? she is the 19 year old female who allegedly killed her 2 year old daughter. Most of us have watched the trial and heard all the closing arguments. But as the nation watched…the verdict was given. “NOt GUiltY…sHOCKiNG! Casey anthony was acquitted of murdering her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee. the finale, a trial that held the nation’s attention for several months, ended totally opposite of what

most of us thought. Casey anthony found not guilty on murder charges, but charged with four counts of giving false information to law enforcement officers. and to further add to this madness, she may not serve any more time, based on the time she has already served. the Casey anthony trial is being compared to the 1995 O.J. simpson trial. this was not O.J. simpson’s trial all over again, but thousands watched daily as the anthony trial unfolded, just as they did during the simpson trial. and, as the verdict was read, the media canvassed several audiences to

ow many of you have enjoyed playing the game Monopoly? You know how the game works. Players accumulate property, build houses and hotels, and then wait for the other players to land on their property so they have to pay up. Eventually you hope to bankrupt everyone else and have all the money and property. truly, american Capitalism at its best! But, regardless of who wins the game, when the game is finished, the board is folded up, all the game pieces are put away, and the lid goes on the box. it

has only been a game. Owning a rolls royce, an extravagant house, and living a “more-is-better” life will yield no more joy for eternity than winning at Monopoly. when your life is over, the game pieces are put away, and the lid is closed on your coffin. it won’t really matter who owned the railroads or Boardwalk. Earthly wealth does not guarantee earthly happiness or heavenly treasure. Amen! it does not matter whether you earn a little or a lot, whether we spend everything or hoard it all. when you find yourselves in financial bondage you are preoccupied with money. You become anxious about meeting present obligations, and are driven to get more money and the things money can buy. some of you reading this message may be doing very well in reference to these things. You are living within your income and are being wise and faithful in the use of the money God has given us. Your desires are in check and we are being generous. Others of us, on the other hand, may be in a very difference place. Money is all you

think about. it is the thing that causes the greatest tension in our marriage. You screen our calls to try to avoid the bill collectors. Your credit cards are maxed out and you are barely making your minimum payments. the pressure is great and you are not sure how much longer you can bear it. Amen! the good news for all of us today is that God is concerned about our financial affairs. He is not only concerned, he can teach us the right way to handle our money and he will bless us in the process. God knows all too well that the love of money leads to all kinds of evil. He knows that materialism is a trap and that many people have fallen into it and have been plunged into ruin and destruction. and that is why God’s word has so much to say about the proper perspective toward money and proper principles for handling it. so, with the rest of the message we will look at six principles that lead to financial freedom. the principle of work. the Bible teaches that you should strive to earn an honest

ESTABLISHED IN 1960

LINNIE, continued from front page say that is the reason he was so popular with the radio listeners; because you couldn’t tell if he was black or white. His career began at Klif radio – the Mighty 1190, playing the music known as go-go rock –n- pop. He then moved to KXXX radio, also known as the radio station for the “groovy grown-ups”, then to soul 73 KKDa, where he and the late councilman al lipscomb, and Commissioner John wiley Price hosted a show that was known throughout the african – american community as the “voice” of african – americans; the show was dropped in 1998 for reasons to this date are still unclear. Cuzzin’ linne had been ill for more than a year, and it is reported that he was placed on hospice care because his organs were shutting down and they were just going to make him as comfortable as possible. all reports indicate that he passed away in his sleep on last thursday, June 30th. “i was very fond of Cuz. He was a positive force in the industry with his high-energy

show. Cuz was engaging, compassionate and well-informed and that’s why he was so popular”, said Cheryl smith former co-worker and radio personality. “it is hard to put into words my feelings and thoughts about Cuzzin’ linnie. He was a great man, a great DJ and a great personality. whenever someone in the community was in trouble he would put on his ‘round Up the Posse t-shirt and tell everyone, it was time to “’round up the posse so we could get together and help out”, said friend and co-worker, Bobby Patterson. wake service for Cuzzin’ linnie is scheduled for friday, July 8th from 7:15 – 8:15 at the Golden Gate funeral Home located at 4155 s. r.l. thornton frwy. Dallas, texas. funeral service will be held on saturday, July 9th at 3:00 pm at the Church of the living God located at 3711 Biglow, where Bishop Harold Edwards is Pastor. He is survived by his wife, Mary ann Henderson, one brother, Morris Henderson; daughters Brenda Joyce Jackson, Vanessa thomas, shelia thomas; one son terry lowe; brother in-law, william C. Bryan; nephew Keith Bryan; and his KNON 89.3 and KKDa family. Psalm 4:8

Dr. William M. Campbell

Alarm companies claim to provide protection but only the Lord can provide peace.

I

n the fourth verse of Psalm 137, we find the oppressor saying to israel to sing of those songs that they used to sing in Zion (same way we used to be asked to sing one of those “OlD NEGrO HYMNs”) and israel came back with, “ how shall we sing the lord’s song in a strange land?” the question asked here is a question, which is asked throughout our lifetime. the question is really a question of how to remain positive in a negative situation. it is a question of how to hold on to your joy in the midst of sorrows, how to be sweet in bitter waters. the lord’s song is human affirmation of divine sovereignty. that’s what the lord’s song is. How can you affirm sovereignty of God in continued hostility? that’s the question here. How can a Christian do it in a situation that destroys and minimizes and oppresses, distorts, and seeks to rob self-esteem. in achievement and success is to be found in the ability to hold on to your joy. when things are going well it is easy to serve and worship God. Everybody can see that you are a Christian, it shows up in your face, in your actions, in your joyous attitude. things are going well right now, but what happens when things go bad? it’s hard to tell good religion in bad situations. the reason it is hard is because there is something called Jail-House religion. You really can’t tell whether it is authentic. if you want to know the authenticity of religion sometime you have to look and see what was happening before the hard times. You see, everybody goes to God when the bottom drops out. this is what was happening in the case of israel. when they were not in captivity, and had no misplacement they were not so religious when things were going well. when things are going good God has a hard time getting our attention. You see, when we are able to sing the lord’s song Gene Turner

www.dfwelitenews.com

when things are going good, you ought to be able to sing the lord’s song when things are not going so well, or when we are captive. sometimes God has to create an environment for our healing. sometimes God has to adjust the environment in a way that we may hear Him. sometimes He has to rearrange the furniture, set up a place maker, or a heart monitoring machine, or take a love one, take away some children, or let a marriage fall to pieces. sometimes God has to get our attention. in this situation, in this context of this song robbing experience, God got the attention of israel. let me see if we can give some points on how one can hold on to his/her joy in time of trouble. we believe you can sing the lord’s song, and hold to your JOY if you don’t let your location and situation obscure your destination. when you can hold on to your JOY is to affirm the sovereignty of God. whenever you are relocated in a different situation, just keep your mind in perspective order on where you are and what you are going through and know that’s some how you have not come to anything, but you are going through something and God somehow will intervene as only God can. You see, when you know God for yourself, it’s always in your mind that the “stOrM is PassiNG OVEr HallElUJaH”. it’s a terrible thing to meet somebody who has lost the joy in their lives because they are carrying around hatred, malice, envy and jealousy. they can’t sing the lord’s song. let us not forget to read our Bibles and may God bless you real good, and may He ever keep you in His loving care.

His Perfect Way

T

he world definitely trains us to take control. there even seems to be special rewards for those who can say, “i did it my way!” But the truth is, my way will always fall short of God’s desire. Our biggest struggle is often finding the balance which keeps us on His path and travGeraldine eling at His pace. Davidson-Hooker lack of faith causes us to lag behind, and our pride and desire to control causes us to try and push ahead. whether we lag or try to push ahead the result is a drift from God’s path. 2 Samuel 22:31 “as for God, His way is perfect; the word of the lord is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in Him.” these words are part of a song of praise King David sang to God. several times in his life David ventured out to do things his own way. Yet time after time he found that walking down God’s path was not only the best way, it was the perfect way. we obviously must learn this same lesson. we are given many options - many roads to travel as we seek a better way - but His narrow road is the only way to true life...the only road to peace and true contentment. living by God’s way requires constant renewal of faith and trust. it first requires faith in Jesus for the forgiveness of sin, and then complete trust as we continue down His path. while God’s way is definitely perfect, it’s not always easy to understand. His way will often conflict with what we just “know” is best. “the man who thinks he knows something does not yet know as he ought to know” (1 Corinthians 8:2). these times of apparent conflict are times to humbly increase our faith and better learn how to trust. the world’s way will continually do battle against this trust. Jesus said, “do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear” (Matthew 6:25). the world’s way says we will soon be hungry and naked; but God’s way says that as we trust Him with all our heart, we will soon find rest and peace; “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33). God has given each of us unique and wonderful gifts. But our gifts must be used along His path and for His glory, or they become nothing but “filthy rags” (isaiah 64:6). let’s stop seeking our way, with our goals and our desires. instead, let’s daily release to the guidance of the Holy spirit and boldly follow where He leads. let’s trust and walk each and every step according to His perfect way.

1:1-7; 2Cor. 5:17. Paul referred to the church at thessalonians as the elect of God. How did Paul know that these thessalonians were elected of God? He saw a change in their lives. the point was made that Jesus did not die to make men better; he died to make them new. the truth received in power shifts the bases of life from adam to Christ and a new set of motives goes to work within the soul. a new and different spirit enters the personality and makes the believing man new in every department of his being. the gospel is too often preached and accepted without power, and the radical shift which the truth demands is never made. there may be, a change of some kind; an intellectual and emotional bargain may be struck with the truth, but whatever happens is not enough, not deep enough, not radical enough. the “creature’: is changed, but he is not “new,” and right there is the tragedy of it. the gospel is concerned with a new life. Prayer Closet

t

hroughout the Bible we can see the necessity of prayer. Many of human failures can be attributed to prayerlessness. i can see and understand this more clearly when i Pastor Clarence Henderson study the life King saul in the Old testament and Judas iscariot in the New testament. they apparently did not pray. well, did Eve pray when the serpent approached her in the Garden of Eden? the great tragedy of David’s life came when he walked on the rooftop of his house and saw Bathsheba. we have no indication that he prayed to be delivered from the temptation he faced. On the other hand, the early church understood the necessity of prayer. in acts 6:2-4, they gave the word and prayer top priority. when we do likewise we too can gain victory over our many failures.

Camp wisdom road, Dallas, tX 75237. lueretha, an avid writer for years, began her career like many other great novelists. as time permitted, she would resign herself to a quiet place and write down her thoughts, observations and poems. Being a widely renowned and awarded psychotherapist, lueretha’s wealth of knowledge and life experiences pro-

vided a wellspring of inspiration for the burgeoning author. also like many authors, it was only after lueretha shared some of her writings with others that she was convinced by their encouragement to self publish her first book titled listening, an inspirational collection of poems. after the successful promotion of listening, lueretha turned her attention to a number of other titles she had begun working on for publication. Of her moving series and God Cried written in response to 9/11 former first lady laura Bush wrote, “Your poems are wonderful examples of the creativity and compassion expressed by americans since september 11, 2001,” she con-

tinued, “i admire the positive spirit of americans like you.” lueretha’s profound ability to evoke pure raw emotion with her writing is evidenced by the response from all who read her work! Now, with the release of her latest novel family reunion, lueretha taps into a much lighter side the human experience. the book is a delightful journey and exploration of the richness of family unity, that God-given capacity that we all too often fail to appreciate, embrace and grasp in our strained and emotionally stressed culture. Booker lets the reader take a look inside families and glimpse the pain, grief, laughter, joy, happiness,

he Dallas Mavericks won the NBa Championship, and for some reason the Miami Heat is recognized as the Champion. the Nfl picked its top 100 Leon Simon players and tom Brady won top honors, followed by Peyton Manning and Drew Brees; those were the top three players. Brady got the top spot because he’s won 3 super-Bowls, Brees and Manning only one each. that’s fair i thought. then i started thinking about that’s not a bad tie breaker. (super-Bowl wins). that works until it comes to Dallas’ sports and teams. let’s take a look. when asked who the greatest NBa player under the criteria has used in the Nfl’s top 100 you would say that Dirk Nowitzck is a better player than leBron James. Dirk was the playsoff MVP and he won the ring. But that don’t fly with the Dallas teams. if he’d played for the Knicks, Celtics or lakers he would be considered the best. Most of the Basketball season Pau Gasol (lakers) was considered the most skillful big man in the league; now they’re trying to get rid of him. when they say who’s the greatest running back in Nfl history? this is the one where there are as many names as players. i hear Eric Dickerson, Gayle sayers, Jimmie Brown, and the one i hear the most is probably Barry sanders. there is O.J. simpson, Earl Campbell, and all are great runners. with the exception of maybe Jimmie none of them ever played in a championship let alone won a ring. Emmitt smith’s got the most yards; the most rings and everything but you can’t get an argument that would last a year trying to convince someone that he’s the best. it’s a Dallas thing. the Cowboys are america’s team but that doesn’t help the players with their quest for post season or post career awards. Eric williams could be one of the best right tackles to ever play the game but his name never comes up for Hall of fame consideration. Ed Jones, Harvey Martin, larry allen, and Charles Haley; all have rings and arguably the best at their position but they are Cowboys and the Hall of fame is a long way. richard Dent is in the Hall. richard got one ring and he deserves to be there. Does he belong there ahead of Ed Jones, Harvey Martin? i don’t think so. i know for sure he doesn’t belong there ahead of Charles Haley and Charles has 5 rings, and was very instrumental in winning those Championships. as a matter of fact he was the last piece to the puzzle for the Cowboy’s last three super-Bowl wins. Charles’ chances are drifting away. i had a conversation with ex-steeler defensive end l.C. Greenwood. He thought that there were too many steelers in already. Believe me that won’t be Charles’ problem. it’s a Dallas thing with Charles, Ed, Harvey, Eric and larry.

ried a child in her womb, to see the birth of her child, to watch her baby grow and play every day, and to do something to hurt or harm her own flesh and blood. the thought of that just makes me sick. a florida jury of five men and seven women cleared anthony of the murder charges she faced in the 2008 death of her daughter, Caylee anthony, but found her guilty of lying to law enforcement officials about the incident. lying? i understand growing up as a little child you would lie to your parents if you did something wrong like cheating at school, kissing a boy, or stealing candy. But lying to cover up your missing child or a possible murder of your own child? for 10 hours over two days, a jury deliberated over anthony’s fate, ultimately finding her guilty of only four counts of lying to police, a pattern prosecutors said was consistent from the start. the not guilty verdict for Casey anthony on tuesday also can be seen as a victory for the U.s. justice system, despite strong public opinion that she killed her 2 yearold daughter, legal experts said. tenced Casey anthony on thursday morning for lying to police, giving her four years in jail and credit for the time she's already served since 2008. since she's already served time, court officials said anthony will be released from the Orange County Jail on July 13. she was fined $4,000, or $1,000 for each conviction. she also must pay $618 in other costs. Judge Perry will not release jurors names right now, but do you blame him? i don’t know about you but if i had a child that was missing for one hour and i didn’t know where he/she was, especially a baby, 911 would know my name and everything about my child. if you want my personal opinion, “i do think justice was served because the prosecution didn’t prove its case, but that’s just my opinion.” we all have one, what is yours?

ry Hot spring, arkansas. what better way to take a relaxing, yet fun-filled vacation than a quick drive to Hot springs, arkansas. Hot springs may be a quaint little town, but its history is vibrant, rich and exciting dating back as far 1807. its history intertwines the lives of presidents of the United states, some of the greatest sports legends, and the most notorious gangsters in america. what we thought would be a quiet relaxing getaway, turned into a fun-filled and very interesting few days. we shopped in the small downtown touristy area, which is right in the vicinity of bath house row. there was time for the famous bath/massages that are often spoken of, a few rounds of golf, shopping and a couple of tours. try Hot springs’ new landmark with its blazing fire, the “steakhouse.” the steakhouse is located at 2216 albert Pike road, in Hot springs; it’s open 7 days a week for lunch (11:30a-3:00p) and dinner (6:309:00p); early bird dinner special is from 5:306:30p. in 1832, President andrew Jackson made Hot springs the first federal reservation. it was the first piece of america protected for future generations. located along the forested southwestern slope of Hot springs Mountain, 47 “hot springs” gush forth nearly a million gallons of 143-degree water every day. today, the naturally pure water is used for thermal bathing and massage, and is also consumed as drinking water from free public springs in the downtown area. During the american “bathing experience” of the early 1900s, Hot springs was a popular destination for the rich and famous, drawing the likes of Babe ruth, andrew Carnegie and f.w. woolworth. Charles Maurice then purchased it, remodeled it, and reopened it as the Maurice Bathhouse, serving white patrons only. aside from management, the mainstay of the bath industry from early times was the bath attendant. Until the 1980s, most bath attendants were african american. Massage services were added in the bathhouses in the 1890s and later chiropodists. (www.hotspringschamber.com/visitor/history.asp.).
