The Mighty Kimball Knights We Are the Champions! By JorDan

n Thursday, March 10, 2011, at the Frank Erwin Center on the campus of the University of Texas, Coach Royce Snoop Johnson led the Kimball Knights to a win over Cedar Park High School in route to a state showdown with the Lamar Tigers. For the Kimball Knights basketball program in Dallas, Texas, the family affair continues. Legendary coach Goree Johnson piloted the Knights to state championships in 1996 and 1997. After Goree Johnson stepped down as Kimball’s head coach to become the Assistant Director of the Dallas Independent School District, Goree Johnson had a concourse at the Jesse Owens Memorial Complex named after him. Like father, like son, the head Coach at Kimball now is Royce Johnson, son of Goree Johnson. Royce Johnson served as prominent assistant coach on the 1996 and

1997 title winning teams under his father. Upon taking over the reigns of the Kimball program, Royce Johnson has followed well in his father’s footsteps, maintaining a level of excellence at Kimball, which also claimed a Texas state championship in 1990, under the late coach, Billy Tubbs. A prominent member of the 1990 Knights’ team was no other than Royce Johnson. Most of the time, we as fans and supporters of any particular The Kimball High School Boys Basketball Team Champs along high school think that when with coaches, Principal Earl Jones and Coach Royce “Snoop” Johnson teams make it to the state finals, in any sport, it all has to do with was only one that came out of the fire to the talent of that team during that particu- represent the Metroplex, Royce Snoop lar season. Restoring Broken Relationships Matthew 18:15-17 "If another believer sins against you, go privately and point out the fault. If the other person listens and confesses it, you have won that person back. But if you are unsuccessful, take one or two others with you and Henry nelson go back again, so that everything you say may be confirmed by two or three witnesses. If that person still refuses to listen, take your case to the church. If the church decides you are right, but the other person won’t accept it, treat that person as a pagan or a corrupt tax collector.”

ate one summer evening on an interstate, a weary truck driver pulled his rig into an all-night truck stop. The waitress had just served him when three tough looking, leather jacketed motorcyclist- of the Hell’s Angels type decided to give him a hard time. Not only did they verbally abuse him,

one grabbed the hamburger off his plate, another took a handful of his French fries, and the third picked up his coffee and began to drink it. How do you think he responded? He calmly rose, picked up the check, walked to the front of the room, put the check and his money on the cash register, and went out the door. The waitress followed him to put the money in the till and stood watching out the door as the big truck drove away into the night. When she returned, one of the bikers said to her, “Well, he’s not much of a man, is he?” She replied, “I do not know about that, but he sure is not much of a truck driver. He just ran over three motorcycles on his way out of the parking lot.” In today’s world it is littered with broken relationships. You have them in your families between husbands and wives, parents and children. You face them between employers and employees, with neighbors, different ethnic and social groups, between nations. What is the solution? Is there a way to repair the breech, to rebuild the bridge,

to restore the relationship? I believe God gives us a vital key to restore relationships. We do not talk about it much, but the Bible does. It is the key of humility. In essence, it is living out the Great Commandment to love God with all your heart and to love your neighbor as you love yourself. It means focusing on God and other people, not self. What are some of the causes of broken relationships? In a church where I used to attend two friends of mine had a broken relationship. One did some work for the other one, and it was not acceptable when it was finished. They have not spoken since, and they attend the same church. One is a believer and one is not. I do not know who is right and who is wrong or at fault. The Bible does not mention who is right or wrong only that reconciliation is necessary. However, the greater responsibility for reconciliation of a relationship is on the Christian. The cause can be direct or indirect, material or personal such as unkind words spoken wounding actions, misunder-

standing and good things undone. Here are some Biblical ways to restore broken relationships when the offender is not saved. The bible forbids retaliation in personal relationships. “Do not retaliate” Jesus is not so much saying what to do, as what not to do. Jesus goes on to say your convenience and possessions are less important than relationships. The mark of community true biblical unity is not the absence of conflict, but the presence of a reconciling spirit. You have to overlook minor offenses. Proverbs 17:9 says, “Overlook an offense and bond a friendship; fasten on to a slight and good-bye, friend! Proverbs 19:11 says, “A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense.” 1st Peter 4:8 says, “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins.” If you would like to have the full message please email me and request it at: revelations_75044@msn.com

Working in batches if necessary, cook the fillets, turning once, until the coating is golden and crisp and the fish is cooked through, 4 to 5 minutes per side. Transfer the fillets to a clean baking sheet lined with paper towels and keep warm in the oven. To assemble, arrange 2 pickle slices on the bottom half of each roll. Dallas ISD 2011-2012 Financial Outlook

T

he Dallas Independ ent School District is bracing for reduced funding from the State of Texas as the result of a severe revenue shortfall. The trustee lew shortfall from BlaCKBurn, the state will sigDistriCt 5 nificantly impact the district's 2011-2012 budget, as well as budgets for the foreseeable future. The initial, worst-case scenario for next school year indicates that Dallas will face a shortfall of $253 million, prompting possible layoffs of thousands of teachers and staff and reductions to vital education programs. In January, Dallas ISD joined with many other school districts across Texas in the “Make Education a Priority” campaign. The campaign calls for a commitment to fix the broken system of school finance and to adequately fund public education, which has been underfunded since 2006 when the state cut property taxes by one-third and failed to provide a revenue source to adequately cover the difference. At this time, the issue is in the hands of the Texas Legislature, which has until May to adopt its final budget. We will not know exactly what the district is facing until then, but Dallas ISD trustees are beginning now to look at ways to reduce the district’s budget. Since employees represent a majority of the district’s budget costs, we must consider reducing staff. At our February meeting, trustees approved an early resignation incentive that offered contracted employees

s

such as teachers and principals an incentive of up to $10,000 to submit their resignations by March 8, 2011. Eligible employees agreed to complete the current school year and the payout will not exceed $7 million. However, savings from this incentive will provide only so much relief. The district will realize additional savings by not filling vacant positions, but eventually some staff (both campus and central staff) and programs will be reduced under this funding scenario. Those decisions, while painful to make, are necessary to serve the best interests of the district’s students. Some ask how the district can construct new schools and add wings to existing campuses while facing a budget shortfall. The new construction and renovations are funded through the bond program approved by voters in 2008, and by law those funds cannot be used for other purposes. This work is part of our commitment to creating and maintaining safe learning environments – a perpetual process. Currently the district’s Web site features a clearinghouse to engage and inform the community in the creation of the 2011-2012 budget. The public is invited to visit www.dallasisd.org/finoutlook to review information and submit suggestions. Efforts to decide on the best course of action will occur over the next few months while district officials continue to call on the legislature to take action to restore some of the funds needed to avoid the most harmful reductions. The community is encouraged to speak with elected representatives to express support for the state to access its rainy day fund and authorize districts to employ furlough days, salary cuts and other measures to help school districts avoid changes that will hurt teaching and learning.

Plan to participate in community meetings about the budget throughout the spring. The dates and locations will be posted on the Web site and noted in future columns. Educate yourself about the issues and be vocal. We must work together to do our best in this difficult situation. Our children’s future is at risk. In other news around in district 5: District 5 will host an Academic Pep Rally for the A. Maceo Smith High School cluster schools at 9 a.m., Saturday, March 26, at A. Maceo Smith High School, 3030 Stag Rd. Students who have achieved 90s in their core subject classes will be eligible to win prizes. Students must bring their report cards, and parents or legal guardians must be present to receive the prize. There will also be prizes for parents and teachers. The event will celebrate District 5 schools’ academic excellence in math, science, English/language arts, and history/social studies. I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the 28 students in District 5 who signed college athletic scholarships on February 16. The signees hail from Pinkston High School, Franklin D. Roosevelt High School, A. Maceo Smith High School and South Oak Cliff High School. Among the scholarships that were signed with the 13 colleges and universities, 24 were football and four were basketball. Again, congratulations and the best of success in your future! I am available to meet with your organization to discuss the many successes with Dallas ISD in general, and District 5 in particular. Contact my office at 972-925-3722 for a list of schools in District 5 where you can volunteer as a tutor or mentor, or to schedule my visit.

stem from meetings conducted with area developers and research into best practices in cities around the world. Examples of the tools might include: • A new temporary-use permit that is a hybrid between the city's current Special Events permit and a LongTerm Use permit. They would be used for interim, temporary or seasonal use businesses and events like art shows, pop-up cafes, and holiday decoration stores, etc. • Revised parking guidelines that will let the driver decide where to park when patronizing a business rather than forcing each business to offer a set amount of parking spaces regardless of whether they are open or not • More flexible landscaping requirements that encourage responsible use of our precious water resources and make sense for more compact urban neighborhoods like those that will become urban innovation zones.

3) OFFER CONCIERGE SERVICES. The Council will work with City staff to identify concierges whose job it will be to streamline the permitting and licensing processes for developers wanting to build or renovate in an Urban Innovation Zone 4) ANALYZE WHAT WORKS. Once a set of tools have been approved by the Dallas City Council and applied to the Urban Innovation Zone, the City will watch to see which ones are effective and which are not (timeframe to be determined). 5) ROLL OUT NEW URBAN INNOVATION ZONES ACROSS DALLAS. Natinsky will work with fellow Council members and business/community and neighborhood leaders to replicate the City Design Studio process in similar neighborhoods around the city. The goal is to apply the successful tools there and perhaps test other innovative tools as well, based on other neighborhoods’ specific goals and objectives.

Advice Column: Ask Karen Hollie More Than Grasshoppers

A

geralDine DaviDson-HooKer

fter Moses led the Israelites out of Egyptian slavery, they were guided by God to the edge of Canaan the land promised to Abra-ham. God in-structed Moses to send twelve men to explore the land; "See what the land is like and whether the people who live there are strong or weak, few or many"

(Numbers 13:18). The twelve "spies" traveled through the entire length of Canaan and brought back their report. All twelve traveled the same path, but only Joshua and Caleb saw the land and its inhabitants through the promises of God: "The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good. If the Lord is pleased with us, He will lead us into that land" (Numbers 14:7-8). The other ten saw great danger and an enemy who was too big to be defeated. The Promised Land was truly a land flowing with milk and honey, but it was also a land with many enemies. Joshua and Caleb saw the same enemy as the other ten spies, but they had a much clearer view and understanding of God. They knew if God was on their side, the size and strength of the enemy didn't matter - God would provide the victory. We often face the same fear as the other ten. God wants us to enter into His promised land, take possession, and reside there for the rest of our days; but there are often enemies which fill us with fear and make us feel small and insignificant. Enemies may come in the form of addictions, choices of entertainment, finances, or worldly priorities. We may even face more tangible enemies who threaten to cause us physical or emotional pain. All these enemies keep us out of the Promised Land; all appear to be undefeatable giants. But with God on our side, ALL can be overcome! Without a clear understanding of who we are in Christ, every enemy appears to tower over us; "apart from God you can do nothing." Apart from Him we ARE but grasshoppers. But when we place our trust in God and allow Him to work through us, our posture before the enemy is greatly strengthened; "In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us" (Romans 8:37). God's land of promise - the contentment of His presence - is waiting for us to enter in and take possession. God did not create us to be fearful insects, but an image of the Most High! Let's know the One who gives us strength and victory in battle. Let's better understand that when God leads, we are much more than grasshoppers!

he greatest and best thing that happens when we pray is that we are changed and transformed; maybe not in one prayer experience, but certainly through Pastor ClarenCe the days and the HenDerson years. It is unfortunate that most of us have a narrow, childish concept of prayer. We think of it as asking some special favor and getting it; we treat it as though it does not involve a spiritual relationship of man with God and God with man. Blessed is the man who pray; “Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!” Thou art the potter; and I am the clay. Mould me and make me after Thine own will, while I am waiting, yielded and still.

“Qualifications of Worship Leaders” 1Tim.3:1-13 was our church school lesson. This letter was written by the Apostle Paul to Timothy his son in the ministry who was left in elD lloyD t. Ephesus to overMorgan see the church there and establish leadership for them. Qualifications for those that would be “Bishop’s” or “Deacons” in the church are established here. The Bishop is the same as those that serve as Elders or pastors in today’s church; it is from the Greek word which means “an overseer”. As always we tried to relate the lesson to today we asked “How many churches follow these guidelines today” and if they did would our churches be better served. The lesson was about the persons who occupied the office not the duties of the office. Every pastor or deacon would do well to ask

himself does he measure up to these qualifications, is he more concerned about character transformation than about the ABC’s of ministry— “Attendance, buildings, and cash.” The deacons are required to meet the same qualifications as the Bishop accept being apt to teach. The Morning message was delivered by Pastor Morgan from the subject “Someone who cares” Ps. 34:1517. Life is filled with up’s and down’s and there are times when we all like to know that there is someone we can depend on. Sometimes the person that said you can count on them find themselves helpless, but God not only promises to help but have the power to help under any circumstances. There is not a moment that the eyes of the Lord are not upon his people and his ears open to their cry. Believer, take comfort, He that promised is able to do far more that you can think or ask. This Sunday afternoon the Greater New Mt. Pilgrim church will be our guest, the message will be delivered by Dr. Johnny King. Be blessed

BaRBeRshOp Talk wiTh leON simON After a loss to the New Orleans Hornets, Coach Rick Carlisle called his team that dreaded word “soft”. That’s a name that most pros leon siMon hate. That not just basketball, that’s Golf, Tennis, Swimming and even Track. That’s a name that goes back a long ways with the Mavs. I hadn’t heard it in a while. So I ask was it the proper term for this team? I’m sure there were some players that took exception. Jason Terry was one of the ones that spoke out. Next game they tried to show a different animal, they put a good one on the Knicks one of the hottest teams in the league. In comes the L.A. Lakers that ugly demon raised his ugly head again. The Cowboys had to go through the same thing. They even earned the name “Next years Champion.” Every sport that’s played in this world, when your opponent questions your man-hood you’ve got an uphill battle. Last week I displayed great confidence in the Mavericks saying I thought they would play in the last game of the year. That’s still a possibility, but Rick’s got me thinking. This wasn’t the Hornets or the Lakers this was the coach for the Mavs. James Donaldson said he told Roy Tarpley when he first came in the league to set a side a couple grand, to pay a fine and deck the first guy that

disrespects you. Championships comes after showing your metal. I have no idea why Carlisle said that. Was it a ploy to get them to play harder? But it’s one I haven’t seen used before. It’s going to be very hard to win when a team knows they can throw you off your game by giving you an extra shove on lay ups. When David West starts shoving you best player around and there is no one to extract a pound of flesh to let them know “this you don’t ever do”. In hockey they have guys to make sure that doesn’t happen. In the animal kingdom they growl to let you know you’re in dangerous territory. It’s their way of letting the potential aggressor know to proceed at your own peril. I think the Mavericks at this point are as hospitable as some hotel chains. You have to have a Rick Mayhorn type or Bill Laimbeer if your star player gets intimidated by rough housing type play. I thought against the Lakers the Mavericks entire front line period got pushed around and out hustled at home. If you can’t defend home court in play offs what’s the use in having it. The top teams start getting tough at the all-star game or shortly thereafter. The Celtic’s told the Lakers no more lay-ups during the Larry Bird, Magic Johnson era. That’s probably why Dirk Nowitski is never thought of in that upper crust of stars . That was the one thing that Magic, Larry, Wilt and Michael had; that mental and physical toughness.

ing loss is that Kimball would surely be back in years to come and Royce Snoop Johnson and the Kimball Knights made good on their bet, they would be back. Playing in the Class 4A state tournament wasn’t exactly a new experience for Dallas Kimball High School or their head coach Royce Johnson. The Knights were in Austin back in 2009, but thanks to a 51-42 win over Dallas Lincoln last weekend in the 4A Region II final, Kimball was able to return to the state capital and on Thursday night, faced Cedar Park in one state semi-final. The Knights were led by a 6-foot6 senior, Jordan Williams, who spent his first two years at Lincoln before transferring to Kimball. However, Williams wasn’t the only weapon Johnson had. Kimball had a senior-laden lineup with the likes of Austin Franklin, Jarion Henry and Jalen Jones. Only Shannon Lilly is a junior. At 36-3 overall and one of the five best teams in 4A, Kimball was the best bet to win the state championship. One thing that is evident in the basketball program is we still have teachers and coaches see

little Known BlaCK History By: Bettye williaMs “Katt” Before there was Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles, there was Thomas Wiggins, aka Thomas Bethune or Blind Tom. Wiggins entertained large crowds in the 19th century. Born a slave in 1849, he was purchased at two years old, along with his parents, Charity and Mingo Wiggins, by James Neil Bethune, a prominent Georgia lawyer and anti-abolitionist. Wiggins was blind and autistic but a musical genius with a phenomenal memory. Music fascinated him and he could pick out tunes on the piano and reproduce them by the time he was four. By the age of six Wiggins was improvising on the piano and composing music. He made his concert debut at eight-years-old in Atlanta. Eventually Wiggins could recite any poem and play any piece of music on the piano after hearing it only once. Mark Twain called him an 'inspired idiot,' who could 'play two tunes (on the piano) and sing a third at the same time, and let the audience choose the keys he shall perform in.'

The Mighty Kimball Knights We Are the Champions!... continued from page 9 who really care about what happens to our kids. Royce Snoop Johnson is just another example of when you prepare off the court you can easily win on the court. Kimball has been relentless all year playing the likes of South Oak Cliff, Lincoln, and Woodrow Wilson. In other words, the Knights took on all comers. Coach Johnson believes in getting into the fire early so that it readies his team to get to the ultimate goal – the championship; but not to just get there, but to win. Coach Snoop Johnson said, “The whole team is important but the guard trio was overlooked all season and did an outstanding job on the floor for the final game. Every time I

talk to people they talk about the big 3. I used to ask them, what big three are you talking about? Most would be talking about Kimball’s front court that features 3 division 1 recruits, Jordan Williams, Jalen Jones and Jarion Henry. The Kimball Knights could not have won without Oscar Lewis and fellow guards Shannon Lilly and Austin Franklin who were a big reason it was such a good win.” Oh! Let’s not forget the best fans in the country, the Kimball High School supporters, including Kimball’s loyal parents who are always in attendance. This year’s title win is a great example of overcoming many obstacles throughout the season. Hats off to Coach Royce Snoop Johnson and the Kimball Knights for a job well done. We will see you on Saturday, March 26, 2011, with a parade in your honor – you deserve the best. You are the champions my friends! Coach Royce Johnson 2009-10 Overall Record: 31-7 (Region II Finalists) The Knights return four starters from last year’s 30-win team, including two players ranked among the best in the state (Jordan Williams and Jarion Henry). Kimball’s Coach Royce Johnson played for the school’s 1990 state title team and is entering his 12th season coaching the team. Acie Law (Memphis Grizzlies) and Quinton Ross (New Jersey Nets) are alums of the program.

Welcome to the w e e ke n d , baaaaaaaaby! Ya don't have to be on the "Psychic Hotline" to correctly predict the war tonight at the American Airlines Center between the 1st Place San Antonio Spurs and the 2nd place Dallas Mavericks Kevan Browning The Mav's are hot and the Spurs are the only team with a better record in the Western Conference.. Saturday night it's all about brims, Gators, Stacy Adams along with complete coordinating outfits (Suit, Shirt, tie, Hankie, pinkie rings, and matching hats) will be in effect for the BoBBy Blue annual Dallas BlanD Blues Fest at the Dallas Convention Center... I'd get there and get comfortable about 6PM...People watching before the show is a must!!! The concert features Bobby Blue Bland, Shirley Jones, Jay Blackfoot, Mel Waiters, Floyd Taylor,Theodis Ealy, Sir Charles Jones and more...At press time there were still a few pairs of seats!Sunday night, if ya gotta get out, check out Snoop Dogg at Dallas House Of Blues...Snoop was last seen floating somewhere over Indiana, but count on him here Sunday night at 7PM!!! Looks like an awesome fun weekend is at hand!!! Wow! Shaunie Oneal has given the inside scoop on Basketball Wives! "I did think Royce was like the wild card at first and she kind of was,” Shaunie admitted. “We opened up season 1, and she was doing the booty dance and after she did that it, I knew it was on with these ladies...Shaunie added that Reed can’t talk about Dwight Howard, however she has established her own fan base: “There are some people out there that love Royce.” Meanwhile, Antoine Walker's

Now that the restraining order's been lifted...Chris Brown says..HOLD UP!! It’s been two years now since that fateful day Brown beat his now ex-girlfriend Rhianna black and blue. He hasn’t stopped apologizing for it, until now. The singer/dancer said it’s time for the world to move on and let him live his life and she hers. “At the end of the day, if I walk around apologizing to everybody, I’m gonna look like a damn fool,” he shared. “People are always gonna talk,” he continued. “But I’m in a positive place. I consider myself a grown-ass man.” The singer has completed his hours of domestic violence classes, spent 180 hours of hard labor and is currently serving five years probation. Look for his fourth album, entitled “F.A.M.E.”, set to debut this Tuesday. Prayers for the 15-year-old daughter of the late A.J.
