ack in 1975, on a cold wintry night, the last Friday in February, Dr. Bill Blair honored the first class of the Elite News awards night at Calvary Philadelphia Baptist Church. Rev. Bell was senior pastor at that time. On that night in 1975, one of the first honorees was [add name], “Let me speak to the manager,” which aired on Channel 8. He was one of many in the first class, and 36 years later, Dr. Blair has honored over 1800 individuals throughout the community. People who would normally not be recognized or noticed, he finds them.

If they don't win it's a shame. For it's one, two, three strikes you're out at the old ball game. You know the song, right! Well, I’ve been singing that song ever since Saturday morning when the Elite News, and the Dallas Baseball Alliance hosted a Baseball Clinic at Rochester Park, located at 3000 Municipal Street. Rochester Park was the site chosen by the Dallas Park and Recreation Department being considered Dr. William “Bill” Blair, Jr. Ballpark.

Seven Habits of Holy People

Henry neLSon

I

1st Peter 1:1516 “But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."

n 1989, a book hit the shelves that was destined to become a best seller. It was geared toward giving people the tools they needed to enjoy powerful and effective living. The book is saturated with advice on leadership, life management and relationships, all centered on the “inside-out” concept that old behavior is learned, it is not instinctive. Old habits can be discarded and replaced by new and effective habits. That book, written by Stephen R. Covey, is “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.” The habits he

outlined are; Initiative, Creativity Productivity, Interdependence, Empathy, Valuing Differences and Consistency. Let me ask you a question “If you were to describe yourself in one word, what would that word be?" According to Covey, If you exhibit these seven habits in your daily life, you could rightly describe yourself in the one word, “Effective” How does scripture want us to be able to define ourselves? Be Holy. Why? Because God is Holy, but the question then becomes, “How can I know if I am ‘Holy’ or not?” Just as Stephen Covey outlined the seven habits of highly effective people, tonight I want to outline for you; The Seven Habits of Highly Holy People. These will serve as a measuring stick to help you determine the areas in your life that are in need of strengthening. Habit #1 Highly Holy People understand Scripture as the guide for their daily lives. Psalm 1:1-2 says, “Blessed is the

man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.” Highly Holy People Love God’s word. They cannot get enough of it. They base their lives on it. It is a part of them. They know that it has the power to protect them from all kinds of junk in life. Psalm 119:11 says, "I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you." And they share it whenever possible. Habit #2 Highly Holy People daily seek God in prayer. 1st Thessalonians 5:16 says, “Pray continually.” If your lives are to be defined as “Holy” you must be a people of prayer. Why? Because prayer is your half of a lifelong conversation with God? It is how you develop a relationship with the creator of the universe. My Grandparents were holy people in the area of prayer. I can still remember hearing grand312ma and grandpa practically screaming their

Young people, singles, men and women you should all have set times of prayer, because it is understood that a life of prayer leads to a life of holiness. Prayer is a Habit with Highly Holy People. Amen! Habit #3 Highly Holy People are devoted to following Christ no matter what. 2nd Timothy 2:8-9a says, “Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel, for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. Highly Holy People realize that being a Christian is not always a cakewalk, but they do it anyway because of their devotion to Christ and

Let’s Play Ball... continued from front page blocks down the street from my childhood home in Ennis, Texas. My siblings and I took great joy in playing the sport of baseball and softball. And whether you believe it our not, I used to be one heck of a third baseman before a knee injury sidelined me. Our summers were full of “road trips” to Corsicana, Kerens, Waco, Terrell, Kaufman, Lancaster, etc. And if you could have seen me on Saturday, I was ginning from ear to ear. It did my heart good to see you children running and playing, laughing, slipping and sliding enjoying the game of baseball. But, then my joy and excitement turned to sadness and somber. It caused me to wonder and think back to the last time I’ve seen young African American boys and girls actually playing the sport of baseball? And then I started to ask why are our kids, young black boys and girls not playing the sport of baseball? Why is it that our children are leaving “America’s game?”

young African American boys and girls involved again in the game of baseball. It was at this baseball clinic that I got answers to the questions I asked. First of all, I found out that many of our children are no longer playing the game of baseball because in Texas football is king and it is a game that can be played and played well with physical talent. And, while colleges and universities offer full-time scholarships to play football, there is no such thing as a full scholarship in baseball. If you are lucky enough to get a baseball scholarship, it will only be a partial

name athletes who didn’t play football until well into middle school. Some didn’t start to play the game until their high school years. But, that is not the case in baseball. You see, many of our kids start out playing baseball in little leagues and as they get older, their interest in the game of baseball dwindles, and they stop playing the game. But in order to become good at it and to master the game you have to play it and practice it all the time! And as I watched the former Major Leaguers put the boys and girls through their paces, I discovered the experts were right! Before any of the boys and girls could run the bases, they had to first learn how to hold their bats to hit the balls. You have to know how to catch and throw a baseball. And honestly, the professional scouts don’t go to the traditional “Black schools” “biLL” bLair where the sport is still being played on the collegiate level. When is the last time you saw a pro scout at Prairie View, Grambling, Southern, Jarvis College, Texas Southern University? They’re going to the Division 1 schools, where baseball scholarships are few and not being offered to African Americans. Lastly, I discovered that we as parents don’t encourage our children to

We want to thank Pastor Joe Moore and the Calvary Philadelphia Church Family for being such gracious hosts and making us welcome to enjoy ourselves and Jesus on this evening,” said Lola Searcy, Elite News staff writer who gave the welcome address. The Full Gospel Holy Temple Church choir started the evening off right, by rendering “foot stomping,” “hallelujah” songs of praise. After a brief introduction, the honorees were presented their awards. Ke’Tarrious Bouchum, the Jordan R. So, according to Dr. Blair, they will always know what time it is. The O.D. Epps Praise Dancers ministered to the congregation in dance. Thank you to Jordan Blair, his lovely wife Brenda, and Corey Toney for the delicious refreshments! We want to say a special “thank you” to Dr. William “Bill” Blair for lending the weight of his newspaper to honor and pay tribute to those men, women and young adults who continue to do what they do for the church, the community, and the city where they live, work and worship! “The Elite News Awards Night ceremony started in the church, and the ceremony will always be held in the church. And I am already looking for next year’s class of recipients,” said Dr. Blair.

od is never late when He comes. He always comes on time. Have you ever done something on a moment’s notice? And after everything is all over, and you have a chance to think about what you have done whether it was right or not. Sometimes we do something’s on impulse, without giving it another thought, and when we come to ourselves we began to get scared about what we did because of repercussions. We might say, well, maybe I should not have done what I did, because now all hell is going to break loose on me. Well, don’t feel like the Lone Ranger, because most people have, even Abraham. You remember when four kings seized war against Sodom and Gomorra? These four kings seized all the goods of Sodom and Gomorra, took away women and men. In the taking away of the people, they took Lot and his family. When the news came to Abraham, he gathered up all his servants and took off to rescue Lot, because Lot was his flesh and blood, so Abraham did that on an impulse. Now the catch is: He knew he should never have won the battle, because first of all his men were not trained to fight in a battle, and they were out numbered besides. Have you ever accomplished something even though the odds were against you 2 to 1 that you would fail, but due to the Almighty God you over came the struggle of whatever it was? Then when you were able to think about it, fear comes upon you, and you began to worry just like Abraham did after defeating those four kings and gene tuner

rescuing his nephew, Lot. Abraham knew he should not have won the battle, but God made the difference and he knew it. I can almost hear him saying, “Lord you have fought my battle for me and now these guys are going to seek revenge on me and destroy me at the very first chance they get.” When this happen God always know when to come. He knows our mind the same as he knew what Abraham was thinking. The Bible says, after this the word of the Lord came to Abraham in a vision. God said exactly what Abraham needed to hear at a particular time because there was a crisis in his life; and God said fear not, I am your shield. Abraham knew what he meant, just as we understand if God described himself as our bomb shelter or personal flack jacket. He would stand between his servant and any spears or flying arrows flung at him, God would protect Abraham. God also added these words; I am thy exceeding great reward. What did God mean by these words? He meant that He was giving Abraham the greatest gift of all, himself. When he said: I am thy reward,” he meant precisely that. God knew that Abraham would be satisfied with nothing less. What would a material gift mean to a man with his wealth? He had already turned down everything Sodom had to offer, and God’s material blessing he had gotten them all along. So, God gave himself to Abraham the same way he gave His life at Calvary for us. Any Christian who will totally trust God. God will give Himself to that person. Eternal security can be seen here. Who can say Abraham was right in what he did? But, he was God’s man and God’s grace more abounds your faults. Remember to read our Bibles, may God bless you REAL GOOD and may He ever keep you in His loving care.

Advice Column: Ask Karen Hollie The Flight of the Butterfly

D

geraLdine daVidSon-HooKer

uring elementary school I remember learning about the stages in the butterflies’ development. First the egg is laid, that later becomes a larva, which then develops into a caterpillar. As a pupa, the caterpillar attaches itself to a leaf and proceeds to spin a cocoon

around its body. What was once seen as a biology lesson became a life changing awareness. The natural had become supernatural as my eyes were opened to a life changing metaphor. To the observer, the butterfly’s struggle to break free from the confines of the cocoon may seem unfair. Consequently, the observer may find themselves saying, “Why must the butterfly struggle so? Why not has an easier or softer way for the butterfly to escape the cocoon? The butterfly’s predicament just does not seem fair.” To break free from the cocoon the butterfly needs to undergo a struggle. To fly the butterfly has to free itself from the confines of the cocoon. To free itself from the cocoon the butterfly has to expand its wings. To find freedom the butterfly needs to expand its wings with enough force to break through the walls of the cocoon. And so the lesson was learned. Apart from struggle the butterfly would be constrained by the cocoon. Apart from struggle the butterfly would be unable to fly. Apart from the struggle, the butterfly would be unable to meet the possibilities of the day. Apart from the struggle, the butterfly would never experience freedom. Change through struggle prepares you and I to move beyond the constrains of our perceived limitations — in ways that work for us. Change through struggle prepares you and me for opportunities that would otherwise not be available to us. Change through struggle opens our eyes to the possibilities that exist. So rejoice when you encounter change through struggle. Your destiny is being formed within you. You are not walking in darkness. The eyes of your understanding are being opened. You are beholding what is being formed in you. You are realizing that the process is meant for your good and not for your harm — and you are encouraged.

Let’s play Ball... continued from page 3 play baseball. And since there are not an abundance of scholarships being offered for them to play baseball, we encourage football and basketball. So, here’s the plan as we go forward with the renaming project. We want to invite parents, especially African American parents to get their children involved in America’s game again! Plans are already underway for another clinic in the very near future! Call us here at Elite News and find out how you can get your children involved in America’s game! The Elite News would like to thank the Dallas Park and Recreation department and Mr. Kevin Moore for considering Rochester Park to rename in Dr. Blair’s honor. To all of our friends at Dallas

Baseball Alliance, Truth Baseball League, Dallas Baptist University’s Baseball Team, Anthony Coleman, Mr. R. Lamar Brooks, Danny Jordan, Bryan Clark, John Darjean, Bernard Walker, Kenny Gilbert, Bill Carlson and performance trainer Kyle Meadows and all of the parents who came out and brought their children out to enjoy the clinic! A very special “thank you” to Kroger for providing the hot dogs, and all the trimmings! We learned about the game of baseball, we met new friends and we ate all the hot dogs and chips, and drank all the punch we could until they were all gone! For more information on the ballpark renaming project, and to find out how you can “PLAY BALL” call us at 214.372.6500!

HE NFL scouting combine is in full swing. Every team in the league is there looking to improve themselves. Leon Simon As I watched as many kids as I could; I had a preconceived idea of what the Cowboys should draft. Understand I didn’t say what they needed, I said what they should draft. Marc Ingram running back from Alabama, as far as needs they need every position on the field from the inside linebackers all the way to the goal. The 2 outside backers and the 3 down lineman can be tolerated, the other six need replacing. If memory serves, the Cowboys were in a similar situation in 1990. They had a list of linebackers and defensive backs they coveted. While they were unable to obtain their wish list, a 5’ 9 ½ “ 216 running back almost fell in their lap. Emmitt Smith’s name was announced at Valley Ranch, it was received by a collective “what are they doing” from the media locally and nationally. In those days, that was pretty much the response to everything they did. By the way, when you listen to these Talk Shows today don’t let them tell you that Jimmie Johnson was perceived as a genius. Emmitt was the final piece to that championship run. Every team the Cowboys played in the 90’s, when asked what did they have to do to beat Dallas? Their response was

always the same. “Stop number 22 and we might have a chance”. Emmitt was the first and only running back in NFL history to win a Super Bowl, NFL MVP, NFL rushing title, and Super Bowl MVP in the same year. I guess by now you realize I was a big Emmitt Smith fan. Let me throw another little tidbit in here. One of only two non-kickers in NFL history to score over 1000 points, the other one is Jerry Rice. The similarities are frightening between the two – Emmitt and Marc. Both are 5’9 ½. Emmitt listed at 216 – Marc 215. Marc ran the 40 yd dash in the 4.5 area not a flyer for sure, but last years average in the first 10 yds. Was 1.6. Marc’s first 10 yds; 1.53; that’s not bad. It wouldn’t hurt to throw in the fact that the young man led Alabama to a National Championship and won a Heisman Trophy in 2010. Folks the Cowboys don’t have a running back, and I’m not going in to detail on that. I’ve done that to many times. Even if they had one, anytime you get a chance to pick a player that’s got Hall of Fame credentials you get him regardless the position. You think the 49’ers need a quarterback when they brought in Steve Young in to back up Joe Montana? Did Green Bay need Aaron Rodgers to back up Brett Favre? A good runner keeps the heat off Tony Romo; and makes that porous offense line look like they can play. You can pick up the rest of your needs in free agency and the rest of the draft.

Notes From Union Hope “Coming of the son of man” Mark 13:14-27 was the church school lesson. The disciples asked Jesus about the signs of his return. This is a question that many have tried to answer for years. Some eLd LLoyd t. have ventured to morgan set forth a definite day or year that he would return, those days and years have come and gone and Jesus have not returned. Jesus said that no man knows; neither he nor the angels only his father. The sad thing is that it seems that the church is no longer living in expectation of his return but is more concerned about the here and now. JESUS forecasts some of the awful terror of the siege and the final fall of Jerusalem. He warned that at the first signs of it people ought to flee,

not even waiting to pick up their clothes or try to save their goods. Josephus tells the story of that terrible siege by Titus in AD 70 in the fifth book of The Wars of the Jews. He tells us that 97,000 were taken captive and 1,100,000 perished by slow starvation and the sword. The prophecy that Jesus made of terrible days ahead for Jerusalem came true. The sermon was delivered by Pastor L.T.Morgan from the subject “The church under siege 2000 years later” 2Peter 3:10-18. We were reminded of how far removed the “church” that Jesus died to establish is today from what it was originally. What happened, how did the church become so earth bound that it is only a shell of the church established on the day of Pentecost? Jude 4 tells us “For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. Be Blessed

Though the great Jesse Owens has been credited as America’s first great black track and field athlete to win a gold medal for the U.S., many have forgotten the name and triumph of John Baxter Taylor Jr. Taylor was the first African-American to win a gold medal in the 1908 Olympics in London and the first to win with a U.S. Olympic team. He took his place as captain of his track team in high school and set a record in the one-mile interscholastic relay championship while at prep school. By 1903, Taylor held the world quarter-mile record for interscholastic athletics. Between 1904 and 1908, Taylor’s run times were the fastest recorded in the world. His stride, the longest of any runner at the time, was eight feet, six inches. The New York Times stated that he was "the world's greatest Negro runner."

Caraway Takes the Lead as Dallas Mayor by Jordan

A

bLair

ccording to history, Dallas has had 60 mayors and only 2 of them have been African American, Ron Kirk and now Dwaine Caraway. Mayor Tom Leppert’s decision to resign and run for the senate elevated then Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway to the position that he had been groomed to take over and preside. Mayor Caraway said he would provide a stable and seamless transition administration, and continue to focus on reducing crime, attracting companies, jobs and investment to Dallas, and work to balance the budget while minimizing the impact on city services. Elected in 2007, Caraway represents Council District 4. The Council elected him to Deputy Mayor Pro Tem in 2007 and Mayor Pro Tem in 2009. Caraway chairs the Council’s Public Safety Committee. Prior to his service on the Council, Caraway served as Vice President of the Dallas Park Board. Mayor Caraway’s work in District 4 should speak for itself. He has continued to make the lives and services of the constituents of District 4 better than it ever has been. You might not agree with him on everything, but at the end of the day, District 4 is a better district because of the work he’s done on a consistent basis in that dis-

trict.

For the next 4 months, as he sits at the helm of the City of Dallas, we expect nothing but the same service that he has given to District 4, and the City of Dallas should feel good about his leadership and what he brings to the table. One of the focal points in Mayor Caraway’s body of work has been the construction of a $3 million dollar Cedar Crest golf course and club house. He has also worked diligently to enhance the Dallas Zoo. If you ask most people what stands out about Mayor Caraway they would tell you that he has consistently worked with the kids, not only in District 4, but throughout the city. He has mentored, tutored, taught and made available educational opportunities for the children. Lance McCaskill, a young man mentored by Caraway, had this to say in an open letter he wrote to the City Council and to the citizens of Dallas, “As you already know, I have been very appreciative of Mr. Caraway and the incredible opportunity I had to work with him that exceeded any of my expectations. One thing that has always stood out to me during the short time I have known him is the approach he has taken towards children. Instead of working against them, I admire his position on trying to work with them. From the Dallas Youth Council to the National Civil Rights Museum trip to Dallas Art Festivals, Mr. Caraway helps underprivileged kids realize their potential and the opportunities that lie above their limited perspectives and reveal to them the opportunities to become successful in this world. Children in Mr. Caraway’s district face issues on a daily basis that are starkly different than the issues faced by children in other parts of Dallas, Texas, and across our nation. Mr. Caraway’s vision serves as a light that can be carried not only to other cities facing the same problem, but to families in how they respond to their own children. Whether parents realize it or not, children notice everything adults do. Thank you Mayor Pro Tem Caraway for standing up for what is right and doing the right thing despite how much negative opposition you receive from it. I admire your heart for children and for the Lord. I thank the Lord for the work that you have done and are continuing to do in the City of Dallas. Please (from one brother in Christ to another) continue to reflect His glory and do the right/good things that honor Him.” There was a community reception for newly appointed Mayor Dwaine Caraway that was attended by former city council people, community activist, business men, former mayors and a list of who’s who, to support Mayor Caraway in his endeavors.

elcome to the weekend, Baaaaby! This Sunday will be a day to remember. Yes you'll probably go to church, have a good meal, and get a nap. You can climax your perfect weekend at T B A A L ' S Community Memorial Tribute KeVan browning to the late Gwen Hargrove. It all starts at 5P.M. and is a worthy event for a woman who gave and gave and gave to the Arts in Dallas and played an integral role in the success of The Black Acade-my Of Arts And Letters over the years! The second and third hottest tickets in town are Friday and Sundays Dallas Mavericks games... Tonight the PeJa Indiana Pacers are in town. Sunday, StoJaKoVicH those athletic, young Memphis Grizzlies visit the American Airlines Center! Looks like the Mavs, who've recently added dead-eye shooter and 6'9" small forward Peja Stojakovich are on a roll, winning 15 out of the last 16...I believe this is the best Mavs team of all time and with strong Big man play from Tyson Chandler and Brendan Heyward in the middle, the sky is the limit for these Mavs... Big ups to manager Ron Washington and Rangers, who've opened Spring training in out in Arizona. We lost ace Cliff Lee, but the Rangers look like they are ready to defend their American League Championship! Here's an example of how mature men need to speak to younger brotha's, based on the life experiences of these Men! During Tuesday night’s conversation on PBS with Tavis Smiley, Smokey Robinson shared what he told singer El DeBarge t, who just recently on the eve of going on tour with artist Kem, checked into rehab for what some are saying is a drug relapse. Smiley asked what one says to a singer like El who has a gift but is struggling trying to get through. Robinson had this to say: “I love El. We’re brothers man. I had this conversation with El ten years ago because I

myself went through that (drug) trip, you (Smiley) know about it. What I didn’t realize is that this could happen to me. … Drugs do not discriminate because they don’t care who you are or what you’re doing or where you’re going. Prayers for El, Blessings and Respect to Smokey! Look out for the Beyonce interview in the new Cosmopolitan magazine... Beyonce Knowles gets candid about what makes her feel sexy. The singer says she likes to put on some pumps and a freakum dress when she wants to seduce her husband Jay-Z. “You should put on good music and something that makes you feel great. I love a pair of high, sexy stilettos with a beautiful dress, but you have to find out what works for you – whether it’s doing the whole smoky eyes thing or a natural look,” she says in the issue. “And never be predictable. Mix it up, surprise him, change your hair – be the woman he knows with a little bit of a twist.” Awwww, Shuckey Duckey, quack, quack, lol!!! Speaking of relationships, sometimes, like in the case of Christina Aguilera, they end badly in a divorce...Ladies i know it's hard...That's why Ms. "A" needs your prayers! TMZ is reporting that Christina Aguilera was arrested in West Hollywood early this morning for being sloppy drunk in public. The singer and her new boyfriend, Matthew Rutler, were both taken into custody by LAPD, the website reported. Aguilera was booked on a misdemeanor charge of public intoxication and Rutler was held for driving under the influence. It's been a rough stretch. You may remember her forgetting the words to the National Anthem at Super Bowl 45!!! Ready for the latest cast of Dancing With The Stars??? How about Wendy Williams, Lil’ Romeo, Pittsburg Steeler Hines Ward, Playboy Bunny and reality star Kendra Wilkinson and Alley and Sugar ray Kirstie Sugar Ray Lenoard Lenoard are among the stars participating! Wendy has promised to use all of her curves for good and not evil...Thank You Wendy!!! Happy Birthday to YOU and Celebs this week: Harry Belafonte is 87,Bobby Womack is 67, Ron Howard is 57, Herschel Walker and Jackie Joyner-Kersee49, Wrestler Booker-T 46, "Rapper" Ja Rule 35 and daughter Chelsea Clinton is 31.
