How to Overcome Evil With Good Instead of Being Overcome By Evil Romans 12:21 “Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good."

T

he other day there was an incident in my other world that caused a minor conflict with another person, because of HenRy nelson a misunderstanding. It made me think why do people do what they do? So that is how this message came to life this week. Some events in human history impact us so greatly, that we will forever remember the circumstance surrounding where we were when we heard the news. I will never forget sitting in a classroom while in the 9th grade and hearing the reports of JFK’s assassination over the school PA system and watching my teacher Mrs. Lovings cry. Nor will I ever forget that I watched on the TV seeing smoke billowing up from the North Tower of the World Trade Center and moments later see the second plane crash into the South Tower. Those images are forever embedded in our memories. You probably remember exactly where you were and what you were doing when you first heard the news. But today, I want to ask and

attempt to answer the question that no doubt has puzzled so many since that horrific day. How can we become better rather than bitter as result of the lessons of life? Scripture in Ephesians 6:12 commands us to not to be overcome by evil, but to overcome evil with good. You should know that our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realm. You have to overcome any tendencies to give in to discouragement, frustration or hurt. Take the offensive instead of just preceding along like robots who fail to utilize the power of God’s promise. Romans 12:21 says, "Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good." Amen! We have a choice in every situation to either be a victor or to be vanquished. Too many believers are failing to experience consistent victory over their anger, fear and self-centered responses to adversity. Jesus wants us to experience His life in all of its abundance, but too many Christians today are allowing themselves to be defeated by the world, the flesh and the devil. He, who overcomes with the good of patience, forbearance, kindness, and beneficence to those who have wronged you, is better than the mighty. Here are a few guidelines for overcoming evil with good instead of succumbing to power of evil that seeks to defeat us emotionally, mentally, physically, socially and spiritually. Instead of being over comers,

many Christians are merely succumbers in Christ and in the body of believers you belong to. You have to overshadow any opposition with His mighty power. To overshadow something is to let it appear much more prominent or important. Be like Mary who learned how to let the power of God overshadow any negative criticism, misunderstanding, or misconstruing of the facts when she was told, “Nothing is impossible with God.” Luke 1:35 says, “Then the angel said to Mary, The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you like a shining cloud and so the holy offspring will shall be born of you.” Amen! You have to overlook another’s fault even when you do not want to. To overlook is to fail to notice, to ignore, and to look beyond. Proverbs 19:11 says, “A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense.” Learn to be bigger than any problem through the power that Christ gives you. In a day when lawsuits and people are quick to demand their rights Paul tells us that you are not to take vengeance into your hands, but leave room for God’s wrath. You are to overcome with forgiveness that will break the cycle of retaliation and lead to reconciliation. The alternative is terrible because returning evil for evil hurts you just as much as it hurts an opponent. Forgiving another person frees you of the heavy load of bitterness that

defiles many. Choose to be better rather than bitter from every situation. Amen! You have to overflow with love, hope, joy and faith. The Greek word is hyperperisseuo, which means to abound more exceedingly. To overflow means to extend beyond the limits by going over the brim of vessel. David wrote, in Psalms 23:5-6, “My cup overflows.” People who allow the Spirit of God to empower them will have the spiritual resources that allow them to overflow with kindness, patience, and a harvest of righteousness.” Amen! You must overpower with Christ’s mighty power working in and through you. Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do everything God asks me to do with the help of Christ who gives me the strength and power.” Amen! Plug in to the power source of Christ’s word, His presence and His love so you will not give in to the temptation of responding out of your flesh instead of Christ’s power in you. He who began a good work in you is able to complete it. Do not doubt, fret or get sidetracked by unimportant problems that are like insects that can be warded off with Christ’s powerful repellants. God told Zerubbabel, “Not by power or by might, but by my Spirit says the Lord. Mountains will be removed.” Amen! Advice Column: Ask Karen Hollie Set the Example

W

hen we claim to follow Jesus, the world takes notice whether we like it or not. We may not feel we are witnessing, but for many people geRalDine we're the only DaviDson-HookeR view of Jesus they will ever see and the only words of Jesus they will ever hear. We may not realize it but the way we live cries out, "Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ." Do we want others to put into practice what they see in us? Would our example cause others to be drawn closer to God or to drift further away? Do we follow Jesus' command to love one another so that, "By this all men will know you are My disciples" (John 13:35)? This is a huge responsibility and one we must not assume is only for the "Super-Christian." A man had an "I Love Jesus" sticker on his car. One day, as he sped in and out of traffic, he realized his driving was not setting a good Christian example. He solved this "problem" by removing the sticker. Rather than modify an area of his life, the fellow removed his public identification with Jesus. We cannot remove the "I Love Jesus" stickers from our life. The world is watching and we must be bold enough to stand and accept the accountability. We need men and women of strength and character Brothers and Sisters who love one another and love the Lord with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength! Let's fall more in love with Jesus Christ and be among those who seek to live a life that brings Him glory and honor in ALL we do. Others are ready to follow. Let's show them the path to Christ as we set the example.

ne of the monstrous challenges that comfort us today is that we are slaves of things and no longer know how to be free in Christ. Notes From Union Hope

From the Mount

I

“Prepare for leadership” I Tim.4:616 was our church School lesson. Paul told Timothy in the previous verses that the Holy Spirit said that in the last times some would turn elD lloyD t. away from the MoRgan true faith and follow deceptive spirits and teaching of demons. Timothy’s charge was to combat this corrupt teaching in the church. This would require preparation on Timothy’s part; preparation implies intentionality, deliberateness, goals, and effort. He must not adopt a cavalier attitude in his Christian life. This is a very timely lesson because the church in many instances seems to have lost its desire for truth, what is wrong based on scripture is readily accepted in the church today. Members seem to seek out those

churches where anything goes, where the leader is more interested in lifting up himself than lifting up Jesus the only true head of the church. Paul tells Timothy “keep a close watch on how you live and on your teaching, stay true to what is right for the sake of your own salvation and the salvation of those who hear you.” It would behoove the preachers and teachers of today to remember this. Our morning message was delivered by pastor L.T.Morgan his subject was “He loved us enough to become a man” Heb. 2:16-18. There was a great chasm between God and mankind; as God the creator He did not have the benefit of the human experience. Although he made man and understood what mankind was like, he did not have the experience of disappointments, heart aches, hunger, tiredness, and the lost of a loved one, the whole human experience. So in order to understand us and feel what we feel, to be able to sympathies with us and intercede for us; God loved us so that he became a man. Be Blessed

y now, you all have probably heard about or actually heard the taping of the phone call made by, then Mayor Pro-Tem Dwaine Caraway, to the police the night of January 2nd of this year. Here are excerpts from the audio taping: Caraway said his wife got upset after he complained about her throwing away his kitchen aprons. He told Deputy Craig Miller the argument grew heated and “so to separate myself from her, I stayed down in the game room away from her, holding the door so she couldn’t come to the door. So, of course, she’s kicking the door. She’s doing everything under the sun.” “Barbara has a chemical imbalance, I think. I hate to say this. But I think that this is probably what it is. She sometimes can get in a fit of rage. It’s not about infidelity; it’s not about me hitting her. She’s the smartest person in the world and when she gets set off, everybody just get out of the way. And she just went and took it too far tonight.” Caraway told Miller his wife was sticking a knife in the cracks of the game-room door. “I don’t think Barbara has intentions of hurting me, but in the midst of a fit of rage, you never know what might happen.

www.dfwelitenews.com

So the best thing for me to do, so I wouldn’t put bruises and hurt her, was not being afraid, was for me to try and to do what I needed to do to try and keep the situation under control as best I could under the circumstances.” Because I could have walked out of there. Now, if I had walked out of there, I’d have walked out there with a chair and I would have been swinging and protecting myself, period. OK? But I did not want it to escalate to that level.” When Officer Miller asked Mr. Caraway how he finally got out of there, he said, “I talked to her…I was in there about 25 minutes holding the door. And then my stupid (expletive) put a chair up to the door and, and I’m standing there right by the chair. And she kicked that (expletive) door and that chair hurt my (expletive) leg. I thought my leg was broken. So, I said, that’s a bad move.” The tape revealed that Mrs. Caraway later slid Mayor Caraway the keys under the door and he left out the back door. Mr. Caraway refused to press charges. Stating that there has never been a history of violence, and he hopes that her family will convince her to get counseling. So, what do you think? BaRBeRshOp Talk wiTh leON simON

I

n the last month or so I’ve heard and seen a couple of things that are truly disturbing. Disturbing in that it really hurts our children. One is leon siMon that fact that they will do studies on “BULLYING”. The second, at the NFL combine it was revealed that some athletes work hard during the week, lifting weights, running, doing anything they can to make their bodies look intimidating so they might not have to “COMPETE” or they scare their opponents. Bullying is as old as prostitution and gambling. Goliath was a Bully, and we all know how that turned out. Every school I attended and every time I changed grades there was a new Bully, someone to try to intimidate you. Believe it or not the first day I attended Southern Bible Institute, one of my fellow students, a preacher by the way, tried to intimidate me. Bullies and Bullying always works itself out. You fight them; let them know you’re not afraid to fight them. You get your brother, or homey and fight them but it always works itself out. Some guys are bullies for protection they themselves are afraid of. We over protect our kids. Until I reached High School all sports played in my neighborhood were pick up games, nothing organized. We were our own referees, police, judge and jury. That taught us life skills, problem solving, diplomacy, etc. Everything now is organized. Referees

coaches, etc. there is no rhythm, no soul everything is choreographed. That leads to the next problem “COMPETITION” our kids don’t like to compete they want the deck stacked. (LeBron, Wade, and Chris). We walked miles to other neighborhoods if they thought they could beat us in Baseball, Basketball and Football. I went to the TSU relays this week. I noticed that various athletes and coaches try not to compete against the top athletes. On relays they won’t run their top boys so they can have an excuse. Then when they get in pressure situations they can’t respond. A few years back at the Texas Relays, Carl Lewis passed the Olympic Champion Donovan Bailey. Bailey not wanting to get beat, grabbed his hamstring. In an interview later he said his calf muscle tighten up. That wasn’t what he grabbed during the race. Had he continued his team would have been second. He didn’t care. Later that same year Dallas’ own Michael Johnson agreed to run Donovan in a match race 150 yards. Michael couldn’t beat Donovan out of the curve, he grabbed his hamstring. They came to get Mike with a special wheelchair with one leg stuck out. Wouldn’t you know it, it was the same leg he grabbed! What a coincidence; or what a plan! Nate Newton said The Cowboys need competition at each position to bring this team back. Excellent idea but it won’t work, guys won’t compete if the job isn’t handed to them they will ask to be traded. That’s not just Cowboys, that’s the Rangers, the Mavericks, the Lakers and the Yankees. Leave the Bully along he’ll get handled. We need our kids to COMPETE again.

paRade fOR sTaTe champs kimBall kNighTs slaTed fOR saTuRday By: lola seaRCy The Kimball Knights Boys Basketball team will celebrate winning the State 4A Boys Basketball championship with a parade Saturday, March 26th. The parade will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. Coach Royce Johnson and the Kimball Knights defeated LaMarque earlier this month in route to winning their 4th State Championship. You can say that Coach Royce Johnson is no stranger to championships. His father, now the Assistant Athletic Director at DISD, Mr. Goree Johnson led the Kimball Knights to championship gold in 1996 and 1997; coaching high school standout Jason Sasser; who went on to play collegiate ball at Texas Tech and played the 1996-1997 season with the Dallas Mavericks. And Coach Johnson can certainly share the experience of winning a basketball championship with his players, having played on the 1990 state championship team under the late Billy Tubbs. Since taking over the reigns in 1999, Coach Royce “Snoops” Johnson has continued to grow the school’s basketball program; and that’s why this win is so special to Coach Johnson and the Kimball Knights team. The parade will be staged at the Fiesta Store parking lot on the corner of Ledbetter and Hampton, and proceed west down Ledbetter; turn North

(right) onto Westmoreland on to the Kimball High School parking lot. Once the parade participants arrive on the school parking lot, the rally will began! The 4A Basketball State Champions will benefit from the Champion Auto Scholarship Fund that will contribute to the Kimball Knights Basketball Booster Club.Champion Auto will conduct a raffle following the

The first 100 ticket purchases will receive a complimentary championship t-shirt. The raffle ticket can be purchased at Kimball High or Champion Auto 3740 W. Ledbetter Dr. Dallas, TX 75233. Winner need not be present to win. Invited guests to the rally include, State Senator Royce West, Dallas Mayor Dwaine Caraway, and Dallas Mayoral candidate Ron Natinsky, just to name a few.

CaRaway taPe: MuCH to Do aBout notHing... ContinueD FRoM Page 7 much to do about nothing, and apparently, so do most of the voters in Dallas. Here are a few comments readers made regarding the incident between Mayor Caraway and his wife: “He shouldn’t have done anything at all,” said Davis, 29, who lives in Uptown Dallas, and works in marketing. “It’s his personal life. Who cares?” Willie Allen said he doesn’t fault Caraway’s handling of the matter. “That’s his personal business,” Allen said. “And I think people should stay out of his personal business.” When asked if Caraway’s political position made a difference. Allen said, “A man’s a man. He was on his personal property…people take things all out of proportion.” “In spite of his difficulties, he stayed within the law because he could have easily protected himself, but he protected his

wife. In spite of the rage of his wife, he was a man,” said Jerry Bob Chambers. Some feel like Caraway should expect things like this to happen when he involves the “system” in his personal business. I think this is all a ploy by those who would try to discredit Mayor Caraway. And, I agree that it is his personal business. I would like to ask our readers another question. What would you prefer he do? Not call the police and allow the situation to escalate into something much bigger? If Mayor Caraway had not called the police and the situation turned to violence, then we would have said he should have called the police. I just wonder if we would be making such a big deal out of the situation if the incident were between one of our political leaders of a “lighter” hue. Really, much to do about nothing!

little known BlaCk HistoRy By: Bettye williaMs “katt” Part 1: One of the most significant achievements of blacks in the state was their participation in the Texas Centennial of 1936. This event was important because it allowed African Americans to highlight the contributions that they had made to the state's and the nation's development. Through the efforts of A. Maceo Smith of the Dallas Negro Chamber of Commerce and Samuel W. Houston of Huntsville, the Hall of Negro Life was built at Fair Park in Dallas to bring to the state the works of Harlem Renaissance painter Aaron Douglass as well as to exhibit the paintings of Texas artists Samuel A. Countee of Houston and Frank Sheinall of Galveston. More importantly, the Negro Day event held in Dallas as the black celebration of the Texas Centennial proved to be an important opportunity for black Texans to meet and plan strategy to end the segregation and discrimination that they faced.

Mrs. Smith Takes on Digital Television By esteR Davis

S

ome people say that communicators are born, not taught nor educated. Upon arrival on planet earth they are natural crowd pleasers with a loyal audience and a joy to be around. Linda Olden Smith is a woman on a digSecital mission. uring a television linDa sMitH station. Welcome Linda Olden Smith to the national stage. A sheer natural in every way. Instantly you notice the contagious smile and flamboyace confidence. Mrs. Smith is a native of Detroit Michigan, attended Henry Ford High School. She graduated from the same school that Diana Ross graduated from Cass Tech. The path to college was set by her grandmother who was a member of the original Jubilee Singers. This was the historic group who traveled raising money for Fisk University. So, Ms. Smith is off to Fisk University. By 1976, Mrs. Smith was a student at Texas Southern University and officially working in the field designed for her personality. At KCOH and KYOK Radio, she dabbled in news, voice overs and came familiar with all the waves of radio. About this time, the world of mediation was taking on a life of its own. And, of course, Mrs. Smith designed a successful mediation approach that lead her from Houston to Atlanta to Dallas, and top recognition of mediating disputes . . . ‘with the thought resolution protocol’ from the Dallas Bar Association. Really??? Yes, indeed!!

march 25, 2011

So, you can plainly see that all roads continue to lead to communicating and making a difference. Major clients such as United States Postal Service Redress Program, Texas Youth of Department Texas Commission, Transportation and EEOC are but a few of the clients that have extended their mental grasp, adhered to the new approach all for the exclusive purpose of assisting parties to achieve the ultimate resolution potential. You may ask yourself, what then lead to a television station? Radio is always a reason to transition to the next level. And opportunity is always knocking. Mrs. Smith created a radio talk show “On-The-Job”, surrounding hundreds of mediations and the more than 450 people she trained as mediators. Enough reasons to visually conduct business, focus locally and keep traditional values. Afterall, 80% if what we do is still visual. Her book entitled “Playing the Resolution Card” was published in 2008. The book is thought provoking and gets to the “nitty-gritty” of what it takes to make mediation an invaluable tool in recognizing and resolving conflict. If peace is one of your passions, it is a practical book of harmony for discussions in your home, the workplace, the jogging trail and I cannot leave out your local watering hole. Finally, we have a host of talented communicators out there. But if we are to change the course of image, headlines, negative reporting, etc., etc., we cannot do it on somebody’s else ‘dime’. You have to “bite the bullet” and simply own your own media. In advance, thanks Linda Olden Smith. As usual, I am out of time, but you can log on or more expressly send Linda Olden Smith an encouraging email at: trucemedia@aol.com . . . Ester Davis is a celebrated television host/producer.
