How ‘Bout Them MAVS! By Lola Searcy

nless you have been living on the planet Mars, or hiding under a rock, you know that the Dallas Mavericks swEPt the los angeles lakers in round 2 of the NBa western Conference semi finals! that’s right! the Dallas Mavericks brought out the brooms sunday afternoon against the 2-time defending NBa Champion los angeles lakers! after watching the MaVs struggle with the Portland trailblazers in the first round of the western Conference, it looked like the MaVs were reverting back to that ole “one and done” syndrome. You, know for the past five years, the MaVs would make it to the playoffs, and exit almost as soon as they entered the first round. MaV fans (i know this fan was) were starting to think the
Page 12
MaVs were cursed. it looked like they were never going to advance past the first round ever again! But, never say never! the MaVs play with guts and sheer determination during both series. when it looked like they would take an early exit during the series with the Portland, they found a way to come back. they never gave up and they never quit! and for the first time since the MaVs were robbed of the title against the Miami Heat in 2006; we are proud to be a MaVs fan! and you have to admit, that because the MaVs had such a hard time with Portland, (nobody thought they would beat them), i pretty much wrote them off against the great Kobe Bryant and the los angeles lakers, and with good reason. i went to sleep on them in the first game against the lakers at the

MOTHERS WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE JOHN 19:16-25
T
his week we will look at three different moms. the protective mom, the instructive mom and the loyal mom. You know you are a Henry Nelson Mom when your feet stick to the kitchen floor and you do not care. when the kids are fighting, you threaten to lock them in a room together and not let them out until someone’s bleeding. You cannot find your cell phone, so you ask a friend to call you, and you run around the house madly, following the sound until you locate the phone downstairs in the laundry basket. Your idea of a good day is making it through without a child leaking bodily fluids on you. Your baby’s pacifier falls on the floor and you give it back to her, after you suck the dirt off of it because you are too busy to wash it off. Your kids make jokes about farting, burping, pooping, etc. and you think it’s funny. You are so desperate for adult conversation that
you spill your guts to the telemarketer that calls and HE hangs up on you! spit is your number one cleaning agent. You automatically double-knot everything you tie. You spend a half hour searching for your sunglasses only to have your teenager say, “Mom, why don’t you wear the ones you pushed up on your head?” You are out for a nice romantic meal with your husband, enjoying some real adult conversation, when suddenly you realize that you have reached over and started to cut up his steak! last sunday was Mother’s Day and it is a day to honor those women in your lives who have made an eternal difference. Maybe it was the woman who gave birth to you, but it also may be an aunt, a sister, or another dear woman who has changed your life for the better. Eve was the mother of all living people who have been and who will be. Her name, “Eve,” means “living.” she was the first mother and the first woman to ever give birth to a child. i wonder if she knew what to expect when it came time for Cain to be born? i wonder if she was afraid of motherhood no one had ever done it before?! i wonder if she knew what an important and influential job being
a mother is. i wonder if laundry day or adam’s forgetfulness of their anniversary or other issues bothered her? Eve had three sons mentioned by name in scripture: Cain, abel and seth. Genesis 5:4 tells us that they had many sons and daughters in their life together, but we focus on these three boys. Cain murdered abel. Eve is not only the first mother, but also the first mother to lose a child in death. really, adam and Eve lost two sons because the other left and wandered the lands. it was through the line of seth that people began to “call upon the name of the lord.” since the time of Eve, it has fallen to mothers to raise their children for the lord. Our mothers bring us into the world. they nurture us. they provide for us. they raised us up. they teach us. they discipline us. Mother’s have a remarkable ability to change the world through their children. there are other mothers in the Bible that teach us about the influence that mothers have on all of us. the protective mother: Jochebed in Exodus 2:1-4the scripture says, “Now a man of the house of levi married a levite woman, and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. when she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months. But
“Taste Test” Wake Up! Hawaiian Lemonade for Kids
when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. His sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him. amen! Moses’ mother, who we find out later is named Jochebed, took great risks to protect her son. Unfortunately, this woman was a slave among a very brutal people. the plan set in place in Exodus 1 was to control the Hebrew people though controlling the male population. the Hebrew people would soon be a stagnate race and Egypt would have total absolute control over them. the problem for the Pharaoh (Exodus 1: 17-22) is that the midwives did not obey his command and allowed boys to live and the nation of israel grew strong in spirit and in number which was the fear of Egypt. Egyptian cruelty did not end, but only continued. Moses mother put him in a basket to protect him. she could no longer hide him and feared that death would come to her son. she placed him in the Nile and trusted God. His sister watched him from a distance and saw his rescue. she even offered “a woman” to be the nurse for the baby and Moses’ own mother became his nanny. amen!

MAvS cover story, continued from front page staples Center. the last time i will begin on sunday or tuesday, checked the lakers were ahead by May 17th time to be determined! 16, and i naturally assumed that Here’s what i think about the the MaVs were done, because MaVs and the NBa Championthey were playing the 2-time ship! i think that since the MaVs defending NBa Champion, los have beaten the 2-time world angeles lakers. But, i was very Champion los angeles lakers, pleasantly surprised when i woke they are a shoe in to win the NBa up to the news that the MaVs had Championship! Now, it will not be stunned the sports world by upseta walk in park. the MaVs will ting the lakers! and imagine my have to continue to play DEfENsE surprise when i found out that the and they will have to continue to be “Great Kobe Bryant” missed a shot aggressive on the OffENsiVE that could have beaten the MaVs! American Airlines Center is packed with Dallas Mavericks Fans end. in my opinion, if they do that, after game one, Kobe Bryant as they cheer on the Mavericks against Lakers. they can beat the MiaMi HEat said, “i’m highly concerned. this just like they did the lakers and team can beat us. it’s clear. we just have You’ve got to give Coach rick Carlisle that way, the referees can’t steal or take and his coaching staff credit for a game this one from them like they did in 2006! to come in ready to play in Game 2.” well, obviously, they never came ready plan that Phil Jackson, Kobe Bryant and to play the Mavericks in game 2, 3 or 4! the lakers never figured out. HOW ‘BOUT THEM MAvS!!! the MaVs totally dismantled the lakers in each of the four games! the MaVs did it with defense, which almost always wins championships! the MaVs defense was the key. During the series the MaVs were able to hold the lakers’ to 42.3 percent shooting and the lakers averaged only 88 points per game. But, you gotta give the MaVs’ offense credit. they were virtually unstoppable during the entire series! J.J. Barea put up 22 points in game 4 and he literally shoved the basketball down the throat of andrew Bynum, which is why Bynum threw an elbow to Barea’s ribs with less than nine minutes to go in game 4. the MaVs bench combined for a whopping 86 points. Barea finished the day with 22 points and the way Jason terry was hitting the 3-pointers, you would have thought it was flooding in the aaC. terry hit 9 out 10 3-pointers, to finish with 32 points and 4 assist; Peja stojakovic finished with 21 points, Brendan Haywood had 4, Brian Cardinal had 3 points, while Corey Brewer and ian Mahinmi chipped in 2 points! Next for the MaVs is the winner of the Dallas Maverick Jason Kidd drives to the hoop Dallas Mavericks' Jason Terry shoots a 3-pointer Oklahoma City – Memphis series, which despite Lakers efforts! against Los Angeles Lakers' Steve Blake.

ost people and some Christians have asked this Gene Turner question, but what some people do not understand is the fact that God did not come from anywhere. God has always been God; there is no beginning and no ending with God. Catch twenty-two is that human minds cannot and is not capable of understanding the statement of where God came from, and how old is God? Mankind minds cannot even get close to understanding such a statement. Man’s mind would run off of the pages of time, and would still not understand such a statement. You see, not being a believer, man can not understand this because the first thing he will do is try to figure out how God got here, and that is where his mind becomes gun powder with a lighted match in the middle. How can a person living in a time zone understand eternity past? He/she can not because that is as far as his/her mind can travel, and who brought time into the world. Now, if someone (GOD) can bring time into existence when there was no such thing, how can you question anything pertaining to where anything or anyone came from? a true Christian does not try to figure out anything about the power of God, we just accept and believe God no matter what the question may be.
so, these babies were created in eternity past in the epoxy mind of the almighty God. i guess we do know creation and formation is two different words and they have different meanings? Creation means when one perceives something to become, and formation is bringing the creation into the form of reality, because you can see it, touch it, and use it, because it has become a part of a materialistic or realistic event. a lot of people get lost in Genesis (1:1) in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. some people think God became God and immediately created the heaven and the earth. Our minds cannot perceive any notion concerning the beginning of God; first of all we cannot understand the full meaning of eternity past. Can you picture just one ant hill, or one ant colony, just how many ants do you think have come and gone since the beginning of time, and the ones to come? Did you know that God had a name for every ant that has gone on to his death, and has a name for the ones to come, because He did this in eternity past? this alone is enough to blow your mind. if that’s not enough for you, He knows every grain of sand all over the world. How long would it take us to count every grain of sand in just a thimble? i hope this article have wet your appetite to study this topic further, but to prove my first point look at JErEMiaH (1:45-). Before i formed thee in the belly i knew thee. we serve an awesome God. God is so powerful that we cannot describe His power, so when we have run out of everything to describe His power, all we can come up with after that is the word awEsOME. God simply does not have a beginning nor does He have and ending. we as Christians better be glad God has no ending, because if He did would mean that we would have one also. Having no end should make all Christians shout with joy, because that means everlasting to everlasting for us.
the true Christian believes that in eternity past God created the world and all forms of life and all numbers. God created all people who are dead, who are living right now, and let us not forget to read our Bibles. May all who are going to be born in the future, and gave all who he created a name that only He ( God bless you real good and may He ever ovem beyou r 1in9His , 2loving 010 care. keep God ) knows. some people think thatNGod creates so many babies every year. this is not

Advice Column: Ask Karen Hollie Power Outage
I
’m a creature of habit. i love light. i walk into a room, and i instinctively flip the light switch on even when we’re in the middle of days with a power outage in my neighGeraldine Davidson-Hooker borhood recently. so here i am, absent-mindedly flipping light switches and finding the room as dark as before. those switches made it look like there was light, except suddenly they weren’t connected to the power. there are people like that spiritually. Oh, they’ve got all the appearances of being “on” spiritually except they’re not connected to the power that comes only from a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Church can’t give that to you; Christianity can’t give that to you; having Jesus all around you won’t give you His power for living. the power has to come from Jesus in you. the Bible talks about people who have “a form of godliness” but are lacking “its power” (2 timothy 3:5). Deep in your heart, you can probably tell if the power of Jesus is there or not. You can have it all on the outside, like a good light switch, and still lack the power of Christ in your tough times, your lonely times. Your dark side is just about as dark as ever because only Jesus on the inside can change the sin you’ve never been able to change. this is why God gives this sobering challenge to church folks in the Bible: “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ is in you, unless, of course, you fail the test” (2 Corinthians 13:5). You may be one invitation away from Jesus the belief, Jesus the religion, and making Him Jesus your personal savior.

ur Church school lesson was “Heavenly wo r s h i p ” rev.4:1-2, 6b-11. John saw a door opened in heaven and voice like a trumpet blast saying “come up here, and i will show you what
must happen after this.” when he looked he saw a throne and someone sitting upon it. John does not try to describe the person of God he could only describe what he was like. But he saw worship service going on in heaven around this throne. there were four living creatures that surrounded the throne of God. the living creatures show us that all of nature owes its worship to God, both animals and man. the morning message was delivered by Pastor lloyd Morgan from the subject “the man who had two mothers” Exodus 2:1-10. Moses
became the kind of man he was because of the type of mothers he had. and they were both good mothers because they both had some of the same instincts for their roles. Moses’ birth mother Jochebed saved his life by placing him in a basket and letting him flow down the Nile, Pharaohs daughter saved him from the water named him Moses and made him her son. acts 7:22 tells us that “Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in speech and action.” Pharaoh’s daughter wanted Moses to have all the advantages her culture could supply. she wanted him to be more than a common laborer. and she succeeded in building him into a man who was powerful in speech and action. there was something Pharaoh’s daughter had not supplied him with. something was missing from his extensive education in the universities of Egypt. what was missing was knowledge of who God was. His birth Mother Jochebed gave him this. we pray that each mother will do the same. Be Blessed

Prayer Closet There are times in our life when we are overwhelmed by people or circumstances, therefore causing us to forget the truth that God is on our side. we have to remember that no matter what the circumPastor Clarence stances are, God Henderson promised to protect us. Paul says it well in romans 8:31 “if God is for us, who can be against us”? and we know the answer. No one can be against us if God is for us. that is the theme of Psalms 124. “if it had not been for the lord who was on our side, when men rose up against us, then they would have swallowed us alive, when their wrath was kindled against us”. Don’t let any of these things drown you. Don’t let the devil deceive you. if God is for you, who can be against you?

BaRBeRshOp Talk wiTh leON simON a couple of weeks ago in an article about the Mavericks, i said at the time every team in the NBa wanted the Mavericks in the first Leon Simon round. they had teams losing games to get a shot at the MaVs. the Mavericks won the first series from the trailblazers a team most people thought would beat them. there were a ton of people questioning whether the Mavericks belong in the same gym as the lakers. i even heard some talk as late as yesterday about the Black Mamba (Kobe Bryant) and how they were going to probably make NBa history coming from 3 games down to beat an inept Mavericks team. at the time all of these predictions were being made the Mavericks were leading the series 3-0. sunday, after the Mavericks put an old fashion whipping on the lakers, they’ve had everyone from ex-players to future players analyzing the lakers. they said the lakers have problems internally; they have trust issues; they’re getting too old; they’re just not athletic enough; there is no more intensity; are just a few of the diagnosis i’ve heard. i have yet to hear an intelligent comment like, “the Dallas Mavericks were the problem.” Going into this series their records were almost identical. Have you ever seen anyone wake a knocked out fighter up and as him, “what happened?” He missed it he was unconscious. the lakers don’t know they slept through it, and that’s the irony of it all! the lakers scored 86 points – the Mavericks bench scored 86 points. the Mavericks had more assist than the lakers had made baskets. the Mavericks won game one by 2 points, game 2 by 12, both in la; game 3 by 6, and game 4 by 36! that’s the won all the prognosticators thought for sure Kobe and his boys were sure to win. we’ve done some dumb things in our era. i for one don’t want my grandson to read numbers like those when he grows up and says, “Pa Pa. you guys were stupid not to see the Mavericks were the better team”! i’ve heard Pau Gasol’s woman left him. Mike tyson made a better showing than that after his wife left him. with a payroll the size of the lakers and the Mavericks bench equal the starters scores, some bodies over matched. the good thing about this is maybe now i can go to church and not see some idiot with the entire lakers uniform on! i go to a funeral some clown’s got Kobe’s uniform on! for the benefit of you analyst that can’t read the tea leaves and see that the lakers hit an iceberg and they’ve gone down, and the name of the iceberg is MaVEriCK! while in school, it was brought to our attention that if plain sense makes sense don’t try to make other sense out of it. that was a beat down folks! after all the humiliation the Mavericks suffered at the hands of some great lakers teams, this wasn’t one of them !!!!

thought he did an admirable job,” said Prairie View a&M head coach Heish Northern. “He was a leader on the team in terms of academics, voicing his opinion and getting people lined up correctly. that was a great accomplishment for a player who walked on and earned a scholarship.” a Biology major with a 3.3 grade point average, sencherey is also an example of someone who puts the team ahead of himself as he delayed his graduation to come back and play the 2010 season. “it shows what kind of character he has for him to put off medical school for football,” said Northern. “He sacrificed for the team instead of putting his needs and wants ahead. i know Max will be successful because he will put forth the time and effort.”

elcome to the weekend, Baaaby! How about those Mav’s! it was soooo cool to be at the aa Center as they ran those l.a lakers right outta texas! at press time the w e s t e r n Conference finals begin either sunKevan Browning day or tuesday in Dallas at the american airlines Center. Memphis Grizzlies or Oklahoma City thunder, this could be the year for Dirk and the fellas! looking ahead, there could be a Mavs vs. Miami Heat NBa final’s rematch...the last time we met Mr. wade, it ended badly for the Mavs...Note to fans...last sunday, we had it sounding like the reunion rowdies were at the aa Center, wE need to keep that up! Best new reality show??? in thursday’s episode of Lil Romeo “lisa raye: the real McCoy,” the actress seeks spiritual guidance from Bishop t.D. Jakes. she meets with her spiritual advisor luther McKinstry who encourages her to attend the Bishop’s “woman thou art loosed” conference in Dallas. But before she leaves town, she sits with her divorce attorney to discuss unresolved financial issues from her divorce. while being encouraged to just move on, lisa raye can’t seem to shake the past, especially since she received not a dime from the settlement. at the wtal conference, lisa raye has an eyebrow-raising “girlfriend” chat with first lady serita Jakes and other female parishioners about intimacy and sexuality. Next, lisa raye is inspired by Bishop Jakes’ rousing sermon, but envies other attendees who are moved by the Holy spirit. Her break thru moment with the Bishop is worth viewing alone...Peep this guilty pleasure thursday nights at 8P on tV ONE! Did lamar Odom’s reality show with his wife Khole Kardshian affect his game for the lakers this year???? who cares!!! Gooooo Mavs! well Odom a flagrant fouler, now has this to deal with: Everyone who has an ex is liable to get their business pushed in the
www.dfwelitenews.com-
street with a hot book deal, even lamar Odom. the laker’s ex-girlfriend, liza Morales, who has two kids with the baller, is ready to share with the world about the drama of their relationship and the journey of being in love with a professional athlete. she promises it’ll be juuuuu-cee!!!! Hats LisaRaye McCoy off to lil romeo and it’s a good thing romeo had a good weekend at the box office with “Jumping the Broom,” because it’s all over for him on “Dancing with the stars.” Yep, we’re sorry to have to break the news to if you haven’t heard, but he was dismissed tuesday night from the hit aBC dance contest show. in his farewell comments, romeo made quite a confession of sorts. He admitted that “Dwts” changed his life. Before becoming a contestant, he said he was terrified of dancing and didn’t even dance at his prom. lil romeo, by the way is said to be worth a cool 60 Million plus, Na na-na na! My partner Blood Hound Benny is reporting that whitney Houston was actually banned from a series of Prince concerts before being admitted to rehab around 10 days ago. the 47-year-old singer – who has a history of substance abuse issues – was reportedly told not to attend anymore of the Purple One’s shows after she appeared “intoxicated” at every concert she went to in the run-up to her entering a treatment facility to seek help for her addictions. Organizers eventually grew tired with whitney’s demands after she pestered them for free tickets and then demanded to be let up on stage. an insider told the website: “they didn’t want her to embarrass herself.” Blessings and respect to Bob Marley!!! for loyal fans of the third world’s first pop superstar, who died from cancer at the age of 36 on May 11 1981, this year’s milestone anniversary is not about grieving but about celebrating. Google the Jamaica Observer or Jamaica Gleaner for inside scoop. finally thor, jumping the Brppm and fast 5 are all worthy of going to a theater and leaving the bootleg man behind...at least for the weekend, lol!!! Happy Birthday to YOU and Celebs this week!!!! stevie wonder is 61, Ving rhames is 51, Dennis rodman is 50 and Kim “tootie“ fields is 42! thanks for rollin with a Brotha in the Elite News and online at www.dfwelitenews.com
