Surprising leadership principles from the Bible Proverbs 29:21-22 “An angry man stirs up dissension and a hottempered one commits many sin”

T

his week I decided to embark on a Bible study. I purposefully traveled through the whole of Scripture henry Nelson looking for one fresh leadership principle in every book, and I would record them as I went. Some of them were fairly straightforward, but some of them surprised me as contrary to common leadership thought. But even if they sounded odd at first, the biblical principles stood the test of application in my own life. Once again, God’s logic trumps human logic. At the end of the study, God indeed rewarded me with a treasure trove of concepts for leaders fighting the lions of criticism, anger, peopleproblems, negativity, pride, and many other issues. Here are my top six discoveries that have made the biggest difference in my daily work.

Build the reputation of your critics During the 1997 Us federal election, a national news columnist found a particularly scathing way to criticize a republican Party

leader who was “a preacher, not a politician.” He said, “the implication was obvious.“ Preachers are by nature intolerant, impatient, and arrogant. Preachers are “know-it-alls,” dangerous to the citizenry of an enlightened and pluralized public.Judges 8:3 says, “what was i able to do compared to you?’ amen! when he said this, their anger against him subsided” amen! i was shocked when i found out a colleague had criticized my abilities behind the scenes. i approached him after struggling to distance myself from my initial emotions. Coincidentally, i had just studied the story of Gideon’s response to his own critics, and i decided to try out his technique. in the book of Judges, Gideon is the weakest member of the weakest clan in his Hebrew tribe, but he is nevertheless chosen by God to save the entire nation of israel. Gideon marshals 300 troops to chase the enemy Midianite army, calling on surrounding tribes to assist. after a small victory of their own, some of the tribal chiefs complain about missing the glory of Gideon’s main battle. the text says they criticize him “violently. Judges 8:1–3 says,” But rather than respond in kind, he says, “what have i done now compared to you? God handed over to you Oreb and Zeeb, the two princes of Midian. what was i able to do compared to you?” amen!

they want credit for a victory any victory. and they will complain until they get it. when Gideon lifts up their accomplishments over his own, their jealousy and anger subside. further criticism is silenced. when i tried this with my colleague, we reconciled and he agreed to avoid negative comments in the future. Gideon’s technique of promoting his critics without diminishing his own accomplishments can be applied in two ways: identify their strengths. when you point out the strengths of a critic in meetings and oneon-one discussions with coworkers, it gets around that you think a lot of him, and he may feel a twinge of guilt when he criticizes you in the future. ask for confidential criticism. those who sling mud at me in public usually change their tune in private discussions. i have found a powerful question when i am behind closed doors: “is there anything i can do to improve?” sometimes this yields a pointer i can actually benefit from, but it also takes wind away from the person’s public bashing. Private comments are easier for me to take, because i am prepared for them, and they lack the emotion fueled by an audience. Preventing a public confrontation saves embarrassment and defensiveness for everyone. a Xerox’s CEO named anne Mulcahy said, “stay approachable. surround yourself

they’re ready. the meat should be tender but not falling off the bone. remove the ribs from the grill and transfer to a large rimmed baking sheet lined with foil. increase the temperature of the indirect grill fire to 350°f. in a medium bowl, mix the kecap manis, root beer, and both chili sauces. set aside 1/2 cup of the sauce for serving. Brush the ribs on all sides with the remaining sauce. return the ribs to the cool zone of the grill and cook, turning once, until nicely lacquered, about 15 minutes total. let the ribs rest, tented with foil, for about 10 minutes before cutting and serving with the reserved sauce for dipping or for drizzling over the ribs.

with a group of good critics. it is the biggest gift you can get.” Constant criticism can devastate corporate culture. when left unchecked, they define the culture. a culture of humility, however, is defined by Gideon’s uncommon tactic of lifting up his critics. Do not argue ever Proverbs 29:22 says, “an angry man stirs up dissension, and a hot-tempered one commits many sins.” amen! the Bible teaches we should debate without quarreling. Debate and argumentation are opposites, though they both rely on conflict. the former assumes we have the same objective, the latter assumes we’re out to dominate the other. when i argue with you, i want only what i want; when we debate, you and i want the same thing. the skilled leader knows how to turn back an argument to a debate, and to prevent a debate from becoming an argument. He also knows how to handle the slippery reptile called conflict. why do so many leaders rely on harsh argumentation? Proverbs reveals the folly of dominating others with words, of establishing authority with anger. the following principles should govern our meetings, relationships, and discussions indeed, all human interaction.

MAYOR, continued from front page nity, you did not immediately recognize his name before he entered the Mayor’s race and his “we like Mike” signs popped up all over the city. But, perhaps name recognition and money is not all it takes to win the Mayor’s race. former Council member and Economic committee chair, ron Natinsky, may very well be the person holding the keys to the Mayor’s office for both Kunkle and rawlings. Natinsky finished in third place with 17,428 votes; not enough to win, but definitely enough to put Kunkle or rawlings over the top in the runoff election, depending on who he decides to endorse for Mayor. rawlings’ message centered on his promise to bring a business approach and his chief executive contacts to City Hall. Over time, it evolved to include focusing on developing

the city’s southern sector and inspiring philanthropy in the city’s troubled schools. rawlings said he was pleased with the outcome and was looking forward to what’s ahead. “we have a lot of work to do yet. we’re just going to keep working hard,” he said. “it’s not about me, it’s about the message, and people love growth.” a partner in a successful Uptown private equity firm, rawlings enjoyed the broad endorsement of the city’s business community, many of its wealthiest residents and a wide range of southern Dallas political and religious figures. Kunkle, meanwhile, embraced a message that put neighborhoods and their troubles at the forefront. He repeatedly told residents that he wanted to see City Hall devote itself to more competent execution of basic services like fixing roads, keeping libraries and

recreation centers open and generally being more responsive to the public. i really believe the key to the future of this city and our economic growth is dependent on the strength of our neighborhoods,” he said. Kunkle’s tenure as police chief was a clear advantage in the race. four years ago, the city’s crime rate was the key issue among mayoral candidates. this year the crime rate was hardly an issue, and Kunkle is credited with making the difference. will former Mayoral candidate ron Natinsky endorse Mike rawlings who has more than thirty years of business experience, or will he choose to endorse former Police Chief David Kunkle, who pledges to put basic services at the top of his list. whomever Natinsky endorses, will most assuredly have a big advantage on June 18.

chRisTiaN mOmeNTs A wise person is hungry for knowledge, while the fool feeds on trash. Proverbs 15:14

Dr. William M. Campbell

It is said that you are what you eat. If that is true, then what do you have an appetite for?

nd God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called He seas; and God saw gene Turner that it was good. and God said let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so. and the earth brought forth grass, whose seed was in itself, after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.this week we want to talk about the “GraCE” of God. a lot of people get grace mixed up with mercy, but they acts opposite of each other. “Grace is something that God gives you that you do not deserve”. “ Mercy is something that you really deserve, but God’s mercy does not let it happen to you, that’s mercy. i want to write about this passage of scripture, because the expression of creation is born in the same context of the Black Church today. and God called the dry land earth: and the gathering together of the waters He called seas: and we know the rest of the passage. it is in that perpetuation notion that this text talks about that which is related to the theological concept of grace. we see in the morning of creation we see the very beginning of the embryology of Grace. we know about it in Jesus. But in the morning of creation we see it. Just as perpetuation is put in the tomato tomato to make it have the capacity to continue and it has nothing to do with it, Grace is given to us and we have nothing to do with it. God has given to each of us grace. we who follows Christ are freely given grace. what is Grace? One theologian says grace is God’s unmerited favors towards us in that while were still sinners, Christ died for us. Grace is God’s goodness inspite of our badness. Grace is God putting up with us when we don’t deserve it. Grace is God going the second mile not on the basis of our conduct, but the basis of God’s love for us. Grace has

www.dfwelitenews.com

nothing to do with you and me. Grace has nothing to do with our conduct. it is a gift of our human contract with God, and it’s available to each of us, not some of us. Not the younger ones or the older ones. Not the Black or the white, but everyone. Grace is part of the gift of our human contract. in other words, Grace is that which makes possible our salvation. you and i can be saved. we have available to us eternal life not because we are so good and not because we do right, or the right things. Grace is getting up in the morning and it does not matter what you and i did yesterday. you see, tomorrow is not promised to any of us. your human contract does not give you and me automatic salvation. you and me have salvation available to us bases on God’s grace through faith. the availability of salvation is based on passage of scripture we all know, st. John 3:16. there is something else that comes out of this passage. the instinctive response to grace is gratitude. you see, the ground floor of authentic gratitude is grace. a lot of people are not grateful. they do no think that they have anything to be grateful for, they also think that everything they have they deserve to have. there are some folk who think that everything they have they worked for and the world owes it to them. when people think like that they do not have the capacity for authentic gratitude. authentic gratitude is grounded in your being in touch with God’s grace. so, when i think about what God has done for me and when i think about how disobedient and unfaithful i have been out of the ground of my gratitude comes conscious understanding that i am what i am by the grace of God.you see, when people understand how the grace of God really work, they stop taking for granted that they are the cause of their good fortune. i’m thankful because i know better than anybody else that i don’t deserve His goodness, and if you will be honest you know about you and you know where the lord has brought you from. let us not forget to read our Bibles, and may God bless you rEal GOOD, and may He ever keep you in His loving care.

Advice Column: Ask Karen Hollie In His Service

he only thing that makes life worth living, whatever our age or condition is service for the lord. Moses, the author of Psalm 90, lived a long time and knew this geraldine Davidson-hooker truth well. indeed, he was one hundred twenty years old when he died: his sight unimpaired and his vigor not abated (Deut. 34:7). this is the same man who said we can expect seventy years, or eighty at the most. the truth is no one knows for sure how long one will live. there are physical and environmental indicators, and educated guesses called actuarial tables, but only God knows. Moses’ life span was off the chart. He was healthy and sharp until the end. He probably wrote this psalm at about age eighty, early in israel’s wilderness journey. little did he know he still had forty years of hard work ahead! None of us knows what we’ll face or how long we have. Even those genetically predisposed to some diseases can’t be sure they’ll get them. whatever may happen, Moses says, “work.” ask God to prosper what you do, and do everything for his glory. Don’t sit around worrying about the future. look at what God is doing and join the action. stay busy serving Him, however you can, until the end. the Christian life isn’t defined by age or worry about aging but by joyful work for the lord, as long as he gives strength to hands and head.

Morgan through the great tribulation and lost their lives because of their faith in Christ, standing before the throne of God praising Him day and night. there was a company that no man could number, people from every race every tongue and every nation, all was one flock. since we are all going to be one flock in heaven a little practice at the 11: O’clock hour on sunday would be in order. they wore white robes of victory. God is the great saviour and deliverer of his people. the deliverance which he gives is not the deliverance of escape but the deliverance of conquest. it is not a deliverance which saves a man from trouble but one

which brings him triumphantly through trouble. it does not make life easy, but it makes life great. Our Morning message was delivered by Pastor lloyd Morgan from the subject “the lords concern for a concerned seeker” acts 8:26-35.Philip was not only a faithful deacon/ preacher, he was also an obedient personal worker. like his Master, he was willing to leave the crowds and deal with one lost soul. the angel could have told this Ethiopian official how to be saved, but God has not given the commission to angels: He has given it to His people. angels have never personally experienced God’s grace; therefore, they can never bear witness of what it means to be saved. Philip’s experience should encourage us in our own personal witness for the lord. God directed Philip to the right person at the right time. we are not likely to have angels instruct us, but we can know the guidance of the Holy spirit in our witnessing, if we are walking in the spirit and praying for God’s direction. Be Blessed.

Prayer Closet

E

ven though i have expressed much concern about spending quality time in the prayer closet, i also believe we should spend some time praying with others. Praying with others often brings us special Pastor Clarence henderson encouragement. Jesus said, “again i say unto you, that if two of shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my father which is in heaven. for where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am i in the midst of them.” (Matthew 18:19 & 20). Perhaps we would see great things happening in our churches if we spent more time praying together. we can see in the book of acts what priority the believers gave to prayer. and they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

he l.a lakers got knocked out of the play-offs by the Dallas Mavericks. Can you believe that? the thought to be invincible leon Simon lakers, were swept by the thought to be inept Mavericks. immediately after that myth was dismissed the lakers dismissed another myth that i’ve always known to be false. Phil Jackson said that could have been his last game as a coach. and most people thought that the first consideration would go to Brian shaw. “NOt’. that’s against the lakers’ true nature. i have never been a laker fan for that reason. when african american players take off take those shorts the lakers are finished with them. let’s take a look at previous years. they took care of Jerry west; they took care of Mitch Kupchak, Kurt rambis etc. i don’t have to name anymore you get my drift. Elgin Baylor wound up with the Clippers. Michael Cooper, Byron scott, Kareem abdul Jabbar, and James worthy had to go else where. are you beginning to get the picture? Magic Johnson got a brief chance, but he had to buy into the team. the ultimate disrespect came a few years back they picked up alcoholic rudy tomjanovich. Now that the team is set up for the triangle offense they allow Brian shaw to be interviewed by Golden state, and the lakers bring in rick Edleman. another recycled coach. i understand that Kobe wanted shaw. it doesn’t matter if its true or not, i do know that had Phil Jackson given his blessings Mr. shaw would be the next lakers coach. l.a. has always been thought of as the land of opportunity and a very liberal place for african americans. some of that could be true, with the Dodgers and Jackie robinson. let’s us not forget rodney King and the Dodgers came from los angeles. Now let’s go about 3500 miles northeast. the Celtics are a team that most of us dislike made Bill russell a player coach before he quit playing. so that dispelled the theory that the lakers don’t want shaw because of his association with some of the lakers players and the age thing. russell coached the same guys he played with. Celtics always take care of their own, black or white – K.C. Jones, Paul silas, Dave Cowans, etc. i didn’t think i would see in my lifetime that the Utah Jazz, Memphis Grizzles and New Orleans Hornets would hire african american coaches; and the los angeles lakers are still making excuses. Kareem abdul Jabbar one of the NBa’s best ever; he played for one of the best college coaches ever – John wooden; that alone is a better resume than Phil Jackson had when he first started coaching. yet Jabbar couldn’t get his foot in the door. the next time you have $170.00 give away don’t buy a lakers jersey see if you can buy your kid “hooked on Phonics “ and send them to sunday school.

he Dallas Mavericks Basketball team means business! the Mavs are 3 games away from playing for another NBa Championship. tuesday night Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavs upset Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City thunder by a score of 121 – 112. Dirk was perfect from the free throw line setting an NBa record for the most free throws made without a miss and made 12 of his 15 field goals. He ended the night with 48 points, Jason terry had 24 and J.J. Barea had 21 points. the Mavs got off to a slow start, during the first half, with the lead shifting back and forth, but as the game went on, it was obvious that the Mavs were serious about return-

ing to the NBa finals. the Mavs led by as much as 20 points, and every time it seemed like they would silence the thunder, Kevin Durant came roaring back. But, Durant couldn’t do it all. He was pretty much on his own as his trusted team mate russell westbrook was shut down. the Mavs defense rendered westbrook’s transition offense ineffective down the stretch. Dirk’s performance on the court tuesday night proves he deserves to the Mavs’ franchise player. His supporting cast of Jason terry, J.J. Barea and shawn Marion is proof positive that the Mavs are in it to win it! the Mavs will have wednesday off but will return to the aaC thursday night before heading to Oklahoma on saturday night. will it be brooms for Kevin

he city of Dallas mourns the death of ron springs, the former teammate to whom Everson walls had donated a kidney in 2007, had died in a Dallas hospital at the age of 54. “we are people of faith, and we never gave up hope that he would regain consciousness,” walls said. springs’s health had improved after the transplant, then, 226 days later, he fell into a coma after minor surgery to remove a cyst from his arm. “He seemed to be holding his own.” walls played with springs on Cowboys

teams in the early 1980s and was the first athlete to donate an organ to a former teammate. “He touched a lot of people. His impact was universal. He made a difference,” walls told the star-telegram. “it was like he was sacrificed for that. “He is the face of the sacrifice and the strength of people who deal with kidney disease and diabetes.” as springs’s condition deteriorated from diabetes, his son, redskins defensive back shawn springs, considered quitting football to give his father a kid-

His father would not hear of it. “i think that was a tremendous gesture, and it just justifies the fact that he’s a loving son,” ron springs told Jason la Canfora of the Post. “But i couldn’t have let him do that, because i always prayed and wanted him to be a professional athlete, so i would not have shortened his career by no means necessary.” Born Nov. 4, 1956 in williamsburg, Virginia to willie roscoe and Ethelyn springs and passed away May 12, 2011 in Dallas, texas. a graduate of Ohio

state University where he played for the Buckeyes, he played eight seasons in the Nfl, for the Dallas Cowboys from 19791984, followed by the tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1985-1986. survived by his wife, adriane springs; mother, Ethelyn springs; children, shawn a. springs, ayra C. springsfoster and husband Je’kel and ashley V. springs; brothers, roscoe springs, Horace (Otis) smith; sister, Ethelyn l. springs; and five grandchildren.

elcome to the weekend, baaaby! How about them MaVs???? from the “say the right thing” file: “No matter the outcome of this season, the Mavericks can be proud of what Kevan Browning they’ve accomplished!” from the “How i really feel” file: Gooooo MaVs! this is our year! No matter what, you can dig deep and pull this thing out! Goooooo Mavs...Boooo Oklahoma thunder, lol!!! Game three is tonight on EsPN at 8P from OKC! Go Mav’s! former California first lady Maria shriver on thursday called “heartbreaking” husband arnold schwarzenegger’s admission Maria Shriver that he had fathered a child with a former household staff member more than a decade ago. the trippy thing is that the woman he was creeping with continued to work for them, living under the same roof until this January. that’s just messy... i could see you sistas taking off your heels and earrings in preparation for a termination, a judgment day as the truth and lies have come out on Conan! seriously though, no matter how wealthy or in the public eye, people are people. Keep this family in your prayers! Our next story does not deal with celebrity, but consistency, lol! Don Gorske sometimes cannot taste the Big Macs he eats every day. But he keeps eating and this week hit a Big Mac milestone: Gorske consumed his 25,000th Big Mac. Gorske, 57, says that since birth his taste buds have fluctuated in sensitivity, possibly worsening when he worked inside tanks at a factory. However, not knowing whether he’ll taste the Big Macs

has not dampened his love for the 2 all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun! after alicia Keys and now husband swizz Beatz got together, there was just a little fuss about the singer being a possible home wrecker. in Alicia Keys fact, many praised the union and totally dismissed the producer’s previous marriage. the latest Essence has the full scoop! “we didn’t start seeing each other until months after they had separated,” Keys told Essence. “i was aware of all the false things that were being said about me it definitely hurt.” Big ups to Kid rock, who donated $10,000 to five community organizations in order to fulfill a promise he made at the recent fight for freedom fund dinner where he was honored. i was surprised when america’s Most wanted was cancelled after 23 years. the show’s host John walsh, started the show that’s helped captures tons of crooks, who would have been incognito and possibly unpunished!!!!! we’ve heard of parents-to-be polling face book friends on baby names, but naming your kid after the face book button users have grown to love and use? Now that’s different. so when a couple named their baby like after face book, we couldn’t help but chuckle. “it’s short and sweet,” Vardit adler, like’s mother said. i’m sure they’ve already purchased his collar for shopping trips around wal-Mart! Happy Birthday to yOU and all the Celebs celebrating birthday this week: reggie Jackson is 65, Grace Jones and Mr. t are 59, sugar ray leonard 55, Janet Jackson 45, Busta rhymes 39, Deuce Deuce , #22 Emmitt smith is 42 and tahj Mowry is 24! thanks for rollin with a Brotha in the Elite News and online at www.dfwelitenews.com
