Gone but not forgotten 10th Anniversary of “911”

By: Bettye Williams

n every month of each year, many events are celebrated. for instance, people celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, concerts, etc. However, september is a little different these days. that’s because this september 11th is the 10th anniversary of the “911” attack on american soil, and for many who suffered losses of any kind, this will be a difficult time to remember. On september 11, 2011, we all will remember the attack on american soil that took place in New York and washington, D.C., ten years ago. Unlike most anniversaries, this anniversary is not a celebration - it is a memorial that stands current in the minds and hearts of many americans and others around the world. i usually do not remember exact dates and times, except for the birth of my children, but this date and time will forever stand out for me. i can remember exactly where i was during the hour of the attack. On september 11, 2001, at 8:45 a.m., on a tuesday morning, i was watching the tV, waiting on good Morning america to come on, and an interruption came through that shocked the world. i listened as they announced that an american airlines Boeing 767, loaded with 20,000 gallons of jet fuel, crashed into the North tower of the world trade Center in New York City, which left a hole near the 80th floor of the 110-story skyscraper, instantly killing hundreds of people and trapping hundreds more on higher floors. My eyes stared at the tV thinking either the pilot must have fallen asleep to crash into a tall building. Not knowing, as i continued to watch for 18 more minutes, i would witness a second Boeing 767 come from nowhere, hit the second tower about the 60th floor. the collision caused a massive explosion that showered burning debris over surrounding buildings and the streets below. about 15 minutes later, i fell to my knees and cried as i watched in horror the south tower of the world trade Center collapse in a massive cloud of dust and smoke. to see people running for their lives and knowing

that so many others had gone to work that day not knowing that that would be their last day on earth. as i continued to shed tears and pray for hope and survival for the people who were still in that building, american airlines flight #77 circled over downtown washington, D.C., and slammed into the west side of the Pentagon military headquarters at 9:45 a.m. One hundred twenty five (125) military personnel

On September 11, 2001, the TwinTowers were hit during a terriost attack that devistated the nation, injured and killed thousands

My Soul Loves Song of Songs 3:1-5 All night long on my bed I looked for the one my heart loves; I looked for him but did not find him. I will get up now and go about henry Nelson the city, through its streets and squares; I will search for the one my heart loves. So I looked for him but did not find him. The watchmen found me as they made their rounds in the city. Have you seen the one my heart loves? Scarcely had I passed them when I found the one my heart loves. I held him and would not let him go till I had brought him to my mother’s house to the room of the one who conceived me. Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you by the gazelles and by the Does of the field: Do not arouse or awaken love until it so desires.” ne of the most misunderstood books in the Old testament is probably the song of solomon

O

or called by some, “the song of songs”. One may wonder how is it possible that there can be a Book of the Bible that does not mention the name of God. theologians have argued why this book was included into the Canon over the years. My training tells me to first read the Bible as it is. this is a love story and we are reading a love letter. Have you ever received a love letter? Not, roses are red, and violets are blue. sugar is sweet and so are you. No! i mean a real love letter that is written from the depths of one’s feelings that expresses the secret thoughts, desires and dreams. a love letter your loved one has sprinkled on it a drop of the finest – perfume, white Diamonds; or cologne Hugo Boss. it reminds you so much of that special someone that sometimes you do not reread it, you just smell the letter. Have you ever received a love letter whose language was so descriptive that you had to hide it between the mattresses of your bed to prevent anyone from seeing it? a temptations type love letter: you have a smile so bright, you could have been a candle; you holding me so tight, you could have been a handle. Have you ever

received a love letter? that is what the song of solomon is a love letter between a bride and a groom. it was written by a love child – solomon. You remember his father David and his mother Bath-sheba. David one day looking over his roof top saw Uriah’s wife, Bath-sheba. from that day he desired her and had her husband assigned to a dangerous mission after trying to convince him to stay with his wife after David had spent time with her. Uriah was killed in battle and David took Bath-sheba as his bride. Nathan, David’s Pastor comes to him one day with a message from the lord. there were two men in one city; the one rich and the other poor. the rich man had many flocks and herds: but the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had brought up and nourished: and it grew up together with his children and was unto him a daughter. a traveler came to the king and instead of taking one of his many flocks and herds; he took the poor man’s one lamb for the traveler. David became angry against the man and said to Nathan, the man shall surely die for doing this thing. Nathan

C ity B eat said, thou art the man and told him all of the evil he will bring upon himself because of this terrible sin. David puts on sack cloth and ashes and says these famous words: Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy loving-kindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. Purge me with hyssop, and i shall be clean: wash me, and i shall be whiter than snow. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy Holy spirit from me. restore unto me the joy of my salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. solomon was a wise child. if you would like to have the rest of this week’s message please request it at: revelations_75044@msn.com “trust in the lord with all your heart. lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your path.” Proverbs 3:5-6

911.....continued from front cover and civilians were killed in the Pentagon along with all 64 people aboard the airliner. i was so shocked and scared because, at that moment, i knew now for certain that america was under attack. i could not take my eyes off the tV. i had never seen anything like that ever in my life, not even at the movies. to my surprise and shock the other trade Center tower had collapsed. Besides me still on my knees praying and asking God to be with those people and their families during this devastating tragedy, all i could say was how could a steel structural skyscraper that had withstood winds in excess of 200 mph and a large conventional fire, not withstand the tremendous heat generated by the burning jet fuel. Close to 3,000 people died in and around the world trade Center, including a staggering 343 firefighters and paramedics, 23 New York City police officers, and 37 Port authority police officers who were struggling to complete an evacuation of the buildings and save the office workers trapped on higher floors. Only six people survived in the world trade Center tower at the time of the collapse. six people out of 3,000 survived…any survivors was a miracle from God! almost 10,000 other people were treated for injuries, many severe. the attackers were islamic terrorists from saudi arabia and several other arab nations. reportedly financed by saudi fugitive Osama bin laden’s al Qaeda terrorist organization, they were allegedly acting in retaliation for america’s support of israel, its involvement in the Persian Gulf war, and its continued military presence in the Middle East. some of the terrorists had lived in the United states for more than a year and had taken flying lessons at american commercial flight schools. Others had slipped into the U.s. in the months before september 11, and acted as the “muscle” in the operation. the 19 terrorists easily smuggled box-

cutters and knives through security at three East Coast airports and boarded four flights bound for California, chosen because the planes were loaded with fuel for the long transcontinental journey. this year, the nation need not ask where is Osama bin laden or was there ever an Osama bin laden? the nation knows that Osama Bin laden was real and as President Obama announced on May 1, 2011, that Osama Bin laden is dead after a firefight, a small team of american forces killed bin laden and took possession of his body, the president said. we all remember the twin towers that was destroyed on september 11, 2001, marking the first ever attack on Us soil, now being replaced by a single skyscraper. Construction on a new tower slowed down tremendously because of controversies surrounding the new building’s renaming from the original “freedom tower” in 2008, to “1 world trade Center”. Construction at Ground Zero has begun and completion is set for

2013. take a look at the date, september 11th; many of you may not realize that this is the date of the first sunday of the regular season of the Nfl opening weekend: Cowboys at Jets. Many have asked should the games be played. was that disrespectful? what about safety for both the public and the players? remember, the faa took the unprecedented step of grounding every single airplane in the air in the immediate hours after the attacks and full ground-stopped and no one wanted to get on a plane. where were you on september 11, 2001? will you continue to remember september 11? the Elite News will, and so will i. the Elite News wants to ask everyone, all ages, race, nationality, culture, or religion to stop whatever you are doing at 11:50 a.m. on september 11, and take a moment of silence for the 9/11 victims and remember that this is the 10th anniversary in honor of those who were lost.

very time i visit a city, i search out good southern style cuisine, better known as down home cooking. this past weekend, while in Orlando, florida attending the MEaC/swaC Challenge, i located Nikki’s Place soul food & southern Cuisine, a stone’s throw, in the southern sector just south of Downtown Orlando. the food was tasty and good. Nikki’s served up everything from smothered neckbones, fried chicken wings, beef tips, baked chicken, cabbage, mac n cheese, sweet yams, cornbread, tomatoes and okra, and much more. i chose the neckbones, yams, tomatoes and okra, cornbread and lemonade/sweet tea combination. it was all very good and made for a great dining experience. in fact, i returned the next day for breakfast before starting my day. it was just as satisfying. Nikki’s is a small diner, exceptionally clean, with a wonderful southern style hospitality that we received from servers sharon and Cassandra, who also added a

few good stories and a bit of the history of Nikki’s Place. Nikki and his staff made us feel right at home. when we venture back through Orlando, we are sure to return for some more of that hearty home cooking and southern style hospitality. Nikki’s Place has a history dating back to the 1950s, when it was initially called roser’s Bakery. Nick worked for the bakery for many years and then in 1999, became owner and entrepreneur. today,

Nikki’s Place soul food & southern Cuisine is a flourishing operation owned and operated by Nick and Elaine akins. so, if you just happen to be traveling through Orlando, florida and crave good home cooking at a good price, look up Nikki’s Place, located at 742 w. 7th Annual MEAC/SWAC Challenge PV Pulverized here’s always something special about HBCU football. this past weekend was no different in Orlando, florida. Driving up to the stadium, you could feel excitement and football in the air. Barbeque smoke everywhere with all kinds of tailgating activity added to the excitement before the game. it was Prairie View a&M vs. BethuneCookman at high noon, at the florida Citrus Bowl and Bethune-Cookman turned out to be too tough for the PV Panthers. at every turn, PV could not catch a break, because BethuneCookman took advantage of every single opportunity. Every Prairie View miss became an opportunity for BethuneCookman, and believe me, they were on top of their game. there were no “angels in the Outfield” for Prairie View. the MEaC/swaC is played at a neu-

tral site within one of the conferences every year. in 2005, the challenge was south Carolina state University vs. alabama state University with south Carolina prevailing with 27-14. in 2006, it was Hampton Univ. defeating Grambling state Univ. 27-26. this year’s game was the first meeting between Prairie View a&M and BethuneCookman. Needless to say, BethuneCookman stole the show with a score of 63-14. there is one thing we can always count on when attending an HBCU football game, the great tradition of a memorable band experience. Both bands were outstanding. Even though BethuneCookman’s band outnumbered Prairie View’s band, they both gave exciting and memorable performances. BethuneCookman even had the audacity to call out Prairie View’s name during their performance. But nonetheless, Prairie View’s “the storm” held their own.

ur church school lesson w a s “righteousness and wisdom” from Proverbs 3:1-12.this was a very timely lesson because there seem to be no eld lloyd T. Morgan real lack of knowledge but a great lack of wisdom in our society today. we do do well to pay close attention to the wise admonitions of solomon. an intresting point of the lesson was that solomon not only gave wise advice but he also showed what reward following it would bring. Our morning message was delivered by Pastor lloyd Morgan from the subject “in remembrance of Him” isa 53:1-12. we need to understand that love is reciprocal, if a person shows love to you, you should return love in kind. in life there are givers and takers, givers find joy and fulfillment in showing love, while takers think they should

receive love always but never give it. Jesus was a giver of love. Jesus said in John 15:13-17 “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends”. Jesus loved the unlovable even unto death. for those that may have forgotten and take the communion service lightly let me tell you today that our salvation may be free to us but it is not cheap, it cost heaven its best. Each first sunday it has been the custom of the New testament church to gather and participate in the communion service. this is the way in which the church have always responded to Jesus commandment in luke 22:19-20; and he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, this is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. likewise also the cup after supper, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you. Every believer should look forward to and participate in this great occasion. Be blessed!

et’s consider our attitude or position in prayer, by comparing our practice with that of the religious people of Jesus day. there were rules about looking towards Pastor Clarence henderson the temples or the idols which represented God. there were holy rugs upon which to stand or kneel. sometimes the religious person would “lift up holy hands” at other times fold the hands. Often would be prostrated on the ground, or in a kneeling position, with the palms of the hands on a rug with the forehead touching the ground before each position. Christ placed little or no emphasis on these outward physical manifestations in prayer, but he was deeply concerned about the attitude of the heart.

fter watching the Cowboys play this preseason games we also watched Jason Garrett in his first full head coaching season. leon Simon i see an awful lot of Jimmy Johnson coaching Philosophy, and apparently Jerry Jones is allowing him to get it done. the first thing Jimmy did was get rid of some guys that settle into that losing routine. Michael irvin was here a year ahead of Jimmy and gave Jimmy a list of guys that accepted losing. Jason made his own list. Marion Barber is the first to come to mind. Marion chose to try and break a tradition that had been in place since the 60’s. Every coach the Cowboys had requested

september 9, 2011

players and media to wear coat and tie when getting on Cowboy charter going out of town. You can wear what you want to coming back home. with Coat and tie, crew or turtle neck, Marion wanted to look like he was going fishing. aside from attitude, i think the Cowboys got better running back that is fast. felix Jones got smaller. DeMarcus Murray and Phillip tanner are much faster than Choice and Barber. as far as smaller and faster running backs, Jason got smaller and more athletic in the offensive line. these new offensive linemen can get outside plus they are fast enough to run screen passes. that is something that hasn’t been done in this town since tom landry left. thanks to Brady James who suggested that some of his teammates came here looking for entitlements. they thought super-bowls came with being a Cowboy. Brady James himself is probably in his last season with the Cowboys but for sure it will be his last year as a starter. leonard Davis, Mark Columbo, andre Gurode aside

www.dfwelitenews.com

from being too big and slow, they were too old, and you know they had way too much influence in the locker room. troy aikman says if they don’t win this year they should blow it up and start all over. if you cut three offensive linemen, a starting running back, and a starting wide receiver, it would appear to me that something to that affect has already started. Maybe next year they will look at the other side of the ball. i knew terrence Neuman was going to have a groin pull in March. terrance had these problems every year. He will have a couple more this year. i don’t want to predict doom, and gloom, but felix Jones will watch somebody else run and pull a hamstring or groin. those two will definitely get injured. as for felix, i wouldn’t advise getting hurt too often. Misters Murray and tanner got you in their sights. You don’t have that luxury anymore, stay healthy man. i hope they soon take that luxury away from terrence Neuman

regg a. smith & James Butler Bring Cool Blues to red Hot & Blue Grill Duncanvillefor the second time this summer, master balladeer Gregg a. smith and guitarist extraordinaire James louis Butler have teamed up to bring the blues to customers at the red Hot & Blue BBQ Grill 106 East Highway 67 @ Main st. Duncanville, tX. this event took place on september 3rd from 8 pm to 10 pm and both the entertainers, customers and staff had a great time. James Butler led off the event with his experienced touch on the guitar singing both new and old tunes and interacting with the crowd. His masterful playing kept the crowd mesmerized and involved in the performance. at one point he even had the crowd doing the “bird”.after he got the crowd warmed up Gregg a. smith came on to do what he does best, sere-

nade the ladies with his Barry white like vocal skills. He sang songs from the old school, and tracks from his Greatest Hits album like “stuck On You” with James adding hot licks in the background. the crowd was larger and stayed longer than the first event which is a testament to the drawing power of these two talented performers. i’m sure they are looking forward to their next performance at the red Hot & Blue Grill. Gregg a. smith’s latest album is “forever Young” which can be found at forever Young records in Grand Prairie and James Butler’s latest album is “why Did U answer My Cell phone?”, available on itunes and Butler records.

elcome to the weekend, BaaaBY!!! where did these cool breezy mornings come from??? as i write, a dog’s barking someKevan Browning where in the distance, a light sprinkle of a wind is flowing thru my bedroom window, small birds are chirping and i’ve got a water aerobics class staring me in the face this aM...lol....life is not bad! Our 1st place texas rangers are into the last 20n games of the season and kick off a weekend series against the Oakland a’s...with the l.a. angels breathing down their necks, ron washington and the boys need our support...let’s Go, rangers! saturday Night, will you brave the outdoor Gexa Energy Pavillion for lil wayne, ric ross, Keri Hilson and other Hip Hoppers? should be a good show, hope weezie is in top form! i vote the new movie “Contagion” as “Movie Most likely to freak You Out and Make You Paranoid”.... Nuff said, ha,lol! speaking of movies, did you know “the Help” has been number 1 at the box office for the last four weeks? Okay, now lets get to the second most exciting part of the Serena Williams weekend(after Church/#1 of course)sunday Night, 7:20 on Channel 5, our Dallas

Cowboys kick off the 2011-2012 season in New York against rex ryan and his NY Jets! it’s the anniversary of 9/11 and emotions will be sky high! look for a special Nfl presentation before all games this weekend commemorating the heroes that lost their lives during the terrorist attacks. 10 years, can it really be 10 years since you woke up to, heard on your car radio, from a relative, friend, that we were under attack? One of the days where everyone remembers where they were..Me, i was just turning on the tV and did not know what to make of this “thing” on tV...i wish today that eddie Murphy the idiots in politics would grab the same feeling of being “One Nation, Under God, indivisible with liberty and Justice for all” that we felt the day of this tragedy! instead they bicker and play silly games with the lives of millions...Okay...let a man slow down! all eyes on serena williams at the U.s.
