An American Disgrace
hen I was a member of the armed forces of this country, tens of thousands of men and women who looked like me went abroad to fight for freedom. We went to countries such as Germany, Italy and France to fight against dictators who were oppressing people and killing innocent men, women and children. When we returned home we were faced with racial discrimination and indignities that even foreign prisoners of war who were confined in this country did not have to face. It was a demeaning experience for many of us. I knew soldiers, who fought bravely on foreign shores, who never recovered from mental madness that social conditions in this country drove them to. They became psychologically wounded and mentally disenfranchised. They watched with little joy as the nation celebrated Veterans Day. They believed that as veterans they would have been the recipients of better treatment. Fast forward some 50 years and many of our veterans suffer. The country asks them to travel to faraway places such as Iraq and Pakistan to fight wars for “justice and liberty.” Many of them lose their families, their jobs and their limbs while they are away fighting in conflicts whose origins they will never understand. Nor for issues that have little to do with them. The soldiers who come home today are faced with issues such as drug abuse and homelessness. Substance abuse and binge drinking has alienated them from their families. They suffer from depression and other mental illnesses. A recently release government report stated that almost 140,000 veterans spend at least one night a year in a shelter. I often wonder if the young men and women who we asked to go to war would march so eagerly into conflicts if they knew how they would be treated once they return home. All of us know that the brave soldiers who fight the country’s wars do not come from privilege. Presidential candidate Mitt Romney boasts of having six “fine young sons,” but none of them have ever worn a uniform other than that of the Boy Scouts. Yet, it is men like Romney who talk of sending our troops to fight in conflicts around the world. Perhaps the reason that he does not ask his sons to fight is that he is aware of the realities that will await them when they return from war, and he knows the consequences his son’s families will face while they are in some distance land. It is also men like Romney who march at the head of Veterans Day parades while the real heroes sit in psych wards in nearby veterans’ hospitals that are poorly funded by the government. As a country, we can do more for our veterans. It is meaningless to continue to go to cemeteries on the last day of May and plant flags on their graves while we treat them with contempt while they are alive. We treat the hot dogs that we eat on Veterans Day with more dignity than we do the soldiers who defend us. Will someone pass the mustard please? June 1, 2012

The University of Texas at Arlington will announce at a press conference next Tuesday that the school is going to name a scholarship after William “Bill” Blair, establish an annual lecture series named for him, and archive his personal and private papers so that students, scholars and members of the public will be able to review the life and work of one of the most well known newspaper publishers in all of Texas. The press conference will take at 10 a.m. in the main library on the university’s Arlington based campus. Members of the public are invited to attend the ceremony which will take place on the sixth floor of the library where the university houses “special collections” that have been donated by prominent Texans. Mr. Blair and officials from the university will make remarks. “The university is delighted that we are going to be able to honor Mr. Blair and to make his work available for scholars, students and others to review and access for generations to come,” said Dr. Marvin Dulaney who chairs the department of history at the university. “We are very proud that we are able to do this. It is a major step for the university community.”
Dr. Marvin Dulaney
Recently, Mr. Blair, the founder of the Elite Newspaper, decided that he would donate his personal papers to an institution in the state of Texas that would preserve them and make them available to members of the public forever. “I have never been a selfish person and I want to share my work with people who will live long after I am gone, said Mr. Blair who is 10 years short of having lived 100 years. The materials donated by Mr. Blair include
copies of the Elite Newspaper, dating back to the early 1980s, his personal papers and items from the Elite News Religious Hall of Fame. They chronicle the history of Dallas dating back to the 1950s. Some who have seen the materials have characterized them as “priceless.” “Mr. Blair’s work is well known throughout the city and state,” Dr. Dulaney said. “Now the work that he has performed for the last half century will be available to people around the world via the world-wide web. This is monumental.” A number of Texas based institutions were interested in the “Blair papers” once the announcement was made that they were available. The University of Texas at Arlington was among the first to respond. The decision to donate the papers to them was made because of their proximity to Dallas, the quality of their archival operation and the relationship that Dr. Dulaney and his colleagues established with Mr. Blair, according to those close to the decision. last year the city of Dallas honored Mr. Blair by naming a city park in his honor. He has been also honored by the Negro Baseball league where he was a player, various cities throughout Texas and numerous civic and veteran’s organizations.

gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our lord” Amen! Paul also affirmed the universality of death when earlier he penned these words, “Just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come” James, the brother of our lord, also spoke of the inevitability of death. James 1:15 says, “Desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” When New Testament writers speak of the universality and inevitability of death, they echo the writers of the Old Covenant. God warned our first parents that disobedience would bring death. Early in the account of man’s creation, we read God’s command. Genesis 2:16, 17 says, “The lord God commanded the man, saying, You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it
Prayer Closet By Rev. Clarence Henderson
I really need to remind you that there are many things that are hindrances to our prayer. After our lord gave the model prayer (Matthew 6: 9-13), He hastened to inform us in no certain terms what the chief hindrance to prayer is. “For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if you forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses”. The lord stated the principle both positively and negatively so that we will get the point. Failure to forgive others is a major hindrance to our prayers. If you really want to see how important it is for us not to hold grudges or fail to forgive, I encourage you to read and meditate on Matthew 18: 21-35. How foolish it is for us to fail to forgive the few cents someone owes us, after our lord has cancelled our multi – billion dollar debt. www.dfwelitenews.com

you shall surely die’” Amen! God richly provided for man, and gave him all that was necessary for life, placing but one proscription on man’s activity he must not eat from one particular tree. Apparently, the man whom God had created understood this prohibition and had in fact communicated the divine proscription to the woman whom God gave him for companionship. When she was tempted, she repeated this proscription with the attendant statement of consequence. “The woman said to the serpent, ‘We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said in Genesis 3:2,3 “You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.” Of course, our first parents did sin, eating some of the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. As He had warned, God pronounced a curse on mankind. Genesis 3:19 says, “By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Amen! From this point forward, the theme of our existence is that we toil and labor until we die. In fact, this becomes a recurring statement throughout the Old Testament. Elihu cautions Job and his comforters that should God withdraw His Spirit. Job 34:15 says, “All flesh would perish together, and man would return to dust.” Amen! It is the Spirit of God that gives us life. The statement accords with what we learn con-

cerning the Master when Paul writes in Colossians 1:17, Christ “is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” A similar statement can be found in Psalm 104:29. The Wise Man concerned himself with man’s frailty; and in light of mankind’s frailty, he provided excellent advice for all who would honor God. You may recall that Solomon wrote in Ecclesiastes 3:20, “All go to one place. All are from the dust, and to dust all return.” People are moving inexorably to their long home, if the physical is all that matters. If this is all there is, we had better make it count. However, there is more to life than the mere physical. Solomon cautioned mankind to think of his end when he concluded with this soliloquy. “Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near of which you will say, ‘I have no pleasure in them.” It is a mark of wisdom to recognize your frailty and to prepare for what is inevitable. Welcome to the weekend, Baaaby! Yea for a short week! That's the best thing about a long weekend, like the one we just had. The only problem comes when you forget what day it is,lol. That happened to me this week. I was relaxing comfortably when I got a phone calling saying, "Where is your article", the ladies are waiting to fit it into the paper. So here goes, lol! My goal last weekend was to see Men In Black 3, which we did. We also saw a movie that I was not expecting to like at the suggestion of my daughter. Sasha Baron Cohen's "The Dictator" was hilarious. Maybe you saw his first Movie "Borat". I was thinking, it can't be better than Borat, but like wow, it was! I laughed for over an hour, almost non-stop! Toliver’s Talents
By Mark A. Toliver II Elite News Sports Writer
This past week I had a conversation with a student- athlete about a concussion test she was required to take. I’m aware of the resent danger surrounding the sport of football, I'm aware of the problem that football is having with concussions, but this athlete just happened to be a female. I know that the possibility of a concussion can happen in any sport, but the young lady runs track!! This conversation started with the topic of concussion and went to several stages. One of the most talked about issues was the development of the equipment. It is my opinion that when the hard shell helmets we're created football became more dangerous. I saw a picture of Jim Thrope, he was wearing a leather helmet and leather shoulder pads! I know that Jim Thrope played back in the day, but Thorpe was a great player! One of the first instances of head gear dates to 1896 when lafayette College halfback George "Rose" Barclay began to use straps and earpieces to protect his ears. Many sources give credit for the creation of the helmet to James Naismith. Additionally, other sources credit the invention of the football helmet to U.S. Naval Academy Midshipman Joseph M. Reeves (later to become the "Father of Carrie Aviation "), who had a protective device on his head made out of mole skin to allow him to play in the 1893 Army-Navy game. later helmets were made of padded leather, and resembled aviators' helmets or modern day skull caps. In professional football, at least, they were also

optional. Some National Football league players, notably Hall- of Famer Bill Hewitt, played all or most of their careers without a helmet! This information was very informative, and gave me the impression that if the NFl would have just stayed with leather helmets the game would not be as violent as it is today. I say that only because Bill Hewitt played his entire career without a helmet!! The 1920's marked the first time in the sport of football that the idea of protection and a helmet started to be used. These helmets were made of leather and had padding and cushioning on the inside. Although better than no helmet at all, the helmets used in this time were almost completely useless. These particular " leather lids" absorbed a lot of heat making the helmet very uncomfortable to wear. The helmet barely protected the player from a full contact hit because there was not enough padding. The biggest problem with the early helmets was the helmet had no Face mask and the players entire face was exposed while being tackled at full speed, making injuries very prevalent. 1938 marked the new era in the football helmet history. The Riddell Company from Chicago, Illinois decided to start manufacturing plastic helmets because they felt it would be a safer material for football players to wear. Plastic was found to be more effective because it held its shape when full collision contact occurred on a play. These helmet were also much more comfortable and had more padding to cushion the head on a big hit! By the mid 1940s, helmets were finally required in the NFl. The helmets were still made of leather , but with improved manufac-
