The Dallas County Health Department has partnered with Reliant for the third consecutive year to launch Reliant’s Beat the Heat Centers, allowing North Texans to escape the heat and stay cool during the day during these hot summer months, while minimizing their home electricity use. Alongside Health Director Zachary Thompson was Misty White, Executive Director of the Reliant Energy Foundation, as Reliant announced its statewide summer assistance programs and provided details about the Heat relief options. The programs include roughly $800,000 in bill assistance, that will be made available through various social services agencies like the Dallas County Health and Human Services Department and Catholic Charities of Fort Worth, for flexible payment options for customers in need. Ms. White spoke additionally of the companies plan for free home energy monitors for low-income customers with smart meters during the summer months. Mr. Thompson and Ms.White commented that it’s essential for both private and public entities to partner to help provide support to citizens, especially the elderly and the financially challenged, over the course of this partnership. Mr. Thompson wanted to caution those who were looking for additional air conditioning and said they are only providing units to those who are totally without air. Ms. White said that Reliant wanted to be in service to its customers and not just provide a service. This service is available to customers in Dallas and Tarrant Counties. ecently I made a decision to donate my personal and professional papers to the University of Texas at Arlington. The University has taken possession of my life’s work, to archive it and make it available to scholars and students around the world via the internet. Additionally, the University will establish a scholarship fund in my name and will conduct an annual lecture series that will also be named after me. Each year students from the university will work as interns at the Elite Newspaper. The decision to choose the University of Texas at Arlington was made after an exhaustive process that included notifying numerous Texas institutions that my papers would be available for donation. A number of academic institutions contacted my personal representatives, Joseph Green Bishop and Clem Maddox, who represented me in the initial stages of the process; expressing their interest in archiving what is being referred to as the “William Blair Collection.” The University of Texas at Arlington was chosen after reviewing the presentations of numerous institutions of higher learning that expressed an interest in archiving the papers. UTA was chosen because of the campus’ proximity to Dallas, their ability to preserve the papers and the intense interest they demonstrated in the project. I had discussions with renowned historian Dr. Marvin Dulaney, who chairs UTA’s history department, and other members of the school’s academic staff. I was impressed with their sincerity and professionalism. Dr. Dulaney, who is well respected in the Dallas community, said that my papers would be of “tremendous value to the public and to scholars.” When I started my life’s work more than half a century ago I had no idea that my work product would be of interest to others. I wanted to be a good newspaper publisher and gave little thought to what would occur beyond that. Now, with the aid of modern technology and the staff of a major university; students, academics and members of the public from around the world will have access to my work.I am honored, thrilled and delighted. I would like to thank members of my family for supporting my decision. And I would like to thank Mr. Green-Bishop and Mr. Maddox for the diligence and hard work that they put into the project. Quite frankly, I did not expect all of this. I am indeed grateful to those many members of the public who have supported me and the Elite Newspaper. I am grateful to God who has kept me for so many years.

y sisters and brothers and I have always been extremely proud of our parents, Mozelle and William
Blair. They raised us in a home that was ripe with Christian values and they taught us to treat people fairly and with dignity. When we were much younger we were fascinated by the business activities of both our mother and our father. Our mother owned and operated a highlysought after catering business. As children we worked in the business and gained skills that many of our peers were unable to acquire as teenagers. We also were able to work with our father as he published an important community newspaper. We learned how to write stories, how to set type, answer phones and even sell advertising. We never took the accomplishments of our parents for granted. We were inspired by them, and felt very special that they were the people who had brought us into this world. You can imagine the joy that we now feel knowing that the monumental accomplish-

ments of our father will be archived and acknowledged by the University of Texas at Arlington. It is something that none of us ever imagined. While Dad worked day and night on the Elite Newspaper, we always knew that his work was important. However, we never knew that it was so significant that an institution of higher learning such as the University of Texas at Arlington would one day make it part of its “special collections,” and that it would share his work products with the world for generations to come. As a family we are very happy for our father, and we are very proud of him. We are also especially grateful to the University of Texas at Arlington for not only agreeing to archive his papers, but also for agreeing to name a scholarship fund in his honor and to establish a lecture series in his name. What the university has done has ensured that our father’s work with live forever, and that he will not be forgotten once the good Lord calls him home.

January 2, 1945 in Dallas, Texas, is the day Charles Butler Sr., began his worldly journey. From the beginning, his parents instilled an appreciation for blessings bestowed upon his life. The Dallas Independent School District provided the educational foundation. And during these formative years, Charles was known for academic aptitude and Shelia Butler, scholarship winner cimajie athletic powers. Best, and charles "Turk" Butler ll While attending Lincoln High School in South Dallas, the life-long nickname of "Turk" was given to Charles because of sports acumen. After graduating from high school, Turk furthered his education at Bishop College where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree and again graduated with academic and sports honors. Turk married Sheila Coit Butler in 1969 and to that union one son; Charles Earl Butler II was born. The family was devoted to the various aspects of the sports arena. This sports affinity showered the Butler family. Throughout his 35-year teaching career, Turk was fortunate to have crossed the paths of numerous youth. Students he taught at J.N. Erwin M.S., O.W Holmes M.S., D.A. Hulcy M.S., Hillcrest H.S., and Kimball H.S. are different today because he demanded maximum, not minimal sacrifices from individuals. Such a caring spirit influenced their lives tremendously. The numerous awards garnered by Turk serve as a testament to his dedication, commitment, and servant leadership. These distinctions include Who's Who Among America's Teachers Third Edition 1994, various Dallas ISD

see problems perhaps they are financial problems, family or personal problems, health problems. What is the biggest of all the problems you have? It is the one problem that no one likes to talk about the problem of death. Death is really everyone’s problem. Death does not care who you are regardless of your job, your physical condition, your family responsibilities, the number of people who depend on you death does not care about those things. It is a problem that everyone has, regardless of who they are. What is the death rate in the U.S., compared to Afghanistan? It is the same 100%. Death does not care where you live, or how healthy or technological you are. Why does not anyone want to talk about the problem of death? Two reasons, I believe. Reason number one: because there is no solution. No one will ever come up with a cure for death, a way to prevent it. Another reason people do not want to talk about death, is because no one really knows for sure what happens next. Is there really a heaven? Is there really a hell? Or, is it like in the movies after you die you become a ghost and float around the earth? Or are you reincarnated and become a cat, or a tree? What happens after you die? There is great confusion, there is no solution, and because of that,

Prayer Closet
June 23, 2012
By Rev. Clarence Henderson
Prayer is not some magic formula that is used to move the hand of God, but it is a sincere desire that moves the heart of God. G. Campbell Morgan said, “Men only pray with prevailing power when they pray in the midst of the whirlwinds, emergencies, and madness of life”. The Psalm writer said it so well in Psalms 126:6 “He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing bringing his sheaves with him”. The key word is weepeth. When life storms cause us to weep and we yet trust God in prayer, this kind of condition and attitude of prayer will put a demand on the Spirit of God. www.dfwelitenews.com

no one wants to talk about it. We live in a culture of denial. We pretend that death does not exist, but it does. Rather than live in denial, let us face this problem head-on this week. Let us look in the Bible, and as we do, you might be surprised to find that there is a solution to the problem of death. Our text for this week acknowledges that death is a problem. In verse 12, it says that “death comes to all men.” In verse 14, it says that “death reigns.” But the Bible also tells us the cause of death. Perhaps if we knew the cause, we could find the solution. In verse 12, it says, “Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned.” Sin is ultimately the cause of death. And it all began with one man Adam. In our Old Testament lesson for this week, we see the biggest disaster in the history of the world the fall into sin. Adam failed to obey God. And when that happened, sin entered the world. I do not think people really understand the magnitude of what happened that day in the Garden of Eden.

The Brownings then and now
Welcome to the weekend, Baby! Congrats to all the graduates and parents of 2012! You deserve kudo's for your awesome effort in completing 12 years of school. I want to encourage you to go further with your education! Even though you hear, "People w,ih college degrees can't find work", imagine what you are left with when you only have a high school diploma? Why a college education? It gives you options. My wife and kids were talking about those options recently. My wife Sheila has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. I have 32 years of success in the Radio Industry! My wife currently is a high school teacher, while I have a show that airs in 100 plus cities around the U.S. If they told me tomorrow my services were no longer needed, I'd have to think seriously about what I'd do. If her principal told my wife she was no longer needed, she could walk in an $80,000 a year job the next week. I've had a huge career, made a lot of money and in reality feel truly, truly blessed! Had I not been successful in my chosen field,
C H U R C H
I'd have gone back and grabbed a degree, no doubt! Since we moved to Dallas, I've had prime time gigs at 100.3 Jamz, K104, Magic 102 Jammin Oldies,Joy 104.9, Magic 94.5, 94.5 KSoul and now nationwide hosting a Rock N Roll show(Google Smokin Kevan) for Cumulus Media Networks. Each time, my talent spoke for me and God granted me favor. I understand how fortunate I've been. My wife has worked as an RN at a hospital, decided she was bored and became the person that approves/disapproves your bill for an insurance company. Then she decided she wanted to spend more time with our kids and ran the El Centro College Health Center under Dr. Lassiter. Later she chose to become a school nurse, so she'd have a chance to spend Summers with our kids and take care of me,lol! 10 years later she had the urge to become a teacher and she did, receiving an "offer she could not refuse." I have no doubt her next goal of becoming a college instructor will be reached, know why???? Because she has options. So be encouraged
graduates of 2012 to put yourself in position to have a future full of options! To be honest, I've had a blast, but wish I had the options my wife has. The options she gave herself when she was where the graduates of 2012 are now! There it is, y'all. O-PT-I-O-N-S! It was so cool receiving all the responses I've gotten on my month of travel columns and I've tried to respond to as many questions as possible and yes, I'll be in the islands in a couple of weeks, writing this column from the beach with a tall glass of Sangsters Original Jamaican Rum Creme and Appleton on the rocks by my side, along with the lady I wrote about above. This Sunday is our 22nd Anniversary and I am so glad when I had options while I played the dating game, I ended up with the Grand Prize! You can always reach me at smokinkevan@verizon.net. When audiences sit and listen to the crystal-like voice of Lauren Ashley they think of song birds like Anita Baker, Aretha Franklin and the late Whitney Houston. A native of Dallas, who was raised in Houston, Lauren is mesmerizing audiences throughout the southwest with her distinctive style and her classy performances. In March 2009, Lauren, 19, and her musical team released an album entitled “Heart of Star.” Her first single, Ambulance, rose to number three on the billboard charts and became number five in the R&B/ Hip Hop single sales. “I have been singing all of my life,” said Lauren, a Desoto resident who was home schooled by her parents, Vincent and Belinda, the owners of an insurance firm in Oak Cliff. “I remember first starting as a singer at a family reunion. People liked me and I have been singing ever since.” Lauren’s greatest exposure came when she appeared for three months on the hit television show called X-Factor. “I competed against 250,000 other entertainers from across the country and fin-

There has been recent conversation about the athletic-scholarship that was awarded to the son of a wealthy hiphop mogul. The conversation is all over the place and everybody is putting their two cents in. Basically some people are of the option that because Justin Combs is the son of millionaire Sean Combs he should give back the athletic scholarship that was awarded to him by UCLA. People are saying that because his father has money, and because his father can afford to pay his tuition, Justin should give back the scholarship.People are saying he should give it ba ck so that someone that really needs it can get an opportunity to go to college. Let me make this clear, UCLA does not just randomly hand out schalorships. Every student - athlete has to be recruited. The only way you get recruited is by being recognized. In order to be recognized you have to make plays. You have to make game changing, game breaking plays. The only way you get to make plays is by getting on the field. The only way you get on the field, is by becoming one of the best players on the team. The only way to become the best player on your team is by making a personal decision to be the best, and that takes a serious commitment . studentathletes have to meet the basic requirements set by the NCAA Clearing House. The student-athlete has to meet the requirement of the SAT a nd or the ACT. The quest to be a college athlete is not a easy task. There are millions of football players across America that believe they can

Saving the American Dream The importance of home ownership
By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson
June 8, 2012
The U.S. housing market is headed on a solid path to recovery. According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, mortgage delinquencies have declined for the fourth consecutive month in April, while sales of existing homes in the first quarter of 2012 were 5.3 percent higher than the same period last year. In Dallas County and North Texas, median home sales prices have increased, property values are up, and the total number of homes for sale has consistently declined. Yet, for thousands of existing homeowners in our area, these positive indicators do not show the complete picture. If you purchased a home before the housing bubble burst in 2008, your home value may still be well below the amount owed on an existing mortwww.dfwelitenews.com
gage. Being “underwater” on your mortgage – or owing more on the loan than the home’s actual value – can prove costly and frustrating for families who have continued to fulfill their financial obligations and made timely payments on their home loans. Impacted communities in North Texas cannot idly stand by, and so I want to acknowledge a unique opportunity coming to Dallas that may bring immediate mortgage relief to families.
The Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America (NACA) will be coming to the Dallas Fair Park on June 7 – 11, 2012, every day from 8a.m. to 8p.m. NACA’s “American Dream” event will bring dozens of trusted lenders from the area to restructure the terms of existing subprime or predatory mortgages directly with constituents. Thousands of homeowners may able to save money through reduced interest rates, lower monthly payments, and sometimes even principal reductions. Homeownership is a fundamental pillar of the American Dream, and I am committed to keeping that dream alive by providing assistance to help Americans and their families stay in their homes. For more information, questions or concerns, you may contact NACA directly at 1-888-499-6222.

New Campaign Message: Healing Matters
DALLAS – – Pastoral Counseling Center (PCC), formerly Pastoral Counseling and Education Center, announces their new tagline “healing matters.” The meaning behind the message is two-fold. First, it comunicates PCC’s staff members’ ability to help individuals work towards healing their mental health matters. Secondly, it communicates to clients, their families and the community the importance of mental health treatment. Clients want to be knowledgeable and comfortable with PCC before they step foot into a therapist’s office. As a result, a major portion of the update is the development of a new website, www.pccdallas.org. The site provides information on all of their available services. “In today’s society, seeking mental health treatment usually has a negative connotation. One of our goals is to overcome this association by getting information about PCC out to North Texas,” said Wayne Albrecht, Executive Director of Pastoral Counseling Center. “Individuals should be praised for their pursuit of a more meaningful and happier life, and we feel healing
