The Elite News and the University of Texas at Arlington recently entered into an unprecedented relationship that transferred ownership of the personal papers and other artifacts owned by the publication’s founder, William “Bill” Blair, to the Arlington- based academic institution. The University responded by agreeing to make Mr. Blair’s donated items available to scholars, students and members of the public for research and observation for decades to come. Mr. Blair formally signed the donation papers at a ceremony attended by University officials and members of the public at an hour-long ceremony held on January 5 in the school’s library where his papers will be housed. The collection includes the personal papers of Mr. Blair, the historical records of the newspaper he started, the records of the Elite News Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade, and items from the Elite News Religious Hall of Fame, which the newspaper started under Mr. Blair’s leadership. “We are delighted that Mr. Blair chose our university to house his collection,” said Dr. Marvin Du-

It will be invaluable to scholars.” Mr. Blair was surrounded by his family members at the ceremony. “Our father wanted the next generation to know the history of the times that we live in,” said Debra Blair Abron, the publisher of the newspaper and one of Mr. Blair’s daughters. “We are thrilled that the University of Texas at Arlington has found value in the work that our father has done for the past half century. Several responded within weeks after receiving the letter. Each of them expressed an interest. “This is a special day for our family,” said Darryl Blair, the paper’s senior editor and one of Mr. Blair’s sons. “We are very proud of our father and we are excited to be partnering with an institution such as the University of Texas at Arlington. They have been very kind

and we are looking forward to the various programs that are going to be created.” In addition to preserving Mr. Blair’s work product, the university also intends to establish a William Blair scholarship fund, name a lecture series after the former Negro League baseball pitcher and identify communications students to work as interns at the Elite News. “I want people for generations to come to know the history of those of us who are alive today,” said Mr. Blair. “I believe that the steps that we have taken today will accomplish that objective. This is a great day in my life and in the life of my

family. I am somewhat speechless.” The story of the Blair donation was placed on the international media agenda by NBC news which featured it shortly after it was announced. “What Mr. Blair has done is something that others should emulate,” said Dr. Jesse Ingram, a former professor at Bowie State College in Bowie, Maryland. “Too often people do great things and once they are gone there greatness leaves with them. Mr. Blair and his family has done something that will allow his accomplishment to survive him and them as well.”

Put the Guns Away Dr. William Blair

he recent shootings of a police officer in Arlington and the persistent shootings that take place in Dallas should demonstrate to all of us that our national gun policy is not working and that guns in this country are in the hands of the wrong people. The sad reality in our country is that any fool can get a gun. I have heard of cases of young men getting out of prison on Thursday and being fully armed by Friday. On Saturday they rob another bank. Recently, two promising Auburn University football players were shot and killed at a pool party. The young man who shot them has a history of gun violence. Yet, he, too, was able to have a gun and carry it around just as some of us carry our cell phones with us wherever we go. The National Rifle Association argues that people have a constitutional right to “bear arms.” I am not a Constitutional scholar but I beg to differ with that organization. I believe to differ with them. I believe that those who wrote the Constitution were speaking of the military whose role it was to protect the people and not every citizen. The National Rifle Association knows that too, but the issue for them is not gun safety. The issue for them is money. Each time a gun is sold in this country they earn a potential member. They couldn’t care less who gets killed in South Dallas, or whether or not a police officer in Arlington is shot while performing his duty to protect the public. The gun policy that we have now---- any fool can get one-----has made all of us prisoners in our own homes. We are frightened to walk down our streets. We are scared to death that the driver in the car next to us might pull out a hand gun if we say something about the erratic manner they were driving. We are afraid of sending our children to school because we do not know if they will come back to us in a body bag. Here’s another thing: The National Rifle Association spends more money buying politicians and their votes than any other lobby in the country. And believe you me that is one of the reasons that we do not have sensible gun policies. Ray Charles, bless his soul, could have seen that. As long as we allow guns to run rampant in this country, we will have senseless shootings, the morticians will stay busy and the gun sellers will continue to rejoice. It is about time that we put an end to the madness. If we don’t, the next gun that you see might be one that some robber is pointing in your face.

Take the sugar from our tables

ecently the city of New York decided to place limits on the amount of sugar that can go into drinks sold by outlets such as McDonalds and Burger King. The policy limits the size of drinks that can be sold by such concerns. Health officials in New York City issued the policy after deep concern about the linkages between sugar intake and such conditions as obesity and diabetes. Perhaps the city of Dallas should take a look at what officials in New York City have done. We have children in this city suffering from obesity as early as age 10. No doubt, they will become the diabetics of the future. And all of us know what that dreadful disease can lead to. Scientists have known for years that there is a direct link between what our bodies consume and what we become. Those who eat diets that consist largely of sugar and fat are more likely to become sick than those who eat diets that include vegetable and other nutrient based foods. We should cut back on the amount of sugar

and other friend foods that we feed our children in school. Many of these same children come from homes where most of the foods that they eat are prepared by fast food establishments. Our children are not receiving nutrients. They are receiving “junk foods.” Can you imagine what the body thinks knowing that we are placing “junk” in it? For years, scientists have told us that there is a direct relationship between what children eat and their ability to learn. Studies have shown that children who are breastfed have better cognition and do better in school than children who are fed formula. Yes, sugar diets are killing our children and causing diabetes in many adults and we have to do something to change that. To do nothing will result in a population that gets sicker and sicker. It is something that we cannot afford. Our healthcare costs continue to run rampant because we do not make the right decisions when our children are young. New York is on the right track. Decision makers in Dallas need to take notice. If we do nothing, our children will continue to suffer and all of us will continue to pay the price!

Dallas returns to Dallas

The television series Dallas has been revived and some of Dallas’ most prominent citizens were treated to a special screening of the legendary drama at the Winspear Opera House located in the AT&T Performing Arts Center in downtown Dallas on May 31. One of those in attendance was State Texas Representative Helen Giddings who helped to pass legislation in the Texas legislature that made financing available to the producers of the show, allowing them to film most of the show in Texas and hire Texas-based talent. “Through the Texas Film Commission the state of Texas has made funding available to the producers of the show,” said Rep. Giddings. “Years ago Dallas was one of television’s most popular television series. It brought tremendous attention to our city. I am thrilled that it is being revived. It made Dallas a household word around the world.” While Rep. Giddings applauds the new version of Dallas and what it will mean for the city, she continues to urge decision makers to make the show, and others like it, more racially and

culturally diverse. “Dallas and Texas have a history in which people of color and others who are different have played significant roles.”

She continued, “It is important to have film products that include the participation of people of color and others who have contributed to make Texas a desirable place to live. I will continue to pursue that objective as part of my duty as an elected official.” The reincarnation of the series features such stars as Larry Hagman, Linda Gray and Patrick Duffy. They make up the powerful Ewing family, with Hagman playing the sometimes villainous character, J.R. A new generation of Ewings is featured in the series, the show’s producers said. Evan Fitzmaurice, the director of the Texas Film Commission, said that the series received funding appropriated by the state legislature. “The state of Texas provided the producers with $2.1 million for 10 episodes of the series for season one. Those funds helped to pay the wages of Texans that appeared in the show,” he said. In addition to the Dallas showing, the series is scheduled to premiere June 13 in Washington, D.C. at Lounge 201, located within walking distance of historic Union Station. Selected guests from Texas and Washington have been invited to the showing.

Several years ago, my older brother decided that he didn’t like black women anymore, and that he would only date white women. As a black woman I took offense to this. He grouped us all into this one category of being angry, bitter and mean all because of the few he had been with. The few white women he has brought around, I did not like. They just had really nasty attitudes. They didn’t come around too much, so there was really a problem. He’s about to get married and so far, I haven’t met this woman. But is there something I can say to my brother to make sure that he’s not feeding her head with negative things about black women? That is really what I think gives them the nasty attitude. I would like to be able to get along with her since she will be part of my family. Not Usually Angry

i can understand your concern for your brother and his choices. However, i don’t see that part having much to do with you. As you welcome your new sister-in-law into the family, i advise you to see her simply as a women, and not an ethnic choice. if a nasty attitude should come up, then you can address that specifically with her. My advice would be to try to have a positive view and opinion of her and your brother’s relationship.

Without any warning or reasoning, thousands of lives were

taken. But the question that we as believers need to address today is: “What Do You Do When Trouble Comes?” In other words, how do you respond? How do you react? What exactly is the correct measure? What are the appropriate steps that must be taken if you are to make it through? When trouble comes? When trouble comes; you need to know how to deal with it, because in actuality, you don’t have a choice! Or but I believe that what the Lord was really trying to teach us is that we as Christians should all have Confidence In The Midst of A Crisis! Webster’s Dictionary defines the word crisis as; “a stage in a sequence of events at which the trend of all future events is determined.” In other words, a turning point! Our text here presents us with three fundamental issues that we need to consider if we are to survive during this time of trouble

and uncertainty. It lends to us, the advantage of how to overcome the adversary. It sheds light on what we need to do when trouble comes! If you want to make it through tough times. If you want to make it when trouble comes you must first remember that. What a profound statement this is in verse one God is our refuge God is In other words, God is a safe place, a safety zone, a shelter from danger. The old folks used to say; “He is a shelter in the time of storm.” I don’t know about you, but I have had some storms in my life. I have had some troubled times in this life. I have had some times where it seemed like I was not going to make it. Sometimes when I did not know whether I was coming or going. Sometimes when I did not know which way was up! But I am glad that I had a refuge I am glad that I had a place of shelter. For not only does the text inform us that He is our refuge, but Psalms 91 tells me that “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High, shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. For He is my refuge and my fortress. In Him will I trust?” What I am trying to say is that “I have got a secret place! I have got a shelter! And when things get bad, I can run to the secret

DALLAS – The perfect gift to end a 35th Season Anniversary came wrapped in a neat package for the Dallas Black Dance Theatre (DBDT) – an invitation to the 2012 Olympics. DBDT will represent the U.S. at the 2012 Cultural Olympiad in Edinburgh, Scotland. This most recent invitation is DBDT’s second invitation to perform at an Olympics. In 1996, DBDT was the first and only arts organization to be an official participant in a Cultural Olympiad and this year, it remains the only arts organization in Texas with such a distinction.

The London 2012 Cultural Olympiad is the largest cultural celebration in the history of the modern Olympic and Paralympics Movement held throughout the United Kingdom, spanning four years with more than 16 million people participating to date. The Olympic Festival includes musicals, operas, music, comedy, art exhibitions, and dance and features the best artists and performers from around the world. DBDT will present a total of 7 concert performances August 15-19 at the state of the art Venue 150 and will provide education and outreach

activities including master- classes and lecture demonstrations for local students and international festival attendees. Venue 150 is the center for the British Broadcasting Company (BBC) as well as the hub for the festival gala events. Dallas Black Dance Theatre’s invitation to the 2012 Olympic Festival also comes with a bonus: the opportunity to perform in New York City at Bryant Park on June 29th at a preview performance to showcase the American artists participating in the Cultural Olympiad. The Bryant Park showcase per-

formance is expected to draw an audience of 25,000+ that include the general public, local businesses and broadcast exposure reaching millions. “Dallas Black Dance Theatre is thrilled to once again serve as Cultural Ambassadors for the State of Texas and the nation,” said Ann Williams, Founder and Artistic Director. “Festival presenters saw us in New York and raved about our wonderful repertory, creative choreography and high quality dancers,” said Williams. From June 14-17, 2012 in Dallas, Family Feud and Think Like A Man’s Steve Harvey will host the 4th Annual Steve Harvey Mentoring Weekend for Young Men during Father’s Day Weekend. Created by the comedian, best-selling author, philanthropist and radio host to provide a one-of-a-kind, empowering experience for young men who are without fathers, Harvey will welcome over 100 teenage boys from the Dallas-area and around the country for a 4-day, 3-night transformative weekend on his country ranch. e have heard a lot about the "Big 3." Most of the time when you hear this term the sports commentator is referring to the players on the Miami Heat basketball team. The " Big 3" are players Dewayne Wade, Lebron James, and Chris Bosh. But on Saturday night, game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals, the Big 3 were jump shots made in the clutch. Chris Bosh made a clutch 3 pointer that sparked a late run, scoring from the 3 point line with 29 seconds left in the third quarter to tie the game at 73. The 3-point shot is a very unique tool used in the game of basketball. The 3 point shot allows you the opprotunity to elimanate a lead. The Heat made 9-26 from the 3point line and Boston made 6-19, Both teams shot the ball well, Miami just made more shots. But basketball is a make or miss game. The 3-point shot can help your team win and it can cause your team to lose. The 3- point rule was first tested at the collegiate level in a 1945 National

Collegiate Athletic Association game between Columbia and Fordham. Pro ball was the first to adopt the rule on a permanent basis. The American Basketball League did so in 1961. The Eastern Professional Basketball League followed in the 1963-64 season. The 3-point shot later became popular in the American Basketball Assocition after its introduction in the 1967-68 season. During the 1970s, the ABA used the 3- point shot along with the slam dunk, as a marketing tool to compete with the National Basketball Association. In 1979 the NBA adopted the 3-point shot. The Eastern Conference finals featured the best 3-point shooters in NBA history. Boston featured Ray Allen who is sure to be a Hall. - of - Famer and Paul Pierce (Hall-of-Famer) is one of the leagues top scores in NBA history. The Miami Heat featured Dewayne Wade who is very athletic, but when he gets hot can shoot the 3-ball really well. Labron James showed the world he can play all 5 position on the basketball court. James had 31 points and 12 rebounds and kept his team in the game the whole time, evening when they were

behind. Dewayne Wade had a 3-point play with 2:53 that put the heat up by 12. But it was the "Big 3" by Chris Bosh the broke the backs of the Celtics. Bosh was 3-4 from 3- point land and finished the night with 19 points. Bosh was not the only Heat player who put in some threes. Battier was 49, Challers was 1-3, and James was 15. The 3-point shots was good to the Maimi Heat in game 7, but the Championship will be played against the Oklahoma Thunder and Kevin Durante and Russell Westbrooks, so the Heat need that 3-point shooting to continue. The Thunder are younger and very talented. And Kevin D can shoot the 3ball from anywhere in the stadium The NBA Championship will be a great show of skill and great talent, so get ready to hear the term the "Big 3," only this time the commentator won't be talking about a player he will be talking about a play!!
