the First Lady’s ancestors Dr. william Blair

Elite News Founder

A new book written by a New York Times reporter reveals the racial history of the nation’s first lady, Michelle Obama. The book reveals that the First Lady has a number of white relatives. DNA tests revealed, according to the book, First Lady that a distant relative Michelle obama of the First Lady’s was fathered by the son of a slave owner, who was white. This is nothing new to those of us who are students of American history. Slave owners and their sons often slept with female slaves. Oftentimes they raped them and sometimes there were actually true feelings of attraction. There were even instances when white females had relationships with Black men. While in most communities it was against the law, interracial relationships have always been a common practice in the American fabric. If you look around the Black community and look at the various shades of color that exist you are quickly aware that racial socialization has taken place for a very, very long time. I have known Black people who could have passed for white and I have known Black people whose skin color was as dark as the night sky at midnight. Some of the white relatives of the First Lady have said that they hoped that they could visit the White House and visit their kin, the President and their children. One said that she hoped that the relationship that produced a child was a consensual relationship and not a rape. Another said that she had seen pictures of Mrs. Obama’s greatgreat grandfather, the child born from the relationship, and had noticed his dark skin. America must face the fact that is it quickly becoming a non-white nation. Fewer and fewer white people are having children while the Hispanic birth rate rises and the Black birth rate is steady. The changing realities of the nation’s complexion are frightening to some. But those of sober reflection understand that our future will be as great as our past. If we all dig deep enough we will find that there are people of all colors in our backgrounds. In fact, there are some that say that our current President is not the country’s first black President. It was Dr. King who said that the day was coming when people would be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I am still eagerly awaiting the dawning of that morning. June 22, 2012

Dallas is as white as ever!

The television series Dallas is back on the airwaves and like 20 years ago, people the world over will be watching to see the antics of J.R., Bobby Ewing and members of their family. The opening episodes of the series present a J.R. that is still a snake and a Bobby that you would not want to date your son or daughter. What concerns me and others about the new version of Dallas is the absence of people of color in the series. The first Dallas series had, at its best, black people as waiters and servants. It was disgraceful that the roles that Black people played in the oil and gas industry in Texas were never revealed in the series. It is hopeful that the new Dallas series will not present the same inaccurate picture. Texas state representative Helen Giddings is among those who are concerned that the new series should include more people of color. The state of Texas has given money to the series as has the city of Dallas. Representative Giddings said that the series should be more racially inclusive. Her position is held by many other elected officials and other leaders in the state of Dallas, particularly since taxpayer dollars are supporting the series.

Minister of the Week

Dallas was a very important ambassador for our city. It brought visitors and tourists from near and far. I have a friend who had two guests visit Texas from Uganda in east Africa. The very first place that they wanted to see was South Fork Ranch, he said. The Dallas series can still be a very important tool that gives people an understanding of how the energy business developed in our state. It is only fair that the portrayal include the entire story. People of varied ethnicities, and especially Black people, were important to the development of the industry. The contribution should be noted and included in the new episodes of Dallas. It is important to all of us.

Ask Dr. Hollie

Dear Dr. Hollie,

By Dr. Karen Hollie

I am a mother of three teenage boys, and for the most part, they are some good kids. However, this summer, my youngest, who is 15, has changed quite drastically. He’s been leaving the house in the morning and not coming home until late at night. I ask him where he’s been and he just says he’s been with some friends. I try to restrict him from going out, but once his dad and I are at work, he does what he wants to do. He doesn’t listen and he won’t talk. Everything becomes an argument with him. My husband wants him out the house, but that is way too hard for me. I’ve been a go-between, trying to keep him under my roof. A few days ago, I was asking him if he wanted to talk about anything. He got so angry at me that he got so close to my face that our noses were almost touching. I was really scared. My husband was not home, and he doesn’t know about the incident. I am a little afraid of what my son may do, and I still don’t know what has gotten into him. I know that when I tell my husband about our little incident, there will be no way my son can remain in my home, but he is still my baby and I don’t want to just throw him out. Please tell me what I can do. At a Loss

Dear At a Loss,

You have made a few serious mistakes:

1. Allowing your son to disrespect your home by not enforcing a curfew 2. Keeping his behavior a secret from your husband 3. thinking your son is a baby what you need to do is go “old school” and set some rules and make him suffer whatever the consequences. Dr. Hollie is a Pastor and practicing psychotherapist in the city. For questions and comments, please write to askdrhollie@aol.com.

My Dad is the Greatest

Psalms 128 1Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in his ways. 2You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours. 3Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your sons will be like olive shoots round your table.4thus is the man blessed who fears the Lord.5May the Lord bless you from Zion all the days of your life; may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem,6and may you live to see your children's children. Peace be upon israel.”

As a kid I got in trouble when the teacher called my parents to let them know what they heard me telling another boy: "My dad could beat up your dad!" I did not understand the big deal. I mean, it was true, he could. Were they gonna make him prove it or something? Well, many of us believed our dad was the greatest and we cannot all be right. But it is a special relationship, father son, or father. A young couple took their two-year-old daughter to the home-improvement store. She got tired of walking, so the husband let her ride on his shoulders. As he walked, she began pulling his hair. Although he asked her to stop several times, she kept on. Getting annoyed, he scolded, "Madi-

son! Stop that!" "But, Daddy," she replied, "I am just trying to get my gum back! "God has ordained 3 great institutions here on this earth: The home, the government, the church. The oldest, and greatest of these institutions is the home. The church is a great institution, but is only as great as its homes. Our nation is great, though it has been far greater, but it is only as great as its churches. "As the home goes, so goes the church, as the church goes, so goes the nation." Amen! Through the years, much of the burden of having the right kind of home has been placed on "mother." But the Bible places most of the burden squarely in the lap of "Dad." It is Dad’s responsibility to set the moral and spiritual example for the home/to see to it that the Word of God is honored and revered/take lead in matters of discipline/make sure children are raised in nurture and admo-

nition of the Lord in church faithfully greatly increasing their chances of being born again just as soon as they reach the age of accountability for them. Thank God for Christian mothers, some of which have many of these responsibilities fall to them, but remember, dad will answer to God for it! It was Joshua who said, "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." He was the leader of the band. Eve may have taken that first bite, but God came looking for Adam! We live in a day in which it is very difficult to be a good man. It is even more difficult to be a good husband. But it is most difficult to be a good dad. The world has a warped concept of what it means to be a good dad. Just turn on the TV and you will know it is true. Have you noticed that the dad of most TV households is made out to be a buffoon and an idiot? Amen! So, men, who can we pattern ourselves after if not Archie Bunker, Homer Simpson, or Ray Romano? Well, our standard should be the Word of God and Psalms 128 gives us some tremendous concepts on how to be a good dad, and how a family can best support dad. "Blessed" means to be congratulated. If you do the things in the following verses, you should

Prayer Closet By Rev. Clarence Henderson

A day without prayer is a day without blessings, and a life without prayer is a life without power. An hour spent with God is worth a lifetime spent with man. Faith becomes all-power when faith is on it’s knees in prayer. Many people believe in the power of prayer, and love to hear about it, but few pray. Daniel would rather spend a night with lions than miss a day of prayer. Peter found it was easier to get out of jail than to get into a prayer meeting. While the believers were praying for Peter’s safety, he was released by God. Peter came to the house where they were praying. The saint saw him at the door and left him standing there because it was too good to be true. www.dfwelitenews.com

be commended, congratulated. In the original language it’s plural. It actually says it twice! Blessed, blessed is the man! That is double joy! But if you do not do what this Psalm says, it will be double trouble! So, if you want double joy, if you want to be the best dad you can be, if you want to be the leader of the band as you are called to be, then tune in to channel 128 this week to see the dad that God built:

1. Character First and foremost, a good dad will fear God and walk in oldfashioned character and integrity. What will your kids remember about you when you have left this life? What do some of you remember about your dad? I wonder what my kids will remember about me. Will they remember the things I bought them? What did your dad buy you on your 12th birthday? Do not remember do you? No, they will remember your character, whether good or bad. Allow me to read a letter now that I wrote to my dad, and sent to mom to hold and read there on Father’s Day. Welcome to the weekend, Baaaby! Ya know, Juneteenth almost snuck by me last weekend. Celebrating Father's Day(Wow!), my daughters 21st Birthday (Double Wow!)and vacation planning grabbed most of my attention. We were at church and somebody mentioned Juneteenth. I got home an checked the Internet, seeing all kinds of local celebrations and articles mentioning "our" holiday. Usually, I would have heard it on the radio, but with the advent of Pandora, Ipods, XM-Sirius and such. I have less patience for 5 minutes of commercial listening built in at least twice an hour on local Radio, thus I missed what was happening from my normal source. Perhaps if I was still ordering The Dallas Morning News or Ft. Worth Star Telegram, I would have been alerted. Both newspaper and radio interaction seems to be moving towards the net. The net was built for newspapers and I have no solution to keep paper copies relevant for a new generation of readers. It's so cool when my friends and relatives from around the world reach out to me about something I've written and De De McGuire they've read at www.dfwelitenews.com. You can always email me at Smokinkevan@verizon.net. As for Radio, here are my suggestions to make you relevant for current and future generations. You have to provide more music and personality!

Local recruit on road to Kansas

C E L E B R A t i N G

By Joseph Green-Bishop Elite News Staffwriter

In a few weeks Jordan Giddings, who has been one of the Dallas area’s premier high school basketball stars for the past four years, will journey to Kansas where he earned a fouryear athletic scholarship because of the skills that he displayed as a high school standout and his conduct off the court. A number of schools across the country pursued Jordan, who starred at Carter and Adamson High Schools. He said he chose the school in Kansas because of the relationship that the coach developed with him, and the academic programs that the institution offers. “While I want to play professional basketball, my long-range goals are to become a sports journalist or to pursue a career in sports management,” said Jordan, who credits his parents, Shonda and Stan, members of his family and his church with helping him to mold his life. “My parents always took me to church. My favorite scripture became you can do all things

through Christ who strengthens you,” said Jordan, who was raised spiritually in the Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship Church. “While growing up I managed to stay away from the temptations of the streets. I did not have time to waste my life.” Jordan, 18, will be attending Southwest University in Winfield, Kansas. The school listed him as their primary basketball recruit. “Jordan wanted to attend a four year school,” said his father, who coaches women’s basketball at Southwest Christian College in Terrell, Texas, which also bidded for his son’s talents for the men’s program. “He has basketball skills and he has an interest in journalism,” Giddings said. “I want him to use his passions and his talents to be a citizen that makes a contribution to society. It is now time for him to travel the paths that he wants to pursue.” Jordan said that he wanted his life and his most recent accomplishment to be an example for other young people. “My message to other young people is to pursue your dreams and understand that

dreams can come true. I want them to understand that they must begin to think about what they should do with their lives.” Numerous people, he said, including his great-grandmother, Catherine Ferguson and his grandmother, state Representative Helen Giddings (D-Dallas), have played monumental roles in his life. “Both of them have given me

An older brother, Marcus, has given Jordan valuable advice about how to be successful in college. “He told me to pursue my studies and to always spend time in the gym,” Jordan said. “Marcus has encouraged me to keep a ball in my hands and to do the very best that I can.” And Jordan gets nothing but praise from his coaches. “Jordan is a very solid kid who played a leadership role on our team at Carter, said assistant basketball coach Brian Jordan. “He will be a fantastic college basketball player and a great student. We are very proud of him.” The coach said that Jordan was an example for younger players and was a good student in the classroom. “He never presented his coaches or his teachers with any problems,” he said. “I want to return to Dallas after I complete my education,” said Jordan. “I want to spend some time with my family and my friends before I go to see the rest of the world,” he said.

The attendance for conferences has dwindled significantly over the years. The fundamental cause for the decrease in attendance is unknown but some business owners report these events yield little to no return on their time invested or the costs are prohibitive. Procurement conferences are hosted by third-parties and government agencies to serve as a catalyst for economic development – a means for connecting contract decision-makers with vendors. There was a time when Bishop Jakes and First Lady Serita Jakes did not have enough money to feed themselves and their small children. Thirty years ago, the Bishop’s ministry was in its infancy in West Virginia, yet his faith was as high as the tallest peak in The Blue Ridge Mountains. There were days when he was unable to pay the meager rent on his church yet he preserved, not seeking greatness but searching for grace. Preaching for the first time as a boy he did not intend to reach the rich and the famous with his messages. That was not his dream. In his heart he was comfortable with those who pulled coal from the hillsides and who drove nearly broken cars and trucks to their places of employment, if they were fortunate enough to work at all. Yet, God had a larger plan for the gifted young preacher who as a small boy was known as T.D., a plan that would one day make him the most engaging and significant clergyman on the face of the earth. It was a plan that would one day make him a frequent guest in the White House where he counseled presidents, and one that took him to principalities where he prayed for royalty. And befittingly, on June 8th in downtown Dallas in the splendidness of the AT&T Performing Arts Center/Winspear Opera House, thousands came out to honor Bishop Jakes for giving thirty-five years of his

Dick Gregory shares a message with Dr. Martin Luther KIng, Jr.

This year friends will pay tribute to an icon, Mr. Dick Gregory, as he celebrates his 80th birthday. For decades Mr. Gregory has been on the forefront, as an entertainer, activist, speaker, actor, author, health nutritionist and social commentator. In addition to turning 80 this year, Mr. Gregory has been married to Lillian Smith Gregory for the past 53 years and they have 10 children. A regular providing social and political commentary on television and radio shows, Mr. Gregory was heavily involved in the civil rights movement, with other activists and members of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Era; today he continues to be a "drum major for justice and equality." He has been a candidate for president of the United States and he has marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., in addition to enjoying relationships with some of the most powerful and influential men and women in the world. Mr. Gregory’s social satire changed the way white Americans perceived African American comedians since he first performed in public. Mr. Gregory entered the national comedy scene in 1961 when Chicago's Playboy Club (as a direct request from publisher Hugh Hefner) booked him as a replacement for white comedian, 'Professor' Irwin Corey. Mr. Gregory's activism continued

into the 21st Century. In response to published allegations that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had supplied cocaine to predominantly African American areas in Los Angeles, thus spurring the crack epidemic, Gregory protested at CIA headquarters and was arrested. In 1992 he began a program called "Campaign for Human Dignity" to fight crime in St. Louis neighborhoods. In 1973, the year he released his comedy album Caught in the Act, Mr. Gregory moved with his family to Plymouth, Massachusetts, where he developed an interest in vegetarianism and became a nutritional consultant. In 1984 he founded Health Enterprises, Inc., a company that distributed weight loss products. In 1987 Mr. Gregory introduced the Slim-Safe Bahamian Diet, a powdered diet mix, which was immensely profitable. Mr. Gregory is in high demand as a speaker and is considered an expert on health issues. On June 29, 2012 at 7:00p.m. at Harwood 609 Restaurant, Mr. Gregory, who has been a regular at the annual Don’t Believe the Hype Celebrity Weekend for the past 17 years, will be saluted at a dinner and show. On many other occasions Mr. Gregory has traveled to the Metroplex to support organizations and programs. The birthday celebration is an opportunity to show him some love.
