fter many years of thought I have decided to write my memoirs. The book will be a oneyear project and I hope that many of you will be at the book signing which will take place in July of next year. The book will start with my early life, my time in the army, my years in the Negro baseball League and the history of the Elite Newspaper. Given the number of years that I have been around the book will give readers history about Dallas and the country that they know nothing about. It will be hard hitting, but it will be truthful. For years, people have been telling me that I should write a book. With the recent decision by the University of Texas at Arlington to archive my work product and papers it became clear to me that I had a duty to share with people the things that I have seen, the people I have talked to, the power brokers who I have influenced and the members of the clergy who I have worked with and prayed with. I have selected one of the country’s finest writers to assist me with the project. There is very little that I am not going to tell him and it will be his task to present it in a fashion that will engage writers. I realize that I am not a great writer, but I have one hell of a story to tell. When I first went into the publishing business I stood with men like the late Pastor S.M. Wright. I walked with him and prayed with him and cried with him. I watched him as he interacted with some of the most powerful people in this country. When Lyndon Johnson was President, S.M. had a direct telephone line into the White House, allowing him to reach the President at any time during the day or night. In the book I plan to write things that I have never shared with many people before. I will tell some secrets but not all of them. It will not be an angry book. It will be a book that, I believe, will help our society move forward, which is something that has always been of interest to me. I will share some personal aspects of my life that I have not shared before. I want generations to come to know the real Bill Blair and that is what my book will do. During the course of the coming year I will share some excerpts from the book in the pages of the Elite News. But you will have to purchase the book to get the entire story. The book is going to make its readers laugh, it will make its readers cry, it will make its ready angry and it will give its readers hope for the future. So get ready. My book is on its way. obama is the President of All!

The Supreme Court earlier this week sided with the Obama deciding that the federal government and not the states should decide immigration laws. It is a victory for the administration and for Mr. Obama himself. Ever since 2008 when the Obama family moved into the White House, some people in our society have treated the office of the Presidency with contempt and outright disrespect. It was not too long ago when a member of the Congress shouted out that the president was lying during his State of the Union address. The governor of one of our western states, who had a disagreement with the President shouted at him and waived her finger in his face like he was a school child. I do not recall another President having had a finger waived in his face. The disrespect of our president has to stop and it has to stop now. President Obama’s Republican challenger spoke before a gathering of Hispanic leaders recently in Florida and attempted to persuade them to back him in November rather than the President. Most of the leaders sat on their hands and gave only polite applause. Later in the week President Obama appeared before the same group and outlined

wORDS OF wiSDOM

"One of the tests of leadership is the ability to recognize a problem before it becomes an emergency."

Minister of the Week

what his administration had done to benefit the Hispanic community. The Hispanic audience was wild with applause. President Obama was the first president to appoint a person of Hispanic heritage to the United States President Barack obama Supreme Court and most recently he issued an executive order that would preclude the federal government from arresting Hispanic teenagers and sending them back to the countries where their parents had been born, even though they, themselves, were born in the United States. The Hispanic leaders know that President Obama and his administration have been on their side and they trust him. They do not trust Romney because he has sided with the right wing of the Republican Party on the issue of administration who has been hostile to Hispanics on the issue of immigration.

Much Moore - Grooming the Good

The volumes of women who walk into Michael Moore’s place of business, Much Moore Salon & Boutique on Red Bird Lane in Dallas, know that they are entering the domain of a creative genius whose work is shared and admired by some of the country’s leading politicians and business owners. What some of them may not know when they first encounter him is that Moore’s spiritual roots date back to the days when his grandmother, Cora Gibson, who raised him until he was six years old, would pray nearly an hour before allowing Moore to eat a meal. “She taught me about the spiritual side of life,” said Moore, the father of four sons, who has been in business for more than twenty years. “I learned so many things from her that are still present in my life and my business,” he said. Life has not been without its difficulties for Moore. A graduate of Carter High School, he studied at East Texas State where he made money as a hair stylist, working out of his door room. In 1982, he was told by doctors that he had a fatal disease and he decided to live his remaining years in the fast lanes of life. “Before long I found myself doing drugs, and that led to a ten month stay in federal prison. “While incarcerated I was tested and they told

Michael Moore with media mogul oprah Winfrey

me that could not find any trace of the disease that I had been diagnosed with,” he said. “I knew that god had healed me,” said Moore who continued his hair styling skills while incarcerated. Back in Dallas, Moore, free of drugs, returned to his trade. Quickly word spread that he was a superior talent, not only in the hair business but in the make-up arena as well. “He is one of the best talents that I know,” said state Rep. Helen Giddings who has been one of Moore’s clients for 20 years. “He could turn a frog into a princess.” A number of years ago Moore started a Bible

Study at his saloon. “We have had as many as eighty men attend our 5 a.m. service,” said Moore who is also the personal stylist and make-up artist for Pastor T.D. Jakes. “My customers are also my friends,” said Moore who has a second salon location in Desoto. “I do their hair but I also let God use me when they are in my chair. We pray together, we cry together. People do not need judgment. They need validation,” said Moore who often visits his mother, Melba, who lives in Arlington with one of his three sisters. “I am humbled by what God has allowed me to do with my life,” he said. Last year Moore traveled to South Africa where he entertained doing business. “You plant seeds with your life in one part of the world and God allows those seeds to blossom in another part of the world,” he said. “I have my skills but God is in everything that I do. I am full of love and I love everyone,” he said. “I am training my four sons to be responsible individuals,” he said. “I want them to have purpose in life. I want them to leave the world a little bit better than they found it. I did not have a father present when I was growing up, but I am there for my children. God wants it that way.”

Ask Dr. Hollie

Dear Dr. Hollie,

By Dr. Karen Hollie

My husband just dropped a bombshell!! He just told me that he has a child I never knew about. The child is 8 years old. The problem with that is that we’ve been married for 10 years. I am devastated and I’m not sure I can ever forgive him. To make matters worse, he wants to get to know the child and this means bringing him to my home. We’ve never been able to have children and this only adds to my sense of failure. I love my husband but I’m not sure I can get through this. Should I give him an ultimatum of the child or me? Please help. Shell Shocked

Dear Shell Shocked,

this can be a win/win for you; it depends on how you see it. You say you love your husband and you’ve been married for 10 years, i think that’s worth saving. it will require your ability to forgive and accept this child. i know that’s easier said than done. You could see this as God answering your prayer of a child in your home. there’s no ultimatum to give him because he’s decided that the child will be a part of his life. Now you decide, will you?

Dr. Hollie is a Pastor and practicing psychotherapist in the city. For questions and comments, please write to askdrhollie@aol.com.

efore we get started this week I want to have a few comments. Why is it that many of us are into “approval addiction? Some of us need a lot of approval, whereas others needs less. But we all need it. Why? The answer is simple: life is rough, and it tears away at our self-esteem. People, circumstances, our failures and inabilities, our sin nature, and the devil all accuse us of missing the mark, of being less than we should be. In some ways, this is true. Missing the moral mark is one definition of sin. But there is nothing sinful about losing at chess, not getting that promotion, or being less than athletic. No, life is filled with discouragements. There is an old story about a pastor leaving a church. At his farewell dinner, he tried to encourage one of the pillar members, “Don’t be so sad. The next pastor might be better than me.” She replied, “That is what they said last time, but it keeps getting worse.” The world will look down upon us because of our Christian values and beliefs; we will be labeled narrow, escapist, non-intellectual, judgmental, and out of touch with reality just for following the Scriptures. But Christian families and churches need to be sources of encouragement, not discouragement, except when the shoe fits and we have to wear it. For example, when

t H E

C H U R C H

Cain offered an inappropriate sacrifice to God, God confronted Him with the problem; this discouraged Cain, but it needed to be done. Encouragement is artificial if it is not valid and sincere. We are dealing with persons, not projects. Encouragements when possible, but not at the expense of truth. As long as the church of Jesus Christ has the potential to improve, we need to be serious about encouraging others. Encouragement is crucial to edify and nurture others. The other word for encouragement means to strengthen. Deuteronomy 1:38 says, “But your assistant, Joshua son of Nun, will enter it. Encourage him, because he will lead Israel to inherit it.” Amen! Deuteronomy 3:28 says “But commission Joshua, and encourage and strengthen him, for he will lead this people across and will cause them to inherit the land that you will see." Amen! Part of Leadership training is filling the “encouragement tank”

A N D

of future leaders… 2nd Samuel 11:25 says, “David told the messenger, ‘Say this to Joab: ’Do not let this upset you; the sword devours one as well as another. Press the attack against the city and destroy it.’ Say this to encourage Joab.’" Amen! Isaiah 41:7 says, “The craftsman encourages the goldsmith, and he who smoothes with the hammer spurs on him who strikes the anvil. He says of the welding, ‘It is good.’" 2nd Chronicles 30:22 says, “Hezekiah spoke encouragingly to all the Levites, who showed good understanding of the service of the Lord. For the seven days they ate their assigned portion and offered fellowship offerings and praised the Lord, the God of their fathers.” Amen! 2nd Chronicles 32:6-7, “He appointed military officers over the people and assembled them before him in the square at the city gate and encouraged them with these words: ‘Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater power with us than with him.” Encouragement acknowledges the fears that people have as real, and emboldens them despite those fears. 1st Thessalonians 5:11-14, “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. Now we ask

Join Dick Gregory, Cheryl Smith, Richard Gant, KiKi Shepard, Joe torry, Stank E., iMAJ, ivan tolbert, D. Elli$, Efrem Zemill, and the tuskegee Airmen, for a Don’t Believe the Hype weekend! www.DONtBELiEVEtHEHYPE.ORG

Prayer Closet By Rev. Clarence Henderson

There is another definition of prayer, which I would like to support and share with you. “Prayer is admitting our helplessness and that of others to a loving Father who knows, understands, cares and answers.” Prayer is the breathing and longing of the spirit after God. Phillip Brooks said, “Prayer is not conquering God’s reluctance, but taking hold of God’s willingness.” In all true prayer, God the Holy Spirit cries out from within us to God the Father in the powerful name of Jesus Christ. When we meet the simple conditions of prayer given to us in the word of God, we receive mercy and grace. And these come from the very throne of grace where one is seated who loved us and can abundantly satisfy us. www.dfwelitenews.com

you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, and be patient with everyone.” Amen! Notice the intentionality of encouraging words. If we are to accept that encouraging others is crucial toward developing God’s Kingdom, then how do we do it? We can encourage people by developing encouraging habits. Begin with the people you know best: family and close friends. The principle of 1st Timothy 5:8; “If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. There is nothing masculine about being negative.” Amen! Do not make your life’s mission to keep other people humble by being critical or withholding compliments people with good self-esteem usually are humble. If you compliment only perfection, you have problems. There are many ways to divide people; one division is between those who withhold nurturing words and those who encourage and reward sincere effort. elcome to the weekend, baby! I'm writing this column from the beach in Jamaica.... After spending a night at the home of one of our Irving Texas church members in Montego Bay(He spend 2 months here each Summer) and rocking the overated "Hip Strip" and the under rated party at "Pier One," we've headed to Negril. Negril is known as the "Capitol of Casual" and the place where "Stella got her

groove back!" Yes there are plenty of grooves to be found in this port city on Jamaica's west coast, lol! Usually we ride one of the Tourwise or Juta Company buses for the 90 minute trip from Mo'Bay to Negril, but this time decided to have private tarnsfer. That means a vehicle with only the driver, my wife and I. We chose JoeCool Taxi, (www.joecooltaxiandtoursjamaica.com) an up and coming, highly rated service and got a great deal! We paid $100.00 U.S. for both us to be picked up in Montego Bay, transported to our resort and returned to the airport for our flight home. The cool thing about a private transport is you get to stop at

Our first four days are at Rooms on The Beach, Negril (http://www.roomsresorts.com/negril.asp.) This is my fifth stay and my wife's 4th at "Rooms". It's right in the heart of 7 Mile Beach at the 2k marker on the www.Negrilinfo.com map! The skys are clear, the palm trees sway,

the beach's white sand is pristine and ohhhhh the warm, caresssing, gentle waters of the Carribbean Sea are a 60-second walk from our room! We plan on hitting spots like the Jungle Nightclub for Ladies night, Bourbon Beach for the best Jerk Chicken in the city, the Canoe Bar for the coconut shrimp, Connies Country Western Pub, Roots Bamboo and other night/day spots, lol...Lest you think Negril is all beach, partying and eating, there's so much more to the area... Stylist plans on turning Brand into international Success C E L E B R A t i N G

Ana Maria Thomas knows how to invade a market and imprint a fresh new brand. At the age of 24, the accomplished hair stylist's ravishing and show-stopping looks have appeared in Elle Magazine, Essence Magazine and are monthly fixtures in Sophisticate's Black Hair. But coiffing the world's most beautiful celebrities is not the only mission in this young Dallasite's agenda. The stylist is headed toward "mogul" status with several plans of action in progress. So pay attention and don't miss out! Ana Maria Thomas was raised into Dallas hair care royalty. The Flewellen family and styling brand has been around for over 50 years and catapulted the careers of many stylists across Texas. Following behind her grandmother (Mary Flewellen,) and her aunts and uncles, she learned at a young age what it took to run and maintain a successful brand. At age 18, she already had her cosmetology license and her own clientele in the flagship Flewellen salon, located on Lancaster Rd in the Oak Cliff community. (At the time, the family was the only black salon franchise with three locations.) "I joined my aunt Kaye in her salon as an assistant one summer, and fell in love with the industry. I loved everything about styling hair, and the salon feel," admits Thomas. "Both sides of my family planted entrepreneurial seeds. To be so young and own a pre-

miere salon in central Dallas is a result of positive business influences in my life," she adds. Before graduating from the University of Texas at Austin, Thomas perfected her skills and training while working at the campus salon and then on to the Hair Clinic, for several years. By age 21, her clients varied from college students to business executives. Little did her co-workers know that she had such huge aspirations for her career. Thomas always knew that she initially wanted to open her own salon. After interning with top celebrity styling agent Crystal Wright, she solidified her goals and knew that she wanted a brand that would one day be worldwide. Soon she started her plans of providing

women of all ethnicities with top quality virgin hair extensions. "I not only wanted to provide women with un-processed extensions, but also make it easily available to those who suffer hair loss for various reasons," she says. In May, Thomas opened The Beauty Shop, a full service boutique overlooking Commerce Street, (Downtown Dallas' most burgeoning marketplace) across from the Neiman Marcus flagship. The salon name is reminiscent of the hospitality and warmth of a neighborhood establishment, yet The Beauty Shop is far from your average salon. Providing full hair, makeup and lash services, this uber style forward salon specializes in long-term hair growth, weaving, coloring and natural hair management. Ana Maria Thomas and her team of stylists invite you to The Beauty Shop Grand Opening Mixer and Launch Party on June 30. The private event will include the unveiling of The Beauty Shop Hair Extension Collection and storefront, on-site styling demonstrations, as well as delicacies, libations and music from DJ Phife. To RSVP, send emails to info@thebeautyshopdallas.com. Visit The Beauty Shop Dallas at www.TheBeautyShopDallas.com or on Facebook at TheBeautyShopDallas. Follow C. The salute took place on June 21st and 22nd in San Diego and was attended by Johnson, a former catcher in the league and eight others outstanding Black baseball greats, said Elite News founder William “Bill” Blair and eight other standout from the league. Hosted by Dave Winfield, a former standout in major league baseball, who is now a vice president with the Padres, the event was held at the exclusive Omni Hotel Gallery in downtown San Diego. Flown in from various parts of the country, the nine players and their guests were greeted at the San Diego airport by a chauffeured driven limousine. “Each of the players was very grateful that the Padres continue to recognize the contributions that w made to the country’s most watched sport,” said Blair, who was a pitcher for the Indianapppolis Clowns where Johnson was often his catcher. “I had not seen some of my former colleagues in fifteen years,” said Blair. “I am going to return to San Diego next year where they have asked me to throw out the first ball to start one of their games. “Negro Baseball was very important to the life of this country. Bob Motley, who was an umpire in the league, was also among those honored. A very special guest, Cam Perron, a 17-year-old youth from Birmingham, Alabama was cited for his attempts to get a pension for members of the Negro Baseball League who currently receive no compensation for the many years that they contributed to the sport.

The guest speaker for the event was Bob Kendrick, the president of the Negro Baseball League located in Kansas City, Missouri. During the event the players exchanged stories and recalled memories of those they played with who had passed. “I sat and listened to the players express their thoughts and experiences and I was on the edge of my seat the entire event,” said Elite News publisher Debra Blair Abron accompanied her father to the event. “While they are up in age their minds are young and some of them moved like they were still on the baseball field,” she said.

Supreme Court Rules on Health Care Reform Law; Questions Remain

Austin, Texas (June 28, 2012) After two years of intense debate about the constitutionality of the health care reform law known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the U.S. Supreme Court today upheld the individual mandate to purchase insurance or pay a tax. The decision benchmarks a significant milestone taken to improve access to affordable health care, but uncertainty remains around how the state will address the expansion of Medicaid. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Medicaid expansion is constitutional; however, states will not lose their current Medicaid funding if they choose not to expand. While PPACA will certainly help reduce Texas large uninsured population, almost half were expected to become enrolled in the Medicaid program. Earlier estimates were that 4.1 million Texans would become insured because of PPACA, but that number could drastically fall if Texas chooses not to expand Medicaid and low income individuals cannot afford to buy private insurance. Under PPACA, the federal government will pay 100 percent of

Page Page10 10

President of the USA Barack obama

the costs for those who are newly eligible for Medicaid for 2014 through 2016. In 2017, the federal share begins decreasing but never falls below 90 percent. More than $112 billion in federal funds could be available to Texas over the next 10 years for the newly eligible. Texas hospitals recognize there are concerns with expanding the Medicaid population, but given the states high number of uninsured, all options for gaining insurance coverage must be closely considered. Under PPACA, a significant number of low income individuals could gain insurance without any cost to the state of Texas for several years. Without the Medicaid expansion, many will

remain uninsured, shifting costs to the insured and increasing uncompensated care to health care providers said Dan Stultz, M.D., FACP, FACHE, THA president/chief executive officer. The law was never meant to fix all the problems facing the health care system Stultz said. Texas hospitals look forward to a continued discussion on how to improve the effects of the law for patients, families and communities. About the Texas Hospital Association Founded in 1930, the Texas Hospital Association is the leadership organization and principal advocate for the states hospitals and health care systems. Based in Austin, THA enhances its members abilities to improve accessibility, quality and cost-effectiveness of health care for all Texans. One of the largest hospital associations in the country, THA represents more than 85 percent of the states acute-care hospitals and health care systems, which employ some 369,000 health care professionals statewide. Health Care Bill Constitutional

By Joseph Green-Bishop Elite News Staffwriter

On Thursday morning the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the historic health care legislation passed by a democratic Congress and signed by President Barack Obama was constitutional. The ruling came as a surprise to many who thought that the legislation was doomed to failure in the Conservative dominated court. The biggest surprise was that the Court’s Chief Justice, John Roberts voted to in favor of the legislation which has been called Obama care.

The ruling by the Court means that law will go forward. Among other things it allows people with pre-existing conditions to get insurance and gives young people the opportunity to stay on the insurance policies of their parents until they are able to afford their own. The decision gives President Obama a decided advantage during the election season. His opponent, Mitt Romney, has opposed the bill and said that he would abolish the bill if he was elected President.

Hat-- a shaped covering for the head, usually with a crown and brim, especially for wear outdoors. Attitude-- manner, disposition, feeling, position, etc., with regard to a person or thing; tendency or orientation, especially of the mind: The merging of these two words gives you Hattitude, the true meaning and importance of wearing hats, not just for fashion, but a woman giving honor to God when she is worshiping the Lord in the sanctuary when she prays. The covering of the head is not just fashionable but Biblical as well according to Corinthians 11:5-- And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head--it is just as though her head were shaved. The Inaugural Hattitude luncheon held on Saturday June 23, 2012, at the Elite News Beckwith Blair Chapel was a great success! This wonderful event is the brainchild of Fallon Blair Turner, daughter of Elite News Editor-in-Chief, Darryl E. Blair Sr. Wearing an array of beautiful hats woman of all ages were in attendance. These women laughed, ate, and were entertained as they learned the true meaning of Hattitude! They also participated in a raffle and the "Parade of Hats". To be a part of this wonderful event truly humbled me. I was honored to in the presence of woman who put aside age difference and status to come together to love, laugh, and learn something new that will help to educate woman not just in fashion, but in praise as well. Anytime we as woman can come together in this manner, not only blesses us as woman, but praises and gives God his glory at the same time. This wonderful event could not have taken place without The Elite News staff, Mistress of Ceremony Katie Woods, guest speaker Dr. Helena Mosley, the performance by Kayah Franklin with the Dallas Black Dance Theater, narration of the dance by Fran Anderson, Erica Westbrook, Songstress Annette Cullors, Prayer Warrior Mary Margaret Crosby, Lady Westbrook Catering, Decorations by Bridgette Hughes & Company, Tyler Gerard Videographer, Delaughter's Photography, technical support by Casey Blair of Shotz Magazine, Lifeway Church Praise Dancers, and vendors Debra A. Wanda Bolton-Davis is the wife of the pastor at the St. John Church. The Illinois native and mother of three also serves as a teaching pastor and ministry director at the church. When Rev. Wanda first moved to the Dallas area in 1983, she aided her husband in the work of the church by serving as Minister of Music, starting the Social Service Ministry and founding the Annual Women’s Retreat. This was all while working as a social worker in the field of adoption. Rev. Wanda has a heart for God and His people and possesses a strong passion for discipleship. This passion led her to write and self-publish a discipleship guide called, “Victorious Disciples.” The release of the book also served as

A legend went home to glory June 20, 2012, after a long illness. Dr. James O. Gray was an accomplished Musician, Educator and Administrator. His last church membership affiliation was with the North Dallas Community Bible Fellowship in Richardson, Texas. He attended public schools in San Francisco, California. He then relocated to Texas, spending his junior and senior high school years at Lincoln High School in Dallas, Texas. He was the kind of man who believed in getting the job done with excellence. He was loving, caring and understanding of others, and he gave his staff members and students a fair and impartial opportunity. He was approachable and encouraged cohesiveness among his team of educators. He believed in the phrase, “we can do it” and worked hard to promote this concept to help others succeed. Dr. Gray successfully started his career at W. D. Spigner High School in Calvert, Texas and Burnett High School of Terrell, Texas. As Director of Bands, he orchestrated marching bands, concert bands and jazz bands. Booker T. Washington Technical High School and South Oak Cliff High School Marching Bands, Dallas, Texas, reached stardom under his leadership. These marching bands’ performances were of star quality and were well respected and recognized within and outside of the state of Texas. After his reign as Director of Bands he became interested in administration, accepting a position as Assistant Principal at Clara Oliver Elementary School, and shortly afterwards as the Assistant Principal for Instruction at T.W. Browne Jr. High School. He was appointed assistant director/principal of the Arts Magnet High School at Booker T. Washington in 1976 when the school reopened as a magnet school.
