Dear Dr. Hollie, I have been best friends with the same person since junior high school. We are now in our forties. We have gone through so much together as I’m sure you can imagine. to me! And not one piece of it is cheap! Now, I have already filed a police report, do I wait to see if they will get him, though I don’t believe they will, or do I turn him in myself? Or do I take a whole different approach, and go to my friend and tell her the whole thing, knowing this will end our friendship because she will finally have to see her son for who he is, I have receipts, and that will make her angrier at me than him. I don’t want to hurt her, but he can’t keep doing what he wants. Regretful Dear Regretful, You must operate in love and authenticity by telling your friend this disappointing news and supporting it with receipts. Others find prayer a hopeless endeavor and unconsciously abandon it for an almost prayer less existence. They become hard hearted and develop an inner deadness which only some terrible trouble can break. Ask them whether they believe in prayer and in a prayer hearing and a prayer answering God and they will say “YES, but it’s a lifeless, meaningless affirmation. The primary reason for this kind of prayer life is that people suffer from a divided allegiance. We must be committed to our prayer life.

JANUARY 11, 2013

A glow with opportunities is this new year 1”Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,2through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.3Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;4perseverance, character; and character, hope.5And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.6You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.7Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die.8But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” As we enter the 21st Century in America we are faced with many challenges and opportunities. As a Christian we are rowing upstream against a society that

is basically anti-Christian. Many things about the future are both exciting and fearful. No matter what we face in the unpredictable 2000, as cultural, political and spiritual changes approach us at mach speed, few of us will experience the intense, painful opportunities that a man named Daniel faced. Though this story is 2,500 years old, the message is as contemporary as today’s headlines. In every crisis and trauma Daniel faced he found opportunity and God used him for good in the world.. Daniel serves as an excellent model for us as we embark on the adventure of living in the new millennium. What do we know about Daniel? Daniel was born into a wealthy family. He was part of the elite of his day. Daniel was a “Renaissance man” of his day. He was valedictorian of his class. He worked hard and studied hard. Chapter one of Daniel says that Daniel had encyclopedic knowledge of many things in the world:

scientifically, socially, spiritually and politically. Amen! Daniel was a well-rounded young man. He not only was smart he was healthy and physically fit. He not only was a teacher’s dream he was a coach’s dream. Daniel had a high social standing. He was a relative of the king of Judah, raised with all the privileges and status of royalty: wealth, power and education. He probably hobknobbed with kings and dignitaries throughout the Eastern Mediterranean world. He enjoyed a host of servants. With all his wealth and charm Daniel was every mother-in-law’s dream. Amen! Yet with his privileges Daniel was not proud or arrogant. He was a young man of character. He was not lazy or selfindulgent. He was absolutely committed to God and refused to compromise himself in any area. Daniel was a young man with a future. He would have been voted the most likely to succeed in his class.

5  By Henry Nelson

But Daniel was caught in a world system and culture that forgot God. God repeatedly sent prophets to warn the people of Israel but they continued to rebel and live in sin. In 605BC God allowed the superpower of that day, Nebuchadnezaar and his Babylonian armies to attack Jerusalem and take over the city. Before returning to Babylon, Nebuchadnezar set up a puppet government in Jerusalem and as an insurance policy against further rebellion he took members of the royal family back to Babylon as captives. Daniel was one of the youngest hostages selected. Nebuchadnezzar’s plans called for Daniel and his friends to be rigorously trained and indoctrinated for three years. Then at the age of 17 they would enter the King’s service.

Martin Luther King Jr. Parade & Festival Martin Luther King Jr. was first a pastor, then a civil rights leader and activist who lead our community to equality by using non violent civil disobedience as a means of being heard. He led the 1955 Montgomery Alabama bus boycott and was a founding member and first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). After 50 years we still recite parts of his 1963 “I have a Dream” speech which was deliver at his march on Washington. As a man ahead of his time and a change agent that lived in an era that was not ready to let go of its oppression of the black community he died a violent death on April 4, 1968. In 1986 Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday became a US Federal holiday and the beginning of the Elite News Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and Festival. It is a parade and festival that we are honored to bring to our community each year. This year marks the 27th year that Elite News will host the Dallas celebration of the Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and Festival. We are excited with the planned activities for this year’s event and look forward to hosting this event. This year the parade will be televised on CBS Channel 11, which is a first for the Dallas Fort Worth market. We are proud of this year’s list of Grand Marshals.

There will be vendors there to provide products and services that will be of benefit to all who attend. A Press Release will be distributed Monday January 14th. It will provide all the final details of the activities. Pre-registration is required for all of those who wish to participate in the parade this year. You can contact Elite News at 214-372-6500 or visit www.dfwelitenews. com to pre-register. The cut off for registration ends at the close of business on Thursday, January 17th. Below is a quote of the value found by one of our community sponsors. Gold Metal Recyclers is proud to sponsor the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade because we believe in the values of freedom and liberty that Dr. King represented and it provides an opportunity for the next generation to come together with pride and in celebration of his life. Because of our family ties in the South Dallas neighborhood for nearly 100 years, we feel a special link to this community and are glad to give something back for something that has meant so much to us.” -Kenny Goldberg Co-Founder, Gold Metal Recyclers

31st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration

By Vee Jackson Haywood, Freelance Writer - Church & Community Liaison –M.L.King, Jr. Community Center Birthday Celebration

Presented by the City of Dallas and the M a r t i n L u t h e r King, Jr. Community Center, The 31st Annual Dr. Martin L u t h e r King, Jr. Birthday Celebration starts Friday, January 18, 2013 – 7:00 p.m. with a Candle-Lighting Ceremony at the M.L.King, Jr. Recreation Center at 2901 Pennsylvania Avenue in Dallas. On Saturday, January 19 – 10:00 a.m., the MLK JR March/Parade start at Dallas City Hall and ending at the Entrance to Fair Park, followed that evening by the Awards Banquet events: Silent Auction-6:00 p.m.; VIP Reception-6:30 p.m.; Awards Banquet – 7:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Hotel; 300 Reunion Blvd;

Dallas, Texas. Remember! Celebrate! Act! – Passing On The Dream of Dr. King! The man who coordinates and brings this legendary event to the community is seen as Amazing! Which is an understatement description for Patrick N. Jackson, the extraordinary Manager of The Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center! Why amazing, you ask? The title, Center Manager, has no rightful place in his real life daily center operation of “mega-tasking” – “master planning” -“multi-talented”, and being the “most energetic”, high-tech manager, the City of Dallas might want to claim as one of its best kept secrets! Jackson is an Alabama native; a retired military officer; married with children; Deacon at his church home (Antioch Missionary Baptist Church), loves football, and his favorite song is “Amazing Grace.” While working with the community centers staff and its 15 On-Site Service Agencies, Jackson takes time to visit with the Directors of Sales and Chefs at the

ALABAMA Alabama, back to back National Champion. Nick Saban 3 Championships in four years. Nick has turn down several offers to coach in the NFL, why would you want to leave Alabama. In a runoff election he could probably win the Governorship in Alabama. For sure there’s not a city in Alabama he couldn’t be Major. The game was billed as a National Championship, but I’m not totally sure that, that at this time in history Texas A&M isn’t the best team in the country, but that’s a story for another day. Pregame hype and advertising made this game out to be something it never lived up to. Notre Dame deserved to be there, after an undefeated season. But they left something in Indiana, might have been the same thing Tony Bennett left in San Francisco. Going in the thought was that Notre Dame led by massive nose tackle Lewis Nix 340lbs, backed by Manti Te’o. Could stop Alabama celebrated running game with only seven men in

Hyatt Regency Hotel, to assure the best food and hotel accommodations for the awards banquet guests. Jackson also knows the importance of the Dr. M.L. King, Jr. Celebration to African Americans and our City’s vast multi-cultural community of exuberant people. At the Awards Banquet, there will be an “Ole School” GospelChoir; the sweet sounds of other music; recognition of Special Honorees Dr. Beverly MitchellBrooks, PhD and CEO/President-Urban League of Greater Dallas & North Central Texas; and, Commissioner John Wiley Price, Dallas County Commissioner, District No. 3. The Keynote Speaker is John Hope Bryant, CEO of Operation Hope, America’s first non-profit social investment banking organization, operating in more than 270 U.S. communities and South Africa; has raised a total of approximately $1 billion in economic activity for the under-served. Randall Parker, Jr., the 2012-2013 Celebration Chair, says that The

Wells Fargo Stage Coach is joining the celebration this year with a parade entry of their famous Horses, to help commemorate the Civil Rights leader’s life contributions and the fight for human rights. Parker also smiles, as he echoes the call received from Capitol One Bank expressing their continued dedication and financial support. Clara BrownTrimble, Banquet & Program Chair; Edna Pemberton March/Parade Chair; Craig Anderson, Candle-Lighting Ceremony. When Jackson is stopped by visitors at the community center or callers wanting to serve, he is known for saying,“I like Volunteers! What would you like to do?” Volunteers, which include a team of expert event planners, our Board of Directors, contributing sponsors, church leaders, families and friends are joining the excitement, as we celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.! patrick.jackson@dallascityhall.com – (214) 670-8526. – Award Banquet Ticket Price: $75 / Table: $750 Attire: Semi-Formal

the box. Four down linemen and three backers, earlier in the day there was added pressure to young Mr. Te’o win Skip Bayless said he would be the next Ray Lewis. That’s a human failing, which we have to learn that these guys don’t come along every graduating class. Every guy 6’ 11” that come from Lagos Nigeria is not Hakeem Alajuwon. Prior to this game Manti hadn’t missed but two tackles, the score was 21-0 before he made a tackle against Alabama and that one was made in the end zone .I’m sure the young man will go on to have a stellar NFL career, but I wouldn’t use any of the Alabama tape to impress perspective employers. Manti had more post season award than Audie Murphy had medals in WWll. With Notre Dame political machine rolling they had a great deal of the nation thinking that he would become the first defensive player to win the Heisman. What a revolting development that would have been, the first linebacker to when the Heisman that couldn’t tackle.

Notre Dame had won decisive victories over USC and Oklahoma, USC preseason number one, but beating Oklahoma is not that hard to do after the state fair of Texas close. It’s hard only for the University of Texas. Alabama had very little trouble getting the running back tandem of Eddie Lacy and TJ Yeldon free. And they kept the middle of Notre dame defensive line as busy as I 35 at 8:am. The Irish had the bulk in the middle, Louis Nix ,Texan, Kapron Lewis- moore and Manti Te’o but Bama role through the middle of their defense like they were at practice. They scored touch down on the first three possessions and four of the first five. In a National Championship game that’s unheard of, but let it be known, when Nick Saban has over a month to prepare, you a had better use all of your month preparing for a game and not worrying about the Heisman or any other award. If the Aggie hadn’t been intimidated by LSU,and Forida they could be hoisting that crystal trophy today, they clearly had the team.

Beyond the Fiscal Cliff by Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

Like many actions taken in Congress, the recent vote concerning the so-called “fiscal cliff” was not perfect, but it did allow our nation to avoid severe economic damage and prevented millions of residents in Texas from experiencing burdensome increases in their income tax bills. If the measure had not passed, a Texas family of four earning $65,900 would have witnessed a $2,200 increase in their 2013 tax bill, according to budget analysts. This would have been unfair to people who struggle in an economy that is faltering. The measure also extends unemployment insurance benefits for two million of our fellow citizens who are without jobs. They would have found themselves without any income. It expands President Obama’s expansion of the Child Tax Credit, the Earned Income Tax Credit and the American Opportunity Tax Credit, which helps families pay for college education. The accord will raise $620 billion, according to the Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation. It achieves that goal by asking the wealthiest two percent of Americans to pay more in income taxes, an issue that was supported by the majority of voters during the most recent presidential election. Ninety-eight percent of the nation’s families and ninetyseven percent of our small businesses will not experience an increase in their tax bills. The agreement gives Congress

time to raise the nation’s debt ceiling in a responsible and equitable manner. All of the participants in our budget process now have an incentive to agree to a bipartisan compromise on deficit reduction, while protecting those who benefit from Social Security and Medicare. There were acrimonious debates while the measure was being considered. Some very difficult decisions will have to be made by legislators in the coming weeks. We must have significant discussions about additional revenue sources. We need to consider shared sacrifices. The future of our nation, our children and their children are at stake. I have reservations about any attempts to cut Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid benefits as some are suggesting. These programs are vitally important to millions of people in Texas. The proposed spending cuts, referred to as sequester, will do great damage to our national and state economies if we do not come up with additional sources of revenue. I strongly oppose cuts in services to those who suffer from diabetes, end stage renal disease and other illnesses that disproportionately impact many of those who elected me to represent them in Congress. I am fully aware of the devastation these cuts would have on medical care in economically distressed communities. I will work with the President, members of my party and members of the Republican Party to reach a solution that is fair and just for all Americans. Together we can achieve such a result. It is something that we must do to ensure our personal futures and the future of our nation. *please comment by writing to joe.greenbishop@mail.house.gov

Just a Bite with Lorie at David’s Seafood and Grill By Lorie Blair

Cedar Hill use to be home to a popular seafood chained restaurant named Rockfish. When the Cedar Hill Rockfish location closed it reopened under the ownership of David Wilson who kept the best of Rockfish and improved his menu with his New Orleans flare to his culinary taste so if you do a double take you are not confused the look is similar to Rockfish and even some of the items on the menu are the quite familiar but that is where the similarities end and David’s begin. It has never been a time I visit David’s Seafood Grill & Catering and have not seen David walking through the restaurant and stopping by tables visiting with some of his customers. If you are lucky you might get a sample of a new item that is being developed. I was fortunate to get a sample of the shrimp dip. It had a bite of horseradish but it worked well with the other ingredients and I wanted more. Hey David is this going to be added to the menu soon? Now before you order study the menu but take the time to read the chalk board for the daily specials. I was in a dilemma do I choose

the shrimp and grits or the scallops; both were on the specials board and not on the menu. My sever Whitney knew the specials and was able to help me align the choices available with what I had a taste for. The shrimp and grits promised to have a bite to it since it was prepared with jalapenos in the grits. It has been a while since I have had good tasteful scallops so I decided to have the sweetness of the scallops with a drawn butter to dip them in. I added David’s signature mashed potatoes and fresh sauté spinach in garlic butter. It was a wonderful choice and nicely prepared and plated. Whitney tempted me with David’s wonderful Bread Pudding, Cream Brule or Key Lime Pie. I can tell you from previous experience all are equally good and worth the calories. I enjoyed the Bite I had at David’s and welcome you to stop by and sample the menu for yourself. Tell David I sent you and recommended that you save room for the deserts. My thumb is up and I look forward to my return visit. Maybe I will start with the desert and then order my main course as my desert. Smile! Rollin with a Brotha By KEVAN BROWNING

Welcome to the weekend, baaaaby! Big ups to John Beckwith and the Golden Gate family... Imagine my surprise when I turned on TMZ Tuesday and they were interviewing the master mortician and business man about his new show on TLC! “The Best Funeral Ever” airs at 9p.m. on Monday Night! As we’ve moved into 2013, I am reflecting on my almost 10 years of writing this column... A lot has Shirley Bassey at 76 changed over the last 10 years and if ya wanna figure out some of your future, it’s best to look at the past. 10 years ago, I was a local Radio jock doing the afternoon show for 94.5 and thought writing a once a month column on entertainment would be a great outreach to my listeners. Jordan Blair(I miss ya brotha) strongly suggested I write this column each week. He was truly the man and I deferred to his understanding. It’s been such an awesome bit of fun. 10 years later I am blessed to work for Cumulus Media Network and broadcast a daily Rock N Roll show to over 100 cities around the U.S... Think Tom Joyner, without the money, lol!!! During the past 10 years, my youngest, who was in middle school graduated TWU at age 20... In “03” My Mom, whom we dearly love was enjoying her 70’s in an apartment we were blessed to help provide for her, 5 minutes from our home. She loved reading my article, but warned me that some of the stuff I wrote about celebs might get me jumped! She passed 9/07/12, after living with us for two years... My eldest daughter was “in the world”, trying to “find” herself. Well in 2012, she found herself and like the prodigal child came home, adding much to her Dad’s joy! Our Church, Bibleway Community Baptist in Irving was packed each week and screaming for a new building. Boy, we sure got our praise on up in there, lol! Today, 10 years later, the old church has been replaced by a sparkling new, huge building, which is starting to get “tight” on some Sundays. Dirk was in the house for the Mavs, along with other young guns Steve Nash and Michael Finley. Grizzled vets like the 37 year old Avery Johnson and Nick Van Exel filled out the roster Only Dirk remained from that team when the Mav’s won the NBA Championship. Mark Cuban blew up the team, hoping to get the immature Dwight Howard. Thank goodness he didn’t! 2003 saw the Dallas Cowboys well removed from relevancy with Quincy Carter and Chad “KABOOM” Hutchinson at Quarterback. We started calling Hutchinson “KABOOM”, because he was so slow and the line so bad that when he dropped backed to pass, ya kinda knew he was gonna get hit and hard,lol...KABOOM! Dallas Mayor Laura Miller showed her lack of leadership, blowing an opportunity for the Cowboy’s and a new stadium in South Dallas... 10 years ago, when this column began, it was the year that the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated... The Department of Homeland Security started, big shout out to Brother Winston who works for that agency and plays a mean Gospel organ!... Saddam Hussein and Iraq fall to our shock and awe attack. We are still looking for those weapons of mass destruction. Little did we know they were in the U.S., with the NRA fighting to keep the WMD’s in the hands of citizens! From the entertainment zone, The Terminator, Arnold Schwarzenegger is voted Governor of Cal-li-for-nia... We ran to the theaters to see Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in Bad Boys and other flicks like Finding Nemo and Lord Of The Rings:Return of The King. Well, you get the idea, a lot has changed! As we approach this new year, let’s make the best of it... American is headed for a comeback under President Barack Obama, Lets be a part of it! Happy Birthday to YOU and celebs this week: Shirley Bassey, 76, David Bowie 64, George Foremen 63, Robert Newhouse 62, John Singleton and R. Kelly 45, Doug E. Doug 44, Mary J. Blige 42 and Reggae star Sean Paul 40. Thanks for Rollin With A Brotha In The Elite News.

Toliver’s Talents

By Mark A. Toliver II Elite News Staffwriter

Quarterback the top spot. The leader of the pack. There is no question that the quarterback is the most glamorous position on the football field. Because of the importance of the quarterback to a team’s success, the player at this position will come under closer scrutiny and be forced to play under greater pressure than many of his teammates. The ability to play under pressure is a vital part of a great quarterback’s makeup. Seattle Seahawks rookie Russell Wilson is showing everybody that he is a great quarterback. But where did this rookie sensation come from? Everybody knew about Robert Griffin III, but how did we miss Russell Wilson. Prior to the 2012 NFL Draft, Wilson had been projected by NFL scouts as a middle- round pick. The problem the scouts had with Wilson was his height. Wilson was

Russell Wilson selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the 3rd round (75th) overall in the2012 draft. Wilson signed a fouryear, 2.9 million contract with the Seahawks. The young quarterback made his professional debut on August 11,2012 in a preseason game against the Tennessee Titans. Wilson finished with 12 pass completions on 16 attempts for 124 yards, and Touchdown. Wilson also led the team in rushing with 59 yards on 4 attempts and had a 32- yard touchdown. Wilson got his first preseason start against the Kansas City Chiefs, Wilson finished the game with 13 completion on 19 attempts for 185 yards and 2 touchdowns. Wilson also rushed 2 times for 58 yards. Wilson made his regular season debut against the Arizona Cardinals. The Seahawks lost that game 20-16. But it was the third game of his young career that changed things for the Seahawks. In a game against the Green Bay Packers the Seahawks won the game 14-12 on a controversial hail Mary touchdown pass to wide receiver Golden Tate. After this game it seems that Wilson’s career took off. Wilson earned Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week honors for his performance in a 28-7 win over the New York Jets. Wilson threw 12 completion on 19 attempts for 188 yards. Wilson was named FedEx Air Player of the Week for his win over the Chicago Bears in week 13. Wilson also tied

the all-time record for touchdowns passes thrown by a rookie quarterback (26) set by Peyton Manning set in 1988. Wilson finished the 2012 regular season ranked 4th in the NFL in passer rating (100.0), beating the rookie record set by Ben Roethlisberger in 2004 (98.1) Wilson earned NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month honors for December after the Seahawks went 5-0 and Wilson had a passer rating of 115.2. Wilson is fun to watch and has led the Seahawks into the playoffs. The Seahawks defeated the Washington Redskins and RGIII, but that’s not the thing I like most about this young man. This young man is a great competitor but a very humble kid. Wilson married his long-time girlfriend in January 2012. Wilson is a devout Christian and often credits his success in press conferences and interviews. He also post daily Bible verses on his Twitter feed. A reporter once asked Wilson how he celebrated after learning he had won the starting quarterback job for the Seahawks, Wilson told the reporter he went home and watched his favorite TV show. In this culture of Bling Bling and pop in bottle it’s great to see a young man that does not fit the stereotypical professional athlete. Good Luck Russell !! May God Bless You and Help Us Change the World!!! Mark A Toliver II
