CELEBRATING 52 YEARS OF SERVING THE CHURCH AND COMMUNITY FOUNDING THOUGHTS
By William “Bill Blair Elite News Founder
Our Muslim Brothers Recently Muslims in the Dallas area have reached out to various communities in an attempt to explain their faith and inform others that their religion does not promote nor condone violence. The effort is especially important given the recent uprising in the Middle East. Islam is one of the world's largest, if not the largest, faiths. It is practiced by people the world over. It is practiced by millions of people in the United States. It has fundamental principles that its followers are guided by. Islam is not the religion of fanatics. It is the religion of God fearing people who have their beliefs about how life began and where they shall go once their lives on earth have concluded. It needs to be respected and its needs to be understood. Perhaps one of the things that various religious leaders could do is to hold interfaith forums that will bring different types of people together. The objective would not be to change the beliefs of people, but to get people to understand one another better. I have found in the years that I have lived that the inability to understand differences or to even listen to the opinions of others leads to discord and even conflict. That is something that we must all strive to avoid at all times. Muslim people in our community should not have to exist in a climate where they are fearful about their safety simply because their beliefs are different. That is not the way that a Democracy grows. That is not how people who say that they believe in Democracy conduct themselves. A fundamental belief in a Democratic state is in the belief that people have the right to be different. We all need not be the same to get along. We all need not wear white shirts and blue pants. It is indeed shameful that people of deep faith among us should live in fear. If that continues then we are all the less.

Nothing is more convincing and inspiring than to count the blessings of prayer. The Bible is full of cases where prayer became the main ingredient which served as healing for body, mind and spirit. In the book of Isaiah, chapter 38, we read of the healing and recovery of Hezekiah. The Lord said "Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die and not live." Then Hezekiah prayed unto the Lord, because he was convicted and convinced that prayer changes things, and if prayer didn't change the thing it will condition him for the thing. God was moved by his faith and prayer, then the Lord said unto Hezekiah, "I have heard thy prayer and I will add fifteen years to your life..

Texas de Brazil- Dallas My favorite is the Brazilian sausage. Where can I buy a pound or two and have it for breakfast? Now there is no rush. When you need to rest before resuming your choices turn your marker over from green to red and service stops until you change it back to green. Now be careful if it is green servers will stop with their meat selection or you can ask for exactly what you want and they will make sure you get it. Last is desert. I could only look in amazement. The choices, crème brulee, flan, key lime pie, chocolate mousse cake and on. . Our server, Miguel was never far away but never so close he hovered. The manager, also named Miguel oversaw the dinner service without a complaint from us. Both were there to serve and did so swimmingly. Now Texas de Brazil is not the place for dieters nor those with tiny appetites. If you can stop at Just a Bite you are missing a treat. Call ahead for reservations because once you get a table there is no rush to leave. CELEBRATING 52 YEARS OF SERVING THE CHURCH AND COMMUNITY
Thank God for the Bad Times T
By Geraldine Davidson-Hooker
“In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” (5:18) We always find that is easy to thank God when everything is going good. It is not so easy to thank God when everything appears to be going wrong. During these adverse times it is hard to be thankful. Yet the Bible clearly teaches that we are to be thankful for even the bad times we may go through. There are some good reasons why we should be thanking Him for the bad times. God may be using adversity to get our attention. In Acts 9 we read of Saul of Tarsus, later known as the apostle
Paul, who was proud and egotistical, seeking to rid the world of Christians. God had to get Saul’s attention. To do so God struck Saul blind with a bright light. Lying on the Damascus Road, Saul asked, “Who are you, Lord? and “Lord, what wilt thou have me to do”. (Acts 9:5-6) We can safely assume that every time we are going through a major trial, God is trying to get our attention in some fashion. Suffering is a tool God uses frequently to get our attention and to accomplish His purposes in our lives. When we go through trials we are forced to turn from trusting in our own resources to looking to G od for deliverance. Adversity prompts us to turn to God and cry out to Him when we don’t see light at the end of the tunnel. God may be using adversity to draw us nearer to Him. God wants us to walk with Him in sweet communion. But often we neglect that relationship especially when things go good and we feel that we are in full control. Therefore, He may send the storms of life to rattle our world that we might run for shelter in the cleft of the Rock of Ages.
REGISTER TO VOTE SO THAT YOU CAN VOTE IN THE UPCOMING ELECTION!
God may be using adversity to strengthen us. God does not allow us to suffer in order to destroy us, but to chasten and strengthen us. If a butterfly is helped from its cocoon rather than emerging by itself, its wings won’t develop the necessary strength to fly. God may be using adversity to refine us. A diamond is really just a lump of coal. The difference, though, between a diamond and coal is that the diamond has gone through long, hard, hot, and intense pressure. A diamond is formed by way of pressure, heat, and time. God may be using adversity to make us a blessing to others. We never know what avenue God may use to make us a blessing to others. Whether we are ordained of God to be a blessing to others t h r o u g h a ff l i c t i o n s , o r ordained of God to be a blessing to others through good health and prosperity, we should heed the admonition of the Apostle Paul: “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” Someone has said “If you use your pain to bless others, you'll find true healing in the experience.”

“Real Housewives of Atlanta” back with new ladies Socialte Porsha Stewart and actor/director/ producer Kenya Moore join returning "Housewives" Cynthia Bailey, Kandi Burruss, NeNe Leakes and Phaedra Parks. Look for Kim Zolciak, who recently starred in her own spinoff, to pop up from time to time. According to Bravo, Season 5 "serves up a whole lotta donkey booty, sizzling romance, new ventures" and more. The new season will also see NeNe go to Hollywood and work on "The New Normal" and possibly rekindle a romance with Gregg. "A year ago, Gregg and I couldn’t even speak to each other," NeNe told HuffPost when promoting the new Ryan Murphy dramedy. "He’s a big part of my life -- we have a 13 year old -- and I think now we’ve gotten to a place where we can at least co-parent, talk to each other and figure out where we’re trying to go. We don’t live together. I kind of like living by myself ... Gregg can come over, he can even stay over at night, then he can get his ass back home. [Laughs.] Goodbye! This is our new normal.”
Meanwhile, Kandi gets some new love, Cynthia dabbles in pageants and Phaedra creates a fitness video to help others get "donkey booty."

DALLAS ISD GOES MOBILE WITH SCHOOL CONNECT DALLAS –Dallas ISD today launched a free mobile app available for Apple and Android mobile devices designed to keep the entire school community connected to district information through the users’ cell phones or other mobile devices. The app was developed by School Connect, a leading developer of mobile applications for K-12 school systems and institutions. Through the School Connect app, parents who use smartphones and tablets can keep track of important district information as well as receive notices from their child’s school in real-time via push and email messaging. The mobile app provides users with access to information such as student grades and attendance through the Parent Portal, inclement weather updates, cafeteria menus, school calendars, and school bus routes. “School Connect is great for Dallas ISD because it gives parents an opportunity to access school information through their smartphone or mobile device,” said Superintendent of Schools Mike Miles. “As we take steps to improve the district through Destination 2020, it is going to require all of us to work together, and communications is going to be key.” The School Connect mobile app is a secure and flexible communication platform that allows Dallas ISD to easily manage and deliver content that enhances the school-tocommunity communications process. “Not all parents have a computer in their home, but more and more of them are acquiring smartphones. This app will allow Page 10

them easy access to school information,” said Miles. Features include: ● Push and email messaging from both the district and schools ● GPS mapping and navigation ● School calendars ● Access to Parent Portal via Gradebook ● Tap screens for email and phone for district staff and board of trustees ● Information available in Spanish ● Cafeteria and account information through the Mealpay Plus program The service is made possible at no cost to the district through School Connect with no download charges for mobile users. “School Connect is excited to be working with Dallas ISD to help reach the district’s goals for effective and accessible communications throughout the entire school community,” said Nick Migliorino, founder and president of School Connect and former educator. “People are busier than ever and rely on their mobile devices to be connected to what matters most. School Connect allows schools and community members to stay connected through a free and robust mobile platform that will continue to evolve based on their needs.” The district’s School Connect app is now available to download and use for free for Apple and Android users. Go to the App Store or Google Play, download School Connect, and find Dallas ISD among the listed school districts. For more information, go to www.dallasisd.org/mobileapp. September 28, 2012

Prairie View & Grambling State Fair Classic: an HBCU Celebration
Al Wash
We’re all familiar with the saying that “it takes a village”. That’s exactly what it has taken to put together one of the most prestigious events in Black College Football, the “Southwest Airlines State Fair Classic” between Prairie View A&M and Grambling State University. Super Promoter and creator of the State Fair Classic games, Al Wash has credited his village Teresa Coleman-Wash, Pastor Frederick Haynes, State Senator Royce West, County Commissioner John Wiley Price, Pete Schenkel, Earl McKoy, Dallas City Manager Mary Shum, City Councilman Dwaine
Caraway, City Councilwoman Carolyn Davis and Mr. Wilbert Ellis as his team that works together to make the event a success. Al Wash has said that, “he is grateful for the opportunity to provide the community, civic and city with the financial support this event brings. That while this may have been his brainchild over the years the game and the events surrounding the games has meshed many cultures and economic standing together as no other event has done. Through the game all communities come together to enjoy the game and the halftime entertainment.” Al has watched his idea grow from just a game to a HBCU weekend celebration where it now rivals the like of the Bayou Classic, Southern Heritage Classic and the Magic City Classic. Dallas takes football serious and an even more personal approach to the Bands, it is customary that the community has always shown up to support the teams and show their community spirit. When Tim Williams Franchise owner of Williams Chicken was asked what he thought about the event he commented that “the game brings an added delight of financial rewards to the community. It provides the City of Dallas and businesses the economic boost we all need in today’s environment.” Additionally, Al Wash remarked that the Prairie View Grambling annual rivalry brings a sense of pride to the alumni base of the respective schools and gives a economic boost to each school’s academic and athletic program. It also serves as a means of inspiring those students looking to go to college.” Grambling State University Tiger’s head coach Doug Williams along with Prairie View A&M University Panthers head coach Heishma Northern will be part of the Kickoff Press Conference
Thousands gather for sold-out Women of Faith Event – Women filled the arena to capacity for Women of Faith’s two-day, most transformational tour yet in Dallas, Texas. Friday, September 20th and Saturday, September 21st, the nation’s largest women’s live event brought the “Celebrate What Matters” national tour to the American Airlines Center. Several women filled the arena to see well-known speakers, authors, musicians and performers. CeCe Winans, Max Lucado, Pat Smith, Sheila Walsh, Ken Davis, Lisa Harper, Angie Smith, Selah and Ballet Magnificat! encouraged women through music, humor, arts and personal stories, which shared the fresh, deep and honest message of God’s love. Ballet Magnificat!, the world’s premier, professional Christian ballet company and the JesusPainterTM brought Scripture and songs to life through visual and artistic witness. Friday night, Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke, Dancing with the Stars All-Star competitors for this season, came out to support Pat Smith as she took the stage to welcome women to the Dallas event. “Women of Faith is great!” an attendee posted on Facebook. “A lot has gone on in the last few years and this has come at a good time to be refreshed and rejoice in the Lord with my church family.” Max Lucado, international bestselling author, took the stage Saturday morning explaining to attendees how God’s grace is like an ocean wave and it just keeps coming. He said the Bible uses the word grace to describe God’s radical commitment to rescue and redeem a people to Himself for all eternity. This grace, chases after us and calls us to God. He encore-aged individuals to know the God who has abundant grace for them. “Grace is God's decision to change everything,” said Lucado. “Farewell earthly labels. You aren't' who they say you are. You are who He says you are.” September 28, 2012
He also invited attendees to join him in praying for 40 days, from September 28- November 6, for God to unite us, strengthen us and appoint and anoint our next President. He said it was not a political movement but a movement of prayer for our country. Every speaker had a powerful message that met attendees on all different walks of their lives and encouraged them to embrace the love that God has for them and to celebrate what Jesus has done. Lisa Harper, Pat Smith, Sheila Walsh and Angie Smith shared their stories of adoption, depression, the loss of a child, hurt and pain and showed how God is the healer and comforter of all and He
wants to have a relationship with each person. The evening concluded with The Voice™ Worship Experience, a combination of music, worship, dance and Scripture from The Voice, a new translation of the Bible from Thomas Nelson. Kara Tualatai, a member of the Women of Faith worship team, said that anytime the Word of God is declared it changes the atmosphere. Women of Faith believes when individuals know that they are fiercely loved by God, just as they are, that is the beginning of living free. According to Women of Faith, living in freedom allows one to celebrate what matters in all aspects of life.

LIBERTY, Texas -- One of the men accused in a series of repeated sexual assaults of a young Texas girl disappeared from his trial Wednesday, following a day of emotional testimony from the now 13-year-old girl who cried as a video of one of the encounters was played for jurors. Testimony continued despite the absence of 20-yearold defendant Eric McGowen, who is one of 14 adults accused of having sex with the girl during a nearly three-month span two years ago. Six juveniles were also charged. Prosecutors and defense attorneys huddled briefly with Judge Mark Morefield in front of his bench when McGowen failed to return to the courtroom following an afternoon break. The judge then told jurors the trial would go on without him. Morefield later said a bench warrant had been issued, and McGowen's bond was increased from $35,000 to $250,000. The judge denied a defense motion for a
Courts
continuance in the case and said the trial would resume Thursday morning. "Your client left voluntarily," Morefield told defense attorney Matthew Poston. Poston and prosecutors did not comment outside the courtroom because of a gag order in the case. McGowen is charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child and faces up to life in prison if convicted. The girl, testifying under a pseudonym, told jurors about two incidents, one in October 2010 and one the next month, in which McGowen and several other men and boys took turns having sex with her while recording the encounters on video. The girl briefly broke down in tears as jurors were shown a few minutes of video of an alleged October 2010 sexual assault in a house in Cleveland, a small southeast Texas town where she and the defendants lived. The girl, who was 11 at the time, said she was brought into what she described as the "baby room" in the house, and that McGowen and others took turns having sex with her. She said the video, which several jurors turned away from, was of her being assaulted by another man charged in the case. "Did the guys just take turns with you?" prosecutor Joe Warren asked. "Yes sir," the girl said. The girl seemed calm for most of the roughly 1 1/2 hours she testified. She mostly gave short answers to questions, often pausing to stare at the floor or ceiling of the Liberty courtroom before responding. She described another alleged rape that November that started in a different Cleveland home and continued later at a nearby abandoned trailer. Asked by Warren if more than 20 males might have assaulted her that day, the girl responded, "Probably." She also told jurors that McGowen used a beer bottle on her during that incident. Jurors were later shown police photos of used condoms and condom wrappers found inside and outside the house in the November incident. Poston, questioned the girl for about six minutes, during which he asked whether she twice told police early in the investigation that she never had sex with McGowen. The girl said she didn't remember saying that.Prosecutors say the girl was assaulted on at least five occasions from mid-September through early December of 2010.
Eight of the 20 defendants accused in the case have pleaded guilty, including all six juveniles. Authorities began investigating that December, after one of the girl's friends told a teacher he watched a cellphone video of her being raped in an abandoned trailer. Three people who have pleaded guilty – two adults and a juvenile who has since turned 18 – testified Wednesday. Isaiah Ross, 22, told jurors he saw McGowen sexually assault the girl with a beer bottle. The other adult, Marcus Porchia, 28, and the teen testified they saw others rape the girl but not McGowen. Ross and Porchia each received 15 year prison terms. The six juveniles who pleaded guilty each received suspended seven-year prison terms. The case sparked outrage in Cleveland, a community of roughly 9,000 residents 45 miles northeast of Houston. Early in the investigation, some residents suggested the girl was partly responsible because they say she wore makeup, looked older than her age and wasn't properly supervised by her parents, drawing widespread condemnation. The case also has been complicated by a belief among many in the predominantly black neighborhood where several of the suspects live that the arrests were racially motivated. All of the suspects are black, while the girl is Hispanic. During opening statements Wednesday, Warren told jurors he would present them with videotaped and written confessions in which McGowen admitted to raping the girl. Warren later showed jurors a video in which McGowen admitted to receiving oral sex from the girl. "What took place to this girl was nothing better than a pack of animals attacking," Warren said. On Tuesday, Poston tried but failed to get the confessions thrown out, arguing that police improperly questioned McGowen. During his opening statement, Poston told jurors that the video evidence in the case doesn't show McGowen having sex with the girl. "The truth in this case is not always what it seems," he said. Most of the adult defendants in the case face charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child, while four face a charge of continuous sexual abuse of a child.
Community Leaders pledge to ‘GOTV’ in 2012 By Denise Johnson Stovall
With only weeks away from the 2012 presidential elections, leaders of the Dallas community have joined together to “Get Out the Vote” (GOTV) through voter education and voter registration. Sponsors of the program include the Dallas chapter of the NAACP, the Dallas Peace Center, the League of Women Voters, various faith based groups, colleges, and community organizations. They have formed a coalition called “Lift Every Voice and Vote.” The coalition helps churches and schools to provide:: comprehensive voter education; ideas on how to host community dialogues, communication strategies for smart voting, resources for connecting issues with elected officials, Kelli Obazee, executive director, Dallas Peace Center, said ‘The ‘Coalition to Lift Every Voice and Vote’ is led by well known persons in the Dallas area including Dr. Juanita Wallace, president, Dallas NAACP; the Rev. Gerald Britt, vice president, public policy; City Square; and the Rev. L. Charles Stovall, North Texas Annual Conference, The United Methodist Church. “We are here for a very, very important meeting,” said Pastor Stovall. “[These] people are committed to making sure that people are civically engaged. This is regardless of one’s September 28, 2012

ethnicity or religious persuasion…We want everyone to ‘Lift Every Voice and Vote.’ Pastor Stovall stressed how Christian ministers and leaders of other religions should take seriously their leadership role in the City of Dallas. “The church and religious institutions and communities of influence are in contact with our eligible voters on a weekly basis. That gives us the opportunities to encourage people to make a difference with their vote on policies and programs, including how budgets are created and used. We put our faith into action when we vote.” The Rev. Britt gave an overview on what happened during the 2008 and 2010 elections and what may happen during the 2012 election if people of color don’t vote. “During the 2008 election, many of us voted for Barack [Obama] for president because he was black,” Britt said. “But we didn’t ’take into
consideration the other people being elected he would have to work with.” Britt added that in 2010, African Americans in Dallas stayed home because they thought the election was not important. That’s when “education was hijacked” and schools were closed in the Southern Dallas area. “It is not enough to get angry. We have to get organized. We have to band together. We can’t look away from the memory that people bled and died for us to vote.” A special GOTV team is provided by the coalition so community leaders will know who to call for voting workshops. The team includes Dr. Wallace, Claudette Brown and Elizabeth Wally. Dr. Wallace leads this group of trainers who teach people how to register others to vote. The GOTV group also explains how people should access data on a candidate for political office. Wally gives startling statistics on how people let issues go

unchallenged until it is too late and elections are over. She did the research through her work with the League. “In 2010, we hit rock bottom,” Wally said. “The Texas population of persons over 24 [years old] with high school diplomas was 80 per cent. But nationwide the figure was 85 per cent. Expenditures per public school student in Texas in 2010 were $8,746. Nationwide the average amount was $10,615 [per student]. The number of the over 24 population with bachelor’s degrees is 25 per cent. The figure for the U.S. is 28 per cent. “The number of uninsured adults 19-64 years was 33 per cent,” she continued. “The national average was 22 per cent. Texas was also the worse in the nation for uninsured children. In fact, in Texas, 5.7 million Texans lack health insurance. Over 1 million of these are children.” Wally contends that something can be done about these poor Texas figures if people get out and vote for their elected officials. “In 2010, the voter turnout the for citizens ages 18-29 was 16 percent in Texas, compared to 24 per cent in the U.S. For 30 [years old] plus, it was 43 per cent. In the U.S. overall it was 51 per cent.” What can you do? Contact this GOTV team for a presentation. It provides flexible programming for any group large or small. Murder suspect: Victim shot himself ‘two or three’ times Robin Y. Richardson ryrichardson@marshallnewsmessenger.com The Marshall News Messenger
“I did not kill this man,” is what Colin Rider, who is standing trial for the Oct. 16, 2010, murder of Carrol Gene Reeves, told an investigator at the sheriff’s office during an interview following Reeves’ death. As the video played, Rider sat solemnly in his chair in the courtroom with a flushed face and tissue handy, dabbing away tears. A few of his family members broke down as well, cradling each other as they listened to an emotional Rider recount his story of the events that allegedly led to the death of his victim, Carroll Gene Reeves, of Hallsville. “It was absolute self defense,” Rider told the investigator, Marty Latham. According to Rider, his visit with Reeves turned awry after he returned to Reeves’ home without selling the amp and generator Reeves allegedly asked him to sell for drugs. “I was trying to sell an amp and a generator for some dope,” Rider told a loved one who had stepped in the interview room. “I told him I couldn’t do it. Then, he shot me in the (expletive) foot. We wrestled. He shot himself two or three times. (Now) I’m going to do 25 years to life for this (expletive) — (behind) some crazy man who can’t get what he wants.” Rider repeatedly told Latham during the interview that he was trying not to get shot. “The gun went off about three, two, one, four – about four times,” he said.
“He said, ‘I’m gonna kill you…I’m gonna kill you….I’m gonna kill you,’” Rider claimed Reeves said, threatening him. When asked by Latham if he had gone into a rage, shooting Reeves in the back and leg, Rider said no. “I did not go into a rage,” Rider said. “I was scared to death.” Rider initially denied shooting Reeves at all. He kept telling the investigator that Reeves shot himself. Rider said as Reeves held the pistol in his hand, cocking it, he kept inquiring about Reeves’ actions. “I grabbed it, pointed it down and (was) shot in the foot,” said Rider. “He’s steady pulling the trigger. Maybe that’s how he shot himself,” Rider said at first. Latham told Rider it was hard to believe that Rider shot himself four times, especially in the back. Rider described the alleged scuffle between him and the victim as instantaneous. He said he grabbed the gun from Reeves in self defense. “The man shot me in the foot. I was holding the gun barrel down. He fired three or four times. I was scared to death,” he reiterated. He said he didn’t realize Reeves had been shot because Reeves never acknowledged it. “We were on the floor. He was on top of me,” said Rider.
Latham told Rider he still didn’t understand why he didn’t at least call the police. When asked if he went to Reeves attempting to rob him because he needed to pay for gas he over-pumped at the gas station, Rider said no. “Carrol didn’t have any money. That’s why he was trying to sell the amp and generator. I was not going to rob Carrol. Please don’t think that,” said Rider. Rider also denied breaking down the door to enter Reeves’ home. He said Reeves invited him in, and insisted again that he didn’t kill Reeves. “I did not shoot that man; that man tried to shoot me and I tried to keep him from shooting me some more,” said Rider. “I was pissed, but I didn’t pull the gun and kill him. I kept telling him, ‘Carrol, calm down,’” Rider said, adding he doesn’t have it in him to murder anyone. “That’s not me.” Latham pointed out that Reeves’ wounds were extremely close contact. He told Rider that while he believes the two were on the ground wrestling as he said, “It’s that one shot that I’m seeing that was not a close contact shot” that didn’t add up to Rider’s story. Latham asked Rider, who had allegedly been doing drugs with Reeves earlier that day, if the meth made him feel enraged, making him shoot Reeves. Rider said the drugs made him feel on top of the world and confident, but not enraged. “This (was) the first time I’ve done drugs in four months,” he said on the video. “I was
scared to death. I never shot anybody. I’ve never been shot.” When Latham insisted that he needed to know the truth because Rider’s story wasn’t matching up with the details that were unfolded at the crime scene, Rider finally made an admission to firing a shot at Reeves. “We wrestled with the gun,” he said, sharing the gun went off. “I even punched him a few times. He had the gun in his hand. I tried to knock him down. It goes off three more times. I move away, push him off to the side and said, ‘I’ve been shot.’ “I fired one more time. He was coming up like he was coming to get me,” Rider said, justifying his actions. “This man tried to shoot me. He shot me in the foot….self defense,” said Rider. In a videotape of Rider and officers at the crime scene recounting the incident, Rider noted again that Reeves was getting up “on all fours” and appeared to be “grabbing something.” “I guess that’s when I shot him,” said Rider. “I just went to tell this man that nobody wanted to buy that generator and amp for dope and all this (expletive) right here happened. “I did not want this to happen at all….all over a (expletive) amp and generator,” said Rider. The trial continues today at 9 a.m. in the 71st District Courtroom.
The King’s Men By Lorie Blair
First let me commend Live Nation and Verizon Theatre for having the guts to allow a major event to be held without serving any alcohol what so ever. And guess what not a soul seemed to miss it at all. The King’s Men tour held this week was awesome. From the time it started to the when it ended there was 3 hours of continuous activity on the stage. Israel Houghton and his soulful jazzy renditions, Kirk Franklin as a extreme director and fierce ball of energy, Donnie McClurkin giving us quality of voice that has never been captured on any of his CD and Marvin Sapp with his heart and soul that can only come from God. For a Tuesday night the venue was packed. Surprisingly enough it appeared to be just as many men as there were women, young to old all enjoying these four King’s Men and their talent. Their renditions of the old gospels we grew up with to the contemporary Christian music we hear on the radio today, they rocked the venue and invited God to join us. Their old and their new, the way we are accustomed to hearing them being sung to as they say on Sunday’s Best making it their own again with a new twist. Friend of God, Silver and Gold, Page 14
Stand, Never Could of Made It, the list goes on. The show was orchestrated to perfection without an intermission. Yes, 3 full hours of nothing but joy. There was no upstaging no this is my segment. You never knew who would be on the stage with whom to perform what song or it they all would show up together singing and directing in perfect harmony. They all shared the same back up singers and musicians. Backup singers included Isaac Caree and winner of Sunday’s Best
season 4 Amber Bullock. All of the back up singers can hold their own in the own rights. And we were afforded a surprise when in the audience Kirk got Meet the Browns Tamela Brown to join in with a song. It was truly one show with 4 different stars leading us all to hear and feel God in the same place at the same time. Funny if four stars in their own right can fall into oneness what about us…

DeSoto Eagles win
Dontre Wilson of Desoto leads the area in scoring The Desoto Eagles are on a fast past to showing the world this year’s team can play. Last Friday in front of a sold out Eagle stadium, Dontre Wilson and Desmond White turned the Battle onBeltline into a track meet. The Eagle's scored over 40 points to defeat Cedar Hill in a game that featured a lot of great plays, a lot of great players, and lot of points! Desoto's defense was the point of interest coming into the game. The Eagle's have played well this year against teams like Jenks of Oklahoma , and Euless Trinity; but questions still loomed. The Eagle's have a very high powered offense, but this years team has a very aggressive, very fast defensive unit. The defense is led by very talented linebacker Taylor Young. Young is one of the top linebackers in the country and may be the best linebacker to ever put on a Eagle uniform. Young leads a defensive unit that get to the ball very fast and very furious. The Eagles defense have made several big time plays that have lead to several points this season. But the Eagles are not just fast and furious on defense but also on offense. Dontre Wilson and Desmond White continue to be an unstoppable duo. White is a very composed quarterback. White has made good decisions with the football all season, White manages the high powered Eagle offense with ease. White is also one of the areas top rushers. Dontre Wilson continue to lead this team on a furious pace to the play-offs. Wilson has been unstoppable both rushing and receiving. Wilson leads the area in scoring on an offense that averages over 40 points a game. The Eagles have played well, but this type of play has to continue throughout the rest of district play. The Eagles are playing in one of the toughest districts in 5A. The Eagles have the offensive speed and talent to get them to the promise land called the play-offs, and this years team has a very aggressive and talented defense that can keep them there!!! Good Luck Eagles!!! May God Bless You and Help Us Change the World. Mark A Toliver II September 28, 2012
Mentorship By Mark A. Toliver II
Every week fans all around the Metroplex fill stadiums to watch this great game of football. Parents, grand parents, aunts, uncles, sisters and brothers all get together and go watch the family ball player. But as large as this game has become, it's still one small thing that has great impact on the world of football. Fans are amazed at how talented college and professional athletes are, fans are always talking about the next great athlete to come out of high school. But before any athlete can play on any level he has to be coached. The coach on most football teams are given very little credit for winning, but most coaches get all the blame for losing. But very few coaches get credit for the time spent teaching young athletes about life. There are so many times when a coach becomes a father figure to these young men. The little thing that has a great impact on the world of football is MENTORSHIP! MENTORSHIP is a personal development relationship in which a more experienced or more knowledgeable person helps to guide a less experienced or less knowledgable person. However, true mentoring is more than just answering occasional question, it's about an ongoing relationship of learning, dialog, and challenge. Chris Freeman is a true definition of mentorship. Coach Freeman started the
Ravens about 10 years ago, and started with one team and only a few kids. And now the Ravens have teams flag football and full contact with kids ranging from 4-12. The team has well over a hundred kids. True MENTORSHIP is not for one season its has to be ongoing! I was proud to know that Chris was a graduate of WilmerHutchins and the majority of his coaching staff played with him for the mighty eagles.
I was invited to the Ravens homecoming this past weekend and I had a blast, the Ravens have great players and great fans! This is where MENTORSHIP begins, on a hot Saturday evening teaching young players the game of football. Thanks Coach Freeman and your coaching staff, it's this type of commitment that will help us change the world!!!
Dallas Cowboys have offensive line problems By Mark A. Toliver II The Dallas Cowboys won the game on Sunday but exposed big problems with their offensive line. Although the Cowboys have very talented skill positions, the offensive line play is a problem and needs major work. After beating the Giants and disappearing in Seattle, the Cowboys were able to survive four quarters of football against Tampa Bay. This is clearly not indicative of an elite team, but winning is winning. If the Cowboys continue to play like they did at Tampa they won't be winning a whole lot of games in the NFL. The Cowboys have inconsistent play from Tony Romo taking a beating from the Buc's pass rush, Jason Witten dropping three passes against Tampa Bay and being penalized twice for false starts. Witten finished the day with two catches for eight yards and has not scored a touch down since November 20, 2011. This type of play is very uncharacteristic of Witten and his health comes into question. In addtion to those problems, penalties dominated the game. Doug Free was penalized three times, Witten was flagged twice and Tyron Smith was caught once, overall, the Cowboys were penalized 13 times. We have to give credit to the defense because they won the game for the cowboys. Anthony Spencer continued his strong play with seven tackles, Sean Lee had an interception, and DeMarcus Ware was good as usual. The secondary was able to make plays, Church was hurt and Brandon Carr was switched to safety and Mike Jenkins played well and had a nice pass deflection on a deep pass. Good all-around performance by the defense. www.dfwelitenews.com

CELEBRATING 52 YEARS OF SERVING THE COMMUNITY
Back Into Bondage Galatians 4:8-20 Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods.9But now that you know God or rather are known by God how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable principles? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again? 10You are observing special days and months and seasons and years!11 I fear for you, that somehow I have wasted my efforts on you. 12I plead with you, brothers, become like me, for I became like you. You have done me no wrong.13As you know, it was because of an illness that I first preached the gospel to you. 14Even though my illness was a trial to you, you did not treat me with contempt or scorn. Instead, you welcomed me as if I were an angel of God, as if I were Christ Jesus himself. 15What has happened to all your joy? I can testify that, if you could have done so, you would have torn out your

eyes and given them to me.16Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth? 17Those people are zealous to win you over, but for no good. What they want is to alienate you from us, so that you may be zealous for them.18It is fine to be zealous, provided the purpose is good, and to be so always and not just when I am with you. 19My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you,20how I wish I could be with you now and change my tone, because I am perplexed about you! Supreme Court Justice Horace Gray once informed a man who had appeared before him in a lower court and had escaped conviction on a technicality, "I know that you are guilty and you know it, and I wish you to remember that one day you will stand before a better and wiser Judge, and that there you will be dealt with
according to justice and not according to law." Some time later the same man was surprised while burgling a house in Antwerp, Belgium; the thief fled out the back door, clambered over a ninefoot wall, dropped down the other side, and found himself in the city jail. Having escaped bondage, the thief found himself drawn back into crime and back into bondage. In our passage from Galatians today we find the Apostle Paul dismayed that His Galatian friends having been set free from the bondage of sin, were so willing to head into bondage of another sort the bondage of the law. Because of his deep concern about them he tries to help them understand the difference between the way of the Gospel and the way of the Law. The passage breaks down neatly into three paragraphs each contrasting a different aspect of Law vs. Gospel. The first is the...

1. Contrast of Freedom vv. 8-11 Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods. But now that you know God or rather are known by God. How is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable principles? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again? You are observing special days and months and seasons and years! I fear for you, that somehow I have wasted my efforts on you. Actually we have a comparison of three states here: The state of these gentile believers before their conversion, as pagans serving other gods; their state after conversion, trusting in Christ for salvation; and their state if they should choose to follow the teaching of the new teachers to follow the Law of Moses. For those of you joining us for the first time in this series of sermons, it’s important that you understand that the occasion of Paul’s letter to the Galatians is that a group of Jewish teachers, that we know as the Judaizers, have been telling these nonJewish Christians that if they really want to be acceptable before God they need to follow the Old Testament
By Henry Nelson teaching of the Law and basically that they must first become Jews to be good Christians. Paul on the other hand is arguing that Jesus Christ died on the cross to pay the price for their sins and that the only way to be acceptable to God is to accept His sacrifice, to trust in what Jesus did. That is, we are saved by faith alone, we do not earn it by following any set of rules, it is a gift of God in response to our trust in Jesus Christ. This is the message that Paul preached when he was in Galatia, the message that the Galatians had received and trusted in. Paul makes it clear that they had left a life of Idolatry. In verse 8 he says, "When you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods." But then they accepted the Gospel message and "knew God" or rather were "known by Him" this emphasizes the fact that ultimately their salvation was not by their choice to know God, but by God’s choice to reveal His truth to them.
