My son is 12. He’s a really good student when he’s pushed. However, when he is left to remember his work or chores, things don’t get done. Most times when he does get around to doing a school project or something major like that, it’s so last minute that it’s not done properly. My husband and I separated and I have two kids younger than him. I need him to be more responsible because I’m not able to hold his hand through every thing he has to do. I have been talking to him about this so much that I can actually see when his face changes and he’s no longer listening because he’s heard

I would suggest that you set up some kind of structured system. Maybe put a large calendar in his room where he posts all his homework assignments daily. Writing it for a second time onto the calendar will help spark his memory; and it is also a record for you. Have him to mark it for the day he got the assignment as well as the due date. Then set aside time on the Saturday before the due date where all upcoming assignments will be worked on and completed. I know this method will help you and your child alike.

The preciousness of life The other day I attended the funeral of my best friend in life. He was a special person because he did not ever critsized anyone no matter what. He was a special person that will be missed. He was my friend since September 1969. We worked together and played together. We traveled to the islands many times. We worked together and tried many new things together. From food to wine. He was a friend that will not be forgotten. I named my son after him “Joel”. He did not tell me how sick he was until the end and it was too late to get more treatment. He had a chance to retire from work early and he took it. He had last worked for the Maryland DOT. This gave him a great retirement and the ability to travel whenever he wanted to. As I write this week’s message I
feel his presence guiding my fingers and thoughts. In the end he could not talk to me because he was in such pain. I would call him and leave him a message so he could listen to it. Only he understood the complicated me! I finally prayed and asked God to take him and let him go home to heaven. He just could not take anymore. His daughter and girlfriend took excellent care of him. Now it is over although the body is gone, but his thoughts will never go away from those that knew him. Psalms 116:15 15”Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.” This seems like an odd verse. Why would death be precious to G o d ? Was not it the entrance of

sin into the world that brought forth the curse of death? Certainly God abhors sin, and I would be willing to say that individuals in their right minds abhor the thought of dying. So why would the death of His very children be precious to God? I think the Bible gives us some wonderful reasons. Let’s look at a few. I. No More Suffering Suffering is simply a fact of life. In sickness and disease, we experience physical suffering. In trials and tribulations, we experience mental and emotional suffering. In sin, we experience spiritual sufferings. No one is an island unto himself. For this reason, no one is immune to suffering. Jesus states in John 16:33, “In the world ye shall have
tribulation.” This is true for the child of God as well. II Timothy 3:12 states, “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.” One chapter prior, the Apostle Paul states, “If we suffer, we shall also reign with him.” Paul again writes in Romans 8:17, “And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.” The Apostle Peter puts suffering in a practical sense when he writes in I Peter 2:21, “For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps.” Amen! TX State Sen. Royce West
AUSTIN -- You as parents can all relate to this as well as I, a father, can also witness. It's what happened every year as my offspring approached the start of a new season, let alone a new school year. The clothes I bought for them last summer, last fall, just didn't fit anymore. I had to dig down and spend money to accommodate growth. Each year Texas, a state that's projected to have almost 33 million residents by 2030, has added hundreds of thousands of new citizens. All will need housing. All will need some way to navigate roads and highways that grow more congested by the day. Many will have children who will add to the annual count of more than 80,000 new students who enter Texas' public schools each year. No more than we can squeeze our kids into the clothes they wore two years ago, can we expect to bind up population growth with the spending patterns of the last two biennia. But today, budget proposals announced by both chambers of the legislature do just that. Actually, alterations made add a little breathing room in some places, but make for an even tighter fit elsewhere. Funding projections are based on the methodologies developed to calculate growth, which sometimes presents a challenge within itself. The initial 2014-15 budget announced by the Senate proposes $186.8 billion over the two year cycle. The House arrived at $187.7 billion. Both figures are less than
the $189.9 billion appropriated for FY12-13. They make true on leadership promises to hold tight on the fiscal reins and dim optimism over last week's budget revenue estimate that said Texas is shedding the dark economic outlook of the past recession. There are glimmers of hope with Monday's announcement by Senate Finance Committee Chairman Tommy Williams that the state would fund for public school growth over the next budget cycle. In addition, both Senate and House budgets include funding for anticipated Medicaid caseload growth during 2014-15; an improvement from the FY1213 plan that left a $4.7 billion healthcare bill that must be resolved over the next few months by budget writers. Under the Senate proposal the state will spend $95.2 billion in general revenue, up from $93.8 billion in the current budget. We all realize that the keys to Texas' economic future must be placed in the hands of an educated workforce. We also know that the cost of college can sometimes make those keys hard to reach. That's why the state must provide a boost to those efforts by restoring cuts made to higher education funding for both institutions and students. However neither budget version heads in that direction. While the costs of tuition and fees at state colleges and universities have increased by an estimated 90 percent since deregulation, support for the same has gone the opposite direction. Higher education funding was cut by more than $900 million under the current budget. Neither Senate nor House plans restore funding, and may in fact, provide even less for colleges in FY14-15. Still left lacking are firm plans to finance transportation infrastructure and future water needs. We must get back on course if Texas business and industry is to be supplied with the workforce it needs. Texas is on the verge of exploring new principles of economics and physics. In theory, some say we can successfully plan to contract and expand at the same time. Such an outcome may also defy logic.

SPORTS WITH BILL BLAIR
Toliver’s Talents
By Mark A. Toliver II Elite News Staffwriter
There are just some stories in this wide world of sports that just have to be told. It’s playoff time in the NFL and the stories are coming out of the wood works. We’ve read about Robert Griffin III, and we are super impressed with the Ray Lewis story. But the quarterback story in San Francisco is the one that has to be told. There’s a young quarterback in San Francisco that I must tell you about, his name is Colin Kaepernick. Now for you sports experts you have heard about him before, but after last weeks playoff performance against the Green Bay Packers, this kids story has to be told! Colin Kaepernick began his pro career as a backup to starter 49ers quarterback Alex Smith. In the middle of the 2012 season, Kaepernick filled in for the injured Smith and became the full-time starter for the 49ers. Not only did this kid become the full-time starter, but he has lead the 49ers to NFL playoffs for the second straight season. In his first playoff game as a starter he set a NFL record for most rushing yards (181) by a quarterback in a game, playoffs or regular season. But who is this guy and where did he come from? Kaepernick was a highly sought after baseball player in highschool. He received several scholarship to play baseball because he was an outstanding pitcher. Kaepernick wanted to be a football player, but

he was tall and some what skinny. Kaepernick was 6’5” and weighed 170 pounds. During his junior year his high school coach made a highlight film of Kaepernick. Colin’s brother Kyle made copies and sent it out to about 100 different colleges. Kaepernick had a strong arm, but his throwing mechanics were bad. He received some interest but no offers for scholarships. Barry Sacks an assistant at the University of Nevada saw Kaepernick dominate a high school basketball game on an evening when Kaepernick was suffering from a fever of 102. Nevada was the only school to offer him a scholarship. Now don’t get me wrong Kaepernick was a great baseball player. He was a two-time all-state baseball player in California and was listed as a prospect on the Major League Baseball’s website in the class of 2006. He was named Northern California athlete of the week honors as a pitcher. Kaepernick also was reported to throw a 92 mph fastball as a senior in highschool. During his senior year in high school Kaepernick pitched two no-hitters. This young baseball star turned down numerous scholarship offers to play baseball at many notable NCAA programs, instead taking his lone football scholarship to play quarterback at Nevada. In 2009 Kaepernick was drafted in the 43rd round by the Chicago Cubs. Kaepernick decided that he wanted to play football at the University of Nevada and chose not to sigh with the Cubs. As a redshirt freshman, Kaepernick saw little action through Nevada’s first four games. During the fifth game of the season against Fresno State in 2007 Kaepernick got his first extended playing time. After stating quarterback Nick Graziano went down with a season-ended foot injury, Keapernick entered the game with 8:23 remaining in the second quarter and passed for 384 yards and 4 touchdowns and 60 yards rushing. despite his effort Nevada lost the game 49-41. Kaepernick made his first start on Sunday, October 14, 2007. Going into the game Nevada was a 26-point underdog to Boise State. Boise State had never lost to a WAC opponent on it’s home field.

w w w. d f w e l i t e n e w s . co m Kaepernick and Nevada almost upset Boise State in one of the highest scoring games in NCAA history (69-67 in 4 overtimes) In the a game against Louisiana Tech, Kaepernick threw for 404 yards and 3 touchdowns with no turnovers and helped lead his team to it’s third consecutive bowl appearance, a first in school history. As a sophomore Kaepernick became the fifth player in NCAA history to pass for 2,000 yards and rush for 1,000 or more yards in a single season. In 2008 Kaepernick was the only NCAA QB to pass for 2,500or more yards and rush for 1,000 or more yards. In 2008 Kaepernick also ranked 2nd amongst all NCAA QB’s in rushing with 1,130 yards and ranked 7th amongst all NCAA players with 7.02 yards per carry. he was also tied 9th amongst all NCAA players with 17 rushing TD’s. Kaepernick is the only quarterback in the history of Division 1 FBS college football to have passed for over 10,000 yards and rushed for over 4,000 yards in a collegiate career. Kaepernick is also the only Division 1 QB to have passed for over 2,000 yards and rushed for over 1,000 yards in a single season three consecutive years. On April 29,2011, The San Francisco 49ers traded up with the Denver Broncos from the 13 th pick in the second round to select Colin Kaepernick as the 4th pick in the second round #36 overall at the 2011 NFL Draft. In his first career post season start, Kaepernick set a single game record for most rushing yards by a quarterback with 181 yards breaking Michae Vick’s record of 173 set in 2002. Kaepernick also passed for 263 yards and 2 touchdowns and became only the 3rd player after Jay Cutler in 2011 and Otto Graham in 1954 and 1955 to run for two touchdowns and pass for two touchdowns in a playoff game. So now that we know who Colin Kaepernick is, just remember - Not all legends are about victory...... some are about struggle, and finding out who we are and our reasons for being here!!!! May God Bless You and Help Us Change the World!!!
DALLAS COWBOYS By Leon Simon
The NFL regular season has come and gone, and again after the spoils of war have been divided the Cowboys come up empty handed. Jerry Jones made some real threatening remarks about changes, and how uncomfortable it was going to be at the ranch. So far they’ve lost two coaches, running back, and defensive coordinator. As in all changes that Jerry makes they were met with mixed emotion. All around the city in barber shops and bars that usual hate for Jerry and the boyz, is making a resounding noise. Jerry needs to sell the team and move on. Folk that’s not going to happen. Their argument against Jerry firing Rob Ryan was how well the defense played at the end, with a lot of no name guys. Jerry said he judge the defense on how they played before they lost 7 players on defense. I really believe the critics’ of Jerry came from the same people that complained after Jerry won second Super bowl that they ran Emmitt Smith too much and that he would not last at that rate. He lasted long enough to set an N FL rushing record that will never be broken. Some time our hate exposes our intelligence. When Jerry bought the team in the neighbor hood of 7or 8 hundred million bucks, alone, he made this team the highest franchise in the world. Estimated value of 2billion dollars. If he had some financial woes I don’t believe he would take much advice from people that have to punch a time clock. I had the occasion to get into a discussion about the three Super Bowls he won, the replied that was Jimmy Johnson, he brought Jimmie here. All you music lovers remember the late great Dave Brubeck’s (Take Five). Everyone knew it was Paul Desmond‘s Sax that made the song, but he worked for Dave. Getting the point yet, they weren’t hiring college
coaches before Jerry brought Jimmie in; they were recycling the good ole boy network of coaches. Now there are college coaches everywhere. Let’s take a look at Ryan, in 2011 there were more defensive record broken against the Cowboy’s. They broke records that had been in existence since the 60’s. They had never lost game after going in to the 4th quarter with 2 touchdown lead the man had an aggressive conversation but a passive mentality, Demarcus Ware had no, 3rd down sacks in 2011 no, 4th quarter sacks, the man had Demarcus dropping into coverage 15% of the time. Arguably one of the best pass rushers in league playing pass defender on plays he should have been rushing the passer, along with fellow defender Anthony Spencer. Spencer could leave this year for salary; if he does somebody might get a pro bowl type pass rusher because Mr. Ryan chose to let him cover running backs in pass coverage. If I were a betting man and putting money in the stock market can be considered as gambling. I’d have to put money on a man that’s been successful all his life, and in football he use advisers such as, Jimmie Johnson, Bill Parcells, Mike Holmgren, Nick Saban, Charles Haley and Larry Lacewell. Don’t let that Sunday morning crew of Tom Jackson, Keshon Johnson, Chris Carter, Mike Ditka, with the exception of Ditka they’re all losers. After Tampa won the Super bowl they sent Keshon home and mailed his check to him. The NFL channel game day crew all have super bowl rings and hall of famers be careful who you listen too when making decisions. Houston couldn’t wait until they hired Wade (capt. Kangaroo) Phillips there defense has steadily declined. Let Jerry do this , it’s a free movie chill out and set back and watch .

Why we celebrate Dr. King Even fortyfive years since his assassination, the work and the message of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. have great meaning and relevance. Dr. King, whose father was a Baptist minister and whose mother was an accomplished church musician, helped to change the very soul of America. He gave hope to a generation of people who were searching for meaning in their lives, and to millions throughout the world who hungered for freedom and for change. Dr. King stood boldly in the face of threats on his life and harm to his wife and four young children. He proclaimed that all people in this nation were equal. His work led to the passage of crucial Civil Rights legislation and to better relationships between various groups of American citizens. A distinguished graduate of Morehouse College and Boston University, Dr. King did not begin his ministry to become a human rights legend. His major interest was to lead a congregation and preach messages of love, forgiveness and salvation on Sunday mornings.
Yet, history had a different role for Dr. King, who became a Nobel Peace Prize laureate. His powerful sermons are still quoted today from Cleveland to Cape Town. Dr. King sacrificed his life for the common good and for common people. In April of 1968 Dr. King, who could have been a dinner guest at the White House or a concert patron in Carnegie Hall, was in Memphis, Tennessee protesting the treatment of underpaid sanitation workers. Dr. King empathized with them, knew the value of their work and gave his life so that their lives might improve. He was in Memphis not because he had to be there, but because he believed that he should be there, and because he felt a commitment to those considered by many to be the “least of these.” And now nearly half a century since a bullet ended a single majestic life, people across the globe will pause to remember the gift that he gave. The work of Dr. King, his commitment to others and his love for all people is still with us. May we continue to live in his spirit, and walk in the path that he helped to establish.

Just a Bite with Lorie at Union Park GastroPub
By Lorie Blair
It is a New Year and time to reconnect with old friends. This week I got to go to lunch with a coworker and old friend. For the last 6 months we made promises to do better about making time to go to lunch and this week was the week we stuck to our promise. We had to make formal arrangements and block out the time from our calendars. Angela just happened to know the perfect place to go, Union Park Gastropub on Main Street in Downtown Dallas. This place is nicely tucked away right in front of your nose. I have walked right pass it on many occasions and missed it. BUT, once you walk through the doors you are in a warmly decorated upscale restaurant / pub / pool hall / after hour’s location. Don’t be fooled by the bar that greats you it is not the center of attention; well not for me. If it had not been for the meetings awaiting my return to the office I would have and could have made an afternoon of just chillaxing. Yep, chillaxing…. As always I asked our server what he recommended. Lloyd suggested the California Chicken Torta with Fried Green Beans for me since Angela already had her mind set on the 4 Chicken Wings with the seasoned fries. Union Park is known for the chicken on steroids. No puny chicken parts served here. I could only eat half of my Chicken Torta (sandwich) especially since Angela gave me a sample of one of her wings. OMG! Although my choice was well worth it I should have ordered the

wings. The wings are absolutely perfect. Not sure what they seasoned them with, a dry rub perhaps but they are off of the chain. The sizes of the chicken wings are twice the size of those other hot wing eateries and twice the flavor. Order them extra crispy like Angela did. Another patron sitting in the table next to ours was served a hamburger. The hamburgers portions are as full of steroids as the chicken. The sandwich and hamburger buns must be special made; I have never seen buns like this one nor had bread so soft. The Fried String Beans are coated in a breading that is flavorful and has a slight heat to them. You have 3 choices of ranch dressing, regular, slightly spicy and spicy. Lloyd was really accommodating and gave me some of each to try. All that I did not dip my green beans in went on the half of sandwich I could eat. Unlike fries the green beans eat well cold. They were my afternoon snack. Now if you are looking for a downtown afterhours spot you have found it. The bar is well stocked, the food is well worth it and there is seating that welcomes conversation around the pool table. If you come in next week and see me sneaking in for Just a Bite of wings just laugh with me but don’t ask me to share. Rollin with a Brotha By KEVAN BROWNING
Welcome to the looong MLK Holiday weekend, baby! Saturday thru Tuesday will highlight the best of what The United States of America has to offer, climaxing Tuesday with the Inaugural National Prayer Services from the Washington National Cathedral. The swearing in ceremony takes place Monday, along with all the parties! Saturday is President Obama’s National Day Of Service. In case ya haven’t heard, The POTUS is asking every American to give back to the community this Saturday. Hopefully this will spark something in those of us who concentrate solely on our own sphere! Let’s continue giving back throughout 2013! If you are looking for DFW Opportunities, please visit my Facebook Page at Kevan Goingtonegril Browning! I am looking forward to the 27th Annual Elite News Parade which starts at 10 am this Monday from the Intersection of MLK Blvd. and Lamar. The parade proceeds up MLK and ends at Robert B Cullum! Bands from as far away as Mississippi, along with celebs including former NFL Great, Earl “The Tyler Rose” Campbell, comedian Earthquake, actress Kiki Shepherd and Hip Hop king Paul Wall are participating! After the parade, please join us at Fair Park’s Tower Building for the free/no admission MLK Festival! Hats Off to the sponsors who help provide college scholarships for local high school seniors! Best movies this weekend? “The Last Stand” features the return of the former Governor of Ca-Li-For-Nia, Arnold Schwarzenegger! “Broken City” is a serious action flick, featuring Mark Walhberg and Russell Crowe! Hat’s off to KRNB 105.7 morning show host Steve Harvey on winning the People’s choice award for “Best New TV Talk Show Host”!... Man, I remember when Steve was trying to make a go of his comedy club off Camp Wisdom back in 93. The success could not happen to a nicer, more concerned for others brotha! This is America! Live YOUR dream! Speaking of living your dream, Old School 94.5 Tom Joyner hosts the Valentines Day, “Loves Train 2013” concert! Patti Labelle, Phil Perry, Glenn Jones, Johnny Gill, Tony Terry and many more will be in concert at the American Airlines Center!
