FOUNDING THOUGHTS

By William “Bill Blair Elite News Founder

Supporting Judge Brown Since May of this year this newspaper has consistently asked you to cast your vote for Phyllis Lister-Brown in her effort to become a member of the 162 Civil District Court. You acknowledged our advice and voted for her in the May primary. You also voted for her in the run-off election in the summer. Now, we are asking you to return to the polls on November 6th and once against cast your ballot for the judge who has one of the finest legal minds in the state of Texas, if not the United States. The vast majority of the political leadership in Dallas, the leaders of the faith community, members of the bar and those who sit on civic and state judicial benches support Judge ListerBrown. They know the importance of judicial fairness and insight. And they see those qualities in their colleague who has practiced law in Dallas for more than two decades, and who has judicial experience. Dallas knows her story well. Raised in Oak Cliff, she was taught personal values by her parents, her preachers and those who surrounded her in the community. She was graduated from the University of North Texas and earned a Law Degree from Texas Southern University in Houston. From the moment that she began to practice law she gained the attention of more experienced legal minds. They began to talk about her as someone who would one day make a tremendous difference in the Dallas legal community. That day has arrived and it is now our divine opportunity to do what God wants us to do, and place Phyllis Lister-Brown on the bench. Even four of the five people who ran against her in the May primary are now supporting her. You can vote for her during the early voting period or you can wait until November. I would be remiss if I did not also ask you to remember that we have a presidential election on November 6th. Do not get complacent and think that victory is in the bag. Every voter who is registered needs to go to the polls and reelect President Barack Obama. He has done a wonderful job for this country and he will continue to do so!

Perhaps you have some unresolved issues that came with you into the year 2012, and seems like following you into 2013. I’m talking about things in your life that you feel you can’t get the victory over. Well let’s try the recipe and formula that Moses gave the children of Israel in Exodus chapter 14. As the children of Israel stood before the Red Sea, the Egyptian army was behind them, to destroy them; Moses gave them three steps to victory, Exodus 14:13; 1. Fear not, 2. Stand, 3. And see the salvation of the Lord. The children of Israel obeyed, and you know the rest of the story. Yes! God came through for them. You too can experience the benefit of the three stages to victory. Fear not, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord and God will show up at your Red Sea, and He will show out for you.

at Campuzano chips, slices of avocado and a little cheese. Not this week. Hmmmm. I had a steak taco a la carte to go with my soup and really should have ordered just the tacos. They reminded me of a large scale street taco and almost a meal by itself. I like my tacos with cilantro, onions, avocado, cheese and salsa. No onions, no cilantro no limes and I had to ask for the cheese. I was served their Spanish rice to go with the taco. It was dry, very dry. I did find it interesting that their focus is on their signature drink Margarita Red. I frozen margarita with a bottle of Big Red turned upside down into the Margarita. You determine how much Big Red you want and adjust it accordingly. There is no bar so you only get served at your table. So if you want good food there is plenty around that provides quality, taste and quantity. But for my Just a Bite I give Campuzano just a pass.

CELEBRATING 52 YEARS OF SERVING THE CHURCH AND COMMUNITY

Thank God for the Bad Times T

By Geraldine Davidson-Hooker

Does everybody else appear to be in the spotlight but you? Do you feel that you labor in sweat and yet, you hardly get a “thank you” or a pat on the back? Your achievements may go unnoticed, but find solace in these words: The work you do for God is never in vain. Some of us are called to serve behind the scenes. You may find yourself trapped behind a desk at work pushing piles of paper and doing your best to survive the day. If you’re a homemaker, you may feel your role is not important because, after all, you follow a routine of cooking, cleaning, and wiping babies. Or is it just a routine?

Could you see what you do as a ministry that is essential to God’s plan for humanity? It’s easy to evaluate your role as minor, especially when compared to others who are constantly applauded for their achievements. But do you realize that a little stone thrown into a big river causes a ripple effect? That note of encouragement you wrote could have saved a life. The time you took to pray for a co-worker may have drawn her closer to God and given her renewed hope. That Bible you gave a young child most likely stirred her heart to answer God’s call to ministry. One day, she will go out and win many souls for Jesus. Is that insignificant? No way! Your reward would be just as sure as hers. God has no favorites (Colossians 3:25). It is not the great task you do that puts you on the path of greatness in God’s eyes, but your motives and attitude. If your attitude is flawed, you could preach at a crusade and win a thousand souls, but God would not be pleased. However, with the right motive, a simple meal you

REGISTER TO VOTE SO THAT YOU CAN VOTE IN THE UPCOMING ELECTION!

cook for a sick neighbor would catch God’s attention. At times you may feel invisible to others, but there is One who sees you and all that you do. No one may give you a “high-five,” but there is One who appreciates you. He is the same One who placed great gifts in you. He is Jehovah, God the Father. The All-knowing, Ever Faithful, and Just Rewarder. That is why we are admonished to view our work as service to Him. He is not moved by our outward acts but by a heart that is devoted to Him. Serve, lead, or do whatever you do from your heart. God who sees what you do in secret will reward you openly (Matthew 6:4). So when you feel unworthy and taken for granted by others, remember God sees all you do from your heart. He appreciates you in ways you can never comprehend. Hold Him to His promises, for He is faithful to His Word. Do your best for Him, and He will reward you in full measure.

COVER STORY

Serving the people of Dallas involved helping people with their medical needs. Those in positions of senority recognized leadership qualities in Chief Bright and knew that he was headed for a special position. In April of this year he was appointed Chief of the 1800-member department whose members are sworn to protect the citizens of Dallas. “Our mission is to provide service to the

“There are a number of ways that individuals can prevent fires,” Chief Bright said. “They can make sure that lit candles are not unattended, that stoves are turned off when they are not being used and that clothing and curling irons are properly handled.” Chief Bright said that fire deaths can be prevented. In 2011, Dallas had only seven deaths caused by fires. That was a record for the city, he said. “We have a fire education division. Their job is to educate people about the dangers of fires and teach them how to prevent them. Anyone who would like a fire education session presentation can dial 214-670-4319 and we will come to their church, their neighborhood association or their place of business.” A father of two children, Louie IV and Taryn, Chief Bright and his wife, Teresa, were married in l982. They met while they were college students.

While growing up in South Dallas, fire chief Louie Bright III wanted to become a medical doctor. The youngest of eight siblings, raised alone by his mother, Mary, he wanted to heal the minds and bodies of others.

As a teenager he met several firefighters whose jobs involved saving the lives of people, and his interest peaked in that profession. In particular, the practice of tending to those who had been injured.

people of Dallas through emergency response to fire and other disasters,” said Chief Bright, a member of the Mt. Rose Church in southwest Dallas, where Bishop Jeffery Thomas Sr. is the pastor.

A graduate of Roosevelt High School, the chief attended the University of North Texas and Cedar Valley College. In September of 1981 he joined the Dallas Fire Department because a major part of the firefighter’s duty

“We are part of the community and we are here to serve,” he said. “Among the programs that we have is one that provides free smoke detectors to any citizen who wants one in his or her dwelling.”

Scholar’s book breaks new ground By Joseph Green-Bishop Elite News One of the most important books on the topic of online distance learning has been recently authored by a Dallas Baptist University Adjunct Professor whose worked is being hailed as an important educational tool by academics and scholars who have reviewed it. A “Brief on Distance Education” was written by Ugandan native Julius S. Sonko, a member of the Nations for Christ Church Julius S. Sonko in Grand Prairie which is pastored by Reverend John Musoke. Sonko, a graduate of world acclaimed Makerere University in Uganda, recently returned from a trip to a number of east African nations and South Africa where he introduced his work, published in August, to African scholars. “Sonko provides a concise primer of distance education, its application and use in sub-Saharan Africa,” said Dr. Kaye Shelton, an author and scholar. “It is a guide for quality education for institutions attempting to offer distance education.” “The purpose of the book is to present a statement on distance education in Sub-Saharan Africa,” said Sonko who is currently pursuing a graduate degree at Dallas Baptist University. “The October 5, 2012

book emphasizes the critical need to evaluate distance education in Africa to ensure that quality is not compromised, “he said. In his book, Sonko points out that a majority of higher education institutions in Africa have adopted distance learning as an accepted mode of educating their student populations. “The book was well received by academicians on my recent trip to Africa,” said the author who lives with his wife, Eva, and their three children, Laura, Ethan and Jeremiah in

Chief Bright said that many people have smoke detectors in their homes but often they are not working. “Teenagers often take the batteries from them to use in their games,” he said. “That is a dangerous situation that we face.” He continued, “We have the third largest fire department in the state of Texas and one of the largest in the country. Each day we strive for excellence. Each day we strive to make our city safer.”

Coming to the United States in 2000, Sonko has established a practice as a business consultant in the mid-cities and is hoping to expand his business environment to Dallas and beyond. “Small business is the backbone of this country and I am interested in helping people succeed.” “Distant education is helping to solve Africa’s challenges of social dislocation, poverty, conflict and marginalization,” Sonko writes in his book. “Distant learning in Africa is of paramount importance and it has played a major role in teacher training and development.” Readers interested in purchasing Sonko’s book can call him directly at 214-226-8249 or they can email him at jsonko70@yahoo.com www.dfwelitenews.com

CELEBRATING 52 YEARS OF SERVING THE CHURCH AND COMMUNITY

Elite News East Texas Report By Kenneth Dean kdean@tylerpaper.com

The problems continue to mount in The University of Texas at Tyler area as students are reporting large gang fights, disturbances and suspicious people. Tyler police said they have arrested additional people since the violence began over the past two weeks resulting in three people being shot and several people being robbed at gunpoint. Don Martin, Tyler police spokesman, said his department is working with apartment management at Cambridge Apartments on Old Omen Road and Varsity Place Apartments on Varsity Place after new incidents. “Both complexes are having criminal activity issues, but we are addressing those and that is why there have been increased arrests at these locations,” he said. Martin said that on Monday night, just hours before Kendrick Harper, 24, of Dallas, and Brandon Rainwater, 24, of Cedar Hill, were shot by an unknown assailant as they sat in their car in the Cambridge Apartment parking lot, a man

UT Tyler students say gang fights, more an issue identified as 18-year-old Blake Irving Thomas, walked into an apartment and robbed two other men at gunpoint. Martin said the robbery was reported about 10:20 p.m. in apartment 412 where the two victims said they were robbed at gunpoint by a person they met on the basketball court at Tyler Junior College. “The victims told police that the suspect had entered their apartment after being let in and pulled out a handgun demanding their cash. The suspect took the cash and fled the area,” he said. Martin said police were later able to identify Thomas as the suspect but added he did not know at this time whether Thomas was involved in the shooting several hours later. Thomas, who was a tenant in the complex but has since been evicted, is wanted on aggravated robbery charges and a bond has been preset at $300,000. Martin said he did not believe the apartment where the robbery occurred was the same apartment where the dice game was going on that Harper and Rainwater had been in before they were shot.

Two days before Harper and Rainwater were shot, Tarrington Joiner, 21, of Tyler, was shot at Patriot and University as he sat in his vehicle. Police said Joiner and another man argued with several other men at Outlaws Club on Texas Highway 110 South but left the club before the altercation became physical. A short time later, a tan Dodge Durango with large rims occupied by several black males pulled up next to Joiner’s vehicle on Patriot at University and opened fire on Joiner’s vehicle, police said. Julie Smith said her daughter is a student living in Varsity Place and she is scared for her daughter’s safety. “My daughter’s roommate called 911 after they saw 50-plus people in the parking lot fighting. … This is the third incident my daughter has had to deal with in a month,” she said about an incident Tuesday night in an email. Police records show one man was arrested for criminal trespass and causing a disturbance the night of the reported fight and since Tuesday there have been several other arrests and reports of suspicious people on the premises.

Police records also show there have been arrests made at Cambridge Apartments in the past several days. Martin said the arrests are the culmination of an increased presence in the area and the cooperation between his agency, the apartment complexes’ management and residents. Martin said extra patrols and a zero tolerance policy is the reason for the increased number of arrests. “There are a small group of individuals that are causing the problems. We are spending a lot of time at both locations there to get the issue cleaned up,” he said. “We told the apartment management what we can do for them and what they can do to help us so we can work in concert with each other to clear up these problems. Anyone with information about any of the crimes or Thomas’s whereabouts is asked to contact Tyler Police at 903-531-1000 or the Tyler/Smith County Crimestoppers at 903-597-2833.

A Day of Unity against domestic violence By BRAD KELLAR Herald-Banner Staff GREENVILLE — Officials with a local organization which deals with the tragedy of domestic violence are hoping to bring the community together for one night, to remember the victims and celebrate the survivors. The annual “Day of Unity” event, sponsored by Women In Need of Hunt County, is scheduled at 6 p.m. Monday at the Best Western Monica Royale Inn & Suites, 3001 Mustang Crossing in Greenville. The event is based on the original “Day of Unity” observance in 1981, which grew to become national Domestic Violence Awareness Month each October. “The theme this year is ‘Even 1 is 2 Many’,” said Michelle Lee, Community Education Coordinator with Women In Need. Lee said Women In Need, which assists the victims of domestic violence through a

variety of services, still feels the impact of the tragic death last summer of Stella Michelle “Doc” Ray, whose estranged husband was charged with capital murder in connection with her death. “I realize Stella was our ‘one’,” Lee said. “But that one is too many.” Lee joined with Dianna Jones from “Project Respect” at Texas A&M UniversityCommerce on Friday to tie purple ribbons — the symbol of Domestic Violence Awareness — at locations in both Greenville and Commerce. Guest speaker for Monday’s event will be Pebbles Dennis. “She was actually a victim as a child,” Lee said. “They grew up seeing it, knowing its impact.” The Day of Unity ceremony will also address the growing problems of teen dating violence and bullying. Other speakers scheduled during the event

include Jeffery E. Dailey, Chief Prosecutor with the Hunt County Attorney’s office and County Court-at-law Judge No. 2 Judge Duncan Thomas. Women In Need provides emergency shelter care, a 24-hour crisis hotline, counseling, support and accompaniment through the legal system, aftercare, assistance with clothing and household needs, as well as job training and referrals. Executive director Roger Robertson said that in the past year, Women In Need had assisted more than 1,200 adults with various services. “A total of 326 individuals were sheltered,” Robertson said. Of those, 156 were children. “That is almost a person a day,” Lee said. And it is not just women seeking the agency’s services. “We help everybody,” Robertson said, adding Women In Need works alongside local law enforcement and the Hunt Memorial

Sentencing slated in truck theft ring case By BRAD KELLAR Herald-Banner Staff

GREENVILLE — Sentencing is set this week for a Royse City man, who pleaded guilty to an organized crime indictment involving a truck theft ring operating out of the Dallas area. Yosvani Bacallao-Dominguez, 37, who has also listed an address in Irving, entered open pleas August 22 to one count each of engaging in organized criminal activity/ theft of property of the value of more than $200,000 and theft of property of the value of between $20,000 and $100,000. An open plea means no plea bargain agreement had been arranged in the case and that Bacallao-Dominguez is subject to the full range of punishment. He is facing a maximum sentence of up to life in prison on the engaging in organized criminal activity charge and 10 years in prison on the felony theft count. A punishment hearing is scheduled October 5, 2012

Thursday in the 354th District Court. Gricel Grijalva, 30, of Royse City, entered an open guilty plea during a September 13 hearing to one count of engaging in organized criminal activity/ theft over $200,000 and a sentencing hearing is set for October 23. Arnold A. Zamora was found guilty by a jury in May of three counts, including engaging in organized crime. The same panel sentenced Zamora to 20 years in prison. Prosecutors claim Bacallao-Dominguez and Zamora were involved an elaborate scheme to steal trailers out of Dallas. Two other defendants — Manuel H. Arias-Robaina and Elvis Pedraza — have trials pending. On the night of March 5, 2010 deputies from the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office joined officers from other area law enforcement agencies in checking a trailer outside a residence on County Road 2472. The trailer did turn out to be reported

stolen, along with a Toshiba television and other items. A Penske truck was reported having left the residence earlier in the day and was stopped in Dallas County, where authorities discovered it contained more than 170 stolen Toshiba televisions. A search warrant served on the residence on County Road 2472 revealed the recreational vehicle, in which BacallaoDominguez and his family had been living, had been reported stolen by the Mesquite Police Department.

Hospital District. “Without the help of the community we could not offer the services we provide.” More than half of the people served by Women In Need were referred to the agency by those who have already received assistance, or by family members and friends of the victims. “And individuals don’t have to be victims of just physical abuse,” Robertson said. As such Women In Need in turn relies greatly on the public’s assistance. “Whether it is monetary donations or inkind, such as canned green beans, or whether it’s clothing or furnishings,” Robertson explained. “All of these add up and help us make our mission of helping victims.” Anyone wanting more information concerning the “Day of Unity” program or Women In Need can call 903-455-4612.

SPORTS WITH BILL BLAIR Toliver’s Talents

By Mark A. Toliver II Elite News Staffwriter

West Virginia and Baylor put on show!! I know it's only week 5 of the college football season, but it's time to look at the Heisman Trophy contenders. Here are my 5 athletes to watch this season. 1- Geno Smith- WSU Smith has completed 83.4 percent of his passes, he has thrown for 1,728 yards and 20 passing touchdowns in only 5 games. 2-Ej Manuel FSU- Manuel has 1,147 passing yards and 9 touchdowns and 1 interception. He also has 197 yards rushing and a touchdown. More importantly Manuel threw for 280 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions in a huge showdown against Clemson. 3-Collin Klein KSUKlein has made powerful runs and he has made some great passes, he also had the leadership. He might not have great stats so far but he does have a great upset performance against OU.Klein has 758 passing yards,5 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Klein also has 289 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns. 4-De'Anthony Thomas OregonDe'Anthony Thomas is arguably the most exciting layer in college football, and the fact that a player coming off the bench is considered for the Heisman is crazy. But watch this kid the second half of the season! 5-Jarvis Jones Alabama- play maker on defense, Jones takes over games and will be a serious contender for the trophy.

Dallas Cowboys have offensive line problems By Mark A. Toliver II

the half, but that pick by Tillman would set the tone for the second half.

The Dallas Cowboys were defeated by the Chicago Bears 34-18 on Monday night. Tony Romo gave up 5 interception on what was a terrible night for the Cowboys.

Chicago came out of the locker room chiding on all cylinders. Not only was the Bear defense swarming Romo and company, but Devin Hester unleashed a lethal doublemove on a 34 yard touchdown that was simply beautiful!!

The Cowboys offense was a mess all night. Dez Bryant dropped several critical passes and DeMarco Murry couldn't find any where to run- but it's the quarterback responsibility to get the team moving. The game started slow. No one scored until the second quarter, when Robbie Gould got the Bears on the board with a 43 -yard field goal. On the following drive, Tony Romo tried to draw Dallas back even, only to find Charles Tillman of Chicago on the receiving end of his pass.

The Bears played a very good game overall. Lance Briggs' 74 - yard interception return with 6:25 remaining in the third quarter took the air out of Dallas with that big punch. After a 39 -yard field goal from Dan Bailey with 2:14 remaining in the third quarter, Dallas still had a chance. With the score 24-10, Morris Claiborne appeared to strip Bears rookie receiver Alshon Jeffery, but the call was overturned after a booth review.

Dez Bryant appeared to run the wrong route, and the miscommunication resulted in a touchdown for Tillman and the Bears. Romo would answer with a 10 yard strike to miles Austin with 20 seconds remaining in

While Romo struggled,Jay Cutler played well. Cutler made several accurate, and welladvised, throws throughout the night.Cutler finished 18-of-24 passing for 275 yards and two touchdowns.Cutler was able to find

Brandon Marshall seven times for 138 yards and a touchdown. cutler found Hester three times. Matt Forte carried the ball 13 times for 52 yards, but the offense was led by Jay Cutler. As bad as Romo was at times, the Dallas' skill players didn't give him any support. Romo finished the night with 31-of-43 for 307 yards and one touchdown, but he had five critical interceptions. Bryant caught eight passes for 112 yards, Jason Witten had 13 catches for 112 yards and a touchdown. Dallas' offense was onedimensional - Murray had 24 yards on 11 carries.Overall, this was a ugly game for the Cowboys. The Bears looked much better in the second half, leaving no doubt who was going to win this game. The mistakes the Cowboys made were too much for Dallas to overcome, and the score reflected that. The Cowboys fall to 2-2 and have a bye week to get things on track!!! Mark A Toliver II
