Victor Beck (October 27) and congratulations to you on your fifteenth year of serving as leader of HEARTLINE MINISTRIES job well done. October has proven to be a blessed month for this family. Last week big brother Pastor Beck performed the wedding ceremony for his baby brother on October 20, which is also the wedding anniversary of his middle brother, what a month to remember. When I need a change of heart Hebrews 8:1-06 1The point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven,2and who serves in the sanctuary, the true tabernacle set up by the Lord, not by man.

Every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices, and so it was necessary for this one also to have something to offer.4If he were on earth, he would not be a priest, for there are already men who offer the gifts prescribed by the law. 5They serve at a sanctuary that is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned when he was about to build the tabernacle: “See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”[a]6But the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is

mediator is superior to the old one, and it is founded on better promises. A few weeks ago we looked at some attitudes we need to have when we’re facing difficulty. We reconsidered the fact that the problem is not always the problem. The problem is our attitude, or our focus, about our problems. We need to focus on our Great High Priest, Jesus, who is able to help us successfully confront any problem. Last year we gave attention to our minds. Today we want to give attention to our hearts. Ever sensed that you needed what we often call a change of heart? You know some things in your mind but brain function isn’t enough. I want to approach Hebrews chapter 8” by talking about “What to Do When I Need a Change of Heart.” It is one thing to change your mind what you’re going to think about it is another to have a change of heart. And both these things can be needed when we’re discouraged. It is not that God does not care it is that our minds and hearts need

7

changing. That is why today’s key verse is Hebrews 8:10: “But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel on that day, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their minds, and I will write them on their hearts.” Amen!

He “sat down in the place of honor beside the throne of the majestic God in heaven” because he was king as well as priest. The Old Testament priest never sat down in the tabernacle or Temple because he was never finished.

What we need is a supernatural act of God. This is a God-thing. There are so many times when I try to do something naturally that only comes supernaturally. I need to ascend to a higher plane.

There he ministers in the heavenly Tabernacle the true place of worship that was built by the Lord and not by human hands.

Personally, I have often faced this in ministry. I try to do stuff for God by my own strength. It is not gonna happen. Even standing here teaching the Scriptures to you takes God giving me the heart to do it. I cannot do it on my own. Do you have anything like that in your life? A relationship? A job? Finances? Forgiving someone? Here is the main point: We have a High Priest who sat down in the place of honor beside the throne of the majestic God in heaven. Circle “sat down.” Jesus “sat down” because He was finished.

And since every high priest is required to offer gifts and sacrifices, our High Priest must make an offering, too. If he were here on earth, he would not even be a priest, since there already are priests who offer the gifts required by the law. 5 They serve in a system of worship that is only a copy, a shadow of the real one in heaven. For when Moses was getting ready to build the Tabernacle, God gave him this warning: “Be sure that you make everything according to the pattern I have shown you here on the mountain.” If you would like the entire message please request it at: recvelations_75044@msn.com

URBAN LEAGUE/PARKLAND PARTNERSHIP BRINGS HEALTH CARE OPPORTUNITIES More medically underserved individuals and families will now receive full healthcare services from a new Mobile Medical van thanks to a partnership between Urban League of Greater Dallas and the Parkland Health & Hospital System. “We are thrilled to be a partner for this mobile medical clinic because, like the Urban League, Parkland recognizes that to build a healthy community, we must be out in the community,” said Dr. Susan Spalding, Medical Director at Parkland’s Homeless Outreach Medical Services (HOMES) program, Youth and Family Centers and Juvenile Detention Services. The fully operational Mobile Medical Clinic provides the same services that are available at large Community Oriented Primary Care (COPC) neighborhood health centers including treatment of acute and chronic illnesses. The Urban L e a g u e , which also serves as the Dallas County Community A c t i o n Agency, used funds received in the Stimulus Package in 2009 under the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act through the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs to purchase the mobile clinic. “The funds received not only provided jobs but also health care services for the next 10 years,” said Dr. Beverly

MitchellBrooks, President and CEO U r b a n League of Greater Dallas. “ T h i s mobile unit can now reach m o r e locations in Dallas County and will provide much needed medical services to more homeless and low income individuals and families of all ages that we also serve,” According to Dr. Spalding, these medical mobile clinics are the only options for some communities. “There are so many different causes of homelessness with patients having a

variety of illnesses and we want to treat them all,” said Dr. Spalding. Since 2008, there has been a marked increase in the number of families served by the mobile clinics for medical services as well as the Urban League for help with mortgages, rent and utilities. For over 30 years the Urban League and Parkland have collaborated to provide much needed services throughout Dallas County including Counseling For Homeless Prevention, the League’s Sickle Cell Anemia and Outreach Laboratory Testing, Community Screening for Preventable Disease Project and the HIV+ Links to Care Program. . Most recently, they teamed up to create a community garden that is housed at the Parkland Southeast Dallas Clinic on Elam Road and provides fresh produce to neighborhoods throughout that area.

Harambee! “How can we come together?” We celebrate “Harambee” during this time of each year. As you may or may not know, “Harambee” means “All Pull Together.” We have come a long way but we surely have a long way to go. I wanted to find out from some of the older youth of our city how we as a world can come together. I met one young lady who has her own ideas about how it can be achieved!

“I think we should come mouths of Babe’s!” Thanks together by learning about Ja’Lisa! You are soooooo different cultures and we right. Just a Bite with Lorie at Pappasito’s Cantina By Lorie Blair Hey L am th I p back. A so A f t e r w having ta a s o m e ta dental Lorie eat work and life hitting me with all that it was worth I found myself between life, crisis and starving. Still looking to venture to new areas I had to stay close to Dallas so out of Pappasito’s Cantina five Dallas area locations I reluctantly drove up to the Northwest Highway for Just a Bite at Pappasito’s. I have a secret I really do not like Tex Mex but it is real popular here so I have learn to like it. Once seated my young server Chris Garcia came to serve me and help me with my choices. Seated next to me was the Kieffer family who was also a first timer

and they helped me with my selection; Combination (beef and chicken) fajitas with a sample of shrimp brochette. At Pappasito’s you get to choose how

you would like your beef prepared (rare, medium, well or any combination in between). I even got to sample the pulled pork. OMG!!!! Not one bad flavor out of the four choices. As with everything Pappasito serves it is fresh and from scratch!! Nothing premade nor premixed and it certainly shows in the taste. If you order a serving of guacamole it is made to order at your table. You can watch the tortillas

being made and served. On occasions I watched the guy making the tortillas walking to a table and serving them after completing the process of making them. Now there are 2 kinds of chips, the thin light ones for the salsa and then the thicker ones for the guacamole. Both are served warm and with abundance. Warning they are addictive and habit forming so do not eat too many before your meal. I had a chance to talk to the Kitchen manager, Jenn. She loves her job as much as my server enjoys his. Now there is way too much served for you to have Just a Bite so now that I am stuffed it is time for Just a Nap. Three thumbs up for a great meal. Launius believes election is an opportunity to improve the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department A few Sundays ago, as I walked through the doors of True Lee Missionary Baptist Church, I was greeted with a joyful noise of praise songs flowing forth from the parishioners bathed in warm, radiant light filtering through the decades old stained glass windows of the historic sanctuary. We were gathered to honor the many years of service of Pastor Donald R. Parish, Sr. and his lovely wife Deborah. My maternal grandfather, Nicholas, raised his family in a home just down the street from the church on Bertrand Ave. Yes, a “white man” in South Dallas – actually, a Croatian who immigrated through Ellis Island and brought his skills from the European marble trade to bear on such notable buildings as the Hall of State at Fair Park which was constructed for the 1936 Texas Centennial Exhibition. I grew up understanding the history of South Dallas – and still do. Decades later, I was so proud to graduate -- ranked first in my class -- from the Dallas Police Academy in a ceremony at the Hall of State my

grandpa helped build. My shiny black shoes graced the equally lustrous floors which reflected my figure clad in a dark police uniform. Hours later, I would trade the glossy shoes for uniform boots and hit the streets of Southeast Dallas for my first patrol as a Dallas Police Officer. I also patrolled Pleasant Grove and Oak Cliff. My mother was the youngest of five children, and her four older brothers all served in – and survived – World War II. I, therefore, grew up immersed in and appreciating the value of service to one’s fellow man, and this is what drove me – an entrepreneur and business owner – to volunteer for both military and police service at the age of 35. I was motivated neither by the desire to “rise through the ranks” or by a paycheck, but simply because of my great love for this place called Dallas that has been my home for over 46 years. As a proud United States Navy Veteran and co-owner of a security consulting firm, I bring my leadership and management skills to work every

day. I pledge to do the same as your Dallas County Sheriff. I will boost morale which has been severely weakened by the current sheriff, Lupe Valdez, and scandals involving retaliation, time sheet fraud, and a rogue deputy tipping off the subject of a search warrant. I will increase the visibility of the sheriff’s office countywide, and significantly boost volunteer “posse” opportunities for you to join me in serving our fellow citizens. I will efficiently manage one of the nation’s largest county law enforcement organizations, and I will ensure that Lew Sterrett – the nation’s seventh largest jail – passes inspection every time. In short, I will make you proud, just as I would want my late grandpa to be. As I sat in the pew at True Lee, I imagined how Nicholas may have walked past the church and waved or struck up a conversation with one of the members – perhaps one of the black gentlemen who, as truck farmers, helped him raise fruits and vegetables in his orchards which stood on the land which is now Frazier Courts Public Housing, where I kept

residents safe. Yes, I would want my Grandpa Nicholas to be proud, and I would be honored to have your vote for Dallas County Sheriff. I’m running as a Republican, so please don’t simply vote “straight ticket”, but find my name near the bottom of the ballot and vote Kirk Launius for Dallas County Sheriff. I appreciate you and I’m ready to serve ALL the citizens of Dallas County as your next sheriff. Please LIKE my campaign on Facebook, and contact me with any questions! Mario A. Baker Foundation 10th Anniversary Golf Tournament Within five months of each other, The Baker family lost Mario A. Baker (34) and Carlyle J. Baker (59) a son, brother, husband and father from heart failure. These

sudden and unexpected deaths of our loved ones, gave our family the passion and vision to start the Mario A. Baker Foundation in an effort to help others who

suffer with this critical disease. In their loving memory, the Mario A. Baker Foundation was formed as a 501(c) (3) nonprofit corporation by the family members of Mario & Carlyle Baker in June 2003. Our mission is to work to educate our communities on heart disease, while assisting financially with the research and development of cures for this deadly disease. Heart disease is the Number 1 cause of death in the United States and The Baker family decided we did not want another family to experience the pain and the loss that we felt

and feel every day. Since our inception, MABF has donated more than $50,000 to numerous organizations supporting the education and fight for Heart Disease including, The American Heart Association, our prime recipient, and others. This year marked our 10th anniversary to host the Mario A. Baker Foundation annual benefit Golf Tournament. This tournament has served as a medium to provide a wide spread of programs and funfilled event in an effort to make a positive impact in our global community and to keep our loved ones legacy alive. The tournament is held each year around Mario's birthday.

The Death of Big Tex By Lorie Blair

On the last Friday of the Texas State Fair Big Tex met his untimely death. He did not die a death of violence or a death of old age. He was only 60 years old, so he wasn’t really old or was he? I am amazed how the announcement that Big Tex having reaching 60 years old has died. WHAT? When I heard the first news report on the radio at first I thought it was a dignitary who had met their untimely death and had to focused on the report to ascertain who it was that had passed. Big Tex, the inanimate talking icon that greeted all

State Fair attendees caught on fire and within 10 minutes he was no more. One of many caller called into 911 announcing that a 50 foot Cowboy was on fire at the fair ground. After the firefighters extinguished his body state fair worker removed his remains in a body bag. And by Monday the passing of Big Tex is still headline news. Well, I guess so since I am still writing about it. Ha! Was it sabotage? No, an electrical shortage in his right foot caused his untimely demise. He started this season with issues and had to have his arm stabilized; meaning he did not wave this year. So, was it inevitable that he would be met with issues this year? Does this mean his electrical parts cannot withstand the years of use making him old? Let’s see, he only waved at us for 10 years. Hmmmm…. And then all the attendees who came the last two days to drop off flowers and things to memorialize Big Tex. Really people??? Please tell me that the record breaking crowds the last 2 days were there to enjoy the fair, the rides, the artery clogging foods, and not drop off flowers and pay respects to Big Tex. Driving around the city on Saturday

I was amazed that the new electronic billboards, you know the ones that have a series of ads, now have added the death announcement of Big Tex. What the heck...Big Tex dies (1952 – 2012). Big Tex Obituary (Timeline) Big Tex was born and started his service October 1952. 1953 He speaks for the first time but has a vocabulary that is limited to “Howdy, Folks”. 1997 Body is transformed to include 4,200 feet of steel rods. 2000 He waves to those who pass by him in the Midway but does not take a step.

2002 He gets new clothes. He has worn the same clothes for 50 years. 2012 He dies but it is predicted that he will be back 2013 to do better things. So, next year when we see Big Tex again will this be his second coming or like the cartoon characters of old nothing can destroy our state fair icon… Beep Beep…

Keeping Seniors Healthy By Joseph Green-Bishop

Jackie Joyner Kersee with Move Baby Move owner Aaron Palmer at KwanzaaFest 2010. United Healthcare, one of the nation’s leading health insurance companies has identified a Texas based company as the leading healthcare provider in the country. The company, Move Baby Move, will be featured in the November issue of Black Enterprise Magazine The owner of the company, Aaron Palmer, who founded the company nine years ago with his late business partner,

Meranda Varnado, said that news of his company’s accomplishments was one of the proudest moments of his life. At the same time, the death Ms. Varnado, who was only forty-five years old, nearly crushed his spirit. The news of the award came only three hours after she lost a lengthy battle with cancer. “I am proud that our company received this award,” said Palmer, a native of San Jose, California who grew up attending the Church of the Living God in Oakland, California. “But there were still tears in my eyes and great pain in my heart because of Meranda’s death. We built this company together. We struggled and we sacrificed and now she was gone.” Palmer said that he would take Meranda’s spirit to a conference in the Midwest next year where he will be presented with the award and that as the company grows Meranda’s sense of purpose and love of people will be at its forefront, it driving force. Palmer describes Move Baby Move as an innovate exercise programs designed for senior citizens that can be performed while they sit in their chairs.

“Move Baby Move utilizes music that is culturally relevant to our participants, in combination with movements such as clapping of hands, taping of feet that reactive the neurons responsible for fine motor movement.” The program helps participants strengthen their diaphragms, decrease the work of breathing, decrease oxygen demand and use less effort and energy to breath. The health education component of the program includes simply understood lessons on nutrition, in combination with holistic health, fitness components and exercise. In the past three years, Palmer and Meranda have presented their program in venues throughout the United States, including the governor’s conference on aging in Iowa, the native American diabetes prevention conference in Arizona, the Oprah Winfrey boys and girls club in Mississippi, the 2009 Texas public health association annual conference, the Nortel employees health and wellness program, the American Heart Association, the Dallas area agency on aging, the national partnership for action to end health disparities and the state farm insurance company’s fifty million

pound health challenge expo. “When we started we saw a need to help older adults regain some of the physical fitness that they had when they were younger,” said Palmer, a graduate of San Jose State University who worked in his family’s healthcare business in New Orleans. “Meranda had an illness and experienced tremendous pain. We understood what people faced when they experienced physical pain.” Palmer said that it was Verenda’s idea to put together an exercise program that people could use while they were sitting. “She called me one night and we talked. That night the concept was born.” The two of them traveled throughout the southwest during the past nine years, logging nearly 250,000 miles on Palmer’s 1995 Toyota truck. “Our program is about people,” he said. “We want to help people live longer and better lives. We want people to move and live. Just go to our website, MoveBabymove.com and begin to feel younger and look younger,” he said.
