Entertainment in Florida, who also produced 13 independent short films. “We are going to be a nationally recognized quality theater that is produced for a culturally diverse audience,” Garrett said. “One of our original missions was to promote understanding between different types of people and we are meeting that objective.” Garrett noted that the audiences that attend the theater’s productions include people of nearly every racial group. Called the “jewel of the city” by civic leaders and elected officials in Ft.
Worth, Garrett, a Houston native, said that the theater, located on Main Street in downtown Ft. Worth, attracts nearly a quarter of its audiences from Dallas. “We are a regional theater and we are very proud of that.” On November 24, Garrett said Jubilee will premiere a work entitled Black Spurs, a family musical about the colorful and diverse history that shaped the Wild West. The production is being funded with a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The production was written by Celeste Bedford and
scored by Ron Hasley. Included among the cast is veteran actor Robert Rouse, Garrett said. “Tickets for the production range from $12.00 to $25.00,” Garrett said. “They can be purchased online at jubileetheatre.org or at the box office. In addition to producing shows and conducting acting classes, Garrett has created productions that have been performed in Ft. Worth area schools. “We have taken the productions into the schools at no charge. We are a part of this community and we believe in giving back to it with our skills and our talents.”

My best friend and I really enjoy your column and we would like for you to settle an argument for us if you don’t mind. We’re both Christians and we attend the same church. We’ve had this debate about alcohol for the longest time. I know we could ask our own pastor, but neither of us really wants to; I don’t want him that deep into my business. So, my understanding of alcohol as it relates to Christians is that we can have it if we’re not getting overly intoxicated, except if you’re a minister or deacon, then I was taught that you couldn’t
have any. My friend says that as Christians we should not drink alcohol at all. Now, the reason why this is an issue with us is because I do like to have the occasional cocktail and if she’s with me, or if she finds out about it, she throws a fit. So what is your perspective on this? I hope this is not too trivial for you to answer; we really do value your opinion. Ask Dr. Hollie Reader Dear Reader, 1 Timothy 5:23 reads: Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities. Do not depend on someone else’s point of view, rely on Scripture. Drinking alcohol should be done soberly and according to the Word of God.

Taking the Super out of Supersize Part I Proverbs 20:1 “Wine is a mocker; Strong drink is a brawler, And whoever is led astray by it is not wise.” The Bible describes this style of living as wanton living, living in the land of excess. We are that type of people; enough is never enough. Gluttony is taking more into the body than what is needed. There are people that eat to live and those that live to eat. When was the last time that you fasted, most do not because they love to eat. It was spoken this last week that we have lost what the prophets and apostles had, such as healing and miracles, Jesus said that these signs shall follow them the believers. We have lost the way because our God has become our belly, our want and desire has been the table. Some of us are so bad that we say things like “What are we having for dinner?” Right
after breakfast. Just like blind spots in an automobile, so are there distractions many of which can be fatal. We just do not see them coming. Overindulging in too much food or drink can be no different than the prodigal son or Belshazzar who was eating and drink to his own death. All because of strong desires to consume. To the glutton, eating and drinking are more important than strengthening family relationships, sleeping, working, playing, or serving God. There is no discipline in the life of a Glutton. The addition to sugar, alcohol, fat, or any substance that is taken into the body becomes the focus of life. Our Nation has a problem with it, which in turn is leaking into the church. Over 7 million people in the U.S. are classified as severely Obese, 13 million are Obese, and 80 million are over-weight. That is over 1/3rd of our population. There are 264 million Americans. Reports have showed that only 10 percent of those have a related medical problem, such as a bad thyroid. The other 90 percent are over-weight because they eat too much and obese because they
chose to be. Gluttony is not something that we can hide it is out there for the entire world to see. Do you realize that the calorie intake on average for all of the countries in the world (excluding the U.S.) is about 436 calories per day! The average American eats 3,576 calories per day! Sugar, the average American eats 129 pounds per year; the average teenager eats 400 lbs of sugar per year. Americans eat 52 teaspoons of fat and 6 to 7 teaspoons of salt per day. You mix those two in a bowl together and you will have a tough time getting the spoon out of the mixture. I laugh sometimes at us when we sit down to a meal that has a super deluxe nachos, to get us ready to eat the real food coming such as a country fried steak, with gravy, biscuits, a loaded baked potato, finished off with a piece of pie, and we have the audacity to say “Let us pray and ask God to bless it for us.” Then we throw away the leftovers. Like most of the other fatal mistakes in the 7 deadly sins, this has land mines that will blow up in our face. Some of us eat or drink to forget a problem, or eat to relieve stress. Some eat because
they have nothing else to do, they are just bored. Well, it is about time that we get a handle on the glutton in our lives. Remember you cannot hide it, so defeat it. It does not just have to be the obese person that can be gluttons; it can be thin people too. Gluttony is turning to food for comfort, recreation, satisfaction, rather than turning to the Lord who supplies all of our needs. Gluttony is more than just about food, what about those that are the exercise junkies, just can’t get enough of the gym. What about those who suffer from bulimia, or anorexia? Excessive dieting is the opposite of Gluttony. Compulsive dieters are just as concerned about food as those who are gluttons. Listen, Gluttony is the sin of being preoccupied with food in whatever state. The Roman world was filled with gluttons; people would fill their bellies and then go throw up just so they could continue eating more. They were totally submerged in self-gratification.

There is an exhibit in Fort Worth that you really should not miss and as the opportunity to see it comes to an end very soon I wanted to highlight it in this article. Several fragments of the famous Dead Sea Scrolls, along with a variety of other rare and precious artifacts have found their way to Fort Worth, more than 7,000 miles for their origins in the Near East. In partnership with The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the Kando family of Bethlehem and the Steve Green Collection, several scrolls are on display at the Southwestern Seminary (Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, www.swbts.edu) as the centerpiece of the exhibition “Dead Sea Scrolls & the Bible: Ancient Artifacts, Timeless Treasures”. The exhibition ends January 13, 2013. The 2,000-year-old fragments include the oldest know copies of the Hebrew Old Testament, transcribed around the time Jesus walked the earth. A truly comprehensive exhibition, “Dead Sea Scrolls & the Bible” displays a total of 21 fragments, 12 of which are on public display for the first time, after being hidden away in private collections for decades. The biblical passages presented include verses from Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, 1 Kings, Nehemiah, the Psalms, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Joel, Amos and Jonah. The exhibition traces the journey of Scripture from the time of the scrolls to modern day, illustrating that history with a medieval palimpsest, a portion of the 1455 Gutenberg Bible, a 1611 King James Bible, and more. Visitors can see a portion of the St. John’s Bible, a modern day, handwritten, illuminated Bible, which took a whole team of artists and scholars more than a decade to
Tickets are available at the door and online, with general admission starting at $25 with reduced costs for seniors, students and children. Exhibition hours are Monday – Saturday from 10AM until 8PM, and Sunday from 1PM until 7PM in the MacGorman Performing Arts Center, 4616 Stanley Avenue. For additional information about the exhibit or to buy tickets, you may call 1-877-789-0876, or visit the exhibit’s website at www.SeeTheScrolls.com. Who is Minding the Kitchen? By Lorie Blair
Have you ever gone to your favorite eatery one day and they were there full of patrons and then gone back a day or so later and they are closed? Have you watched Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares and wondered where he finds these restaurants? Where are the agencies that are suppose to monitor and watch if what we are being served is up to standards and city guidelines? Are
they protecting us or failing to protect us? Well, as I visit the top notch to hole in the wall eating establishments to write my Just a Bite reviews I began to wonder are there locations that produce great tasting food that aren’t quite, well should I say, a little Kitchen Nightmarish? It is one thing to produce good food and to see a serving space that is clean but what about the kitchen? The place we are not permitted to visit. The place completely closed to all of us but the space that can make you ill as well as serve you what may appear to be wonderful cuisine. As I noticed the number of restaurants that we have here in the Metroplex I wondered who regulates these places. How are we to know which ones have issues from those that meet the guidelines for cleanliness to proper food handling and preparations and sanitations. Do we have to research each eating location prior to spending our money? Well, I went on a mission to find out all that I can since it is if you don’t ask and they don’t have to tell us how well they do we never know if we risk food poisoning or just a good meal. Per the City of Dallas Code Compliance Restaurant and Bar Inspection Division there are about 6,000 “permitted” permanent food establishments including restaurants, convenience stores, food and espresso
carts, coffee shops, delis, grocery stores and schools; there are nearly 800 Mobile Food Units/ Kiosk; there are nearly 3000 Temporary Food Establishment inspections conducted annually (occurring mostly on weekends/ holidays) including the State Fair of Texas, New Years Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, Juneteenth, Taste of Dallas, and many other large and small events). All are inspected by a licensed sanitarian from the City of Dallas Code Compliance Restaurant and Bar Inspection Division. All restaurants are supposed to be inspected once every 6 months unless there is a need to do so more frequently. Each restaurant is awarded a score from 100 down to 59 or below. Here is the scoring range per the code compliance website Score Range 100-90 (Very Good - Regular 6 month inspection) 89-80 (Good - Regular 6 month inspection) 79-70 Passing - Requires reinspection within 30 days) 69-60 (Failing - Requires follow-up inspection within 10 days or closure) 59 and below (Unacceptable Closure; requires inspection before reopening) Under City of Dallas Ordinance Sec. 17-10.2(b) a food establishment shall provide a copy of the most recent inspection report to any customer or potential customer upon request. If we don’t ask then they don’t have to tell where is the push for a restaurant
to provide top notch conditions? Hmmmmmm…. Even private cafeterias like the ones at your job are subject to these ordinances. They too must comply with the rules and grading or suffer the same consequences. You can also go to the City of Dallas Code Compliance website restaurant and bar link inspection http://www. dallascityhall.com/code_compliance/ index.html. From this link you can go to the food score link http://www. dallascityhall.com/code_compliance/ restaurant_food_scores.html and then search the Search the Restaurant Food Scores link to see how well or poorly a restaurant or your office cafeteria follows the cities sanitation standards. I did my own search and found that the inspectors are way behind or not posting scores as they should be. So if you ask and they do not give you a current score know that they may be giving you all that they have and the inspectors haven’t done their six month inspections. I also found some places that are thought to be upper crust had questionable scores at one time this year and places that I thought a home like restaurant that constantly score high. OUCH!!! Lesson learned here is that cost does not guarantee quality and quality does not come in the packages you expect it to come in. Some years ago I remembered that the media would report restaurant scores and provide us with notification when restaurants were being closed. Today there seems not to be anyone supplying us with this information. Are we to
assume all restaurants are self managing their behavior? Doubt it! In California and New York City all restaurants must post their grade at their entry. It is a way of self patrolling and behavior modification. It is simple how this works; the city inspects and provides a grade. The restaurant must post their grade where all patrons can see it. If they get a grade lower than what a consumer thinks is acceptable then the establishment tends to serve fewer patrons. So, if you tie their ability to earn a living with the sign on the door the behavior in the kitchen tends to change. Yes!! I called the City of Dallas code compliance office. It is sad that when we are talking about our welfare and safety this department has been severely understaffed. Due to budget cuts and layoffs the City of Dallas Code Compliance has gone from a 20 person inspection team down to 8. There is a push to staff back up to 19 by January 2013 but with the number of restaurants there are in the city of Dallas I wonder if 19 inspectors are enough. As a consumer I challenge the city to do more to protect and inform us. As consumers I challenge each one of us to call your city council and ask for change and better protection. Maybe they should require all eating establishments to post their scores as they do in California and New York City. For all the restaurants out there be warned I was given a suggestion for us as consumers to help ourselves. We do not want to be served from a Kitchen Nightmare so here is what was suggested. We should take a trip to the restrooms. If they are not clean enough, lack supplies to wash and dry your hands then maybe you want to rethink eating there. If you tell management that there is attention needed and they do not move to quickly remedy the problem then that is probably the same attitude they may have in the kitchen. Service begins in the kitchen and extends to every aspect of the eating establishment and each eating establishment that remembers that keeping it clean and following the health and safety rules is the first and most important rule of providing us with exceptional service.

Spelman cuts athletics in favor of campus – wide wellness initiative Many colleges will do just about anything to get a bigger share of the ever-increasing revenue and recognition brought from participation in intercollegiate athletics. This past year alone, universities rushed to join conferences that made little sense geographically or competitively, and college presidents dropped their initial resistance to a football playoff system. Spelman College is doing the exact opposite. The historically black liberal arts women’s college in Atlanta will announce today that it is completely eliminating intercollegiate athletics at the end of this academic year. Granted, Spelman’s presence in the NCAA was minuscule compared to that of many others, and the Division III College with 80 athletes is hardly getting the same attention as the Division I program that fields hundreds (and enjoys lucrative deals from championship appearances and television contracts).
So rather than dedicate its resources to programs from which only 4 percent of Spelman’s 2,000 students benefit, President Beverly Daniel Tatum decided to direct that money--nearly $1 million--and energy toward a campus wide fitness and wellness initiative that she sees as crucial to her students’ health and overall well-being. “We say we are preparing them for their future lives, but when we think about our involvement in intercollegiate athletics or our activities in our physical education classes, those are not necessarily the things they’re going to do after graduation,” Tatum said in an interview. “We want them to live long and healthy lives so they can get the return on that investment they’ve made in higher education…. We really see this as a lifesaving activity that we are engaging in.” Life-saving because 44 percent of black women over the age of 20 have high blood pressure, according to the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention, and black women are more than twice as likely as white women to develop Type 2 diabetes. Life-saving because black women are more likely to suffer and die early from heart disease, breast cancer or stroke, afflictions all linked to obesity – and because four in five black women are obese or overweight, and by the age of 17 more than half of black girls repot engaging in no leisure time physical activity at all, according to the National Institutes of Health. While Tatum hopes other institutions will follow suit in their own ways, she said, Spelman has “not only a special responsibility, but a special opportunity” -- as a historically black college -- to address this issue. And regarding Spelman in particular, she points to its mission statement, which “seeks to empower the total person.” “The habits you develop as a college student often carry you through the rest of your life. We have four years to really shape students in many
different ways,” she said. “In the African-American community, it seems like an especially important moment in their lives to make an intervention.” Spelman has always had a physical education requirement, but it’s redesigning the curriculum to focus more on fitness and activities career women are likely to continue with as adults: more running, less archery; more yoga, less badminton. Instead of teaching how to play the game, instructors will help students understand their own bodies and their individual needs. It’s all about personal wellness. In addition to the PE classes will be voluntary not-for-credit courses, already available but limited in scale because most campus resources were directed toward intercollegiate athletics and not co-curricular activities. Those courses will include things like Zumba and hip-hop aerobics – “lots of creative courses that students See SPELMAN, Page 9

Happy Birthday John Jr. The Golden Gate Funeral Home, a leader in the philanthropic movement in the country, is a trend setter in business because its employees believe in its owners and its owners believes in providing their customers with exemplary service. On a recent Thursday at the Luby’s eatery located on Hampton and highway 67 in Dallas, employees of Golden Gate, its founder, John Beckwith Sr., members of his family, employees and friends of his company came together to celebrate the birthday of John Beckwith Jr., whose reputation for excellence in the funeral industry stretches from the eastern coast of the United States to the western. “The Beckwith family consists of wonderful people who believe in serving others and who give of themselves for the betterment of this community and its people,” said Elite News publisher, William Bill Blair, who organized the gathering. “Dallas has advanced far beyond other cities because of the contributions made each day by people like John Beckwith Jr. and his father, John Beckwith Sr.,” he said. “They continue to be important to the development of Dallas. They have been crucial to our growth for a long time, and their involvement will continue for many years to come.” Many in the business, religious and government communities came out to celebrate
the birthday of the younger Mr. Beckwith. “John is a tremendous human being and astute business owner,” said Larry Taylor, a partner in the Cochran Law Firm. “He has set personal standards for other business owner to emulate.” Among those paying tribute to Beckwith was Dallas pastor and business owner, Corey Toney. “I am delighted to celebrate John’s birth,” said Toney. “He has a giving heart and a spirit of love. Everyone who comes to know him grows to respect and admire him.” The celebrants, including John’s two sisters, Charlotte and Carolyn, ate lunch and were entertained by a blues duo. Dancing took place in the aisles of the restaurant while the party goers, led by Mr. Blair, who recently celebrated his 91st birthday, danced and waved their hands in the air. “This is a wonderful birthday tribute,” said John Beckwith Jr., who thanked all of those who attended the celebration, including employees from Golden Gate. He invited everyone at the party to have a slice of chocolate cake before a benediction was said by Reverend Adrian McCullough, a valued Golden Gate staff member. “I am very happy for my son, for my other children, for the people of Texas and for the employees of Golden Gate,” said Mr. Beckwith Sr. “We have always attempted to serve. It is something that I instilled in each of my children.”

Rick Perry Calls For DrugTesting Poor And Jobless
Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) wants the poor and unemployed to prove they're not on drugs in order to be eligible to receive benefits from the government. "Texas taxpayers will not subsidize or tolerate illegal drug abuse," Perry said in a statement on Tuesday. "Every dollar that goes to someone who uses it inappropriately is a dollar that can't go to a Texan who needs it for housing, child care or medicine." During a press conference, Perry did not say there was rampant drug abuse among Texans receiving unemployment insurance or welfare dollars, but nevertheless stressed it was something the state should prevent. "Unemployment benefits are meant not to be a way of life," Perry said. Florida and Georgia are the only states requiring all applicants for welfare, formally known as the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program, to prove they're not on drugs. A federal court halted such testing in Florida, citing the U.S. Constitution's protections against unreasonable search and seizure, and mocking the state for its claims that the testing would save money. Georgia halted its testing scheme to wait and see how the Florida challenge shakes out.

2012-2013 basketball is underway and we have some local prep stars that are considered among the top 50 impact players in the NCAA. It’s not a surprise, this area has long been known as the hot bed of basketball talent.I will spotlight 4 former high school stars that will rock the court this season. # 1- Tony Mitchell -UNT. Mitchell was the only freshmen in the country to average a double-double last season.Mitchell averaged 14.7 points and 10.3 rebounds and 3 blocks per game last season. The 6’8” 235 pound power forward is a former highschool standout who originally signed with Missouri coming out of high school. But academic issues forced him to sit out a year. Mitchell eventually ended back in the great state of Texas and playing for the Mean Green. As far as pure athleticism, there may not be another forward in the country that can compare to Tony Mitchell. If Mithcell continues to develop his all around game, and if he continues to dominate and overwhelm Before the judiciary put a stop to the testing, results from Florida's drug testing program suggested TANF applicants were much less likely than the general population to use drugs. Federal law does not allow states to implement blanket testing of unemployment claimants, but Congress recently said states could test in certain circumstances . Twenty states already deny benefits to people who lose their jobs for drug-related reasons, according to the National Employment Law Project. Republicans in the Arizona State Legislature briefly pursued a drug testing bill earlier this year, but gave up after the Labor Department notified the state that the measure would jeopardize federal unemployment tax credits for the state's businesses. Terry Burke, director of the Texas chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, which successfully challenged Florida's law, called Perry's drug testing push "sad" in a statement on Tuesday. "How sad that our state's highest elected officials have embraced this mean-spirited measure that would punish innocent children for their parents' conduct," Burke said. "This proposal is a costly, ineffective, inhumane and punitive effort by state government based on stereotypes about our state’s neediest Texans."
weaker competition in his conference, he’s definitely got a chance to be a lottery pick in the 2013 NBA draft,#2- Le’Bryan Nash OSU Nash arrived at O-State last year with some pretty high expectations to live up to. Nash had moments of greatness and moments of struggle during his freshman season, but overall he put together a solid performance, and averaged 13.3 points and 5 rebounds per game. The athletic sophomore swingman will now be looking to establish himself as one of the best players in the Big 12. To do that, Nash has to work on being a more consistent shooter and being a more well-rounded offensive threat. No doubt LB has the obvious skills to be a star.If Nash turns out to be the player he was coming out of Lincoln, the Cowboys should be able to break the 20-win mark and get a spot in the NCAA Tournament.#3Marcus Smart OSU. Oklahoma State pulled off a huge recruiting coup by landing Marcus Smart. The 6’4” point guard drew rave reviews for his performances at the FIBA Americans U18 Championship in

Brazil this summer,he was a big part of the USA team’s run to a gold medal. The talented, humble and determined freshman is the type of player that the Cowboys need to help get the team back on track after a disappointing 15-18 season last year. If Smart turns out to be as good as advertised, he and Le’Bryan Nash have the potential to develop into one of the most powerful one-two punches in college basketball the season. #4-Isaiah Austin Baylor Austin has the type of rare talent and outstanding work ethic to come in and make an instant impact for a Baylor team that will be looking to rebuild it’s front court this season. The 7’0” freashman is already being touted as a potential lottery pick for the 2013 NBA draft, because of his rare combination of size, quickness, offensive skills and shotblocking ability. In Dallas ISD, the Fine Arts Help Create Successful, Engaged Students Lew Blackburn Dallas ISD Trustee, District 5 Given the latest research on the benefits of the fine arts, Dallas ISD parents should not only encourage their children to excel academically but also to take full advantage of the district’s fine arts curriculum. Studies on the impact of fine arts participation show that students with an interest in a performing art may be more motivated and have an increased ability to concentrate when compared with other students. Based on their power to engage students emotionally, the arts have come out of the shadow of other disciplines and proven themselves to be effective tools for reinforcing learning. In Dallas ISD, the curriculum provides students the opportunity to participate in at least one fine art at every grade level. In addition, field trips present opportunities for students to visit museums, the symphony, dance performances and the opera. Evidence exists that such exposure helps to reduce student dropout, raises student attendance, builds critical thinking skills and creates more enthusiasm for learning. In our schools, students at every grade level can learn not only to experience art but also to create it. From drawing and painting to singing in a choir, playing in a band or orchestra, joining a dance group, or performing in a play, students have extensive
opportunities to explore their creativity. In middle and high school, Dallas ISD students can pursue serious study of instrumental music, including being assigned an instrument for their personal use. The arts also provide a lifeline to students considered at-risk, some of whom may lack the motivation or self-confidence that arms students with the resilience to bounce back from failure or setbacks. As they master a musical instrument, visit a museum, witness a ballet or experience live theater, students are often invigorated and motivated to stay in school and keep moving forward. Through community-supported programs like Little Kids Rock, students are learning to compose and perform their own music on guitar‒opportunities that highlight and give voice to students who might otherwise remain in the background. The Irma P. Hall Center Stage program puts students’ talents on public display as they write, direct, and perform original plays. At the district’s six fine arts pathway high schools−Bryan Adams, David W. Carter, W.W. Samuell, Sunset, W.T. White and Woodrow Wilson‒partner organizations like the AT&T Performing Arts Center sponsor master classes, arrange visits by guest artists and donate tickets to live performances. And at all of our middle and high schools, bands, choirs, orchestras, and theatre students participate in UIL contests as well as solo and ensemble contests.
Families interested in learning more about Dallas ISD schools with special arts programs should attend the district’s Magnet Fair from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Dec. 1, at Skyline High School, 7777 Forney Road. The magnet fair will feature exhibits and information about the special interest areas offered by each of our 29 magnet schools. Parents can also receive applications, information about the application process, the general program requirements, the student selection timeline and the dates each school will host its public open house. In news around District 5-More than 500 students, staff and parents packed the recent District 5 academic pep rally to celebrate student academic achievement. Bands, pep squads and cheerleaders performed and prizes were awarded to students for attendance, honor roll grades and reading. The next rally is set for Saturday, Feb. 9, at WilmerHutchins High School. Target and the Heart of America Foundation recently unveiled a state-of-the-art library at George Washington Carver Learning Center. The renovated space features 2,000 new books, new furniture and shelving, new carpet and completely upgraded technology, including iPads. I am available to meet with your group or organization to discuss Dallas ISD in general, and District 5 specifically. Contact me at 972-925-3718 or at lblackburn@dallasisd.org. Thanks for supporting Dallas ISD.
