Dear Dr. Hollie,
Dear Needing,
I’m ready to marry my girlfriend. I’m black and she’s white. Most of my family has a problem with that, but I don’t care because my mom likes her a lot. On the other hand, my girlfriend’s parents don’t like me. I’m a really good guy, but I guess I do look a little rough to some people, and that’s the reason that they give for not liking me. I’m not thuggish in any way, but I’m young and I think I dress my age, I am 26 and she is 25. I am always very respectful though. My mom thinks it could possibly be because of my skin

Taking the Super out of Supersize Part 2 For just a moment of time think if you would about; What could be done for Jesus if we would spend half of our lunch hour eating and the other in pray and reading of the Word. What could we do if we would take the 10 billion dollars a year spent on diet pills, diet drinks and diet bars alone. Use half of the money for the ministry sake. What does the Bible have to say about Gluttony; Belshazzar was a King of Babylon that had decided during a party to bring in all of the vessels that had been taken from the temple in Jerusalem and to fill them with wine and let the people drink from them. Basically, He was showing off, to his wives, concubines, and lords. Showing how big and powerful that he was, but pride is a close cousin to glutton. Remember neither have any care other than them. Wanton, wanton, Belshazzar was in this state was judged by God to be Wanton. Pride caused a glutton to decide that he could eat and drink whatever he likes, in any manner that he chooses, without
any consequences before God. Pride tells you that this is your body and you can do whatever you want to do with it. God is concerned with us! God made us. As, a Christian we are not our own we are bought with a price, we are God’s. God is very concerned with what we do with our bodies, in Genesis 2:7 it says that “God made us from the dust of the ground, breathe into our nostrils and man became a living soul.” Amen! We are tailor made by God, we are His master piece. God maintains us. Jesus said in Matthew 6:26, “Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap, nor gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not more important than them?” Look at how many times Jesus touched someone, healed someone, and blessed someone, remember the time the Jesus raised the daughter of Jairus? Jesus said to her mother get the girl something to eat, Jesus knows what your needs are. And He cares for you. God wore flesh. Jesus knows about all the aches and pains of your body. So many people say no one knows
how I feel right now. Nobody has ever felt this bad before. Know anybody like that? Jesus knows what it is to live in this world. Have you ever seen a person that has touch a television star, or an athlete, Oh I shook hands with a star I’ll never wash this hand again. You have a shirt of a pair of shoes that an Athlete wore. They are dignified because a star had worn them. Jesus Christ had worn flesh he truly dignified the human body. God lives with-in us. The moment we receive Jesus into our lives we became a new creation, a different person. Now, the temple of the Lord is within us. 1st Corinthians 6:19-20 says, 19 “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” The Old Testament had many scriptures that dealt with the spirit of God dwelling in the temple, but in the New Testament He now dwells with-in us. Amen! We need to be very cautious of what

we eat, drink, or indulge in. How can we take the super out of super-size? We must practice in private. That means if you are ever going to overcome it takes time and prayer to overcome. As with anything it takes you envisioning something for it to take place. Long before the dinners, the parties, or special events, feast or festivals see yourself saying no to the second helping of food. Eat only until you are full; eat slowly enough for the message to get from the stomach to the brain that you are full. The problem lies in will power. You must remember that it is not always the wrong foods that make you a glutton, but the amount that shows you have no selfcontrol. You see, will power helps you to overcome. But, all of us need to learn to pray more to overcome more. Spending time with the Lord helps us to develop our will power. It will help us in all areas of our life. Value your victories. Remember the times that you won a battle, and you can do it again you just need someone to help encourage you to do better. As you down size in clothing you will up size in your spirit, develop your spiritual inner man to defeat the physical man. Keep a journal if you have to, but remember you are good at remembering your failures, try to remember the victories. Dr. Timothy J. Brown Anticipate the supers’ return. Do not forget that once the sin of gluttony is defeated it is not the last time that you will deal with it. Truth is you never get totally away from the sin of gluttony it is never to far from us, it is just waiting for the right time to reappear. On the day when you are preoccupied with other things and you are not thinking about it and you unconsciously do it, give me the super size please, “Oh this one won’t hurt you.” It only takes one sin to make it a sin. The devil will use every way possible into your life. Never drop your guard, The Ashmore Law Firm, P.C. 3636 Maple Avenue, Dallas, TX 75219 always anticipate his Phone: 214-559-7202 Fax: 214-520-1550 appearing and you won’t be surprised. Amen!

Museum joins Stream Energy’s Power Up! Program By Gloria Reed Austin
During these challenging economic times, we are all looking for ways to support your favorite causes while still being conscious of family budgets. National Multicultural Western Heritage Museum has recently partnered with Stream Energy to assist their supporters in helping the museum by simply doing something they already do: pay their energy bill. Stream Energy’s unique Power Up! Program helps raise funds by paying the museum monthly commissions when their supporters enroll for their electricity or natural gas service through the National Multicultural Western Heritage Museum Stream Energy Power Up! Program website. The Power Up! Program is an excellent fundraising campaign for the museum because everybody uses energy already, and the commissions the museum will receive are paid monthly for the duration of the customer’s relationship with Stream Energy. There’s no extra out-of-pocket cost for the customer and the museum benefits on an ongoing basis every month. Please go to www.museum. streampowerup.biz to learn more about Stream Energy, and see how you can help the National Multicultural Western Heritage Museum raise funds while possibly lowering your energy bill. It’s a win-win for all! Just a Bite with Lorie at Studio Movie Grill Arlington By Lorie Blair L th p A so w ta a ta eat
This week a friend of mine wanted to go see the movie Flight Lorie starring Denzel Washington. I had heard a lot of good things about the movie and certainly with Denzel staring in it, it had to be good. Even as he ages he is doing it very well BUT
where should I start? Since this is a
food review column let me start with the food. If you are going to enjoy the movie you now get to pick your seat when purchasing our ticket. Just remember that they are tightly place and there is NO wiggle room from seat to seat. Historically when going to a movie the food, hot dogs chips and popcorn etc are generally pricy but the beauty of going to the Studio Movie Grill is to have a meal not a snack, something to drink and a good movie. Well, readers I got none of it! I love being severed and not having to stand in another line to get my snacks, meal and popcorn and I expected to pay a higher price for the food. I was okay with a $11 Gouda Bacon Cheese Burger with sweet potato fries but not cold food and warm ice tea and you brought me ice. Okay so now let me settle down for the movie because I certainly did not want food to interrupt my enjoyment of Denzel. Well, Denzel you have played every part possible from the good guy, bad guy, gangster now a drug addictive
drunk. Oh no Denzel NOOOO!!! For me the movie shows all stereotypical negative points of being an accomplished black man who has lost it all, beautiful wife, son, job and dignity only to end up in jail. Yes, it ends as one would expect it to end; rock bottom and in jail with the last scene showing hope in the reuniting he with his son. Sigh! John Goodman plays the part of his drug pusher and quasi friend. While Don Cheadle the miracle working
attorney who could get all charges dropped if only…. But, when it comes to the participation of the addiction he has to help the drug addict get his fix so he can become functional. South Dallas Church to install first woman senior pastor Rev. Irie Lynne Session, the former associate minister for The North Texas Area of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the Southwest, will be installed next month as senior pastor at Warren Avenue Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), making her the first woman to hold the job in the African-American church’s 142 year history. “I am excited that the congregation took that leap of faith. Because I know there are people who have issues and concerns with the fact that I am a woman. The responsibility is to be the best preacher and pastor that I can be,” said Rev. Session, 53, who holds a doctorate of ministry in Transformative Leadership and Prophetic Preaching from Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School in Rochester, New York. She plans to help the church, located in South Dallas, clarify its mission, develop its spirituality and to “preach the good news of Jesus Christ.”The
church, located at 2431 Warren Ave., will install her at 3 p.m. Dec. 1. Rev. Session was hired as senior pastor, after 86% of the congregation voted Aug. 19 to call her, said Marilyn Calhoun, pastor installation chair.“It’s that old AfricanAmerican value that a male is the only one that can be in that position. It has been a challenge to get equality for women,” said Calhoun, a deacon at the church. “It also signifies breaking the barriers for other denominations to come behind us.” Rev. Session said she learned she had been hired during a conference call with the search committee, chaired by Deacon Howard Coleman. Elder Bobby Williams told her, “Warren Avenue just made history, “said Rev. Session, who adds, she makes the ninth woman, and the only African-American woman, to hold a senior pastor role in Dallas in the DOC. She preached her first sermon, “A Crazy Call” from Luke 5:27-32, at Warren Avenue

Sept. 30, the day after resigning from The North Texas Area of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the Southwest. In addition to pastoring Warren Avenue, Rev. Session is the advocate and spiritual support coordinator at New Friends New Life. The Dallas agency helps women, who have been trafficked, “leave prostitution,” said Session, who has worked there nine years. For six years Session pastored Rosemont Christian Center in Dallas and views herself as a “teaching preacher.” Rev. Patricia Maples is president of the National Convocation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), whose husband Claude was Warren Avenue’s interim pastor during the search. “I think it’s a spiritual transformation. I feel that it’s not just being the first woman pastor but being a spiritual leader that will move the church into the community,” said Rev. Patricia Maples. Rev. Lloyd Facen, Warren Avenue’s longtime senior pastor, died Dec. 20, 2010.

Parkland health centers promote healthy living to treat diabetes Diabetes patients are enjoying a measurable reduction in disease related complications after participating in Parkland Health & Hospital System’s clinic-based Healthy Living with Diabetes Program. The program, which operates out of Parkland’s Community Oriented Primary Care Health Centers, is a comprehensive diabetes selfmanagement education program certified by the American Diabetes Association Education Recognition Program. “Patients are encouraged to eat a healthy diet, increase physical activity, take their medications as prescribed and manage their stress,” said Meghan Jardine, Diabetes Coordinator -COPC.
Specifically, after receiving a referral from a physician or mid-level provider, patients begin a series of classes to learn more about diabetes basics, healthy eating and physical activity, diabetes medications, coping with stress and diabetes complications. Upon completion, patients continue to create self-management goals as well as proper use of their blood glucose meter and an insulin initiation. The final sessions help patients to establish their self-management goals and check their A1C (a measure for blood glucose control). Once a year, each patient is required to attend a continuing education session to set new goals and check A1C.
The Healthy Living with Diabetes Program is successful in decreasing diabetes complications by an average of 1.5 percent, which experts consider significant for improving quality of life. A recent study comparing patients with diabetes who participated in the program versus those who did not showed that the program saved Parkland more than $3,000 a year per patient by reducing the need for specialty clinic appointments and reducing inpatient acuity. Jardine adds that a nutritious diet is a great start to a healthier lifestyle and recommends the following: • Maximize highly nutritious foods that help with weight loss, turn off disease
promoting genes, reduce inflammation and boost immune function. These foods include whole grains, legumes, vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds. • Minimize or eliminate highly processed foods that are high in transfats and refined carbohydrates. • Avoid processed foods with added fat, sugar and salt. There have been some studies in the literature showing a plantbased diet (no animal products) can be highly therapeutic for diabetes. Parkland also implemented a Diabetes Chronic Care Model this year targeting high-risk patients with more focused managed care by the Transitional Care Unit (TCU) in collaboration with COPC Behavioral Health.

Preaching from the heart
While many in Dallas see C.T. Toney as an astute business owner who has built a successful law enforcement agency and a restaurant, there are those who see him as their beloved pastor, lifting their spirits
to be prayed up to start a church.” Under his leadership, and with the help of many of his friends and family members, Reverend Toney said that New Leaf intends to become a “spiritual anchor” in the Dallas community. “We will have morning worship and Sunday School,” he said. “We will have prayer during the week, but we also plan to meet the needs of people in the community.” New Leaf plans to launch a charter school and an adult day-care facility in the future,” he said. “We plan to be just where the needs of the people are,” he said. “We want to be a vessel where they can anchor during the times of storms.” Mrs. Clarette La Shawn Toney, the church’s first lady, said that she would do anything that is required of her. “My husband is now my pastor and I want to help him serve people and serve God. The answer to his calling has been a long time in coming. I have seen the results in our marriage and the results in
with sermons each Sunday morning that carry them from one Sabbath to the next. “God laid it on my heart to preach the word,” said Reverend C.T. Toney. “It is not something that I want to do; it is something that I must do. I shall follow God’s direction.” Reverend Toney, who has been in seminary for the past four years, recently organized the New Leaf Family Church located at 1707 N. St. Augustine Road in Dallas. “I want people to be in prayer for us,” he said, during a recent interview. You have
him.” The Toney’s four children, Kiara, Cortasia, Kaci and Corey Jr., will be actively involved in the church as will be Mrs. Willie Dyson, who has agreed to be superintendent of the New Leaf’s Sunday School Department. She is the first lady’s mother. “We are going to turn new leaves in the lives of people,” Reverend Toney said. “Our mission is not going to be easy but with God all things are possible. We have a two year plan. We intend to grow and expand. We will go where the Lord leads us.”

College athletes Yeah DFW it’s that time of year when the football season is just about over. High school teams are making a run at State Championships, and College football teams are trying to win as many games as they can in order to get a Bowl bid. And of course the NFL teams are all trying to get a playoff spot, so they can make a run at that beloved Superbowl trophy. The thing I enjoy most about this time of year is the awards that are given out in college football. Each year sports writers around the country vote for the best athletes at their positions. This is really a big thing! It really means a lot for a young College athlete to be named the best in College football at his position. It’s big for a young man to even be considered a finalist as the best player in the country at his position.
Links launch local STEM ACADEMY – The Dallas Chapter of The Links, Incorporated is partnering with the SMU Bobby B. Lyle School of Engineering’s Hart Center for Engineering Leadership to launch a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) academy aimed at reducing the “STEM gap” among female African American students. Additionally, United States Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson addressed the group and discussed the National STEM Initiative. The first STEM Academy session premiered Saturday, Nov. 10, at Caruth Hall on the
SMU campus. The first session will focus on robotics and PH testing, introducing the concepts of electrical engineering, coding, and computer science to the students as well as demonstrating practical applications for chemistry. Subsequent STEM Academy programs include: Jan. 26, 2013 – STEM Careers and Role Models Feb. 9, 2013 – Aviation April 27, 2013 – Global Information Technology May 18, 2013 – Rockets SMU’s Lyle School and the Dallas Chapter of Links, Incorporated and are committed to increasing STEM readiness by providing student participants with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to pursue STEM degree programs. Both are working to make STEMrelated internships, fellowships and career opportunities accessible to all students so they can compete in the global workforce. Born Peter Pendleton in Huntington, W. Va., he sang with various groups while in the Army. After he was discharged in 1964, he changed his name and with his wife, Barbara, in 1966 began recording as The Prophets. Their first gold record was 1968's "I Got the Fever." Other hits included "California" and "Seaside Love" as the Georgia Prophets.

The group recorded a number of hits in the 1970s in the beach music genre, a regional variant of R&B. Scott was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in 1999.
