Behind The Wheel With THE KING (Arthur Prayther)
As we move into our 24th year of evaluating vehicles we had the pleasure of driving the 2011 Cadillac Escalade ESV AWD Platinum edition. Let me say right off the bat we have never seen anything like it. To begin with the vehicle had all sort of room and yet was nimble enough to go into the airport garage turning circle with plenty of room left on both sides. We had to go out to Hobby to pick up the legendary L.C. Cooke and his business manager David Washington for our Fiesta 16th
Cadillac also offered the vehicle in a 6.0 Liter Hybrid engine that gets 322 horsepower at 5100 RMP for the ESV models. The Hybrid model gets 21 miles per gallon in the city and 22 miles per gallon on the highway. A big difference 100 years makes, the Cowboys who rode in the stage coach never seen anything like the interior of the new 2011 Escalade. Equipped
Page 2
2011 CADILLAC ESCALADE ESV AWD PLATINUM with pure leather all over the place, with the Cowboy look for the seats, not to mention the 14way power front seats with heated and cooled cushions and back rest. The second row bucket seats with heat and 2 row seat release and 3-passenger 3rd row seat. Another thing about the new Escalade is with 65 per cent of its part from the United States and Canada and only 31 per cent from Mexico you can say this baby is All-American. Plus the engine and transmission are both home built and the final assembly place is Arlington, Texas.
Other features such as power retractable assist steps and power lift gate in the rear. Even the power sliding sunroof allows driver and passengers to make contact with nature. Listening to your favorite tunes on the Bose 5.1 Surround Sound system with single CD/DVD and rearview camera system. An easy to operate navigation system with connections for Bluetooth for phone adds to the state of the art technology lineup. Three different kinds of leather grace the interior as well as olive ash and walnut burl wood trims
this package up nicely. With warranties of 5year/100,000 limited power train warranty and 4-year/50,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty. Throw in the 4-year/ 50,000 premium care maintenance you have got yourself a honey of a deal. In closing please allow me to add we were really impressed with the new 2011 Cadillac Escalade ESV. The smart Cowboy would trade in his best horse and pick-up for this baby in a New York minute!
Annual Black History Celebration. For the past weekend we escorted the brother of the late great Sam Cooke allaround Houston making radio and TV stops. The new Escalade we tested was equipped with a Vortec 6.2 Liter V8 engine that produces 403 horsepower at 5700 RPM with flex-fuel capability and active fuel management. It is mated to a 6-speed heavy duty automatic transmission. Keep in mind this vehicle also has rear locking differential and automatic rear leveling control. Basically what that does is allow you to maintain the vehicle height loaded or empty. Anti-locking brakes brings this beauty to a swift and safe stop. Numbers are reported at 13 miles per gallon in the city and 18 miles per gallon on the highway. All this rolls smoothly to the pavement on 22 inch chrome wheel wrapped by all-season low profile 22 inch tires. We are talking about a quality ride to say the least.

2011 BUICK REGAL CXL MAKING WAVES By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Alief, Texas-It is clear that GM Buick division is making a very serious comeback. You would have to go all the way back to the late 70s and early 80s since Buick and made this much of an impact. The other week we test drove the new Regal CXL and found it to be a bit of a throwback to the days when the Chevy Monte Carlo, Olds Cutlass, Pontiac Grand Prix and Buck Regal ruled the road for mid-size cars sold in America. However this modern up to date styled vehicle is a far cry from those vehicles when you look at the Germany engineering that went into them. Fact is the new Regal is finally assembled in Russelsheim, Germany. A little less than nine months ago the vehicle went on sale. More than 40 per cent of the vehicle parts come from
Germany with 21 per cent from the United States and Canada. A U S built 2.0 Liter Ecotec DOHC 4-cylinder SIDI intercooled turbo with VVT powers the new Buick. That turns out 220 horses and 258 lbs. per foot of torque. We are talking about 18 miles per gallon in the city and 29 miles per gallon on the highway. This engine is mated to a 6-speed smooth shifting automatic transmission with a manual shift option built in China. GM feels good about the Regal based its 5-year/100,000 mile power train limited warranty. A 4- year/50,000 mile bumper-tobumper warranty as well.
from the Insurance Institute for highway safety. With a 6-month onstar directions and connections with automatic crash response and turn by turn navigation you know you are covered. Loaded with a long list of safety features the Regal has airbags frontal and side impact thorax driver and front passenger. There are head curtain side outboard front and rear occupants. The air bag sensing system on the passenger knows when the seat is occupied. Antilocking brakes came in handy because you know I was letting
the hammer down. Daytime running lamps rounds out some of the vehicle’s safety features. Inside the new Regal you are treated to an outstandingly newwave European styling with all the curves. The leather wrapped steering wheel with three-spoke sport styling with audio controls adds to the flare of the interior. When it comes to the instrument cluster once again Buick stepped up to the plate and smacked a home run!
seats with 4-way lumbar you can easily get comfortable while behind the wheel. Even back seat riders and enjoy at 60/40 split folding seatback. Sounds came in handy with an optional Premium 9-speaker system with audio system with navigation and single CD/DVD player. Once you go for a ride in the new Regal you come to understand our test car came to more than 34 grand!
With power adjustable 8-way
Let me say as we test drove the vehicle and found the public really had their eyes on this Regal. The overall styling automatically gets your attention. The 2010 model was also voted Top Safety Pick Award winner The new 2011 Buick Regal CXL Turbo

Just think a few years ago Toyota Motor Sales was noted for producing mid-size and small vehicle that had great lasting value. Fact is they are still doing that but over the past 22 years they have really stepped up their share of the market in the luxury class. That brings us to the new 2011 Lexus GX 460 we tested the other week. To begin with it is powered by a powerful 4.6 liter 301 HP 32-valve V8 engine with dual VVT-I and mated to a 6speed sequential shift electronically controlled automatic transmission. This combination produces 15 miles per gallon in the city and 20 miles per gallon on the highway. All this is enhanced by a fulltime 4WD with torsen limited slip center differential with electronic locking feature providing superior take offs for an SUV. The ride is smoothening by a 4link lateral rod rear suspension and front independent double wishbone suspension. The Kinetic Dynamic suspension system works well even on rough roads. Four wheel disc brakes stops the GX 460 very well and the overall feel is more car like than like that of a truck. Setting a new standard when it comes to safety Lexus has always been at the top of the class when it comes to safety. Fact is the dual-stage front air bags, front seat mounted side air bags and even front knee airbags are industry leading features. There are second row outboard

When you sit inside the new GX 460 you are like in automobile heaven with leather trimmed interior with Lexus memory seats steering wheel and outside mirror setting. Cruise controls are placed inside the leather wrapped steering wheel. Driver and front passenger seat is 10way with power and are heated and ventilated. When you throw in the reclining, sliding 60/40 split middle row seat and the 50/50 split third row seat you know some thoughts went to the building of this product. One-touch open and close power tilt and slide moon roof helps riders of this vehicle have contact with nature and still remain in luxury. LEXUS RX 350 ROLLING RIGHT ALONG IN 2011 By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Liberty, Texas-While driving over to the country to sign up for some airtime on KHSN 99.9 radio with the Crown Prince we suddenly realized the RX 350 was the first of the newly styled SUV. For years it sort of stood along as many other automakers would come up with something to try and compete with it. The record shows this product has gotten better and better with each upgrade. Powered by a 3.5 Liter 275 horse-powered four cam 24-valve V6 engine the new Lexus will get up and boogie with the best in class. This engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with Snow mode. Good numbers at 18 miles per gallon city and 25 miles per gallon on the highway. Electric power rack and pinion steering makes handling a thrill while 4-wheel power assisted ventilated front and solid rear disc brakes brings this unit to a smooth and safe stop. Safety is at a premium for this model with dual advanced front airbags, driver and passenger knee airbags, plus front and rear seat mounted side curtains. There’s a energy Managing crumple zones, side door beams and a vehicle theft-deterrent system. One of the things that have always excited me about the RX models is the fact you are driving a crossover vehicle and it sits high like a truck to drives like a car. Let us not forget this is a Lexus now so luxury goes with the word. The Premium audio sys-
tem, automatic sound levellizer (ASL) and in-dash single feed 6Disc CD auto changer with an in glass antenna makes you feel like you are in a concert hall. The optional Mark Levinson Premium South cranked out through 15 speakers and navigation system with backup camera covers everything. Equipped with Navi Traffic and Nav weather plus voice command Lexus enform with one year destination, XM Satellite radio Inside you are truly blessed when you take into consideration the luxurious layout gives you a good feeling right off the bat. Genuine wood interior trim continues to set the RX 350 apart from others in its class. Grabbing a hold of the 3-spoke leather wrapped steering wheel know you are in control. From time to time going down highway 90 we noticed the speed we were going because the vehicle rides so quiet and smooth. Heights adjusting 10-way driver and front passenger seats get you in the right position to enjoy your ride. Warranties for the Lexus RX 350 are 4-year/50,000 miles basic coverage and a 5year/70,000 mile power train warranty with 6 year/unlimited mile corrosion perforation warranty. In closing please allow me to add there are far too many standard features on the RX to go through them all but such as rear black privacy glass with integrated rear spoiler to name a couple.

VETERAN OF THE MONTH – ERNEST SHAW By John Engel A King-Size View At 83 Ernest Shaw lives in his comfortable south side home with a host of photos and memories. These are the result of a lifetime of achievement and accomplishment.
Born in 1926, Ernest grew up on a farm in Terrell and plowed the fields with a mule on his grandfather’s farm. A 1944 graduate of Burnett High School, Ernest joined the Army in April of 1945 Ernest in San Antonio. He completed basic training at the Army Air Corps Base in Wichita Falls, Texas (later named Sheppard Air Force Base). From there, Shaw was sent to Clovis, New Mexico where he rose to the rank of Sergeant. He reenlisted to see the world and get transferred from Clovis. He made the train trip to New York which was his first journey across the country. From New York he was sent to Manila where he served the rest of World War II. After the war he applied to Tuskegee College in Alabama. He graduated with a degree in
agronomy. From there, Ernest went to Rutgers University to receive his Masters Degree.
In 1949, he was called up and sent to Fort Benning, Georgia where he was placed in an accelerated program that was designed to create minority platoon leaders. As the Korean War heated up, the Army was trying to integrate and place more African Americans in leadership roles. In 1949 Ernest was given his commission at Fort Hood. His unit the 3rd Platoon, 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Division was a diverse group including Koreans, African Americans, Hispanics and Caucasians. The third Platoon spent most of it’s time near Heart Break Ridge just north of the 38th parallel. During the war, his unit saw constant battle and suffered heavy losses. During it all, Shaw commanded the respect of his men and earned their trust. The Army awards the Silver Star to soldiers that serve in action against the enemy of the United Sates and distinguishes himself or herself by extraordinary heroism. On November 1, 1951,
Ernest Shaw was recognized for his service to his country and received the Silver Star. This was one of the first Silver Stars issued to an African American serviceman during the Korean War. His commendation reads “For Gallantry in Action” for leading his men in numerous patrols and working at the front line under pressure. Like most great men, Shaw is more interested in sharing the story of the men that did not come home than talking about himself.
After graduating from college, Ernest spent fours years in Africa working as an agronomist. (An agronomist teaches farming, crops and soil.) In Lyberia he taught native Africans how to grow more coffee on their farms. In fact, one of his students was James Sirleaf, former wife of current Lyberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. When he returned to the States, Ernest began his domestic career as a County Agricultural Agent, teaching farmers in South Texas how to grow better crops. Shaw cites George Washington Carver as one of his heroes and believes that he is more scientist than
solider, a point that is hard to argue with. Carver was in a large part responsible for the Agricutrual Extenstion Service system in our Country. The Agricultural Extention Services evolved from the Land Grant Colleges. The Morrill Act of 1862 (Justin Morrill, Vermont during the Lincon administration) established the land grant universities to teach agriculture, science and engineering. In Texas, two schools were established. Texas A & M in Bryan and Prairie View A & M in Prairrie View. As the time all schools were segregated, Prairrie View was established to
allow African Ameericans separate but equal opportunity. His current interest is still educational. Ernest is working on a “Food For Fuel” project to educate people on how the various food groups are converted into fuel to power our bodies. Even in his 80’s Shaw has lost nothinng. Sharp as ever and proud of every accomplishment in his life. Ernest Shaw, I salute you and thank you for your service to uur country and for your many years of service to Texas as an Agricutlural Agent.

THE LIBRARY Have you been to the library lately? My childhood memories of our library include musty books, elderly ladies going “SHHHHHHHH” all the time and people sitting around reading. Well, to paraphrase; “This isn’t your father’s library.”
Today there are a huge number of things you can do at the library. In fact, with out technology, there are a number of things you can do at the library without ever going to the library. First, there is the Central Library, which is downtown at 500 McKinney. This location has hours seven days a week! Then there are three Special Collection libraries. This includes the Houston Metropolitan Research Center, The Clayton Center for Genealogical Research and The African American Library. Additionally, the system includes four regional libraries, 31 neighborhood libraries, four express libraries, one mobile express library and one satellite library located in the Children’s Museum. That’s a lot of libraries. Almost all of the library locations offer free WiFi service. This is good to know if you want to download books to your computer or wireless device (more on that later). Of course, all library locations offer books to loan. A library card is free to Houston residents. You will need to provide identification and proof of residency. A driver’s license or school ID card will do just fine.
Books are just the tip of the learning iceberg, however. The library offers free “Ask a Librarian” reference services, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Brief answers to factual questions will be provided. You can access this service through the web site, by phone or email. (NOTE: Phone service is only available during specified hours.) Students can use the “Ask a Tutor” service to get free homework help. This service is available to students from Kindergarten trough adult education. You can get help with writing a term paper or completing your GED. The Access Center at the Central Library offers many services for visually and hearing impaired persons. You can listen to digital audio books, read large print books, use magnifiers to enlarge print on normal books and utilize many other services. Using the net library services you can download over 30,000 books. E-books can be downloaded and read on your Nook, iPad, computer or other digital reader. You can also download audio books and load them on your iPod or other MP3 player. Using the WiFi services in the library, you can download you media at the library and transfer it to your device. Early literacy programs are available at several locations. These programs encourage parents to read with their young
children to teach literary skills to preschoolers and toddlers. For Spanish speaking families, the Para los ninos (For the Children) program can help parents and children. Para los niños is funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the Powell Foundation and Fiesta. The Houston Metropolitan Research Center (HMRC) is located in the old library building next to the Central Branch. It is home to a vast collection of local and Texas historical documents. Information can be located in person or by phone and reproductive service is available. The African American Library is located in the Gregory School. This was the first African American public school in Houston. It is located in the historic Freedman’s Town district at 1300 Victor. Here you will find exhibits, photos and documents that are available to preserve the history and culture of the African American community.
Maps, CC-ROMS and electronic catalog terminals are available to assist you in your research. Another service available at the Central Library and at many braches is microfiche copies of our local daily newspapers. This includes both the Chronicle and Post. I needed to look up an obituary for a person that died in 1984. I found the obit and s related story in both papers. It took about fifteen minutes. In order to use many of the advanced services of the library system, you will need to get a Power Card. You must get your card at any branch by applying in person. Your card will allow you to check out up to 50 items
Page 7
at once. Certain items have different limits such as DVDS. You can only check out five at a time. Your card is valid for three years and can be renewed in person if you are still a resident and have less than $10.00 in outstanding fines. Most items are checked out for a period of two weeks and can be renewed for two more periods of two weeks each for a total of six weeks. To get started, you need to visit your nearest library branch. If you do not know where it is, call 832-393-1300 for information. You can also log on to the Library’s web site at www.houstonlibrary.org .
The Clayton Center for Genealogical Research, located at 8300 Caroline, is an excellent resource for people trying to establish their family history.

SINGING GREAT CLAY HAMMOND PASSES ON
By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Humble, Texas-In 2009 while promoting the Fiesta Memorial Weekend Free Music Festival a fellow came up to me and said we needed to talk. That fellow was Clayton Hammond Jr. one of the all-time great singer. We exchanged phone numbers and talked once a twice on the phone. I found out later he was a friend of the Soul and Blues Master Ernie Johnson who was doing a tribute to Otis Redding that weekend. Talking back and forth we found out more and more about Clay Hammond and his outstanding voice. On the first week in February Johnson called me from Dallas as he was blocked in with snow and freezing weather, to go to the bedside of Hammond who was in his last days at M.D. Anderson Cancer Hospital. So Dr. Victor Keys and I made the trip to the south side of town and visited with family all the way up to 3 hours before he actually passed away Friday February 4th. THE CLAY HAMMOND STORY Born on June 23, 1936 to Ruby Carter-Hammond and Clayton Hammond senior in Groesbeck
Texas, Clay was the eldest of 8 children. At an early age he developed a special love for his family shouldered a lot of responsibility as well. Hammond is survived by five children Clarence Sims, Mario Westbrook, Michael Hammond, Sammy Hammond and Raushan Hammond, plus Sisters Alice Faye Thornton, Jessica Mae Hughey and Shirley Storey. A Brother Walter Hammond, fourteen grandchildren and great grand children. His extended family of fiancée Kathleen Mosby, new found daughter Rhonda Davis, granddaughter Danielle Davis and grandsons Samuel and Travis Davis as well as a host of nieces, nephews and cousins and a dear friend Dennis Roberts. Starting out at the tender age of 10 Hammond clearly was blessed with God given talents as a vocalist. He organized a gospel quartet, The Friendly Five. As he crew into his teen years he became a member of the Flowers of Joy Gospel group and by the age of 17 he was a member of the Original Mighty Clouds of Joy. Clay went on to perform as a member of the Drifters and the Rivingtons.
Story Hammond was also noted as a very good song writer. He wrote the hit song “Part Time Love” it was performed by the late Little Johnny Taylor and spent 15 weeks on the top charts. Fact is Hammond continued to draw royalties on that song the rest of his life. The song did so well it was recorded by the likes of Isaac Hayes and Ann Peoples. All during the 60s and 70s Hammond recorded on several labels including Kent, Galaxy, Liberty , Ronn, Duo Disc, Hit Parade, BMI, and his very own label Raushan Records.
master piece call “In God’s Hand” with the hit song “God is Coming” and many more. Hammond at the end went back to his roots. Despite the fact his last four years were filled with pain, family members and close friend said they never heard him complain, not even once. We at A King-size View feel it was an honor to attend the services of this legend. It’s unbelievable they actually allowed me to help carry his coffin! In talking with Original Mighty Clouds members Rev. Hollis Johnson
and Devers “Boo” Williams we learned a lot about the group. It was also a pleasure in meeting Pastor Jarryl L. Roberts and his wife Evangelist Juanita Roberts. We also had a chance to chat with the legendary Joe Ligon by phone thanks to Ernie Johnson. In closing we want to thank Kathy Mosby for been such a great host for the rest of the family and making everyone feel at home. We even ran into KCOH Radio Great Don Samuel and his wife (Marilyn) at the services.
As time went on Hammond spent time performing as a solo act and traveled aboard for several shows. Fact is a resent as the summer of 2010 he performed at the Poretta Soul Festival in Poretta Terme, Italy. After his health continued to fail him he managed to do his last
But that was only part of the

BLUES LEGEND MARVIN SEASE LEAVES MARK By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Vicksburg, Mississippi-The legendary Marvin “Candy licker” Sease 64, died of complication by pneumonia on Tuesday February 8, 2011 at the River Region Medical Center. Sease had been ill for a while and the pneumonia was just more than his body could stand. Just days before his 65th birthday, Sease leaves to mourn a great following of special brand of music. Born February 16, 1946 in Blacksville, South Carolina Sease got his start with the gospel group called Five Gospel Crowns. He and three of his brothers moved to New York and spent time performing at Clubs in Brooklyn, New York but times were tough. But Marvin was well prepared for the hard times and began making a name for himself after the band broke up by singing at night clubs and bars. It was then he developed his style of sexual
explicit songs talking about love making.
continued to pay the bills for him.
His big break came in 1987 when he wrote a song called Candy Licker and some radio stations would not play the song because of its sexual explicit lyrics. But the song went well and still managed to reach number 14 on the Billboards R & B charts. Fact is people went out and bought the song just to see what he was saying. Those in the radio business who knew a hit when they saw one bleeped out the words and still kept the song in their rotations. All things considered Sease recorded over 20 albums and had moderate success with other songs such as Ghetto Man and Double Cross to name a few. Malaco, Jive Records and Mercury Records are a few companies Sease went on to record for. Placed in the class with Denise LaSalle and Theotis Ealey for his sexual tones to his songs, Marvin still managed to get booked and his adult rated lyrics
Longtime friend Ernie Johnson the Soul and Blues Master from Dallas, Texas was deeply sadden by Marvin’s passing. “It’s rough on me King, Pat (Butler) called with the news and after Clay Hammond died I don’t know how to handle Marvin going in”. Johnson pulled himself together to come to Houston three days from the day they buried Sease to put on a show in the 16th

looking at the success of an artist and Marvin Sease certainly made his mark on the industry. It took a lot of courage to record a song like “Candy Licker” and Marvin will be remembered for his courage and some good down home blues also.

But the expression showed on his face Clay Hammond and Marvin Sease were still on his mind. The only advice we could give Johnson is to be strong because God knows best. Furthermore he is still healthy and going strong and able to do a tribute to those who have gone on. The legendary Marvin “Candy Licker” Sease

things are going well for him and his family. “I’m very proud of the way my family and I are trying to be somebody, be it through sports or academics, I want to make a positive impact on my community”.
As we talked more with McCain we learned he feels Barack Obama becoming our country’s first African American President goes to show opportunities are opening up for everyone. “This shows people are coming together and getting more done”. On the subject of school changes at Alief Middle school Ken says he would change the dress code and add more fund raising activities to assist in the operation of the school. “I would also create a student committee to assist in the selection of our new teachers”. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
The high jumping player went on to say they feel good to go10-0 and they have been together for a long time. “Sir we won the city championship as freshmen and the Junior varsity title in our district so this is just another step in getting to our goal”.
RODERICK SMITH - MADISON With a perfect district 20-5A mark setting and waiting, Roderick Smith made a motion to guard Clarence Shelvin and grabbed the pass and slammed it down hard. The two points plus the foul shot gave the Marlins a 7 point lead and seal the victory over Lamar. The forward /center said Lamar put up a good fight our plan was to get to them before they get past the half court line. “But once I got into
foul trouble I tried to stay on the court and once they had us beat we didn’t want to foul and give them 3 point plays”. After playing Yates close the Marlins felt they could play with anyone. “Well sir I know a couple of players on Yates squad and when we battled them to a close game we felt we could play slow down or fast past and remain competitive”.

Rattling the rim for 22 points to lead his team to the win over Lamar for the unbeaten district finale, Smith is the key to the Marlins playoff feature. “We feel the sky is the limit as to how far we can go if we stay focus and listen to our coaches”. Beating the Mustangs of Memorial high school 62-59 in overtime sends the Marlins into the area round of the playoffs.

L.C. COOKE ENJOYED TRIP TO HOUSTON FOR FIESTA FREE MUSIC FESTIVAL HONORING SAM COOKE By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Mr. L.C. Cooke made his first trip to Houston, Texas in nearly 35 years and enjoyed every moment of it. Cooke brought to town by Fiesta and King Arthur’s Productions for the Fiesta 16th Annual Black History Celebration. The tribute to Sam Cooke was done by legendary Soul and Blues Master Ernie Johnson out of Dallas, Texas. L.C. Cooke accompanied by his business manager David Washington made the trip via 747 Southwest Airlines flight out of Chicago on Friday morning and graced our city until late Sunday evening. All during that time Cooke made friends and left the city with a smile on his face. Fact is he told me it was a pleasure to visit the Fiesta store 22 and chat with the manager Curtis Thompson and all the people made him and Washington feel right at home. “The last time I was treated this good was when I was on the road with Sam (Cooke) in the early 60s”. Cooke went on to thank Ernie Johnson for taking the time and doing a great job on the songs Sam Cooke made
famous. It should also be noted taht L.C. had hits of his own, including the smash “Let me down easy”. He also managed several acts, including Millie Jackson. In closing Cooke thanked us brin-
ing him to town and promise to travel anywhere in the country to honor his legendary brother with us with Ernie Johnson doing the singing. David Washington also thanked us for the trip and enjoyed himself very much.

16TH ANNUAL FIESTA FREE MUSIC FESTIVAL PAID TRIBUTE TO THE LATE-GREAT SAM COOKE By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View On a perfect day of 69 degrees with a slight breeze the city of Houston was treated to an outstanding Fiesta Free Music Festival. It was the 16th Annual Fiesta Free Music Festival and Black History Celebration. Soul and Blues legend Ernie Johnson led the acts with a tribute to the late great Sam Cooke. Making the trip to Houston for the show was none other than the legendary L.C. Cooke, the brother of the late-great Sam Cooke. Making the trip with his business manager David Washington Cooke graced the city of Houston for the better part of 3 days. It was very special for King Arthur’s Productions to be involved with Fiesta Mart Inc. in promoting the show. We want to thank radio stations KCOH AM 1430 AM, KTSU 90.9 FM and KHSN 99.9 FM for helping us get the word out. Reports are this was the best attended event in the 16 years history of the
event. The day started as Stevie “Good Times” T of KCOH AM 1430 opened the program at 12.30PM sharp. Leading the audience in prayer was Kareem Jackson of the Gospel group Connections. All people who came early got a personal welcome from Store 22 manager Curtis Thompson. Curtis enjoyed hosting the event and looks forward to it each year. That was followed by 35 minutes from the World Renown Lady Beatrice Ward and the Angelic Voices. What a job as they are now into their 29 year of performing and are truly and outstanding group to say the least. Next up was the up and coming gospel group Connections featuring Rev. Kareem Jackson and they really rocked the house and got people moving to the spirit. Houston own Shonnie Murrell was up next and did some great
rendition of the group Rufus as well as some of her very own hits. Murrell is a Sharpstown graduate who went on to attend Grambling State University. Having spent one year on a TV series on BET, Shonnie and good performances go hand and hand. It was our first time booking her and you can rest assured it won’t be the last. The ever present Studewood Cobras Cheerleaders were on hand and did their routines to the great Sam Cooke hit “Shake”. It was time for the Zydeco Sensation Guyland Leday and he turned it out with her version of Sam Cooke’s mega hit “Having a Party”. Plus you know he has such hits as “Empty Wagon Makes a lot of Noise” and many more. Leday turned 13 this year and still is making a name for himself as he sings more to go along with his world class accordion playing. We want to comment his family and manager Robby Robinson on working well with him. By that time the Prairie View Black Foxes were ready to grace the ground as they performed. Under the leadership of Dr. Margaret Sherrod you know the Black Foxes turned some heads. Once again the Studewood Cobras took to the stage and gathered some attention. If you recall the Cobras are headed into their 34th year and look forward
David Washington, L.C. Cooke and King Arthur for a job well done. 16TH ANNUAL FIESTA FREE MUSIC FESTIVAL PAID TRIBUTE TO THE LATE-GREAT SAM COOKE As the evening went on it was time to show our appreciation for Mr. L.C. Cooke for making the trip to Houston. Cooke told the audience he wanted to thank Fiesta and King Arthur’s Productions for bringing him to Houston for the first time in more than 35 years. As he took to the mike he told the people God gave him the greatest gift in the world his brother the late great Sam Cooke. It’s been nearly 25 years since L.C. Cooke sang a song, but the pilot on the 747 Southwest Airlines flight leaving Chicago noticed his name on the passenger list and asked him to sing one of Sam’s songs while they waited to take off. It was then L.C. Cooke sang a song and felt good about his trip to Houston. One day after making back to Chicago, L.C. Cooke gave me a call just to say thank you one more time. “I thoroughly enjoyed my stay in Houston and you and Fiesta take care of business, my manage David Washington and I want you to know we will travel all over the world with you and Ernie Johnson if you want us to”. He thanked us for helping keep the name of Sam Cooke alive and well. With that said L. C. Cooke made his way to his seat with people gathered all around him and taking pictures with him all the evening long. The moment of the hour came as the 6 feet 5 inch Ernie Johnson took to the stage with his hot and steamy band playing “Rome Wasn’t built in a day”. Johnson continued with Wonderful World and Having A Party before shaking up the house with “A Change Gonna Come”. After going through 5 Sam Cooke songs, Johnson got into “Good Thawg Man” and several of his very own hits much to the delight of the crowd. Even as the sun set Johnson was still walk-
ing all through the crowd and singing “Dreams to Remember” an Otis Redding tune he recorded some years ago. People who seen him for the first time have been calling us talking about what a performer he is.

ERNIE JOHNSON WINDS UP HOUSTON TRIP WITH A VISIT TO GEORGE FOREMAN’S CHURCH By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Legendary Soul and Blues Master Ernie Johnson had a busy weekend in February this year. Continuing his Tribute to legends who have gone on, this time around Johnson was in town for the16th Annual Fiesta Free Music Festival. But he rose early Sunday Morning to sing his hit gospel song “Reaching Out” for the people who attend Church services of the Legendary George Foreman. Pat Butler who just returned to Houston from handling the funeral services for the late Marvin Sease also attended the services. The church group, Barjona, opened up the services. Thanks to Quincy Harris of Waco, Texas
along with Michael Harris of KCOH AM 1430 the arrangements were made for Johnson to sing there. “It was great because I hadn’t seen George Foreman in years and certainly enjoyed his message”. Johnson went on to say it was like icing on a cake to visit with Foreman before he had lunch and left for Dallas. It was great to hear Ernie Johnson and Natalie Foreman singing one after the other. Two great talents with two great voices! Only the good Lord could have hooked them up. The Church group did a wonderful job as well singing songs that warmed the heart.
you later on in life. Just like always Foreman delivers his message and uses his very own life experiences to drive his point home. Just before the close of services George lead off on a song about Lord make me a Fishman so I can reel in a sinner and Natalie took over the song and truly made the day.
and had some good soul food for lunch. It was great to visit with Floyd Butler because it had been a while since we had talked. By that time we had checked L. C. Cooke and his business Manager David Washington out of the Hilton Hotel and he was able to
join along with Michael Harris and his wife as Cooke talked about his brother Sam Cooke. Funny how time flies when you are having fun, before you knew it, it was time to take Cooke and Washington back to the airport.

WHAT IS TRUTH? THE APPOINTMENTS Dear reader again, the purpose of these articles is to seek the TRUTH according to THE WORD, thereby exposing ERROR, for the purpose of saving our souls. We believe this is best done by definitions and the preponderance of scriptures; which is having superior weight, force, importance, or influence of scripture. Again we believe this allows SCRIPTURE to INTERPRET SCRIPTURE, thereby allowing a better understanding on that topic. Again, thank you so much for your interest in the WORD of TRUTH; GRACE and SALVATION; John 17:17-21; Acts 20:29-32; James1:21-25. After all it is our MAP to HEAVEN!
In our life time there are many appointments made, some we are on time for and others we are late. Some of these appointments we keep and others we cancel. According to scripture there are two appointments that mankind MUST keep, that is DEATH, and after death the JUDGMENT. We will not be late for these, nor can they be canceled. In this study we will find that even beast must keep one of these appointments, and that is death. We will also learn in what state we are in, in death, according to scripture, in other words; what do we know, who do we know, what do we see and hear, in the grave . The scriptural definition of death (James 2:26), What happens to the soul after death, according to the TRUTH (John17:17), will be made clear in this study. We will also find information pertaining to what will be brought into judgment, and the two choices given, according to the truth. Please get your bibles and follow this study! THE APPOI TME TS: Heb 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: Heb 9:27 ... as it is appointed unto men once to die. Gen 3:19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. 2Sam 14:14 For we must needs die, and are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither doth God respect any person: yet doth he devise means, that his banished be not expelled from him. Job 7:7 O remember that my life is wind: mine eye shall no more see good. 8 The eye of
him that hath seen me shall see me no more: thine eyes are upon me, and I am not. 9 As the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away: so he that goeth down to the grave shall come up no more. 10 He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him any more. Job 14:5 Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;
Job 14:10 But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he? 11 As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up: 12 So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.(KJV) Ps 89:48 What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death? shall he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave? Selah. Eccl 3:19 For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity. 20 All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again. 21 Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth? 22 Wherefore I perceive that there is nothing better, than that a man should rejoice in his own works; for that is his portion: for who shall bring him to see what shall be after him? Eccl 8:6 Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man is great upon him. 7 For he knoweth not that which shall be: for who can tell him when it shall be? 8 There is no man (1)that hath power over the spirit (2)to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no (3)discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.(KJV) Definitions: (1)that hath power-7989 shalliyt (shal-leet’); from 7980; potent; concretely, a prince or warrior, having mastery, domineering, master a) having mastery; ruler (substantive) b) domineering, imperious: KJV— governor, mighty, that hath power, ruler. (2)to retain-3607 kala’ (kawlaw’); a primitive root; to
restrict, by act (hold back or in) or word (prohibit): KJV— finish, forbid, keep (back), refrain, restrain, retain, shut up, be stayed, withhold.
(3)NO discharge-4917 mishlachath (mish-lakh’-ath); feminine of 4916; a mission, i.e. (abstractly) and favorable) release, or (concretely and unfavorable) an army, sending away, deputation: KJV— discharge, sending. Eccl 9:5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. 6 Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they anymore a (1)portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun. Definition: (1)portion-2506 cheleq (khay’lek); from 2505; properly, smoothness (of the tongue); also an allotment: KJV— flattery, inheritance, part, X partake, portion. Eccl 9:10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor (1)device, nor (2)knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest. 11 I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all. 12 For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them. Definitions: (1)device-2808 cheshbown (khesh-bone’); from 2803; properly, contrivance; by implication, intelligence: KJV— account, device, reason. (2)knowledge-1847 da` athknowledge a) knowledge, perception, skill b) discernment, understanding, wisdom Eccl 12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. 8 Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity.(KJV) James 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.(KJV) James 4:13 Go to now, ye that
say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: 14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. 15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.(KJV) 1 Pet 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. 24 For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: 25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.(KJV) Heb 9:27 ... but after this the iudgment:
Eccl 11:9 Rejoice, 0 young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment. 10 Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity. Eccl 12:14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil. Matt 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. 15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. see also Luke 13:23-24 Matt 7:21 ot every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. 24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a
rock: 25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. 26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: 27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.(KJV) Matt 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. .....see also Luke 12:5 (KJV)
Luke 9:22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day. 23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him (1)deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. 24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. 25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? 26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels.(KJV) Definition: (1)deny himself-720 arneomai (ar-neh’-om-ahee); (as a negative particle) and the middle voice of 4483; to contradict, i.e. disavow, reject, abnegate: KJV— deny, refuse; a) to disregard one’s own interests, b) to act entirely unlike himself. John 5 :26 For as the Father hath life in himself: so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself, 27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man. 28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

WHAT IS TRUTH? THE APPOINTMENTS Rom 2: 5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; 6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds: 7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: 8 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, 9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;
Rom 14:11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. 12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God. 2 Cor 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. 11 Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God: and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences. Heb 10:30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.(KJV) 1 Pet 4:12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: 13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s (1)sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. 14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified. 15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men’s matters. 16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. 17 For the time is come that judgment must
begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? 18 And if the (2)righteous (3)scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear? 19 Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.(KJV)

This is the second death. 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. Rev 13:9 If any man have an ear, let him hear.(KJV) Are we ready for the two appointments, death and the judgment? Are we enjoying ourselves, having a good time in this world? Is life good, and are we comfortable? If our answer is yes then let read what Jesus and his apostles say about the love of life in this world. Then maybe we need to examine ourselves to see if we are in the faith, not a faith. We believe that through the preponderance of scripture and definitions on a topic, better allows one the opportunity of understanding that topic; as we search for the TRUTH. TO THOSE ON THE OUTSIDE DEAR SINNER HEED THIS CALL PRECIOUS is Time. Therefore while you have time, use it to learn and do Gods Commandments for at the end of life is pay time and your pay will be according as your work has been. You will find in 2 Corinthians 5:10 the following: “For we must all appear before the judgement seat of Christ, that everyone may recive the things done in his body according to that he hath done, whether it be good or evil.” You will find in John 15:14. “Ye are my friends if ye do whatsoever I command you.” Solomon said in Proverbs 1:5 “A wise man will hear and will increase learning, and a man of understanding will attain unto wise counsel.” How shall we escape if we neglect to great Salvation: Hebrew 2:1-3 Salvation is to be worked out. GIRLS BASKETBALL REPORT-BEAUMONT OZEN AND ALIEF ELSIK WIN GIRLS REGION THREE TITLES By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View The Lady Panthers of Beaumont Ozen edged the Huntsville Hornets for the class 4A region III title at the Campbell Center 58-57. The game was a thriller as Huntsville fought from being down by as many as 8 points to make a game of it. With her team trailing by one point Sanqueisha Rawls got an offensive rebound and was fouled.
She calmly made both free throws and gave her team a lead with less than a minute to go. After two missed opportunities Rawls was back at the line and missed both free throws but the Lady Hornets couldn’t get off a good shot at the end. The win was the 36th against 4 defeats for Coach Tammy WalkerBrown and her staff of Tony Brown and Roma Locke. Defense was the difference in the game as Ozen girls put the clamps on Ronisha Major and Quayla Terry who are the leading scorers for the Hornets. Sophomore guard Nekia Jones
powered inside several times shaking up the Hornets defense with her strength and quickness. In the class 5A region III championship game the Lady Mustangs of North Shore high school galloped into the Campbell center with a full head of steam. But it quickly disappeared as the Elsik Lady Rams defense began to make things tough from the inside out. You see North Shore had just beaten the number 1 ranked team from Cypress Falls the night before, plus they had only 2 losses all season long. The Lady Rams of
Dad assistant coach Tony Brown-Daughter Bealoved Brown and Mom Head coach Tammy Walker-Brown of Beaumont Ozen
Elsik didn’t allow North Shore’s presence to bother them at all. Coach LaShawn Johnson girls held North Shore to only 38 points and won the game 48-38. Junior forward Crystal Porter connected on 9 of 12 shots and scored a game high 18 points. The outside shooting from Jazmine Ocanas another junior opened things up down low for Porter to do her thing. Furthermore it was a great defensive job by the Lady Rams as they held North Shore’s Courtney Williams to 4 of 19
from the field. While on the other end of the court Porter had her way because of the sagging defense North Shore decided to play. “I had so much room on my shots I was able to bank them off the glass”. It’s a fair observation to say they underestimated the range of the good shooting junior forward and it cost them in the end. We certainly want to wish both teams the best of luck as they represent region III in the state tournament in Austin this weekend.

MADISON MARLINS ROLLS TO DISTRICT 20-5A TITLE By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View The 2011 Madison Marlins boys basketball team rolled to a perfect 10-0 mark in district 20-5A. They became the first Marlin team to do so since the 1985 teams that won the state championship going 40-0. They beat Lamar 82-73 behind Roderick Smith 22 points and Daniel Wilson’s 17 point night. In the bi-district game against Memorial the Marlins trailed late and Jonathan Barefield nailed a trey to send the game into overtime. His teammate Dedrick Basile nailed another trey to give the Marlins the win at 62-59 sending them to the area round. For Coach Craig Maura this has
been a long time in coming and the Marlins have certainly worked hard to make to this point.
by Derick Basile did the trick. Two nights later the Marlins ran out to an 18 point lead only to
allow Nimitz to catch with them. But again they hang on and won the game 71-67 to advance to
the Elite 8 with a game schedule for Wednesday, March 2, 2011 versus Elsik.
Clarence Shelvin is the fifth starter and all these guys have played together for a long time. Winning at the freshman and Junior varsity level before winning it as seniors this team was due. Keep in this was the same thing that happened with the 1985 team. Other members on the team are Alvin Turner, Keyon Thomas, Ashton Richardson, Olatunde Idown, Darius Hargrove, Dewayne Jones and Denzel West. The Marlins edged Memorial in the opening round of the playoffs 61-57 in overtime. A trey

A RISING STAR TRAVELE JONES - TSU By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Standing at 6 feet 8 inches tall and weighing in at just over 200 pounds Travele Jones has made TSU a winner. The Tigers are now 13-1 in SWAC play and 15-10 overall under third year coach Tony Harvey. Jones a Cerritos JC transferred in his senior year and did what it took to make TSU a winner. Following another big win over Prairie View we talked with Jones about the success the TSU Men’s basketball program is having. “We came out a little sluggish in the first half and P.V. came with a couple traps we hadn’t seen, but we are a veteran team and we made some adjustment and get the victory”. The Tigers go with 5 seniors and they settled down followed the orders of Coach Harvey and took control of the game. “Our coaches really didn’t to say much at the half time because we knew we should have been playing better than we were from the start”. The school is spirit is very high
at TSU and Jones commented on that fact. “This is what it’s all about TSU football team has won the conference championship and we are next”. Fan support is also higher than it’s been since the first year under Ronnie Courtney nearly 10 years ago. In closing Jones said if the Tigers continue to work hard they feel they could reach the final four in Houston!
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK CLARENCE SHELVIN - MADISON The old saying goes the best defense is a good offense. Well that can apply to the 2011 Madison Marlins, because point guard Clarence Shelvin leads the way for his team. When he has the ball in his hands he does a wonderful job of getting it to their scorers so they can take care of business. What that does is allow their defense to trap and go after the ball on the made basket.
With a 9 point win over Lamar the Marlins move into the opening round of the playoffs. “We have got to stop turning the ball over so much and missing those open layups really hurt us”. In closing Shelvin added the team is jelling well and he had confidence in this team making a good run in the playoffs! The Marlins beat Memorial 62-59 in the bi-district round of the playoffs!
In the regular season finale against rival Lamar it was Shelvin who dished off to Roderick Smith for 22 points and to Daniel Wilson for 17 in the 9 points win. Reinjuring his hand against Lamar, Shelvin still manage to get the ball to Smith for a slam to break the game open. “Coach Maura told us Lamar was going to make a run so we just had to be ready for it”. The smooth point guard went on to say the team is taking it one game at a time but playing well against Yates and beating Kingwood really helped them build confidence.
COACH OF THE WEEK CRAIG MAURA - MADISON By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Working hard to keep his team together after one player went to Yates and one to Bellaire, Craig Maura kept his Marlins together. They went 10-0 and won the district championship with an unbeaten record for the first time since the 1985 team that went 40-0 and win the class 5A boys basketball championship. “We keep reminding our kids about that team and last year we actually had a banner up for them to look at and work hard toward accomplishing our goal”. That 40-0 team finished ranked number 8 in the country. Maura is assisted by former Marlin player Derrick Malone and Chris Lovelady use the inside play of Roderick Smith and Keyon Thomas. The team outstanding guard play by Clarence Shelvin, Daniel Wilson and Jonathan Barefield gives the team some balance.

We spoke with Maura about his team’s success this season. “It’s something we’ve waiting on for a long time, but no ways I can accept this by myself, but with my alumni and coaching staff and our team”. The team came together when they beat Jones on the road and played Yates close. “But when we got in the Kingwood tournament and we had to play Kingwood at 6.00PM after playing a game at 2.00”. As we talked more with Maura we talked about what was it like to beat Bellaire twice in district. ”Well a lot of people don’t realized we split with Bellaire year before last and came close twice last year”. Maura says Bellaire has a good program, Lamar and Westside always play the Marlins tough. He added it kind of strange to be the hunted rather than doing the hunting. The Marlins opened the Playoffs with a 62-59 overtime win over
Memorial and by the time you read this they could very well be into the Region III finals!

LADY PANTHERS CARRYING THE TORCH ON THE HILL By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View The Lady Panthers 2011 basketball teams, under first year coach Toyelle Wilson are right in the thick of things in the SWAC. But their men’s team is having their share of problems.
With the possibility of hosting a game upon the hill the Lady Panthers are really giving it a good shot. Wilson feels if her team can just have three people step up and play well they will have an outstanding chance at the SWAC title. Wilson is also concerned that her girls play well and make their free throws.
Sweeping TSU this time around the Panthers gained ground and whipped Arkansas Pine Bluff by scoring 99 points. It goes to show just how good they can be if things are clicking on all
cylinders. We certainly they have a good shot to get into the conference tournament and even win it and get into the NCAA.

A VIEW From The Stands By Ryan McGinty JACKSO , Miss. – The Prairie View A&M Lady Panther bowling team made history once again as they captured the SWAC Western Division Championship this past weekend as they participated at the SWAC East Bowling Roundup. By virtue of their performances at the past two SWAC Bowling Roundups, the Lady Panthers finished with a 17-11 SWAC mark and a 9-3 western division mark en route to clinching the division’s top seed at the SWAC Bowling Championship which begins March 4 in
Birmingham, Ala. “Our main goal was to win the division and we did that,” said head coach Glenn White. “We gave away some games during the roundup and that was frustrating but we overcame adversity and achieved our goal.” The Lady Panthers began the tourney on the right foot as they finished the first day with a 4-1 mark which included wins over Mississippi Valley State, Southern, Alabama State and

PRAIRIE VIEW A&M BOWLERS WIN SWAC WEST TITLE Texas Southern. Their lone loss came at the hands of Alabama A&M, who’s ranked nationally in the latest bowling coaches poll. On day two, the Lady Panthers had a setback as they posted a 2-3 record. The Lady Panthers opened with a loss to Jackson State but rebounded with wins versus Grambling State and Mississippi Valley. However, they closed out the afternoon on a down note with losses to Southern and Alabama A&M. During the roundup finale, the Lady Panthers concluded the meet with a 3-1 mark with wins over Alabama State, TSU and Grambling State. Their lone loss came at the hands of Jackson State. Sophomore Roonesia
Newsome led the way for Prairie View A&M with an average of 187.6 in 14 games bowled. Freshman Shanice Brown followed with a three-day average of 187.0 while senior Kristina Sadler averaged 183.3. Sadler also had the highest game of tourney for PV with a score of 229 against Grambling State. What makes Sunday’s achievement even sweeter is that Prairie View A&M did it with a limited roster. “Both roundups were tough as I only have five bowlers,” White said. “We couldn’t substitute like other teams as the majority had six to 10 bowlers. We had to bowl every game with little rest and several bowlers had injuries but we had to come together as a
team to get though. To win the division under those circumstances is quite an achievement for us.” The SWAC Tournament begins Friday, March 4 with qualifying rounds to determine seeding. Teams will then be placed in a double-elimination bracket in Baker play. Play continues on Saturday with teams competing in a best-of-seven Baker series. The championship will conclude on Sunday, March 6. The championship match, slated for 1 p.m., will be broadcast tapedelayed on ESPNU. Prairie View advanced to the finals of last year’s tournament versus Alabama A&M.

TSU MEN’S BASKETBALL PROGRAM HEADED TOWARD SWAC CHAMPIONSHIP By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View The TSU men’s basketball team is rolling right along with a sparkling 13-1 record with 4 games to go in SWAC competition. They are only 3 wins away from the regular season title and have swept PV this season. A road loss at Mississippi Valley State separates the Tigers from a perfect conference season. They avenged that loss to Valley on Saturday evening and with less than two weeks in the season are off to a 3 games lead with four games to go. Led by Travele Jones and Kevin Galloway the Tigers had been able to deal with whatever comes their way all season long. Freshman Lawrence JohnsonDanner has been a big plus with some long range shooting for the team and bid Daniel King has been a monster on the boards for the Tigers. While they have gotten some good quality play from Harrison Smith a Jones product came from UT over to TSU. Timothy Price strength on the boards has been a big plus for the Tigers and senior Justin Ray truly has given the Tigers a lift off the bench. Nicos Norris another freshman has delivered some quality minutes also. While Abduallah Boune, Brian Saunders, Keithtrick Denson and Vanderis Christis have all lend a hand to the team’s success.
On the other side the TSU women has had their problems and can’t seem to get it rolling.

The Way I See It
STEROID TESTING IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO
By BIG John Chandler I like many in the media wasn’t surprised regarding Texas Legislature’s push to test student-athletes in this state. In fact, I’m surprised it took this long to get to this point. I have heard the whispers in the press box about certain programs and the athletes rumored to be using performance-enhancing drugs. I have no knowledge regarding who is using what. But I’m not naïve enough not to believe it doesn’t exist in this state. The lure to become bigger, faster and stronger in the shortest amount of time necessary is very intoxicating to young athletes. Athletics is big time business. I can remember growing up in the 70’s, I was always was intrigued by the look of athletes from the former Soviet Union block of countries. Their athletes looked bigger and stronger than anyone else. The women in particular dwarfed everyone else around the globe. They just dominated the Olympics. There were whispers back then that something was wrong about those women. And as always the truth was exposed. The former country of East Germany was at that time light years ahead of the rest of the world regarding per-
Page 30
formance-enhancing drugs. Many of those athletes were used as guinea pigs regarding experiments with those drugs. The effects of long time steroid use are well documented. Heart and liver disease, all types of cancer and the inability to produce children are just a few illnesses as a result of using these drugs. Let’s face it folks young athletes are influenced by what adult athletes do. They’ve watched the spectacle of the congressional hearing involving Major League Baseball. The denials of Sammy Sosa, Mark McGuire, and Rafael Palmeriro and have course the continual sage concerning Barry Bonds. For years it was rumored about baseball players using steroids and baseball owners loving the revenues that the sport was raking in turned a deaf ear. I hated when the United States Congress got involved, but the truth needed to be told. Track and Filed athletes have been caught routinely and let’s not forget the rumors for years about Lance Armstrong. He along with Bonds has never tested positive for drug use. But with lure of millions of dollars at stake, athletes are always willing to pay for some type of human growth
hormone that current tests can detect. The time has come for testing. The adults in this state can’t allow the next generation to destroy their young bodies with substances that will eventually cause them harm to the physical health and like the case of the late Lyle Alzado perhaps death. I’m not trying to be an alarmist. If adults choose to use these substances, so be it. But as adults, we should protect minors and provide them with all the information that is available so once they become adults; they can make an informed choice. The University Interscholastic League should implement the following regarding steroid testing: All students participating in extra-curricular activities should be tested during the yearly physical prior to the beginning of the school year. All coaches should attend an eight hour in-service training regarding what steroids are, how used by athletes, the effects of use of the steroids and long-term issues regarding steroids. Athletes should attend an eighthour session also. Testing should be done at random during some point during the regular season. Testing should be done during the playoffs. Athletes testing positive must face a mandatory suspension and for seniors this should be included in their scholastic records. Athletes should face an automat-

ic one-year suspension if attending any college in the state of Texas. I understand that making the test part of the student’s scholastic record is risky and could be evasion of privacy issue that may on not be legal to do. But a university recruiting an athlete needs to be advised that that young athlete has tested positive for performance enhancing drugs. This is the unfortunately the world we live in. There should be a penalty for drug use. Our goal should be the safety of our young athletes. Let’s not kid we, adult athletes that want to cheat will always find a way to do. We have to be just as strong
in our response. Drug infused athletes will be caught and expect the punishment will be swift and strong. The best thing is to do it the right way. Now we face massive budget deficits and the possibility of eliminating drug testing altogether. There are many things in this state that could face the ax regarding funding. But for children, never should the safety face a budget ax. We as adult owe them the best care available. Drug testing should never be considered under review. That’s just the way I see it!
