KIA OPTIMA HYBRID We finally got behind the wheel of the all-new KIA Optima hybrid and found it to be simply exciting. To begin with the vehicle is powered by a 4.2 Liter 4-cylinder Hybrid engine and mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission and is equipped with motor driven power steering. All this rolls to the pavement on 17 inch performance tires circulating around a smoked alloy wheel.

This is a wonderful combination that leads to smooth shifting and outstanding handling. Let’s not forget this vehicle delivers 35 miles per gallon in the city and 40 miles per gallon on the highway.

When it comes time to listen to your favorite jams the KIA Optima has an Infinity Audio System with huge speakers right inside the front doors bringing back the way auto sounds use to be. AM/FM/CD/MP3 complete with Sirius satellite radio with free 3-month subscription and USB and auxiliary input jacks, throw in a navigation system with a backup camera to round out the technical advantages.

He just completed his run with the Studewood Cobras and let me tell you this kid got it. Playing both quarterback and linebacker on defense he once asked the

coaches to let him go in at running back and went on rushed for big yards to help his team win a game. That’s the kind of leadership you just don’t find every day. Word is he plans to attend Huffman Middle school in the Aldine school district.

Again let me tell the coach you had better take a look at this kid.

By the way he has a brother Warren Robinson who wears Jersey number 45 and this kid can block with the best I’ve seen on this level and he too is going to command some attention very soon. As you know they started out with the Studewood Cobras and lord knows I will be following them!

We will be the first to say they have come a very long ways. Fact is the new KIA Rio EX 5-door we tested the other day has some pretty good quality and priced at just over $18,000. To start with its powered by a 1.6 Liter gas direct injection four-cylinder engine and a six-speed automatic transmission with active eco system, A electric power steering

provides quality handling and 15-inch steel wheels with wheel covers gives it a pretty good look.

In days where buyers are looking to save every cent on their automobile purchase, the KIA Rio easily fits most budgets.

Our test vehicle came in a bright signal Red/Beige and a good color scheme to say the least.

But back to the economic value of the product 30 miles per gallon in the city and 40 miles per gallon on the highway is what people want to hear about.

Safety is a quality also found in the new KIA Rio with dual front advanced air bags and font seat mounted side air bags and a full-length side curtain air bags to name a couple. Anti-locking brakes and traction control with electronic stability control, Hill assist control and vehicle stability management helps to round out the safety features for the Rio.

Let us not forget that 90% of this vehicle parts come from Korea and the final assembly point is Korea so is the engine and transmission.

A NEW-LOOK MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER SPORT SE

By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View As part of Mitsubishi Motors revamping, the Outlander gets a new bold look for 2012. The front chrome grille reminds you of the bold fronts of the Dodges from the late 40s and it certainly meets the eye. The rest of the styling kind of blends in with the modern day trend, but it working for Mitsubishi as the company continues to see increase in sales.

Our test vehicle came in a mercury gray with black interior and we found it to be a pretty good looking match.

Power comes from a 2.0 Liter DOHC In-line four cylinder engine and it’s mated to a con-

tinuously variable transmission and meets the 50-state emission standards. This produces good scores on environmental performances including a four when it comes to smog score and a seven on global warming score.

Economically speaking the Outlander we tested was the two-wheel drive version and it still managed 25 MPG in the city and 31 MPG on the highway. Those are good numbers for a vehicle in this class with the power the engine provided.

Also important is the Mitsubishi 10-year/100,000 miles warranty for this power train and fiveyear/60,000 miles bumper to bumper along with fiveyear/unlimited roadside assistance warranty. The old saying goes you can tell how good the

product is by the amount and the length of the warranties that are being offered. If the saying is truth this product is darn good.

With a final assembly point in Okazaki, Japan and both the engine and transmission are built in Japan and fact is 94% of the parts for this vehicle come from Japan. Rated with a four-star for roll over but at the time of our test it was not rated for frontal and side crashes.

Inside the driver is greeted with a leather wrapped steering wheel and gear shift knob and steering wheel controls. The rear seats are 60/40 split fold-down.

Plenty of cargo space in the new Outlander adds to the quality of the vehicle that priced just fewer than $27,000.

Along the safety lines the new Outlander comes with performance handling four wheel disc anti-locking brakes electronic brakeforce distribution and four wheel independent suspension.

Advanced dual front air bags with front seat side mounted bags, driver knee bags and side curtain air bags as well as active stability control. If you’ve heard these features before you would know they are commonly found on more expensive luxury sport sedans.

Quality sounds come from a

710-watt Max Rockford Fosgate Punch premium sound system with nine-speakers including a 10 inch subwoofer. This system offers CD/MP3 in-dash head unit that includes Sirius satellite radio with three-month free service from the date of the sale.

The navigational system includes a rear camera and a music server to name a couple.

In closing please allow me to add the new Outlander also has steering wheel paddle shifter and super wide range HID headlamps.

By Dr. Victor Keys A King-Size View Our King-Size Mover and Shaker for the month of May is Brandon K. Reed. Currently, Brandon is a senior at George Washington Carver Magnet High School. He ranks in the top 25% of his class and has an overall GPA of 3.0 in the Engineering program at Carver High School.

Brandon has also been the Captain of the Eisenhower High School Boy’s Varsity Golf Team for the past four years. As a four year letterman in Golf, he has won the District 18 5A title for the past two years. Additionally, as a Medalist in Golf, he went on to Regional play this year and for the 2010-2011 school year. Brandon is great golfer and he loves the sport. During his high school years, he overcame many obstacles to become the student/athlete that he is now. He had major surgery,

while at the same time keeping up with the rigor of the studies, and maintaining one of the smoothest golf swings in the sport.

Brandon is a fierce competitor when it comes to golf. During this year’s district competition, Brandon was down a few strokes on the first day.

However, when the ball finally, rolled into the 18th hole; it was Brandon who won the tournament and made history at Aldine ISD’s Eisenhower High School.

He and Mariesha Keys, who also plays golf, became the first two golfers in the history of Eisenhower High School to earn medalist honors in their respective divisions. To close out his high school career, Brandon was selected as a finalist for the 2012 Touchdown Club ScholarAthlete Award.

Brandon will attend Hampton University in the fall and major

in Political Science. Who knows we may even see him on the PGA tour as a professional golfer in the future!!!

2012 CADILLAC ESCALADE ESV AWD-A TRUE CLASSIC SUV

By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View When you are ready for the big time, you think Cadillac and the Escalade ESV AWD Platinum is top of the line. The model we tested the other week came with a price tag of just over $85,000.

But let me tell you why and you can clearly see its well worth it.

This baby would make the late Roy Rogers trade in ‘Trigger’ for this model. Man we are speaking of the true Cowboy Cadillac and the Escalade has taken the SUV luxury buyers by storm.

Under the hood is proven 6.2 Liter V8 engine SFI with active fuel management and flex fuel capability. It’s mated to a powerful six-speed automatic transmission with transfer case AWD. Power hits the ground on Allseason 22 inch tires circulating around chromed aluminum wheels.

This translates into 403 horsepower at 5700 RPM and 417 lbFt of torque at 4300 RPM. As expected this models gets 13 miles per gallon in the city and 18 on the highway.

Escalade comes with a fouryear/50,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty and a fiveyear/100,000 mile power train warranty and a premium care maintenance five-year/100,000 courtesy transportation as well as roadside assistance. Throw in a 12-month On star direction and connections with automatic crash response, turn by turn navigation and onstar remote link.

From the outside you see those fancy looking headlamps with a slight bevel and the world famous Cadillac grille with the signature badge that dates back to the 40s. Even the starting price for this model is over $64,000.

Solidly built the Escalade Platinum ESV comes in at nearly 6,000 pounds so you get that

true safety weight feel.

Driver and passengers are treated to outstanding room and comfort. It starts with a multifunction gauge setup with wide readable numbers and plenty of options. We are talking about a vehicle that’s powered by a 1.5 Liter SOHC eight valve I-VTEC inline four cylinder engine. This 110 horse powered motor cranks out 44 miles per gallon no matter if it’s in the city or on the highway. The integrated motor assist has idle stop feature. A continuously variable transmission provides for smooth shifting and the front Macpherson struts suspension with rear multi-link suspension makes a full overall smooth ride. CAMP HOPE HOUSTON THE DISORDER: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health problem that can occur after someone goes through a traumatic event like war, assault, or disaster.

THE FACTS: One in three returning troops are diagnosed with serious PTSD symptoms.

Less than 40% will seek help!

In 2009, 245 soldiers killed themselves. On average, five active-duty troops attempt sui-

cide each day. Since 2006 1100 troops have taken their own lives.

For our troops returning from combat, two out of three marriages are failing. This is more than 27,000 in 2009 alone.

Houston, Texas is the third largest military community in the country (behind San Antonio and San Diego) and the second largest veterans’ community in the nation. In addition Houston is the second highest recruiting

WHAT IS BEI G DO E: To assist the victims of PTSD, the PTSD Foundation of America, a faith based charity based in Houston, is building group homes designed to provide transitional living for patients. While living in these facilities, the veterans will receive intense mentoring and counseling. There will also be interaction with Alcoholics Anonymous and Celebrate Recovery. Job training and relationship counseling will also be available. The Texas Veterans’ Commission will also come in to assist the residents as needed.

The founder of the PTSD Foundation of America, Gene Birdwell, raised the funds then purchased and donated the land just west of the Sam Houston Race Park. In addition to chairing the Foundation, Birdwell is president of Birdwell Construction a Houston based

company that employs over 150 people and specializes in wastewater and petrochemical construction projects.

I recently attended the opening of the first unit of Camp Hope Houston. Director of Operations and Pastor of the CrossBridge Church in Hockley, Texas, David Maulsby sat down and gave me an overview of the operation then led me on a quick tour. Built on five acres in Northwest Houston, this is the first of what they hope will be 20 units. This first house will be for individuals but the next house will be designed to house families. Each unit will be divided into four, two person bedrooms. With two bedrooms on each end of the house every bedroom will have its own bathroom and two bedrooms will share a kitchen.

These homes are beautiful. If you were not aware of their purpose you would think that they were ordinary residential units.

The purpose of this is to provide as normal a living environment as possible while residents work to overcome the problems that led them here. The floors are tiled and carpeted. The countertops are the finest available and all areas are fully equipped to make the stay as normal as possible. In fact, for the grand open-

On a perfect day for the meet the finals of the Class 5A were held before more than 14 thousand fans at the Mike Myers Stadium on the campus of University of TexasAustin and we were there. South Grand Prairie Abraham Hall lived up to his billing as one of the fastest guys in the country.

a time of 10.19 beating Katy’s Kyle Fulks who ran a 10.38 and Tremayne Acy of De Soto who ran a 10.41. It was Deante Gray of Houston Westside who got fourth and Ridge Jones of De Soto claimed fifth. Hall, bound for West Point, took command of the race and never let up.

Acy was one of the favorites suddenly became ill just before the race and still went on to get third.

Bermea, who had a big following all the way from down in the valley at Harlingen, lived up to his billings. “I try to concentrate on the first two hurdles and not look at the finish line”.

With plans of attending the University of California at Berkley this fall, Bremea feels good about the coaching staff there and they have the number one academic university in the nation.

De Soto had the services of Bryson Echols, Don’tre Wilson, Tremayne Acy and Ridge Jones on their team. De Soto went on to win the team title with 58 points.

In the mile relay it was Duncanville taking the top prize in a time of 3.14.38 with Tray Thompson, Julian Walker, Delon Bobb and Richard Gary doing their thing. Second place went to Converse Judson and Mansfield Timberview took third.

Tyler Lee’s Tyris Jefferson won the long jump with a leap of 2306.25 while Justin Jenkins of Dickinson took second place.

Craig Nowak of Cypress Woods took the 3200 meters in a time of 8.59.72 while Troy Taylor of Justin Northwest took second.

The boy’s 400 meter dash went to Aldrich Bailey of Mansfield Timberview in a time of 45.92 and Drevian Young of Aldine Nimitz got second in a time of 46.97 Lancaster won the boys Class 4A title with a total of 63 points beating out Fort Worth Southwest who tallied 46 points.

Boy’s Class 5A high jumping title went to Allex Austin of San Marcus with a 7 foot leap while Kaleb Moore of Cypress Fairbanks took second with a bounce of 6 feet 11 inches.

Well a junior named Skylar Ross Ransom, the daughter of Texas Southern University track star Stephanie Ross, is the state’s 100 meter hurdles state Class 5A champion. We spoke with the charming and talented junior about this meet and life in general. “I was injured as a freshman and did not run the hurdles but last year as a sophomore I placed fourth and it gave me the strength to get ready for this year”.

There is a great difference between the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles and Skylar explained some of the differences. “In the 100 hurdles you have to have great speed between the hurdles and great technique to keep the pace where is the 300 hurdles you must be stronger because it’s a longer race and yes technique plays a bigger role”. Skylar went on to add they are more difference than most people think they are.

The junior went on to say winning the state title is one thing but the coaches look for improvements on your time as you get more into the sport. “It doesn’t do any good to run the best time as a junior and not better that time as a senior”.

GIRLS TRACK REPORT-DE SOTO WINS AGAIN

By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Austin, Texas-Tia’ Gamble placed third in the 300 hurdles as her six points helped De Soto repeat as girls Class 5A champs.

Barely beating Garland out by four points, De Soto pieced together enough points to win the title for the second straight time under Coach June Villers.

A couple of field events points was all it took to win with their second place finish in the mile relay. Camry Grigsby, Shaporris Montgomery, Jade Richardson and Tia’ Gamble ran a 3.44.23 a bit behind Mansfield Timberview girls that won it with a 3.40.51 as Jasmine Warden, Briana Adams, Kaitlyn Williams and Kristyn Williams doing their thing.

The big story on the girls’ side was the outstanding performances of senior Jennefer Madu of Plano East. She rolled to the girls 200 title with a time of 24.03 and Dephanie Adeyemi of Lewisville Flower Mound got second with a 24.12 and up and coming star Rushell Harvey of Houston Westside took third with a 24.30 in the hotly contested race. In the girls 100 meters it was Madu again as she ran an 11.53 for first place while Mia

Pollard of Keller Fossil Ridge got second with a time of 11.66 and yes Dephanie Adeyemi of Lewisville Flower Mound took third place and Harvey got fourth this time. Before all this took place Madu had jumped 41.07 to win the triple jump for her first state title. We spoke with Madu about her record setting day. “I’d have to say it bitter-sweet because this is my last high school meet and I’m going to miss the girls and the competition and I’m honored to be able to showcase what I’ve been doing in practice on the track before this audience”. She plans on attending Texas A & M to study bio science and go on to become a sport medicine expert and have the opportunity to work with great coaches and athletes. She added ‘it’s an honor to be in the company with the greats like Carlette Guidry of Ross Sterling and JoLander Jones of Alief Elsik as four gold medal winners at one state meet’. “Wow I had no idea. I was just working hard the way my coaches taught me to do in practice”. She said the 200 meters was the toughest one and her legs were a bit heavy and during the long jump she had been up and down. “When you consider all things, I feel pretty well about my performances

today and I thank God for this day”. When asked if she knew how close she came to breaking the mark set by Jones in 1984, Jennefer said “well my coaches talked about that last night but with my four gold medals there are too many good teams here like De Soto and Mansfield Timberview that are going to get so many points I think I’m going to be in the top five or so but not second or third.”. She actually finished fourth with her 40 points which is two more than Jones scored in 1984 to tie Dallas Kimball for the team title.

Due to the disqualification in the relays, Plano East chances to win the title went out the window.

Mansfield Legacy’s Shelbi Vaughn tossed the big ball 5001.25 to win the shot put competition and Cion Hicks of Killeen Shoemaker took a distance second place. It was Vaughn again with the discus with a 187-10 well ahead of Hicks who got second again.

The 1600 meters run went to Courtney Kriegshauser of Southlake Carroll in a time 4.53.43 while Madi McLelian of The Woodland took second with a 4.53.50 and third went to Katie Jensen of College Park for a run of 4.54.04

In the girls Class 5A 4 by 200 meter relay it was Garland winning with a time of 1.36.57.

Chastity Clark, Bianca Jackson, Candance Coleman and Quetta Mapps did their thing. Second went to Dallas Skyline with Takia Taylor, Tambrisha Banks, Cameisha Young and Bre’Yana Washn which ran a 1.37.49.

The girls’ high jump with the Maureen Redmond of Channelview who went 5 feet 6 inches as she tied Spring Dekaney Zarriea Willis and Sedalia Ellis of Cypress Falls got third with a 5 feet 4 inch jump. Redmond has yet to decide where she will attend school but she certainly has enough talent to get a good scholarship.

KIRK WARD II-CARVER HIGH SCHOOL TARAN POWERS-WESLEY ELEMENTARY STUDENTS OF THE WEEK KIRK WARD II CARVER HIGH SCHOOL While covering the Good Gang USA celebration at Community of Faith Church, we had the pleasure of talking with Kirk Ward II. The graduating senior from George Washington Carver High School is headed to Howard University where he plans to study Prep Med and Mechanical Engineering. His 3.8-9 G P A ranks him very high and he credits the work of Bishop James Dixon II for his success. “Were it not for the program here at Community of Faith Church I’m certain I

would not have been standing here talking with you today”.

Ward went on to say he feels real good about someday becoming an Orthopedic Surgeon. “Yes sir, Doctors make good pay but more importantly I feel they make a big impact on people lives and that’s very important to me as well”.

As we talked more with Ward we learned he is very proud of the fact Barack Obama became the first African American President. “There are no excuses for blacks anymore because it’s clear if we work hard we can be do anything through Christ who

strengthen us”. Still on the subject, Ward said Americans must be away of the move to keep Obama from being re-elected for a second term. “What they are trying to do is blame the President for our slow economy but we have to give former President George W. Bush some of the blame for that”. All things considered, Ward feels the President has done a pretty fair job during his three plus years in the White House. “Some people are expecting a big change overnight but it just doesn’t happen that way, as you know it takes time to bring about real changes.

If he had it to do over again Kirk said he probably would have taken the S.A.T. sooner because he was simply misinformed going into the test and says he would definitely correct that if given an opportunity to do so.

In his spare time Kirk likes going to the mall, the movies and considers himself a person who truly looks forward to college and adulthood with a full head of steam.

He credits his mother (LaDon Ward and father Kirk Ward Senior) with keeping him on the straight and narrow path all his life and he thanks them for that.

“You know with my Mom being as administrator, she kept me in check all along and my father was always there to assist her”.

In closing Ward said he would like to see just a little easing up

on the dress codes at Carver and the name badges must be worn at all times. But he is looking forward to putting those three Ds of Bishop Dixon program Discipline, stay away from Distraction and stay determined to reach your Destination. We know he will do well and make a positive impact in the lives of all of those he comes in contact with!

TARA POWERS WESLEY ELEME TARY We had the pleasure of talking with a member of the Studewood Cobras Junior Varsity squad while they were being honored as a member of the Good Gangs USA program for 2012. The Program was started in 1994 by the legendary Bishop James Dixon II and has grown into one of the Nation’s biggest and most outstanding programs. Our student is Taran Powers who is a B student at Wesley Elementary school with Math as his 3rd grade favorite subject. The handsome lad is the son of Tinisha Johnson and Traurean Powers, who are also members of the Studewood Cobras organization. Nearly some 200 members of the Studewood Cobras showed up for the award presentation that good place at the Community of Faith Church on Pinemont.

In his spare time Taran likes to watch ESPN and says someday he would like very much to be playing in the NFL. But he understands how low the odds

are of that happening says he is certainly would love to become a police officer.

When asked about Obama becoming the first African American President of the United States of America, Powers said he was surprised to see him win but is glad for him.

He went onto say if he could he would vote for him to win a second term.

The easy going 3rd graders went on to say he feels pretty good about the way things have gone in his life and would not change anything if he could do it over again.

On the subject of Wesley Elementary Powers said he feels the school is run rather well and he would not change anything at all if he was given the opportunity to serve as Principal.

On Sundays you will normally find the Powers family down at New Community Fellowship Church and Taran or Jun Jun as his friend calls him says he enjoys the services.

One of the smaller guys on the J V squad that won the Super Bowl Title Taran plays cornerback and linebacker on defense and he also spent some time at running back as well.

He closed by saying he truly loves playing for the Studewood Cobras and has another year on the J V squad and added he feels they can win the title again next year!

COACHES OF THE WEEK - JUNE VILLERS-MARK BRANDY - DE SOTO

Myers Stadium on the campus of University of TexasAustin. The girls from De Soto won their second straight championship under Coach June Villers. The former track star in

her high school days rallied behind only five returning girls from the state championship team from 2011. But losing six girls seems to have made June and her staff work just that much harder. “Our girls ran a school record and our girls did just what they did a year ago in the mile relay to give us to edge over Garland who had 46 points and Plano East Mansfield Timberview that had 41 points for third place”. The excited coach told the media following their title win one of her assistants kept the point total for her and they needed the mile relay to win it again this year. The second place was good enough for the points they needed to take the title for the second straight season. “We just kept going after it until we got it done again this year”. With all the pressure on the team to get back even with three new legs on the 4 by 100 meter relay and three new legs on the 4 by 400 meter relay and a good freshman and sophomore worked hard to get here and triple jumper got here to help us out”.

With a good policy in place with no free days, she has instilled it

in her girls that they have to work hard each and every day in order for this to happen. “We always work and it’s going our way the past two years”. June started out coaching ten years ago with her high school coach and they gave her the job five years ago. “They pay me to go to track meets and that’s the best thing that could have happened in my life”. Again De Soto has a lot of seniors graduating but coach Villers says their junior varsity won the district by more than 100 points and they have some girls who will be ready to step up and compete.

“We’ll get to work come September and we hope to come here (State Track Meet) again next year”.

MARK BRADY-DE SOTO The De Soto boys claimed the class 5A title and they will have twin trophies in their case now.

Coach Mark Brady boys scored 56 points just 12 ahead of defending state champs Galena Park North Shore who had 44.

But Coach Brady gives all the credit to his staff and bunch of hard working guys. “Hey fel-

lows everybody had a role in this thing and we just work at it and worked at it until we got it done”. He went onto credit De Soto head football coach for helping and supporting the track and field program at De Soto. “I gotta throw him the Props because he is a huge part of our program and all our coaches put in the time”. As we talked more with Brady we learned he had several guys ill on the track and they still got it done. “Our runner in the 100 was vomiting and so was our 4 by 200 relay members but through it all they got it together”. Mark was so excited he went to say that’s the kind of stuff legends are made of. “Can you believe that a guy vomits and his teammates said; hey man you alright and he said yeh let’s go and they go out and run?

“We needed all the points we could get down the stretch Tremayne Acy wasn’t feeling well but he gave it his all and we got the 4 by 100 meter relay”. This was amazing to coach Brady who has spent a number of years at De Soto and he’s happy to get the title. “We told our guys back when school started they would have to

stayed focus in order to get here and win the state title”. The weather was great for the meet as well. “Hey I’m an old guy and when you have to win the 100 meters against the fastest guy in the nation like Abraham Hall you have to put it all out, then come back and run a relay man that tough”. Part of De Soto training include short rest period to help build their endurance. It certainly paid off for his guys and they are state champions.

take the title. Austin is ready to set sights on Baylor University this fall. Not only is he going to compete in track and field but on the basketball court as well.

“I had gone for a visit to Texas A & M and Baylor was waiting at the gym when I got back and they assured me I could participate in both sports that I love; that made it an easy choice”.

As far as the state meet goes, Austin was hoping for some stiffer competition to get him going. “I was looking for some comp and Moore provided it when he cleared 6 feet 11 inches”. Normally Austin says he loves the competition and going to Baylor is going to allow him to do even greater things. “The track coach and basketball coach came to our gym and offered me the full scholarship to attend Baylor University, so once I visited the campus it was clear that’s where I was going”.

Feeling part of a growing trend back to private schools, Allex says Baylor has a lot going for itself now. “It’s a great feeling knowing this is probably one of the best recruiting seasons for Baylor in a long time, both in men’s basketball and track and

field”. We couldn’t help but mention the Lady Bears who won the NCAA title led by former Nimitz standout Brittany Kriner with a 40-0 mark. “Yes sir I was actually in the academic building and Brittany walked by and someone told me to turn around to see her and all I could see was those long dreadlocks, then I thought I missed a chance to meet her”. But I’m sure he will get to meet the single most talked about basketball player since Wilt Chamberlain.

In closing Allex praised his parents for getting the most out of him in competition? “Yes sir my father (Charles Austin) told me he was going to put the dog in me and my mom who was a sprinter at Texas State helped mold me into the person I am today and I’m very grateful to them both”.

ALAYSHA JOH SO SPRI G-WESTFIELD Austin, Texas-Year after year someone goes to Austin and makes a name for them self.

That’s certainly the case with sophomore Alaysha Johnson of Spring-Westfield. The lovely and talented star rose to the

occasion and won the girls Class 5A 300 hurdles in a time of 41.83 well ahead of Jourdan Doffeny of SA Highlands who placed second in a time of 42.22. The soft spoken young lady told the media she felt good to win the title and looks forward to coming back for two more years. She also placed second in the Girls Class 5A 100 hurdles with a time of 13.84 just behind Skylar Ross Ransom of Langham Creek who ran a 13.74. Johnson’s 18 points kept Spring-Westfield in the running earlier on.

“It was outstanding to get second in the 100 hurdles because I actually had a chance to win it like the 300 hurdles but I’m so excited to place is an honor to say the least”. Johnson went on to say she feel good about getting back to state again and again. “Well I feel if I work hard just like I did this year and stay focused I can do this again”.

The talented sophomore added she feels her family support is a big key to her success and the students at Spring Westfield are behind her all the way.

The 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles are basically two different races

and it requires a great deal of attention on both events.

“Technique, technique, technique is the key. We work on our technique Monday through Sunday; every practice it’s drills and technique before we do any running”. Working on building speed as they go through their daily workouts Johnson says she is looking forward to her return to Austin.

ALFRED ‘FATS’ THOMAS CELEBRATES 70TH BIRTHDAY

By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View The Memorial Day weekend has special effects on most American due to the fact we honor those who served in our Armed Forces. But for Alfred “Fats” Thomas it has even more of a flavor these days. Fact is with a birthday that falls so close to the national holiday and this time around it is number 70. The graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in the class of 1960 celebrated his birthday at the Magnolia Room of the Sheraton Brook Hollow.

Dr. Victor Keys and I dropped in on the celebration. Thomas who bleeds Blue and Gold is one of

the loyalist members of BTW Alumni and both his daughter attended BTW as well. Shantel Thomas-Edwards and her hubby Wayne Edwards were on hand as well as their children Lynton and Logann Edwards. They put together an outstanding poem for their legendary grandfather.

Thomas other daughter is Tamaiki Thomas King and is in the United States Army and her hubby is Lt. Terrance King and their children Terrence King Jr. along with Tyler King both made the trip from Virginia where they are stationed. It was great to see Alfred with a big smile on his face and all his classmates and family as well as friends came to share in his

honor.

Alfred Smith and Chunta ClarkSmith their children are Ariel Smith, Daysha Smith, Lester and Devon Smith former Studewood Cobra now at BTW also. Smith rounded out the immediate family for Thomas as he was surrounded by friends, classmates and well-wishers.

During the roast and toast Harry Clack told of the brethrens at Wayman Chapel A.M.E. Church wanted to come to Thomas’s home to pray for him while he was stricken by diabetes. Then Thomas asked that you all went to the home of brother so and so and prayed for him and he died, then when another brother became ill you all went to his

home and prayed for him and he died also. According to Clack, Thomas told them he would pray at home and return to church as soon as he was well and he did. He has been there ever since.

STUDEWOOD COBRAS HONORED BY GOOD GANG USA

By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View The Studewood Cobras were among the winners for the 2012 Good Gang USA Inc. winners from Community of Faith Church and the organization founded by Bishop James Dixon II in 1994. The organization

honors community leaders each year and the Cobras were selected among the many the honored.

So Dr.Victor Keys and I went over for the Services at Community of Faith Church and enjoyed the services very much.

We applaud Bishop Dixon for his effort on this day and we felt truly welcomed at the services.

The results were very positive for the Studewood Cobras who turned out in a force of more than 200 men women in children. It did us well to see the Cobras Mascots who are all under six years old standing alongside the two Houston Texans Cheerleaders who came out for photos. The five Mascots are Erin Prudhomme, Lyric McCoy, Kahlis McCray, Trakale Steen and Skyla Gallow.

This is a day they shall remember for many years to come.

Fact is the Texans Cheerleaders also posed for Dr. Keys camera with the Studewood Cobras who

joined in with Spring Dekaney’s state championship football team and their state finalist girls’ basketball teams were also honored.

The Center for Success, the Guardian Angles were a couple more who received honors for their services to the community as well.

The youth took over this day and the young band did a wonderful of performing much to the delight of the sanctuary full of people. It was good to see former Studewood cheerleader JaCoya Nellum who is now the caption of Lamar High school cheerleaders. She came through

the program and attended the well recognized Dominion Academy. Tishia Bryant did a super job of her version of “I Believe I Can Fly and the choir backed her up very well.

On the Education side Bishop Dixon honored Superintendent of Katy School Dr. Alton Frailey and Superintendent of Spring ISD Dr. Ralph Draper.

It was very comforting to see our community church working to give our youth encouragement.

WHAT IS TRUTH? THEY THAT ARE CHRIST’S There are many in the religious world today proclaiming to be “Christ-ians”. The name itself indicates ownership. There are many proclaiming to belong to Christ, but they are thinking and doing things their own way.

There are lifestyles, things that are put in place for worship, and names that are given to men that cannot be found in the apostles’ doctrine. There are also TRADITIONS that has been put in place by MAN for worship and OBSERVANCE, it is certain these traditions are by man because, they cannot be found in the APOSTLE’S doctrine. We cannot have it our way just because it “SEEMETH RIGHT” (Proverbs 14:12 and 16:25; Isa.55:6-9).Those that belongs to Christ has been commanded what to observe; Matt 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Definition: (1)sensual 5591 psuchikos-b) governed by breath; the sensuous nature with its subjection to appetite and passion If we belong to Christ, “Christians”(Rom.8:9-15), we must do it his way because we are not our own, we have been bought with a price (1Cor.6:19-20 and 7:22-24). Christians must deny themselves take up the cross daily and follow him; Luke 9:22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day. 23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his

cross daily, and follow me. 24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. 25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? 26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels.

The blueprint of The One Body (Eph.4:1-6), The One Church that Christ is building, and is the head of (Matt.16:13-18; Acts2:47; Col.1:9-20), is found in The Apostles’ Doctrine, which is in New Testament Scriptures.

Now let us read in The Apostles’ Doctrine as it defines those that belong to Christ. He that hath an ear let him hear, and then strive to do.

The Lesson: THEY THAT ARE CHRIST’S. Gal 5:24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.(KJV) Gal 5:24 ... By Paris Eley FINDING EDUCATION AND VALUE IN WORK Well, that time of the year has again arrived when students will get to ignore their alarm devices and reward themselves with the extra snooze time that they have so craved; trading in the restrictive regimen of academic life for the easy-going routine of summer with its trips, social gatherings, and leisure activities. In an effort to advance or catch-up, some will spend the early weeks in summer school; and a particularly ambitious group will take to the streets in the time honored tradition of looking for employment. The “summer job” remains as much a part of the student educational experience as proms or pledges, and it is very serious business. President Obama’s summer program has obtained commitments from the private sector and from government to create 90,000 paying summer jobs and internships, up from the 70,000 announced in January, according to Laura Clawson, a writer on labor affairs for the Daily Kos Blog.

Clawson notes that the number increases considerably when one considers“…unpaid internships and mentorships, which Clawson says, “must be strictly overseen so that kids aren’t just used as free labor without gaining skills or prospects; unpaid work of any kind is poor enough…without being directly exploitative).” Summer jobs are a big deal for tens of thousands of students who may use the funds for clothing, car insurance, or college tuition. Erika Christakis, a Harvard College administrator and blogger for Time’s website, says that “It was once common to see teenagers mowing lawns, waiting tables, digging ditches and bagging groceries for modest wages in the long summer months.

Summer employment was a social equalizer, allowing both affluent and financially strapped teenagers to gain a foothold on adulthood, learning the virtues of hard work, respect and teamwork in a relatively low-stakes atmosphere. But youth employment has declined precipitously over the years, and young people are losing a chance to develop these important life skills in the process.” In July 2010, (the last year for which figures are available) fewer than half of American young people between the ages of 16 and 24 were employed; so even an uptick of 20,000 paying jobs means we are still in the midst of a tough economy and the competition for those jobs will be stiff.

Still, I think that it is important for young people of a certain

age to learn the value of work; even the act of looking for it can be instructive in social interaction. Not all jobs will be glamorous but they can teach a student about the nature of hierarchal structures and how to best to function productively within them. But not every job or task is going to be a dream assignment no matter where you land.

Christakis argues that detachment from unskilled summer jobs is making American kids unfamiliar with work norms… on her own campus she finds that kids augment their resumés with unpaid internships, rather than earn a buck with a more traditional — and unskilled — summer job.

Having mentored and managed 16-24 year olds as interns and new hires there are some thoughts I think every new worker should commit to memory: Tardiness, absenteeism, and insubordination in the workplace, unlike school, usually carry stiff economic penalties ranging from termination and loss of paycheck to poor evaluation and reduced income; shoddy work and low productivity, even if you are cleaning a yard or mowing grass is not the way to gain repeat customers (earnings). Some of those students who remembered these simple rules also mastered the complexities and subtleties of marketing and eventually rose to executive positions themselves. In the highly charged atmosphere of Fortune 500 companies, students usually realized that they had to accelerate to the speed of their environment and adjusted accordingly. When I became a volunteer for the PABA summer program, I supervised young people whose introduction to the work force called for them to put in eight hour days meeting the ever-changing demands of preteen and teenage children while attending to the light general cleaning duties that teenagers have had a reputation for avoiding since the invention of the mop and pail. The ones who saw the summer work as a means to a higher end and focused on doing their jobs well until the program ended were the ones who proved to be successful in their chosen endeavors. Think of work as an opportunity for character development and give it your best effort.

Remind yourself of this bit of wisdom from the advice columnist, Dear Prudence: You just made the transition from school to work. You’re used to being told what will be on the test and when your papers are due, so the

open-ended nature of a job can be disorienting. But let me assure you that if you think picking up lunch is beneath you, there are plenty of young people who bring back the tuna salad with a smile, thrilled to be starting their climb up the totem pole.

For those parents who worry that their child’s college application might lack the presumed necessary pizzazz without some prestigious firm in the work history section, take heed: Michael Smerconish, columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer, and talk show host, identifies himself through the years leading to his degree, as a onetime maintenance man at McDonald’s, truck driver, delivery man, dishwasher, painter of street address numbers on curbs, raker of leaves, and shoveler of snow. After reading Christical’s article he contacted Bruce Bunnick in the admissions office of Lehigh University, one of his two former alma maters to get an idea of the weight that might be affixed to impressive summer positions. Bunnick said he looks forward to meeting students who can describe the value of that experience — whether it occurred on Wall Street or at Wal-Mart — in a compelling way. “I honestly don’t think it matters much whether or not the student saved the world or literally rolled up his or her sleeves to perform a menial summer job,…It’s a great thing for a student to engage in summer work where they can convey exactly what the experience meant to them in their college application, whether the message is ‘I rubbed elbows with Wall Street tycoons’ or ‘I flipped burgers, but it gave my outlook on hard work a deeper meaning.’

Quentin Jackson Mott in the admission office from Smerconish’s other alma mater, University of Pennsylvania, was equally emphatic: “...Penn’s admissions team “loves summer jobs and students who work part-time during the school year,” it meets fewer applicants with such experiences, despite their clear benefits.

Working the grill, waiting tables, scooping ice cream, and folding T-shirts “all require the employee to show up on time, be a team member, have a good work ethic, be service-oriented, learn how to take critical (and positive) feedback from a manager, manage a paycheck and what goes into it — what it means to work for a wage,” Mott said.

“All of these intangible skills will serve a student well in college.”

And, I might add, in life.

The Way I See It

By BIG John Chandler SOME THINGS HAVE TO BE HEARD BEFORE BEING DISAPPROVED I have only been covering high school sports for 12 years or so, so I grant you I’m no expert.

Never claimed to be one and don’t want to be one either. I’m just a fan as many of you are. I enjoy the sights, sound and pageantry of youth competition.

I always have and I admit it’s in my blood. I never deny my love for the professional sports teams in Boston-the Celtics, Patriots, Bruins and my heart and passion the Red Sox. But my true love is high school sports. I am always notified by many fans about issues relating to high school athletics, so it was with general interest I looked into the ‘new Astrodome proposals’. The dome has been vacant for 15+ years since the Houston Oilers moved to Tennessee to become the Titans and the Texans began operation in Houston in 2002.

Reliant Stadium was built next door to the Dome. The building has deteriorated over the years and yet the bills are being paid by all taxpayers in Harris County. No one wants it torn down but no one has come with a decent proposal for new business to keep the stadium. Forget for now a shopping mall, casino, amusement park and many other business plans. It won’t work and no one can propose any new taxes that will gain any kind of support from the diverse communities around Harris County.

But one idea that made me laugh in a very angry way was the proposal to turn the Dome into a business/recreation center with seating of 15,000 to 20,000. This person stated this plan would encourage the University Interscholastic League to place Houston back in the rotation to host the state football championship games.

Now I readily admit there’s nothing that many of us in the local media along with high school football fans would love to see more than the state championship football games returning to Houston. We have the hotel space and the required amenities to put on a fabulous show. The National Basketball Association All-Star game, the Final Four and possible Super Bowl is returning to Houston because of the great job many of our local citizens did in the past to support these events. I can’t

say the same regarding our state championship football games.

They did a very poor job in my opinion. Many years we had the opportunity to request the U.I.L. to consider rotating the state championship basketball tournament in a four city rotation of Houston, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Austin and San Antonio yet the support was weak at best and local elected morons (aka-politicians) gave no support to the idea. In fact one bullethead elected official who will remain nameless said ‘everyone wants to come to Austin’ even though he is elected to serve an inner city district in Houston. So believe me no support will come from these lame individuals.

Also 15,000 to 20,000 seating capacity is not any shape, fashion or form going to elate the U.I.L. and coaches around the state to return to Houston Texas.

This created a hearty laugh for me. I was privileged to attend for the last two years the state title games in both 5A and 4A at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington Texas. The beautifully-designed stadium that seats over 100,000 Dallas Cowboy fans was a joy to behold. The support staff at the stadium welcomed visitors with open arms. Fans enjoyed being in attendance at the games in that building. What makes anyone with the sense of a fly (sorry for any disrespect to our flies) that 15,000 seats will draw any attention from the U.I.L.?

Last years attendance to the 4A final drew nearly 50,000 fans.

I’m so sick and tired of the money-scheming individuals that look to make a fast buck on high school sports. To the individuals that came up with this ‘new dome proposal’, please place in the trash can with the other ‘good ideas’. I can name several more reasons why the idea is a fraud, but I started to laugh so hard typing this column that I had to stop so I could finish. To our dear readers and those who carry a passion for high school athletics and the athletes themselves, don’t forget our young ladies and men play because they love to. We should support their efforts likewise.

Stadium or not, we should support them because we love to.

By Dr. Victor Keys A King-Size View Booker T. Washington HS/HSEP’s Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach Vincent Grayson stated that “this year’s Annual Athletic Banquet was a big success. Mainly, because “we not only celebrated our current student/athletes; we also had an opportunity to honor one of our own. We inducted Mercury Hayes into our Hall of Fame”. After, graduating from Booker T. Washington HS/HSEP, Mercury went on to play college football for the

Michigan Wolverines and professional football for the Atlanta Falcons, the New Orleans Saints, and in the Canadian League. Former San Antonio Spurs coach and NBA great, John Lucas was our ‘keynote speaker’.

Coach Grayson added that “it was a great year in sports for Booker T. Washington HS/HSEP. The Football Team along with Girls’ and Boys’ Basketball Teams all made it to the District Playoffs. The Boys’ Track Team made it to the State Finals in Austin and the Girls’

Track Team went to the Regional Finals. The Boys’ Cross Country Team won District and the Girls’ Cross Country Team were 2nd place finishers in the District”.

ALDINE ISD‘S EISENHOWER HIGH SCHOOL AND CARVER MAGNET SCHOOL DUO MAKES GOLF HISTORY

By Dr. Victor Keys A King-Size View This year’s 18-5A District Golf Tournament was a historic event for Aldine Independent School District. For the first time in the history of Eisenhower High School two golfers earned medalist honors in their respective divisions. Brandon Reed and Mariesha Keys both won district titles in golf. Brandon Reed, a four year letterman and captain of the Eisenhower Boys’ Varsity Golf Team, for the past four years has made it to the Regional Tournament for the past two years. This year he was involved in a fight to the finish with Nimitz’s Marlon Chapman.

However, when all the sand settled; it was Brandon who won the tournament. Mariesha Keys who is also a senior and the captain of the Girls’ Varsity Golf Team at Eisenhower on the other hand won the girls’ division by 17 strokes and easily moved on the Regional play. The Eisenhower Boys’ Team finished 2nd in the district behind Nimitz and the MacArthur Girls’ Team won in the Girls’ Division.

Haggerty stated that “this is a great day for Aldine ISD, Eisenhower High School, and Carver Magnet School. We have been blessed to have some of the brightest young people in the world, attend our schools and play golf in Aldine ISD. I am so proud of these student/athletes and I will truly miss them”.
