Behind The Wheel With THE KING (Arthur Prayther)

BUICK ENCLAVE AWD Memphis, Tennessee-As the old saying goes over the river and through the woods with the big trucks that delivers American goods. That was the case on the first week in August as we went to Memphis, Tennessee for the first time in more than 42 years. We want to thank the people at GM for helping us with the trip and we found new respect for their new crossovers. Yes the Buick Enclave AWD Premium model we tested certainly made the trip a pleasure to say the least. With a combine fuel economy of 18 miles per gallon the Enclave provided the kind of luxury and comfort we expected on this trip. Actual figures are reported at 16 miles per gallon in the city and 22 on the highway and we are certain it lived up to it. The 3.6 Liter V6 engine producing 288 horses at 6400 RPM and cranking out 270 pounds per foot of torque at 3400 RPM. This engine mated to a Hydra-Matic 6T75 new 6speed transmission with shift control provided smooth shifting from one gear to the next even up and down hills. Power meets the road in the form of 20 inch chrome clad aluminum wheels

surrounded by world class allseason tires. We are talking about some smooth sailing all the way to Hope Arkansas (Home of former President Bill Clinton) through Little Rock and on into Memphis. Having a Bose entertainment system allowed us to listen to our favorite music as well and pickup some good radio stations including the great WDIA in Memphis. There were plenty of outlets for phone plugs and the likes as well as a quality XM navigation system complete with back up camera and DVD to name a few things. Safety gets an A with the Enclave, frontal crashes with a five-star rating for driver and four-star rating for front passenger, while a five-star rating for both front and rear seats on side impacts as rollovers gets a fourstar rating. In addition to AWD the new Enclave also comes with fourwheel disc brakes with ABS and traction control. Having to make stops in Dallas, Texas allowed us to not only get a good feel for the vehicle but it

also gave us an opportunity to get use to the vehicle. Fact is one of the things that stood out with me was the climate control system turned out to the best we’ve ever had on a long trip. From the first day we set the temperature climate at 73 degrees and the fan switch on two and we never had to move it for the two weeks we had the vehicle. Let me make it clear that since 1987 when we started testing automobile we have never had one where we never had to adjust the temperature gauge nor the fan speed. That is a break through when it comes to climate controls and comfort levels. Once you are inside the new Buick Enclave you can tell this automaker designer and engineers put in the time in research and development. Because the mahogany wood trimmed layout is perfect for the size of the vehicle and all things are just in the right spot including gauges, knobs and gear shift as well as foot pedals and mirror controls also. Fact is having a switch that will allow you to remotely fold down your mirrors when you are in a tight spot is also a very neat feature. With sevenpassenger seating and 2nd row captain chairs and 3rd row split bench seats the Enclave is set up perfectly and fits all your traveling needs. Please allow me to add all these seats are leather trimmed and so is the steering wheel. An eight-way power seat with recline and lumbar greets

the driver while the front passenger gets a four-way seat with all of the above including memory. Yes I can safely say Buick thought of just about everything when putting this vehicle together. All part of GM’s big return to the top of the market place the Buick Enclave has a fiveyear/100,000 mile power train limited warranty with a fouryear/50,000 bumper to bumper warranty and please see your dealer for details. The power steering has a real feel that keeps you in touch with the road due to variable assist. The dual exhaust with chrome tips really give you the feel of

Page 2

the late 60s and 70s and definitely bring back memories. One of the most important things is 76% of the Buick Enclave’s part comes from the U S and Canada with both the engine and transmission built in the United States with the finally assembly point being in Lansing, Michigan. In closing please allow me to say the power sun roof up front and the 2nd row skylight allowed for plenty of good natural lighting on our trip and made the sightseeing so much more pleasant. It’s been a while since we went this far in such a short time but thanks to the Buick Enclave we certainly enjoyed it!

2013 CHEVY SILVERADO CREW CAB LTZ MORE THAN A PICKUP TRUCK By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View When it comes to pickup trucks of the future, Chevrolet has gotten off to a great start. To begin with taking advantage of one of the longest running vehicles on the road today, Chevy adds to the class of the 2013 Silverado LTZ. The crew cab we tested barely got into our garage but let me tell you it was well worth the extra time in took to get it inside each night. The new Silverado is 67% U.S./Canadian while 29% of its part are from Mexico with the final assembly point being in Silao, GL Mexico. Both the engine and the six-speed automatic transmission are built right here in the United States. The Silverado is powered by a proven Vortec 5.3 Liter V8 SFI engine with active fuel management as well as flex-fuel capability. Now let’s make it clear, yes this product also runs on

flex fuel and with gasoline it gets 17 miles per gallon combine with that being 15 city and 21 highway. Those are great numbers when you consider all the truck you are getting with this baby. The Silverado comes with a five-year/100,000 mile power train limited warranty. Just as we mentioned all the time the new Pickup trucks have more of a car like ride these days. But please don’t let the smooth ride fool you because this baby gets to work as well. It’s equipped with a Z85 handling/trailering suspension and boxed frame design with hydro formed technology. Yet this big baby has coil over shock front suspension and multi-leaf rear spring suspension, four-wheel anti-locking brakes, all of which gives you a good ride with or without a trailer hooked up. Gross weight rating is 6,800

pounds and rear axle 3.08 ratio and locking tailgate with EZ lift are just some of the options on this unit. When it comes to safety the NHTSA rated the Silverado as one of the best in class. A fourstar rating for driver and front passenger in frontal crashes, while side crashes gets five-star rating for both front and rear seat occupants. The risk of roll over is a highly rated four-star. Inside safety is uncommonly high for a pickup truck. Dual stage driver and front passenger airbags with passenger sensing system, plus head curtain side airbags with rollover protection. These are certainly the same words you read when we are testing a luxury touring sedan. Yes it has seat-mounted side impact airbags for driver and front passenger. Sure there are the others such as remote key-

less entry and day time running lamps. The large outside mirror even have a remote fold feature that really comes in handy when you are parking the unit. Our test truck came with sparkling 20-inch chrome clad aluminum wheels as well as performance 20-inch All-season tires. Optional heavy duty trailering is also available along with six inch tubular chromed assist steps. There’s a rear camera system as well as rear wheelhouse liners and bedrail protectors to name a few. A power sliding sun roof rounds out some of the options that help takes this vehi-

cle sticker price just over 45 grand. Inside you are in cowboy heaven because a leather trimmed steering wheel with radio controls so you and take advantage of the XM radio for 3-months free. A Bose sound system makes it easy for you listen to your favorite tunes in concern like sound. There are so many more things like the remote start and power heated bucket seats the new Silverado is parked at your local Chevy Dealership so go and take a test drive. Take it from the King we know you will be glad you did!

The 2013 Chevrolet Silverado Crew Cab LTZ 2WD 1500 is more than a pickup truck

SCION IQ A NEW MINICOMPACT VERY INTERESTING By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Each year the world’s automakers try harder to make a vehicle for every segment of the market place. Well the new Scion IQ three-door lift back is one of these vehicles and is very interesting to say the least. First of all when I got home that night I thought part of the vehicle was actually missing. You see we had just finished our week with a Crew Cab pickup truck. But after a day or two behind the wheel of the new Scion IQ we got a better feel for what the vehicle had the offer. First of all it is powered by a 1.3 Liter 4cylinder DOHC 16 valve Dual VVT-I engine that produces 94 horse power. It also comes with continuously variable transmission with intelligence. Electric power steering makes handling this little vehicle fun and its overall wide stance make for safe turns. Still at one point even though there was a back seat but no trunk those first two days it took some getting used to.

However those 37 miles per gallon comes in handy and an estimated cost of $1,500 annually got my attention. Going down the streets of Houston the new Scion IQ turns some heads the most common comment was it was cute. A firm little suspension played a role with independent Macpherson strut front suspension and compact torsion beam rear suspension throw in front disc and rear drum brakes. Power gets to the pavement on P175/60R 16 tires with 16 inch steel wheels with full covers.

Once you were inside the IQ has a good looking interior and a full array of safety features such as a full complimentary of air bags much like more expensive models. Keep in mind fully loaded our test vehicle barely made its way to $18,000. That included such features as power outside mirrors with turn signal indicators and projector beam lamps.

There is an optional illuminated door sill kit and interior light, carpeted floor mates and cargo net to go along with a rear spoiler to round out the option list for this model.

In closing please allow me to add the new Scion IQ even has 50/50 split fold-flat rear seats and Scion throws in a full tank of gasoline.

Sounds came from a Pioneer 160 watt AM/FM/CD/HD radio with four speakers. By the way an optional XM satellite radio and a Pioneer Premium HD radio with iPod ready CD deck.

MAXINE ELNEDO-WILLIAMS REALLY ENJOYING HER GOLDEN YEARS By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Some people like to sit around as age creeps up on them then there are those who simply get it in gear and truly enjoy their golden years. Well the charming

Maxine Williams had another birthday recently and she is still going strong. Born in Plum, Texas just past the turn of a century and is now 12 years into another century she is showing no signs of slowing down. The 1935 graduate of Jack Yates High School went back to Plum to help her mother raise four of her family members while working and going to night school. Mrs. Williams has been blessed to out live most in her family. Her mother went on t0 glory at the age of 93 but Williams has past that and still going strong. When asked to share some of her secrets she simply smiled and said “I just have faith in the lord and go about life with a good understanding of how life

should be lived”. She praised her daughter Rosena Richardson and her son-in-law Oscar Richardson along with their son Milko. “They keep me going and usually they pick me up and I stay over there most of the day and then come home around five in the evening”. Starting out at Langston 2nd Ward Elementary School after moving to Houston in 1925, Williams learned to sew so she was able to help her mom and the rest of her family. Later on thanks to Rudolph Taylor she learned of enchiladas and started her restaurant in Riverside area and for 52 years she was known as Elnedo, the name of her world famous restaurant. Famous for her homemade

chilly that made her food better, Williams explained; “The real chilly added flavor so that’s all I’ll tell you about that”. It started out with just 10 tables but she later added a band stand and actually had a band performing there for years as it was the place to go. Eugene Moody was one of her acts and we want to wish Mr. Moody a speedy recovery because he is in the V.A. hospital. Mrs. Williams admit she misses the restaurant from time to time but brought one of her workers with her so he fixes her a fine breakfast each morning and gets her started on her day. By the time the weekend rolls around Williams bake some of her world famous corn bread and then a cake for the after church Sunday dinner. Her son

in law is pretty good on the pit so he fixes the meat and it’s good with greens. By the way that church is Jordan Grove where the Reverend Danny Davis is the pastor and Williams has been a member there since 1949. At some point she taught Sunday school and really just enjoys going to worship God and it leads you to a good Christian life. “The old pastor who came to see me working to help my mother told me I would be blessed by God for the work I was doing and would live a long fruitful life”. Williams is doing just that and she is a true blessing just visiting with her or talking with her on the phone gives me energy to keep on doing what I’m doing as well!

A KING-SIZE MOVER AND SHAKER: MS. JOYCE V. BARRETT By Dr. Victor Keys A King-Size View We are pleased to announce that our KI G-SIZE MOVER A D SHAKER for the month of August is Ms. Joyce V. Barrett. Ms. Barrett is the second child born to Mr. R.J. and E.A. Ross. Blessed with a remarkably gifted voice, Joyce has been singing since early childhood and she has continued developing this gift throughout her adulthood. She is the mother of Broderick and Christopher Valentine, and the grandmother of Sierra, Braden, and Kaelyn Valentine. Growing up, Ms. Barrett knew she would continue with her passion of singing, but she also knew that the corporate world was also within her reach. Through hard work and a desire to succeed, she received her

Bachelor of Science in Business Management and with credits already earned; she is pursuing a Masters in Human Resources Management. She is currently the Director of Human Resources for McConnell Jones Lanier & Murphy LLP (MJLM), one of the largest Professional Service firms in the Houston area. Ms. Barrett overseas the Houston, Dallas, and Huntsville, Alabama offices for all HR related issues. She recently completed training and course work to become a Certified Professional Coach (CPC). Ms. Barrett belongs to various professional organizations, which include; Local Houston Chapter for HR Houston, Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM), National Association of African American in Human Resources (NAAAHR), and

Ms. Barrett’s profound faith in the Lord is prevalent within the True Light Missionary Church, where she is the Interim Personnel Manager and is currently serving on the Pulpit Committee. She is also a member of the Light Seekers Sunday’s School Class and the Vice President of the Choir Group, “The Illuminators”; Ms. Barrett continues to show her faith by using the gift given to her by God and her parents…singing! Ms. Barrett informed me that she recently completed a duo track with Gospel Singer and Songwriter, Kenny Andrews in December of 2011; with the release of Lord I Believe, a track off Kenny Andrews’ new album “New Creature”. Her own project will be released by October 1, 2012 entitled “In His

Presence”; produced by Chester Andrews. During my interview with Ms. Barrett, I was so impressed by her, her achievements, and her faith in God. She is a great role model for any young person aspiring to enter the corporate world or willing to serve in the Lord. Before the interview ended, Ms. Barrett stated that “ministering to the heart and soul by sharing my love of God through song was her passion and testimony”. She added that “helping others or being a blessing to somebody through the gift of her voice ensured her that her living has not been in vain”. She closed the interview by stating that,” if we are not impacting another person’s life, we are not fully following Christ”.

BROTHER SMITTY CELEBRATES ANOTHER BIRTHDAY BY JUMPING AND SINGING GOSPEL SONGS By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Earnest Smith Sr. has been singing gospel songs for more than 78 years and he is still jumping for joy. On Saturday August 18th Brother Smitty lead the Original Spiritual Travelers in song at Greater St. Matthews Baptist Church. It was also his 71st wedding anniversary to Ollie Mae Smith and the couple enjoyed themselves very much. Smitty and Ollie Mae are truly blessed when you take in the fact Smitty has worked on several jobs during his life and managed to raise 10 children (6 Living) and pay for their first home. A little more than a year

ago the City of Houston built him a brand new home. “Ain’t God Good he asked as how I can jump like this at age 92 and I have no aches and pains after a show like this”. Fact is Smitty was jumping up and down while we were talking after the show. “King, boy I tell you the Lord has blessed me and I want to thank him and all the other people who came out for us today and my daughters do a good job of helping take care of me and Ollie Mae”. Keeping no secrets Smith told us he eats oatmeal for breakfast and beans and cornbread in the evening and every now and then he actually put a little meat in his beans. “Boy that works well for me; the key is the Lord and I love singing and praising him, Ain’t God Good”.

Sister Dorothy Mitchell

The legendary singer has buried 47 members of his group since they started out and he has been with Rev. Ervin Dixon who plays guitar for him a very long time. Fact is at age 92, Smith is the oldest performer in the state of Texas possibly the oldest in the country. When you see the energy he displays on the stage it’s unbelievable to say the least. One of his songs “It didn’t have to be that way” he explains God made it good for him and his family. Because in his younger years Smith actually spent nearly three months as a slave before escaping and coming back to Texas. While living with his uncle Smitty and his uncle were sold to a man in the south and had no choice but to go at age 15 and it was in those cotton fields he realized he could sing and believe me he was singing for his life. “The white man came up on that big white horse and fired a couple of shots in the air and told us to get to picking that cotton and that’s what we did man”. When the opportunity came, Smith escaped and came over to Texas. “Sure I was afraid but the Lord brought me through, ain’t God good, boy I tell you he brought me from a mighty long ways”.

haven’t seen him please go to www.kingsizeview.com and click on Fiesta Festival Performance with Ernie Johnson in the white suit and stroll down to Smitty and the Original Spiritual Travelers. We know you will be glad you did because this man is in a class by himself! On the same show was the sweet signing Southern Travelers and

man let me tell you these guys can sing very well. In closing we want to thank Pastor Gusta Booker of Greater St. Matthews for allowing Smitty and his groups to use the church. We certainly enjoyed the event and look forward to working to help get Smitty and the group some more work!

STAX MUSIC MUSEUM A MUST-SEE IN MEMPHIS By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Memphis, Tennessee-Keeping with our commitment to our corporate sponsor Fiesta, that Black History is a year round event, we went to Memphis, Tennessee. Even though we went there to receive the 2012 Presidents’ Award from the Jus’ Blues Music Foundation our crew found time to spend two hours at the Stax Music Museum. The Museum is located at 926 E. McLemore Avenue Memphis, Tennessee 38106, just off highway 240 and right in the old neighborhood. Their phone number is (901) 261-6338 and you can visit staxmuseum.com for more information. The Stax Museum of American Soul music, Stax Music Academy and the Soulsville Charter School comprise the Soulsville Foundation and it provides excellent educations opportunities for students in the area. If you would like to get involved just visit SoulsvilleFoundation.org.

The likes of the late Otis Redding, Johnnie Taylor, Isaac Hayes and many others like Ike and Tina Turner, the Staple Singers, Booker T. and the MGs, Aretha Franklin, Eddie Floyd the Bar-Kays, Sam and Dave and Carla and the late Rufus Thomas among others. The history rang out loud and clear. The Museum organizers have done a marvelous job of helping to keep the rich tradition alive and well. When you look at the photos with this column you will understand just how important this is to our culture as well as history. Just looking at the Soul Train dance floor brought back memories and seeing Otis Redding suede shirt or Albert King and

Pops Staples guitars takes you back. It’s very important that our young people get the opportunity to visit this city and take in all the history it has to offer.

In closing please allow me to add it’s not every day you have a chance to see Isaac Hayes Golden Cadillac or a wall of gold record. So please put it on your vacation list for 2013.

VISITING THE NATIONAL CIVIL RIGHTS MUSEUM GIVES A VERY MOVING FEELING TO ONE’S HEART By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Memphis, Tennessee-It’s been more than 42 years since Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated and we got a chance to visit the National Civil Rights Museum the other week. It’s located at 450 Mulberry Street Memphis, Tennessee 38105. The phone number is (901) 521-9699 or www.civilrightsmuseum.org for more information. Growing up in Bastrop, Louisiana and working to help conduct voter registration drives while at the Morehouse Parish Community Organization we

developed a great deal of respect for the works of Dr. King. The 1964 Nobel Peace Prize winner was shot by James Earl Ray as he stood on the balcony of the Lorraine Hotel on April 4, 1968. King in Memphis to help garbage workers get better pay and working conditions among the many other things he was doing to help make a better life for Black American. The Mountain top speech made on April 3rd quickly came to my mind. Once inside the Museum Theater hearing the speech on the screen was more than I could stand. Fact is everyone who watched the 20 minute video of those last few days of Dr. King was in tears when we made our exits. Right from the start driving up the Hotel that’s now a tourist site just looking at the replica of King’s Cadillac sitting out front along with the Dodge just sent your mind into thinking back, it was the first time I had to stop to say a prayer for those who like gave so much to keep the Civil Rights movement going. All of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) workers who have

Photos of the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis

passed on were in the little prayer. My heart remained heavy though out the 4 hour visit we had at the Museum. Now we understand what DeLloyd Parker of the SHAPE center was doing when he started an annual trip down south for the students at his center. We certainly will join him in support of that trip from now on. Some might say you just try are forget but after the tears came down I truly felt better. To stand in the bathroom when James Earl Ray fired the shot that killed King was so touching as well as looking at the Bus that Rosie Parks took that second row seat and refused to go to the back. It led the Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped the change the course of our country’s history. You just have to see it to fully understand how heartfelt this experience this all was. My best friend growing up is Larry “Teddy” Perry and he had gone to the Museum and warned me just how moving it was going to be. Was he ever right on the money, I honestly don’t think I back to normal until we visited the Stax Museum and that within itself was an exciting experience. Once we were inside another moment came when we got to room 306 where King actually checked into and took a short nap before going outside to get some fresh air before schedule to dine at the home of Rev. Samuel “Billy” Kyle. As the record shows King was somehow told the dinner was at 6.00PM but according to Kyle it was suppose to be at 5.00PM. Some even wonder if he had gone earlier would the assassination have taken place. But the

fact of the matter is King is gone but will never be forgotten and what he stood for lives on in the minds and spirits of those of us who truly care about his works. Sure I probably should have gone to Memphis before now to see this Museum but now that I’ve gone we will make the trip once a year to report of this historic Museum that’s truly a part of American history all Americans should take a look at.

Out and About with John Engel

HEMPSTEAD TEXAS About fifty miles northwest of Houston, straight out Highway 290 is the town of Hempstead. Founded in 1856, this sleepy town was the terminus of the Houston and Central Texas Railway. Today, it is still a town that sees a lot or rail traffic. Although no longsr shipping point it is the crossroads for two major rail lines. Currently about 4500 people call Hempstead their home.

the city. One of these changes was the closing of the diner I used to frequent.

My experience with Hempstead goes back over 30 years when I drove truck from Houston to Austin every night. In the 1980’s there were very few places on the road open all night to eat and a small diner in the middle of town with a large parking lot served as a meeting place for many of us traveling to both Austin and Bryan/College Station. The food was not great, but we could park and take a rest from the road.

Another loss was the Hempstead Inn, a huge family style restaurant housed in an old two story farm house in the center of town on the main road. Your party would enter the front door and be seated at a long table. You would be placed next to the people that arrived before and after you whether you knew them or not. There were no menus. Soon after getting your drinks the first bowl or plate would come out. You would grab your portion and pass the plate. If the plate became empty another took its place. As you sat you would see salad, homemade vegetables, chicken, beef, cornbread and all the foods we think of when we have Sunday dinner at Mom’s. Oh yes, remember to save room for the best cobbler I can remember!

In the mid 2000’s Hempstead was bypassed when Highway 290 was upgraded and this caused some major changes in

One of the most notable casualties of progress was the closing of Lawrence Marshal Dealerships. Once one of the

Page 11

highest volume car dealers in the nation this dealer employed over 290 people. They held the honor of being the largest single employer in town. A combination of a failing economy, changes at several automobile manufactures and the credit crunch made it impossible for them to continue. Run by former NFL star and Houston Oiler’s lineman Ray Childress, this dealership sold Chevrolet, Cadillac, Chrysler, Jeep, Hyundai, Dodge and Ford. It was consistently the largest seller of Chevy Trucks in the nation. Many of us remember the catch phrases; “We clobber big city prices”” Watermelons and Chevys are cheaper in Hempstead” and “Drive a little to save a lot.” Today this quiet farming community is recovering from its losses and continues to be positive about the future. Hempstead is known for their large juicy watermelons. Locally grown varieties such as Jubilees, Black Diamonds, Sangrias, Yellow Meats and various Hybrid Watermelons, both with seeds and without are available at local markets. In addition, melons from Hempstead are shipped around the country. Weather permitting, the first melons are ready from the middle of June and continue to show up until late summer.

Another long time retailer in Hempstead is Frazier’s Ornamental Concrete. This seller of concrete bird baths, statues, fountains and other lawn decoration has been there for a very long time. A sign outside still states; “Come on, fella. It’s time you stopped here for her.” A truly unique place to wander and

shop. Hempstead is still a viable town despite its setbacks and continues to contribute to the economy and lore that makes Texas unique. Stop in next time you are heading to Austin or Bryan and see what they have to offer.

WATERMELON RUN FOR THE FALLEN By John Engel A King-Size View It was way too early in the morning when we arrived at the truck stop outside of Prairie View. About 85 motorcycles lined up and waited for first dawn. When the sky started to light up we saw it in the sky: an AH-64 Apache Attack helicopter. Flying in from Houston it was there to escort us into Hempstead for the Third Annual run for the Fallen to honor the brave Texans that fought and died for their nation.

We arrived in Hempstead with full police and helicopter escort and parked at the football field. The Apache and its crew had some fun showing how versatile and maneuverable it could be. At the stadium, runners, families, friend and residents were treated to a very moving flag raising backed by the national Anthem and a water cannon display by the Hempstead fire Department.

Next we were honored by a performance of the Freedom Flight flyers, a group of highly skilled pilots and their aircraft. The performed several maneuvers designed to honor the fallen including a missing man flyover to remember the pilots that were no longer with us. Then a group of new recruits were marched onto the field. They were then sworn in and given their oath by Retired Brigadier General Henry Osterman. Finally, Gold Star Families and wounded warriors were escorted around the track in preparation for the 5k run/walk. Overall it was a very touching ceremony and very well planned.

From there we headed to the Hempstead Memorial and Gazebo in the center of town. We set up a flag line to welcome all the participants to the finish line. Each runner wore a registration sheet on their back. It

contained the name of the person that they were honoring, a small photo, home town, year of birth and date of death. As they crossed the finish line we cheered them on and welcomed them.

When the runners arrived they were treated to music by The Ziggy Moonshine Band playing in the Gazebo. In front of the band were paintings of fallen members of our military branches as well as a very special table. This is the Fallen Soldier’s Table (see side bar for details). Of course, no trip to Hempstead would be complete without some local watermelon and this event was no exception. Trays of ripe, red melon slices were brought around by local teens and we were able to eat our fill. After the last runner arrived a roll call was made of the fallen that could not join us. Each name of a Texas hero was read

with dignity and respect.

When the last name was called we were treated to a Texas style BBQ like no other. Plates were piled high with links, brisket, ribs, rice salad, beans and all the fixings. Everyone gathered and gave thanks for this great country and what it meant to them. Young and old, strangers and friends sat together and remembered. One final thought: as I waited in

line for my plate a young girl in front of me was talking with a friend. She could not have been much older than 14. Her friend looked at the name on her back and said; “He died in September of 2011, less than a year ago.” They decided that he was only a few years older than them and they both teared up knowing that this hero would never be able to enjoy what we did today but they could because of his sacrifice.

THE FALLE SOLDIER’S TABLE Those who have served and those currently serving the uniformed services of the United States are ever mindful that the sweetness of enduring peace has always been tainted by the bitterness of personal sacrifice. They are compelled to never forget that while we enjoy our daily pleasures, others have endured and may still be enduring the agonies of pain and internment. Before we begin our activities today, we will pause to recognize our POW’s and MIA’s. We call your attention to this small table which occupies a place of dignity and honor near the head table. It is set for one symbolizing the fact that members of our armed forces are missing from our ranks. They are generally referred to as POW’s and MIA’s. We call them comrades. They are unable to be with their loved ones and families today, so we join together to pay humble tribute to them and bear witness to their continued absence. This table, set for one, is small, symbolizing the frailty of one prisoner alone against his or her suppressors. The tablecloth is whit, the purity of their intentions to respond to their country’s call to arms. The single red rose in the vase signifies the blood they may have shed in sacrifice to ensure the freedom of our beloved United States of America. The rose also reminds us of the family and friends of our missing comrades who keep the faith while awaiting their return. The yellow ribbon on the vase represents the yellow ribbons worn on the lapels of the thousands who demand with unyielding determination a proper accounting of our comrades who are not among us today. A slice of lemon on the napkin reminds us of their bitter fate. The salt sprinkled on the plate reminds us of the countless fallen tears of families as they wait. The glass is inverted- they cannot toast with us today. The chair is empty – they are not here. The candle is reminiscent of the light of hope which lives in our hearts to illuminate the way home from their captors to the open arms of a grateful nation. Let us pray to the supreme commander that all our comrades will be back within our ranks. Let us remember and never forget their sacrifices. May God forever watch over them and protect them and their families.

THE COLLEGE SPORTS REPORT Jerry Woodley “Over there, down the street and around the corner.” “Time heals all wounds.” Sometimes that doesn’t happen. But, with passing time the pain is easier to handle. Such was the vacation to Memphis, TN. On my first visit to Memphis, TN, to the area around, “the Lorraine Motel.” There were people staying there, No Civil Rights Museum, and nobody protesting about “forget the past, live in the present, look toward the future.” It was just the place where it happened. And emotions ran VERY HIGH!

One thing for sure I was definitely looking to handle my emotions better. The other was that I would be visiting “STAX RECORDS” and “SUN STUDIOS.” Well I handled my emotions, somewhere in the middle. “The Lorraine Motel” has been joined together to the “Civil Rights Museum.” Inside is a gallery, an exhibition and video timeline of the events leading up to and what events transpired afterwards. The exhibition includes Dr. King’s room just as it was on that evening, April 4, 1968. Vehicle’s still in the lot and a plaque that

THIS WAS A GREAT VACATION! was formerly mounted on the second floor is now mounted ground level. Also included in the tour, is the rooming house across the street where James Earl Ray had a room. That exhibition has his car, his room as it was on that evening. And sight lines. (Emotions went sideways again). “STAX RECORDS”, it was wake up time. Isaac Hayes, Booker T. and MG’S, The Barkays, and the instrument of choice “the Hammond M-3.” What a day, what a day this was turning out to be. Great tour, a great video timeline, the studio where it all went down, the costumes of the entertainers, and Isaac Hayes Gold Cadillac is on

2012 JUS’ BLUES MUSIC AWARDS WEEK By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Memphis, Tennessee-The 2012 Jus’ Blues Music Foundation held their annual banquet and award week at the Hilton Hotel. The three day event started off with the Night of the Legends Awards and dinner. More than 200 people attended this year’s event with the theme to honor Blues legend Benny Latimore of Let’s Straighten it out fame and many more joined in. Years of hard work from Mr. Charles Mitchell of Atlanta who is the founder and CEO of Jus’ Blues Music Foundation Inc. is

The Ambassador of the Blues Mr. Bobby “Blue” Bland

now beginning to pay off. The board of directors should have been pleased with the support Mitchell has gathered and still working hard to be more. Stables like Millie Jackson, Denise LaSalle and Blues Legends Bobby “Blue” Bland and Bobby Rush to name a few.

Longtime songwriter and blues great Jimmy McCracklin was the first to be honored but due to an illness he was unable to make the trip from Riverside California. McCracklin who just turned 92 this month has been in the business for many years. For 20 years McCracklin band the Blues Blasters played for the

late Lowell Fulson and traveled with Joe Turner. But McCracklin is probably best known for writing B. B. King’s smash hit “The Thrill is Gone” and went on to write better than 1,000 songs with seven of them earning him Grammy’s.

Moving into the circle of awards is Denise LaSalle for here recording excellence award and she is certainly well deserving. LaSalle born in Belzoni, Mississippi but a few years later she hit the big time with the smash hit “Trapped by This Thing Called Love” went on to become her first Million seller. But in 1975 Denise moved to ABC records and she had three successful albums including the super hit “Now Run and Tell That” and many more. During the 80 LaSalle moved to Malaco Records and among her 11

wah wah sound and liked it so well he asked him to play in G octave and the rest is history. Those notes were then placed in the theme to Shaft the big movie score for Richard Roundtree.

The Jus’ Blues Legend award went to Lynn White who had an outstanding career before joining the ministry where she is the pastor of Word of Life Ministry in Southaven, Mississippi. She still sings but now its gospel songs.

Charles Bobbit is described as the Manager Extraordinaire for his work as the manger of the late great James Brown. For 41 years Bobbit managed Brown and was also hired as an advisor to the late Michael Jackson. Recently Mr. Bobbit signed as an Assistant to the Rev. Al Sharpton and working on his book entitled “Making It Happen”.

The Jus’ Blues Koko Taylor award went to blues great Sandra Hall. She started singing at the tender age of 4 years old at her father’s church Whiteville Baptist is Atlanta, Georgia. Moving up to clubs by the time she and her sister were 12 and 13 years old. They went on to form a group called the Exotics and opening for the late Johnnie Taylor and Joe Tex. Sharing the stage with such great as Bobby Rush, Etta James, John Lee Hooker and Trudy Lynn and other. Moving on to the Jus’ Blues Albert King award going to the late Charles “Skip” Pitts, who grew up being mentored by the great Bo Diddley. Having played with the likes of Gene Chandler and the Isley Brothers Pitts moved to Memphis and worked with late Isaac Hayes. Fact is Pitts was tuning his guitar and Isaac Hayes heard him doing the

2012 JUS’ BLUES MUSIC AWARDS WEEK Another one of my favorites was up next when Jus’ Blues honored Peggy Scott-Adams with the Heritage award. Born Peggy Stoutmeyer in Opp, Alabama her family moved to Pensacola, Florida. With plans of becoming a school teacher Peggy late Ben E. King once she got out of high school. They noticed her singing in a night club. After a year with King Peggy came back home and joined the Sextet’s group headed up by James and Bobby Purify. So while performing in Columbus Georgia she met JoJo Benson and the rest is history. They recorded the hit song Lover’s Holiday and had a Million dollar seller in “Pickin’ Wild Mountain Berries” and Soulshake. When that ended Peggy went to Atlanta and launched a solo career before moving to

Willie Clayton and Benny Latimore

California to help her ailing sister. She then married her late husband and took off to help with their mortuary business. When the urge hit her again Peggy then met songwriter the late Jimmy Lewis who helps setup duals with the likes of Ray Charles. Peggy and Jimmy hooked up on some very success tunes including the classic “Bill” and Help Yourself” to name a couple. Being nominated for several Grammys and being features in a Clint Eastwood movie Peggy is still going strong.

Willie Clayton took home the Johnnie Taylor Blues and Soul award. The exciting Clayton was born in Indianola, Mississippi and they moved the nearby Sunflower. Clayton had started singing when he was child and at ten years old he was performing and cut his first record at age 15. He moved to Chicago in 1969 and things begin to look up for Willie. In the 90s on Ichiban and then on Ace label Willie developed into a house hold name. His classics “Three people sleeping in my bed” and later he really got it going with Love Mechanic and I love me some you to name a couple. Johnnie Walker won the Jus’ Blues Music Business and Humanitarian award for 2012. Walker made several trips to a radio station in Grenada Mississippi and finally got a job at WNAG as receptions. But the strong minded young lady made the most of an opportunity to fill

in for a DJ who failed to show. Continuing to move up the ladder Walker was then hired by Russell Simmons and later became responsible for Def Jam Records field operation. Making Vice President of the label in 1997 Walker begins developing artist and the likes. In 2003 she moved to L.A. and took over as head of Black Music for DreamWorks record marketing the careers of Isley Brothers and others. In 2008 Walker came back to Memphis as the director of Memphis and Shelby County Music Commission. Since that time she has been honored over and over again for her hard work.

Houston native Vicki Anderson won the Jus’ Blues Soul legend award for 2012. Noted for singing with world famous James Brown Anderson toured the world as Mommie O but got her start with Gospel right in Houston. Anderson was praised by Brown but she had several singles but no albums and was never received royalties for songs written. But any rate Anderson left the group when she became a wife the Bobby Byrd and the mother to their children. Fact is their daughter Carleen Anderson is with the Young Disciples in the U.K. Even though he is back in Houston and says she truly misses her husband but enjoying going to church but don’t play her short she can still move and can still do it but she’s happy

out of the business.

The late Bobby Byrd was inducted into the Jus’ Blues Circle of Blues Legends so that means they will have an award in his honor beginning next year. Born in 1934 Byrd was versatile to change his music with the times form his growing up on Georgia and those R & B days before joining Brown and going with funk. Many hip hop acts like Jay Z sampled brought in some money and he and his wife Vicky Anderson Byrd. Byrd co-

wrote “Talking Loud and Saying Nothing” with Brown and had several others hits with King Records. Fact is Byrd mother took Brown in and they worked together for years. He and his wife toured Europe and the United States during his later years. He passed away in 2007 but not before he did a solo at James Brown funeral a year earlier. It’s about time someone profile an unsung story on Bobby Byrd and Vicky Anderson both!

2012 JUS’ BLUES MUSIC AWARDS WEEK This year’s Jack The Rapper Radio Pioneer Award went to Memphis native Beverly E. Johnson of radio station WDIA. Johnson started her radio career in 1976 at WJSU and later to KOKJ, WIMI and WKXI and several others before she came home 28 years ago at WDIA in Memphis. Bev has her very on show “The Bev Johnson Show on WDIA for the past 25 years and has a Comcast Cable show called “Affairs of the Heart Sundays at 5.30 PM. The song went number one of the R & B charts and number two on the pop charts. In 1980 Jean had several other hits on Soulin label including My Toot Toot and Keep it coming. A nurse by profession Jean is just what the doctor ordered. Fact is during our interview with her she made it clear she still has the same friends she did before she made it big and loves helping people.

Roosevelt Jamison was born in Olive Branch, Mississippi and grew up delivering groceries for the old Pantaz Drug store on Beale Street. So it would seem fit and proper that he would go on to become one of the greatest song writers and music mangers of all times. Jamison worked as a lab technician at the old John Gaston Hospital and manger of the old Interstate Blood Bank and wrote songs in his spare time. It was the song “that’s how strong my love is originally released by O.V. Wright but later performed by Otis Redding at Stax record. Jamison went on to work with James Carr and has been a driving force in the industry as a publicist and songwriter while still helping to do research on sickle cell. Recently he has Roosevelt Jamison road

in Memphis named in his honor, the see was formerly Emerald Street. Oh I almost forget the Jus’ Blues foundation honored (King) Arthur Prayther of A King-size View as the 2012 Presidents’ Award winner. “I’m totally honored and shocked that someone would care that much about what it is we are trying to do, but we plan to make the most of it and work toward making the Foundation stronger as the years go by. This is certainly a night to remember for us because we had an opportunity to interview Mr. Charles Mitchell, Trudy Lynn, Jean Knight, Benny Latimore and Duke University Zelda Clark and the legendary Bobby “Blue” Bland. TO THOSE ON THE OUTSIDE DEAR SINNER HEED THIS CALL PRECIOUS is Time. Therefore while you have time, use it to learn and do Gods Commandments for at the end of life is pay time and your pay will be according as your work has been. You will find in 2 Corinthians 5:10 the following: “For we must all appear before the judgement seat of Christ, that everyone may recive the things done in his body according to that he hath done, whether it be good or evil.” You will find in John 15:14. “Ye are my friends if ye do whatsoever I command you.” Solomon said in Proverbs 1:5 “A wise man will hear and will increase learning, and a man of understanding will attain unto wise counsel.” How shall we escape if we neglect to great Salvation: Hebrew 2:1-3 Salvation is to be worked out. It will not work itself out; God will not work it out for us. o one can work it out for us. It is the duty of man to work out his own salvation. How! With fear and trembling. Phil. 2:12. WHAT IS TRUTH? IS BAPTISM ESSENTIAL TO SALVATION? Dear reader, before starting the study of, “Is Baptism Essential To Salvation?” let us look at what seems to be the disregarded, and or forgotten command of baptism; given by God, through Jesus Christ and his apostles, and to us through their doctrine (Matt. 28:18-20; Mark 16:1416; Acts1:1-4 and 2:40-42). According to many well known religious leaders, in today’s religious world, there are many different ways given, to be right with God. These are mere men, just as I am. God the creator tells the created how to be right with Him (righteous) (see Matt.17:1-8). If you noticed, I said many different ways if there is more than one way, that’s too many according to the truth; thereby proving it is not of the truth (John 14:5-6). The same is true with faiths, but that’s another lesson. In a previous article “The Appointments”, we scripturally addressed the appointments of death and judgment (Heb.9:27-28, James 2:26), and that in the judgment one must give an account of the life lived whether good or bad (Matt.12:35-36, 2Cor.5:9-11). If good, according to God through Christ and His apostles eternal life, and if bad eternal damnation, (John 5:28-29; Rom.2:68; 2Thes.1:8-9 and Rev.21:7-8). Seeing then, these things must and will happen, what must we do to be saved, according to the truth, (Acts 2:37-42; 8:35-39; 9:4-18; 16:14-15 and verses 3034)? There are those religious leaders who profess baptism, but different types of baptisms are professed, thereby advocating division. Just as the terms ways and faiths, which are different beliefs, is false doctrine (John17:17), so are baptisms. Not only do the scriptures teach One Body, One Spirit, One Hope, but they also teach One Lord, which is The One Way, One Faith, and One Baptism and One God (John14: 6, Eph.4:4-6, Gal.3:27-29). This oneness would make us all speak the same things, and there would be no division among us in the religious world (1Cor.1:10; Phil.3:16-20), thereby making us all One in Christ (John17:20-22; Rom.10:12). We believe according to scripture, most of what is practiced in the religious world today is contrary to the instructions left by Christ, and we believe this is motivated by GAIN. Take the money, prestige and vanity out, then, we’ll see who is left standing. The proof is in the pudding. This of course, is another lesson. Man strives to be different in

faiths (which are beliefs, and or religions), in names, in doctrines, in practices, in traditions, and in baptisms. This is so like man. Man says more than one or many, but Jesus Christ the Lord says ONE and FEW (Matt.7:1215; 22:14; Acts 4:12). Who are we to believe? We best believe the one that will judge us (John5:26-29), and by what he will judge us (John12:48), even the apostle’s word (John17:20; 2Pet.3:2-3), according to truth. I hear this in the religious world today, “if you will just pray this prayer with me, and let Christ into your heart, you are saved.” There is no scripture for that, so it is of man, and not of the truth (Please read John 9:31). What happened to baptism? Jesus Christ is Lord. He sets the rules, and He needs no help from man. Remember Christ was in the creation (John1:1-14; 10:30; Col.1:12-17; Heb.1:1-8). He gave up his heavenly life to come down to this sinful world (John5:20-24; 6:26-40; 8:28-32; 8:42-47); to live a suffering lifestyle that ended most cruelly on the cross, for man’s sake. His Father was pleased to bruise him throughout his life here, and even the cross for our sake (Isaiah 53:1-12). Through the shedding of His blood on the cross, man has the opportunity of soul salvation by the remission of sin through obedience (Matt.17: 1-8; Rom.2:1-11; 6:1723; 10:16-17 see James1:21-27 and 2:14-26; 2Cor.10:1-7; 2Thes.1:1-10; Heb. 2:7-18; 5:114; 1Pet.1:22-25 and 2:1-5). This same Christ has been made the builder, Chief Corner Stone, the head of the body the church (Matt.16:13-18; 21:42; Acts4:1012; 1Cor.11:1-3; Eph.5:20-33; Col.1:1-29; 2:1-23; 1Pet.2:1-25). So again, the Lord doesn’t need our input so far as rules are concerned. We need him. What he needs from us is REPENTENCE of mind, and the OBEDIENCE to his word, through his apostles (Matt.28:16-20; 2Pet.3:1-18); that is if we want HIS GRACE and SALVATION (Acts20:32; James1:21-27). As was stated before, some that teach baptism teach different types, such as: pouring, sprinkling, immersing which is submersing. Remember, the truth says one baptism (Eph.4:5). There are scriptures backing immersing which is submersing, but none for pouring or sprinkling. As for infant baptism, we find no scriptural backing for such either, but rather scripture to the contrary. According to the truth, one must be taught (Matt.28:18-20, 15:810, Rom.10:12-14-16 and 17); must believe (John3:13-18; Rom.10:14; James1:22; James2:19-24); must repent

(Luke 13:3); must confess (Rom.10:8-10), to the point of accepting, and wanting to be buried with Christ in baptism, for the remission of sin (Mark16:16, Acts2:41-42; 18:8; 22:15-16; Col.2:10-12); thereby putting on CHRIST (Gal.3:26-29). This then makes us NEW SPIRITUAL CREATURES according to scripture (Rom. 12:1-2; 2Cor.5:16-17; 10:1-18; Eph.4:1-32; Col.3:1-17; 2Tim2:1-26). These are all impossible tasks for infants that know not even their names, let alone anything else. Some of us have read or heard this term, “out of the mouth of babes”. Usually, babes cry when the sprinkling or pouring is being done. Maybe this should clue us that they do not want it or for sure, they do not understand it. Remember, one MUST understand what is going on to be right with God, according to the word which is TRUTH. We must be careful when baptizing anyone, and for sure young ones. We must make sure that they truly understand and believe through thorough teaching, knowing what they are about to be a part of, knowing the responsibilities that goes with the Christian lifestyle (Matt.16:23-27; Luke 9:22-26 and verses 57-62; John12:2426 and 12; 44-50 etc.). For an example, when one has to be escorted and or carried by a parent or any one else for that matter, to be buried with Christ in baptism, or one that has to be made to go to worship, this should be a clue, that one might not be ready for such a step. We must be careful that it is the belief in Christ that motivates one. This means they must be ready to suffer for Christ’s sake (Phil.1:27-30), and not because their sister, brother, friend, father, or mother etc., was baptized. Not even because of the wants of the parents, or anyone else, but because they are ready to suffer and live Christ so that death will be gain (Phil.1:2021). Why would anyone, especially those proclaiming Christianity, ignore the command of baptism? Is it because it is thought to be NOT Essential To Salvation? It is for the remission of sins. It is what puts one in Christ. It is how one put on Christ (Acts 2:38; Rom.6:3-4; Gal.3:26-29), and it also now one of the many things that saves us, according to the truth (1Pet.3:21-22). To ignore Baptism or to administer it in any other fashion than what the scriptures teach, is false doctrine, and is leading precious souls in the wrong direction. To administer Baptism to anyone

that is not taught, or is too young to be taught (that does not or cannot believe) because they will not or cannot hear, repent, and confess, is not of the Apostle’s doctrine; thereby, being false. Baptism, just as all things pertaining to Christ, must be done by the instructions given by Christ through his Apostles, because when it is of man’s instructions, it leads to many souls being lost. We must examine the scriptures (Acts17:11), and ourselves to see if we are in THE faith (2Cor.13:5). We must remember that before conversion, Saul/Paul was a Pharisee born a Roman citizen. He strictly believed in the Old Law, which was given to the Jews by Moses (Acts22:3 27&28, 26:4-5, Gal.1:13-14, Phlp.3:4-7, Deut.4: 44-45, 5:13, John1:17-18). After conversion, out of the Old Law, even Paul was baptized into Christ, washing away his sins (Acts9: 18-20, Acts22:3-16). Paul also being one of our examples gives the order of things (1Cor.11:13). See also the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts8:29-39). Cornelius, a devout man according to scripture, had to be taught and then be baptized just as ALL nations MUST do, (Acts10:1-6 and verses 24-27; 44-48; Matt.28:18-20), to be right (righteous) with God, according to the TRUTH. As always; please get your bibles and follow this study: Is Baptism Essential To Salvation? We would like to take a few minutes of your time to address the most devastating issue in the world today. It has to do with the “saving” of our Souls. Of course, those who do not believe in God, this has no value to them. It has no value because they don’t believe in the Bible (scriptures), which in turn means, that they don’t believe in Heaven (eternal happinessSaved) or Hell (eternal tormentDamned). “Mark 9:43 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:” Luke 16:22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my

tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. They can’t believe in either because the world learned of both from the Bible (scriptures) or if you believe in one you have to believe in the other. I gave scriptures for Hell because there seems to be a problem with people believing in Hell, yet almost everyone believes in Heaven. As we read in the above scriptures the rich man died “and in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments”. He will not be the only one there. As a matter of fact, our Lord said most will end up there. Matt 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to (1)destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. Definition: (1)destruction-684 apoleia-2) a perishing, ruin, destruction b) the destruction which consists of eternal misery in hell Our purpose is for us, and all that we come in contact with, to be in that “few there be that find it, (eternal life)”. In order to be in that number, we have a couple of appointments we “must” make. “Heb 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:” As with any appointment, there has to be preparation which is the purpose of this document. There is a lot of “false doctrine” being taught out there giving people a false since of security that they will be one of the few there be that find it, (eternal life). There are those who have chosen positions (Bishops, Pastors, preachers, teachers) designated by God to prepare souls for the two most important appointments known to mankind. They are teaching a doctrine that says “all you have to do is believe in your heart and accept Jesus as your personal savior and you’re saved.” They also say, “You don’t have to go to worship service, you can stay home, read your Bible and pray because the church is in your heart.” Some teach that Baptism is not essential to salvation. Some teach that you need to be baptized, but if you don’t, “it’s OK, because it’s just an outward showing of an inward feeling”. We believe all of the above is “false doctrine” because it goes against what’s stated in the Bible (God’s word) which is “the Truth.” John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

WHAT IS TRUTH? IS BAPTISM ESSENTIAL TO SALVATION? We’re not going to take any chances on anyone being unprepared for those appointments with the information we pass on. I say “pass on” because it will come from the Bible (God’s word) which is “the Truth.” John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. Acts 11:26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called (1)Christians first in Antioch. Definition: (1)Christians-5546 Christianos- from 5547; a Christian, i.e. follower of Christ: KJV Christian. I don’t think many would argue the fact that preparations for these appointments (death and the judgment) starts with being a Christian. Please note the above definition of the word Christiani.e. follower of Christ. The Bible (the Word, the Truth) will show that one cannot be a Christian- i.e. follower of Christ without being “Baptized”. For those who are teaching that “Baptism is not essential to salvation”, are teaching false doctrine and those who believe it will be unprepared for these appointments (death and the judgment). Baptism has always been part of God’s plan for “Christians” and John (who was the Baptizer) was chosen to be the forerunner, preparing the way for Christ who was to come in the flesh. Matt 11:10 For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. 11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the (1)Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. Definition: (1)Baptist-910 Baptistes- from 907; a baptizer, as an epithet of Christ’s forerunner: KJV Baptist. Matt 3:13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. 14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? 15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. 16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him,

and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: 17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Note the above scriptures how our Lord thought it necessary to seek out John to be baptized of him. He sought out John because John was a “Baptizer”. Then note how John was having a problem with this: “But John forbad him, saying, “I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?” If we understand the purpose of “baptism”, then we will have a better understanding why John was having a problem with “baptizing” our Lord. Most importantly, we will understand why it is absolutely an essential part of our preparation for those two appointments (death and the judgment). Acts 19:4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of (1)repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. Definition: (1)repentance-3341 metanoia a change of mind (heart), as it appears to one who repents of a purpose he has formed or of something he has done Please note verse four, how John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance and look at the definition of the word repentance. The purpose of John’s baptism was to have the people change their beliefs and what they were doing [a change of mind (heart) as it appears to one who repents of a purpose he has formed or of something he has done] that they should believe on him which should come after Him, Christ Jesus. Now knowing the purpose of John’s baptism, can we relate to why he was having this problem understanding the necessity of baptizing our Lord? Let’s ask ourselves why would it be necessary for Christ to be baptized? There was nothing he was doing or had done that needed changing (repentance). 1 Pet 2:21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: 22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: We read in the above scriptures where he did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth. Our Lord went on to tell John why it was necessary for him (Our

Lord) to be “Baptized” in the fifteenth verse, “Matt 3:15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.” Since we know that our Lord was already righteous (“who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth”), this was the example he was setting for all who were to follow him (Christian- i.e. follower of Christ). We should also note the sixteenth verse: “16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:” and seventeenth verse how after he was “Baptized” God said: “17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” We have read about the example and now we will read about the commandments. Yes, the word of God has commanded us to be “Baptized.” Unlike the false doctrine that is being taught, we don’t have a choice. It reminds me of how Satan enticed sin from the very beginning: Gen 3:3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: Please note what’s going on today and let’s not make the same mistake. It will have us unprepared for our appointment (death and the judgment); therefore costing us our chance to be one of the few there be that find it (eternal life). God told Adam and Eve “Ye shall not eat of it (the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden) lest ye die and Satan, the serpent said, Ye shall not surely die.” We all know what happened as a result of the one word (not). Our Lord Jesus has passed on God’s instructions through his apostles, to mankind concerning “Baptism”. Matt 28:16 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. 17 And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with

you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Please note the instructions given by our Lord to his disciples: “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them….” We would have to conclude that anyone who is not following these instructions is not a disciple of Christ. Teach all nations and “Baptize” all nations. America is a nation. We are to be taught the Word of God and then “Baptized.” What is being taught today? Teaching all nations, yet baptizing them is (not) essential to salvation. Gen 3:24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life. Man was denied eternal life with God in the Garden of Eden (so he drove out the man) as a result of Satan using the word “ OT”. Let us not fall into that same trap of deception by believing that “Baptism is OT essential to salvation”, causing us to be denied eternal life with God in Heaven! Acts 2:8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? 9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, 10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.(KJV) Acts 2:14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the (1)remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Definition: (1)remission of sins-859 aphesis-from 863; freedom; (figuratively) pardon, deliverance, forgiveness, liberty, remission. Please note the above scriptures how Peter is doing “exactly” what our Lord said: teaching all nations and, baptizing them. Many different “Nations” had gathered together (“9. Parthians, and Medes, and

Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, 10. Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, 11. Cretes and Arabians…”) and Peter began to teach (“14. But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said…”). Note what he was teaching (“Acts 2:38…be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins…”). Peter followed the instructions of our Lord Jesus and hereby we know that Peter was a (Christian- i.e. follower of Christ) teacher. Therefore, we must conclude that any teacher who does not follow this pattern “cannot” be a (Christian- i.e. follower of Christ) teacher. According to scripture, Cornelius was a devout man that feared God with all of his house; which gave much alms to the people and prayed to God always. His prayers and alms went up for a memorial before God. They even received the Holy Ghost. You would think (see “thought” Prov.14:12 and 16:25; Isa.55:69) that all of these things would have made them right (righteous) with God. But they did not because Cornelius sent for the Apostle Peter, as he was told by the Lord to do. All that were present there, after they heard ALL that the Lord commanded the Apostle Peter and had even received the Holy Ghost; Peter yet commanded them to be BAPTIZED in the name of the Lord. This made them ALL, including the Apostle Peter, right (righteous) with God. Because they all had done at that time: what God had commanded. Because, Cornelius and those that were assembled, had SINS that had NOT been REMITTED (pardoned) by BAPTISM. Acts 10:1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band, 2 A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway. (KJV) Acts 10:4 And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God. 5 And now send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter: 6 He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side: he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do.

WHAT IS TRUTH? IS BAPTISM ESSENTIAL TO SALVATION? 7 And when the angel which spake unto Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants, and a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually; 8 And when he had declared all these things unto them, he sent them to Joppa. (KJV) Acts 10:24 And the morrow after they entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius waited for them, and had called together his kinsmen and near friends. 25 And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him. 26 But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man. 27 And as he talked with him, he went in, and found many that were come together. (KJV) Acts 10:33 Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God. (KJV) Acts 10:47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days. (KJV) Please note why Peter told them to be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins. ote the definition of remission- pardon, deliverance, forgiveness, liberty, remission. It is “Absolutely” necessary that “every one of us be Baptized” as Peter commanded, because “every one of us” have sinned: Rom 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; I Jn 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. I Jn 1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. Without the water there is no access to the cleansing power of the BLOOD, for they are in conjunction one with the other: “John 19:32 Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: 34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. 35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth

that he saith true, that ye might believe.” “I Jn 5:5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? 6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. 7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one. 9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son. 10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that (1)hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.” Definition: (1)He that hath the Son hath life-2192 echo (ekh’o);including an alternate form scheo (skheh’-o); used in certain tenses only); a primary verb; to hold (used in very various applications, literally or figuratively, direct or remote; such as possessions; ability, relation, or condition), 1) to have, that is, to hold; to have (hold) in the hand, in the sense of wearing, to regard or consider or hold as 4) to hold oneself to a thing, to lay hold of a thing, to adhere or cling to, to be closely joined to a person or a thing: KJV— be (able, X hold, possessed with), accompany, use, continuity:1. The state or quality of being continuous. 2. An uninterrupted succession or flow; a coherent whole. 3.a. A detailed script or scenario consulted to avoid discrepancies. The Sanctification and Cleansing of the body, the church with the WASHING of WATER, must be according to the WORD; which is Jesus Christ (John1:1; 1John5:7). “Eph 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. 24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not

having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. Without being buried with Christ in water by the word, there is no “circumcision of Christ made without hands”; there is no power, “operation” of God, and if no operation of God there is no “Baptism”: Col 2:11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the (1)circumcision of Christ: 12 (2)Buried with him in (3)baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the (4)operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. Definitions (1)by the circumcision of Christ-4061 peritomecircumcised b) metaphorically: 1) used of Christians separated from the unclean multitude and truly consecrated to God 2) the extinction of passions and the removal of spiritual impurity. (2)Buried with him-4916 sunthapto (soon-thap’-to);from 4862 and 2290; to inter in company with, i.e. (figuratively) to assimilate spiritually (to Christ by a sepulture as to sin), to bury together with; For all who in the rite of believer’s baptism are plunged into the water, thereby declare that they put faith in the expiatory death of Christ for the pardon of their past sins. Therefore, Paul likens immersion to a burial by which the former sinfulness is buried, that is, utterly taken away: KJV— bury with. (3)in baptism-909 baptismos (bap-tis-mos’); from 907; ablution (ceremonial or Christian): KJV— baptism, washing. 907 baptizo (bap-tid’-zo);from a derivative of 911; to immerse, submerge; to make overwhelmed (i.e. fully wet); used only (in the N. T.) of ceremonial ablution, especially (technically) of the ordinance of Christian baptism: KJV— Baptist, baptize, wash. (4)operation of God 1753 energeia (en-erg’-i-ah); from 1756; efficiency (“energy”): KJV— operation, strong, (effectual) working. 1756 energes (en-er-gace’);from 1722 and 2041; active, operative: KJV— effectual, powerful. Without “Baptism” there cannot be any pardon, deliverance, forgiveness, liberty, remission of sins. To teach that one need not be “Baptized” would have one totally unprepared for those two appointments (death and the judgment). He will have died (death) in his sins and our Lord said: “John 8:21 Then said

Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come.” Then when we stand before God for that second appointment (the judgment) with those sins, the scriptures says: “Rom 6:23 For the (1)wages of sin is (2)death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Definitions: (1)wages-3800 opsonion metaphorically, wages: hire or pay of sin. (2)death2288 thanatos in the widest sense, death comprising all the miseries arising from sin, as well physical death as the loss of a life consecrated to God and blessed in him on earth, to be followed by wretchedness in hell Please note the definition of those words. We’re being told that the pay for our sins will ultimately be Hell (eternal torment-Death). We do have another option, Heaven (eternal life-Saved): but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Please note that it is the gift of God and he says how he will “give” it: through Jesus Christ our Lord Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. Rom 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.(KJV) Gal 3:27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 1 Pet 3:21 The like figure whereunto even (1)baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: ote the definition of baptism, neither sprinkling nor pouring is found!

Definitions: (1)baptism-908 baptisma (bap’-tis-mah); from 907; immersion, submersion baptism (technically or figuratively): KJV— baptism. c) used of Christian baptism; a rite of immersion in water as commanded by Christ, by which one after confessing his sins and professing his faith in Christ, having been born again by the Holy Spirit unto a new life, identifies publicly with the fellowship of Christ and the ekklesia. 907 baptizo (bap-tid’-zo); from a derivative of 911; to immerse, submerge; to make overwhelmed (i.e. fully wet); used only (in the N. T.) of ceremonial ablution, especially (technically) of the ordinance of Christian baptism: KJV— Baptist, baptize, wash. 911 bapto (bap’-to);a primary verb; to overwhelm, i.e. cover wholly with a fluid; in the N. T. only in a qualified or specially, sense, or (by implication) to stain (as with dye): KJV— dip. After we have been baptized into Christ [following Christ’s example and command thereby becoming a (Christian- i.e. follower of Christ)], we then must assemble ourselves with other (Christians- i.e. followers of Christ): “Heb 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” This must be done “every” first day of the week for Lord’s Day Worship service whether in the home, building or outside. “Acts 20:5 These going before tarried for us at Troas. 6 And we sailed away from Philippi after the days of unleavened bread, and came unto them to Troas in five days; where we abode seven days. 7 And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.” Col 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the (1)name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.(KJV) Definition: (1)name of the Lord Jesus-3686 onoma (on’-omah);from a presumed derivative of the base of 1097 (compare 3685); a “name” (literally or figuratively) [authority, character] 2) the name is used for everything which the name covers, everything the thought or feeling of which is aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing, remembering, the name, that is,

Acts 8:12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.(KJV)

1 Cor 11:1 Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ. 2 Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you. 3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.(KJV)

Acts 9:17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. 18 And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was (1)baptized.(KJV)

Again Dear reader as always, the purpose of these articles is to seek the TRUTH according to THE WORD, thereby exposing ERROR, for the purpose of saving our souls. We believe this is best done by definitions and the preponderance of scriptures; which is having superior weight, force, importance, or influence

of scripture. Again we believe this allows SCRIPTURE to INTERPRET SCRIPTURE, thereby allowing a better understanding on that topic. Again, thank you so much for your interest in the WORD of TRUTH; GRACE and SALVATION; John 17:17-21; Acts

20:29-32; James1:21-25. After all it is our MAP to HEAVEN and away from HELL! E-mail Address: bibletruth1@sbcglobal.net Fax #: (281) 987-9703

800 PLUS ATTENDS THE 33RD ANNUAL PVILCA BANQUET ON RIVER WALK HYATT REGENCY Part 1 By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View San Antonio, Texas-With more than 800 people jammed inside the Hyatt Regency Hotel on the River Walk the Prairie View Interscholastic League Coaches Association held their 33rd annual banquet. It was a tremendous feeling knowing that all these people came out the honors those who went into the Hall of Honor and those who also went into the Hall of Fame. Board Chairman Robert Brown was so pleased despite of the tired look on his face he knew they had broken new ground. It’s high time they get a real sponsor to help them with the rising cost for the banquet and it was be a real good deal for a company to assist them in their efforts. The late Walter Day, Donald Grace, Marion T. Jones and Johnny Peoples would have been very proud to see this day. From their humble beginning in 1983 when only 25 people were in attendance when the held the first one. Now many years later the banquet has moved to being in a class by itself. Remembering the Past with Pride is the theme and a well deserved one to say the least. With the start of the football season just around the corner many people feel this is an excellent

way to get into the new school year. The banquet is always the Saturday before the beginning of the Texas High School Coaches Association annual meeting school. This is one year we think the PVILCA out drew the THSCA dinner in attendance numbers. That’s true testament of just how important this is. For those of you who missed it you can find some interviews as well as pictures on Jerry L Woodley’s College Sport Report by going to www.kingsizeview.com and clicking on Jerry Woodley banner and stroll down to the PVILCA interviews. We know you will be glad you did. So much information and we are honored to have been the Master of Ceremony once again. Clearly it is the highlight of our year’s work to be in the room with so many legends of the past and present. We will be forever grateful for the opportunity to serve in this capacity and look forward to the 2013 year. Former Kashmere and San Francisco running back Delvin Williams was the guest speaker. Williams graduated from the University of Kansas before joining the 49ers in 1974. After breaking their single season rushing mark he moved over to Miami and he repeated the

course and became the first NFL back to rush for more than 1,000 yards with two different teams. His 1258 yards set in Miami lasted for 25years and it made Williams the first to be named to the Pro Bowl from both the NFC and the AFC. Keep in mind he was trained right in Houston under the watch eyes of the late Billy Matthews. Currently Williams work in the San Francisco area with youths, sports and drug abuse presentation programs. His “Pros for Kids” organization ranks high with any in the country. Williams do not hide the fact he has visions of someday coming back to Houston for good. Having graduated in the required 4 years from Kansas with a B S degree in education in 1974 is one of the things Williams is most proud of. During his speech Williams mention the commitment it takes to be the best in the NFL and to have played 8 years and having operations more than 15 times in his career he stated it’s a big price to pay. “You must be ready for action and when I was a rookie I played with a broken risk and it taught me to be in shape and ready to go when the season starts because the game is physical and if you are not ready you will go down. More importantly

King Arthur warns the crowd to get ready to meet some great legends

Carl Elridge Anderson Sr.

Williams stressed the importance of getting a good education and being able to compete in the world’s ever changing job market. The long list of inductees for 2012 starts out with Carl Eldridge Anderson a native of Malakoff and later coached at Lincoln colored high school in Malakoff from 1946-1960. During this stretch his team won 96 of 117 games and took the state title in 1954 after finishing second in 1953. Jimmie Lee Emanuel is a native of Oakwood, Texas went on to graduate from P.V. in 1949 with a BS and later got his Masters in 1957. The multi-talented coach went on to coach at Attucks and went to state three straight years in basketball. Then over at Mary Brown where he won the state in football in 1963 with all this following joining the U S Army in 1943. Coy Kenneth Limbrick Sr. a Beaumont native and CharltonPollard graduate who went on to graduate from TSU. For more than 40 years he coached in the HISD. He spent 23 years as the head track coach and did an excellent job of bringing people together through his leadership skills.

Former FL great Delvin Williams-guest speaker Next in line is former Houston Madison coach Ray Seals, the Sealy native who spent 46 years in the HISD has a much decorated record. One of the great backs of all times in his playing days at Sealy and at P.V. before an injury cut short his career Seals highly respected by his peers. During his last 15 years he was clearly the HISD best coach. One of many honors included the NFL Don Shula National coach of the year. Seals have also been inducted into the THSCA Hall of Fame as well as the PVILCA Hall of Fame. Winning the Houston coach of the year for 10 years and some of that time was when he coached the great Vince Young.

COACH OF THE WEEK-BEVERLY D. HUMPHREY-DALLAS LANCASTER By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View San Antonio, Texas- Born the niece of the late legendary Walter Day, Beverly Day was a brilliant high school track star at Dallas, Lincoln High School. The lovely and talented Day set a 100 yard dash record that still stands today. After graduating Day went on to attend Prairie View under the leadership of the great Barbara Jacket, after turning down offers from USC, UCLA and many other schools. For four years Day went on to

become an All-American and set several records in the 4 by 100 meters, 4 by 400 relay and the sprint melody relay also. While at P.V. Day went on to win PVAMU Newcomer of the Year, most outstanding sophomore and most valuable junior. The talented Day went on to qualify for the Olympic trials in the 100, 400 and made the finals in the 200 meters. She became the first African American head coach in any sport in Greenville, Texas. She later took over the program at Lancaster and broke the race barrier there also. In the past 24 years she has simply dominated the sport. So much so they actually renamed the district’s football stadium to the Beverly D, Humphrey Tigers Stadium in 2007. For more than 29 years Beverly has been happily married to Charles A. Humphrey II and they are members of New Life Fellowship Church in Lancaster, Texas. She is a member of Delta Theta Sorority Inc.

She has been honored as a member of the PVILCA Hall of Fame as a member of the Bridging the Gap this year. Mrs. Humphrey coached the Lancaster track and field team to another state title.

YARD SOUND STUDIO

Fact is that was her 9th state title and Mrs. Humphrey is also the Athletic Director at Lancaster School District. “This is the highest honor I could have received and I just want to thank the PVILCA for this honor” .As we talked more with Coach Humphrey we learned some of her secrets. “I’ve always felt if I could get a one school town I could be successful”. Crediting the student body at Lancaster with having some very hard working and talented group of

girls with her success coach Humphrey said she is truly grateful. “I want to thank my Husband (Charles A. Humphrey) of 29 years and I’m proud to wear your name and the rest of my family and the Lancaster School District family and the PVILCA for this honor”. Since 2003 the Lancaster School District has won 16 state championships and Coach Humphrey has nine of them with girls’ track and field including the 2012 title.

We closed by asking Beverly what it is like being the niece of the legendary Walter Day. “My uncle was an inspiration in my life because I was always trying to outdo him but we talked all the time learning so much from him”. We learned discipline is the key to the success Day-Humphrey and her staff over the years. That she learned from the legendary Barbara Jacket while at P.V. during her glory years!

In The Love Corner By Stevie T

HEY LOVERS! Hey Lovers, wanna be lovers, and those looking for love. More and more I’m finding people are satisfied without having a serious love life or relationship. Are we becoming afraid of commitments? It’s not just men anymore, women are beginning to take a stance against committed relationships. The passing of the torch so to speak to the next generation, we find women are financial and more emotionally independent. This simply means women don’t really need a man to validate who they are. They

just simply validate themselves. Don’t get me wrong, there a lot of women who would love have a strong handsome man to be in their lives, but it’s not a priority. Heck women of today don’t even need a man to have children. Fellas have anyone ever ask you to be a donor. Wake up guys before it is too late. Women are not only catching up they are passing us. Let’s look at some of the factors that make this possible. (1) Women’s self-esteem is thru the roof. They have support groups, their BFF’s and

Oprah. (2) Education plays a big role in the modern woman. Fifty years ago the number of women getting degrees was very dismal. It seemed the only degree they were getting was the MRS. Degree if you know what I mean. You know the saying “Knowledge is Power” ( I am a woman hear me roar in numbers too big to ignore). You catch my drift. And (3) Financial independence , making equal, or even more than the male counterpart. You ever hear of stay at home dads..Zow didn’t see that one coming. So why need a man at all, not to mention competion from the same sex. Ever lose your woman to another woman…Deblilatating. Even though replacing the man in your love life has gotten easier, there is nothing better than a true love between a man and a woman. I think that’s the way God planned it. So don’t give

up on a committed relationship filled with love and happiness. If it is what makes you happy, by all means go for it. Make sure you join EZ and myself for “In the Love Corner Live” on Wednesdays at 8pm. It’s real talk about Love and relationships and you get a chance to weigh in. We always have special guest, Like Carletta Sheppard, and Sierra Leone last month, and maybe you’d like to be a special guest. Call between the hours of 7pm and Midnight and we’ll sign you up. Just ask for Stevie T. If your church , school, or organization is having an event and would like for me attend or it be advertised on my show send the info to KCOH 5011 Almeda, 77004 c/o Stevie Goodtime T. The top five love songs for the month are 1 Thru the Fire

Chaka Kahn 2 I Can’t stop Loving You Kem 3 Chocolate Legs Eric Bene’t 4 So Amazing Luther Vandross 5 Didn’t I blow your Mind This Time Delfonics. Don’t forget it’s the beginning of the school year Parents, make sure you stay involved in children’s school life.. If there are things you just can’t help with don’t be afraid to ask, whether it school work, after school care, or transportation. There is help somewhere to found. Don’t forget to observe the speed zones and of course no texting while driving. Let’s make it a good year and a safe year. So until next time put a little love in your heart, the look of love in your eyes, and never let a day go by without telling someone that you love them even if that someone is You.

The Way I See It

FIND SOMETHING ELSE TO ARGUE ABOUT

By BIG John Chandler It is election time and every two-bit phony (politician-I can’t stand any of them) is out and about with their fraud promises of making life better for each and everyone of us. So reading my email as I do, I came across an email from a friend that encouraged me to look at this column regarding Allen High School’s new football stadium. I was floored to say the least at this magnificent building costing right at $60 million dollars. Yes the price tag is $59.6 million is

Page 28

A King-Size View

amazing; especially for a high school stadium. I am still amazed in a sluggish economy that anything of this magnitude can be paid for and built. There is a massive video board in the end zone and a three tiered press box on the home side of the field. The home opener, sold out for months, is against the defending 5A Division I state champion and rival South Lake Carroll. It’s the most talked about game in the metroplex along side the season opener

Dallas/New York Giants. As a high school football fan I’m impressed anytime something is done to better the conditions for our high school athletes. But it was the second part of this column that bugged me along with all the blog comments. Critics bombed Allen school district officials for building this stadium. The complained with so many districts having to cut their budgets for all related education supplies, how could these officials have the absolute nerve to build a sport stadium? How could they put athletics ahead of academics? This is typical for the state of Texas. I began to laugh out loud but I noticed a small amount of anger in my

gut. Thankfully I can express my thoughts in my column and what I’m about to say may anger some of you but remember my column is titled ‘THE WAY I SEE IT’. That doesn’t mean I’m right or wrong, just the way I see things; thru my own perception of life. So here is my take on this and why I see it this way. I support the Allen Independent School District for building this stadium for one reason-the citizens voted for the bond that had the stadium as part of the bond issue. Over 61% of the voters voted for this bond issue. This was something they wanted. Many of the parents had trouble seeing their children in the band, drill team and other types of activities. There were other items budgeted including a new auditorium and a transportation building. This was an outstanding job by Allen officials to sell the bond issue to the voters and to the votes for looking at the bond issue piece by piece and making a decision whether to approve or deny it. It was their

responsibility (voters) and the voted for out with a clear majority. To criticize this school district is simply foolish. The community supported the bond and they have a beautiful 18,000 seat stadium. Trust me it’s not the largest high school stadium in Texas. There are many people around the fruited plains that hate sports period. They have the right to feel that way. I don’t argue with them; support what you like and boycott things you don’t. That’s cool as long as you don’t try to stop others from feeling the way they do about the same issues. Allen has spoken; the bond has passed and the stadium will open officially in a few weeks. To the critics, find something else to argue about. To quote an old favorite rap song by RUN DMC-YOU TALK TO MUCH/YOU NEVER SHUT UP! That’s just the way I see it!

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK SHANNON LILLY JR. - DALLAS KIMBALL NAVARRO JUNIOR COLLEGE

A King-Size View By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View San Antonio, Texas-As more than 800 people came to the 33rd Annual Prairie View Interscholastic League Coaches Association Hall of Honor and Hall of Fame Banquet at the Hyatt Regency on the River Walk in San Antonio, Texas. Shannon Lilly Jr. a graduate of

Dallas Kimball High School was honored as the male high school athlete of the year. The well rounded athlete won three state titles at Kimball during his four years there, including the last two most valuable player honors to go along with helping his team to victory. “It’s been a wonderfully blessed high school career for me and I feel if the guys stay focused they can do it again without us”. Lilly was always noted for making big plays at the end of games and did the same thing to help his team win two straight titles and a clear choice for MVP both times. “We just worked hard at Kimball and our coach (Royce Johnson) does a good job of getting inside your head and making you think as you play the game”. Lilly went on to say he loved playing with the group of guys that won the title in three of their four years at the school known for its basketball greatness.

for us, what a way to close out my senior year being honored by the PVILCA”. Having seen his father coaching, Shannon says he thinks coaching will definitely be in his future as well. “Well since my dad coached and I’ve been playing basketball all my life and learned the game so well, it would be great to pass that on to younger players”. Shannon Lilly Jr. definitely believes in God and is a member at Full Gospel Church in Lancaster, Texas. He is also a member in Pals Group an organization of the top twenty seniors who mentor junior high school students. In closing Lilly said happy is probably the best way to describe the way he feels about how his high school career ended and he is looking forward to the next level of action!

Now it’s off to Navarro Junior College for Lilly but he is still hoping to get into a major Division I school later on. “Really to be honest with you I didn’t get a lot of offers so I have to go the Junior College route but a year or two from now I feel I will get a shot at a D.I school”. After talking with his mother Gloria and Dad Shannon Lilly Senior, he has taken an interest in Dentistry and he thinks being a Dentist would not be a bad profession.

KE’ANDREA WILSON-DALLAS LANCASTER

STUDENT OF THE WEEK Dallas, Texas-Here we go again with another student profile in our series of Fiesta Student of the Week. She’s the charming and talented daughter of Angela Wilson and goes by the name of Ke’Andrea Wilson. For years she wanted very much to be part of a state championship girl’s

track and field team. That dream came true for Ke’Andrea as she was part of Coach Beverly DayHumphrey’s Class 4A Lancaster Lady Tigers 2012 title team. “I noticed when I first got here Coach Humphrey and her staff were very organized at practice and it gave me a chance to get

into a grove with this program. Wilson took advantage of her time off when she was injured into looking at colleges and we discovered Louisiana-Monroe. “I really enjoyed my visit there and it’s not too far from home so I think it will work out well for me over in Louisiana, plus it’s not far from my grandparents’ home”. On Sundays you’ll find Ke’Andrea down at God’s Commission Church and she says she can’t sing but wish she could. “The most important thing about this is we learn so much about God in church and it just makes you a better all around person”. Holding a 4.0 G.P.A. with English as a favorite subject, Ke’Andrea feels the fact Louisiana-Monroe has one of the country’s finest nursing programs might help her make up her mind on her major. “My goal is to get into school and then declare a major so I can better myself and help my mother, my sister and my brother as well”. In her spare time Wilson likes

reading and says her English teachers did a fine job of making her feel good about educating herself. “Really sir it was a very good learning environment and that’s one of the things I’m going to miss from Lancaster High School. Crediting her mother with being her most driving force in life Wilson said she simply made it clear she had to make good grades if she wanted to run track. “My Mom has always pushed me to do my best in class and to work hard to get a scholarship so I can better myself”.

now blacks can have confidence in getting to the top of the ladder”. In closing the talented young woman thanked her mother and coach Humphrey for their love and support. We know she will do well at Louisiana-Monroe both in the classroom and on the track!

Wilson added if she had it to over again she would not change a thing because she understands God is in control of her life. “The Lord has things happen for a purpose and I’ve done my best and would do it the same way if I had it to do over”. On the subject of Barack Obama being the first African American President of the United States of America Ke’Andrea said; it goes to show no matter where you come from you can make it to the top and he’s done that so
