Behind The Wheel With THE KING (Arthur Prayther)

CHEVY TRAVERSE LTZ Irving, Texas-Making the trip to the Dallas area for the PVILCA 34th Annual Hall of Fame banquet we took to the road behind the wheel of the new Chevrolet Traverse LTZ. It marked the first time we tested the vehicle and found I to be a solid built SUV with some good numbers. To start with the vehicle is powered by a proven 3.6 Liter direct injected V6 engine producing 288 horsepower at 6300 RPM and 270 lbs per foot of torque at 3400 RPM. This computes to 17 miles per gallon in the city and 24 miles per gallon on the highway while accommodating 7 passengers comfortably. Our test vehicle came with captain chairs providing some individuality for the riders and since it was four of us making the trip that was just right. The vehicle comes with an industry first center air bag along with head curtain side air bags for all seating rows. Yes this baby is about as safe as they come with a 5-star

rating by the NHTSA. With 5star rating for driver and front passenger and front and rear seat in side impact accidents as well. To round it out the rollover gets a 4-star rating. With honors for top Safety pick for 2013 the new Traverse also has a 500 miles plus driving range. Keep in mind we are talking about a vehicle that has 77 per cent of its part from the United States and Canada. The final assembly point for the Traverse LTZ is Lansing, Michigan. This makes it pretty well home grown. Once you are inside the new Traverse with 7-passenger seating with 2nd row captain’s chairs and 3rd row split bench seat. The driver has power adjuster 8-way that includes power recline, lumbar and memory setting. This also include outside mirrors and a front passenger 8-way power seat just like the driver has. We are talking about a vehicle that came in

at just over 44 Grand now. Throw in leather appointed seats with heated and cooled feature climates. The steering wheel is both tilt and telescopic and there are arm rests built into the seat backs. They simply fold down when needed and fold up when not in use. With our test we got a good look in more than one situation and found the new Traverse to our liking to say the least. The audio system came with a bright 6.5 inch color touch screen for radio and Sirius XM/HD, USB, CD, and MP3 you name it Traverse has it. A color touch navigation system with XM navi-traffic and a free three months trial. All this rolls to the ground on road gripping performance allseason tires circulating around 20” Aluminum Wheels. There is tailoring equipment option as well as a rear seat entertainment setup. Excellent for a family with small children and perhaps you can even talk the grand parents along for the family vacation. If you are in the market please take a look at the new Chevy Traverse because it certainly could be in your future budget. In closing let me please add with the third row seats fold flat the max cargo room swells to 116.3 cubic feet.

TOYOTA PRIUS C SUPER VALUE AT 21 GRAND By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Growing up in the country we use to hear our mother say buy things that is the more value for your money. Keep in mind money was one thing we didn’t have very much of so we paid strict attention. Now years later we are still taking a look at the value for the money and the Pius C was Toyota gives you that and then some. Taking for example the new Prius C with Hybrid Synergy Drive System with SULEV is powered by a 1.5 liter DOHC 16 valve with VVT-I with Ev/Eco models and ECVT. This system cranks out 53 miles per gallon in the city and 46 miles per gallon on the highway. Please don’t lose the fact we talking about a vehicle that simply cost less than 20 Grand standard. Powers rolls to the pavement on P 175/55 R 15 inch tires wrapped around a steel wheel. Electric power steering helps make the Prius C a joy to ride in. When it comes to safety the new Prius has a government rating of 4-star with 4-star rating all across the board in all catagories. That’s probably a first a vehicle in this class. Safety features includes a full set of air bags including knee bags for driver and front passengers as well as seat cushions to name a couple. Outside the Prius sports some new styling as the couple continue to get attention and the vehicle sales have gone over the Ten Million mark. Our test model the

THE A-NOTE with Aaron Watson It takes a pretty strong person to point out their own faults. It takes an even stronger person to overcome their faults. In this article, we will discuss the one thing that kills more dreams and hopes than anything else. That one thing is self honesty. Self honesty is the very foundation that holds and secures every other thing that can be built on the way to success. You can make it all the way to what seems to be the top only to have it slip away because your foundation was built on sand. Self honesty is the essence of all

true freedoms. No issue can slow you down once you decide that you are not going to fall victim to what you are afraid of. To be honest is to be comfortable and to be comfortable is to be at peace with yourself and your surroundings. You can not work on being a better person, friend, or leader if you are not willing to first say, "As it currently stands I am not as good as I could be in the area of _________." A word about fears. Understand that this is not an easy conversation, because most of our fears

THE ORANGE JUICE THEORY begin when we had to cope with things as children. The fact that abuse happens in childhood is very real. To survive at any age you may think that you have to hide certain feelings to deal with the pain by withdrawing yourself from the situation or acting like the issue doesn't exist. The reality is to be told by a loved one that you are ugly, that you are a dumb or even worse to be used as the object of someone else's pleasure is very hard to understand or question as a child or an adult. A word about how we cope. As an adult no one wants to admit that they have low self-esteem, or that they buy expensive cars, jewelry and houses that they can't afford because in some

CRYSTAL WINDHAM: DIRECTOR OF DESIGN GM NORTH AMERICA - PASSENGER CAR INTERIORS Crystal Windham was named the Director of North American Passenger Car Interior Design in November of 2008, becoming the first African American female director in GM Design’s history. Since joining GM in 1994, Windham’s assignments have included multiple brands and vehicle programs in the Michigan studios and special project work abroad. “As designers, we’ve been empowered,” says Windham. “There is an exciting renaissance at GM and I am thrilled to be a part of it.” The body of work has not gone unnoticed by the industry – receiving an Emerging Leader Award in October of 2011 from

Outside the studio, Windham connects students to higher education and careers in art and design through GM Design’s You Make a Difference program. “I credit a teacher for encouraging me to pursue automotive design,” said Windham. “Conversations and experiential programs have the power to change lives.” Windham holds an Industrial Design degree from the College for Creative Studies (CCS) and an MBA from the University Detroit Mercy.

way it makes them feel better about themselves. To admit the fact you surround yourself with people you know do not love you because its too painful to be alone. To admit that you turned to drugs and/or alcohol to deaden your senses to the pain you feel on a daily bases. These things at very minimum keep you from being honest with yourself and others, thus hiding who you really are and who you wish to be. Before you can move forward in building "Corporation You" a decision has to be made and it starts with this pledge: "I understand and acknowledge that I have gone through some issues, and acknowledge that those issues may or may not have been my fault but from this point going forward I will control the way I respond to the feelings I have. I will respond in a positive manner and be an example to those that are not yet strong. I will never try to be what I am not, but never ever be afraid to show who I really am." Motivate yourself, for that is the only true form of motivation, no one else can do it for you. As mentioned in the previous article remember you have shareholders

in your success so you are not alone. If at this point you don't know who they are continue to grow and they will find you, don't worry. It is quite simple, once you become self motivated you can take 99 unmotivated people vs one self motivated person and, all the time hands down, the self motivated person wins. Be that ONE not the 99! So what is the Orange Juice Theory? You have orange soda, orange drink, and fresh orange juice. They all look orange, they all taste like orange, and they all serve the same purpose. To the naked eye there is no real difference, but after further examination you see that orange soda contains no orange at all and is dead. The orange drink contains less than 2% real orange juice and is dead. Only 100% fresh squeezed orange juice is alive and contains the building blocks for good health, growth, and nutrition. So as it is for the orange it is too for the human being. You can look like and act like success, but in order to grow you have to be 100% alive and be 100% you. And it starts with self honesty.

TIGERS TO GO AGAINST THE ODDS AGAIN IN 13 By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View As the college football season begins on the weekend of August 31st the TSU Tigers will go against the odds again. Due to NCAA sanctions the Tigers were unable to have a spring game setting them further back. But second year coach Darrell Asberry has hopes of the Tigers

making him proud. The coach who spent the last 6 years at Shaw University and won titles after his career as at QB at Jackson State ended a few years ago. Asberry went on to play in the CFL and the WLA before getting into coaching. “We have a group of kids who are willing to work hard and that’s a good sign for us because not having a spring game really

set us back a bit”. The Tigers will open with 16 seniors, 21 juniors, 17 sophomores and 24 freshmen this season on August 31st at BBVA stadium against Prairie View. Banking a lot of Jun-Co Daveonn Porter to carry the load at Running back, the Tigers hoop for the best as they try and rebuild from the NCAA sanctions that put them in the hole for the past two years!

Open Book I’ve always prided myself on being transparent an open book however, over the years I’ve learned to be careful of what you share and with whom you share it with. I often talk of being positive and getting to a positive state in life. What I’ve come to realize is how challenging it is to stay there once you’ve arrived, with daily interruptions, people cutting you off in traffic, and negative news reports it can sometimes become a task to stay on course.

You often expect negative feedback from people that don’t really know you and sometimes from perfect strangers, but when the negativity comes from lovers, friends and even family, you can really be caught off guard. There are people you’ve shared personal details of your life with that take that information and use those details to take shots at your self esteem or knock you off balance just when you are finding your way in life again.

We often are just venting or needing someone to listen, not really looking for them to solve the problem and they somehow find a way of bringing up these issues well after we’ve managed

to bury them and move on, only to have those old wounds reopened. Which has brought me to place now where some things are better left to be worked out in your head and heart. It’s not that I’m being secretive instead, I’m choosing not to burden others with something that might just be merely a phase or a temporary moment of sadness in my life. I challenge you today to take a walk instead of picking up the phone, to say a prayer instead of letting loose all your anger or pain about your current situation. There is a time and place for CERTAIN, things to be shared such as I’m looking for a job do you have any leads or I need my car repaired can you refer me to a reputable shop? You should feel safe when you share your innermost feelings, not afraid that it will come back to haunt you in your weakest moments. Affairs of the heart should be guarded, not to keep secrets but to make you a stronger believer in your own choices and to depend on GOD, the only one that can really help you through it all anyway.

Out and About with John Engel

THE BRAYS PROJECT

I have seen the trucks for months hauling load after load of dirt from the location near Highway 6 and the Sam Houston Tollway. Bit by bit the excavation grew until it looked like a small lake. In fact, it went all the way from Highway 6 to Eldreidge. Recently I stopped by and looked at the sign. This is the final part of The Brays Project.

After Tropical Storm Allison in June of 1989 devastated our area with as much as 30 inches of rain in some areas, the United States Corps of Engineers (Corps) working with the Harris County Flood Control District (HCFCD) combined forces to see what could be done to reduce the effects of the flooding if we received a rainfall like this again. The Addicks Reservoir has been a substantial part of our flood control plan for years. Extending both north and south of I-10 this watershed was overwhelmed by the rainfall. Parts of Highway 6 along with the entire area of George Busch Park were closed for over a week until the water receded.

Sam Houston Tollway on the south and Eldridge Drive on the east. This is an extension of the Eldridge Stormwater Detention Basin which was started about 10 years ago. It is the third and final regional detention basin in the project and also the largest.

Neighborhoods within the Cities of Bellaire, Houston, Southside Place, West University Place, Meadows Place, Missouri City and unincorporated areas of Harris County, as well as the Texas Medical Center, Rice University, University of Houston, Texas Southern University, Hermann Park and the Houston Zoo will see advantages from Project Brays. In addition to reducing flood risks, Project Brays will also work to bring much needed greenspace and recreational amenities to the communities along Brays Bayou. This will include gazebos, picnic areas, hiking and biking trails and other facilities.

basin project is complete, the basin will retain approximately 1.5 billion gallons of stormwater that otherwise might flood homes and businesses and will help reduce flooding risks for those who live downstream and work along the banks of Brays Bayou including large parts of Houston. The cost of this phase alone is $12.5 million and involves the removal of about 2 million cubic yards of soil. This soil is being used to build the Highway 99 toll road on the west side of town. The Eldridge basin also has 340 acres of usable greenspace for nearby communities. Harris County Precinct 3’s Archbishop Joseph A. Fiorenza Park is located at the southeast corner of the basin site and features a jogging/walking trail, playground and pavilion/gazebo facility. The basin has been designed by the Flood Control District to be environmentally friendly and to promote habitat for wildlife. The eco-system continues to develop and supports a sizeable variety of birdlife. There are also hike and bike trails planned that will connect several parks in the area. Total cost of the entire project is about $450 million. Much of the funds will be reimbursed by the Federal Government.

When the stormwater detention

The Brays Bayou extends from well west of Harris County and feeds the Buffalo Bayou, which in turn becomes part of the Houston Ship Channel. Originally called the Brays Bayou Flood Damage Project, it is today known as Project Brays. The project is the largest project ever managed by HCFCD. Overall there are more than 70 individual projects along the 31 miles of the Brays Bayou. Most of these are aimed at reducing flood risks, but several are local initiatives to enhance environmental and recreational elements along the Bayou. The final phase of this monumental project is the excavation of the 340 acre site bordered by Highway 6 on the west, The

TEXAS HOUSE BILL 378 CHANGE Tow trucks have now been added to the slow down or move over laws, which require drivers to slow down 20 miles per hour below the speed limit, or to vacate the lane closest to the stopped emergency vehicle that has emergency lights activated if the road has multiple lanes traveling in the same direction. This law has been in place for several years applied to police vehicles. The law is designed to protect officers on the side of the road in the completion of their duties. Extending it to tow trucks will further protect the drivers while assist motorists. Please obey this law and remember to slow down or move over. The law goes into effect on September 1, 2013.

So what does this all mean to us after the last load of dirt has been hauled? First of all, and by far most important, we should be able to avoid the tragedy that came with Tropical Storm Allison. Those of us that are old enough to remember will recall tank trucks floating down I-10 and the garages of the Houston Medical Center flooding. There were 11 lives lost and the storm cost us in excess of $200 million. A side benefit will be additional

Page 8

park and recreational facilities as well ad new hike and bike trails. Finally, the greenspaces will attract wildlife. There has been much criticism in recent years of land lost to development west of Houston as the area known as the Katy Prairie. Hopefully, this project will replace some of the lands lost and the birds and animals will have a new home. For more information on this project and to track the development, you can view the project at: http://www.projectbrays.org

LARRY RAYES LEAVES LASTING MEMORIES By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View On July 30 former HISD coach and administrator Larry Rayes passed away after battling a heart condition. Rayes, who spent more than 40 years with the district, will be remembered for his straight forwardness. My mind goes back to the first time we met Coach Rayes when he was coaching baseball at BTW high school. The math teacher was one of many coaches at TSU when a budget short fall forced them to let go all their assistant football coaches. But Rayes landed on his feet as did many of the others. Fact is it was while at TSU Rayes met the lovely and charming Billye

Batiste a professor at TSU and the later married. She remained by his side for the remainder of his life. It all started for Rayes on September 2, 1947 in Chickasha, Oklahoma. After graduating from high school Rayes went on to attend Cameron State Agriculture College on a baseball scholarship he then played football at Langston University. Upon graduating Rayes took a job at Florida State University where he was the lead recruiter. Shortly after that he met Wendell Moseley and when Moseley took over at TSU he brought Rayes with him. In addition to finding his wife at TSU Rayes also received his Masters Degree while at TSU.

WE LOVE HOUSTON - by John Engel You cannot miss it! Driving on I-10 just east of the Shepherd, look to the right and it is there. The 28 foot tall WE LOVE HOUSTON sign which is another gift to the city be artist David Adickes. Adickes is the creator of the American Statesman statues also on I10 and the statute of Sam Houston in I-45 in Huntsville. Instead of the word love, Adickes uses a heart, inspired by the “I love NY” motto that was hugely popular years ago. The location was supposed to host the Beatles sculptures but it was felt that they were too large for the location. The Houston sculpture is compared to the Hollywood sign on Mount Lee in Los Angeles. Although much smaller, the impact of this multi colored statute cannot be ignored. There is not a real good place to stop and get a photo in front of the sculpture but you can park on the side street next to the statute and CAREFULLY cross the feeder to get a full shot. Without a parking lot, this icon will never reach the popularity of the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign, but I have already fallen in love with the charm and whimsy it portrays. Now, where can I get a t-shirt with this image on it?

After a few years at BTW Rayes moved over to Ross Sterling and he later became the Raiders head football coach taking his team three weeks into the playoffs. That was the last time the Raiders reached that far and the first time since the later Tom Hendricks was their coach and Rayes was on that staff. Rayes went on to become the HISD Boys Athletic director a position he held until his retirement in 2009. By then he and his wife were known ad Papa Larry and Mama Billye. The couple moved to Carrollton, Texas to take a more active role in the lives of their grand children. It was also a good opportunity for Rayes to be closer to his Aunt (Beatrice Thomas) who turned 93 this year. Fact is Billye and Larry threw her a big birthday party in Corpus Christi, Texas where sister Thomas makes her home. Perhaps the most important thing Rayes left for a desire to live life and make the most of it. Before his heart gave away Rayes became the first North Texas patient to enroll in a study of year long sem-cell research at Medical City Dallas Hospital. Rayes told family and friends he was thankful to have been part of an effort to help researchers make progress in the treatment of congestive heart failure.

ADRIANA BERKHALTER-LANCASTER-TSU Coaches Association 2013 Academic All-State team.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK Irving, Texas-While covering the PVILCA 34th Annual Banquet we ran into a familiar face in Adriana Berkhalter. An outstanding member of the Lady Tigers Lancaster High School track and field team. Berkhalter is 2013 graduate of the school and has signed to attend Texas Southern University this fall. Her goals are to major in Pharmacy while at TSU and help the Lady flying Tigers win SWAC titles in her spare time. With a remarkable time of 24.59 in the 200 meters Berkhalter set new standards during her four year career at the title winning school. She won three district titles and three regional titles and was a member on three state championship relay teams and also won two

state team titles. The caption of the Lady Tigers squad was selected as the MVP and the Most dedicated Runner for the 2013 school year. In additions to that Berkhalter was voted by her peers as Miss Football and Miss Track. She is the charming and talented daughter of Lisa and Michael Sharp, who made it clear that her excllence in the classroom was a requirement in order for her to run track. They are members of the Concord Baptist Church in Dallas. In the classroom Berkhalter chose Math and Language Arts as her favorite subjects and was ranked fourth in her graduating class. She was also named to the Texas Girls

Among her honors she won the Student/Athlete of the Year from the PVILCA. She describes herself as hardworking, disciplined, intelligent, and athletic. Not resting on her laurels Berkhalter spends time working with many community project among them the Angel Tree Foundation. One good thing about all this is Berkhalter will be coming to Houston and we will be seeing her run with the TSU Lady Flying Tigers track and field team of coach Pauline Banks.

WHAT IS TRUTH? “FOR ALL THAT IS IN THE WORLD” Dear reader as always it is again a blessing to be able to share with you some scriptural truths. Again, the purpose of these articles is to seek the TRUTH according to THE WORD, thereby exposing ERROR, for the purpose of saving our souls. Again we believe this is best done by definitions and the preponderance of scriptures; which is having superior weight, force, importance, or influence of scripture. We believe this allows SCRIPTURE to INTERPRET SCRIPTURE, thereby allowing a better understanding on that topic.

Truly, there are many in the religious world today proclaiming to belong to Christ, “Christians”: Loving this world and enjoying the things that are in it. We cannot have it our way, if we belong to Christ “Christians”. We must do it His way because, we are not our own, we have been bought with a price. Christians must deny themselves, take up their cross DAILY, not the cross that everyone likes to hang on their walls, hold in their hands, hang around their necks, hang on their rear view mirrors, lay on their bibles: but the CROSS of SUFFERING to deny what we like and want DAILY, and follow Christ; “Luke 9:22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day. 23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, (1)let him deny (2)himself, and take up his (3)cross daily, and (4)follow me. 24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. 25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? 26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels.” Definitions:(1)let him deny-720 arneomai (ar-neh’-om-ahee); perhaps from 1 (as a negative particle) and the middle voice of 4483; to contradict, i.e. disavow, reject, abnegate, 2) to deny someone, to deny oneself a) to disregard one’s own interests b) to act entirely unlike himself 4) not to accept, to reject, to refuse something offered: KJV— deny, refuse. (2)himself-1438 heautou (including all other cases)-himself, herself, itself, themselves. (3)take up his cross DAILY-4716 stauros (stowros’); from the base of 2476; a stake or post (as set upright), i.e. (specifically) a pole or cross (as an instrument of capital punishment); figuratively, exposure to death, i.e. self-denial: KJV— cross. (4)and follow me-190 akoloutheo (ak-ol-oo-theh’-o); from 1 (as a particle of union) and keleuthos (a road); properly,

to be in the same way with, i.e. to accompany (specially, as a disciple), 1) to follow one who precedes, join him as his attendant, accompany him 2) to join one as a disciple, become or be his disciple: to side with his party: KJV— follow, reach.

The blueprint of The One Body, The One Church that Christ is building and is the head of, is found in The Apostles’ Doctrine, which is in New Testament Scriptures (Matt. 16:13-19; Acts2:41-47; Eph.4:1-6; 5:2233; Col.1:12-20; 1Pet.2:6-11). This is the Church of and by Christ (Rom.16:16-18; Eph.3:17-21). Last month we shared with you a commandment of the Apostle John, as he was guided by The Holy Spirit, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world” (I John 2:15). This month we will attempt scripturally as always, to examine as to why The Holy Spirit inspired the apostle John to give this commandment. Now, let us read in the words of the Apostles, of The Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ (John 17:16-23), as it answers the question why, and defines those that belong to HIM. He that hath an ear let him hear, and then strive to do, if we are to be “They that are Christ’s“. Dear reader, again think about it, if we do those things that are not of the Father, then WHAT and WHO are we OF? “FOR ALL THAT IS I THE WORLD” I Jn 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For (1)all that is in the (2)world, the (3)lust of the (4)flesh, and the lust of the (5)eyes, and the (6)pride of (7)life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.(KJV) Definitions:(1)For All-3956 pas (pas); including all the forms of declension; apparently a primary word; all, any, every, the whole: KJV— all (manner of, means), alway (-s), any (one), X daily, + ever, every (one, way), as many as, + no (-thing), X thoroughly, whatsoever, whole, whosoever. (2)that is in the World -2889 kosmos; 1) an apt and harmonious arrangement or constitution, order, government 2) ornament, decoration, adornment, that is, the arrangement of the stars, `the heavenly hosts’, as the ornament of the heavens, the world, the universe, the earth, the inhabitants of the earth, men, the human race, the ungodly multitude; the whole mass of men alienated from God, and therefore hostile to the cause of Christ, world affairs, the aggregate of things earthly, the whole circle of earthly goods, endow-

ments riches, advantages, pleasures, etc., which although hollow and frail and fleeting, stir desire, seduce from God and are obstacles to the cause of Christ. (3)the Lust-1939 epithumia; desire, craving, longing, desire for what is forbidden, lust. (4)of the Flesh-4561 sarx (sarx); probably from the base of 4563; flesh (as stripped of the skin), or (by extension) the body (as opposed to the soul [or spirit], or as the symbol of what is external, or as the means of kindred), or (by implication) human nature (with its frailties [physically or morally] and passions), or (specifically) a human being (as such): the body of a man, the flesh, denotes mere human nature, the earthly nature of man apart from divine influence, and therefore prone to sin and opposed to God; KJV— carnal (-ly, + -ly minded), flesh ([-ly]). (5)lust of the Eye-3788 ophthalmos (of-thal-mos’); from 3700; the eye (literally or figuratively); by implication, vision; figuratively, envy (from the jealous side-glance): KJV— eye, sight, the eye, metaphorically, the eyes of the mind, the faculty of knowing, 3700 optanomai (optan’-om-ahee);KJV— appear, look, see, shewself. (6)and thePride of -212 alazoneia-1) empty, braggart talk 2) an insolent and empty assurance, which trusts in its own power and resources and shamefully despises and violates divine laws and human rights 3) an impious and empty presumption which trusts in the stability of earthy things. (7)Life is NOT of the Father 979 bios (bee’-os); a primary word; life, i.e. (literally) the present state of existence; by implication, the means of livelihood: KJV— good, life, living, life extensively, the period or course of life, that by which life is sustained, resources, wealth, goods I Jn 2:16 ... the lust of the flesh, (KJV) Rom 1:25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. 26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: 27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. 28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; 29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, 30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters,

inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: 32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.(KJV)

Rom 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of (1)righteousness.(KJV) Definition (1) because of righteousness 1343 dikaiosune-1) in a broad sense: state of him who is as he ought to be, righteousness, the condition acceptable to God a) the doctrine concerning the way in which man may attain a state approved of God b) integrity, virtue, purity of life, rightness, correctness of thinking feeling, and acting. 1342 dikaios-righteous, observing divine laws

disobedience: 3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.(KJV) Titus 2:12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; 13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; 14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. 15 These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee. Titus 3:1 Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work, 2 To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men. 3 For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.(KJV)

Rom 13:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.(KJV)

1 Pet 1:13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: 15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.(KJV)

1 Cor 10:5 But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. 6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. 7 Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.(KJV)

1 Pet 2:11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; 12 Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.(KJV)

Gal 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.(KJV)

1 Pet 4:1 Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; 2 That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. 3 For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: 4 Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you: 5 Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.(KJV).

Gal 5:24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.(KJV) Eph 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; 2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of

WHAT IS TRUTH? “FOR ALL THAT IS IN THE WORLD” 2 Pet 2:9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished: 10 But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.

2 Pet 2:17 These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever. 18 For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error. Jude 1:15 To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him. 16 These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men’s persons in admiration because of advantage. 17 But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; 18 How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts.(KJV) I Jn 2:16 ... and the lust of the eyes, (KJV) Ps 119:35 Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight. 36 Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness. 37 Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way. 38 Stablish thy word unto thy servant, who is devoted to thy fear. (KJV) Eccl 5:9 Moreover the profit of the earth is for all: the king himself is served by the field. 10 He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity. 11 When goods increase, they are increased that eat them: and what good is there to the owners thereof, saving the beholding of them with their eyes? 12 The sleep of a labouring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much: but the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep. 13 There is a sore evil which I have seen under the sun, namely, riches kept for the owners thereof to their hurt. (KJV) Matt 5:27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: 28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. 29 And if thy right

eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. 30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

Matt 6:19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. 22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. 23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! 24 o man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.(KJV) Mark 7:15 There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man. 16 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. 17 And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable. 18 And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him; 19 Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats? 20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. 21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: 23 All these (1)evil things come from within, and (2)defile the man.(KJV) Definitions: (1)All these evil things come from within 4190 poneros (pon-ay-ros’); from a derivative of 4192; hurtful, i.e. evil (properly, in effect or influence, i.e. derelict, vicious, facinorous; neuter (singular) mischief, malice, or (plural) guilt; masculine (singular) the devil, or (plural) sinners: KJV— bad, evil, grievous, harm, lewd, malicious, wicked (-ness). (2)defile the man-2840 koinoo (koy-no’-o);from 2839; to make (or consider) profane (ceremonially): KJV— call common, defile, pollute, unclean.

Luke 4:1 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered. 3 And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. 4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. 5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. 7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. 8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. (see also 2Cor.4:1-7; Rev.12:913; Rev.13:2-9) (KJV) 2 Cor 4:18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.(KJV) 2 Cor 10:7 Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ’s, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ’s, even so are we Christ’s.(KJV) I Jn 2:16 ... and the pride of life, (KJV) Ps 73:6 Therefore pride (1)compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment.(KJV) Definition: (1) Compasseth6059 `anaq (aw-nak’); a primitive root; properly, to choke; used only as denominative from 6060, to collar, i.e. adorn with a necklace; figuratively, to fit out with supplies: KJV— compass about as a chain, furnish, liberally. Eccl 2:17 Therefore I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun is grievous unto me: for all is vanity and vexation of spirit.(KJV) Eccl 12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. 8 Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity.(KJV) Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. (KJV) Gen 3:19 In the sweat of thy

face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. 20 And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.(KJV) Matt 13:22 He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.(KJV)

Mark 7:21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: 23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.(KJV) Mark 10:17 And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? 18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. 19 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. 20 And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth. 21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. 22 And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions. 23 And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! 24 And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.(KJV) Luke 8:14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.(KJV) Rom 12:16 Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.(KJV) James 1:9 Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted: 10 But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the

flower of the grass he shall pass away. (see also Rev 18:10-20) I Jn 2:16 ... is not of the Father, (KJV)

John 8:21 Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come. 22 Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come. 23 And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.(KJV) 2 Cor 11:3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.(KJV) James 1:12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. 13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: 14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. 15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. (KJV) 2 Pet 2:13 And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots they are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you; 14 Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:(KJV) I Jn 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. Acts 14:22 Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. (KJV) Heb 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.(KJV)

from God, and therefore hostile to the cause of Christ 7) world affairs, the aggregate of things earthly the whole circle of earthly goods, endowments riches, advantages, pleasures, etc., which although hollow and frail and fleeting, stir desire, seduce from God and are obstacles to the cause of Christ.

We must remember, to become a Christian one must obey from the heart (mind) the New Testament form of doctrine, which is the gospel; (Rom.10:14-17, James 2:21-24; Mark16:16, Phil.1:2730, James 2:17-26; Luke13:3, Acts 2:38; Rom.10:9-10; Matt.3:13-17, 28:18-20, Acts22:15-16, Gal.3:27, Col.2:11-12, 1Pet.3:20-22.) After obeying this form, which includes putting on Christ in baptism (Gal.3:27), then one becomes his bride, thereby making one NOT of the world (John3:27-29; John 15:17-27; John17:1-26; 1Cor.5:1-13; 2Cor.11-1-3; Eph.5:23-33; 1John4:4-17). Then to become “friends” of the World, we then become ADULTERERS, according to scripture. James 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the (1)friendship of the (2)world is (3)enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a (4)friend of the world is the (5)enemy of God.(KJV) Definitions:(1)friendship of the world -5373 philia (fil-ee’-ah); from 5384; fondness: KJV— friendship. Dear readers remember as always, the purpose of these articles is to seek the TRUTH according to THE WORD, thereby exposing ERROR, for the purpose of saving our souls. We believe this is best done by definitions and the PREPONDERANCE OF SCRIPTURES; which is having superior weight, force, importance, or influence of SCRIPTURE. Again we believe this allows SCRIPTURE to INTERPRET SCRIPTURE, thereby allowing a better understanding on that topic. Again, thank you so much for your interest in the WORD of TRUTH; GRACE and SALVATION; John 17:17-21; Acts 20:29-32; James1:21-25. After all it is our MAP to HEAVEN and away from HELL! We believe that there are some that perceive, understand and even believe these truths; but because of different reasons, do

not choose to accept them. We believe that weakness maybe one reason. We also believe that such ones might ask these questions: “How can I tell my wife, husband, children, or friends?” “How can I tell my father, mother, or kindred, that these are truths?” The question should be: “How can a Christian, i.e. follower of Christ, not tell the truth to all (the truth being the WORD)?” (John17:16-17) Followers of Christ through his apostles MUST tell the TRUTH at all times, for no lie is of the truth, and there is no lie in Christ, James 3:14; 1John 1:510 and 2:21-29. Christians must be strong in the faith, not in a faith, and have been instructed to quit like men. “1 Cor 16:13 Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, (1)quit you like men, be strong.” Warning, for being timid, “fearful”; causes damnation. “Rev 21:8 But the (1)fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” Definitions: (1)quit you like men-407 andrizomai (an-drid’zom-ahee);middle voice from 435; to act manly, 2) to show oneself a man, be brave: KJV— quit like men. (1)fearful 1169 deilos-timid, fearful We believe that pride may be another reason for the refusal of the truth, in that we don’t like admitting that we have been wrong. Jesus said that pride, among other things is evil, and defileth the man, Mark 7:20-23; Mark 9:43-48. This is true because first of all Jesus said it. Secondly, when it hinders one from saving his own soul and the souls of others by not admitting the truth by the word, can anything be more evil? Remember, among other things the WORD is profitable for cor-

rection: 2 Tim 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. We must not be too proud to accept the WORD; after all it is what will judge us in the last day, John12:46-50. We must change our minds and then our ways if we want to be SAVED, “Repent” Mark 9:4348; Rom. 12: 1-2; 2Pet.3:8-18.

Then the scriptures tells us of the few that will find and accept the Word, and the many that will not accept it because of being blinded by the god of this world, “the Devil”; Matt.7:13-29 and 22:14; 2 Cor 4:1 Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not; 2 But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. 3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. 5 For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake. 6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. ATHLETES OF THE WEEK By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View DEVIN JEFFERSON YATES-PV Offensive lineman Devin Jefferson is the 2012 winner of the Fiesta Booker-Bryant Memorial Classic Scholarship. The Yates standout who only started playing football in the tenth grade has ground into a fine lineman. Finishing number 46 in a class of 200 this year at Yates, Devin is now enrolled in classes at Prairie View A & M University. The lineman is expected to play defensive end with the Panthers. At any rate after finishing as one of the top lineman in the Houston Texans linemen camp Jefferson feels if he get a chance he knows he will make the most of it. With a 3.1 Grade Point Average he was offered scholarships at the UH, Sam Houston and Lamar but choose P V and explained why. “I wanted to go to school where I could learn and enjoy myself at

the same time and PV campus is great and I know I’m going to like it there. Fellow teammate James Paul Bryant last year’s Fiesta BBMC scholarship winner is expected to see action at outside linebacker this fall. When asked about the BBMC and what it meant to go against BTW in the annual classic. “Yes sir I consider it a great rivalry and BTW came at us pretty good, man we wanted shut them out 13-0 but they field goal late in the game gave them 3 points. The handsome and talented son of Joy and Nevram Jefferson plans to major in Mechanical Engineering and he simply says it’s mainly because of good pay and he is good in math. When asked if he would do anything over again in life he says it would be his 9th grade school year. “Man I overweight and didn’t do very well in class, I’m grateful for one of our football coaches got me out for football”. The Youngman went on to say it changed his life and made him

get in gear and he hasn’t let up since. “The first game I had against Madison and they pushed me all over the field and I haven’t played that poorly since”. Motivated by his mother and grandfather the most, Devin said he feels good about his choice of PV and is excited to be learning to operate away from home and become the man he know he can be. On the subject of Barack Obama becoming the first African American President of the United States. “Yes sir it’s unprecedented but for the most part I haven’t seen much difference than the George Bush Years”. The Youngman went on to say Obama gave blacks hope more than anything. In closing Devin considers himself bashful at first but once he gets to know you he can talk with best of them. Up on the Hill he will let his pads do the talking on the grid iron! TRISTAN FRANCIS-BTWCONCORDIA-CHICAGO Booker T. Washington linebacker and defensive end Tristan Francis is this year’s winner of

the Fiesta BBMC Scholarship and he plans to attend Concordia University in Chicago Illinois. Finishing number 28 in his graduating class Francis is the mild mannered son of Mary and Eric Francis and is carrying a 3.4 G.P.A. to Chicago with him. He plans to study Computer Information System and has already went to state in B.P.A. and M.C.A. competition while at BTW school of engineering profession. Francis hobbies includes computer technology and it keeps him sharp for his classes. When asked if he would change anything if given a chance to be Principal at BTW high school. “Yes sir I would like to see more activities for the students and the teachers would be more active in working with the students. On Sundays you’ll find the Francis family over at Yale Street Baptist Church. Tristan says he learned a lot from the Sunday lessons and says he actually was in the choir and did some rapping for them. “It helps you become a better person and living the way God wants us to is what we should be doing anyway. On the subject of the Fiesta BBMC game with Yates Tristan smiled and said; “After starting as a sophomore it was great to beat Yates in my junior year, man that was great“. Having played little league ball at Harris County Texans, Tristan knows what it takes to be a winner. We then asked why Concordia University-Chicago and he answered by saying. “The football coaches at this program want to not only coach us in football but they want to make better men out of us and that’s why I chose Concordia University in Chicago. Moving right along we talked about the cold weather he will face in Chi-Town and if he was getting prepared for it. “Yes sir

Devin Jefferson a massive lineman joins PV football program after winning the Fiesta BBMC Scholarship Award - photo by Dr. Victor Keys I’ve got all my coats ready and packed because everybody keep telling me how cold it gets in Chicago but I’m ready for it”. Describing himself as laid back but smart and get along well with people Tristan says the Fiesta BBMC game was the highlight of his high school career and having won in his junior year 14-13 was just great. Crediting his parents for keeping him on the straight and narrow path of life, Tristan says the rest is up to him now and he is looking forward to the challenges he faces at Concordia UniversityChicago.
