SCION XB 5-DOOR As we close out the 2011 model year and prepare for the 2012 year which will be our 25th, we

want to give credit where it is due. The 2011 Scion XB 5-door vehicle is a good mixture of truck like car nearly perfect to college entry level students. First it’s power by a proven 2.4 Liter DOHC 16-valve VVT-I 4 cylinder engine that produces 158 horsepower. Cranking out 22 miles per gallon in the city and 28 miles per gallon on the highway, the Scion XB is perfect for those with a small budget. This engine is matted to a four-speed sequential automatic transmission and equipped with electronic power steering. Front and rear disc brakes and sport tuned inde-

pendent MacPherson strut front, torsion beam rear suspension for some nifty handling. Power rolls smoothly to the pavement on P 205/55R 16 all season tires with fancy looking wheel covers. For a vehicle with a price tag of just under $18,000, we found it to be pleasant to say the least. Feeling safe in a small vehicle is not a very common thing, but we must admit we felt pretty safe in

THE LEGENDARY WALTER DAY PASSES ON

By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Earnest and Maud Day saved their best for last because Walter Edgar Day was their youngest child. Born in Corsicana, Texas on March 18, 1926, Walter would grow up to become a legend and his works will live for generations to come. He attended G.W. Jackson High School in Corsicana and it was there he developed into one of the state’s finest athletes. Participating in football, baseball and track and field Day loved athletics. Once he graduated (1944) his served our country in the United States Army, returning in 1947. Taking advantage of a scholarship to Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Day continued his career in sports. In the spring of 1950 he graduated with a B S Degree and was hired as the head coach at Corsicana in the fall of the same year. The ever popular and energetic Day quickly got the team rolling wining three state titles in his nine years there. He later would move on to E.E.Worthing High School in Houston as a swim coach as well as assistant to the football

staff. But the job came open at historic I.M Terrell High School in Fort Worth and Day took the position. It took a while but the aggressive Day made them a winner as well. His efforts the first year in integration caught the state’s attention and Day moved on to become a national figure.

Keeping his love for sports intact, Day moved into other fields thanks to his Master’s Degree from Texas Southern University and his Administration Certification from University of TexasAustin, Day entered the administration profession. He served as Vice Principal and Principal of I.M. Terrell High School until it closed in 1973. But the show was just beginning for the legendary coach turned administrator. Day served as Assistant Director of Secondary Education and later as Pupil Personnel. Finally Day was named the Principal of O. D. Wyatt High School and he remained there until he retired in 1986. His first 15 years of retirement Day spent collecting data and

writing books about the success and triumphs of all Texas Black Schools prior to integration. He coined the phrase “Remembering the Past with Pride” collecting information dating back to 1920 setting a standard no one can match.

That brings me to the PVILCA and Day being one of the founders along with the late Marion T. “Japp” Jones the late Johnnie People and others. Serving as the Executive Director of the organization, Day made all his findings available and Reggie Brown put them

on disc and we presented them to then University Interscholastic League Athletic Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt. So when you are sitting at the Frank Erwin Center looking at your state championship basketball program seeing the accomplishments of the black schools right alongside the UIL schools, please thank God for Coach Day, because that is his work.

Remembering my first meeting with the legendary coach I recall him telling me to move forward with King-Size View. It was certainly an honor for such a legend to thank well our little works when he has done so much.

Day met the love of his life in the lovely and talented Annie Jewel Sanford (“Wheatley Graduate) while a freshman in college and the couple were together more than 60 years. When asked about it Day would simply smile and say “I must be doing something right”. On November 14, 2011 Coach Walter Day passed way and was buried a week later. But his memories and the work he had done will live for many years to come. I thank God for the opportunity to have met a man of Day’s caliber and will cherish his memories for the rest of my life!

THE HOUSTON LAUNCH PAD

Out and About with John Engel When taking on a difficult task, it helps to be passionate about the task and your goals. The one theme of my entire interview with Prentice Goods, founder of The Houston Launch Pad (THLP) was his passion for helping. Along with Jennie Johnson of Creative Funding Solutions, these two filled the room with drive and hope. We sat in his modest office near Reliant Stadium and Prentice showed what passion can accomplish. Goods grew up on Houston’s North Side and grew tired of watching good people’s lives destroyed by drugs and violence. He is a graduate of the University of Houston and majored in Computer Science. He resolved to do what he could to change the world. THLP is the creation of Prentice Goods. Founded in 1998 as a transitional living facility for homeless men, most of who are recovering from substance abuse problems. Over time Prentice saw that many of the people that entered his program were veterans. This led to a gradual shift which focused on the needs of displaced vets and their unique needs. Goods believes that these people fought for our country and in the process something broke inside some of them and

he wants to help repair the damage. He developed a relationship with key people at the Veteran’s Hospital and was put in touch with veterans that could benefit from the programs that THLP offers. Early programs involved building relationships with Rice University, The Houston Rockets, The Houston Astros, The Houston Texans and The University of Houston. This provided tickets to allow homeless vets attend sporting events and feel like part of mainstream society. The success of the program led the Texas Rehab Commission to contact them. THLP branched out to supportive employment and vocational adjustment training. Programs also include resume writing, mock interviews and actual placement. As things grew, Goods developed contacts with key players in veteran’s aid organizations and was able to write a grant with The Department of Labor. The grant was titled HVRP which stands for Homeless Veteran Reintegration Program. The HVRP is a national program that provides funs for organizations to assist homeless veterans find meaningful employment in the community.

THLP offers supportive services such as bus passes, gas vouchers, TWIC cards and licensing assistance. These simple services often make the difference in the ability of the veteran find employment or living on the street. The services currently provided at the facility include substance abuse counseling, coordinating twelve step programs, help with family dynamics and more basic issues such as appropriate clothing and an address to provide to prospective employers. The most valuable facet of the services offered by THLP are the training programs. Most recently, the Launch Pad recently began working with railroad contractors to train people to lay track. This six week program teaches all aspects of track repair and replacement. Currently, of the first eight graduates of the program, six are working and off the streets. That is a 75% success rate! Another employer using the programs offered by THLP is Aramark Services. The jobs were based in Louisiana and THLP was able to provide bus transportation, interim hotel stays and meals until the new employees could support themselves. They will be cooking for crews on offshore drill rigs. According to Prentice, The Launch Pad will not target day labor or temporary jobs. They want to locate jobs that will offer a living wage and provide a secure future for those that enter the program, commit to stay sober and work for their future; this can be difficult as some of the guys in the program have criminal backgrounds. THLP is looking for employers that are willing to give the veteran with a problem past a chance and believe that people deserve a second chance. One way to obtain this goal of securing jobs is to host in-house job fairs. During one event, a security company was able to interview ten candidates and hired seven. In the fourth month of the current grant year, THLP is at 50% of their placement goals and is anticipating far exceeding their goals for the year. Another aspect of the program is

to offer only the training needed. So many programs train the homeless in several areas with no clear purpose or end. THLP is attempting to focus training on the eventual job and tries to place its people sooner so they can become self supporting sooner. Many of the veterans in the program are recruited by outreach workers. They come from the VA hospital, various shelters and areas where homeless vets hang out. They will also accept referrals from friends and family.

THLP is currently managing two halfway houses and is in the process of securing a third. The goal is to offer a one stop shop for the needs of their residents. They hope to offer training, counseling, placement, transportation and other needs under one roof. In order to enter the program, a veteran has to have his letter of homelessness and a copy of their DD-214 (the government document that chronicles military history and discharge). Then an evaluation is made. Those without a criminal past are more quickly trained and placed, sometimes in a couple of days.

At the right side of Goods is Jennie Johnson of Creative Funding Solutions. Creative Funding is an organization devoted to grant writing and funding research. She has been able to work with Goods to secure the grants that have allowed THLP to grow and thrive. With a father and brother with prior military service, Johnson is the ideal person to lead the fundraising charge for this program.

One of Jeannie’s goals is to recognize the unique issues that prevent some vets from functioning in the mainstream of society and address those issues. Factors such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder are often unrecognized and undiagnosed. Many veterans have no idea what services are available and have little idea on where to look for answers. Often these people “check out” and need a push in the right direction to get them back into society. The model of THLP allows the program to take the needs of the employer and tailor the training to the job. This allows a fast turn around and puts people to work much faster. One question that frequently surfaces is what can an employer do? If you have jobs and need trained and qualified people, THLP is a good place to start. Employers receive many tax credits, training reimbursements and other benefits for using these programs. A case manager and employer advocate are always available to resolve transition issues and help these employees be the best they can be. The success rate of placed employees is often higher than employees hired through conventional means. AN OPINION: THE SURVIVAL OF BLACK COLLEGE BANDS AT RISK AFTER FAMU’S HAZING DEATH By Alexis Williams A King-Size View Anyone who is familiar with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) have experienced grief, disbelief and anger because of the suspected hazing death of drum major Robert Champion after the Florida A & M University (FAMU) Florida Classic football game on Nov. 19. While this senseless case is still under investigation by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, another recent arrest of three other band members of FAMU: Aaron Golson, 19, Sean Hobson, 22 and James Harris, 23 for battery and hazing of band member, Bria Hunter on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 only added insult to this already horrific crime. Reportedly, she was transported to a hospital on Nov. 7th and diagnosed with blood clots in her legs, deep bone bruising and a cracked femur. She fingered these band men as

the perpetrators. Black College bands in a nutshell are a mainstay within the Black community. They are akin to the Black Church, the cornerstone of the community. They have performed at topnotch events such as: N.F.L. Super Bowls to Presidential Inauguration activities. They have entertained us and made us proud for many, many years. They have taken us on musical journeys that last a lifetime. They offer a marching musical escape from our everyday hassles. They can take us way back with renditions of rhythm and blues. They can take us to church with that good old gospel. They can make us move our bodies with pop music. They can give us chills with beautiful patriotic songs. Or they can make us reflect on our heritage with soulful sounds. Whatever the genre of music, often times, we live vicariously through these bandsmen and bandswomen. And as for the

dance ability, none can compare. Simply said, “We got rhythm.” Yes, we definitely have a long lasting love affair with our Black College bands. Show-stopping, high-stepping and titillating, are but a few of the words that are used to describe our iconic Black College bands. With nicknames like: ‘Ocean of Soul’, ‘Marching 100’, ‘Marching Thunder’, ‘Human Jukebox’, and ‘Sonic Boom of the South’, hundreds of Black College bands have entertained millions and produced many successful professionals in all walks of life. So when something as antiquated and unnecessary as death by hazing occurs, we collectively shake our heads, gasp and say “OMG!”

Now that we are over the shock, we must collectively let the young college musicians know that no organization, no group, no club or band is worth the death of one collegiate, future professional. One can’t ever place a value on a life. We must mobilize! We have to meet and get organized. We have to spread the word, that this is unacceptable. Stop the violence, no more Black on Black crime. Get involved. This training has to begin as early as middle school and continue on through college. This is more than our community being under attack from within. It’s sheer survival of the great entity known as the ‘Black College Band’.

WHAT IS TRUTH? HAPPY HOLIDAYS Please Get Your Bible and Follow This Study

A religious festivity:• feast • pageant • feast day For those of us that choose not to follow traditions and doctrines of men, this is not a happy time of the year, but rather a sad one. This causes pain and suffering when so many of our fleshly family members, and/or those that profess to be followers of Christ (Christians), choose to do so. As true followers of Christ we cannot, and will not; (Matt.10:32-39; 2Tim.3:12-17; 1Pet.4:1-7). This hurts our Fleshly feelings, and it goes against our Carnal wants, (our Bellies) (Rom.16:16-19; 2Cor.10:1-7; Gal.5:16-26; Phil.3:16-21; James4:1-10). Those striving to follow Christ (Christians) are commanded by Christ through his apostles, not to observe or give heed to fables, traditions, doctrines, and commandments of men; for these things are Idle> (free from labor, at leisure) (Matt.12:3537, 1Tim.1:4, 2Tim.4:3-4, Titus1: 13-14, Col.2:8-10 and verses 20-22). The commandments of God through Christ and his apostles, edifies the Spiritual Mind and strengthens the New Spiritual man in Christ Jesus, (Rom.12:1-2; 2Cor.5:14-17; Eph.4:20-24; Col.3:1-10). Christians must observe all things that Christ commanded his Apostles (Matt.28:20; John17: 20-21; Acts 1:1-4; 2Pet.3:1-3; 1John4:5-6; Jude 1:16-19). ‘Tis a season that is full of Vanity, decorations, eating in a gluttonous manner, drunkenness and fables; which are lies. Now let’s look at some lies that have been put in place by man, Santa (so-called), riding in a sleigh pulled by flying reindeer, and going down a chimney, of course we know this is a lie. “Santa Claus”, Father Christ/mas and or Kris Kringle, derived from Christ/Kindle, meaning, “Christ Child“ this is an abominable LIE. “This began in Germany, among Protestant denominations”. How many lies can one tell, or be a part of and be right with God? Especially lies involving and surrounding God’s Beloved Son: in whom He is Well pleased (Matt.17:18). Christians MUST speak and DO the TRUTH, if we are of Christ, through his apostles’ Word, John17:14-21). Can anyone prove by the inspired Word, that there were three wise men; if we cannot, how can we know it’s true, we cannot? Think about it, children are

taught that lying is wrong; except in some cases, one being, of ALL things, the unauthorized celebrations dealing with our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. This is shameful and DEADLY, to soul salvation. Why would a Christian teach damnation to anyone, especially to their CHILDREN? There are no examples and or commands for Christians to observe Christmas; thereby being unauthorized by Christ and or his apostles. This also sends the message to children that, participating in, or being involved with some lies is ok, especially the ones that MAN think he has involved Christ in, 1John1:1-6; instead of teaching the TRUTH; that all liars will have their part in HELL. “Rev 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all (1)liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” Definition: (1)all liars-5571 pseudes (psyoodace’); from 5574; untrue, i.e. erroneous, deceitful, wicked: KJV— false, liar. Children are being brought up in the nurture and admonition of fables/lies, traditions, doctrines, and commandments of men, rather than of The Lord (see Eph.6:1-4). Remember Christians are to exhort to godliness, (1Tim 4:616) please note verses 12&13). It is so sad that so many souls observe in any manner these traditions of men, instead of following the WORD, which is given to us by God through Christ, and his apostles. After all the Word is our MAP to HEAVEN and away from HELL!

Here is another ERRONIOUS statement, “JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON”; this is a cunningly devised fable, in other words, “believable error”. Jesus has never been and never will be the reason for any season, because JESUS IS NOT SEASONAL. Jesus Christ is a LIFESTYLE that one MUST strive as a Christian to live 247. Jesus has left instructions on what Christians MUST remember about him, and it is not his birth, but his death (1Cor.11:2334). He lived a life of suffering (Isaiah 53:1-12; Matt.21:1-7; Luke 9:57-62; John1:9-11; John12:25-26), then died most cruelly on the cross for us all. Remember, His Father for our sake was pleased to BRUISE His only begotten Son, Isa.53:10. Then, after His death, and the shedding of blood for the remission of sin: raised Him up on the third day, thereby giving us a chance for salvation, IF

we OBEY and follow HIM, through his apostles, (John 17:823; John 19:34; Acts 22:16; 1Cor.1:30; 6:11; Eph.5:26-27; Heb.5:5-9; Heb.9:13-28; James1:21-22; 1Pet.3:21-22; 1Pet.4:1-3; 1John1:6-10).

“KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS”, this is another cunningly devised fable, in that the word Christmas cannot be found in the inspired WORD, (the Bible). So then God, the ONE and ONLY HOLY FATHER, which IS IN HEAVEN, did not put his precious Son in it. Christ being the WORD (John1:1-14), never practiced it himself, and GOD made it clear in Matt. the17th chapter, that Christians MUST hear his beloved son, in whom He is well pleased and him ONLY (verse 8). In Matt. 28:18-20 when Jesus Christ was about to ascend back into heaven, he made it clear to his apostles, that all power in heaven and earth had been given unto him, from his Father which is in heaven. Christ then began to leave them instructions on what they MUST do and teach true Christians to observe. In these instructions “Christmas”, and the practice of it, cannot be found. Now, we believe this should open the door for some legitimate questions, for those who want to know the TRUTH, and escape error. For we all MUST strive to escape error, in order to have eternal LIFE. Who made “JESUS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON”? Who put “CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS”? It has been proven by the Apostles’ Doctrine that God the father did not; neither did Jesus Christ and his Apostles. Who else did Christ leave this authority; NO ONE ELSE. According to scriptures Jesus left his Apostles the Word (John17:510), so that when we read (Eph.3:1-7), study (2Tim.2:15) and strive to obey (2Thes.1:7-9; James 1:21-25; 2:17-26; 1Pet.4:12-19) the commands of the apostles (Acts1:1-4; Acts2:41-42; 2Pet.3:1-2; 1John 4:5-6; Jude 1:16-19), this and only this makes us all ONE, right (righteous) with God. Now let us examine the origin of this tradition. Christmas: Date (Dec. 25), was established in (A.D. 336), by the Western Church, based at Rome. The Eastern Orthodox and the Eastern Rite churches within the Roman Catholic Church chose (January 6). There seems to have been some confusion on the date of which this day was to be observed. God is not the author of confusion (see1Cor.14:33), this only hap-

pens with man’s traditions. This is why Christians MUST observe all things that Christ has commanded the Apostles, (see Matt.28:20). Again you will not find the word “Christmas”, or the traditional practice of it, by Christ nor his Apostles. So, there is no such custom in the Church of God (see 1Cor.11:16), which he purchased with his blood (see Acts20:28), which is the Church of and by Christ (see Matt. 16:16-18; Eph.3:21; 5:23-33; Col.1:18). As we can tell by the dates given, this tradition came MUCH TOO late to be of Christ or his apostles. According to Christ Himself, Christians MUST believe on Him through his Apostle’s word, (John17:20-21) and continue STEADFAST, in the apostle’s doctrine, as those before us (Acts2:41-42), this is SAFE.

The TREE is one of the main things GLORIFIED in this tradition, which man has WITHOUT AUTHORITY; thereby without success, tried to make Jesus the reason for. After all, this is where the so called “GIFTS” are laid, and so much time is spent in the DECORATING of it. The children of Israel were warned of a similar custom; “Jeremiah 10:1 Hear ye the word which the LORD speaketh unto you, O house of Israel: 2 Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. 3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. 4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers that it move not.” Now man has introduced the tradition of the “Christmas Tree”, that many Professing to be Christians, “followers of Christ”, observe. How can this be, when this tradition cannot be found in the apostles’ doctrine or in the inspired WORD of the bible, at all? Man himself proves the fact that Jesus is not the reason for the season, and that he is not in it. For when the, so-called, Christmas season starts, what is truly thought of the most? Is it Christ or is it the time off, the vain carnal trees and decorations, the materialistic gifts, the glutinous foods and drinks, the carnal games and the fleshly family gatherings? Where is Christ? Let your conversation be ONLY about Christ, the scriptures, and soul salvation while at these gatherings and see how popular you will be, (Philp.1:27; 1Tim.4:11 -16; 1Pet.1:13-19; 2Pet.3:8-12). Take the carnal,

fleshly wants of man out of the equation; there would be no observance of these carnal days that Christ has not authorized to those that are his. The proof is in the pudding; our GOD is truly our BELLIES Phil 3:16-20, because it seems nothing can be done without carnal food. Today, even buildings that should O LY be built for worship, which include the serving of SPIRITUAL food, for the spiritual edification of the body of Christ, must have KITCHENS.

Here Jesus made it clear what is truly needful; Luke 10:38 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word. 40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. 41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: 42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her. Please read what Jesus told the multitude; “John 6:26 Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled. 27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.” Now here is an example given by Jesus Christ, for those that were to be invited to a feast. Now this is not the so called GIFT giving as pre-mentioned, but TRUE GIFT giving, and Christians MUST be of the TRUTH, John17:16-17. Note the definition of GIFT (g¹ft) n. 1. It is of SPECIAL CONCERN, when those professing to be of the one body, the church of and by Christ (Matt.16:13-20; Eph.3:21), observe such traditions and doctrines in any manner. For there are those that says, “We don’t observe these days in a religious manner, but in a SECULAR one”; REALLY? Definition: SEC·U·LAR adj. 1. Worldly rather than spiritual; Earthly, earthy, materialistic, ultra mundane, Temporal, Terrestrial, Physical, Carnal, mortal, World. How can those of the one faith even think about “secular” DAYS, let alone be PARTAKERS of them, and then call Him Lord, Lord. “Luke 6:46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? See also Matt 7:21-24. These practices cause those of the one faith, to be idolaters; lukewarm, doubled minded enemies of the CROSS of CHRIST, minding SECULAR things. Followers of Christ must reprove those things that cannot be found in the Apostles’ doctrine, rather than participate in them (see Eph. 5: 6-17). There are many souls involved in many things that are not of the Body that Christ is the HEAD of (Col.1:18). The Church that Christ is the head of, MUST be subject unto Christ in everything; “Eph 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. 24 Therefore as the church is (1)subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.” Definition: (1)Subject unto Christ -5293 hupotasso; to subordinate; reflexively, to obey: KJV— be under obedience (obedient), put under, subdue unto, (be, make) subject (to, unto), be (put) in subjection), submit self unto. Christians MUST heed the warning of the apostle Peter, whom some erroneously calls the first “Pope”. This is error simply because, the word, Pope, can not be found anywhere in the inspired scriptures of the Holy Bible. However, GOD the Only Holy Father, Jesus the Only Christ (Matt.23:5-12), and his Apostles are found in the bible. Christians MUST remember that Peter, one of the apostles and one of the elders, warns the Church that Christ is the HEAD of, to beware of cunningly devised fables; but first note what the apostle Paul says, then the apostle Peter, as they were guided by The Holy Ghost; “Gal 2:6. This declaration that was made by the angels is heard often this time of the year. Peace on earth can ONLY exist if ALL men DENY themselves, and suffer to obey Christ through his apostles’ word, doctrine, traditions and commands; as God has commanded (Matt. 17:1-8; 28:18-20; John17:1524; Acts2:41-42; 2Thes.2:1417; 2Pet.3:1-2; 1John 4:5-6). Christ’s will have always been good toward men, but man must first have a change of MIND

(repentance). “2 Pet 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,” But man wants to have it his own way. He wants to be able to choose his own way to be righteous with God, thereby causing division, variance and confusion. According to Christ and His apostles; because of man’s SCRIPTURAL ignorance (Matt.22:29), REBELLIOUS ways (Luke 6:46-49); and because man loves his life, the WORLD and the THINGS that are IN it (John12:25-26; 1John 2:15-17), there is and there will be no peace on earth (Matt.10:32-38; Luke 12:5153).

Jesus said he didn’t come to send peace, but a sword, which is the WORD. If we are Christians we MUST believe what Christ says. Do we not want to know the truth? “Matt 10:32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. 33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven. 34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, *but a sword. 35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. 36 And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household. 37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me” (see also Luke9:57-62). “Heb 4: 11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. 12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any *two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (see also Eph.6:17).

“Luke 12:51 Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, ay; but rather division: 52 For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. 53 The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.”

Because of the insistence of many on following cunningly devised fables, rather than the more sure WORD of prophecy by the apostles, there is confusion. Since many are resolved to follow blindly, teachers that are false, without proving them by the apostles’ doctrine, there is variance. Because many have chosen to follow the traditions and commandments of men, rather than those of the apostles, which would make PEACE and make us ALL ONE in Christ, there is, and there MUST be DIVISION; Please Read: “II Th 3:4 And we have confidence in the Lord touching you, that ye both do and will do the things which we command you. 5 And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ. 6 Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye (1)withdraw yourselves from every brother that (2)walketh (3)disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.” Definitions: (1)withdraw yourselves from every brother-4724 stello (stel’-lo); probably strengthened from the base of 2476; properly, to set fast (“stall”), i.e. (figuratively) to repress (reflexively, abstain from associating with): KJV— avoid, withdrawself. ALIX-BELLAIRE LADY CARDINALS; KENNY HILL-SOUTHLAKE CARROLL By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View JORDEN GIDREY JV COBRAS La Marque, Texas-The talented Jorden Gidrey did his thing as the Junior Varsity Cobras rolled past the Bulldogs 18-16 to win the 2011 Super Bowl title. Showing a great deal of poise, Gidrey huddled the defense up and they came up with a plan to step the vaulted ground game of the Bulldogs. Gidrey, a hard nosed middle linebacker, took charge by knocking the Bulldogs big back off his feet with a rolling block. That went well with the play of defensive tackle Smiley LeBlanc, who took control of the line of scrimmage. It is always a pleasure talking with Jorden because he gives such straight forward answers. “I’ve got to obey my coaching and I don’t mind playing middle linebacker”. Jorden went on to say the Cobras had to make sure they took the legs away from those big guys and that stops them from running the ball so well”.

As we talked more with the leader of the team we learned they had a real good talk at halftime trialing 12-6. “Everyone knew we had to build up their momentum and get ready to play hard for the rest of the game”. Going back to when he first came out for the Cobras, Gidrey said he really didn’t know that

he would be winning Super Bowl titles. “Yes sir I’m honored to be a member of the Studewood Cobras”. With a serious smile on his face, Jorden says he is going to continue to work hard and maybe someday he will be like the Studewood Cobra who is one of nation’s top defensive back that being Craig (Snub) Loston of the LSU Tigers. A.J. ALIX-BELLAIRE LADY CARDINALS Houston, Texas-Junior sensation all-around guard A. J. Alix scored 24 points to help the Lady Cardinals win the 28th Annual Houston I.S.D. Girls Tournament. The win came over a solid Temple High School team. We spoke with Alix about her play and the team this year. “Last year we lost to Westside in the finals of this tournament and this year we wanted to come back and win it “. The team came back and won the district title despite the fact they don’t have a lot of height, but they still manage to win ballgames. Big Tiesha Taylor at 6 feet 4 pretty much had her way inside against the smaller Cardinals, but in the end Bellaire won it 58-51. “We just had to keep trying to box her out and that way when she went on our backs we got her in foul trouble”. Alix went on to say they felt pretty good about the way they were able to keep up with the big girl. “The key was to keep beating them up court and even though

we had three of our best players out with injuries our younger players really stepped up in this tournament”. As the Lady Cardinals continues to establish themselves as one of the top girls programs in the state, Alix is right in the thick of it. “Too many people talk about A. J. this and A. J. that but the truth is we have a well-rounded team and it’s not just about A. J., Look Raven (Burns) came out of nowhere and is averaging 28 points per game”. The talented junior went on to say she feels the Lady Cardinals should have gone to state in both her freshman and sophomore seasons and they want to make it this time around. “The past two years we just didn’t play as well as we should have down the stretch, but this year we plan to”. In closing Alix says her mother keeps her on the straight and narrow path and makes sure she spends her spare time very well. KENNY HILL-SOUTHLAKE CARROLL Arlington, Texas-Using his height to survey the field, junior signal caller Kenny Hill led Southlake Carroll to the Class 5A Division I state title. It came at the expense of Fort Bend Hightower 36-29 before a crowd of 42,822 at the magnificent Cowboys Stadium. The talented junior connected on 19 of 24 passes for 229 yards and two touchdowns and was not sacked all day long. Hill also rushed for 24 times gaining 116 more yards and scoring twice on the ground. Hill’s main target of the game was receiver Sabian Holmes who had 11 grabs for 138 yards including a big 59 yard scoring play in the third period. Holmes also had a great game on defense as well as he went both way all game long.

SPRING-DEKANEY ROLLS TO THE STATE TITLE By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Arlington, Texas-After a shaky start, the Spring Dekaney Wildcats clawed their way to a big 34-14 win over Cibolo Steele Knights. Before a crowd of just over 15 thousand fans, the Wildcats spotted the Knights seven points and exploded for 20 points in the second period to go to victory. Tommy Armstrong took advantage of a turnover and found Matthew Mayle from 19 yards out for the early lead. But the Wildcats responded early in the second period when D’Juan Hines hit Austin Garrett on a three play 50 yard scoring drive. On their second possession the Wildcats went ahead when Trey Williams crashed in from one yard out. Steele was driving and then Armstrong threw his first interception of the season when

Jarrett Irving picked the ball and returned it 61 yards to the Knights 12 yard line. Two plays later Trey Williams exploded around left end for the score from six yards out and a big 207 half time lead. Neither team could score in the third. But D’Juan Hines found Sam Horn from two yards out and a commanding 27-7 lead. However Armstrong got on target and hit Matt Mayle again from 22 yard out to close to with 27-14. Then it was all over when Williams who had a 53 yard punt return ran 24 yards and put an end to any doubts one could have about this team. Williams finished with 25 carries and 197 yards and three touchdowns including a big 7.9 yard per carry average. He also had help from D’Juan Hines who rushed for six times for 34 yards and passed two for five for

42 yards and two touchdowns. Sam Horn had seven carries for 34 yards and Gerald Estien added 21 yards on four carries for the Wildcats.

THIS WEEK IN HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Arlington, Texas- SOUTHLAKE CARROLL EDGES FORT BEND HIGHTOWER FOR CLASS 5A

Division I title 36-29 before a crowd of 42, 896 at the wonderful Cowboy Stadium. Junior quarterback Kenny Hill called a near perfect game for the Dragons as they won their 8th state championship. But they had to do so with one the state’s top performers in Bralon Addison of the Fort Bend Hightower Hurricanes. Addison ran 21 times for 184 yards and two touchdowns in the loss. The Texas A&M commitment also averaged 8.8 yards per carry and passed for 63 more yards and another touchdown on five of eight in the air. Clearly he did his part but the Hightower defense could not stop the well balanced Dragons on offense. We mention Hill who rushed 24 times for 116 yards along with two touchdowns and through the air he went 19 of 24 for 229 yards and two more touchdowns. It’s no wonder he was voted the Offensive MVP in the game.

Despite allowing Addison to get some big runs, the defense for the Dragons was led by linebacker Will Davis who was all over the ‘Canes in the second half. He had help from Sabian Homes who played well at wide receiver making 11 receptions for 138 yards and a score and defensive back where he also made some big plays.

Drew Brown opened the scoring with a 25 yard field goal but Hightower answered with a four yard touchdown run by Jaquinn Henderson. Carroll scored again when Matt Swoyer had a 97 yard conversion return of the failed P A T. The first period ended with S.L.C. leading 8-6. Things began to look up for Fort Bend as Addison got behind the defense with a 15 yard run and Luis Gallegos Perez booted a 34 yard field goal as Hightower was up 16-14 at the half. With a little time gone in the third period Addison found Ryan Nelson from 30 yards out and the ‘Canes added to their lead. However less than three minute later Kenny Hill hit Sabian Holmes from 59 yards out and closed the gap at 23-21. Still in the third, Hill struck again this time to hitting Corey Kemp from 25 yard out and a 28-23 advantage. After the kickoff out of the end zone, Addison went 80 yards for a score and the two point pass play failed but they still lead it 29-28 and the nearly 43 thousand fans were really on the edges of this plush seats at Cowboy Stadium. With a little more than nine minutes left in the game, Hill scored from six yards out and then ran in a two point conversion making the score 36-29. It was then Sabian Holmes and Will Davis took over and kept the ‘Canes out the end zone and won the game in a thriller. A quick recap of the state championships for 2011 S.L.C. over Fort Bend Hightower 36-29 in

the Class 5A Division I game. Spring-Dekaney whipped Cibolo Steele 34-14 in the Class 5A Division II game. On the Class 4A side it was Lake Travis over Hewitt Midway 22-7 for Division I while Aledo won over Manvel 49-28 for their third straight state title. In Class 3A it was Wimberley over Argyle 2114 while in the Class 2A Melissa won over Hempstead 28-15 in Division I and Refugio won a thriller over Cisco 36-35 for Division II. Class A Division I title went to Mason 62-40 winners over Stamford. The old favorite Tenaha whipped Munday 52-28 for the Class A Division II.

Then early in the second period Todd Christian returned an interception 70 yards for a score and a big 14-0 lead. The Mavericks tried to bounce back when Selwyn Green ran 13 yards for a score to close the gap. But following a turnover, Bishop struck again as he ran eight yards for another score and a 21-7 lead. Then just before the half Bishop hit Parker Bradham from 10 yards out taking a commanding 28-7 lead at the break which just turned out to be too much.

In the second half junior quarter-

back Shane McCarley got rolling and found Corey Seymour with a pair of scoring passes from 14 and 29 yards to close to within seven only to see Bishop run five yards for a score as the third period ended. McCarley would add a one yard run but Johnathan Gray who had 31 carries for 247 yards broke their backs with a big 37 yard run to put it out of reach. Bishop who was voted the Offensive MVP would hit Park Bradham again from 10 yards out and a big 49-28 victory. It marked the third straight title for the Bearcats and Gray goes into the record books with a career national record leading 205 touchdowns.

ALEDO WINS VS MANVEL It was a full day of action at the magnificent Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas as the University Interscholastic League hosted the final three games of the state football championships. The high noon kickoff with 43,369 watching the Mavericks of Manvel in only their fourth season on varsity faced the two-time defending state champs Aledo. With Manvel thinking of ways to stop

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View TREY WILLIAMS-DEKANEY Arlington, Texas-After a slow start trailing Cibolo Steele 7-0, the Wildcats got rolling. Once they did Texas A&M bound Trey Williams exploded for three touchdowns and 209 yards to lead his team to their first state football title in Spring I.S.D. history. In his spare time Williams setup another score with a 51 yard punt return and had a 60 yard run in addition to all his great efforts on the day. “I’m so excited I can’t explain my feeling now, but I love this team and Austin Garrett made some big plays when I was tired”. Williams went on to tell us he’s

not the only one of this team that can play. “We have a lot of confident players on this squad and I love my family, our coaches and all my teammates”. The sensational setback said he recalls people not believing in them and some didn’t have faith they could get it done. But in only their fourth season competing on varsity, they go 14-2 and win the class 5A Division II State championship before a smallish crowd of 15,092 fans at Cowboys Stadium. In closing Williams added he thanks the Lord, his coaches, family, friends and teammates and said they could not have won the state without pulling together.

La Marque, Texas-Having one of his better games of the year 5th grade straight A student Kharee McDaniel raced a little more than 25 yards for the game winning score. His touchdowns gave the Cobras an 18-12 overtime win over the North Side Bulldogs to win the Bayou City Youth Sport League 2011 title. McDaniel is noted for getting the tough yards for his team all year long. “I wanted to stop them and we could win the game”. This kid felt good about their defense and he knew they would hold the Bulldogs on the last few minutes. When asked how it felt to be a champion, McDaniel made it clear it felt great. “Even when we trailed 12-6, we believed the Cobras would come back and win the game”. Crediting his father with instilling confidence in him at an early age was the key to him and the rest of the Cobras hanging on to win the game. Looking ahead McDaniel says any high school that accepts him he will be willing to play for. He is one of the toughest players on the JV squad of Coach Kennon Blackshire. However he credited numbers 23 and 2 as a couple of tough guys to go against on the Bulldogs squad. He added when the Cobras show up in their Fiesta sponsored trailer some of the teams don’t like them but it doesn’t matter. “We don’t care how far we have to go to win the Super Bowl because we want to win at any cost”.

DEFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK - JARRETT IRVING-DELANEY; WILL DAVIS- SOUTHLAKE CARROLL; JAYLEN HILL-ALEDO By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View JARRETT IRVING-DELANEY Arlington, Texas-Senior defensive back and kick runner Jarrett Irving picked off two passes and returned them 72 yards in the title game for the Wildcats. It was good enough to lead the Spring-Dekaney Wildcats to the State Class 5A Division II title over defending state champ Cibolo Steele Knights 34-14. Jarrett, who has already pledged to attend the University of Houston in 2012, is solid at his position and has a good nose for the football. Clearly the interception and 61 yard return to Cibolo 12 yard line setting up Trey Williams sweeping left end score was the key to the win. It gave the Wildcats a 20-7 lead and basically broke the backs of the Knight who had won 28 straight games. “Coach Willie Amendola said it certainly played a role in the win. “We kind of got it going after the interception and went on from there”. The talented senior defensive back had another pick with one minute and ten seconds left to seal the win. “Our coaches told us they wanted two picks from me and I got them and it was lovely”. For his works he walked away with the Defensive MVP of the Class 5A Division II title game. The Houston

Arlington, Texas-Linebacker Will Davis was all over the field making eight total tackles and recording a share of a sack but more importantly required two blocks all day long. Thanks to his efforts, the Dragons won over Fort Bend Hightower in one of the most exciting high school football championship games ever. At the magnificent Cowboys Stadium before 42,822 screaming fans, Davis made a new name for himself with his outstanding play. It wasn’t just the front group doing a good job; they had help from Sabian Homes and Matt Swoyer took care of plenty business in the secondary. When you consider the fact the Dragons had to contend with the likes of Bralon Addison who went for more than 200 yards on the ground but they held Addison to only five of eight for 63 yards and one score in the air. That basically was the key to the win. This also marks the first time since we started covering UIL State Championships that we went 6 for 6 in the selecting of the MVP both three on offense and three on defense. Usually we see it differently from some

With Johnathan Gray going for 247 yards on 30 carries and scoring once and Matt Bishop hitting on 14 of 17 for 183 yards and three scores the Knight rolled. Hill simply made lift rough inside down low and it took its toll early as Aledo went up 28-7 at the half and never looked back. Breaking through the line and disrupting the blocking assignment all day long Hill teamed with Patrick Smith Ryan Dawsey and Todd Christian who returned an interception 70 yards for a score to make it along day for the Mavericks.

STUDEWOOD COBRAS HOLD THEIR 35TH ANNUAL BANQUET AT M.O. CAMPBELL CENTER By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View It’s been 35 years since the Studewood Cobras first put on their pads and that certainly is cause for a celebration. More than 500 men women and children gathered on the floor of the M.O. Campbell Center to honor their 2011 accomplishments. That included the 2011 Super Bowl winning Junior Varsity squad as well as the Varsity 1st place cheerleaders as well.

Thanks to JV team mom Crystal Gidrey, we were able to secure the building for the event. Gidrey teaches in the Aldine School district and has been doing a wonderful job of working with the Cobras organization. It’s really nothing I can say but well done once again and on behalf of our cooperate sponsor Fiesta we salute the Cobras. We think the photos will tell you the rest.

The lovely and talented pair are members of the First Place Cobras Varsity Cheerleaders under the direction of the legendary Nikki Penrice. Parents of the charming pair are Tamika and John Hillsman and they are in the fifth grade.

On Sundays you’ll find the Hillsman family down at Christ Way Missionary Baptist Church. Both girls are fully active members and love praising God. In the classroom both like Math as their favorite subject and spend most of their spare time in church and working on their championship Studewood Cobras routines. Even when it comes to describing themselves both girls consid-

On the subject of Barack Obama becoming the first African American President of the United States, both girls says it’s a very good thing and it goes to show you can reach your goals if you are willing to work hard.

When it comes to goals in life Sandavia wants to become a veterinarian because of her love for animals. But Semonyia wants to become a trail lawyer with plans of keeping innocent people out of jail. They had different opinion about their elementary school Durkee in the Houston I.S.D. Sandavia says if they made her principal, she would pretty much leave things the way they are because she feels the present administration is doing a fine job. But on the other hand Semonyia feels

COBRAS JV WINS 2011 SUPER BOWL TITLE IN O.T. By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View La Marque, Texas-Traveling all the way down to La Marque, Texas, the Junior Varsity Cobras fought from a 12-6 half time deficit to a big 18-12 overtime victory. They beat the North Side Bulldogs after Kharee McDaniel ran 27 yards for the score to seal the win. But there were plenty of good plays from Trenton Dickerson, Ashton Callaway and the hard running Tyler Brown and Jorden Gidrey. The line was working hard led by Shamir Hightower and defensive efforts of Smiley LeBlanc and others. With the cool air coming in off the Galveston Bay, the Cobras hung tough with the 14 returning

lettermen for Coach Kennon Blackshire and his staff. TONY LEVINE NAMED UH HEAD FOOTBALL COACH Levine was named one of the country’s Top 10 fastest-rising assistant coaches by CBS

Houston, Texas – University of Houston Director of Athletics Mack Rhoades announced that Tony Levine has been named the school’s 12th head football coach. Levine spent the previous four seasons as an assistant coach at UH, including the final two as the assistant head coach and special teams coordinator. He was named the Interim Head Coach on Dec. 10 before taking the reins permanently today. “I’m so pleased to be able to announce Tony Levine as our new head coach,” Director of Athletics Mack Rhoades said. “Before we began this process we talked about the characteristics we wanted in the leader of

our football program and Tony embodies each of those qualities. We spoke with former players, current student-athletes and interviewed some of the top football coaches in the country, and all of our talks led us right back to Tony.

CARDINALS WIN 28TH ANNUAL HISD GIRLS TOURNAMENT

By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View The Bellaire Lady Cardinals won the Houston I.S.D. Girls 28th Annual tournament with a 58-51 victory over Temple. They were led by senior guard Raven Burns who ripped the nets for 27 points and junior sensation A. J Alix who scored 24 points. The Lady Cards kept the pressure on Temple and the visitors simply could not keep up. Shandize Waugh played fairly well down low battling the

exceptional Tiesha Taylor who led Temple. But for Coach Tamarah Sanders it would tough trying to figure out a way to keep pace with the running Lady Cardinals.

Hanging in there with three of their top players who sat out the game due to injuries, Coach Michael Kramer and his girls got a chance to see just how good they could be. The sensational sophomore Lulu McKinney did not suit up nor did Bianca Winslow who was

nursing a knee injury while McKinney had a twisted ankle. Kinkaid beat Madison for third place in the tournament finals at Butler Field house. Comcast channel 129 broadcasted the game and reran it a couple of time as well. One thing came out of this is the Bellaire Lady Cardinals are certainly going to have something to say about who goes to state from Region III Class 5A.

DARRELL ASBERRY NAMED TSU HEAD FOOTBALL COACH Houston, TX – Darrell Asberry was named head coach of the Texas Southern Tigers football team today by athletics director Dr. Charles McClelland. Asberry was the head coach at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina for the past five seasons. “If you look at his background and his track record, he developed Shaw into one of the premier Division II football programs," said Dr. McClelland. "He has a very high graduation rate. We wanted somebody who was going to come in and be a great football coach and a great fit for Texas Southern University and I think Darrell can help us achieve our goals." As head coach, Asberry had a 40-25 overall record and a 3013 conference record at Shaw. He captured three CIAA Championships in five seasons (2007, 2008 & 2010).

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL REPORT: JACK YATES LIONS WINS HISD TOURNAMENT By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View The Jack Yates boys basketball team rolled to a big 99-72 victory over Wheatley to take the annual Houston I.S.D. tournament. Jumping off to a 7-0 start, the Lions never looked back as Greg Wise boys did their thing. Melvin Swift had several big dunks to the delight of the twothird filled Delmar Field house. “We feel Wheatley is a good team and they played very hard but we felt if we scored the ball, played defense and controlled the tempo we had a good chance to win the game”. Wheatley had a pretty good tournament run as well beating a good Village School team 89-85 in the semi-finals. In the third place game it was The Village School over Sterling 69-54. The consolation went to Aldine who beat Lamar 71-60. In other non-district games played before the holiday saw St.Thomas beating St.Thomas Episcopal 75-53, A & M Consolidated over Elkins 50-32, Klein Collins 64- Huntsville 49. Katy won over Spring Woods 48-35, Lamar Consolidated over Sweeny 88-51, Clements over Foster 53-38, Kingwood over Cinco Ranch 73-51, George Ranch over Wharton 61-47. Terry over Cleveland91-59, while Seven Lakes beat Kempner 61-41, St.Thomas beat Furr 62-56, PA Memorial ran past Deer Park 54-32 and College Park won over Bryan 90-57.

A King-Size View

The Way I See It By BIG John Chandler I was recently in attendance at the 2011 Outback Tournament, won by Fort Bend Travis over Fort Bend Bush. The score was in the fifties. I have watched several other games and the result have been about the same. Thank goodness for Yates and Wheatley in the just concluded Houston I.S.D. tournament with Yates scoring 99 points. I have come to a conclusion and knowing full well that I will be laughed at to even make this suggestion won’t stop me from

laying it out there in my column. This IS the way I see it-a shot clock in needed in high school basketball. It is so obvious a need that I can attest that it will never ever happen. Coaches will never agree to it and will fight like mad to stop it. Some fans feel the strategy will harm the sport of high school basketball. Some athletes will feel the game will change so drastically that only certain types of players will be able to play the game. I have a response to all those comments

SHOT CLOCK IS NEEDED AT HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL along with many more that some people will come up with: ‘get real’! The game on the high school level is becoming increasingly unwatchable. It just isn’t enjoyable to sit and watch ten players (boys or girls) hold a ball or pass it several times and not make any attempt to score. This is basketball strategy? Let’s be real here; those who champion the game argue that it has the most athletic athletes on the planet. Athletic athletes should be allowed to exhibit their physical talent. Maybe some think a first quarter score where eight points scored between two teams is exciting, but don’t count me as one of them. And please don’t count fans around the globe that enjoy the ‘great action’. The

game has changed. The athletes are in better physical condition. The coaches (not all) need to teach their athletes the game of basketball. Shooting, rebounding and defense to name a few. How about free throw shooting, especially late in the game (please dear readers, I can’t talk about how bad free shooting is-I’ll never finish the column). We want to see exciting basketball on every level from little leagues to the professional ranks. A shot clock is not going to make the game worse. But trust me is going to be worse if this holding the ball for five minutes a quarter is allowed to continue. I’m not a coach nor did I play basketball in high school. I’ve watched the game for many

years and seen how it has fallen over a period of time. A shot clock won’t improve bad shooting; poor defense or free throw shooting. It won’t help young players to think of passing first to other teammates and creating better offense. It won’t make players play defense with their feet instead of reaching out with their hands. Good coaching will teach all of this! Bad teams playing against a well-coached disciplined team will be beatenlike a drum. A shot clock in high school is like a national championship tournament in college football-wonderful to think about but not even close to reality. That’s just the way I see it!

Ms. Willis is the high school English teacher and the high school sponsor at ABCWest, a school in Harris County Department of Education Special Schools Division. Ms. Willis’s view of education is best described by the African proverb, “it takes a village to raise a child.” It also takes a village to educate our students. Ms. Willis knows the impor-

tance of an education and wants to see all of her students successfully complete the program at her school, as well as receive a high school diploma. She is tireless in motivating her students to do the right thing with their behaviors and academics. Ms. Willis says, “My students’ successes are also my successes.” Ms. Willis holds degrees from Delgado Community College and University of HoustonDowntown. She is pursuing the Master of Education in Teacher Leadership degree from Lamar University. Ms. Willis brings a diverse background to the class-

room – law enforcement, print marketing, life experiences, and a passion for reading. Her daughter, Sarah, is a high school chemistry teacher. Her daughter, Abbey, has followed her mom’s footsteps in the print industry. Also in Atlanta are Sarah’s husband, James, and their awesome daughter and first grandchild, Kenleigh. Ms. Willis volunteered extensively in New Orleans at the Lazarus House, Super Bowl XXXVI, and at the 2005 Junior Olympics swim venue. In Houston, Ms. Willis donates platelets through the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center. Ms. Willis stated that “blood donation of any type is important in all communities and requires a very small commitment of your time. Platelet donations take a little bit more time, but this type donation serves a critical need for patients with cancer”. If you ever receive a transfusion, you can thank a donor like Ms. Willis. Over the holidays, Ms. Willis informed me that she will welcome a new family member, Dexter. Dexter is a rescued Great Dane and will move from Florida to Houston. Ms. Willis has also helped to place two other Great Danes for a friend’s “big dog” rescue. As you can now see Ms. Willis is a very busy educator, volunteer, and lover of man’s best friend, that’s why she is the KI G-SIZE Mover and Shaker for the month of December.

LINEPERSON OF THE YEAR By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Normally this time of the year we have a profile called Lineman of the Week, but thanks to this very special line player we had to change the name of this column. Starting out as a three year old cheerleader for the Studewood Cobras JaKenya Young changed her mind when she turned four. The talented little girl was bored with cheering and asked her parents to allow her to play football. Her parents Kenya and James Young then went to the flag coach Traurean Powers and asked if they needed another player to play on the line. Just in case you are wondering, yes JaKenya not only played with the flag team that nearly went all the way to the Super Bowl, but she also was voted the team’s best lineman.

We are extremely proud of James and his wife because since we told them about the Studewood Cobras all their boys have gone through the Cobras program and all of their daughters have cheered; now it looks like one of their daughters is going to star on the field as well. During the Cobras 35th Annual Banquet we noticed JaKenya standing around the award table. She asked me why her trophy was not as tall and big as the others. The only thing I would think is flag team just didn’t get a tall award as Freshman, Junior Varsity and Varsity players. The four year old told me she might

QUARTET OF PANTHERS TO PLAY IN HBCU ALL-STAR BOWL Prairie View A&M football will be well-represented in the third annual HBCU All-Star Bowl as four seniors have received an opportunity to showcase their talents in front of professional scouts at The Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The HBCU Bowl teams are made up of 100 of the top eligible seniors amongst the Historically Black Colleges and Universities, in an East vs. West style format. The East team is made up of players from the MEAC and CIAA while the West team is made up of players from the SWAC and the SIAC. Throughout the week, the Prairie View A&M quartet of defensive end Adrian Hamilton, cornerback Moses Ellis, offensive linemen James Dekle and Tim Tusey had

He is retired Continental Airline employee Wilson Willis. The Wheatley graduate says he worked for the big airlines for 31 years before retiring 10 years ago. For those of you who are familiar with the Willis family, he and his late wife had triplets and they all have college degrees and are doing well in life. As we visited with Willis, he has a real concern for high school sports and always keeps up with his Wheatley Wildcats basketball team. One belonged to his late father and the other one is his. When asked how he found out about A King-size View Newspaper he had a big smile. “I always pick it up at the Fiesta store on San Jacinto and I find a lot of good reading in there”. He went to say since he is a Ford/Lincoln man he recognized the car right off the bat and made the call to collect his

THE COLLEGE SPORTS REPORT Jerry Woodley Now at 12-1, some might say it was a pretty good year. Others, unrealistic would say it was a bad year. Those are the pessimistic perceptions that can only find good in complaining. Why? Because that is who they are. So, I will cater to the optimistic point of view. Yes, the Cougars lost the C-USA football championship game to Southern Miss. 49-28. Yes, they looked sluggish. Yes, there are a lot of questions that couldn’t be answered. And just getting there was not good enough for all party’s involved. To reach the heights that team reached this season (BCS ranked #7 at time of conference championship game) is to be commended. UH got behind USM early (140) and still you didn’t feel like they were too far out of the game because they had been tested during the season. So you figured that as long as there was time on the clock the Cougars had a shot to win. Down (21-14) at the half you figure they would find their

rhythm and get going in the second half. Because to get in a shoot-out with the Cougars means you’ve got offensive weapons you can depend on, good offensive weapons. But a strange thing happened. The defense was going to have a say in who won this game. And that is what made it a different game. Which team could stop whom when time came to put the brakes on. Southern Miss. won because their defense was able to answer the call. A blocked punt (28-14),

The bigger issue was a BCS Bowl berth that was also at stake along with the conference championship. To qualify for a BCS Bowl would have spoken volumes about where the program was and is. It would have given UH a stronger hold on Houston area recruiting. And to not give Southern Miss. their shot at the brass ring was abysmal. I agree with USM Co Fedora, “…We

won, so we should be given that opportunity to go to a BCS bowl.” To know that a second non-AQ Conference could burst that bubble. It would make the next BCS Bowl contract agreement, a much more interesting negotiation amongst the school presidents that decide bowl affiliations. But, alas it will boil down to who will travel to these games more than ever, if the scuttle-buck that is being chatted about holds true. If you want someone to come and sit on a program, hire a coach older than 50 to be a coaching facilitator.
