Behind The Wheel With THE KING (Arthur Prayther)

CAMARO 2LT CONVERTIBLE With a product content of more than 75% of its parts from the United States and Canada, the new Camaro Convertible RS rolled off the Oshawa Ontario, Canada assembly line last spring. We are talking about a blast from the past with the new race car stripes; the new Camaro gets your attention right off the bat. Fact is those wide hips like rear over wheel curves makes the Camaro actually kind of sexy. Buyers who have for long years wanted the return of the muscle car yet with an economical twist should be pleased. For this new Camaro Convertible has a 3.6 Liter SIDI V 6 engine that produces 304 horse power and 227 pounds per feet of torque. Yet the vehicle gets 18

miles per gallon in the city and 29 miles per gallon on the highway. Now you know we put those numbers to the test and found it to be true. Furthermore the new Camaro has a five star roll over rating and that’s basically unheard of in a sport car with this much power. It would appear those wide curves on the rear along with a spoiler teamed with P245/45Z R 20 tires up front and P275/40ZR 20 on the rear goes a long ways in stabilizing the vehicle. We applaud Chevrolet Motor Division for taking the time and making the Camaro again and making it stronger yet still maintaining some good economical numbers as well.

Once you are inside the cockpit you think racecar first and then once you settled down you realized this vehicle has a luxury flare also. On Star with directions and connections package are available. The Audio system features Boston Acoustics Premium nine speaker system with 245 watts. You already know I was jamming me some Millie Jackson and Ernie Johnson. XM satellite radio service sold separately by Sirius XM 12 months, Bluetooth for phone and USB ports are also available.

2012 PRIUS V FIVE MODEL CONTINUING THE TREND By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View It’s been quite a while since we first drove a Prius and let me remind you that we told our readers this would be the vehicle of the future. Now with more than a million sold, Toyota Motor Sales are not just taking a bow but they are continuing to work on the world’s most trendy automobile. To start with the new Prius V is larger than its predecessor and yet it still gets 44 miles per gallon in the city and 40 miles per gallon on the highway. This made possible by the 1.8 Liter DOHC 16 valve VVTi-4-cylinder engine with Hybrid Synergy Drive System.

Clearly the most fuel efficient system known to mankind at this point in time. It is also one of the cleanest burning engines; talk about doubling your pleasure! Making it the choice of most governmental agencies, the Prius continues to set the standard for Green energy and fuel efficiency. But the most amazing thing about the new Prius V is its overall size qualifying for the midsize wagon class. We are talking about a vehicle that is good economically and still managers to carry a normal size family where ever they want to go. It simply doesn’t get any

better than this. The overall exterior received some changes and many of the people we showed the vehicle really didn’t know what it was. Fact is the new rear spoiler and high mounted stop lamps give it a more expensive look from the back. Up front the Prius has front fog lamps to give it a sports car look and sporty keyed powered folding outside mirrors adds to the flare of the Prius V.

nology. The driver and front passengers are treated to an advance airbag system including seat mounted side airbags wile side curtains and knee airbags with whiplash-injury lessening seats. If this doesn’t beat all in class what does? One you are inside the new Prius V a display audio with navigation and Entune 6.1 touch-screen with back-up camera. Couple that with AM/FM/CD with MP3 WMA

eight-speakers JBL sounds complete with USB ports, i-tunes, HD radio, text-to- speech along with customizable text response and much more. These and other option pushes the price to over $36,000, but let me tell you when you consider the going rate, that’s still pretty darn good. In closing please allow me to add reclining fold down seats and adjustable head rest along with plenty of cup holders just add to the luxury of this product.

Safety is also at top level with the Prius with such standard features as Star Safety System VSC, Trac, ABS, and electric brake force distribution, plus brake assist and smart stop tech-

A King-Size View free homes, John realized most existing handicapped housing did not take into consideration the types of disabilities incurred in combat therefore, adequate homes.

Out and About with John Engel HOMES FOR OUR TROOPS Homes for Our Troops is a national non-profit, non-partisan 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2004. They are strongly committed to helping those who have selflessly given to our country and have returned home with serious disabilities and injuries since September 11, 2001. They feel that it is their duty and honor to assist severely injured Servicemen and Servicewomen and their immediate families by raising donations of money, building materials and professional labor and to coordinate the process of building a home that provides maximum freedom of movement and the ability to live more independently. The homes provided by Homes for Our Troops are given at O COST to the Veterans we serve. (See note below) September 11, 2001 was a lifechanging experience for all Americans. The resulting military deployments of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and subsequently, Operation Enduring Freedom have profoundly changed the lives of many American service members.

After watching a news story on television about a soldier that lost both of his legs due to a roadside bomb in Iraq, John Gonsalves, a construction supervisor from Raynham, Massachusetts wondered what was being done to support our men and women who had sacrificed so much for our country. He set out on a mission to volunteer his time and expertise that he possessed in building homes that met the requirement of the Americans with Disabilities Act to an organization that provides such services for those most severely injured as a result of combat. Mr. Gonsalves was dismayed when he could not find an organization that was supporting such a mission. With an escalating urge to fulfill an unmet need, he knew needed to find a way to help these men and women that were returning from combat severely injured. Traveling to military hospitals to visit with injured and their families, speaking with Veterans’ organizations, and researching the difficulties facing America’s injured service members as they tried to find specially adapted and barrier-

In its first two years, Homes for Our Troops built/remodeled a handful of homes as it worked diligently to spread the word nationwide about its mission. Since then, the organization has grown into a highly rated, national non-profit organization that has donated more than 100 specially adapted homes to severely injured veterans in over 35 states. John has made a commitment to building 100 more through the organization’s 100 More…Homes for Our Troops campaign. The organization continually has approximately 30 homes in various stages of construction across the United States and all the services that this organization provides is at no cost to the recipient. Here in Texas, Homes for Our Troops is involved in several projects. Most recently HFOT worked to frame in a home for Lance Corporal Daniel Peterson. This project in Tomball will allow Daniel to live a barrier free life. Peterson’s home is HOTF number 106 on their quest to build their second 100 homes. Daniel’s home is a four bedroom two bath single story ranch with special accommodations to help Daniel cope with the challenges he faces. There will be a roll in shower and separate whirlpool in the master bath. The garage is wider than normal to accommodate the wheelchair and two vehicles. All elevation changes are gradual ramps so there is no chance of a fall. The bathroom will have dual height counters to allow access in a wheelchair or on prosthetics. The light switches are lowered and the outlets are raised to

make access easier. The home is 100% ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act) compliant and built to be extremely maintenance free. It will be Energy Star certified and will have a security system and sprinkler system. Wood and tile on the floors to make rolling from room to room easier. The floor plan used in this home is one of four standard plans used by HFOT. It has evolved over the yard to be more owner friendly and easier to build and maintain. HOTF tries to locate three lots for the recipient to choose from. Dan’s first choice fell through and this lot was located. It backs up to a small lake and will have a water view from the low windows in the bedroom. All labor for the framing and rough in is provided by donation from local contractor, Spaw Glass. Spaw generally does much larger projects such as hospitals and schools but was moved to assist with this project by Peterson’s plight. Watching this home go up from empty slab on Friday to roofed and sided house with windows and doors on Sunday afternoon was like watching a beautiful symphony performance unfold. Other sponsors included Volvo Rents (construction machinery) The Grill Instructors (two lunches for all volunteers and workers), Cisco’s Salsa Company (breakfast) and Rancho Grande Bar and Grill (breakfast). Music was provided for the occasion by Cool Freddie E.

proud to turn over the keys to this house to the Stein family on December 18, 2010! Another local project for HFOT is Naval Petty Officer Anthony Thompson of Houston who was on his second deployment to Iraq with the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines Fox Company 3rd Platoon near Fallujah, when a suicide bomber detonated an explosive under an overpass where Thompson and his Marines had taken up post on April 20, 2007. During recovery efforts Anthony was found unresponsive on a pile of concrete rubble. After being transported to three separate Battalion Aid Stations, Petty Officer Thompson was finally stabilized for transport to Landstuhl, Germany. As a result of the blast he suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury, an incomplete spinal cord injury and a punctured right lung. Homes for Our Troops completed this project for the Thompson family on January 22, 2011! Thompson’s wife, Ivonne was the keynote speaker at the wall raising ceremony for Danile. ote: An eligible Veteran or service member may receive a Veterans Administration Specially Adapted Housing Grant up to a maximum amount of $63,780. Homes for Our Troops’ assistance cover all costs over and above this grant to ensure that the home is provided at no cost to the recipient.

In addition, HFOT built a home for Army CPL Joshua Stein of Spring Branch who was left a double amputee with severe arm injuries after an IED explosion in Taji, Iraq, on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2006. The driver of a Bradley Fighting Vehicle on a patrol mission, an IED blast tore through the vehicle’s engine. Homes for Our Troops was

REVIEW: RED TAILS MOVIE IS A MUST SEE! By Alexis Williams A King-Size View Executive Producer George Lucas’ Red Tails, a 20th Century Fox film, from an historical standpoint, is an absolute must see! After Hollywood investors chose not to invest the needed marketing dollars into this ‘all Black action movie’, the producer/director of “Star Wars” fame used his personal monies along with Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry to see it through to fruition. This movie tells another side of WWII not known to many. He brilliantly delves into the outstanding heroic actions of U. S. Negro air force fighter pilots of World War II, “better known as the Tuskegee Airmen). From the opening scene of a fully engaged dog fight with German fighters, one knew these guys

were special and that the movie would be filled with Lucas-type quality action scenes. Based on the struggles and successes of the infamous Tuskegee Airmen, the movie shows, in several small vignettes, the blatant racism during this crucial war era. Even though, time allotment didn’t allow referencing the hardcore effects of racism going on in America and specifically in ‘the South,’ [Alabama & Mississippi], it is an exceptional glimpse into the myriad of phenomenal contributions to WWII made by African American military personnel. The 1944 setting is at a makeshift airforce base in Italy, during the height of World War II. America and allied countries were closing in on the Nazi strongholds. Under the command of Major Emmanuel Stance (Cuba Gooding, Jr.) and

Col. A. J. Bullard (Terrence Howard) the 332nd squadron,

while using old, “hand me down,” fighter jets from white squadrons, time and time again safely escorted bombers and equipment transporters, etc. from the German airstrikes. Amazingly, losing few lives and equipment. Col. Bullock returns state side to implore the upper brass not to shut down the Negro operation, but rather to embrace it and provide better equipment. The upper brass was in need of a way to minimize the loss of the big, more expensive American and allied bomber planes while on sorties. Miraculously, a not so easy compromise with a litany of staunch, verbal racial statements was made. The 332nd was sent new

of the Tuskegee airmen. As a badge of honor and morale, the tail sections of each plane was painted a bright red, along with the individual nicknames of each pilot. Thus, the group’s nickname and the movie moniker, “Red Tails.” After an incredible single pilot attack with the enemy, that took out many soldiers, planes, buildings, fuel storage tanks, etc. at a German airforce base, one ace German fighter pilot unbelievably exclaimed, “. . . he’s African!” Camaraderie was the underlying nucleus in this 125minute much-needed movie that highlights the significance of

telling an all inclusive history of WWII. Other central characters that were members of this nucleus include: Nate Parker, David Oyelowo Ne-Yo, and Elijah Kelley. The movie opened Jan. th 20 . This writer suggests getting your tail out to see “Red Tails.” It’s rated PG-13. WHAT IS TRUTH? THE SERIOUSNESS OF CHRISTIANITY TRUE Christians, those that are followers of God through Christ and his apostles (Matt.17:1-8; 28:16-20; John 16:3-13; 17:121; Acts 2:41-42; 2Pet.3:1-2; 1John 4:5-6; Jude 1:17-19), do not have any example of those before us having EARTHLY fun, joys, pleasures and parties (revellings) or any such things (John 12:25-26; Rom.13:12-14; Gal.5:19-26). But rather, have been warned against such. Contrary to what is being taught Christianity is a serious 24/7, lifestyle. There is nothing more serious than it, in that it is about either having eternal life in HEAVEN or eternal death and torment in HELL (Matt.25:41&46; 2Thes.1:8-12; Heb.10:25-31; 12:28-29; 2Pet.3:7-12). If Christ and those before us SUFFERED not to participate in such things, why do hristians today think we have the right not to suffer? True Christians today must SUFFER to be obedient and follow those before us, so that we can cease from SI (1 Pet 4:1-5). The following scriptures are some of the things TRUE Christians MUST focus on, to be right with God through Christ and his Apostles. John 12:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. 25 (1)He that loveth his life shall lose it; and (2)he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. 26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.(KJV) Definitions:(1)He that loveth his life shall lose it-5368 phileo (fil-eh’-o);from 5384; to be a friend to (fond of [an individual or an object]), i.e. have affection for (denoting personal attachment, as a matter of sentiment or feeling; a) to approve of b) to like c) to sanction d) to treat affectionately or kindly, to welcome, to befriend 2) to show signs of love; to kiss 3) to be fond of doing; to be accustomed to, used to doing (something): KJV— kiss, love. (2)he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal-3404 miseo (mis-eh’-o); from a primary misos (hatred); to detest (especially to persecute); by extension, to love less, 1) to hate: KJV— hate (-ful). Rom 13:11 And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. 12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. 13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not (1)in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. 14 But put

ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.(KJV) Gal 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, (1)revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another. (KJV) 1 Pet 4:1 Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; 2 That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. 3 For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, (1)revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: 4 Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you: 5 Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.(KJV) Definition: Revellings-2970 komos (ko’-mos); from 2749; a carousal (as if letting loose): KJV— revelling, rioting.1. WHAT IS TRUTH? THE SERIOUSNESS OF CHRISTIANITY James 2:17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. 18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. 19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. 20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? 22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? 23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. 24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. 25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way? 26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.(KJV)

partakers with them. 8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: 9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) 10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. 12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. 13 But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. 14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. 15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, 16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. Mark 7:18 And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him; 19 Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats? 20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. 21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride foolishness: 23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man. Eph 5:1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; 2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. 3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; 4 either filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. 5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. 7 Be not ye therefore

WHAT IS TRUTH? THE SERIOUSNESS OF CHRISTIANITY 43 It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power: 44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. 45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. 46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual. 47 The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven. 48 As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly. 49 And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly. 50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. (KJV) Gal 3:1 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? (KJV) Eph 5:17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. (KJV) Col 1:7 As ye also learned of Epaphras our dear fellowservant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ; 8 Who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit. 9 For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; 12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: According to the instructions given to Timothy by the apostle Paul we must conclude, to not be content with food and raiment (the necessary things to live a meek and lowly life) is to will, (seek) to be rich. (Please read: Acts 20:2935; Rom.12:16; James 2:1-7; 4:1-10; 5:1-5; 1John 2:15-17) 1 Tim 6:8 And having food and (1)raiment let us be therewith (2)content 9 But they that (3)will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is the root of all evil:

which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also (4)called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. This is the second death. 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. 1 Cor 7:29 ... the time is short: (KJV) Job 14:1 Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. 2 He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not. James 4:13 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: 14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. 15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. 16 But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.(KJV) 2 Pet 3:8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to usward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to (1)repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. 11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, 12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? 13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. 14Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless. 15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; (see also 1Pet.4:7) (KJV) Definition: (1) all should come to repentance 3341 metanoia (met-an’-oy-ah); from 3340; (subjectively) compunction (for guilt, including reformation), a change of mind (heart), as it appears to one who repents of a

articles is to share with you some scriptural truths; and to allow scripture to interpret scripture, thereby exposing error (which is false doctrine). We believe this is done, by finding through definitions and the preponderance of scripture, (which is having superior weight, force, importance, or influence of scripture), hat Is Truth? (John 17:14-17). After all, it is the WORD that instructs us unto eternal SALVATION and away from eternal DAMNATION, thereby JUDGING us in the Last Day. John 12:44 Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. 45 And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me. 46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. 47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. 48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. 49 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. 50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

DAQUAN JOYNER-TSU By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Wiping the glass clean for a team leading nine rebounds and rattling the rim for a team leading 15 points, DaQuan Joyner is getting it all together. The tal-

ented senior who came in from East Carolina at 240 pounds is getting into shape and using his renewed quickness to beat teams up court. That translates into easy baskets and Tiger victories. All game long in the Tigers 6955 win over Arkansas Pine

Bluff, the nimble 6 feet 7 inch beat the Lions up court as well as to offensive rebounds. This allowed him to make a key put back with five minutes to go to end the last run the Lions made. After that the Tigers exploded to close the game out. “Every day in practice we worked on getting up floor and it’s beginning to flow over into our games now”. As we talked more with Joyner we learned how he has worked to get into great shape. “After getting rid of a few pounds I feel I’m getting back into playing shape now and we are able to

beat teams up court”. As the big showdown with Mississippi Valley State awaits him Joyner said he feels TSU is ready and it should be a real good game. “Valley is a real good team and we feel we certainly play with them and it should be a real good game”. One of the most difficult things to do is get a big guy who can play with speed as well as power. We feel the Tigers coaching staff have a good one in Joyner and look for big things from him as the season unfolds.

MA’JANA PHOENIX A NINE-YEAR OLD SINGING SENSATION TO PERFORM AT FIESTA FESTIVAL By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View While attending the 35th annual Studewood Cobras football banquet we had the unexpected pleasure seeing and hearing Ma’Jana Phoenix sing. The 9 year old elementary student sang “I Love You Lord” with any music. In talking with her parents we learned she has been singing for a very long time. Starting out at Lyons Community Baptist Church Ma’Jana was humming when she was only three months old. It was then her parent realized she was going to be a singer. Years later she is a regular on Sundays at her church. Plus she loves English best in the classroom and spends a great deal of time reading. For extra activity she was on the Studewood Cobras cheerleading

group that placed third in the finals of their league competition. She was also voted the Queen in the banquet and looked well being escorted on the award stand. You know without me having to tell you we signed her up for the 17th Annual Fiesta Black History Celebration and Free Music 12.30-6.00PM Festival on February 18, 2012. Phoenix will be working double duty on this day because the Studewood Cobras cheerleaders will be performing on that day also. The TSU Cheerleaders will also be on the card. In closing we want it known we will have something for the young and old as well. Starting out with the legendary Earnest Smith and the Original Spiritual Travelers has more than 75 years of performing under his belt.

For more than four decades, the bedroom voice was really trying to get his girl back, charmed buyers to the tune of more than 25 million Copies. Born Tyrone Fettson on May 4, 1938 in Wilmot, Mississippi near Greenville, Mississippi but looking for a better way of life he moved to Saginaw, Michigan at the age of 14. Taking blue collar jobs for the next five years he spent sweating in a steel factory, Davis still wanted more. So in 1959 he got a job with legendary Blues Guitarist Freddie King and Davis went on the road with him for a year or so before hooking up with the Four Brothers Records for a couple years producing a single called “Suffer”. This song was recorded under the name Tyrone the ‘Wonder Boy’ and written and produced by Harold Burrage. Unfortunately Burrage passed way in 1966. But by that time

people had gotten a taste of Davis begging and women all over the country was falling for his pleas. It was then Davis teamed with Willie Henderson and the hits started to come with “Is it Something You’ve Got” and in 1970 “Can I change my Mind and the classic Turn back the Hands of Time” and Tyrone was on his way. For the next 15 years or so he turned out hit after hit including the smash it “Turning Point”. At Dakar Records Tyrone continued to roll all the way through 1976. By that time he was so established that Columbia picked him up in 1978 and a year later in 1979 “In the Mood” rocked the country again. Other hits songs and albums would follow but early in the ‘80s the hits slowed down and Davis went from label to label until he signed with Malaco Records in 1996 and the hits started all over again for Davis. Some of his later hits included “Home Wreckers”, “Moms Apple Pie” and many more but when I think of Tyrone I will always remember “I Wish it was Me” and the special

effects of the hit “I had it all the Time”. Songs like “In the Mood and I’ll Be Right Here” just reminds you of what Davis gave us for so many years. While working on his 38th album in October of 2004 Davis suffered s stroke and never recovered. Sadly on February 9, 2005 with his wife of 43 years Ann Davis at his side he passed away at age 66. My mind reflects back to hearing the news on KCOH AM 1430 and all those great songs just started coming into my mind. I can recall going over to Cool Roy’s Barber Shop in North Main and getting my afro cut and putting on my stacked platform shoes and going to see the great Tyrone Davis. Going all the way back to 1972 when we paid to see Tyrone Davis at the old Continental Showcase on Scott Street. Just thinking about those good old days makes my blood runs warm. Fact is with Tyrone Davis nephew (Jerroll Levert Jackson) in town and his mom (The great Millie Jackson), Ernie Johnson is going to present a musical tribute to Davis at Fiesta on South Main and South Post Oak. This is Fiesta 17th Annual Black History Celebration and Free Music Festival and it is FREE. The show starts at 12.30 with the tribute taking place about 4.30 PM on Saturday February 18, 2012. Be there and enjoy!

ERNIE JOHNSON TO PERFORM TRIBUTE TO TYRONE DAVIS By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Soul and Blues Legend and Tribute King Ernie Johnson will once again be the headliner at the Fiesta Black History Celebration and Free Music Festival. The 17th Annual event is presented by Fiesta in association with King Arthur’s Productions. The show takes place at Fiesta Store number 22 located at 12355 South Main at South Post Oak near the Power Center from 12.30 PM until 6.00 PM on Saturday February 18, 2012. Johnson who started out about the same time Tyrone Davis did loves doing Tyrone Davis songs. “King, Tyrone and I go way

back to 1969 when he released “Turn Back the Hands of Time” and many other hits followed. “For those of us who didn’t have records, we would love to do Tyrone Davis”. Johnson went to credit Junior Parker and Bobby Bland for his style. “In those days there were so many good artists who could really sing, so we just picked a guy and tried to imitate him. Fact is on one or more occasions, promoters actually booked Johnson as Tyrone Davis before he actually knew what was going on. Ernie later met Tyrone and they actually had shows together from time to time. Fact is if you look at the photos with this story you will see one with Ernie with his arms around Tyrone moments after a show.

Over the past eight months Johnson has been hired to do a series of radio spots for Fiesta and he loves every minute of it. “Yes King it’s wonderful working with you and Fiesta because it gave me an opportunity to display some of our music and I really do shop at Fiesta so what I’m saying in those spots is true”. We are working closely with David Washington of WPON in Detroit in an effort to get Johnson featured on TV One’s UnSung program. So if you want to turn back the hands of time, be on hand when Johnson and his 10 piece Hot and Steamy Band get started around 4.45 PM on Saturday February 18th at Fiesta on South Main. Don’t forget it’s all free, fun, rides and games for the kids and lots of free entertainment! Let me remind you that Millie Jackson will also be there for a Meet and Greet appearance as well.

FIESTA FREE FESTIVAL OFFERS OPPORTUNITY TO MEET AND GREET THE LEGENDARY MILLIE JACKSON By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View On February 18, 2012 at the 17th Annual Fiesta Black History Celebration and Free Music Festival the public will have an opportunity to meet and greet Millie Jackson. The rapping soul sister who talks plenty of smack will be on hand as Soul and Blues Legend Ernie Johnson pays tribute to the late great Tyrone Davis. Jackson has also signed a five city tour that comes to Houston on March 31, 2012. After many gold records and a Grammy nomination in 1974 (If loving you is wrong-I don’t want to be right) Jackson lives in Atlanta these days. For more than 15 years she did a radio show on KKDA Soul 73 in Dallas from her home. Her son Jerroll Levert Jackson who’s the nephew of Tyrone Davis will also be in town for the Festival along with Jackson’s road manager Arthur Jones. The good thing about this event is the fact it is FREE and open the public and with fun and games for the entire family. The Millie Jackson story begins with her birth in Thompson, Georgia in the mid-forties. Millie, raised by her grandparents, spent most of her time in the church. At age 15 she moved to New Jersey with her father and began working at a famous New York lunch counter and began singing at night. She continued to get noticed and ventured out only to return and get a clerical job while still singing at night. Then becoming a mom to a baby girl, but a short marriage left Jackson a single

parent. But it didn’t stop her from moving on with her life. A couple of years later while still holding on her clerical job, Jackson signed with Spring Records. This produced two hits off the bat (Ask me what you want and my man is a sweet man). Those two songs got Millie going and then in 1972 she released her first album self titled Millie Jackson. The hit (It Hurt so Good) and the movie score to Cleopatra Jones (played by the late Tamara Dotson) really got her going. Then in 1974 she remade the Luther Ingram hit (If loving you is wrong-I don’t want to be right) which won her a Grammy nomination for best female vocalist. It set the stage for Jackson to continue to blossom for nearly three decades. Keeping her business in tact, Jackson went to become one of the most successful artist of all times and handling her very own business. Despite the fact her music and lyric were sometimes not allowed on radio, Millie still sold music and managed her own career very well. The hit album “Feeling Bit’’’y“sold like hot cake despite the fact most radio stations would not play it. Most

observers believe it was Jackson biggest hit and clearly made her a house hold name. It also proved to people world-wide Jackson had her very own identity and needed not be compared to Roberta Flack, Aretha Franklin or Dianna Ross. Jackson even tried a couple of low profile albums but it wasn’t her, so she just kept right on rapping and talking about cheating because that’s what had made her famous and it was also what she wanted to do. By this time she had a son Jerroll Levert and Jackson kept right on rolling as she embarked on stage with the play “Youngman Older woman” Her daughter was in the play and

Jackson wrote and directed two Broadway plays showing just how versatile she is. Jackson is getting out on tour again with a stop in Chicago on February 4th and Houston on March 31st. You can rest assured when you listen to what’s been played on the radio these days the public will be glad to see and hear Millie talk the noise and sing about what’s really going on. If you been around as long as I have you learn to appreciate both sides of what Jackson has to offer. Because I still remember the first time I heard Wash Allen on KCOH AM 1430 playing “Ask me what you want)

and looking at Jackson first album cover you get that good church girls feeling about her. Then a few years down the road she was talking about putting another log on the fire and keep the home fire burning in her songs. That made it clear Millie understood the changes a person goes through in life and she talked about it in her music. So every time I hear one of those sexually explicit songs I still remember that sweet innocence sound of ‘Ask me what you want’. That’s what makes Millie Jackson so special because she can come at you so many ways. We are looking forward to bringing her to Houston and you too can meet this living legend on February 18, 2012 at the Fiesta Free Music Festival at 12355 South Main at South Post Oak from 12.30 until 6.00PM.

NEUTRAL SISTER KYRA NOONS-MORE THAN A PRETTY FACE By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Missouri City, Texas-While covering the first annual Lone Star Idol competition in Dallas last fall, we caught a performance by Kyra Noons-AKA Neutral Sister. We found her to be very talented and she was just a guest on the show but it was much more than what we saw there. After talking with her father (Tony Noons) we made the arrangements to go out and have a talk with her to gather some more information. The Bellaire High School graduate has come full circle since being born to an English Father and Jamaican Mother. Kyra,

born in Nairobi capital of Kenya, Africa spent most of her early years close to her mother while her father worked on Safari. This gave her an excellent opportunity to learn the culture of the Mother Country. By 1979 the family moved to London and spent seven years there before moving to Jamaica. Once again Kyra had the opportunity to sample a wide range of music. Listening to the likes of Marvin Gaye, Madonna, Pink Floyd, Donna Summers and many others, like her father’s involvement with the rock musical “Hair”.

In 1986 the family moved to Jamaica, she was listening to the likes of Dennis Brown, Bon Jovi, Shabba Ranks and other reggae artist. The dance hall played quite an influence and it shows through the mix of lyrical delivery and subject matter for her work. Having trained in the Choirs of England, Jamaica and America, Kyra developed outstanding vocal deliveries. In 1998 Kyra joined her sister Bianca and they formed the group Neutral Sisters. Quickly they began writing songs together and their song Live-N-Direct won first place on the Billboard

Songwriter’s competition in pop category. The Sisters toured for eight years while considered “Reggae Pop Fusion” a new wave. Many stages rocked as the two charming young women blended music from all cultures and backgrounds. They went on to become famous for opening for some of the world’s top acts. Before 20,000 fans they opened for Junior Gong/Damien Marley at the Rebel Salute in St. Elizabeth Jamaica. As they got on a roll the girls went on to open at the International Arts Festival in New Orleans, the Toyota Center and the Houston International Festival to name a few. Just as they were set to go on an East African tour Bianca, who had type-one diabetes went into a coma but held on for year before passing away. Kyra went on to write the song (Hold On) which was originally written to Bianca and later remixed for the “Hold On” Haiti relief efforts. The talented Kyra Noons opened up at the Houston International Festival as Neutral Sister and had dedicated her life’s work in honor of her sister. She currently has a CD with the assistance of the legendary Mr. Blacc Sheep and it’s great.

Family photo shows Kyra oons sitting on a masic lady lap back in her birthplace Kenya, Africa

Press release photos of eutral Sister as she plans to go on tour in Africa later this year

We spoke with Neutral Sister from their home in Missouri City. “I want to just reach out and move forward with the music I’m producing and not allow myself to be typecast into one brand of music”. With all the cultures her path has taken over the years, Kyra knows her place in life. “The Almighty has a place for me and I’m working to reach that place, just like working with you (King) is a positive thing and I’m still pushing to get to the next level”. As we talked more with Kyra she made it clear she’s excited about the Fiesta Festival and also working on her version of “At Last” a song she plans to do to honor the late Etta James. One thing we learned in talking with Kyra; she certainly has a real good feel for what she is dealing with and knows how to handle it. While working as a vocal coach, she is a mother and still loves writing and singing songs. “I’m tremendously blessed and Houston is a wonderful and very supportive city and if you look you might think my resume is a great one, but I’m still striving to get to the next level”. In closing please allow me to add Tony has sent a good example for his daughter and in due time things will really work out for her.

Chandler Lifetime Achievement award winner. He will be honored along with others at the 17th Annual Fiesta Black History Celebration and Free Music Festival February 18, 2012 12:30 until 4:00 PM. Born in 1926, Dr. Washington grew up and attended G. W. Jackson High School and attended classes with the late Walter Day. Both men joined the armed services and served their country well. Upon completing their tours of duty they went in separate ways. Day went on to win three state championships in football and helped founded and built to stay the PVILCA. In addition, he wrote books and did research to keep the history of black high school athletics prior to integration documented. While on the other hand, Dr. Washington wanted to learn more about the human body in a spiritual way and thus he joined the profession of Chiropractic Health Care. After going along as the only African American in the field throughout the southwest, Dr. Washington befriended Dr. Otis Thomas. The couple built a great friendship and it was Dr Thomas who pushed to allow Dr. Washington to become the first black to become a member in the Texas Chiropractic Association. Their business sense led to them contracting King Arthur’s Productions to produce a television series called “Setting the Record Straight”. The series of 12 one-hour long TV shows were co produced by Bellamy Sports Productions and aired for nearly five years on Access Houston. STUDENT OF THE WEEK MEINRAD ‘TONY’ WASHINGTON-TSU Here we go again into our 30th year of covering the MetroHouston area just like a blanket. That’s when it comes to the good it has to offer. It’s a pleasure to cover a young man we’ve known for many years. Most of us simply call him Little Tony because of his father Meinrad “Tony” Washington Senior who worked at Delmar Stadium for nearly 28 years. Long years ago we knew Tony when his niece Tanuya Washington was a big star girl basketball player at Waltrip. Funny how times flies when you are having fun.

Tony Washington TSU junior cheerleaders holding a 3.5 GPA and majoring in Education Photos by Dr. Victor Keys

This month’s profile is on Tony Washington a junior Education major at Texas Southern University. He is currently holding a 3.5 G.P.A. looking forward to finishing up school to begin his teaching career. “I feel with

education it’s important because you can help make the world a better place”. Crediting his parents Sylvia and Tony Washington Senior for keeping him on the straight and narrow path, Tony says he feels good about the road he has taken in life. “King, I wouldn’t change a thing if I could live my life over because I feel I have gotten the most out of live”. On Sundays you can find the Washington family over at Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church. “It is wonderful being raised up in the Catholic Church and the thing I enjoy the most is the younger members’ kind of look up to those of us who are in college”. Washington says he’s thankful being able to vote for Barack Obama and live to see him win the seat in the White House. “King I tell you I feel President Obama is doing a wonderful job and I will give him an A for his grade”. Washington went on to say he feels the President has kept his promises to the American people by bringing our troops home from Iraq and tracking down Bin Ladin. “Let

FRED STURDIVANT-TSU By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View As the Tigers moved to 5-1 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, junior forward Fred Sturdivant is getting better and better. Connecting on six of nine shots from the field and scoring a second leading with 12 points and adding six boards, I’d say Fred had a pretty good game. The 6 feet 7 185 pounder slammed one home late in the game to send a statement to University Arkansas Pine Bluff. “That not only goes to UAPB but to the rest of the SWAC as well. We kind of want them to know the Tigers are for real and we mean business”. Sturdivant credited the Lions at playing a pretty good game and said the Tigers made the key adjustments at the half. “We knew they would play a good zone and we knew they would shoot a lot of treys”. Fred went on to say the key was the Tigers guards did a great job of getting the ball up court and he and his wing teammates beat the Lions up court for easy basket. “Our coaches had told to push the ball up court and DaQuan and I could fill the lanes for easy baskets and it worked out”. Defensively the Tigers did a good job of

shutting the Lions down and not allowing them to do with they like to do best. “Our coaches kept telling us to stay at home on the wings in our lanes and point out and contain them on the three point line and we got it done”. In closing Fred said if the team follows the coaching staff instructions and work together as a team they can win the SWAC and beyond!

us not forget the President bailed out our auto industry as well saving thousands of people their jobs”. As we talked further with Tony we gathered his thoughts on the TSU Cheerleaders. “It’s like a family and really that’s where I spend most of my spare time”. He added new director Greg Malone who was with the group all along but takes over the top spot this year had kept them pumped up all year long. “It’s

Page 19

wonderful working with Greg and after winning a SWAC title in football two years ago we feel we have a real good chance to win on in basketball”. In closing Tony described himself as a very outgoing person who fun to be around and yet has a very serious side when it comes to education. “My parents made that clear to me a very long time ago. It has always been ‘no pass no play’ in the Washington home”.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

OMAR STRONG-TSU By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View

In 31 minutes of action Omar Strong a 5 feet 9 inch junior guard from Baltimore Maryland scored but six points. But it was his defense on Savalace Townsend that made him a key to the Tigers 69-55 win. The guard smothered Townsend allowing him only two attempts in the last five minutes of the game. The result was three for 13 and 12 total points for the Southwestern Athletic Conference second leading scorer. “Defense is what I like playing and every time we face a team with a great scorer I want to guard him, because I’m a competitive guy and I consider it a challenge”. Strong added three rebounds and three assist to the stat list for the night also.

five minutes. “All year long we have been going to scouting reports on our opponents and we would somehow allow their top scorer to get free, so we got tired of that and we started to get up on him before he got the ball and forced the game a bit on him”. In closing Strong said he feels with the way things are going if the Tigers take it one game at a time they will get to the NCAA tournament.

As we talked more about the SWAC and how physical the games can sometimes get Strong added, “I’ve been raised on physical play so that’s kind of what I expect so I’m right at home in the SWAC”. Playing real hard has a way of rubbing off on everyone and according to Strong that’s his brand of basketball. “When guys are throwing elbows that just makes me work harder to stop them”. TSU TIGERS ROLL PAST UAPB 69-55 By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View The Texas Southern University Men’s basketball program continues to roll in Southwestern Athletic Conference play as they turned back the Golden Lions from Arkansas Pine-Bluff 69-55. It marked the fifth win in six games in SWAC action this season. Led by DaQuan Joyner’s 15 points and nine boards, the Tigers jumped to an early lead and never let up. Even when the Lions closed to within eight points, it was Joyner who had a big put back and drew a foul for a three point play to increase the lead to 11 again. As the Tigers stayed around 11 points throughout the game, it was Fred Sturdivant slam that left no doubt in the closing minutes to seal it.

game with a team leading four assists and chipped in nine points in 23 minutes also. Taking advantage of every opportunity, the Tigers coaching staff lead by Tony Harvey who’s

in his third season with the Tigers moved to 5-1 in conference play. Harvey is assisted by John Keith LeBree, Marc Hsu and Walter Pitts while Pointer Williams is with basketball operations.

The Way I See It By BIG John Chandler This is a column that I had no intention of writing. Truly I really hate to write this, but the incidents that have occurred have to be addressed. Violence has so increased at youth sporting events that sadly much needed security must be in place. I have watched our high school athletic events and wonder when something terribly wrong will occur. It just did and it makes me cringe with anger and sadness to report it. Recently Manvel and La Marque played a boys basketball game in La Marque. Manvel, the states number five ranked team prevailed 60-45. Some La Marque fans didn’t like the results of the game including the officiating but that’s sports. The team was boarding their bus for the trip back to Manvel when three cars pulled in front of the bus and began yelling at the team. Head coach Greg Devers was punched in the face and suffered a black eye as a result. Fan violence has occurred in Florida, Alabama and Tennessee. It has occurred at peewee events! Violence has occurred at non sanction school events. I always thought that tight security was needed at professional games but youth sports? But sadly the real truth is tighter security at high school and youth sports are mandatory for safety of everyone attending those events. Some hooligans believe they have the right to express their violent opinions at little league

soccer games when the participants are just five years old. Instruments of violence-weapons are brought to the stadiums and if the moron dislikes an official’s call, the coach’s decision regarding players or plays or just the player him/herself they will instigate violence. Maybe it’s just cheering for the other team. That could get a fan assaulted violently or killed. This has gone way beyond enjoying young people with God-given athletic talents expressing themselves to the fullest. We are watching our society crumble before us and for what. We want to attack someone because their team beat our team. We want to physically assault an official for making a judgment call. Let’s remember that a judgment call was made by an imperfect human being at the spur of the moment. I can’t say I liked to lose. No, I never liked it and never will. But I learned to win with class and lose with grace. I learned that losing helps you become better because a person will prepare themselves for every possible scenario that can occur during a game. Those lessons transferred to life itself. I’ve lost just as many times as I have one. The losses hurt but I got over them. The enjoyment of winning is short because the new contest jumps right at you and you must be prepared to take it on. Violence at youth sports hurts the very ones that need to learn

In The Love Corner By Stevie T

LOVE RESOLUTIONS Hey Houston, We made it to another year. Did you have any love resolutions for 2012? A lot of times we wait for a new year to make changes in our lives, whether it is losing weigh, or to stop smoking, or to adjust our love lives. Of course there shouldn’t be a time line on something that is affecting the way you feel, your happiness, the way you look. If you are in a relationship that is wrong for you and just not working, there is no need to stay in that situa-

tion. We tend to stay in bad relationships too long because we think we can fix it, or that the other person will eventually change, Sometimes Love can blind us to the point where we can’t see the obvious. People around us can see, our love ones can see, but we can’t see what is right for us. Sometimes we spend weeks, months, even years before we realize we made a mistake, or chalk it up to life experiences. Of course we will hit a bump every now and then

Page 21

SECURITY AT YOUTH SPORTS IS A SAD REALITY these lessons-the youth themselves. It creates a cold dark environment that benefits no one. It destroys the very reason we attend youth sports: to escape the reality of everyday life even for a few short minutes. We must as fans demand that school administrators provide mandatory security at athletic events. We must as fans to allow security checks at stadium entrances. We must as fans report drunken hooligans to security officials so they can be escorted out of the building.

Finally we must report obnoxious behavior weapon possession and fights when we witness it. Some will read this and say ‘that’s going too far or that’s no of my business’. Or some will sit at home and not attend youth events. I believe so much bad behavior occurs is because people sit around and do nothing to stop it. We can’t allow these hooligans to destroy the very things we enjoy. Just remember, the next incident could involve someone you know and love. I don’t want my failure to prevent

an incident to be on my mind for the rest of my life. Security is a sad reality at youth sporting events but an important reality for us all.

in our relationships, no relationship will be perfect, but if the road is bumpy more than it is smooth we probably need to a close look at things, Sometimes the heart can persuade the the mind not to do what is truly right for us. I recently received an email from a lady who had been in an abusive relationship with her boyfriend of four years. She said that in the beginning everything was great, but the last three years was filled with abusive language and distrust.. They had a child so she thought she would take the abuse because the child needed his dad. It’s true a child needs their father, but if you don’t get along and it shows in front of the children, it will eventually affect them, and sometimes more than you think. If you wait to long it will cause

everyone to suffer. Make sure you join me and Carletta Shepard on Wednesdays nights at 8pm for In The Love Corner. We discuss everyday topics concerning love and relationships and you can call in and weigh in. The top love songs of the month are 1 Save the Best for Last Vanessa Williams 2 Ooh Baby Baby Smokey Robinson 3 Sweet Love Anita Baker 4 When a Man Loves a Woman Percy Sledge 5 So Amazing Luther Vandross. The biggie of lover’s holidays is coming up. Of course I’m talking about Valentines Day. Make sure you do something nice for that special person in your life. It doesn’t have to be much, a card, a single flower. If they are away a simple phone call or I

love you will do. You can also join me at Cafe 4212 on Sunday, February 12 from 6pm till 10 for a Valentines Day Experience featuring the Lovely Charlie Berry and other great local talent. For more info call 832 498 0654. Also listen to my show Monday thru Friday for your chance to win tickets. I will also host a Pre Valentines Blues and Zydeco Show featuring Andre Lee, Jabo and LIL Jab and Rue Davis at Club Taylor’s for more info call 713 204 9554 and tell Stevie T told me too. So until next time keep a little love in your heart, the look of love in your eyes and don’t let a day go bye without telling someone you love them, even if that someone is you.

I dedicate this column in loving memory of mother G.D. Chandler. January 8, 2008 will forever be that saddest day of my life. Four years have passed and the tears still well in my eyes. She is a part of my heart forever. That’s just the way I see it!

MICHAEL PETRIZZO QUIETLY BUILT A LEGACY AT KCOH RADIO 1430 AM By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View For those of us who have listened to KCOH 1430 AM for many years, we are certainly saddened by the loss of longtime majority owner and general manager Michael Patrick Petrizzo. He simply went about his day to day operation and every full moon he would come on the air and address an issue he felt was very well needed. One of greatest moves was the adding of a morning talk show and later hired Michael Harris to host it. A few years down the road when KYOK 1590 AM changed its format, Petrizzo quickly signed up Ralph Cooper to do their sports. Throw in the fact he already had radio legend Wash Allen and the then up and

coming Don Samuel. Teaming with his sidekick Travis Gardner, the two built KCOH from a small station into a big time player in the MetroHouston and now on the net a world-wide perspective. Others brought into the fold included Stevie ‘Good Times’ Talton and Tommy D. Armstrong to name a couple. As the years went on ‘Mr. P.’ as some called him, was always opening up the airways to those who were trying to get their message out, like of Dr. E. W.Watkins, along with the late minister Robert Woods to name a couple.

Born September 26, 1922 in New York, Petrizzo was the sixth of seven children to Erminia DeStefano-Petrizzo and Michael Petrizzo. While a Second Lieutenant serving the U.S. Air Force, Pitrezzo visited Houston for the first time on assignment at Ellington Air Force Base in 1944. Trained to pilot the B-17 Flying Fortress and the B-24 Liberator, he went to become a navigator on the B29 Super Fortress. But one day before he was due to go out on a bombing mission, Japan surrendered and World War II ended. The young and talented Pitrezzo went on the serve in the Air Force Reserve and retired from active duty as a major. It was on to Brooklyn College in New York and Pitrezzo would get his Bachelor of Arts Degree from the New York school. He then went to work for Lyke Shipping Company in New York. He was

later transferred to their Houston Operation. In 1956 he took a position as an accountant with KCOH 1430 AM and 20 years (1976) later as general manager he teamed with four others and bought the station. The rest is history as the station went to 5,000 watts and also started a 24-hour operation and other features such as AM Stereo and the internet would follow.

On behalf of all of us at King Arthur’s Productions and A King-Size View and Kingsizeview.com we want to extend our condolences to the family. Sleep on ‘Mr. P.’ for a job well done!

On Wednesday January 11, 2012 Mr. Petrizzo quietly passed away after a brief illness. ‘Mr. P.’ leaves to mourn his wife of 62 years Armida and four children Michael Joseph Petrizzo (Lana), Joe Ann Creamer (Mike), Jerry Petrizzo all of Houston, Texas also Tom Petrizzo (Teri) of Fayetteville, Arkansas and one granddaughter Alexandra Cramer of Houston, Texas.

ROLAND ROGERS A GENTLE GIANT LAID TO REST

By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Longtime Houston Independent School District teacher and coach Roland Rogers passed away on December 28, 2011 after a brief illness. Rogers, a Houston native, was born on November 17, 1942 and attended Douglas Elementary, Miller Junior and Worthing Senior High School. He went to receive his graduate degree from Texas Southern University. While in high school Rogers lettered in six sports and played both football and basketball at TSU and was quickly recognized as Most Outstanding Freshman and was name All-Southwestern Athletic Conference for two years. He was signed by the Washington Redskins of the National Football League. A knee injury ended his career earlier on and Rogers did however play several years in semi-pro leagues. His teaching career begun at Central High School in Newark, New Jersey, where he coached track and was defensive co-0rdinator for their football program

as well. In 1974 Rogers came home and took over the girls head coaching position at Jones High School. He also coached football moving on to become the defensive coordinator on Jones great 1985 team under the leadership of the legendary James ‘Bo’ Humphery. After Humphery retired ‘Bear’ Rogers became Jones head coach and led them to several more district titles before retiring.

Known for his great defensive skills as a player and as a coach Rogers or ‘Popeye’ as his friends called him sent several of his players to their highest levels. Those include Alfred Williams who left Jones and went Colorado and made AllAmerican before being taken by the Bengals in the NFL and later traded to Denver where he was a member of their Super Bowl teams. During his track coaching career Jones also worked with Darrell Green of the Washington Redskins who was later inducted into Pro football Hall of Fame. My mind reflects back to 1983 when we started covering girls’ basketball in Metro-Houston. At the time ‘Bear’ Rogers was the head girls coach at Jones and had some good talent but his daughter Rhonda Rogers-Hunt played at Madison. So Coach Maurice Davis of Madison turned Rhonda loose on the Lady Falcons. After the game coach Rogers went over to Coach Davis and whispered “Man I didn’t know Rhonda could play that well”. Coach Davis replied “Well man she’s your daughter and I’m glad to have her on my team”. Rhonda

Rogers went on to lead the Lady Marlins to the Region III tournament and later that year she finished second in the shot put at the state track meet in Austin. Rogers went on to have a great career at Prairie View. making Roland and Pauline very proud.

After one of Jones wins in 1985 we asked Coach Humphery about his defense and he deferred the question to Coach Rogers. So I went over to shake hands with ‘Bear’ and his massive hands nearly came halfway up my skinny little arm. I was almost afraid to ask him questions about the Falcons defense. But he was just as nervous as I was because he really didn’t like meeting the press for fear he would say what was on his mind. The gentle giant chose his words very carefully but he answered all my question straight forward. Over the years he never really liked meeting the media but we worked well together. He would always ask me when I turned the tape off and how did he do. With so many fun memories of covering Coach Rogers’ teams we recall the first time we had him on the radio at KYOK on Prep Talk. He was so shy and kept rattling his keys on the table and the mike was picking it up. So by the time we were deep in the hour long show, Darrell Ardison and I were holding his hand still and he gave us a great interview. The giant of a man had such a kind heart and was loved by all who came in contact with him over the years. His players respected him very much and followed his instructions and they moved on to the next level

with pride.

Rogers found Christ at an early age at Jordan Grove Missionary Baptist Church and reunited with his church in 2010 Rogers leaves to mourn a loving and faithful wife Pauline, their devoted children Rodney, Asia of Gran Prairie, Texas, Rhonda (Purvis Hunt) of Houston, Texas and Regina of Houston, Texas. Three grandchildren Raevyn, Richon, Ryan and Regham, One aunt Nora Williams, special cousins Emily Rufus Hill, lifelong friends Floyd Miller and Jessie Hurst and many coaches, former teammates and friends as well as media admirers. Due to his enormous work ethic, Rogers won a few awards in his days starting out with our Forward Times “Coach of the Week” along with his 2006 induction into the Prairie View Interscholastic League Coaches Association Hall of Fame. The 2006-07 Houston Independent

School District Coaches Association Hall of Honor, USA Track and Field Gulf Association “John Phillips” Award, Houston Texans “Coach of the Week”, TSU Track and Field recognition award for over 40 years of service are some his other awards. In his spare time Rogers was very fond of fishing and spent most of his retirement days on the bays of water off the Gulf of Mexico. The ‘Bear’ is hibernating in Heaven these days so I must say sleep well ‘Bear’ because you did a fine job during your stay on earth. It warmed my heart two years ago when Rhonda Rogers-Hunt and Mary Miller-Young teamed with Bea Washington-Phillips to put together a dinner to honor retiring Coach Barbara Jacket at P.V. It’s things like that that goes to show what positive influence Rogers had on his family and may God bless them all!

A look at Roland “Bear” Rogers; May the gentle Giant rest in peace
