Behind The Wheel With THE KING (Arthur Prayther)
2014 ACURA MDX
Over the past 13 or 14 years we have not been behind the wheel of Acura products but we are please to be able to test them more often these days. Thus we were behind the wheel of the new Acura MDX AWD Advance for this report. Man-o-Man we got a solid look at this smooth riding vehicle with all the bells and whistles. To start with the new MDX is powered by a 290 horse powered 3.5 Liter SOHC 24-valve direct injection VTEX V6 engine with variable cylinder management. This powerful yet smooth running engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with sequential Sportshif and SH-AWD system. The road is greeted by P245 55R 19-inc All-season tires circulating around a set of 19” X 8.0” Alloy Wheels. We are on the topic of big time luxury. The color schemes for the new MDX came with Forest Mist
Metallic with eucalyptus interior simply getting the attention of many as we motored up and down the streets of Houston, Texas during our weeklong test period. The smooth ride we are talking about is due to the Macpherson Strut front Suspension and rear multi-link suspension with integrated Dynamic system. On the safety side the new MDX has driver and front passenger dual-stage air bags and driver and front passenger side air bags with smart vent, plus side curtains air bags with rollover sensor. Couple that with knee air bags and Vehicle Stability assist, anti-locking brakes, electronic brake distribution and agile Handling assist dynamic braking system. Yes it also has a tire pressure monitoring system. Inside the driver and passengers are pleasantly introduced to a 10-way power seat with driver recognition memory system as well as heated front seats. By the way the vehicle is also equipped with push button ignition.
A new layout that looks very modern with a multi-angle rearview camera with dynamic guidelines with on demand multi-Use display touch screen. SILVERADO HIGH COUNTRY 4WD CREW GIVES NEW MEANING TO LUXURY TRUCKS By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View As Americans continue to move forward it is becoming more clear the Bailout at General Motors is truly paying off. All one has to do is look at the product lines coming from the Gigantic Automakers and keep in mind literally hundreds of thousands people are still employed as a result of the decision made a few years ago. Fact is the new Chevy Silverado High Country 4WD Crew truck is not only one of the best of the road, but it is well put together to say the least. Clearly the quietest riding truck from GM ever and still it manages to offer all the features you’ve come to expect from this automaker. To begin with the new 2014 truck was a hit at the Houston Auto Show along with the new 2015 Cadillac Escalade and the new Chevy SS. The High Country gets a big 5-star rating from the NTHSA with 5-star frontal crash rating for both driver and front passengers along with side crashes rating of 5-star for both front and rear riders and a 4-star roll over. When it comes to power the big truck power plant is a 6.2 Liter V-8 VVT direct injection with

Towing for this model is 9,500 pounds with 3.42 axel and Max Payload is 1,957 pounds and GVWR 7,200 pounds. This truck has 42.8 inches of front seat head room and 40.5 inches of rear head room. The leg room figures are 45.3 front and 40.9 in the rear. In the rear is a 5 feet 8 inch Cargo Box and a smooth riding 143.5 inch wheelbase balances out well with an overall 80 inch width. The makeup of the new High Country is 40 per cent of its parts are from the United States and Canada while 51 per cent is from Mexico with the final assembly point being Silao, GL Mexico with both the engine and transmission built right here in the U S. When it comes to warranties Chevy stands with this vehicle with 5-year/100,000 mile power train warranty and 24-hour roadside assistance. Scheduled maintenance 2 year/24,000 miles oil and filter, 4 wheel tire rotation see your local dealer for details on this matter.
For those who want a little less power there is a 5.3 Liter V8 ECOTEC3 available for this model. Our test vehicle came in Deep Ruby Red Metallic and was fully leathered interior. The new instrument cluster is easy to read with big full bright letters and numbers. Seats are full feature leather appointed buckets and the driver seat has memory as well as heat and cooled seats for driver and front passenger. The rear seat is 60/40 folding bench and rides super great. THE A-NOTE with Aaron Watson
COAL VS DIAMOND
We have a rarely used transformative power within us. It is seldom used because it's not popular, and it often times does not translate directly into dollars. Most of the time it gives others the spotlight. This power simply put is "the coal before it becomes a diamond".
feel a certain way and has yet to produce. Not only did it not produce, now it's taking up space that could be used for something else more productive. This should be proof enough that it's time to start thinking, because your mind can become cluttered the same way.
Giving has been and will continue to be the great gift of all human beings. We can change a life with a simple word or even a show of gratitude. We are all great but with the understanding of this thought I posted on Facebook.
In most of my articles I stress giving whether it is time, advice, or money it doesn't matter, just give! I also want to make it clear that the first person to give to is yourself. Without giving to yourself first your gifts to others are not gifts at all. Then perhaps this article could be read as one looks around their home and think of you when they realize they have a bunch of stuff that didn't fulfill on its purpose.
"One of the greatest feats in the human journey is not what somebody did first, but that someone saw it being done and was inspired to try and do it better." Let's make this the year that we figure out what is really productive for us. Not what the people say, or the television commercials say, but WHAT WE SAY. Look around your home at all of the things sitting around that you were told would do something for you or make you
Quick Keys to this article: We all have the power to transform our lives and the lives of others. This won't make us rich and famous directly, but over time you will be extremely blessed.
Define what you want in 2014. Give only after you have given to yourself.

Coal vs Diamond: If asked; the world will suggest that the masses will take a diamond over a mountain of coal everyday of the week. Here's why: Diamonds: They look good, cost a lot of money, and they shine. If it's big enough it will bring you a lot of attention. Coal: It's not good to look at, it's messy and it's claim to fame is that if you haven't been good Santa will put a lump of it in your Christmas stocking. The winner here is pretty clear, right? That is unless you take into consideration that if you drive a car coal produces the gas that keeps it going, in addition coal probably made the steel that made some parts of the car itself. If you consider that when the electricity goes out you can use charcoal to cook food, perhaps even if the electricity doesn't go out electricity is still harnessed and manifested by the power of coal. And lastly consider that the very diamonds we are comparing are made from coal. I would say in 2014 going forward, look for more coal than diamonds.

Out and About with John Engel (ALMOST) FREE TRANSPORTATION Many years ago Austin had a program that used old bicycles that were refurbished and painted a bright yellow. There were docking stations all over town and bike use was free. Residents were encouraged to grab a bike and ride it to their destination then leave it for the next user. When it was time to go back you simply grabbed another
Page 9
bike. This was a worthwhile project and saw a lot of success. Recently a commercial venture has taken over this concept in Austin and many other communities around the country. Currently a total of 25 cities in the United States and one in Santiago, Chile have access to the B-cycle programs. Houston is one of these B-cycle cities. To use the B-cycle you must become a member. There are three types of membership, one day for $5.00, seven day for $15.00 and annual for $65.00. Each membership entitles you to unlimited use of a bicycle for the membership period. Some membership levels require a credit card for membership. A recent change in policy allows memberships to be paid with debit cards. Although not currently in use, a scholarship program is being developed for qualified low income residents that could lower the annual membership to $20.00. If you purchase an annual membership you will receive a B-card that allows you to grab a bicycle much quicker. How it works is fairly simple, you go to any kiosk that has the B-cycle bikes. There are about 30 stations with more on the way. Most are located in the Central Business District with additional locations in the Museum District, White Oak, Memorial, and near all the stadiums. There are several stations very close to the Metro Rail stations. New kiosks are coming in the University of Houston, Rice University and Texas Southern University areas. The latest station was set up in the Clayton
You pay your membership or use your B-card to secure a bicycle. The station will release your bike and for the next 60 minutes it is yours to use. If you wish to ride longer than 60 minutes you simply dock and undock the bike at any station. You may do this as many times as you wish during the membership period. If you are using the bicycle to get around town for business or an appointment you can dock the bicycle then grab another when you are done. If you keep the bicycle for over 60 minutes and do not dock it there is a fee of $2.00 for each 30 minutes you use it. The bicycles in Houston are bright red and equipped with a large basket on the handlebars to carry your cargo. Each is also equipped with a built in lock so you may go into the store and make purchases. They are designed for one rider and not set up to carry young children or pets. The one speed bikes have adjustable seats and are in like new condition. Geared for easy pedaling, the bicycle I rode was comfortable and well maintained. Getting around the downtown area and most of the Medical Center is much easier and quicker on two wheels. Many roads have bike lanes but bicycles are not permitted on sidewalks. If the road does not have a bicycle lane, Houston law requires you to ride with the flow of traffic in the right most lane of traffic. Vehicular traffic is required to pass you in a safe manner and yield to you if you are in the proper lane. Whenever you ride a bicycle, especially in heavy traffic, you should wear a helmet. A pilot program has been started in Madison, Wisconsin at the
request of several handicapped people that were uncomfortable riding two wheeled bicycles. Several three wheeled adult tricycles have been placed in service to judge the reaction. The feedback has been positive and we may see some of these in our town. This is an interesting program and has to potential to improve transportation in our town.
Although cycling in the heat of the summer may be a bit uncomfortable, nothing beats the freedom of riding a bike amid the tall buildings. It is nice to have another option for getting around and, like me, some us would benefit from the exercise! For more information visit Bcycle Houston at: www.bcyclehouston.com.

DEFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK:
WILMAN OCORO-NORTH FOREST By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Wing player Wilman Ocoro helped to control the middle of the lane and forced Sharpstown to settle for outside shots while they whipped the class clean with rebounds all game long. “Oh I was impressed with the way Sharpstown never gave us and they played us hard”. As we talked more with Ocoro we learned he felt pretty good about his team chances of winning the district title. “Yes sir this win makes us feel pretty good because we went through a rough stretch but we’ve found ourselves”. When the rematch comes back to going against the district leading Wheatley Wildcats who beat them by 5 points the first time. “Sir I feel we have a passing team and no high rollers, plus we hustle on defense and get rebounds”. The team works hard in practice
on boxing out and there inside people worked over Sharpstown pretty good and it may have been the difference in the game!

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK ELIJAH LEWIS-NORTH FOREST As the district gets into the second half the Bull Dogs of North Forest edged Sharpstown 64-56 to remain only a game behind first place Wheatley for the HISD Class 4A title. Elijah Lewis led the way with 26 points including two critical free throws following a big steal to put the game away in overtime after a 52-52 tied.

Lewis started out by praising sharps town as a pretty good team that played well on both ends of the court. But it was his key steal and a big bucket to put the game on ice for North
Forest. “I want to thank my team for getting me the ball when I was open and I simply made the bucket”. According to Lewis all his team has to do is play big and they will win big. “Oh I think we can be real good if we keep working hard and everyone plays their role we can go a long ways. In the end it was Lewis who also sank two key free throws to seal the win. With the balance this team has and the way they attack the rim they could very well make a big run when playoffs time comes around.

A RISING STAR: WAYNE ELLIS
NORTH FOREST By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View With the game on the line the Bull Dogs of North Forest high school came from 6 points down two times to beat Sharpstown in overtime. Wayne Ellis is one of the guys who made a good showing for North Forest and we spoke with him after the win. “Our hustle and our defense is to key to our success and each time we went on the floor we knew if we worked hard on defense we could come out with a win”. That’s what happened as they took the game to remain only one game behind
Wheatley for the district lead. We couldn’t help but ask what was it like working under coach Jenkins. “It’s been great because before the game she talks to us and make us feel good about our game and it makes us be are good as we can be”. Ellis went on to say he feels the team can even go to state if they continue to play together and work hard game in and game out. If that’s the case this team is going to have a lot to say about how the class 4A region III shapes up.

THIS WEEK IN BASKETBALL-NORTH FOREST BEATS SHARPSTOWN IN OT By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View The Sharpstown Apollos scored the first four points in overtime and never scored any more as the Bull Dogs from North Forest snapped the cords for 12 unanswered points and won the game 64-56. It kept them only one game behind first play Wheatley who pounded Milby 107-69. Elijah Lewis led the way with 26 points including four in overtime. Devon Wiley hit a trey from the corner to tie the game at 56 and it was all North Forest from that point. The team went through a coaching change this week as Melody Jenkins a female assistant took over the team three days before they got their win over Sharpstown.
The players rallied behind her and said they look forward to her leadership as they roll toward the playoffs in district 21-4A. In other games in this district Waltrip whipped Lee 6343, Davis edged Austin 65-59. Over in district 23-3A the Jack Yates Lions roared past Scarborough 101-34, Worthing pounded Kashmere 80-42, Sterling whipped Jones 84-49, and Washington rolled past Furr 74-66. In HISD class 5A action Sam Houston beat Chavez 69-51 while Westside rolled over Westbury 86-38 and Bellaire beat Madison 60-41. In Girls action Bellaire Chavez 67-46 and Yates rolled over Furr 83-32. orth Forest squad with coach Melody Jenkins at Butler moments after beating Sharpstown 64-56 in OT - Photo by Dr. Victor Keys
COACH OF THE WEEK: MELODY JENKINS-NORTH FOREST By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View With roughly six and one half years under her belt coach Melody Jenkins was thrust into the boys head coaching position at North Forest High School this week and made the most of it. Already the assistance on the squad when circumstances dictated the head coach is no longer with the program, Jenkins sprung into action and took charge. “I’m proud of the guys and they have been working hard and I’m thoroughly confidence in this group of guys”. The former Forest Brook track star who went to UT added God put her in this position and she plans to roll with it. “It’s does-
n’t matter if you are male or female as long as you are giving the kids what they need to be successful”. Jenkins went on to add this team can go all the way to state if they continue to work hard. “We kind of got a little rattled at one point but we called a time and told them to get back to North Forest Basketball and take it on home and that’s what our team did out there today. With a B S degree in Health and Promotion Fitness and a Masters in Health Administration on her resume, Jenkins won the district championship at Hartman and coached softball at Worthing before coming back home to North Forest. “Sure it’s a big change for teachers, administrators and students but our team
hasn’t let that bother them they just trying to play North Forest Basketball“. In closing Jenkins says she is trying to keep her team focused one game at a time and they are looking forward to their second half match up against the Wildcats of Wheatley high school. It’s been years since we started covering high school sports in 1982 when there were many men coaching girls basketball and now we have a woman coaching boys basketball. But Melody Jenkins is doing a fine job for North Forest and we look forward to following her as she takes her team toward the playoffs!

WHAT IS TRUTH? ENTER YE IN AT THE STRAIT GATE Dear reader, as always, it is again a blessing to be able to share with you some scriptural truths. Again, we can never thank Mr. Prayther enough. Truly, there are MA Y in the religious world today proclaiming to belong to Christ, “Christians”: Loving this world and enjoying the things that are in it, “on our way to HEAVE .” But The LORD and SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST says the opposite. In Matt. the7th chapter, verses 13 and 14 Jesus as he taught his disciples on the mount said, the way, the gate, that leadeth to DESTRUCTIO (which is Hell), is broad and wide (which is easy) and MA Y will go there. Then he continues to teach, the way, the gate that leadeth unto LIFE (which is life eternal in HEAVEN), is strait and narrow (which is a suffering) and FEW there be that find it. Of that FEW we believe there will be even FEWER willing to suffer and follow the strait and narrow path of the apostle’s doctrine, which is found in New Testament scripture. Lord willing, these are the two scriptures we will attempt to examine by scripture. Now let’s read exactly what the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ said: “Matt 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” This is simply stated, we believe Jesus Christ how about you? Jesus also warned them of false prophets in verse; “15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.”
The apostle Peter warns the church of the same thing, let’s read: 2 Pet 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many shall follow their (1)pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. 3 And through (2)covetousness shall they with (3)feigned words make (4)merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.(KJV) Definitions:(1)pernicious ways766 aselgeia (as-elg’-i-a); licentiousness (sometimes including other vices): KJV— filthy, las-
civiousness, wantonness.1. (adj.) Exhibiting unrestrained or inordinate interest in sex: (2) through covetousness-4124 pleonexia (pleh-on-ex-ee’-ah); from 4123; avarice, i.e. (by implication) fraudulency, extortion: KJV— covetous (-ness) practices, greediness, greedy desire to have more, covetousness, avarice. (3)feigned words-4112 plastos (plas-tos’); from 4111; moulded, i.e. (by implication) artificial or (figuratively) fictitious (false): KJV— feigned. (4) make merchandise of you-1710 emporeuomai (empor-yoo’-om-ahee); KJV— buy and sell, make merchandise. 4) to use a person or a thing for gain
The apostles are consistent with God through the Lord Jesus in their teachings, being guided by the Holy Ghost; whereby when we read we will understand their knowledge in Christ (Eph.3:17; Col.4:15-18; 1Thes.5:27-28; 2Pet.1:15-21; 3:1-2; 1John4:46; Jude1:16-18). The Lord and Savour Jesus Christ said in John chapter 12 verses 25-26, “He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.” We cannot have it our way, if we belong to Christ “Christians”. We must do it His way because, we are not our own. We have been bought with a price (1Cor.6:19-20; 7:22-23). Christians must DENY themselves, take up their cross DAILY and follow him (Luke 9: 22-26). The blueprint of The One Body, The One Church that Christ is building (Matt.16:1318; Acts 2: 41-47), is found in The Apostles’ Doctrine, which is in New Testament Scriptures. This is the Church of and by Christ (Rom.16:16-18; Eph.3:17-21; 4:1-6). Now, let us scripturally examine a command given by The LORD and SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST, as he was teaching his disciples on the mount. Then we will study the verification of this command to the church, through the apostles’ word/doctrine (John 17:1623), as it authenticates and defines those that belong to Christ. He that hath an ear let him hear, and then strive to do, if we are to be one in Christ Jesus. The Lesson: Enter ye in at the strait gate Let’s allow the (1) preponderance of scripture and definitions
to interpret the 13th verse of Matt.7, as is our practice. (1)Preponderance-Having superior weight, force, importance, or influence (of scripture). WHAT IS TRUTH? CONTINUED Matt 7:21 ot every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. According to scripture, this is not what Jesus said. Lord willing, we will scripturally examine this doctrine at another time. Please read: “Luke 6:46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” In Jesus name, means by his authority and what Jesus authorizes is found in the apostles doctrine; but for now Please read: Matt 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Mark 16:14 Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen. 15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

WHAT IS TRUTH? CONTINUED John 17:20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; 21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. 2 Pet 3:1 This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: 2 That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour: 3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days (1)scoffers, walking after their own lusts, Definition:(1)scoffers-1703 empaiktes ; a derider, i.e. a false teacher: KJV— scoffer.)

REO Community Development Premiere Asset ServicesSM (PAS), a division of Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, seeks to stabilize communities by partnering with municipalities, nonprofit organizations, and land banks. Wells Fargo provides sustainable homeownership opportunities for neighborhoods and communities by providing a first look to approved organizations and donating low-value properties. Discounted and donated properties are transferred with all taxes paid current and liens satisfied. Properties not sold through the first look program or donation are typically repaired and marketed to owner occupants to further stabilize communities. The National Community Stabilization Trust (NCST), a nonprofit partner of PAS, conducts all organizational vetting, on boarding, and provides tools for the acquisition process. After an organization is approved, they work in conjunction with the NCST and Wells Fargo to acquire properties via the donation program or the NCST First Look Program.

THE COLLEGE SPORTS REPORT Jerry Woodley EW SHERIFF I TOW There's a new sheriff in town and his name is "Charles Rene Strong." He has been given the reigns to "The University of Texas Longhorns Football, " program. He is being charged with restoring life, into a once very proud college football program, "The University of Texas Longhorns." The old Horns (money) lost out to the young Horns (money) on this decision. "Change gon' come." One old Horn made his displeasure public, "Red" McCombs. The other, Joe Jamail has yet, but his pen has been mightier, "Mack's" contract. To put all this in prospective, a little history lesson may be necessary. Texas was last all white National Football Champion (69). Was one the last teams in old SWC to integrate football. And since this is about football let's keep it here. That is the driving force on any college campus. It is the brand that basically pays for all other sports, whether revenue baring or not. Without losing sight of what has happened. So, you can truly understand what just happened at the "Flagship Program of the State of Texas. " Alabama is the best parable. Coach "Bear" Bryant had wanted colored players on his team, but couldn't get it accepted by administrator's. "The Game," is played and football history is changed. Closer to home, former Texas A&M Coach Sherman had said before
he left "Aggieland," "that A&M was already better than UT." Well that has been proven pretty quickly, enter Kevin Sumlin. Whether that was a deciding factor or not, it won't be answered publicly, but privately, yes. What did get everyone's attention, WINNING. Winning in the SEC! That changed a lot of recruits minds also. A&M/SEC, a game changer. And lastly, will this work. My opinion, I believe it will. Change the football mentality. No more soft perception by others.(opponents and /NFL) Coach Strong made several statements. "It's time to close the Borders."(recruiting) "Return to prominence."(winning a championship) Contract says 5 years, but, will he be given real time. Can't answer that. Hope the hicups along the away wont hurt. Only time will tell. A EW CHAMPIO Florida State proved that Freshman QB's, can take you to the promise land, if you've got the right one. Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston, took on all critiques and persevered. With off the fields issues going on he kept his wits about him and stayed the course. Florida State ran the table (14-0), wins their 3rd National Championship. (93' 99' 2013)
Auburn's Gus Malzahn wins Paul "Bear" Bryant College Coach of the Year Award. Beating out Baylor's Art Briles, Michigan State's Mark Dantonio, Rice's David Bailiff, and Stanford's David Shaw. UCO IS MAKI G STATEME TS UH ME FI DI G LIFE Duke attempted, lost by 22(8361). Baylor came close, never led but kept game close 11(6655). Other than AAC foe Cincinnati, lost by 33, (67-34) to keep UCONN from scoring 70pts. Stanford tried, 19(76-57). Are you seeing a clear picture. #1UCONN (19-0) is definitely making statements this season so far. Geno has his team focused on another championship and nothing else. Can anybody knock this train off the track. Not anytime soon. The American Athletic Conference doesn't have the same landscape to infuriate a good challenge to stop the train down. There does seem a few that may slow them down. I feel that Louisville will step up. Baylor showed that mistakes are not tolerated to be successful against UCONN. Depth, late in a game is what keeps UCONN successful. That many All-Americans on the bench, can make a difference in any game. UCONN WBB rolled onto the U of H campus, and won 90-40. UH Men BB (11-7,3-2) still has life, early in The American Athletic Conference. They've answered questions against UCONN(75-71), USF(67-58), CINN(60-61), LVILLE(52-91), and rebuilding Rutgers(77-55). Got to keep it up though, January schedule hasn't been

easy with 3 to go. At Memphis, SMU, and at UCONN. SWAC ME 'S WOME 'S BB Yes folks, TSU basketball is alive and kicking in Houston. Both the Men's(8-10,4-2) and Women's BB(8-9,5-1) program are in good standing these day's. They are making there 1st road trips through the SWAC. While PV M (6-12,3-2)& W(3-13,3-3) BB on the other hand are struggling. Both teams are dealing with consistency issues. The SWAC can make you pay when your team make mistakes, especially late in a game. The question moving forward for PV will be if they can overcome their inconsistence play. TSU's Coach Davis and Coach Hayes-Perry will have to keep their particular teams steady as they overcome the scoring binges, whether ahead or behind. RICE BB Jessica Kuster CUSA, Defensive Player of the Year(12-13), C-USA 1st team(13') has moved into second place on the scoring(1,837) for the Owls WBB program.(Pat Krieger 1,851, 79'-82'), She also moved into 1st place in rebounding last week in the Lady Owls game against storied program LaTech Lady Techsters. Her 15 rebs against the Lady Techsters gave her 1,194. Held formerly by Lauren Neaves(1,190, 03'07'). She is one of only two (Middle TENN Ebony Rowe) players in all Div1 WBB that returned this season averaging double-double(16). With their next Conference USA game against Tulane, Jan 29 home at Tudor. She should be able to cross that thresh hole. The month of January is being very good to the Lady Owls thus far. Men's BB is struggling, in all phases. Got a boost on Saturday. They won their 1st conference game this season. Beating Charlotte 71-69. With a stellar defensive effort down the stretch

to close out. And some hot three point shooting from Jr Seth Gearhart (4/7). Both Coach Braun and Seth (Gearhart) mentioned that it was a good win. As insignificantly as this sounds. During Coach Braun's tenure the Owls have not been shutout in conference play. And yes, they are still in the process of rebuilding from the exodus of players from a couple of years ago. Now it is about just competing. Not backing down, from anybody. Yes help is coming but it will be slow in coming because it is about getting the right kid to come to Rice. The team is 6-13,1-4, with their next game at UTSA on the road to finish out January. HBU BB Moving into The Southland Conference has been a rough going for the HBU Husky Men BB program. 4-15,1-6 the men are competing but coming up short. Transitioning can be traumatic or smooth. This seems a little bit of both. Since college basketball has conference tournaments. Your objectives are different. Get to the conference tournament and get one. While the Women (6-12,2-5) are starting to figuring some things out, like communicate better on the floor. Like Saturday a double o/t 85-84 loss to Southeastern Louisiana. Same holds here. Get to the tournament and look to get win and survive.

The Way I See It By BIG John Chandler HE SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED YO PLAY I doubt many people with agree with me. But the title of my column is the way I see it and trust me I see it this way. J.R. Smith of the New YORK Knicks should be suspended for the remainder of 2014 season. What he did (twice) was simply ridiculous and he doesn’t deserve to receive a paycheck. To refresh everyone’s memory, during a game several weeks ago, Smith was seen standing in the lane on the free throw line untying another player’s shoe string. The National Basketball Association League Office gave Smith a stern warning about his behavior and guess what he did;
the same thing again the very next game. Sure he was fined but it angered Knick head coach Mike Woodson (a former player who happened to play for Bob Knight) got the blessing of the Knick front office to be able to follow through with refusing to play Smith for five games. Woodson received standing ovations for both home and away crowds. I wish King Arthur could award this ‘alleged’ player the ‘King’s Goat of the Week Award! Smith was seen sitting on the bench sulking and would not go with his teammates to the team huddle during time out. I’m always asked why Iove high
STUDENT OF THE WEEK DERON WILEY-NORTH FOREST As North Forest high school makes its transition to the Houston ISD junior guard Deron Wiley is making the most of it. “The main thing is to keep faith in God and sticking by my family, going to school and playing basketball like usual. While his team was battling Sharpstown to remain in second place behind Wheatley in the HISD class 4A district, Wiley hit a big trey to tie the score at 56 and his team outscored the Apollo’s the rest of the way for a 64-56 win. “We lost to Wheatley by 5 points in our first meeting against them but we feel we have came together more as a team and we get them at home the next time we play them”. Born Catholic but currently attending Baptist Church now, Deron feels he is still getting his share of God’s word and it has certainly made him a better person. “Yes sir, I understand the value of having God in my life and it has certainly made a difference if the way things go for me”. The soft spoken young man went on to add he feels he has gotten the best out of his young life and we not change a single thing if he could live it over again. On the subject of school changes if they made him the Principal at

Is there still any wonder why? I grow sick and tired of grown adults acting as bratty children. He should be thankful that I didn’t make the decision whether he should be allowed to play. The answer would be NO. This guy doesn’t respect authority, the game itself or other players. You won’t ever convince that parents, youth all the way up to col-
