Behind The Wheel With THE KING (Arthur Prayther)

TOYOTA HIGHLANDER LTD Dallas, Texas-Through the heavy rains we made the trip to Dallas for the Lone Star Idol Contest at the historic Granada Theater. Without a doubt it was well worth the trip and the Toyota Highlander Limited made the trip easy to say the least. At some point shortly after midnight the rain really fell hard, but

the well built Highlander keep right on trucking and Andre Odums and I made it home safely around 2.15 AM on Monday September 19, 2011. Speaking of safety the Highlander received a four-star rating for both driver and passenger in front crashes from the NHTSA and 5-star rating for

both front and rear seat in side crashes. Even a four-star rating for rollover and with all this it’s priced fewer than $40,000 fully equipped. Power comes from a proven 3.5 Liter DOHC V6 engine that cranks on a hard working 270 horsepower and is mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. This front wheel drive vehicle also has four-wheel independent suspension and expert handling. Power meets the road on P245/55R 19 inch tires wrapped around a 19 inch alloy wheel. The electronic power steering system certainly adds the handling capabilities of the product.

Through all this the vehicle manages to get 18 miles per gallon in the city and 24 miles per gallon on the highway. Those are good numbers and let me tell you we let the hammer down going and coming back from Dallas, Texas. Getting a new overall look the Highlander certainly looks more expensive that it really is. The front has projector beam headlamps and fog lamps along with color-keyed folding power heated mirrors. It also has puddle lamps and chrome door handles. Chrome roof rails and power tilt/slide moon roof. The power lift gate came in handy as we loaded equipment in and out of the rear cargo area. As the years have gone by Automakers all over the world have put more quality into mid-size SUVs and Toyota is right up at the top with the new Highlander LTD.

Page 2

Once you are inside you are greeted to a Toyota Luxury interior with easy to read gauges and big driver friendly knobs and buttons. The driver seat has 10way power adjustable and I set it and never had to adjust it anymore. After the trip to Dallas in three hours and 10 minutes and spending seven hours and 15 minutes there and then drove back, we woke up fresh and ready to go on Monday. There are no signs of the trip and that’s a true testimony on how well this vehicle travels. State of the art JBL sound system with DVD touch screen and even backup camera display, the Highlander meets all standards. In closing please allow me to add the new Toyota Highlander LTD is priced to sell and small families should really take a look at it!

The 2011 Toyota Highlander LTD truly a well-built mid-size SUV

THE 2011 GMC TERRAIN SLT READY TO ROLL By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Bastrop, Louisiana-As we made our annual trip to North Louisiana for the Winston Family reunion, my brother (Charlie Winston) and I took the GMC Terrain SLT. With plenty of room for comfort we made the five and one half hour trip and the weather was great for the most part. However we ran into some heavy rain just on the other side of Shreveport but by the time we got to Monroe it was good and sunny. The new Terrain is powered by an economically sound 2.4 Liter DOHC in-line four cylinders that produces 182 horsepower at 6700 RPM and 172 lbs per foot of torque at 4900 RPM. That

translated into 20 miles per gallon in the city and 29 miles per gallon on the highway. The roughness capability is hidden by a fancy looking set of lines and the overall styling would make one think it was more expensive that it really was. Our test vehicle maxed out at about $32,000. A chrome exterior appearance package gives the vehicle somewhat of a throwback look. But let me tell you this vehicle is up to date in every sense of the word.

60/40 split worked well when we had children in the vehicle as well as cargo. The rear cargo space was made use of as my sister and niece packed out some of those wonderful dishes to take to Monroe for the reunion gathering. Sounds comes from one of the most trusted names in audio, the Pioneer eight-speaker system with all the up-to-date features such as Bluetooth connectively

and MP3 playback capability. Needless to say Charlie and I certainly took advantage of that to listen to some E. J. on the way down there. We also would like to report the Terrain more than lived up to its billing when it came to economic performance and that made the trip a little easier on the wallet. Warranties for the Terrain

include the bumper to bumper three-year/ 36,000 miles and the five-year/100,000 mile power train warranty along with a sixyear/ 100,000 corrosion protection. In closing please allow me to add the leather appointed seats went well with the leather wrapped steering wheel. We enjoyed the trip and came away with a good feeling about the Terrain.

Inside the Terrain you are greeted the latest in technology and the eight-way power seat was easy to adjust to the just right setting to make the trip. The three row seats provided plenty of room and the second row

DODGE RAM 1500 TRADESMAN 4 X 2 HOLDING ON By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View The new Dodge Ram 1500 Tradesman 4by2 pickup truck is holding on in a crowded place in the market. We test drove the new Ram pickup truck the other day and it was odd to see a vehicle without the extended cab or

four doors. But let me make it clear this baby still gets the job done when it comes to work load. The long bed was suited for good hauling and the powerful 5.7 Liter V8 Hemi MDS VVT engine certainly has the power to take the load to its destiny. Fact is the Hemi engine drops to four cylinders when the

power is not needed and still manages to get14 miles per gallon in the city and 20 miles per gallon on the highway. A 32-gallon fuel take takes you longer distances between fill-ups. The five-speed automatic transmission 545 RFE transmission provides smooth shifting from one gear to the next.

Advance multi-stage front air bags and supplemental side-curtain front air bags add to the safety of the vehicle. Electronic stability control and anti-locking four-wheel disc brakes rounds out other features in this category.

vehicle.

A big 160 amp alternator gives you plenty of power to add all the auxiliary power needed for towing and outlet plugs and the likes. The Ram is equipped with a seven-pin wiring, with four-pin connector for towing and a fullsize spare tire.

A good warranty for the truck is five-year 100,000 power train limited warranty, while there is a three- year 36,000 mile basic limited warrant and 24-hour towing assistance with restriction applying. Both the engine and transmission are built in the US as well as 70% of the parts from US/Canada. However the final assembly point is Saltillo, Mexico for this Dodge Ram.

HAPPY 70TH BIRTHDAY GRAND CHEROKEE 4 X 4 By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View The old saying goes time flies when you are having fun. Well Jeep lovers know what that saying means, because the Jeep Grand Cherokee is celebrating 70 years on the market. Let me commend Chrysler Corporation for this homemade product and we certainly enjoyed our test run. With 71% of its parts from the US/Canada and the final assembly point of Detroit, Michigan and both the engine and transmission are home grown. To begin with the new Jeep has a very modern up to date look with smooth lines with a super flow. Fact is the first time I saw one I didn’t know what it was. Our test vehicle came in bright silver metallic clear-coat paint with black interior a perfect match. Under the hood is a proven 3.6 Liter 24-valve VVT engine

that’s matted to a five-speed automatic transmission. This translates into 16 miles per gallon in the city and 22 miles per gallon on the highway. Power moves to the pavement on P 245/70R 17 BSW on/off road tires circulating around a 17 inch X 8 inch aluminum wheel. There are 20 inches available on the optional package with aluminum polished wheels.

Safety comes in at a high premium also with a five-star rating for frontal crashed for the driver and four-star rating for front passenger. The side gets a five-star rating for both front and rear seats while the rollover is rated at four-star by the NHTSA. Inside the new Cherokee you are faced with a new refreshed instrument cluster with clear round gauges and medium size knobs for driver friendly operation. The driver seat it eight-way while the front passenger gets a

four-way power seat. In the rear the seats are 60/40 with reclining feature. The media center is a 430 CD/DVD/MP3/HDD with nine premium speakers with 506 watt amplifier and subwoofer. We are talking a very good clear sound. There us USB ports for mobile devices and a security alarm as well as remote start system. Let me add the new Cherokee also has a five-year or 100,000 miles power train limited warranty and three-year or 36,000 miles basic limited warranty, with 24-hour towing assistance with certain restriction applying. During the 7th Annual Fiesta Booker-Bryant Memorial Classic week people had an

opportunity to see the new 70th Anniversary Jeep up close. More than 8,000 fans braved the 106 degree temperature to watch the game won by Booker T. Washington 14-13 over Jack Yates.

A View From The Stands By Ryan McGinty The Lady Panthers are on a roll. Prairie View A&M's 3-0 volleyball sweep over Texas Southern Tuesday night at home pushed the team to its third win in a row and a 3-0 start in SWAC play before a boisterous season-high crowd of 2,112. Prairie View still has some improving to do, but the fact that the Lady Panthers have only lost one set in two weeks speaks numbers to head coach Alicia Pete. “The girls are actually playing well,” Pete said. “We still have a

little ways to go. Their confidence is there too. We just have to keep them focused.” Pete said before the game that TSU was going to bring its Agame. And in the first set the Lady Tigers pushed Prairie View to the brink. TSU came out strong and surprised the Lady Panthers, clawing its way to a 2422 lead. Prairie View refused to give up the set point. Junior middle blocker Christine Ruckman turned things around for the Lady Panthers with a kill and a service

PV VOLLEYBALL TAKES EMOTIONAL WIN VS TSU ace back-to-back to tie the set at 24. Then junior Breanna McNeil and senior Jasmine Houston combined to block an attack and give Prairie View a 25-24 lead. The Lady Tigers got a kill to tie the game at 25, and took a time out. Pete made sure to give her team a talking to. She knew dropping this set was not an option. “I had to give them a little coaching speech,” Pete said. “I'll keep that part confidential, but at the end of the day I told them that they need to go out there and have fun. Because if they don't enjoy the game versus being stressed out there on the court, they won't be able to win.”

It worked. McNeil came out of the timeout and scored on a kill. Then Houston's block won the set for Prairie View 27-25. The Lady Panthers would have no trouble winning their next two sets 25-17 and 25-13. McNeil and senior Maegan

Coleman kept TSU's back row busy, spiking balls at will to combine for 19 kills. McNeil had a team-high nine kills. Prairie View A&M will not play another conference game until Oct. 20 at Grambling State.

NISSAN PATHFINDER CELEBRATES 25 YEARS By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View It seem like only a few years ago that Nissan introduced their Sport Luxury Vehicle called the Pathfinder. But let me tell you that was 25 years ago. The Silver Anniversary edition package is the one we tested. Powered by a proven 4.0 Liter DOHC V6 engine with 266 horsepower and 288 lbs per foot of torque and mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission. This equates to 14 miles per gallon in the city and 20 miles per gallon on the highway. This homegrown Nissan has final assembly point at Smyrna, Tennessee. Our Navy Blue test vehicle came with café latte interior and built with a fully boxed frame of high strength steel. Front and rear independent suspension with front and rear stabilizer bars for a solid well rounded quality ride. Please don’t forget the model we tested was the 4X4 and had a 6,000 pound towing capacity as well. Safety plays a big role in this SUV with four-wheel anti-locking brakes with four-wheel active brake limited slip and electronic brake distribution. This system came with a switchoperated shift-on-the-fly 4 wheel drive system. Don’t let all the toughness fool you because this baby came with 17 inch machine finished allow wheels and BF Goodrich OWL long trail tires. Inside the new pathfinder the driver is met with an eight-way power seat with lumbar adjustment while the front passenger gets a four-way power seat with heated feature as well. The rear seats come 40/20/40 split foldflat and reclining second row, while the third tow seating is 50/50 split fold-flat. All this with leather appointed interior and leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. The steering

wheel has illuminated audio controls.

You know quality sounds are here when you see the Bose audio system with AM/FM 6CD changer with MP3 playback capability and10 speakers including dual subwoofers. This package is also equipped with XM satellite radio and audio input auxiliary jacks. Bluetooth hand-free phone system and cruise control and a seven-inch multi-information color display rounds out the instrument cluster of smooth operation. Other features include power rear lift gate with rear class hatch and certainly power locking doors and windows with front auto up/down feature. Nissan has always been noted for plenty of storage space including the overhead console for such things as sunglasses and the like. The 25th Anniversary edition of the issan Pathfinder SLB 4X4 for 2011 The muscular look is enhanced by fog light body color dual power side mirrors and mesh grille with chrome surround. With body color front and rear door handles and body color side molding and chrome inserts the Nissan has the look of a tough outdoors vehicle yet it’s very practical. In closing please allow me to add the rear privacy glass, roof rails, lower radiator skid plates and running boards and splash guards adds to the outdoor look.

Out and About with John Engel FALLEN HEROES SURVIVORS FOUNDATION Much is being said these days about the heroes that went to war and a lot is being done to make them feel welcome when they return. Even the brave men and women that paid the ultimate price are being brought home to full honors and given the respect that they have earned and deserve. There is another side of this issue that is often ignored; the spouses and children of the heroes that did not survive the war. This is where Mike H. Ladouceur and his wife Sally enter the picture. One year ago this couple decided to start an organization that would fill this need. This is Fallen Heroes Survivors Foundation. Ladouceur’s story goes back a long time and a great distance from home. Mike enlisted in the Army in 1971 and volunteered to go to Viet Nam. He was only 17 at the time. After Basic Training Mike became an Airborne Ranger at the challenge of his Drill Instructor. On his 18th birthday he stepped off the plane in Viet Nam with the same Drill Instructor that issued the challenge. They served together in the Special Forces. A fellow solider in the unit grew up near where Ladouceur did and they became very close. The unit was involved in a fire fight. It was a brutal engagement and the unit lost about 75% of their soldiers. Mike’s friend was hit and died in his arms. His dying request to Mike was to take care of his wife and children. Mike took that promise seriously. They stayed in touch for many years and he worked with them until the kids graduated from college. After the war Mike worked in the satellite technology industry

doing sales, service, and installations in seven states. When he sold the business he moved to the Deep South so his wife Sally could be closer to her family. He later became a Merchant Marine Captain and found himself in the Greater Houston Area. Thomas (Tom) L. Gentry, of Gentry Architects, is one of the members of the Board of Directors and serves on the Executive Directors Advisory Committee as Chairman of Programs. Tom has (at his own admission) a much less dramatic story. Also a Viet Nam Veteran, Gentry was in the Signal Corps. He did not see much combat. One day a few years ago he was home when his next door neighbor’s house burned. The neighbor was Mike H. Ladouceur. Tom and Mike became very close after the fire as Tom helped Mike rebuild. The Foundation was founded when he realized that the families of fallen soldiers had no support after the funeral. According to Ladouceur, when the officers knock on the door to inform the family that their solider will not be returning from combat alive the problems begin. They are informed that the paychecks will stop effective the date of death. The medical benefits and housing allotments also stop. If they are living in military housing they have 30 days to move out. In addition, the Serviceman’s Group Life Insurance policy that most servicemen carry will be paid in about one year. It takes that long to investigate and determine if the death was caused by engagement or was a suicide. This is where the Foundation can help. They can provide a deposit for an apartment if needed or help with an electric bill.

They also provide grief counseling for the entire family. Often forgotten are the children of fallen soldiers. These children are very sucpetable to alcohol and drug abuse. Very often these children are recruited into gangs as they need the support that the Government will not provide. The spouses of these soldiers are often not eligible for Social Security benefits as their partner did not earn enough credits to qualify. Many of these young people entered the service right out of high school or college and never built enough credit to qualify. Other programs available are scholarships, medical, and dental assistance both through the Foundation and from referrals to other organizations that have scholarship monies available. One extremely valuable service offered by the Foundation is the mentoring program for the children of our fallen heroes. These children need to learn how to cope with the loss of their parent and often cannot function well in society without some coaching. Recently Fallen Heroes Survivors Foundation was expanded to include help for families of soldiers that committed suicide due to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). There is very little help for these families and the disorder is often not even recognized. FHSF is incorporated in Nevada as a Non Profit Corporation, and is registered in Texas. They are working to build infrastructure and register in all 50 states. The Foundation is currently working in just two states with registration pending in additional states at the time of this article. Ladouceur is a bit frustrated at how hard it is to get things moving and the amount of time it takes to build support. He is confused that others do not share his patriotic views. One of his goals is to raise awareness of help available to the families of our military men. On October 1, FHSF will host a

fund raiser at the American Legion Hall in Thompsons, Texas (Richmond American Legion Post 567). In order to make the event affordable, they will not be charging admission. There will be a live band, $7.00 BBQ plates raffles, and auctions. In addition to FHSF, there will be representatives of the Disabled American Veterans, the Travelling Memorial Wall of the Texas Fallen Heroes, and a woman’s shelter. A large number of veteran related organizations have expressed interest and have been invited. This will be a family event with face painting for the kids, a moon walk, snow cones, and other activities. Another approach to fund raising is a pledge drive. The Foundation is requesting a yearly donation of $24.00. This is done through FHSF’s web site. The concept is that almost everyone can afford $2.00 a

Page 8

month (which is $ 24.00 a year), and if enough people agree to donate the funds, then there will be enough monies available to help many spouses and dependent children immediately. The motto of the Army Rangers is to never leave a fallen comrade behind. As a former Ranger, Mike’s motto is to that he is an American helping Americans so No Family is Left Behind. Please join him so it becomes Americans Helping Americans so No One is Left Behind. . If you want more information about FHSF you can reach them on line at http://www.fallenheroessurvivorsfoundation.com/. WHAT IS TRUTH: “SANCTIFY THEM THROUGH THY TRUTH: THY WORD IS TRUTH.” He That Is A Hireling (John 10:12)

property and resources, destitution.

The apostles were also Ministers and Elders; and there were other believing brethren that continued in the apostles’ doctrine, that were SUPPORTED not only financially, but were supplied with food, clothing, shelter, etc. as they were EEDY. Today’s members, “the lower class saints” supply the financial WA TS, not the needs of ministers and others that receive these salaries. But when the members are needy, they are taught how to manage their monies and are supplied from the food pantry. Are today’s ministers and other “upper class saints” that receive this pay, above being supplied from the food pantry? Just maybe if they had an occupation like the Apostle Paul, a salary from the Church would not be necessary; if they managed their own monies well: unless of course it would be for covetousness. Are they beyond learning how to manage their monies? Usually those that receive this pay, live better than those that supply them. This is out of order [disorderly] according to 2Cor. the 8th chapter, verses 1115; this is why the terms “lower and upper class saints” were used. What happened to EQUALITY? Let us read what the Apostle Paul had to say about EQUALITY; “2 Cor 8:11 Now therefore perform the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to will, so there may be a performance also out of that which ye have.12 For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.13 For I mean not that other men be (1)eased, and ye (2)burdened:14 But by an (3)equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their (4)want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want: that there may be equality:15 As it is written, He that had gathered much had nothing over; and he that had gathered little had no lack.”(KJV)

Take the salaries out, and see how many “MINISTERS” are left standing in the pulpits! Take away the money; the so-called “care of the souls” goes out the window because THE HIRELI G FLEETH. You know, the only way one can prove that he is not a “HIRELI G” (preaching for money), is that he doesn’t take any, unless he is EEDY. Then they that are in need according to New Testament scripture, are to be supported in the same manner the apostle Paul and others were; because they did not PREACH FOR A LIVING and neither did Christ for that matter, as is done today. They did the work of an evangelist (2Tim.4:1-5), without charge, for a heavenly reward (1Cor.9:14-18; 2Tim.4:6-8). They LIVED TO PREACH the gospel, their lifestyle was preaching the gospel for the SAVING of SOULS. Today’s lifestyle is preaching for the SAVINGS in their BANK ACCOUNTS. According to the apostles’ doctrine, the apostles were not on SALARIES whether they were in need or not. They lived a low and humble life (1Cor. 4:9-17; 2Cor.6:410; 2Cor.10:1-18; 11:7-9; 12:511). They were instructed both to be full and to be hungry. Contrary to what is practiced today, their concerns were for the SPIRITUAL and FINANCIAL NEEDS of THE FLOCK. The Church that Christ is building, (Matt.16:18-19; Acts 2:47; 20:28; Eph.3:9-21; 5:25-27&32; Col.1:12-20), cannot only follow the examples of being full and abounding. The Church must also follow the examples of being abased, hungry and suffering needs; thereby having afflictions, if we are to be followers of Paul as he was of Christ (1Cor.11:1-3). This would truly cause us to love our lives less in this world. Please read:

Acts 20:32 And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified. 33 I have coveted no man’s silver, or gold, or apparel. 34 Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me. 35 I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. 1 Cor 4:11 Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwellingplace; 12 And labour, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it: 13 Being defamed, we intreat: we are made as the filth of the world, and are the offscouring of all things unto this day. 14 I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you. 15 For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. 16 Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me.(KJV) 1 Cor 9:6 Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working? 1 Cor 9:11 If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things? 12 If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? evertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ. (KJV) 1 Cor 9:14 Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel. 15 But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be so done unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make my glorying void.16 For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel! 17 For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me. 18 What is my (1)reward then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel

of Christ (2)without charge, that I (3)abuse not my power in the gospel.19 For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more. Definitions: (1)reward-3408 misthos (mis-thos’); apparently a primary word; pay for services (literally or figuratively), good or bad: KJV— hire, reward, wages.1) dues paid for work, wages, hire (2)Without charge77 adapanos ; from 1 (as negative particle); and 1160; costless, i.e. gratuitous: KJV— without expense, requiring no outlay, costing nothing: KJV— cost. (3)Abuse not-2710 katachraomai; from 2596 and 5530; to overuse, i.e. misuse: KJV— abuse. 2 Cor 11:6 But though I be rude in speech, yet not in knowledge; but we have been throughly made manifest among you in all things.7 Have I committed an offence in (1)abasing myself that ye might be exalted, because I have preached to you the gospel of God (2)freely? 8 I robbed other churches, taking (3)wages of them, to do you (4)service. 9 And when I was present with you, and (5)wanted, I was chargeable to no man: for that which was lacking to me the brethren which came from Macedonia supplied: and in all things I have kept myself from being burdensome unto you, and so will I keep myself. (KJV) Definitions: (1)Abasing myself5013 tapeinoo-to make low, to bring low b) metaphorically, to bring into a humble condition, to reduce to lower circumstances 2) to abase 3) to be ranked below others who are honored or rewarded 4) to humble or to abase myself by humble living c) 4) devoid of all haughtiness (2)Freely-1432 dorean (do-rehan’); gratuitously (literally or figuratively): KJV— without a cause, freely, for naught. (3)Wages of them-3800 opsonion-1) a soldier’s pay, an allowance; that part of the soldier’s support given in place of pay (that is, rations) and the money in which he is paid (4) to do you Service-1248 diakonia (dee-ak-on-ee’-ah); from 1249; attendance (as a servant, etc.); figuratively (eleemosynary) aid, (official) service (especially of the Christian teacher, of the diaconate): KJV— (ad-) minister (-ing, -tration, -try), office, relief, service (-ing). (5)Wanted-5302 hustereo (hoos-ter-eh’-o); from 5306; to be later, i.e. (by implication) to be inferior; generally, to fall short (be deficient): KJV— come behind (short), be destitute, fail, lack, suffer need, (be in) want, be the worse.

Phil 4:12 I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.14 Notwithstanding ye have well done, that ye did communicate with my affliction.” Even though the Church is instructed to support the needy saints, the apostles and believing brethren before us did not abandon the flock “congregations” because of the lack of financial support or any other hardship, as is done in the religious world today. They suffered needs! This is because they were not “HIRELI GS” and cared for the souls of the flock (2Cor.12:14-15; 1Thes.2:8). The apostles and believing brethren before us did not approach congregations with resumes to determine their pay, as it is done in the religious world today; because they were not “HIRELI GS”. There are those in the religious world today moving from one congregation to another, until the “money is right”. There are those today with family incomes that are sufficient not only for their needs, but for their wants also; yet they take money from the Church, just because they are “preaching”. Finally, there are those today that take money for anniversaries, birthdays, vacations, song leading, secretaries, etc. There are no examples by the apostles and believing brethren before us, of these prestated practices “traditions” because, they were not “HIRELI GS”. Some might say “we don’t do that here”. We must remember according to scripture that if we fellowship in any manner, those that are partakers of any unscriptural practices “traditions”, we are then partakers of their evil deeds (Gal.6:7-9; Eph.5:1-11; 2Thes.3:6-9; 2John1:9-11). The scriptures are clear on what the Church of and by Christ (Rom.16:16-18; Eph. 3:21), is to continue steadfast in and that is the apostles’ doctrine (Acts 2:41-42). The traditions, examples, and commands for the Church that Christ is building (Matt. 16:18; Acts 2:41&47) are also found in the apostles’ doctrine, and they are clear, and must be followed circumspectly (Eph.5:13-17), to be right (righteous) with God through Christ Jesus, and his apostles. (John17:17-21; Acts 1:1-2; Philp.3:16-20; Col.2:6-10; 1Thes.1:5-6; 2Thes.2:10-17; 3:6-7; 2Pet.3:1-3)

WHAT IS TRUTH: “SANCTIFY THEM THROUGH THY TRUTH: THY WORD IS TRUTH.” John 10:7 Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. 9 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. 10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. 12 But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.13The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.14 I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.15 As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. John 10:12 But he that is an (1)hireling, and not the (2)shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the (3)wolf coming, and (4)leaveth the sheep, and (5)fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.(KJV) Definitions: (1) Hireling-3411 misthotos (mis-tho-tos’); from 3409; a wage-worker: KJV— hired servant, hireling; 3409 misthoo; from 3408; to let out for wages, i.e. (middle voice) to hire: KJV— hire. (2) Shepherd-4166 poimen (poy-mane’); a shepherd (literally or figuratively): KJV— shepherd, pastor. (3) Wolf-3074 lukos; 1) a wolf 2), used of cruel, greedy, rapacious, destructive men (4) Leaveth-863 aphiemi (af-ee’ay-mee); from 575 to send forth, in various applications (as follow): KJV— cry, forgive, forsake, lay aside, leave, omit, put (send) away, remit, suffer, yield up. (5) Fleeth-5343 pheugo (fyoo’-go); apparently a primary verb; to run away (literally or figuratively); by implication, to shun; by analogy, to vanish: KJV— escape, flee (away). According to the apostle Peter we are to be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of the apostles of the Lord (2Pet. 3:2) John 10:12 ... he that is an hireling: Eccl 5:10 He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver;

nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.11 When goods increase, they are increased that eat them: and what good is there to the owners thereof, saving the beholding of them with their eyes? > (please read 1John2:15-17) (KJV) Isa 56:9 All ye beasts of the field, come to devour, yea, all ye beasts in the forest. 10 His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber. 11 Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his gain, from his quarter. Ezek 34:1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 2 Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD unto the shepherds; Woe be to the shepherds of Israel that do feed themselves! should not the shepherds feed the flocks? 3 Ye eat the fat, and ye clothe you with the wool, ye kill them that are fed: but ye feed not the flock. 4 The diseased have ye not strengthened, neither have ye healed that which was sick, neither have ye bound up that which was broken, neither have ye brought again that which was driven away, neither have ye sought that which was lost; but with force and with cruelty have ye ruled them. 5 And they were scattered, because there is no shepherd: and they became meat to all the beasts of the field, when they were scattered. 6 My sheep wandered through all the mountains, and upon every high hill: yea, my flock was scattered upon all the face of the earth, and none did search or seek after them. 7 Therefore, ye shepherds, hear the word of the LORD; 8 As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely because my flock became a prey, and my flock became meat to every beast of the field, because there was no shepherd, neither did my shepherds search for my flock, but the shepherds fed themselves, and fed not my flock; 9 Therefore, O ye shepherds, hear the word of the LORD; 10 Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against the shepherds; and I will require my flock at their hand, and cause them to cease from feeding the flock; neither shall the shepherds feed themselves any more; for I will deliver my flock from their mouth, that they may not be meat for them. 11 For thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek

them out.(KJV) Let’s be honest with ourselves Col.3:9-10; Rev.21:8, who do you know that truly fits the scriptural office of a bishop/elder or deacon? If those in these positions are not following the scriptural commands and examples of this office, then they are out of order and are disqualified for the office according to the apostles’ doctrine. They must also be withdrawn from (2Thes. 3:6-7), if they continue to hold their positions. Now let’s read the scriptural blueprint if you will, for these offices: 1 Tim 3:1 This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. 2 A bishop then must be (1)blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; 3 Not given to wine, (2)no striker, (3) not greedy of filthy lucre; but (4)patient, (5)not a brawler, (6)not covetous; Definitions: (1)blameless-423 anepileptos-1) not apprehended, that cannot be laid hold of, not open to censure, irreproachable; cannot be reprehensible 1. (adj.) cannot Cause shame or disgrace. (2)no striker-4131 plektes (plake’-tace); from 4141; a smiter, i.e. (quarrelsome person): KJV— striker.1) bruiser, ready for a blow contentious (3)not greedy-146 aischrokerdes-eager for base gain, greedy for money (4)patient1933 epieikes (ep-ee-ikace’);from 1909 and 1503; appropriate, i.e. (by implication) mild: 1) seemingly, suitable 2) equitable, KJV— gentle, moderation, patient. (5)not a brawler269 amachos (am’-akh-os);from 1 (as a negative particle) and 3163; peaceable: KJV— not a brawler.2) not contentious 3) abstaining from fighting (6)not covetous-866 aphilarguros (afil-ar’-goo-ros); from 1 (as a negative particle) and 5366; unavaricious: KJV— without covetousness, not greedy of filthy lucre, not loving money. 1 Tim 3:4 One that (7)ruleth (8)well his own house, having his children (9)in subjection with all (10)gravity; Definitions: (7)One that ruleth4291 proistemi (pro-is’-taymee); from 4253 and 2476; to stand before, i.e. (in rank) to preside, or (by implication): KJV— maintain, be over, rule, to set or to place before, a) to set over, b) to be over, to superintend, to preside over, c) to be a protector or guardian (to give aid), d) to care for, to give atten-

tion to profess honest occupations. (8) his own house well 2573 kalos (kal-oce’);adverb from 2570; well (usually morally): KJV— (in a) good (place), honestly, (full) well, excellently, well a) rightly, so that there shall be no room for blame, well, truly b) excellently, nobly, commendably c) honorably, in honor; (9) having his children in subjection-5292 hupotage (hoop-ot-ag-ay’); from 5293; subordination: KJV—subjection, 2) obedience, 5293 hupotasso (hoop-ot-as’-so);to subordinate; reflexively, to obey: KJV— be under obedience (obedient), (be, make) subject (10) with all gravity-4587 semnotes-1) the characteristic of a thing or person which entitles to reverence and respect, dignity, majesty, sanctity 2) honor, purity 1 Tim 3:5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) 6 Not a (11)novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. 8 Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; 9 Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. 10 And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. 11 Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. 12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 13 For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.(KJV) Definition: Not a (11)novice3504 neophutos (neh-of’-ootos); from 3501 and a derivative of 5453; newly planted, i.e. (figuratively) a young convert (“neophyte”): KJV— novice. 1 Tim 5:17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. 18 For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not (1)muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward. Food for thought: Deut 24:14 Thou shalt not oppress an hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he be of thy brethren, or of thy strangers that are in thy land within thy gates: 15 At his day thou shalt give him his hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and setteth his heart upon

it: lest he cry against thee unto the LORD, and it be sin unto thee.(see also Titus 1:5-9) Definition:(1)muzzle 5392 phimoo (fee-mo’-o);from phimos (a muzzle); to muzzle: KJV— muzzle.1) to close the mouth with a muzzle 2) metaphorically: a) to stop the mouth, to make speechless, to reduce to silence b) to become speechless 1 Pet 5:1 The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: 2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; 3 Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock. 4 And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away. 5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.(KJV) Now again, after reading the above scriptures, HONESTLY, who do you know fits the scriptural qualifications, for the office of a bishop / elder or deacon? John 10:12 ... the wolf coming, (KJV) Matt 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. 15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are (1)ravening (2)wolves. 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Definitions:(1)ravening-727 harpax-1) rapacious, ravenous 2) an extortioner, a robber (2)wolves-3074 lukos-1) a wolf 2) metaphorically, used of cruel, greedy, rapacious, destructive men Acts 20:27 For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God. 28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. 29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.

WHAT IS TRUTH: “SANCTIFY THEM THROUGH THY TRUTH: THY WORD IS TRUTH.” 30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. 31 Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears. 2 Tim 4:1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; 2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 3 For the time will come when they will not (1)endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. 5 But watch thou in all things, (2)endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.(KJV) Definitions:(1) will not endure sound doctrine 430 anechomai (an-ekh’-om-ahee); middle voice from 303 and 2192; to hold oneself up against, i.e. (figuratively) put up with, 2) to hold oneself erect and firm 3) to sustain, to bear: KJV— bear with, to endure, forbear, suffer. (2)endure afflictions-2553 kakopatheo; from the same as 2552; to undergo hardship: KJV— be afflicted, endure afflictions (hardness), suffer trouble.1) to suffer (or endure) evils, troubles) John 10:13 ... careth not for the sheep. (KJV) Phil 2:19 But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state. 20 For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state. 21 For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ’s.(KJV) 1 Tim 6:3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; 4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, 5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and (1)destitute of the truth, (2)supposing that (3)gain is godliness: from such (4)withdraw thyself. 6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8 And having food and raiment let us

be therewith content. 9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. Definitions: (1)Destitute of the truth -650 apostereo (ap-os-tereh’-o); from 575 and stereo (to deprive); to despoil: KJV— defraud, destitute, kept back by fraud. (2)supposing that -3543 nomizo-1)hold by custom or usage, to own as a custom or usage, to follow a custom or usage; it is the custom, it is the received usage 2) to deem, to think,to suppose (3)gain is godliness -4200 porismos; from a derivative of poros (a way, i.e. means); furnishing (procuring), i.e. (by implication) money-getting (acquisition): KJV source of gain (4) from such withdraw thyself868 aphistemi (af-is’-tay-mee); frm 575 and 2476; to remove, i.e. (actively) instigate to revolt; usually (reflexively) to desist, desert, etc.KJV— depart, draw (fall) away, refrain.a) to go away, to depart from anyone b) to desert, to withdraw from one d) to shun, to flee from g) to keep oneself from, to absent oneself from 2 Pet 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many shall follow their (1)pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. 3 And through (2)covetousness shall they with(3)feigned words make (4)merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.(KJV) Definitions: (1)pernicious ways-766 aselgeia (as-elg’-i-a); licentiousness (sometimes including other vices):KJV filthy, lasciviousness, unbridled lust, excess, wantonness, outrageousness, shamelessness, insolence.li·cen·tious (lº-sµn“sh…s) adj. 1. Lacking moral discipline or ignoring legal restraint, especially in sexual conduct. (2)

covetousness-4124 pleonexia (pleh-on-ex-ee’-ah); from 4123; avarice, i.e. (by implication) fraudulency, extortion: KJV— covetous (-ness) practices, greediness.greedy desire to have more, covetousness, avarice (3) feigned words-4112 plastos (plas-tos’); from 4111; moulded, i.e. (by implication) artificial or (figuratively) fictitious (false): KJV— feigned. (4) make merchandise of you -1710 emporeuomai (em-por-yoo’-omahee); i.e. (by implication) to trade: KJV— buy and sell, make merchandise. 4) to use a person or a thing for gain Now concerning the collection for the Saints (1Cor.16:1). The collection is for the support of all EEDY Saints, according to the rules of the APOSTLES’ doctrine; including EEDY ministers and elders, not of covetousness. There seems to be no misunderstanding with verse 2 of 1Cor.16, in that it is done on the first day of the week, but the understanding seems to fail with verse 1, (the collection for the saints). The Apostle Paul, one that is our example (1Cor.11:13), practiced what he preached, because he preached, without charge, so that the gospel would not be hindered (1Cor.9:12). Paul, one of the apostles that the Church MUST follow, worked with his hands. In other words, he had a craft, an occupation (tentmaker) Acts18:3, so that he would not be chargeable to any of them. According to scripture it was not because they the apostles had not the power, but to be an example for us to follow them. Paul continued to teach by command that if any would not work, neither should he eat (Acts 20:32-35; Eph.4:28; 1Thes.2:9; 2Thes.3:7-15). But in the religious world today, there are those two or three that are guaranteed a check, whether they are needy or not, some not working at all. Again there are no commands, and or examples for salaried preachers, given in the apostles’ doctrine, to the Church that Christ is building. Many, we believe, misunderstand “muzzle not the ox” 1Cor.9:9-18; 1Tim.5:17-18. We must remember that as long as the ox is muzzled it CA OT EAT, and if it cannot eat it CA OT WORK. Likewise, neither should one be kept from teaching or preaching the WORD, or living for that matter, because of the lack of support if NEEDED (note the muzzle definition: (1)muzzle not-5392 phimoo (fee-mo’-o);from phimos (a muzzle); to muzzle: KJV— muzzle.1) to close the mouth with a muzzle, to muzzle 2)

metaphorically: a) to stop the mouth, to make speechless, to reduce to silence b) to become speechless ). This is not the case today. There are those professing to be “Religious Leaders”, living well and are able to go anywhere they want to, even on vacations with their own salaries. This being true, surely they can go and PREACH THE WORD without having to rob God [covetousness]. We believe according to scripture we should get a job and go to work, to take care of our own needs, as well as the needs of others. Please read: “1Thes 4:11 And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; 12 That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing”. Remember, a working ox will only eat what it needs to sustain. It is a shame to say that the ox understands more about “ EED”, than we do. If we are to follow Paul and the other apostles, as they followed Christ, we MUST follow the examples and or commands for the support of EEDY ministers, elders, and members (saints), or we will be [disorderly]. Acts 18:1 After these things Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth; 2 And found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla; (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them. 3 And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers. (KJV) 1 Cor 11:1 Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ. 2 Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you. 3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.(KJV) 1 Cor 16:1 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. 2 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come. 3 And when I come, whomsoever ye shall approve by your letters, them will I send to bring your liberality unto Jerusalem. (KJV) Eph 4:28 Let him that stole

steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. 1Thes 2:8 So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us. 9 For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be (1)chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God. HAWKINS FAMILY KEEPING THE NAME OF T.J. HAWKINS ALIVE By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Bastrop, Louisiana-It’s been more than a decade since T. J. Hawkins passed away, but a year never goes by with the Hawkins family honoring the late gospel great. For more than 55 year T. J. Hawkins sang gospel songs right up there with the best, such as the late Harvey Watkins Sr. and the late Rev, F. C. Barnes and many other Gospel greats. Mrs. Bessie Mae Hawkins sees to it her children and their children and their children get together and sing and praise God in honor of this great singer. We grew up in Mer Rouge, Louisiana living right beside the Hawkins family. We sure miss the good singing T. J. Hawkins had to offer. So every year on the Sunday before Labor Day, the Hawkins family get together and sing their hearts out at Greater First Church of God in Christ.

BIG BIRTHDAY BASH AT M.A.C. LABOR DAY WEEKEND By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Bastrop, Louisiana-Thanks to a big Birthday Bash for entertainer Ricky White we had a chance to see a couple of performers who we have strong ties to. We made our way over the all-new Morehouse Activity Center just off highway 165. Following behind PPW of Magic 97 KJMG-FM from Monroe was the master of ceremonies for the event. The opening act happens to have been Kimberly Adams and up and coming soul singer sister from the well known Winston family. Fact is my brother Charlie Winston and I were going out on the town when we learned the daughter of our first cousin; (the late Ollie Mae Winston) was performing. We got there in time to see her act and found her to be very impressive to say the least. Kim has a song called “If He ain’t got it like that” it has a Denise LaSalle type flavor and Kim has outstanding voice much like her late aunt Viola Winston who was a solo singing mainstay at St.

Matthew Missionary Baptist Church during the 60s in Mer Rouge, Louisiana. We are looking forward to working with Kim in the near future one some the events we are involved with. The other pleasant surprise was getting a chance to see Earl Duke perform after all these years. I recall being in the tenth grade when we use to stand outside the Bastrop night clubs to hear him sing and to hopefully get glimpses of him going in and out of the club before his show. Earl and I talked the other day and I’m sure our path will be crossing again very soon. Over the years he has put some good quality product on the market and is still working hard on a new project as well.

In the coming months we hope to get back to Bastrop and work on some projects with Kim and Earl and others who are in the entertainment field.

We were actually in town to visit with family members and to share in the Winston Family reunion with the main focus on the late Sister Francis Prather. Soul-Blues legend Ernie Johnson was there with us as he came home to visit his family over in Winnsboro, Louisiana. It just so happen Earl Duke and Ernie Johnson use to sing and

THE 2011 WINSTON FAMILY REUNION By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Monroe, Louisiana-Thanks to the efforts of Emma Williams, Loretha Winston-Hill and Carolyn Rena Harris members of the family of the late Francis Winston-Prather are getting together each year. Some 11 years ago these three people put their heads together and held a small gathering and it has grown over the years. Francis WinstonPrather was the youngest of 14 children born to the late Mary Seay-Winston and Minnus Winston. Sister Prather as many called her over the years due to her work as a true Missionary Baptist from Jerusalem Baptist Church in Mer Rouge Louisiana had 12 children of her own and 8 are still alive and well while 4 preceded her in death. As best known Sister Prather has 32 grand children, 49 great grand children and 50 great great

grand children. Her immediate family includes Irene Gilliland of Evansville Indiana, James Craig, George Robinson, John Willie (Preacher) Prather and Loretha Winston-Hill of Bastrop, Charlie Winston and Arthur Lee Prather of Houston, Texas and Emma Williams of Monroe, Louisiana. Those who have gone on to glory land are Mary Craig, Jessie Craig Jr. Orene Craig, and Jimmie Wilson. But the legacy of Francis Prather will live forever in her children and her untiring work in the Church is the subject on a column we will detail her life’s story in the next edition of A King-size View. While visiting at the reunion we came face to face with the member of the Winston Family who has the longest tenure on Earth at this present date. Our first cousin Willie Mae Neal who you

can’t tell it by looking at her photos will turn 88 years of age in October. It is Cousin Willie Mae who fills us in on the family tree and we certainly enjoyed her company. Let us not forget she is the daughter of Lillar Winston-Smith who was the oldest of the 14 Winston children while our mother Sister Francis was the youngest. Thanks to Cousin Willie Mae some of the younger members can find out information about the family. A much bigger reunion is planned for Labor Day weekend in 2012 as we try to track down some more members of the Winston family to join in the celebration.

Keeping up with your family is always a good thing so reading A King-Size View will help bring the Winston family together again? Fact is those in other parts of the country can visit www.kingsizeview.com and learn more about the family as we lead up the big get together in 2012.

Harris granddaughter Avriel at less than two years old. This would make Avriel the great great granddaughter of Sister Prather and the great great great grand daughter of the late Mary Seay and Minnus Winston.

We could never thank Emma and her husband L.A. Williams enough for hosting the dinner for many years at their home in Monroe, Louisiana. So we know it would be fit and proper to have the dinner at the community center and open it up to all Winston family members. For more information, call Carolyn Rena Harris at 318-282-7352 or email at carolynharris35@yahoo.com.

LONE STAR IDOL FIRST SHOW TURNS OUT GREAT

By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Dallas, Texas-The first annual Lone Star Idol show turned out to be a great evening. On Sunday September 18th, at the historic Granada Theater on Greenville Avenue, it was rocking with the fresh new sounds of many artists. Thanks to Marie Ornelas-Thompson and Darnell Smith we were happy to be involved with the contest. It was an excellent opportunity to meet some of the up and coming talents and also see some VIP performers who came to lend a hand to the new stars to be. Legendary Ernie Johnson came along and performed the title cut from his latest CD “I’m the one you need”. Johnson said after the event he certainly enjoyed the company of so many talented young people and the way they enjoyed being in his presence really warmed his heart.

As far as the contest went, clearly Jason Ashley won for his country and western song and Taylor Heard came in at a close second with her guitar and smooth sounding voice as well. Third place went to Crystal Cameron who had a good sounding group.

But it didn’t stop there as many other groups and acts took to the stage to show what they had before a live MTV audience. The VIP performers started out with Harpist Kristen Smith of Austin and let me tell you this girl can play. Then the smooth soulful sounds of Kera Noon known as Neutral Sister and her song ‘Together’ really got the crowd into a grove. The first act was Crystal Cameron who placed third with her song ‘Color My Life’. It was time for 11 year old Jade Nickol Hudson and the night was well underway. James Moradoll came up and did a medley of songs much to the delight of the crowd on hand.

One of the most interesting acts had to be Jokie Williams as she had her entire family on the stage. Her husband played bass while her daughter played drums and she played guitar and the other daughter played and sang as well. Back to the VIP performers as Stephen Pride the brother of the great Charley Pride singing a song called ‘You gave me a reason (to love only you)’. He also went on to sing a song called

“Perfect Picture”. It was certainly good to visit with Stephen Pride.

Sionely Psmoreno did a version of a song called ‘Baby do you mind’. A Spanish up tempo song got the crowd rolling again. Bella Nae sang the song called ‘Gimme’ which had a special ring to it and the host had to ask her about that one when she finished. By that time Dominic Bonsignmore AKA ‘Harmini’ did his rap song ‘Make you Proud of Me’; he dedicated it to his late mother and really got the feeling from the crowd. Hannelore Ester did an instrumental track without background vocals and kept the show going. Alyssa Martin had a somewhat smooth delivery to her sound came up next. Und J and Pinky did their thing next and took the show into the next break. Later on in the night E Mazin, a gospel rap act, took to the stage and got the audience going again.

next with his love songs as the Barbara Jordan graduate brought the house together with his words.

Darius Connor had his son Holy is the Lord gathered a lot of support from the audience. Duval Ave Maria was up next as the night continues and the acts just kept on coming. Petite Talent two little girls really got into a quality dance routine and many thought they would have finished at the top. Steven McClerkin sang a love song with his background and later said meeting Ernie Johnson made his night. One of the greatest performers of the competition was Taylor Heard, a smooth, classic looking, country girl who can play the guitar as well as sing. Heard finished second and told the audience she truly enjoyed the contest. She added she was raised playing the piano and starting playing the guitar at 12 years old.

called ‘King’ and brought some of the crowd to their feet. Then Jason Ashley won the stage over with his performance and had nearly a perfect score on all cards to win the contest. He too had a special feeling for listening to Ernie Johnson and who knows the two might actually hook up and do a duet. JaQuan Jones was up next and his version of ‘Dummy’ closed out the show of contests. While we were waiting on the votes to be counted Jose Luis Davila took the stage and did some Salerol and he did the Salsa and captivated the audience one more time. We made the trip to Dallas and back on the same day. Photographer Andre Odums and I got back to Houston around 2:15 am, but it was well worth it.

Ronyea Conner did his song

Gillian DeVout was up next and she had a very good voice and the audience liked what they heard from her. Chauncey Jones did his act with Disalvatore next. Another of my favorites was Sierra Dawn with another ‘Because of You’ a Kelly Clarkson song. The kid held her own and later admitted she was a bit nervous from the start. E J with Marie and son PJ

Official Watson came up next and rocked the house as one of the VIP performers on the show.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK TAYLOR HERBERT-WHEATLEY By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View The Wheatley Wildcats put up a real good fight in their 18-16 loss to the Jack Yates Lions the other night. One junior student sure was pulling very hard for her Wildcats. The well-rounded Taylor Herbert is the lovely and talented daughter of Monica and Joseph Herbert while holding a 3.7 grade point average and likes Math best. She is excited by the fact the answers are always right or wrong and there is no in between. On Sundays you’ll find the Herbert family down at Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church where Taylor sings in the choir. “Yes sir I love singing and praising the Lord because I understand it’s God that has

made me in the first place”. Getting a good feeling each time she is in the choir has been a big part of Taylor’s life and she says she would not change a single thing if she could live over again. “I understand what the Lord has in store for me and all I have to do is serve him and I’ll get my blessings”. Already sure she wants to become a nurse, Taylor says she is currently in the nursing program at Wheatley and it’s a good start. “Actually I won’t have to take pre-med because I’m already in advance courses and at this pace I shall become a RN by the time I’m twenty years of age”. With a love for caring and having a special feeling in her heart for all mankind, Taylor feels being a nurse will give her a chance to live out her dreams.

Watching carefully at Barrack Obama becoming the first African American President in the history of the United States of America has a special meaning for Taylor. “As I watched I truly didn’t think he would actually win, but I’m truly glad he did”. When asked what kind of job the President is doing as it relates the economy, Taylor had an interesting answer. “Oh I think the President is doing a fine job when you consider the circumstance in which he is dealing with”. She went on to say she don’t just flat out blame former President George Bush, but added many of the problems Obama faces were brought on by the policies of President Bush. On the subject of school spirit at Wheatley High School these days, Taylor gives the Wildcats an 8 on a scale of 0-10. “I really believe we could be a 10 if we had more alumni participation, like my mom use to cheer for Wheatley and she came out to help us”. Considering her parents as her most driving force in life, Taylor says they have made it very clear they want the best for her

Describing herself as kind, intelIn closing please allow me to ligent, beautiful and talented, add it was a joy talking with Taylor says she joined the Taylor who carefully listened to Wheatley cheerleaders in her our question and gave good sophomore year. “Our sponsor (Shanna Thomas) is very profes- quality answers. We know she sional and she runs a tight ship will make a very fine nurse and so we stay in line with what she the sick people under her care wants us to do”. She went on to will be in good hands!

TALKING WITH FORMER ALL-PRO RODNEY HAMPTON By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View It seems like only yesterday when Rodney Craig Hampton had gotten his knee scoped before the start of his senior year. It was then he developed a little check of his knee pad after every rushing play. For those who don’t know Hampton averaged 11 yards per carry throughout his career at Kashmere High School. In his senior year he opened the season at Butler against the Madison Marlins and had 195 yards and three touchdowns and the rest is history. Hampton went on to Georgia and had a better than seven yard per carry average before becoming first round draft choice of the New York Giants. For nine seasons he carried the load and left the Giants as their all-time leading rusher. Even though Tiki Barber later would pass Hampton, he’s still working with the Giants organization as an ambassador. We visited with Hampton as the Rams invited some of their former player out to their game with Booker T. Washington at Delmar. It was great to visit with Rodney and find out what he’s doing these days and talk a

little football with him. The first question was how important it was to reestablish the player’s agreement with the National Football League. “I think it was very important King. The lockout is over and the benefits for older guys are getting a better deal out of it but there are people who are still unhappy with the agreement”. Hampton went on to say having a few dollars saved is the key to the career. “Today’s players make a lot of money and they spend a lot of money also, and some of their problems come from making bad investments”. As we talked more with Hampton he stated a lot of guys sign power of attorneys and before you know it they are broke”. Hampton who also averaged nearly five yards a carry in the NFL went on to say he put himself on a salary and was never a big spender so it worked out for him. “Living within your means is a big key and while working with the Giants I see guys with five and six cars and they can only drive one at a time”. He tried to pull guys aside and let them know they need to put some of those big dollars back for a rainy day.

“Keep in mind in pro football you are only a play away from being out of the league, tomorrow is not promised”. Having good parents and good friends was a plus for Hampton and he considers himself blessed to have gotten through it all. “Hey when I first went to New York someone could have taken me quick and fast but I was blessed by God and a good family and friends like Jarrett Scales of Triple J Barbeque on Homestead and we’re still hanging together.

a 9th grader and Scales and I were talking and we said we were glad to see him graduate, then we found he was only a sophomore”. Hampton went on to say the late Johnnie Bailey was the greatest he’s ever seen and said he is going to miss him a great deal.

Talking about the scoreboard and a good field turf, Hampton added he feels good seeing things getting better for the HISD. In closing he thanked us for the work we’ve been doing covering the kids for what is closing in on 30 years now!

Now days Rodney spends time with A Better Bail bond his father’s 23 year old business, and working with the Giants as an ambassador and has an after school program for kids’ fitness called Hamps’ Camp at (Garden Oaks, Roberts Elementary and Houston Gardens). “I’m really having a blast doing that because I love working with the kids”. Coming along the time when Johnnie Bailey was at Yates, Rodney had the most respect for Bailey and his skills. “Houston has had a great deal of athletes come from the area and I saw Johnnie Bailey play when I was

THIS WEEK IN HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View The Kashmere Rams jumped on the Booker T. Washington Eagles and never looked back. After a good kickoff return Robert Jenkins got behind the Eagles for a 30 yard strike from Anthony Wiltz. The Rams got a P.A.T. from Albert Davis and it was quickly 7-0. Nearly four minute later the Rams struck again as Wiltz found DeAndre Land from 44 yards out and Davis booted the P.A.T. and it was 14-0. Then with only 14 second gone in the special Wiltz found Jenkins again from 32 yards out and once again Davis booted the P.A.T. through, yes making it 21-0.

Three minutes later John Gibbs found Chris Jackson from 18 yards away and the Eagles got on the board and trailed 21-7. But as the clock ran out in the second period Wiltz ran around right end for a five yard score and the P.A.T. failed, but the Rams led it 27-7 at the half. It was more of the same in the second half as Wiltz ran one yard for a score in the third to put it out of reach at 33-7 after the pass failed on the two point try. The Eagles would ads a 28 yard field goal by Alejandro Arambula to end the scoring for the night. We spoke with Robert Jenkins who had four catches for 67 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Rams receivers. “Yes Washington kept trying to jam me on the line and I kept getting away from them and ran my route and Anthony hit me with the ball- touchdown”. Jenkins kept getting behind the Eagles and making them pay all night long. “Like I said they kept jamming me and if you try that with me I’m going to get away and

beat you deep and that’s what happened”.

In closing Jenkins added he feels Anthony Wiltz is very poised in the pocket and does a good job of finding the open receiver. Darius Mitchell had some key runs down the stretch in the fourth period as the Rams rushed for 115 yards as a team on 28 carries. On the defensive side of the ball the Rams held the Eagles to only 40 yards rushing on 28 attempts and that was the key. Thanks to Joseph Jackson, Grant Ross and the rest of the Rams defense kept the Eagles in check all night long. The Jack Yates Lions had plenty to cheer about as they ran past Jeff Davis 49-7 for their second win of the season. Arthur Lockett ran for 157 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries as Joshua Simmons ran for one score as passed for another in the Lions win. COACH OF THE WEEK-GARRY DUNHAM-KASHMERE By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View While watching the KashmereWashington football game at Delmar, it was tough seeing coach Kirby Jones in the press box as he wanted to cheer for Washington because that is where he finished high school from and he also coached with the Eagles, but he spent the last few years of his coaching career as the head football coach at Kashmere where Garry Dunham was on his staff. But coach Dunham made it easy for coach Jones as his Rams jumped to a 21-0 lead and went on to beat the Eagles 33-10. Also going on the sidelines to visit with Rodney Hampton also made it a good night for Coach Jones anyway.

But the man of the hour is long time coach Garry Dunham and his staff for the work they did in getting their team ready for district action. “Anyone who faces us can get ready to defend the pass because our offense is built around Anthony (Wiltz) and we are going to put it up”. Dunham went on to say they don’t have the back like Nate Guillory who just left the Philadelphia Eagles camp to run anymore. “We have to run our offense with Anthony and that’s throwing the football”. Dunham added the numbers are down at Kashmere but that’s not going to stop them from playing hard and fielding a team year in and year out. “Hey King I go down the hall ask our students to take part in the program and the last three years we are the only team in our district that has a

freshman and junior varsity squad”. Somewhere around 80 of the 400 or so students at Kashmere are on their football team. “We played Sealy and lost by 20 points and we lost by six points to Huffman but that made us better when it comes to district and our kids believe in what we are doing”. The rest of the staff is Caleb Anderson, Dwayne Colbert, Tyrone Dargins, Robert Harmon, Hosea Jackson, Thomas Lester and Robert Shaw. It’s certainly clear to me that coach Dunham gets the most out of what he has to offer and it showed big time as they turned back Washington 33-10. This without a doubt gives them the leg up in district play in the first week of action.

BRANDON ‘TANK’ JACKSON COMES HOME By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Oh my how time really flies when you are having fun. During the fall of 2003 the Booker T. Washington Eagles appeared to be state bound. Thanks to the hard running of Brandon “Tank” Jackson as they led Katy 12-0 and things took a turn for the worse late in the second period. The Katy defensive staff were having a heated discussion on how to stop Jackson at the half. For the game he would finish with 170 yards and three touchdowns in only 17 carries. The Katy Tigers went on to beat Southlake Carroll in the Alamodome later that year for the state title. Many

people feel that should have been the year of the Eagles. The program has never been the same since that year.

So while the Kashmere Rams were beating Washington 33-10, we spotted Jackson staying at midfield looking down on his former team. We had talked with him earlier in the day at the TSU-Alcorn State game at Delmar. “I’m here to see my old high school play and I think Washington can do something this year, because I was pretty impressed with their win over Yates in the Fiesta Booker Bryant Memorial Classic”. Jackson personally wanted to take a look at John Gibbs Jr. because he is fun to watch. “I

really think Washington has something this year once they tighten up the ship”.

After graduating from Washington, Jackson went to UT El Paso and then transferred to Tennessee State and made second team All-American at the fullback position. “I had a chance to meet a lot of good football players at UT-El Paso so I feel blessed to have gone there and the same holds true for Tennessee State University. He got his masters in sport administration and marketing by working with the Buffalo Bills and he still plans to give the football game another shot”.

ANTHONY WILTZ-KASHMERE The program says he 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs in at 160 pounds but he appears to be even smaller than that. But he is quick as a cat and tough as concrete nails. If you haven’t guessed, I’m talking about Kashmere senior quarterback Anthony Wiltz. The signal

caller hit on six of his first seven passes for three touchdowns as the Rams blew past Booker T.Washington, 33-10, to open District 22-4A play. Wiltz went on to connect on 12 of 17 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns in the air. He also rushed for a team leading 57 yards on

In closing Jackson said people are talking about Washington but Joe Fields a graduate who spent two seasons with the Bengals and himself are living proof that good people come out of Washington. In fact Jackson is working on his certification and he plans to teach and coach at Washington in the near future.

With so much bad stuff mixed three carries and scored twice on the ground. Keep in mind this kid accounted for all five Kashmere touchdowns on the night.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

into the pro sport scene we asked Jackson how he can help people in such a tough environment. “I think it’s all about humbling yourself and having pride and staying prayerful and staying away from the worldly things that cause those problems”.

We spoke with the outstanding senior quarterback about his performance and their jump start against the Eagles. “It wasn’t easy; it was just hard work in practice and we came into the game ready to play”. Robert Jenkins had four of Wiltz’s tosses as well as two of his three touchdowns thrown and he commented on his receivers. “I just have faith in my receivers and we are doing this as a team”.

Former BTW great Brandon “Tank” Jackson visit Delmar as it bring back Memories of his days at BTW -photo by Jerry Woodley Jr.

Not taking credit for his success this season, Wiltz says it’s a team effort and that’s what it going to take to win the district title. “We all have Kashmere written across our chest and we fight to win games together and it’s not anything special from me because we are all equal”. Last year the Rams jumped on the Eagles 14-0 and once lead by a score of 40-24 early in the fourth period only to lose 41-40. “That falling by one point hurt us last year and this time around I knew we had to come and play hard and we told each other we were going to go unbeaten in district this year”.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - JOSEPH JACKSON - KASHMERE By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View When the Kashmere Rams opened their district play they remember jumping out on the Booker T. Washington Eagles 14-0 last year and leading 40-24 before the Eagles came back won the game 41-40. This time around the Rams jumped to a 21-0 lead and defensive end Joseph Jackson said he was not going to allow that to happen again. The 6 feet 3 inch 215 pound end kept getting past Washington interior line and putting a clamp on quarterback John Gibbs. At one point Jackson even tripped Gibbs as he was trying to run to daylight. “Yes sir last year was on my mind and we knew we could not let up on them this time around”. We asked Jackson what were some the keys as to why they were able to get into the Washington back field so much. “Mainly technique, but hard work, agility and skills; once I got behind their line I went for

the quarterback or running back”. We talked more with Jackson to understand why he made it look so easy against the Eagles. “The basic is what was happening all night long so we just stayed focused and kept the same fire we had in the first half”.

In closing Jackson said the Rams are going to win the district championship this time around. “We are not only a football team but we are also a big happy family and we plan to go a long ways in the playoffs this year”.

LINEMAN OF THE WEEK MOSES ALVIDREZ - TSU By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Every now and then we like to surprise a player with a profile on them without ever saying anything to them. That’s the case with offensive lineman Moses Alvidrez a redshirt junior on the Texas Southern University offensive line. This kid from Mayfair High School in Long Beach, California is getting the job done week in and week out. After watching number 54 take care of business in the Prairie View as well as the game against Alcorn we came to the conclusion this kid is good. Listed at 6 feet one tall and weighing somewhere around 290 pounds this guy can move mountains and that just what he

did with the Alcorn Braves defensive linemen. He helped the Tigers to 173 yards on 37 carries and giving Rico Small plenty of time to throw the ball. Fact is the Tigers had plenty of time to do whatever they wanted against the Braves. Keep in mind he was not alone as Quinn Criss, Marvin Hollie, Kenneth Hall and Ray Rodriguez were among those who were lending him a hand. But you could tell when they ran to their right they were looking to see where number 54 was headed so it made a clearer path to where they wanted to run. So for the big fellow this Bud is for you and the good blocking you do!

A RISING STAR-ALBERT DAVIS - KASHMERE By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View It would certainly appear the Kashmere Rams make the most of what they have to work with. Albert Davis is living proof of that, the talented sophomore player was all over the field in their 33-10 win over Booker T. Washington. He opened the game as the setback in the spread offense, and then once

they scored he kicked the first three points after touchdowns for a smooth 21-0 lead early in the second period. Davis even spent a few plays in at linebacker as well. “I love playing and trying to help our team win games and we believe in working hard, so it paid off for us against Booker T, tonight”. With a love for the game Davis says he doesn’t mind going both

ways and just enjoying playing for coach Garry Dunham and his staff. All players we interviewed from the Kashmere Rams mention the hard work they put into getting ready for the season. “Yes sir I think playing Sealy and West Columbia helped to get us ready for district and I honestly think we are better than we were last year”. It showed as the Rams jumped out to 21-0 lead and certainly wanted to keep their distance from Washington so they could not get back into the game. “Well to be honest with you sir, it kind of surprised me a little bit that we were able to jump up by 21 points early in the second period”. In closing Davis added he feels the Rams are going to continue to work hard and who knows they might even make it to state.

THE COLLEGE SPORTS REPORT Jerry Woodley When will it ever end! What has happened to reasoning? This has happened to strong leaders of institutions of higher learning. Have they succumbed to the almighty dollar, like the rest of corporate America? Presidents, Board of Regents, are making decisions for dollars that will be spent as fast as they get their hands on it. Why you ask? Because, other than Men’s basketball, the rest of your athletic programs will have to use that money brought in for equipment and travel. Most college programs are already operating at a deficit. So, what’s another couple of 100 thousand dollars to make an alumnus happy that his are her school is playing in so and so conference. So you can stand tall in the break room. But, the NCAA wants you to believe that the student-athlete is the most important piece of property at these institutions of higher learning. Too bad nobody is keeping the Institutions informed about this. That is, until one of these institutions

screws up andthen its close the school borders. And for the NCAA to make a comment, “that we can only be consultants,” where Institutions move according to where the Football money is, why complain. Once again nobody has asked the opinion of the coaches or“student-athletes” because they will be the ones that will have to persevere through all this realignment crap. And to say that it has slowed down, you are sadly mistaken. Just recently, the Big East got slapped around by two of its schools (Syracuse and Pittsburgh). Syracuse is a founding member of the Big East. They are both moving to the ACC. Now check this out, they both got this done under cone of silence. Nobody and I mean nobody saw or heard about this until after it was done. Including the Big East Commissioner, who by the way found out the same way everyone else did, over the news. Wasn’t staying in contact with his Institutions, he was totally out of the loop. Interesting how those two schools made a Basketball move

for the Football money. And it will work for them. One time zone, all athletic programs are relevant, BCS Conference=money, money, money. There seems be a lot of misremembering these days and a lot of misbeliefs. As I mentioned earlier, that money that you picked up from your bowl appearance and barely paid for your Football party will now be used to pay for your institution’s, other athletic teams to go cross country for a minimum of 3 to 4 days. Because Administration made cash grabs, without thinking about the consequences of their action, where Football will most likely travel weekends, Thursdays or Friday to Sunday night. The other athletic teams will be traveling during class time, Monday thru Friday. One in particular, which

stands out is Golf. Why, because of access to golf courses, whether publicly or privately. Unfortunately this subject is not dying quietly. For when it is too quiet, is when the wind and dust is about to blow. P.S. Two college games, three high school games, same stadium. Why does the play back screen only work during the HIGH SCHOOL GAMES? Keenum returns to the Field of Play With anticipation of a little kid, UH Sr-RS, QB, Kase Keenum stepped out. Taking charge of the UH Cougar offense. Oh what a feeling it was, especially since the Cougars opponent was the UCLA Bruins. The same team that he received his season end-

ing injury from. He gave an account of himself as he normally does, without allowing last seasons game to filtering into his mind. Well, sort of, like when he took an open field run, then quickly getting to the sidelines as soon as possible. His teammates and coach were able to exhale again when got up from a hit early in the game that gave credence that this particular game was not going end like last year. 30-40-0, 310yds, 2TD’s, not numbers for a return to play. The Cougars are now 4-0, heading into conference play. Thursday night at UTEP. As coach says sometimes,”hopefully they haven’t forgot.”

WHEATLEY WILDCATS CHEERLEADERS MAKING SOME NOISE By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View The Wheatley Wildcats cheerleaders are a quality group of girls who really work hard at cheering for Wheatley sports. The 2011-2012 Varsity squad consists of Tai’la Jones and Chelse O.Gilvie the two captains and O’Gilvie has qualified to be

an All-American. They are joined by Kendall Perkins, Taylor Herbert, Aleigha Taylor, Sade Hall, Jordan Herbert, Jakendria Parker and Kennedi Davis. Their sponsor is Shanna Thomas and she has them in high gear. All during the game they are working to get their fans into the game. Were it not

for several poor officiating moves they may have cheered the Wildcats past Jack Yates for the first time since 1977. Taking time with the younger kids in an effort to keep the program going, the Wildcats Cheerleaders are some of the best in the city and each time we

see Wheatley play we look forward to seeing them put on a show. Moving into my 30th year of covering high school sports it’s good to see the kids show good spirit and really work the way the Lady Wildcats do at their games. The fans are a far cry from what it used to be when the

Wildcats and Lions hook up, but with matchups with Kashmere and Booker T. Washington looming I know the Wildcats cheerleaders will be working hard. Regardless of the outcome of their season this year, one thing is for sure, when the Wildcats take to the field, they will have a lot of cheering on their side.

PV PANTHERS CLAW THEIR WAY PAST TSU 37-34

By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View The Prairie View A & M Panthers clawed their way out of a 14 point hole and beat the SWAC defending football champs of TSU 37-34 before a packed house at Delmar Stadium. A crowd of more than 12,500 fans jammed the stadium for the annual showdown. TSU winners of the SWAC championship last year had a bitter taste in their mouths after the Panthers beat them last year. Fact is the Tigers went 8-1 in the conference with the Panthers being the only team to beat them. As it turned out it was more of the same and first year head coach Heishma Northern put his team to work trailing 34-20 and

pulled it off. “I know once we pick up all the guys from the hospital we know we have some people who will fight to win games”. He went to talk about Jerry Lovelocke who is 6 feet 5 inches tall and weighs in at 195 pounds who came into the game and lead the Panthers to three scores and the win. “This guy has the potential to be the biggest guy on campus and being only a freshman to play that well, we feel good about having him”. The first year coach added he understands Lovelocke might make a few mistakes but he also made some very big plays under pressure. “The no huddle offense bothered TSU a little and we noticed they were getting cramps and we started pounding them up the middle”. Going up and back all

season long the young Panthers are going to play hard no matter what the score is.

Freshman kicker Chris Barrick from Copperas Cove booted a field goal with only four seconds left for the Panthers victory. “I knew it was going in from the time my foot hit the ball and I want to give all the glory to God for helping us pull it out”. When the Panthers were down by 14 points Barrick said he knew he would have a shot at winning the game and he would make the most of it. “I was a little nervous but I had faith it was going through all along; our offense and defense worked well with the special teams to pull out this win”.

upon the hill. With quick moves and a powerful arm this kid has a great deal of potential and look to hear from him in the near future. Andrian Hamilton and Chris Townsend led the defensive charge and stopped TSU when it counted the most. This marks five straight years P V had beaten TSU and when you consider how young the Panthers are, this could continue.

The sensational freshman Jerry Lovelocke says it took a while to get TSU to fall for what they were doing but once they got it going they kept it rolling. “We love the fast paced game and the last drive we wanted to move forward and not get sacked; we would get to the end zone”. The youngster from Baltimore Maryland said he loves the program at P.V. and looks forward to make the most of his stay

TSU SLIPPED PAST ALCORN 14-7 AT DELMAR

By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Thanks to a bobbled snap on a fourth period punt, the Tigers got 24 yards and a first down from the punter Francois Ejiofor. The sophomore from HoustonWestbury broke off to his left needing 17 yards for a first down, made a move and got 24 yards. “Well when I realized the snap was botched I got the ball and quickly looked to my left and saw an opening, so I took off with the ball”. Ejiofor went to say he was talking with the TSU backs (Marcus Gilbert) during practice and picked up a couple of moves from them that he used to get the big play. As we talked more with the punter we asked him how does he concentrate on getting the ball high and long. Also we

Coach Kevin Ramsey meeting the press following TSU win

asked about Reggie Robey who was the first African American who punted for the Washington Redskins in the NFL and was sometimes accused of out punting his coverage. “I’ve never had that problem with my punts. My coaches tell me to get it high and far as I can and when the distances are shorter I aim for the sidelines to try and pen them deep”. Having missed the P V game due to breaking team rules Francois said he is truly happy to be back with his teammates. “My coaches expect me to make big plays and that’s what I did and I think you guys for interviewing me and covering TSU football. After a scoreless first period the Tigers drew first blood as Rico Smalls found tight end Kirk Fitzhugh from seven yards out. Then in the third, Smalls took it in from 16 yards away and the Tigers led it 14-0 before Alcorn answered with an 84 yard punt return to close the gap. The big run on 4th and 17 by punter

Francois Ejiofor set the Tigers up with 3:30 left and Marcus Gilbert who led the Tigers with 87 yards had a big run on third and one to allow TSU to run out the clock. In talking with Gilbert he told us he feels the Tigers are well on their way to having another good year. “Yes we are getting all things into place to make another good run again”. Gilbert praised the offensive line for getting the job done

when it counted the most. “We knew what we had to do and everyone did their part and we ran out the clock”. He went on to praise the coaching staff and the offensive line to the success of the team. “Practice makes perfect and we have a very good practicing team and there is room for improvement and we will continue to work hard”. In closing he thanked God for his line and the coaching staff at TSU for a job well done.

Cornerback Kydarian Wilkins said the Tigers work very hard when they are preparing for a game. “I‘ve been in this defense for three years and Coach Ramsey expects us to be ready when game day comes around”. The Braves threw three straight fades and they kind of expected that from Melvin Spears, the first year coach at Alcorn State. “Our defensive line is our best friend because when they are handling their business we can handle our business and the more pressure they put on teams the more turnovers we get”. One of the reasons the Tigers are on track is the play of safety Darveon Trahan the freshman redshirt from Jack Yates High School. While at Yates he started three years at quarterback becoming the only one in the school’s history to achieve such an honor. When he got to TSU he was the 5th quarterback on the depth charts. “That was the best move I could have made and now I’m a starting free safe-

ty, plus what I learned on offense helps me now on the other side of the ball. Trahan went on to say the Tigers are going to get better as they continue to work hard in practice and has a great deal of potential to be as good as last year’s squad or even better. Trahan recorded one of three interceptions the Tigers had on the Braves passers. In closing he simply said seeing TSU win the SWAC championship a year ago was a wonderful experience and now he looks forward to getting ready to win another one.

Defensively Tray Walker another freshman from TSU had a big pick as well and he too is very promising. “It’s just practice and hard work and we do what we have to do when we get on the field”. The true freshman went onto to say Coach Ramsey really pushes them and talks with them about mistakes they make to correct them and move forward.

pressure people and get (Jamal Baker) our linebackers going. Despite the fact teams are going to nine men fronts against the Tigers they still managed to run the ball down the stretch. “Our backs are getting some good five and six yard runs, but we had some dropped passes and that hurt us a bit so we need to smooth some of that out and we’ll be all right”. In closing coach Ramsey said the specialty teams have to play better and do a better job tackling. “Our punter (Ejiofor) did a good job on the run but if he had gotten tackled it would have been a bad decision on his part”. The Tigers will play Jackson State on Thursday September 29th night making for a short work week.

Coach Kevin Ramsey is now 2-1 with the Tigers and he talked about how they fared so far. “I was real pleased with the way our defense kept Alcorn out of the end zone, but the penalties is something we are going to have to cut back on”. Ramsey went on to say they started three freshmen and two of them had big picks for the team. “Trahan along with Walker and (Adrian) Bennett played well today and it helped that our defense got some swarm to the ball and you know that’s the way we play on defense”. The Way I See It By BIG John Chandler Watching football in 2011 from the high schools up to the pros, I’ve noticed that something is missing. Don’t get me wrong, the games have been great. In fact better than I believed they would be. But still something is missing. Defense, once the main topic of everyone regarding football no longer is the main subject matter. If fact defense has dropped from shut the other team out to bend but don’t break. I don’t see great defensive players being drafted as was the case years ago. Linebackers have become an afterthought. Forget about cornerbacks-if a player can run backwards five

yards and remain on his feet, he’s a cornerback. Defensive linemen, once the rage of football, can’t tackle or plug up holes as they once did. What has happened to the game? Well I’ve got an opinion and it may not be right but this is my column so here goes: 1. Rules have changed the gameSome rules were needed as the outlawing of the ‘Deacon Jones head slap’. This was a dangerous move and could cause severe head injuries. But the changing of the five yard rule regarding contact of the receivers, the tacking of quarterbacks, and

Page 30

DEFENSE NO LONGER REQUIRED now overall types of hits defensive players can make on offensive ball carriers has made the game barley resemble the game I watched as a child in the 70’s and 80’s. 2. Best athletes are trained as offensive position players-Let’s be honest. Andre Johnson of the Houston Texans would never be placed as a safety. He wanted to be a receiver, trained as one and was recruited as one for the University of Miami. That said good athletes may be suited to play defense, but are placed on the offensive side of the ball. Money is paid to offensive talent. Defensive players are paid, but not at the level of offensive players including offensive linemen. 3. College game has changed-By all accounts the college game

has changed. Most of the top 25 programs have wide open, spread offenses. Their top recruits are quarterbacks, receivers, running backs and offensive linemen. Linebackers and defensive linemen are recruited but have to be at the top of the list to be top recruits. That’s just the way it is. Now trust me, I’m not complaining about the overall game itself. There is a reason football is the number one sport in America. The fans love it! But no one including me likes the changes that have been made to change the game. I love defense and that’s the game I grew up with. I loved watching a great defense come up with a game plan to shut down a high-powered offense. The game is fast and the athletes today are bigger and faster than the ones I grew up

watching. But changing so many rules, placing the best athletes on the offensive side of the ball and viewing colleges change the entire game to match the pro game has made the game different. Change is not always good when it really is just change. I challenge you readers to notice the game changes the next time you see a high school, college and/or pro game. For our older readers, I ask you this questionis this the same game you remember viewing just 20 years ago? To our younger readers, I ask you, is defensive football today good or different than what it should be? Enjoy the game now because as I said before change always seems to be a part of the equation. That’s just the way I see it!

LEGENDARY SOCIAL ACTIVIST ESTER KING PASSES By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View With more than 50 years standing on the front lines under his belt Ester Lee King passed away quietly in Houston, Texas on September 1, 2011. King suffered a mild heart attack in August, was mostly known for his longtime activist work for social change. He even marched with the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and went to jail along with Shape Community Center Director Deloyd Parker. Among some of his works included the founding of the National Black United Front and other organizations. King served a mentor for others who wanted to fight for justice and equality for all people. One of his most recent fights was to stop the death penalty and in the fall of 2010 King led a protest outside Harris County Criminal Court building in Downtown Houston. Born on June 26, 1943 in Magnolia Springs to Vergie Mae and David King and grew up in Acres Homes graduating from Carverdale High School in the Cypress-Fairbanks school district in 1962. He would later attend Bishop College in Dallas, before leaving to join the United States Army.

Ester got his taste of what the Civil Rights movement would be when Emmett Till was killed in 1955 in Mississippi. King who was the same age as Till thought that could have been him and from that point on he wanted to fight for justice and he did for the rest of his life. Working as a boiler maker for Dunn Heat Exchangers in Texas City, King served as the union representative until he retired in 2008 after 26 years with the company. A devoted husband to his wife Leallia King for 41 years, Ester also leaves to mourn a daughterTandiwee Kone who was once our Forward Times Student of the week. He also leaves a son Ahmed Sekou Toure King and many other family and friends as well as admirers and followers. Known for his most distinguished voice on radio shows including a regular on KPFT and KCOH and in the past on KYOK, King was not afraid to speak his mind. But what most people don’t know is King also helped in the first to justice and equality for Hispanics and other minorities as well. He even working with Palestinian communities along

with women groups and immigrants as well as the environments. King was there everywhere there was a fight for justice and equality. While attending one of the many memorial services for King we noted people from all walks of life coming to say kind words as one of the most permanent voices of all time lay silently in the coffin and people walked up and wept deeply.

during the movement days”. Parker went on to say it’s our appointed duty to keep King’s name alive and to continue his works. “There will never be another Ester Lee King, but we can work hard to keep his work going as best we can, that’s all I ask of you and may God bless Ester’s family”. We met King for the first time in

the middle 80s and found him to be real serious about the civil rights movement and not once did he ever seek personal gains from it, just out there working to level the playing field for all people. We will always remember that about King and we have already made our donation to Shape Center in his honor and would encourage you to do the same!

Through all his works King made it clear he was for a non violent protester and worked closely with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee affiliated and called Friends of SNCC and Afro-American for Black Libration. There is a wonderful painting of Ester King at the Shape Center on Live Oak and we encourage you to go by and see it. The King Family has asked if you would like to donate to the Shape Center in King’s honor, you can do so by contacting Shape Community Center.com for more information. Deloyd Parker was one of those who attended the many services for King and spoke at the Shine of Black Madonna services. “I’m not ready to let brother King go yet, we went through a lot together including going to jail

A KING-SIZE MOVER AND SHAKER: MARCUS MOSELEY By Dr. Victor Keys A King-Size View Our KI G-SIZE Mover and Shaker for the month of September is Marcus Moseley. I met Mr. Moseley several years ago and if you know Mr. Moseley, he never meets a stranger. He is always friendly, kind, and is smiling most of the time. Now, in talking with Mr. Moseley, we have discussed many issues and world concerns. However, when you mention Jack Yates High School and the Third Ward area, Mr. Moseley’s face lights up! Mr. Moseley informed me that he grew up in Third Ward and he is one of 12 children; he stated that “there were six boys and six girls” in his family. He added that “there were a lot of musicians and athletes in his family but, he was the best athlete in the entire family”. I said sure Mr. Moseley, but then he gave me the year, the athletic event, the team, and the news paper articles to back him up. Let me tell you, Mr. Moseley’ athletic achievements are extremely impressive! In 1958, he was on the Yates State Championship Track team as a hurdler and played on the varsity football team. In 1959, he placed 3rd in his district and 2nd in the city of Houston as a hurdler, and was an Honorable Mention All State Football player. In 1960, Mr. Moseley was not only the best hurdler in the city of Houston; he finished 2nd in the pole vault, and 4th in the long jump. He added that “many of my achievements came as an under classman but, as a senior I cleaned up”. After high school he played football and ran track for Texas Southern University (TSU). He

joined the Peace Corps after graduating from TSU and started his coaching career. While in Kingston, Jamaica, serving in the Peace Corps; he coached their track team to Parish and National Championships. In 1966 Mr. Moseley was drafted into the Viet Nam war, and when his tour of duty ended; he became a teacher and taught Social Studies, Math, and Physical Education. He also coached football, basketball, and track. Currently, Mr. Moseley is a Campus Manager for the Houston Community College (HCC) and a Substitute Teacher for the Harris County Department of Education (HCDE). Mr. Moseley stated that “God has blessed him tremendously and he can’t thank him enough for the wonderful opportunities and achievements he has received during his life time”. During my interview, Mr. Moseley also talked about the love he has for his family, friends, and the people that God put in his life. He showed me many pictures of him, his family, and teammates from the 50’s and 60’s. Mrs. Denise Jones, who is one of his co-workers with HCC and HCDE, stated that “Mr. Moseley is a wonderful mentor and is always willing to go beyond the call of duty for HCC and HCDE”. I also discovered the love he has for Jack Yates High School, old Yates H.S. (Ryan M.S.), and Third Ward Texas. Mr. Moseley is truly a unique individual and that’s why he is the KI G-SIZE Mover and Shaker for the month of September.

MAURICE SKILLERN COMING TO HOUSTON

Grooves of Houston 2300 Pierce St. Houston ,Texas 77003 Wednesday, November 30, 2011 @ 6pm - 10pm Maurice Skillern was born in Houston, Texas in August 1966. After graduating high school, he joined the active duty ranks in The United States Army where he has spent most of his adult life. He earned his Bachelors of Science from the University of Nebraska where he also earned his Masters in Physician Assistant Studies. Maurice found early in life that he appreciated the play on words that poetry could facilitate along with simply enjoying the individual songs from the hearts of poets that both amazed and stimulated his own thoughts. He has read the works of many of the greats of poetry with a few of his favorites being Edgar Allan Poe, Maya Angelou and Langston Hughes. He has also cultivated a mind open to new thoughts and ideas which made philosophy a subject that he was immediately at home with. In this pursuit, he has personally studied philosophers from Socrates and Aristotle to Sextus Empiricus. It is the synthesis of these two disciplines that form the foundation of his current work, which he refers to as “Poetic-Philosophy”*. In his writing, in a whimsical but focused fashion, he speaks of that which is, while alluding to what could or what might be. He also uses catalytic and well designed phraseology to effectively display new thoughts and ideologies. Some of his writings both challenge or question absolutes of this world, while still offering thought provoking entertainment to all who have read them. Always a visionary, a dreamer, he set out and began writing his first book of poetic-philosophy in 1990, with a piece from it being published in the anthology The Space Between in 1994. He continued on his writing quest and furthered his exploration of many different thoughts, ideas and forms of expression, which eventually culminated in the creation and publication of his current book “Messages”.
