Are We Truly Thankful? Luke 17:11-19 “11Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee.12As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy[a] met him. They henry Nelson stood at a distance13and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!”14When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests” And as they went, they were cleansed.15One of them, when he saw he was healed, cameback, praising God in a loud voice.16He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him and he was a Samaritan.17Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? J

ust two short years ago, Citibank started an advertising campaign on television for their new line of credit cards. This line of cards carries rewards or prizes that you can receive for using the card. It is just

their way of saying “Thank you” to the customer for choosing to use their card. One of the commercials, which I found quite humorous, involved two ladies in the grocery store. The one lady puts her hand on the stomach of the other and asks her when the baby is due. The woman then looks at her and says, “I’m not pregnant.” Not knowing what else to say, the woman replies, “Thank you.” With this simple reply, the offended woman forgets the insulting words that were just uttered, and the two ladies embrace. Citibank then flashes their slogan across the screen that states, “It’s amazing what a simple thank you can do.” Amen! It is amazing what a simple thank you can do. How many of you have been uplifted by receiving a thank you note from someone you have helped along the way? I recently received a CD from one of my friends in college. He has just started out in the Christian music business, and he sent me a copy of his disc. On the CD, he wrote the following phrase. “Thank you for letting me borrow your guitar when we were in college.” That thank you made my day. He was grateful even for something small I had done. To tell you the truth, I had actually forgotten that I ever lent him a guitar, but his thankfulness for this small event made me smile all day. Even though there are some people like my friend who truly are thankful in all things,

most people are only thankful when they have to be. This goes for Christians as well. That is a terrible thing to have to say, but it is the truth. Why else would we have to have a special day to offer thanksgiving? If we gave thanks all the time like we should, there would be no need to have this holiday. I do not believe that we are ungrateful and unthankful on purpose. I think we are because it is our nature as humans to take things for granted and it is nothing new. People were not thankful in Jesus’ day either. In Luke, chapter 17, we are told about an event that warranted thanks. If you have your Bible, turn with me now to Luke 17 starting with verse 11. Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” When he saw them, he said, “Go show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went they were cleansed. One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him – and he was a Samaritan. Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your

C ity B eat faith has made you well. This week, I want to take a look at three aspects of thankfulness that we need to glean from this Scripture. Let’s ask the Lord to bless our time. Aspect #1: There are no good excuses for unthankfulness. We as Americans love to make excuses. After all, nothing is ever our fault. No one in jail has ever committed a crime. It was always someone else’s fault when a little child gets in trouble, they will always blame it on another person. When a politician gets in a bind, they will always find something else to pin the blame on. One of my favorite excuses of all time was in a popular lawsuit filed a few years back. A woman spilled her McDonald’s coffee on her lap and got burned. Then, she sued the company for hundreds of thousands of dollars. It was not her fault that the coffee spilled and burned her even though she was the only one in the car. It was the fault of McDonalds because their hot coffee was too hot. Even though she would have probably have complained if the coffee was too cold, she won this lawsuit. Even though it was entirely her fault, McDonald’s had to take the blame because she had a good enough excuse in the eyes of the judge

A Soulful Thanksgiving By: Bettye “Katt” Williams ELITE NEWS STAFF WRITER

I

t’s that time of the year again. The leaves are turning colors and falling off the trees. you pass by people picking up pecans for pies or just enjoyment. you know what that means…Thanksgiving is officially here and it’s time to brush up on our traditions whether they are new one’s or perhaps tweak the old ones. Nothing is better than spending time with family and friends, relaxing, eating, watching football, and perhaps a good movie or two. Thanksgiving is always a special time in families lives but for some of my Thanksgiving’s, I had no loved ones to share Thanksgiving with. I take time out each year to give thanks for my life and what I have. I may not have had the family and loved ones others had growing up, but I am thankful and grateful for what my life has turned out to be and the family and friends that I have today. I use to watch other families make Thanksgiving a number one priority where they would always get together for Thanksgiving and express what they were thankful for. Today, I give thanks for my children, grandchildren, my extended family, my work family, and my life God has blessed me to see thus far. Many family traditions are mostly what make the holidays so special. Whether it’s repeating old time traditions or making new ones. It just makes for a very special holiday; especially shared with family and friends. With my extended family (Mrs. Rosie Ford), I think about the smell of pastries and cornbread dressing cooking during the Thanksgiving holidays and it stirs up so many happy memories with The Ford family. There are many twists on Thanksgiving menus. It all depends on what you and your families want each year. you can have the traditional turkey, or the fried turkey, that a lot of people are cooking now days. Many families have the traditional side dishes of candied yams, collard greens, macaroni and cheese, and my favorite dish is Broccoli and Cheese Casserole. Or, you can do something

S

totally different. Do you have a special recipe that may be handed down for holiday menus? Here’s the kind of Thanksgiving menu I grew up with! Roasted Turkey (substituted Bake Chicken when we couldn’t afford a Turkey), Giblet Gravy, Cornbread Dressing, Candied yams, Collard Greens, Macaroni & Cheese, Cornbread, Baked Ham, Fried Chicken, Potato Salad, Sweet Potato Pie, Pecan Pie, Chess Pie, Dinner Rolls, Chocolate Cake and Pound Cake. I have always wondered how other cultures celebrate Thanksgiving. Do they eat the same thing on Thanksgiving that African Americans eat? In my research, I found out that for the most part immigrants as a whole do not celebrate Thanksgiving. MexicanAmericans generally follow the traditional Thanksgiving meal but may also include some Mexican dishes. However, the first generation of Mexican-Americans still follow and serve the traditional Mexican feast surrounding tamales. Native Americans will generally serve the same traditional Thanksgiving meal; except they don’t cook Collard Greens and they will

substitute Sweet Potatoes Pie with Pumpkin Pie. We realized that every culture may have a unique tradition. Asians have the traditional Thanksgiving food, like turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and so on, and then follow it up with a mini round of Korean food. And of course, what is a Thanksgiving without Football? After dinner and everyone is rubbing their stomachs from over eating, it's time to watch some football. So I’m sure every family will be watching the Dallas Cowboys at 4:15 pm on Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving Day is the official beginning of the Christmas season. The Friday after Thanksgiving is famously known as “Black Friday.” For women, that means getting up early in the wee hours for a shopping spree for sales and profits. The entire atmosphere during the time is euphoric; people get in a holiday mood. Families visit family and friends and decorate their house or Christmas tree. What are some of your holiday traditions? Was there a favorite dish or recipe? Happy Holidays to your family from mine!

“ Corporal Punishment According to the Holy Bible”

of

Dr. William M. Campbell

you may not have enough money for what you want; but you’ll always have enough God for what you need.

F

irst of all any Black person over fifty years of age is living proof that a good spanking never killed anybody, neither did it give one a mixed up attitude. We as Black people have let other Ethnic groups persuade us into believing corporal punishment does something to the mind and attitudes of children. you are right, it does do something to minds and attitudes. It straightened them out, and put kids in the right order. Psychologist have gotten rich because of people listening to people like Oprah Winfrey and others instead of following the instructions of the Bible. Solomon wrote the proverbs, and all people who have read the Bible at all understand that God himself gave Solomon wisdom from on high. Solomon was the wisest man who ever lived, and Solomon knew what he was talking about because his Dad was King David who let his children get away with too much as children. Instead of David taking some time to really raise his children he was off fighting wars, or something. So we see that Solomon had first hand experience at knowing all about what corporal punishment can accomplish. As we read the stories of David’s life we find that his children was raised with a light hand eventhough he was King of Israel. But, his son realized what was happening because of his Godly wisdom, and wrote about it in Proverbs. Look at verse 6 in the 22nd chapter of Proverbs, “Train up a child in the way he

should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” This passage of scripture refers to the total process of molding your child’s life. Look at the word (train) in Hebrew (chanak) meaning to put into the mouth in order to condition the Palate. This is a by – product to help your child develop a taste for the things of God. The biblical pattern of effective parental training emphasizes a balance of instruction and discipline. A parent should neither be overly authoritarian nor overly permissive. A parent should balance love and discipline in a manner as not to provoke his child to rebellion against him. Personally I do not think my mother cared whether you rebelled or not, because she could make a Gorilla behave himself. The phrase, “When“ he is old,” simply means to grow up as a mature adult. This does not refer to his elderly years. This simply means that education in the home shapes any person throughout their lifetime. Listen to Proverbs 22:15, “ Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.” What is this passage saying to us? It is simply saying that young children automatically inherit foolishness because they are just getting here, and they have not lived long enough to experience wisdom. Now! If that foolishness is not driven out of them it will take root in them and never have the opportunity of being discarded from them. Then what will you have? A 50 year old man not being responsible for anything, children or nothing else, cap still on backwards, untied shoes, bare chested with no shirt on, and disrespectful toward everybody. Black parents, let’s get a handle on this thing and try to salvage what we have left. Do not let other Ethnic groups dictate to us as what we need to do with our children. Let us not forget to read our Bibles. And May God Bless you REAL GOOD, and may He ever keep you in His loving care.

Memorial Services for LOTTA O. EXCUSES

R

ecently our church held a Ministry Leaders’ Retreat followed by a forum to motivate non- volunteers to volunteer for service to their local church, based on their spiritual gifts. How do you motivate church volunteers? Are Geraldine we "burning out" our Davidson-hooker best people? What can we do to motivate the pew- sitters? How do you dismiss the long list of excuses members gives for not volunteering? I wrote a mocked epitaph to lie to rest excuses members gives. Today, we celebrate the demise of Lotta Excuses. Lotta was born to the parentage of Adam and Eve, the beginning of the Excuse Tribe. in the Garden of Eden, many, many, years ago. The eldest of a multitude of siblings, Lotta was very well versed and educated. She was blessed the gift to be a devoted servant. She was exceptional, intelligent and bright. A philanthropist whose presence in mankind’s lives could have been very rewarding and deeply appreciated. Lotta had so much to offer. Affectionately known as, “I Don’t Have Time, Let Somebody Else Do It,” by all that knew and loved her, she often found reasons to pass responsibilities on to others. Lotta was charitable, beautiful, smart, engaging and kind. Occasionally, she would greet strangers with gracious dignity and warmth. At times, she was a trusted advisor, confidante, and prayer warrior, yet she was satisfied sitting in the church pews. Lotta Excuses passed away peacefully on Saturday Night, October 29, 2011, with relatives and family by her side. Lotta is survived by: Fuller Excuses, Moore Excuses, Minnie Excuses, Bunch O. Excuses, Feeble Excuse, Over Used Excuse, Excuse After Excuse, twins Itsa Tu Early and Itsa Tu Late Excuse, Ida Hava Job Excuse, I.M. Tired Excuse, and fraternal twins, Ben Ther and Don Tha Excuse. Apathetic, Unconcerned, Slothful, Lazy, Lethargic, and Non Committal were also in attendance. Lotta Excuses will be remembered by her associates: Ira Fuse, Myra Grets, Maybee Tamara, Noah Willnot, Justin Case, R.U. Kiddin, Mae B. Later, Lloyd Knota Chance, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Spiritual gifts are to be used out of love for God and for others, and in service for God and to others. Volunteering is not just about helping others. What you’ll find out when you volunteer is that serving others is also the best way to grow in your relationship with God.

Concerned Friend,

Notes From Union Hope

O

ur Church school lesson was “Praying as God's People”Matt.6:515. This lesson dealt with how we should pray and what we should expect. There Eld lloyd T. Morgan must be a certain mind set for prayer. Prayer isn’t about showing off our greatness to God in some public way. We should go primarily to our Lord with Humility in a private way. We as believers must trust in prayer remembering that our request is no mystery to God. We are not passing on information to God he already know what we need but he desire to hear from us in prayer. He wants us to bring them to him in honesty and trust. We can repeat our request to God but we should not assume that our persistence is rewarded because of a multitude of words. We have in Christ the greatest patterns of prayer. When we come to the Lord in prayer we should consider

how we are coming to God and trusting Him to lead us to a Kingdom centered life. Dear Friend what’s your prayer life like? The Morning message was delivered by Rev, Michael Wright of the Galilee Missionary Baptist Church where Rev.L.R.Davis serves as pastor His Message was entitled “Thanksgiving to a Father” Col.1:12-15.which was very appropriate for the upcoming Thanksgiving Day. We would hope that each of us will not only be thankful for those of our family but will seek in some way to make it a blessed day for those that are less fortunate than we are. We all know someone that is suffering during this recession who could use a helping hand, why not share your bountiful blessings with someone who could really use some help, reach out and be the answer to someone’s prayer. So from the entire Union Hope Church Family “HAPPy THANKSGIVING” Be Blessed

have no idea what’s missing in our society, but for some reason everything in sports we experience we try to proclaim it the best ever. Some of the leon Simon media just come out of college. Most are in late 30’s or early 40’s, either way they haven’t been here long enough to comment on best ever. Football season is just in the swing of things and yet there are some people declaring Green Bay the best team ever. Green Bay won Super Bowl last season, but they didn’t qualify for the play-off until the last game of regular season, and they had nothing to do with it. When the New york Giants lost to the Philadelphia. That put Green Bay in the play -off’s. Does that sound like the best ever?

page 8

Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay’s Quarterback is getting and awfully lot of support as the greatest ever, by some reporters that has yet to see the likes of Joe Montana, John Unitas, Bart Starr, Bobby Layne, etc. I’m not saying any of these guys are the greatest ever I’m saying unless you have seen them don’t judge them. The quarterback at Green Bay should be good, what else is there to do in Green Bay, but study film, workout, throw passes get my point. you are not going to go to a lot of Broadway shows, movie premieres, etc. in Green Bay, Wisconsin. This isn’t L. A. New york, Chicago. I guess you can tell I’m not a believer that God saved the best of everything for this generation. I believe that had Muhammad Ali stayed 23 yrs old he would still be heavy weight Champion. If Jimmie Brown, had stayed 23 he’d still be the Starting running back in Cleveland and in the Pro-Bowl. Had Carl Lewis stayed 23 he’d still be anchoring America’s sprint relay and win the 100 meters and 200. I believe had Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson stayed 23 yrs old that would be the all-star basketball

team. And Olympic champions. If Joe Montana was still 23 yrs old and played in Green Bay Aaron Rodgers would be on the bench as frustrated as he was sitting behind Brett Favre. Aaron Rodgers didn’t make the pro-bowl last year. Now he’s the greatest ever? What was he last year and who was the greatest ever last year. Just this year at the beginning of the year Tom Brady was the best ever now 3mo later it’s Aaron Rodgers. The best ever in the same year. Last year at this time of the year LaBron James was the best ever along with Koby Bryant. Neither won anything. If you visit a comedy club over the weekend and hear a great joke, laugh as hard as you can enjoy it to the fullest but don’t proclaim the comedian better than Richard Pryor. Everything that t urn you on is not necessary the best God have to offer. And don’t think he didn’t bless other generations with like entertainment.

The Other Penn State Cover-up: Death Threats Against Black Students By:By Brentin Mocks SPECIALTO ELITE NEWS

A

s news unravels around the grand jury report revealing charges against former Penn State football defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky for raping and sexually molesting underage boys, some former black Penn State students are now painfully reliving a scandal that occurred at their university ten years ago. In 2000, the year a janitor witnessed a boy younger than 13 (“Victim 8” in a grand jury report) “pinned against a wall” while Sandusky performed oral sex on him, black students and football players on Penn State’s campus began receiving hate mail. The hate mail sent to black students had nothing to do with Sandusky’s proclivities, but the two incidences shared something in common: both were ultimately covered up by the university, even as both chain of events grew worse. Sandusky went on to molest and possibly rape more boys, according to a grand jury report (Sandusky denies foul play), and hate mail against black students became death threats. Ultimately, a black man’s dead body was found by police near Penn State as one of the death threats said it would. And some black students had to attend their graduation the following May with bulletproof vests on in fear of their life. But few know about the death threats because Penn State and Joe Paterno were not willing to allow bad publicity to ruin the university’s image, say some of the black students at the center of the tragic events.

LaKeisha Wolf was president of Penn State’s Black Caucus ten years ago, and she received the lion’s share of life-threatening letters. Today, she watches the news about Sandusky’s rape charges, the firing of Joe Paterno and Penn State president Graham Spanier, and the student riots that ensued, and it takes her right back to her days dealing with the university. In fact, Wolf and other concerned black students met with Paterno back in 2001 because of information circulating that black football players, like thenquarterback Rashard Casey, had been receiving death threats. Wolf recalls Paterno as almost emotionless. “He didn’t necessarily blatantly show concern,” says Wolf. “He was just really composed -- kinda non-emotional I would say. It was like he would have had the same amount of energy and response whether we were talking about death threats or what was for lunch. It was just a nondescript kind of demeanor.” Paterno is known for his deadpan deliveries during press conferences after Penn State games, win or lose. But this wasn’t a game. Students were fearful for their lives. That year, Penn State was experiencing an unusual losing season – a big deal in the college franchise that spawned multiple national championships and undefeated seasons under Paterno’s 45-year reign. Much vitriol was aimed at Penn State’s black quarterback – also unusual in Penn State’s mostly white quarterbacked history – Casey, who along with losing games was arrested in the off-season for fighting a white cop, allegedly over the cop’s African American date. Casey was cleared of those charges, but even Paterno admitted that the quarterback remained the

target of hate mail. But Paterno wasn’t so moved to have Penn State confront the hostile climate. Assata Richards, who was a leader of the Village student movement to increase diversity initiatives at Penn State, was at the 2001 meeting with Wolf and Paterno and today still remembers the cold response he gave them about the death threats. “We asked him to talk to the players because we were concerned about their safety,” says Richards, “and he said in that meeting that he would never do anything to put the university in a bad light. So we said, ‘Then you are choosing the university over students lives.’” Wolf was chilled by Paterno’s response also. She says Paterno told them, “I’m only a football coach.” Says Wolf, “To me that said that even if he had specific knowledge of football players’or students’lives in danger that he wouldn’t allow that to risk Penn State’s image being tainted and that is something that has stuck in my mind for the last ten years.” Today, in the Sandusky case, too many details have been revealed that show Penn State officials acted more to cover up crimes than to report them. Whether that was to protect the university’s image or not will eventually come out in court. But the grand jury report shows that when a grad assistant, who we now know is assistant football coach Mike McQueary, reported in 2002 seeing Sandusky raping a ten-year-old boy (“Victim 2”) in a locker room shower, that officials never reported anything to the police. McQueary, who’s now on leave from the team, reported the rape to Joe Paterno who then reported it to senior vice president for finance and business Gary Schultz and now resigned president Graham Spanier. But no one reported to law authorities. Schultz testified that the allegations as heard from McQueary were “not that serious” and that he “had no indication that a crime had occurred.” These same people – Paterno, Spanier and Schultz – were the same officials involved in the case ten years ago when Wolf was the target of death threats. But Wolf said none of them nor the police ever questioned her about the letters she was receiving. Then one week in April, Daryl Lang, a reporter for Penn State’s Daily Collegian, received a death threat letter aimed at Wolf. It read: “daryl nigger lover lang, since you love niggers so much, … maybe you can do president wolf, a favor by delivering the enclosed letter to her.”

Little Known Black History

Ms. Bettye “Katt” Williams

page 12

Marlin “The Magician” Briscoe was born on September 10, 1945 in Oakland, California. “I attended a predominantly white school, the University of Omaha,” Briscoe said. “I never considered myself as a Black quarterback. I always considered myself as a quarterback. After making All-American, I just felt I had the ability to do the job

Not long before that, Wolf received a letter from an anonymous source that said “we are determined to rid this place of this black blight on our community. Those like you have been run off or killed.” The letter told Wolf to “have the authorities search mt nittany near the summit, north slope” for the body of a dead “young black buck.” A few days later, a the body of a black man was in fact found in the area. Because Penn State officials wouldn’t do anything to alert the student body, and Paterno seemed careless about threats to his players, Wolf, Richards and other black students took matters into their own hands. On April 21, the day of Penn State’s famous “Blue-White” game, Wolf and 40 other students stormed onto Penn State’s football field just before kickoff to draw attention to the racial hate problems – call it an early "Occupy Penn State" move. Cops apprehended 14 of them, but 26 made it to the center of the field, locked arms and sat down until police broke them up and carted them away. They were all arrested. Compare that to last week, where hundreds of students occupied downtown State College (where Penn State is located) and held a riot after Paterno was fired, taking down lamp posts, setting cars on fire and overturning a local news van. When Loop 21 contacted State College police to ask how many were arrested in that melee we were told that they “couldn’t tell us because an investigation was ongoing.”When Assata Richards looks at the Sandusky news, the university’s cover ups, and the students’ rioting protests she says she’s “not surprised at all.” News outlets, says Richards, “are reporting and saying things today that they said back then: ‘This sounds like a cover up,’ ‘Why weren’t more people notified?’ ‘Why weren’t parents notified?’ It’s scary for me because all of these institutional leaders are the same ones we remember so well and interacted with.” As for the riots, says Richards: “It’s so interesting because when I heard about Paterno being fired and how students responded, I’m thinking about when we were rallying around our issues and how we were arrested. We were not slapped on the wrist, but we were in no way doing anything harmful. We never destroyed property, but we were arrested for saying, ‘Hey something is happening, people are being harassed and threatened, and a person was killed.’ For that, we were treated as criminals.”

Dallas Skyline’s 41-31 area playoff victory over DeSoto By Randy Jennings (ESPN) SPECIAL TO ELITE NEWS

I

n front of a sellout crowd of 11,500 Saturday at Irving Schools Stadium, quite simply, Skyline converted. DeSoto did not. Once in each half, DeSoto (10-2) turned the ball over in its end of the field after failing on fourth down. Both gambles eventually resulted in Skyline touchdowns. Skyline (12-0) gambled, too, but was successful on all three of its attempts in the fourth quarter. The most important of the Raiders’ gambles, a fourth-and-2 at the DeSoto 7 with four minutes to play, produced the game-clinching touchdown when junior quarterback DeVante Kincade went over the right side of his line and scored untouched. “We wanted the revenge,’’ said Kincade, who was Skyline’s quarterback in last year‘s 38-0 area loss to DeSoto. “The guys that played in last year’s game have talked about it for 365 days. I kept hearing the game would come down to the quarterbacks and I wanted to prove I was the best one out there.’’ Kincade called his performance Saturday his best of the season. He finished 15-of-21 passing for 264 yards and two touchdowns and ran 23 times for 92 yards and three scores. DeSoto coach Claude Mathis didn’t second-guess the decisions to go for it on fourth down, saying he would do the same thing again given a chance. “I have that kind of confidence in our team,’’ Mathis said. “I know Skyline has a good defense, but we’ve been successful in those situations all season.’’ DeSoto pulled within 34-31 in the final 18 seconds of the third quarter and got the ball back by forcing a Skyline punt

with seven minutes remaining in the game. On fourth-and-1 at their own 29, Devin Rushing got the ball but was stopped for a loss of a yard by linebacker Nigel Robertson, who was a menace to the Eagles all night. “Nigel had a bad back and didn’t practice all week,’’ said Skyline coach Reginald Samples. “He played great. All of them did.’’ It took five plays for Skyline to turn Robertson’s stop into points. Sample shunned a field goal that could have increased the Raiders’ lead to six points, and it paid off when Kincade got into the end zone. DeSoto got the ball back once after that, but a hard hit by Robertson forced a fumble. Skyline pounced on it and proceeded to run out the clock. The animosity between the teams showed throughout the game, with numerous personal fouls and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties on both teams. It really came into focus how much the teams don’t like each other when, instead of shaking hands after the game, the teams had to be separated. “I’ve never seen anything like that in my life,’’ said DeSoto’s Mathis. “Skyline’s guys were coming across the field, waving and hollering at my guys, and Coach Samples was doing it, too. It shouldn’t have ended like that. That was two teams battling the entire game.’’ Said Samples: “We just got excited at the end. That’s two bitter rivals playing four years in a row in this round of the playoffs. These are the best two teams in the region, in my opinion. The kids know each other and things are said before the game. But I hate it that we didn’t shake hands. I’ve never had a team that didn’t shake hands after a game.’ Skyline will play Klein Oak in a Class 5A Division I regional playoff at 7 p.m. Saturday at Waco ISD Stadium.

alter D a y, 85, an educator, coach and living legend, passed away Monday, Nov. 14, 2011. Celebration of life: 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 21, at First United Methodist Church, 800 West 5th St., Fort Worth. The Rev. Ramon Smith of Morningside United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial: Laurel Land Memorial Park immediately following the celebration of life. Wake: 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Laurel Land Memorial Chapel of Fort Worth, visiting and remembering the life of Day, the educator, coach, husband and friend. short while before moving to Fort Worth in 1961 and serving as head coach at historic I.M. Terrell until 1968. Seeking change and a different challenge, but remaining with the Fort Worth ISD, he chose administration. Day served as vice principal and later principal of I.M. Terrell High School. At the administration building, he served as assistant director of secondary education and then director of pupil personnel. His final service to Fort Worth ISD was as principal of O.D. Wyatt High School until his retirement in 1986. After his retirement, writing and research became his new interest. Day researched and wrote the untold story of successful black coaches and the achievements of their teams prior to integration using the theme, “Remembering the Past with Pride.” Remembering his love: Wife of 60 years, Jewel Day; nieces, Georgia Thomas, Daphne Moss (Dave), Beverly Humphery (Charles), Joyce young, Deidre Summers (James), Carolyn Hausey (Darren), Vicki Foster (Johnie), and Melonie Bond (Jerry); nephews, Leon Massey (Ethel), Ronald Sanford, Dwight Sanford, Tom Sanford, and David Sanford; many great-nieces and great-nephews.
