CELEBRATING 52 YEARS OF SERVING THE CHURCH AND COMMUNITY

The Republicans

FOUNDING THOUGHTS

By William “Bill Blair Elite News Founder

The Clinton Speech Last week during the Democratic National Convention former President William Jefferson Clinton spoke to the world concerning why he supported the reelection of President Barack Obama. It was a moving speech that more than likely ensured the President’s victory come November 6th. Many people in the undecided President Bill Clinton voting community listen to Clinton, despite the error that he made in his personal life while serving in the oval office, none of us are perfect, and he is one of the greatest presidents this nation has ever had. Clinton spoke passionately about the performance that President Obama has given the nation and about the character of the President. He said that it would be a disaster for the nation to elect Governor Romney because he is not prepared to lead the world’s greatest supervisor and that he would gut the programs that have helped people in this country and their children. Clinton pointed out that the Republican economic policy would lead to additional national debt, destroy programs that assist the nation’s poor and eliminate the possibility of poor and lower middle class children of improving their lives. He said that the Republicans believed that government did not have a responsibility to lift people, but wanted to abandon them in the pits of poverty. During his speech, Clinton informed his audience that America was on the incline and that President Obama was the individual who could best continue to lead the nation. He said that a vote for Romney was in fact a dangerous vote. He characterized him as being out of step with the average citizen in this country and would serve the very wealthy. At the very end of the speech, former President Clinton and President Obama appeared on stage together to a thunderous applause. They are perhaps the two most admired individuals in the Democratic Party in the last half century. I will cast my vote for President Obama. I have voted in many elections and I have always voted the issues and not the person. I do not intend to change my course of conduct this time. There were times during his administration that I disagreed with President Clinton. But I could not be more in agreement with him now. We must reelect President Obama. Any other action would be a disaster for our country and for the world. September 14, 2012

CELEBRATING 52 YEARS OF SERVING THE CHURCH AND COMMUNITY

Around the Metroplex

Heartline Ministries By Lorie Blair Elite News Staff

By Ray Williams PWT

From a little house in Oak Cliff to 9755 East R.L. Thornton Fwy. Dallas, Texas under the leadership of Pastor Victor Beck this church has made a big move to be in position to grow with the needs of the community and its members, we had a few stops on the way but after all we made it with God’s Blessing. HeartLine Ministries moved to its new to its new location a little over five months ago and growth seems to be in step with all that is going on, last Sunday we baptized over forty

people. If you are looking for a new church home and need to hear the word from the Bible stop in, you will be glad you did so, greetings from the front door to the pulpit. Pastor Beck joined Calvary Temple under Bishop Clifford Frazier and in 1997 he was promoted to pastor and the rest is history. We do not have a lot of things some of the mega churches have but what little we have we are willing to share with you and your family, come visit with us. Pastor Beck is a product of the recently St. James Baptist Church of Odessa, Texas where he attended church with his grandmother Bernice Littleton.

On August 30, 2012, a memo from Dallas Independent School District (DISD) new superintendent Mike Miles was sent out addressing a serious issue for DISD sports programs. DISD Superintendent Michael Miles It seems there has been the practice where federal dollars are being used for coaches to work part of the day as an “extra-curricular coach.” After launching his own internal investigation Miles has uncovered 28 coaches at 18 schools are in violation with one of the schools being Kimball. Per the memo Miles has put an immediate stop to this practice, will require all coaches to be certified and

work a full day in the classroom prior to coaching. Additional changes to board policy have allowed the DISD to increase the number of teacher’s contracts that will not be renewed this year. This increase is not an answer to budget reductions but a lack of teacher quality. There are 259 teachers who will not be returning this year. Trustee Edwin Flores has stated that there is the support of the good teachers left who want to work with other good teachers. Rena Hona, President of the Dallas American Federation of Teacher Alliance feels that this move will drive out good teachers. That the increase in the non renewals is a way to replace higher paid teachers with younger less paid ones. Two more people have died from complications of the West Nile virus this week increasing the numbers who have died to 6 in Tarrant County and 15 in Dallas County. There have been 252

cases of West Nile virus diagnosed in Tarrant County, 347 in Dallas County, 157 in Denton County and 68 in Collin County. A year ago Franklin Davis was arrested for the sexual assault of Shania Gray, a minor. As they prepared to go to trial Franklin Davis set up a Facebook account befriending Shania to gather information as to what she would say at trial. After posing as an interested friend Davis coaxed Gray to meet him. Once Gray got in the car Davis took Gray to Campion Trail telling her he was only wanting to discuss the trial with her. Once they reached the banks of the Trinity River he shot Gray twice pulled her out of the water and stood on her neck until she stopped breathing. Once arrested Davis confessed to what he had done and is now in jail charged with capital murder. He has a 2 million dollar bond.

PHOTO OF THE PAST

A 1970 D.A.R.T. Bus September 14, 2012

Welcome to the weekend, baaaby! Last Friday my Mom, Opal Crawford passed, after living with our family for the past two years. Mom, like many senior citizens of today suffered Dementia/Alzheimers. We were blessed to have her with us, thru all the ups and downs of this illness. If you are going thru with a family member in a similar situation, you can get help at www.alz.org and http://www.caring.com/ steps-stages/alzheimers I was reflecting on having my Mom here and her being gone when this came to mind: "The house seems so empty. No one has to get "Granny" ready for bed....There is no fussing to avoid a last trip to the bathroom....No one is getting pinched for anything...The house is soooo quiet tonight...We've reminisced up a storm with more to come, I'm sure. Yet there is no one who needed to be fed

dinner this evening. No one wanted to share an ice cold Pepsi with us. No one has to figure out who gets up for a 2am emergency...... Yes, the house is quiet tonight"! The house has been quiet for a week now, but her sparkling personality, life success and zest for live on. If we were to discuss Opal Crawford, my Mom, we could chat about how when we were poor she'd give me 4 of the 6 chicken wings and most of the can of cream style corn she'd sent me to the store to purchase. I could reflect on her successful rise from behind the counter girl at Leader Cleaner's to managing 43 stores on Chicago's West Side...Maybe even talk about Mom going back to college at 48 and grabbing straight'A's or leaving all she knew from 40 plus years in the windy city to move back to tiny Texarkana and care for her ailing

mother Lucille Tyler! Some would mention her Phyllis Hyman like contralto voice that garnered a college scholarship at Huston Tillotson in the 1940's. Some might chat about her eye for design and fashion, which could have been her career field. If it was just me, I'd talk about the incredible amount of common sense and love that my Mom shared with whomever she came in contact with! So, yes, the house feels empty, but in my heart, I know it's not...SO many of the things she was, I am and will be. Rest in peace my dear, sweet, brilliant m o t h e r. I f y o u w e r e b o r n t h i s week...Happy Birthday to YOU and Celebs: Lola Falana 69, Adam Sandler 46 and Michelle Williams is 32. Thanks for Rollin With A Brotha in The Elite News.

Speaking Hurtful Words By Geraldine Davidson- Hooker

The human tongue can do so much damage. It can ruin friendships, cause misunderstandings, put a wall between brothers and sisters. We have all been guilty of saying hurtful things. We must be ever mindful that what we say can damage and cause divisions – and therefore not to speak critically. A lot of what we say is probably best left unsaid. We have also been hurt by hurtful words – some more than others. In many cases the damage is so deep that it takes a long time to heal – in some cases people never heal. But we know that if we belong to Jesus, He can heal us as we surrender it to Him. Nothing is impossible for Him to heal – if we allow Him too. There are so many Adults carrying around hurts from childhood ‘verbal abuse’. We need to deal with these things. The hurt gets buried deep, but God has a way of bringing it to the surface.

It’s painful, but needful to truly be healed and set free from the affects of negative, hateful words. The saying ‘Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me’, is not true, and in-fact it’s quite the opposite. Bones can heal a whole lot faster than words spoken over us. If you are struggling with the pain of having negative, abusive and hurtful words spoken over you – will you give it over to God today? Let Him heal you and place His love in your heart towards those that have hurt you. Forgive them and let it go. I know often it can come back echoing in our minds – but refuse to listen. One helpful thing I’ve been realizing lately is to find out from the word of God, what God thinks of me. Meditate on Scriptures about God’s love for us, that we are Sons and Daughters of the most high God (Ephesians 1:4-5; Romans 8:14-17), Kings and Priests (1 Peter 2:9-10), and so on. Ask God to show you and direct you to scriptures like these. Meditate and memorize them until you believe it – and not doubt your importance and significance to God. Because you are important t o G o d . Yo u a r e H i s precious child – the ‘Apple of His eye’. (Zechariah 2:8).

Cornerstone Community Development Corp. Giving Day

u

Cornerstone is excited that the Cornerstone Community Development Corporation, Inc. has an opportunity to participate in this year’s 2012 North Texas Giving Day. The fourth annual North Texas Giving Day will be on September 13, 2012. This year, donations can be received nearly around the clock, from 7:00 am until midnight. North Texas Giving Day was established so that all donations of $25 or more made specifically to the Cornerstone Community Development Corp are made via www.DonorBridgeTX.org which will be multiplied from a pool of $1 million dollars in challenge funds. This will of course allow gifts provided to be matched by the Communities Foundation of Texas for a greater impact in the neighborhood.

Because of Cornerstone’s commitment to utilize a large number of dedicated volunteers for services in the South Dallas/ Fair Park community, all donated proceeds are utilized in direct support to provide food, clothing, shelter, medical, dental care, and other resources to those in need.
