WELCOME NOTES

WELCOME TO THE

33rd Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show W e are delighted to welcome you to Sanctuary Cove for the 2022 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS). The Southern Hemisphere’s premier marine event is back for another blockbuster year with more exhibitors, our biggest ever display on water, and more immersive experiences that highlight the growing appeal of the recreational boating lifestyle. After a record-breaking 2021 show that attracted more than 51,000 visitors, SCIBS is rolling out the red carpet with a showstopping lineup of over 300 exhibitors showcasing more than 600 boats and 1000 marine products across four action-packed days. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned showgoer, you can experience everything from the latest marine gadgets and must-have technology to a massive display of trailer boats and superyachts all in one stunning waterfront location. As one of the first major events on the international boat show calendar, SCIBS is the place to see a raft of global product launches and Australian premieres of new models from industry-leading brands and retailers in the Gold Coast hub of marine manufacturing. Our owner, Mulpha Australia, is firmly committed to the marine industry and continues to invest in developing assets including 48 new, purpose-built undercover berths — a Southern Hemisphere first — after a $10 million expansion to the Sanctuary

Cove Superyacht Marina. After a successful debut in 2021, The Lagoon Lounge ups the ante with an enhanced luxury offering, including an exclusive VIP ticket to enjoy the SCIBS experience in a stylish space overlooking the new Superyacht Marina and iconic Lagoon Pool at InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort. The 5-star InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort returns as our 2022 Hospitality Partner, offering a smorgasbord of delectable cuisine, free-flowing champagne, and premium beverages at The Lagoon Lounge. SCIBS 2022 also marks a momentous milestone with Major Sponsor Bentley Brisbane & Gold Coast. Celebrating a decade-long association with the Show, four custom cars have been specially commissioned for the occasion. Riding the wave of increased interest in recreational boating in Australia, SCIBS showcases the accessible appeal of the marine lifestyle with something for everyone, from adrenaline-fuelled watercraft, fishing vessels, and powerboats right up to superyachts and sailing catamarans. A non-stop entertainment programme promises plenty of family fun with fishing demonstrations and competitions, cooking shows, live music, roving street performers, delicious food, vibrant bars, and a dedicated kids zone. Presented by Mulpha Events, SCIBS is where ‘the marine business does business’

and its success is a reflection of the buoyant recreational boating industry. We continue to demonstrate our unwavering commitment and dedication to the events and marine industry, hosting more than 200 industry leaders at the Australian Superyacht, Marine Export & Commercial Marine Industry (ASMEX) Conference at the InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort immediately preceding SCIBS. Mulpha Events is proud to partner with the Boating Industry Association (BIA) to deliver the much anticipated 53rd Sydney International Boat Show (SIBS) in 2022 after a two-year hiatus, injecting the fiveday event with a refreshed outlook and new experiences. Again, this year we are sincerely grateful for the commitment from our many sponsors and partners, including Major Sponsor Bentley Brisbane & Gold Coast, Hospitality Partner InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort, the Queensland Government, and Major Events Gold Coast who have all supported the show for many years. The involvement of our sponsors and partners is vital to the success of the show. The SCIBS team has been working tirelessly behind the scenes to create a bestin-class boating lifestyle experience and we can’t wait to share it with our visitors and exhibitors. From the entire SCIBS team, we wish our exhibitors every success this year, and for our Boat Show visitors, enjoy your SCIBS adventure for 2022.

WELCOME NOTES

MESSAGE FROM THE

Premier of Queensland W elcome to the 2022 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. Queensland is proud to host one of the biggest and most important marine industry events in the world. The Sunshine State offers the perfect platform for business and pleasure with easy access to the ocean, spectacular waterways, outstanding berthing options, and our wonderful climate. The Gold Coast’s facilities attract hundreds of millions of dollars of craft, technology, and other seafaring products alongside approximately 600 boats exhibited on land and water, and a wonderful program of entertainment. This is why last year’s boat show attracted a record 51,832 visitors and injected hundreds of millions of dollars into southeast Queensland, accelerating our economic recovery from COVID-19 and supporting jobs for Queenslanders.

20

Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2022

Our marine capability was enhanced in February this year with the opening of the new superyacht berth at the Southport Yacht Club, supported by the Queensland Government’s $2.87 million contribution. This is one of the biggest superyacht berthing facilities in the country and represents another step on the path towards Queensland being recognised as the AsiaPacific region’s key superyacht hub by 2023. Across Queensland, superyacht activity has the combined potential to contribute more than $2 billion to our economy and to support more than 16,000 full-time equivalent jobs by 2025. International superyacht visits during the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games are estimated to provide an economic lift of $1.8 billion on the Australian economy, with the majority of this expenditure occurring in Queensland. Brisbane 2032 is a gamechanger for

Queensland’s economy and provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to market our State as a global destination and place to do business. It will create opportunities to grow our economy through increased trade and by positioning Queensland as a tourism hub in the Asia-Pacific region. There are many outstanding tourism experiences here, so I hope you take the time to explore beautiful Queensland during and after the show. MESSAGE FROM THE

Mayor of Gold Coast T he Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show remains one of the premier events in our city. Over the past decade, the Gold Coast has worked hard to broaden its economy so we are not solely reliant on the traditional economic pillars of tourism and construction. New investment in film, education, the marine industry, sports science, and medical research has seen our economy grow from a GRP (Gross Regional Product) of $29.87 billion in 2012, to $39.12 billion today. Importantly, this has helped us manage changes to economic conditions, whether domestically or on a global stage. As Mayor, I appreciate the immense investment being made in the marine sector by industry leaders across all fields —

22

Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2022

manufacturing, supply, servicing, logistics, export, marine IT, and warehousing. Council has recently partnered with the State Government to open a superyacht facility at Southport Yacht Club. I’m confident we will continue to expand opportunities for superyachts as we countdown to the 2032 Olympics. Equally, we must ensure dredging programs for our majestic Broadwater and Coomera River are maintained so access to these waterways is never an issue. The boat show is about connecting people who love watercraft with those who know the industry. That’s what makes the show such an international event. Free entry for youth under 16, giveaways, competitions, and daily demonstrations of products from the latest fishing gear to jet

skis ensures the show appeals to the masses — not just discerning boat enthusiasts seeking out their next mega yacht. I applaud sponsors, organisers, and exhibitors for ensuring the show remains true to its roots — the family market — while also attracting interest from across the globe. Our city has the highest private watercraft registration per capita in Australia, and for good reason. I encourage everyone making their way to Sanctuary Cove this May to spend a few extra days in our great city. Stay longer, play more, relax, and enjoy everything about the Goldie and its surrounds. See you waterside this May.

Tom Tate Mayor

FLEMING At this year’s Show, Fleming Yachts Australia is displaying a beautiful Fleming 58 (F58). Since its launch in 2013, the F58 model has become a popular choice, with 36 Fleming 58s currently cruising the world. Created to fill the gap between the F55 and F65, she was drawn by Norman R Wright & Sons in Brisbane. Chosen for their expertise in designing semi-displacement motor cruiser hulls, they have also remained sympathetic to the original Fleming design, featuring the high attention to detail and quality of

build that all Fleming models are renowned for. The F58 on display boasts a full-width master cabin below the pilothouse and a full headroom engine room. In addition, the standard specification list contains a multitude of items that would be options with most other builders. These include items such as stabilisers, thrusters, twin anchor winches, davit for tender and much more. Super smooth and quiet at all RPM even when shifting gears, the F58 is true luxury. Featuring the latest in technology, she has full digital switching and ship monitoring via the ‘Fleming First Mate’ by Böning, a full

array of the newest Raymarine navigational equipment, Twin Disc EJS/EPS Joystick Control with the popular Position Hold feature in addition to traditional electronic throttle and gear levers. MARITIMO TO SHOWCASE THREE GLOBAL LAUNCHES Leading Australian luxury motoryacht manufacturer Maritimo, which has continued to build on the momentum of its new model development strategy from 2021, has big plans for this year’s SCIBS — there will be no fewer than three global launches forming part of a six-vessel showcase to highlight the diversity and world-leading model range proudly carrying the Maritimo brand. Maritimo’s lead designer, Tom Barry-Cotter, said SCIBS 2022 would be one of the most exciting displays in recent memory for the Australian manufacturer. “SCIBS 2022 will see show attendees from Europe, Asia and the Americas welcomed back for the first time since the 2019 global pandemic and travel restrictions,” he said.

32

Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2022

“We are excited to potentially be welcoming both our overseas sales and service network as well as our owners from around the globe back to our home show and the home of Maritimo. Being our home show, we always have something exciting planned for SCIBS, and this year will certainly be no exception.” The Maritimo on water display will see the global launch of the M600 Offshore, S600 Offshore, and the M60. The three Maritimo global launches will be complemented by the M55 Flybridge Motor Yacht, the S55 Sedan Motor Yacht and the X50 Sport Yacht. Barry-Cotter said the Maritimo on water display would be in its usual high-profile position at the head of F-Arm, just east of the Maritimo Sales and Marketing suite.

AT THE MARINA

A full program of VIP events is planned, starting with a briefing for national and international media on Thursday morning and then social functions on both Friday and Saturday nights for invited VIP guests. “At the start of 2021 we announced a significant expansion of our model range with new vessels in our M-Series Flybridge, our S-Series Sedan and the Offshore Series categories and this year’s SCIBS sees us deliver on those announcements,” he said. The S75 Sedan Motor Yacht is scheduled for its Global Launch in late 2022. Barry-Cotter said, “The M75 and S75 motoryachts draw from a wealth of feedback from our owners all over the world, spanning more than two years of concept development and planning. Being able to cruise further and more confidently is the very essence of what Maritimo is about.” He said Maritimo was in its strongest position in the company’s history, with orders on some of the new models now stretching into 2025, the company’s workforce being expanded and its dealer partner network internationally being strengthened to bolster future demand in varied overseas markets. He said further exciting company announcements were planned during 2022. Visit maritimo.com.au.

WINDCRAFT PRESENTS THE FJORD 38 XPRESS From cutting-edge building design to edgy psychological thrillers, we can’t seem to get enough of the Scandinavian focus on clean, simple lines, minimalism, and functionality that never sacrifices beauty. Fjord has exemplified this ethos since the superb designs of Jan Linge took the boating world by storm in the ‘60s. That legacy is present across the entire Fjord six model range from 38 to 53 feet. Each Fjord shares signature features such as a nearly vertical plumb bow, high freeboard, bold, horizontal sheer line, frameless windshield, a spacious flat deck layout and an open transom. Fjords offer spectacular one-level designs with highquality Scandinavian influenced interiors and are certain to impress.

The Fjord 38 Xpress will occupy a prominent space on the Windcraft stand at this year’s SCIBS. The 38 Xpress combines speed, comfort and versatility. The standard engine setup of two 300hp Mercury Verados delivers 38 knots, while twin 350hp Verados see the 38 Xpress achieve an exhilarating 43 knots. Outboard engines have the advantages of good low-speed manoeuvrability, fuel economy and ensuring access to shallow waters and beaches, thanks to a maximum draft of 0.94. To enjoy the Fjord’s entertainer mode, smart options abound; the aft cockpit lounge has a height-adjustable table for eight that converts to a sun lounge, creating the ambience of a stylish sea terrace. An outdoor galley with wet bar, grill and fridge located behind the 38 Xpress’s steering console rises to all catering requirements. Biminis stretching forward over the bow lounge and

over the aft deck can be unfurled from the T-Top, shading the entire length of the boat — a necessity in Australian conditions. The carbon/fibre T-Top is an engineering feat in own right, boasting ambient lightning and dark tinted skylights. From here it’s just a few steps down to the inviting lower deck accommodations comprising a master cabin with double berth, fridge and storage. There’s also a fully equipped head with handheld shower, the kind of amenity setting the Fjord 38 Xpress apart in this class of boat. Those impressed by the Fjord 38 Xpress but hoping for a little more space can take heart that Windcraft, the exclusive importer of Fjord into Australia, has the Fjord 41 XL on the way with a July arrival timeframe. Find the Fjord 38 Xpress at the Windcraft stand at Pier F on the Marina.

WINDCRAFT PRESENTS HANSE YACHTS Hanse sailing yachts are spacious, strongly built family cruisers with signature easy sailing characteristics and superior levels of comfort. German manufactured with all the efficiency and technical precision that implies, Hanse sets the bar extremely high in terms of quality, engineering and manageability in a production yacht.

SCHAEFER YACHTS Founded in 1992 by yacht designer Márcio Schaefer, Schaefer Yachts builds world-class luxury sport yachts up to 25 metres in length. In late 2016, Schaefer signed an ongoing styling agreement with Italian design studio, Pininfarina, famous for designing some of the world’s most beautiful Ferrari cars and in 2018 released an intriguing ‘wheel-less’, joystick-only 580 model. The company employs more than 1000 specialists and uses state-of-the-art production equipment, exemplified by a giant Bermaq SG-22 computer-controlled milling machine. This five-axis machine produces precision boat plugs, from which highly accurate moulds are made. The shipyard also uses vinyl ester resins in state-of-the-art vacuum infusion equipment, which makes the boats lighter and more robust than polyester construction. Of the ten model Hanse ranging from 31 to 69 feet, four will be on display at this year’s show. Their Judel-Vrolijk designs feature beamy hull lines with clean deck profiles. Coachroofs are sleek while high topsides result in roomy interiors. The Hanse 315 is a compact yacht with big boat features and is a popular choice for couples or young families. Like all Hanse yachts, a self-tacking jib makes shorthanded sailing either solo or two-up a smooth operation, as all halyards and sheets are led back to the cockpit. The 40-to-50-foot category is the most crowded in the sailing market and Windcraft will have two exceptional Hanse models, the H418 and a H458 at Sanctuary Cove. The Hanse 575 will be the flagship of this year’s Hanse display and is a great boat for owners who are interested in a wide variety of sailing. From round-the-world cruising rallies to coastal-cruising adventures with family and friends. The 575 has no trouble accommodating two or even three couples and their children, yet one or two capable sailors can manage the boat in almost any conditions. To inspect any or all of the Hanse models at Sanctuary Cove head to the Windcraft stand at Pier F on the Marina. You can find more info on the Hanse brand at windcraftyachts.com

The first model has landed in Australia and will be on display at SCIBS 2022. RYCK is an exciting new range of luxury sports day boats that combine all the versatility of a RIB with high quality appointments usually found on luxury tenders. Its versatility means it’s capable of adapting to a wide variety of uses as family entertainer, fast tender, adventure sports day boat or premium fishing platform. The 280’s lines come from the pen of renowned UK yacht designer Bill Dixon. His two-stepped hull mixes air in with the water passing under the boat to cut down on drag. Combined with a reverse bow, this provides an exceptionally smooth, dry ride in all conditions. Out on the water, performance is exhilarating with a top speed of more than 40 knots coupled with the most powerful of three Mercury Verado engine packages available, ranging from to 250hp to 350hp.

FEATURE: SANCTUARY COVE LIVING — LAND

SANCTUARY COVE LAND SALES HIT $50 MILLION

S

anctuary Cove, Australia’s leading master-planned community, has led the renaissance of waterfront living on the northern Gold Coast for more than 30 years. The past year highlighted the increasing appeal of the growing community, with Sanctuary Cove achieving a record $50 million in developer land sales as local and interstate buyers swooped on available waterfront and dry lots that are becoming increasingly scarce on Hope Island. As well as new developer sales, was a record-breaking $12.8 million transaction for a resale waterfront block that notched up another milestone in the prestigious community’s performance. While there is limited stock currently on the market, Sanctuary Cove is offering dry lots from $895,000 and marina-view lots from $1.2 million which are positioned well for value-conscious buyers. A local Sanctuary Cove couple outlaid the $12.8 million for the supreme waterfront block in one of Sanctuary Cove’s most prestigious streets, where home sales recently passed $10 million. The land was previously sold for $8.4 million in 2015, with the new owners looking to build a sprawling three level

home capturing 270-degree views north and south to Surfers Paradise across the 128m waterfront block. Sanctuary Cove property has enjoyed significant capital growth over the past two years, driven by demand from local and interstate buyers. John Hughes, the General Manager of Sales for Mulpha Sanctuary Cove, said buyers continue to see unrivalled value in Sanctuary Cove, supported by an exceptional array of amenities at their doorstep with an unparalleled value proposition around the lifestyle achievable in the community. “It really has been the perfect storm with local buyers jumping in knowing full well the zealous appetite from interstate purchases for quality land offerings within one of Australia’s premier and most iconic resort communities,” said Mr Hughes. “As a result, we are seeing the records topple and land prices increase as local, interstate and some overseas buyers seek to become part of a safe, secure and aspirational resort community without peer. “The value for product at Sanctuary Cove is just unmatched, supported by an exceptional array of lifestyle amenities at their doorstep.” “Our community is absolutely thriving as a

result of the prosperous demand, and we’re witnessing unprecedented property sales as the affluent seek their slice of unrivalled prestigious living. “Sanctuary Cove remains a beacon for the well-heeled, and with no end in sight to interstate migration to the Gold Coast, I believe this reputation will only be strengthened now that state and territory and international borders re-open.” Mr Hughes said buyers of new properties at Sanctuary Cove have included a mix of south-east Queensland locals as well as interstate buyers. “Over the past two years, a significantly high number of local buyers have dominated our sales, as witnessed with the most recent record-breaking land sale,” he said. “We’re now seeing more interstate buyers coming through at the moment following the free movement of people across state borders. “Many buyers are drawn by the compelling value that Sanctuary Cove still offers, especially within the context of a masterplanned resort community. The value difference has been a key driver of buyer activity at Sanctuary Cove for some time and this is likely to continue.

the second stage of Harbour One, comprising 24 apartments including 18 lower-floor releases. The popularity of the development has seen 30 per cent of residences in the second stage already sold. The final stage of eight luxurious townhouses is yet to be released to the market. John Hughes, the General Manager of Sales for Mulpha Sanctuary Cove, says these residences will be equally well received by the market. “Since unveiling Harbour One, we have received an incredible response from buyers who have been inspired by the amazing design and location of this exclusive range of residences,” said Mr Hughes. “Buyers looking for that strong sense of community have flocked to Harbour One because its offers Sanctuary Cove village

living with waterfront amenity just lapping at their doorstep. It’s a very rare offering that has resonated with buyers who are looking for relaxed yet sophisticated waterfront living within easy reach of the village.” Harbour One has appealed to a broad range of buyers with an exceptionally strong local buyer uptake and extensive inquiries received from buyers planning to relocate from interstate. Harbour One, set over four levels, delivers a refined exterior that features a blend of natural stone and concrete, with carved building edges adding a sense of movement and articulation, all enhanced by crisp edges and fine lines. The latest addition to Sanctuary Cove’s luxe residential offering will deliver a collection of new apartments in three-bedroom and

The master ensuite will have an elegant freestanding bath. All apartments will be fitted with colourscreen video intercom and a panic button connected directly with Sanctuary Cove security. Each Harbour One apartment will have spaces for two cars, as well the opportunity to secure additional buggy parking which has become so popular with residents at Sanctuary Cove. Harbour One has been designed to complement the existing marine village with a layout that connects directly to the active boat harbour and all it has to offer with a host of

retail, dining and entertainment facilities. Access to the village will be enhanced by a travertine boardwalk through lush subtropical landscaping setting, with private pathways leading to individual residences. This has been designed to provide residents with a curated arrival sequence that weaves towards the water’s edge. Construction of Harbour One is due to commence shortly after Mulpha Sanctuary Cove secured award-winning Gold Coast builder Tomkins Constructions to bring the project to fruition. Harbour One is expected to be completed and ready for its first residents in the first quarter of 2024. Sanctuary Cove is Australia’s largest and most prestigious master-planned community, home to some of the most diverse waterfront, golf course and parkside residential house and land options. It is one of the last remaining developments in Australia that offers an exemption from Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) restrictions, allowing overseas buyers to invest in vacant land without assessment. Featuring two 18-hole championship golf courses, a 303-berth marina, a five-star InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort with its own lagoon-style beach, Sanctuary Cove residents also enjoy access to a Country Club including fitness centre, tennis courts and swimming pool. FEATURE: SANCTUARY COVE LIVING — HORIZON

EXCLUSIVE HORIZON RESIDENCES OFFER AN ELEVATED LIFESTYLE AT SANCTUARY COVE

A

new level of residential excellence is taking shape at Sanctuary Cove following the release of a prestigious collection of luxury homes in an elevated precinct within the master-planned community. Aptly named Horizon, it comprises 23 freestanding homes designed by award-winning architect Jarred Poole to deliver an elevated feeling of serenity and luxury. Once occupied by a single residence that hosted some of Hollywood’s biggest names, the 1.3ha Horizon site, formerly known as Spyglass Hill, is arguably one of the most exclusive locations within Sanctuary Cove. The beautifully appointed homes are being sold as completed house-and-land packages delivered by Mulpha Sanctuary Cove’s

renowned dedication to quality. The homes come in three and four-bedroom designs, each with their own plunge pool, while there is also a limited selection of duplexes. With prices starting from $1.325 million, the Horizon collection has struck a chord with local buyers who have bought all seven of the homes released so far — or almost a third of the residences planned for the precinct. “Most of the buyers are true locals, from the northern Gold Coast, which speaks volumes for the value proposition that Horizon represents,” said John Hughes, the General Manager of Sales for Mulpha Sanctuary Cove. “The elevated position, the beautiful designs and the hilltop location all combine to create a unique, secluded enclave within Sanctuary Cove.”

Horizon is among the increasingly rare houseand-land releases at Sanctuary Cove, which last year achieved a record $50 million in land sales led by local and interstate buyers. This is on top of more than $100 million in sales of existing homes within the master-planned community. The Horizon precinct was carefully crafted following an amalgamation by Mulpha Sanctuary Cove of two significant lots located in Spyglass Hill Court. The redesign of the site led to the creation of a new entry point at Horizon Court, which hosts most of the new homes in the precinct. Mr Hughes said the elevated location of Horizon is particularly appealing to buyers. “Elevated sites typically appreciate in value at a faster rate than other sites, and buyers have identified this as a significant advantage at

FEATURE: SANCTUARY COVE LIVING — HORIZON Horizon,” he said. “Some of the homes also offer views which further enhance the offering.” Mr Poole, a Gold Coast-based architect with an extensive portfolio of luxurious residential designs across Australia, created Horizon’s homes to be thoughtful and considered spaces where people want to live. “At the core of our concept for Horizon was the desire to achieve a sense of place by creating a sustainable, contemporary design palette that directly responds to its unique Sanctuary Cove setting,” said Mr Poole. Simple elements are delivered with maximum impact, imparting a genuine sense of home and seamless flow of space, ensuring comfortable and stylish living. The architect-designed homes within the Horizon precinct all feature generous 2.7m ceiling heights, with interiors designed to maximise usable space, improve privacy and reduce sound transmission. Rooms are generously sized and designed to be easily furnished, while cool and clean porcelain tiling is used throughout the living areas, kitchen and bathrooms. Living areas

and bedrooms are protected from the elements and achieve added privacy through block-out roller blinds. They also feature multi-zone airconditioning. European appliances complement the chef ’s style kitchen, including a 900mm SMEG induction cooktop and oven, dishwasher, and ducted rangehood. Among the quality finishes are porcelain-tile splashback, stone benchtops, and polyurethane joinery with a stainless-steel double sink and a Villeroy & Boch pull-out hose on mixer. The ensuite bathroom has a spacious freestanding bathtub, with quality finishes include porcelain wall and floor tiles, stone benchtop, brushed nickel Villeroy & Boch tapware, and ceramic basin. The ensuite has a frameless glass shower screen with a chrome showerhead on a rail, while strip lighting enhances visibility at the vanity. Some of the homes also have the added convenience of a two-person lift for ease of movements between floors at the push of a button. The outdoor patio blends seamlessly with the

interior living spaces, and it is just a short step away from a mosaic-tiled 5200L semi-recessed circular plunge pool which is the centrepiece of the backyard retreat. Homes feature the clean lines of Colourbond roofing which also comes complete with solar panels. The two-car garage is complemented by an undercover golf buggy space. All residences enjoy a back-to-base security system and Sanctuary Cove’s dedicated 24-hour security service. The dedication to quality with Horizon’s collection of exclusive residences reflects Mulpha’s ongoing commitment to creating Australia’s largest and most prestigious masterplanned community, Sanctuary Cove, over more than 25 years. The community offers the most diverse waterfront, golf course and parkside residential house and land options available on the Gold Coast, with the Horizon precinct among the latest to find favour with lifestyle homebuyers.

ulpha Australia, owner of InterContinental Hayman Island Resort, has released a limited number of ultra-luxury villas in the idyllic tropical surrounds of Hayman Island on the Great Barrier Reef. Designed to deliver an extended escape for residents, Hayman Estates comprises a gated offering of 21 elite private villas offering spectacular views of the Whitsundays combined with Hayman’s resort lifestyle. Designed by internationally acclaimed architect Kerry Hill, the homes are priced from $7.7 million and, if desired, can be included in the rental pool of the existing InterContinental Hayman Island Resort. Hayman Estates is limited to a total of

21 residences with six residences having been completed in prior years. At the time of publication, two homes have been sold, another is under contract, while three recently completed residences are available for sale. The limited release comes on the heels of a spectacular $150 million refurbishment of the resort which has been recognised by the annual HM Awards as Australia’s best holiday resort. Hayman Estates offers unrivalled privacy and stunning views of pristine Whitsunday waterways within easy walking distance of the prestigious Hayman InterContinental resort, restaurants, pool, health spa, and gymnasium alongside leisure and marina facilities. “The Whitsundays and Great Barrier Reef

regions offer an unmatched lifestyle with direct airline access to the major Australian east coast capital cities, making it ideal for people to use as either a residential base or a holiday investment property” said Mulpha General Manager of Sales, John Hughes. “These competitively priced villas offer exceptional design quality, value, and the ultimate in tropical elegance. Once sold, there will be no further similar villas included within the Hayman Island masterplan being surrounded by World Heritage national park.” Owners will have the option for private exclusive use or the option of adding their property to the luxury hotel pool for domestic and international guests seeking a private retreat with all resort services.

Hayman is expected to benefit from solid domestic market demand and a strong resurgence in international demand for luxury Australian resorts as international tourism gathers momentum with the opening of Australia’s borders earlier this year. Mr Hughes says Hayman Estates is tapping into continued demand for luxury lifestyle properties in premium Queensland locations. “The recent trend of domestic holidays through the pandemic has made people

realise how truly magnificent Hayman Island is and they want to become invested in it. Prospective buyers acknowledge there is a limited supply of residences of a world-class standard in a truly world-class location.” The fully-ensuited villas offer living spaces specially designed for the tropical setting with an open-plan layout, highlighted by a large fully appointed kitchen, dual living areas with balconies, stretching to the private swimming pool.

An oversized garage for two golf buggies and storage completes the design that has been intently focused on ensuring the ease of luxury living. The villas incorporate premium finishes with low-maintenance natural materials in bedrooms and living areas, natural stone and tiling in bathrooms, and expansive windows to all bedrooms and open living areas. Villa residents and their guests can enjoy a full suite of resort services, including concierge and housekeeping, access to chefs, wait staff and babysitters, in addition to the resort’s restaurants, health spa, pool, gymnasium and recreational activities. Hayman Estate residents will enjoy full 24hour on-island security services, with CCTV and access control. All villas are maintained by the dedicated on-island engineering department, while all villa interiors are maintained by resort housekeeping.

NEW DESTINATIONS OFF THE BACK OF THE HUGELY POPULAR M55 LAST YEAR, MARITIMO DELIVERS THEIR LATEST FLYBRIDGE, THIS TIME IN THE OFFSHORE SERIES WITH THE M600. STORY JAMES DUMERGUE PHOTOS SUPPLIED

I

t’s long, sleek and nicely balanced regarding weight distribution and aesthetics, poised and elegant design, with big-boat proportions on a 60-foot platform. The extra waterline length and an enclosed cockpit whet the appetite of the anglers who chase big ones far offshore, yet there’s a broader appeal for people who want a safe design for families and pets. The conditions couldn’t be any better for heading offshore today, a leisurely morning run out the Gold Coast Seaway on the sparkling Pacific Ocean past Surfers Paradise. On a day in the middle of Autumn, that feels like the middle of summer. The running attitude is natural with no tabs. Cruising and eating up the miles is a breeze. The typical shallow shaft angle and big blade props have it in full go mode quickly thanks to the high power to weight ratios of the increasingly popular Scania D16s. A

built to handle rough weather so what we had on review day was a breeze; Maritimo’s signature style is unmistakable; Far off destinations are within reach here

beautiful 30-degree day on the water with one metre of swell running is far from ideal for a boat to show off its prowess, but it’s enjoyable cruising from the fully enclosed sky lounge. Built for long-range ocean cruising, Maritimo motoryachts are comfortable in the rougher stuff, but we’re out on a day when the conditions can’t challenge the boat. It’s a shame because this boat is built to weather so much more. The extra waterline length and upgraded engines are the ingredients for impressing. When there’s nothing out of the ordinary in life and health, it’s smooth sailing, as the saying goes, and the same goes with boating. Many people can sort you out for the regular stuff, but the more specialised your gear gets, the fewer people can solve your problems. You can end up at the mercy of a specialist’s geographical availability. If you’re the adventurous type, it’s worth

looking at the foundation of a boat’s design before setting your sights beyond the horizon. The dependability and serviceability of Maritimos lend themselves well to the adventurous. Exploring beyond the horizon to lands of limited services is part and parcel of ownership. Maritimo continues to deliver dependable traditional shaft-drive boats with the reliability of manual switching electrical systems, so there will be people who know how to work on it wherever a Maritimo ends up in their adventures. Having a world champion powerboat team developing your lamination and construction methods makes it always interesting to see what steps of evolution happen between new models. In motorsport, winning margins result from groups of people working tirelessly for the tiniest of improvement, and the M600 is no different.

Maritimo’s evolution is not just about aesthetics or their approach to propulsion optimisation. They are implementing technologies to lighten superstructures and lower the centre of gravity to create naturally balanced boats. They are building on the ocean-going DNA of the brand and gaining genetic input from its racing division. Last year, the moulded hull liner introduced in the M55 utilised the new construction methods that will eventually benefit all Maritimo models. What began as a hull liner now includes the same advanced two-skinned approach throughout the boat. The hulls are still the reliable solid fibreglass ocean-going platform. Inside the hull is the superbly gel coat finished hull liner. It creates the most pristine of engine rooms, precise and perfectly engineered. It has changed the look and feel of the

Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2022

71

engine room and transformed it into a mechanical operations room that is easy to identify any leaksin. This technique minimises the voids, enables more precise bonding and creates structural benefits. It is being developed systematically across the range to include all the liners in the hulls, decks and superstructures. It’s a complicated process that involves creating more moulds. Still, it contributes to a more robust structure and lower centre of gravity. Reducing weight aloft and putting fuel tanks down really low makes a naturally supple ride with minimal pendulum effect. Developed in-house by their racing division, the monocoque building technique is something Maritimo deems worthy of

72

Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2022

protecting and is now patented worldwide. The other area in which Maritimo excels is the efficiency of the straight shaft propulsion. The longer hull requires longer shafts, which help reduce the shaft angle to below 8 degrees. The reduced shaft angle combined with the extra hull length has created more buoyancy, reducing the draft to only 1.35m. So, if the tides are a significant consideration where you go boating, this could widen the opportunities to get through some shallow water sections. All Maritimo motoryachts now have Veem propellers as standard. These are different to the standard ones because the owner has opted to fit the additional 4000L fuel tank to supplement the standard three tanks that

MARITIMO M600 already hold 4500L. Combined with a large tender with a larger than standard davit (500kg capable), the extra weight requires different propping. The pitch of these props enables more bite that the heavier load requires to get up on the plane. Propping like this takes a couple of knots off the top speed, but it still hits 32 knots with these props, so 34 knots is possible with the standard setup. Sending the power to the props are twin Scania D16 rated at 1150mhp. These optional 16L V8 upgrades are a great choice. The V8s quickly and easily pop the boat out of the hole and up on the plane in no time. They don’t add much weight at around 50kg heavier per engine than standard engines.

Cruising at 20 knots is a real sweet spot. The cockpit is what defines the M600 as the offshore series. The lower cockpit is 10sqm, allowing you to walk around the game chair on all sides (once fitted) or easily host a party. A physical barrier between the lower cockpit and the ocean creates a safe space. Below the deck, a transverse fish bin is almost big enough to have a bath in but can certainly take care of a successful day on the water. Stern cleats are below the coaming to minimise obstructions that can catch a line. Rod holders surround the cockpit coaming, a live-bait well, and tuna tubes for fresh live baiting. There are gaff lockers on either side with a nice toe recess to get right up against

the protected coaming for leverage and sure-footedness when hauling the big ones onboard. Although equipped for the angler, the cockpit is not exclusively for fishing; there are 10sqm of space to use how you like. It creates a safe cockpit for ocean-going and an easy-going area when on anchor, a great spot to share with family, including the furry members. Looking down on the action is the aft deck of the flybridge. The excellent sightlines from the aft driving station make it easy for the helmsman, and those hanging out on the lounge can enjoy the best seat in the house to watch the action in the cockpit. Between the alfresco upper cockpit and the outdoor lower cockpit, there’s over 19sqm of deck space. Stitching the two cockpits together is the entertainment module. It is a casual outdoor galley under the lids equipped with an electric burner BBQ to starboard for a short journey from hook to cook, a hot and cold water sink and a chest fridge/freezer to port complete the module. Closed, the flat surfaces of the entertainment module lids are perfect for spreading out for entertaining as an extra bar top or place for snacks and platters. It’s quite a self-contained space, but minimal height changes ensure an intimate connection to the rest of the main deck.

A small step takes you to the upper cockpit. There are a few options in this area, depending on how you want to set it up. The upper cockpit, protected by a hardtop above, is an all-weather alfresco zone. Recessed channels in the hardtop can hide away the clears and enclose the area. This one has a very social layout of three seating areas with seating facing all four ways to capture the interaction and views. There’s also an additional control station with an EJS joystick for precision closequarters manoeuvring tucked in on the port side. Inside, the galley has a few option boxes ticked, which reinforce that going away and staying away attitudes are the soul of this boat. Pull out full-sized pantry, full-size upright fridge and freezer, plus additional

drawer fridges on the port side. Triple wall-mounted appliances include the wine fridge option at the bottom and a fourburner cooktop. The more extended island bench option provides more storage, puts the dishwasher on the front end near the sinks, but is still accessible without entering the galley footprint. On the port side above the bar is the electrical panel. Roaming to new and far off places, the M600, like all Maritimos, uses the standard electrical panel to pull in anywhere and get help if you have issues. It further reinforces the nomadic nature of this boat’s foundation. One small step to the saloon, and you see the continuation of the connection to the environment that Maritimo is pushing. of the views. The refinement of the mullions they introduced in the 55 series gives a triptych view with minimal framing. It offers all the benefits of modern indoor-outdoor living from an offshore luxury boat. The dining and lounging areas have benefitted from lower sill heights to achieve better sightlines. When seated anywhere, you can look down at the water and feel the air as it naturally passes through the saloon. The port side internal stairs lead up to the flybridge sky lounge. It’s a fully enclosed cruising lounge and helm station that can be climate controlled or opened to connect with the outdoors. The helm positioned to starboard has good vision forward and aft too. Side windows, like in the saloon, open on both sides. The C-shaped cruising lounge to port will seat most passengers for magnificent viewing underway. The additional lounge behind the twin Pompenette helm chairs face the

popup TV and have convertible bed options to handle long passages or guest overflow. The bi-fold doors open up the entire rear bulkhead extending and blending the two areas. Outside, the L-shaped lounge wraps from the starboard side back halfway along the aft deck. The other half is left free for the aft helm station and chair which, as mentioned earlier have excellent vision of the whole cockpit, good side vision and even a clear view forward through the windscreen. It would be a pleasant spot to catch some breeze on a passage. The tender is stored and launched from the foredeck, optioned with the hefty 500kg davit; it can take a decent-sized tender for local explorations and adventures far from the mothership. Accommodations lead off from the light-filled atrium of the accommodations deck. It’s a three cabin and two bathroom arrangement.

The owner’s cabin is midships below with a stacked washer and dryer available just outside the cabin door for life aboard convenience. The main bathroom runs fore and aft on the starboard side as you enter and exit the cabin. Spanning the boat’s full-beam it’s quite the retreat, easy to get around with decent headroom, flat floors and views spilling in from both sides. A day bed, a desk, a vanity unit, drawers for more storage or a settee, the options on the outboard sides of the cabins are there to suit your style. The VIP cabin forward has the offset Queen berth allowing for a comfortable height and excellent flat access right up to the head on both sides. The third cabin is a spacious twin with the option to have the beds slide together for a double. There’s good viewing out the hull window, plenty of storage and excellent headroom for better everyday living. The

speed, the Maritimo is a sight to behold; A variety of tech makes captaining simple

Maritimo M600 sits nicely, straddling luxury comfort and liveability with the ocean-going and fishing function and form. Thanks to their monocoque approach to boat building, Maritimos are becoming more robust and lighter with more engine options to suit your needs. The incredibly shallow shaft angle, hull with a variable deadrise and rocker have created a boat with a wide sweet spot that can cruise in the high teens or push it wide open for top speed near the mid-30knot mark. The enclosed cockpit makes it safe and workable in all sorts of conditions, including for all ages. If you fish, it’s even better; install your favourite chair, grab a chart of the Pacific and start thinking farther afield because built for long-range cruising, the Maritimo M600 will be a great partner to explore.

he real alluring character of the FD103 is how it blurs the line between modern living and your ideal rendezvous. Horizon has created a blueprint for urban style living in your resort-like environment that is exclusively independent and functions just how you order it. Designed to wander, discover, and experience in a way that feels way more like living on a waterfront property without real estate limitations.

layout and fit-out. The process of building with Horizon has become so much more than choosing from fabric and colour books. It has become a collaboration between the yard and the customer to create the ideal boat with almost limitless personification. This FD103 is the perfect example of how what the local office promotes isn’t the limit on what’s possible from the Taiwan factory.

FINDING LOVE

There’s no doubting these boats are leading lifestyle platforms. Bringing the full-beam as far forward as naval architecture allows creates a canvass of epic proportions to paint your lifestyle into the fabric of the hulls’

Askari, the latest FD to be handed over to owners in Australia, came about almost by chance. Her experienced owners knew what they wanted out of their dream boat but couldn’t achieve it with the brand they

currently owned. After encountering the range at the Ft Lauderdale Boat Show, they put in a call to Mark Western Director of Horizon Yacht Australia, and set off down the path to perfection. The FD87, as it was known then (now FD90), impressed Askari’s owners but what they wanted was the beam and layout of the larger FD110 which was also on display. Having set objectives, they discovered that the FD110 was not achievable, however, Horizon CEO John Lu, found a way to accommodate all the layout and customisation requests by extending the hull of the FD90 and configuring similarly to the 110. Except for the beam, Askari’s owners received everything they wanted.

THAT DESIGN As you move up the FD range the designs get sleeker, yet there is no denying they carry more beam forward than traditional superyacht hulls. To help offset the impact of the big beam, all FD’s feature Horizon’s High-Performance Piercing Bow (HPPB) bow to provide some additional buoyancy, a fine entry at slow speeds and a little bit of lift at higher speeds enabling better economy. Like the 110, the 103 features a third deck which visually achieves a nice balance between the height and the length. The foredeck is an excellent example of design flexibility. Different interpretations of the foredeck have seen Horizon install jacuzzis, lounging and sunbathing options, but Askari is different. As an entertaining centric build, she is laid out with anchoring and tender business at the front and party at the back. Rather than wait for the clearing of the boat deck to free up the guest areas, the owners decided they’d probably never use the foredeck and opted for a luxurious Catsoldi Jet Tender to be stored away up front, freeing up space for guest entertainment.

option with bar and lounge. Instead, it reveals a utilitarian watersports toy shed. Everything you need for recreational fun on the water is right there and, again, doesn’t require the crew to unload it all and get it ready. The generous swim platform raises and lowers at the push of a button for PWC launching and the latest electric foiling Flyte Boards and Electric Sea Scooters lining the water sports trunk. It’s clean, practical, and fast to access when you drop the anchor and easy to pack away when you’re ready to leave.

UP TOP The bridge deck has an all-weather alfresco bar and lounge just behind the fully enclosed wheelhouse, making it the perfect spot to while away the hours underway. Fully protected under a hardtop, you can slide open the side windows threefold to bring the fresh air into the cruising lounge. The well-equipped bar to starboard will help the storytelling embellishments while keeping an eye out where you are going through the

wheelhouse windows. Fitted with a finely finished bathroom like the rest of Askari, this is the level where everything flows. Shade sails extending from the hardtop offer ventilated respite from the sun for up to ten guests who can dine formally or casually eat your favourites from the nearby electric outdoor BBQ grill. The sunset double bubbles spot looks inviting at the aft end of the bridge deck. The surrounding bar and barstools have made the jacuzzi a dual purpose destination, a spa and bar. Not everyone wants to jump in the jacuzzi, but Horizon thinks that shouldn’t limit the zone’s sociability, and it’s been a massive hit with Horizon owners since they first introduced it back in 2016 on an E75. The curious will find a mellow incline of steps that invite you to this third deck irresistible. Nothing in front and nothing behind you, the luxurious crow’s nest is perfect for sun lounging and casual entertaining with bar facilities and a driving station for slow cruising and anchoring. Subtly integrated as a tri-deck, the top layer is an elevated rooftop zone. It fits nicely with the overall lines of the vessel. It is the best vantage point for coming into new locations, catching the sun dipping into the water, or relaxing in the best-ventilated area onboard with shade.

MID-LEVEL LUXURY Zoned for moods and modes, the main deck is the home on the water with one-level living. It feels like modern waterfront living where the water is viewable from anywhere. The tones are rich, the fabrics textured with an inviting softness, and the flow seamless across an integrated and exquisitely decorated interior. The natural tones cross a variety of colours, subtle patterns in textured panels, seating that you want to sit in and a lounge surrounded by cinematic windows. Light is subtly absorbed and not reflected on the main deck. Low cut bulwarks allow the magnificent glass panels that make up the saloon to immerse you in your surroundings. The impressive windows frame nature like an artwork of an everchanging world outside. These windows will

86

frame spectacular scenery over time, and it’s easy to imagine how good they’d look framing Wineglass Bay in Tasmania or Zoe Bay on Hinchinbrook Island. Soft fabrics and plush cushioning of the furniture give this deck an inviting feel. Lounging flows openly on the starboard side towards the dual-zone full-sized wine refrigerator that supports the dining table for ten. Crowned by subtly lit overhead feature lighting with unique hand-blown glass by Soktas found over the dining table and in the master cabin.

CONVERSATION EXTENSIONS The galley features yet more owner’s designer touches that are unique to Askari. It is the space that does the heavy lifting when

entertaining and features personality in its detail befitting of its use. Small touches like the island bench faucet ending with a nut and bolt outlet, controlled by a spanner as the valve gate lever, to a barbell like grip on the refrigerator handles will spark conversation about what more Horizon and good design can do for you. The grips are fitting; I think this galley will get a workout. It looks catering capable featuring benches on three sides plus a separate island bench, big upright fridges and freezers and a wide cooktop. The benchtops and the splashbacks are Cambria, so they’ve got all the look and feel of natural stone with more stain resistance while being able to be backlit.

MASTERS MAIN For day to day living, the accessibility of the owner’s cabin on the main deck makes a lot of sense. Steps forward of the galley and spanning the voluminous floor plan, it feels more like terrestrial living. The convenience of grabbing something from your cabin without the inhibiting task of going below is appreciated when you spend extended time onboard. The main deck master of the FD series often seals the deal for boat buyers looking at more traditional layouts. The Master cabin is a treat of retreat, and anything you might need is close at hand. The sheer volume, immersive glass on either side, and slightly tapering full-beam forward allow dual bathrooms with dual entries, a toilet on each side, stylish benchtop sinks, and sublime gold taps. They are joined in the

middle by a shared shower or a shower for sharing. Adorning the king-sized master bed, two more custom light features of hand-blown Soktas glass accentuate the carefully chosen blend of tones and textures of the fabrics. The same soft to touch leather surrounding the bed base features on the face of the accessory cabinets in front of each hull window. A multifunction display near the bed allows the owners to watch the navigation and key operational vitals without leaving the cabin.

EXCLUSIVE ENTERTAINMENT The ability to monitor and control the boat is bought together by Bridger Automation from the Gold Coast. They have created the state of the art Audio-Video system for Askari which was sent to the factory for installation and commissioned on arrival in Sanctuary Cove.

Located around the boat are tablets featuring Maretron Octoplex control systems. The wireless tablets can monitor and control the vessel from anywhere onboard. The system can also be updated remotely, including all the digital switching. When you need help with adjusting parameters or updating the firmware of the Octoplex system, Michael Chang from Carling in Taiwan can log in remotely and provide the solutions and updates remotely. You don’t even need to get a technician to the boat.

DOWN UNDER Below decks, at the bottom of the staircase, the foyer leading to the four guest cabins has a convenient night fridge for refreshments or medicine storage. The two VIP cabins aft are

88

Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2021

spacious with expansive bathrooms. Forward the port cabin is a queen berth with ensuite, and the starboard cabin (closet to the stairs) is a twin cabin with a full-sized Pullman berth to flexibly accommodate three. In this part of the world, where the crew are a big part of the experience on the water, they become part of the boat’s fabric, and during the times aboard they often become part of the family. The treatment of the crew area and crew quarters on Askari reflect that family ethos, with the same high-quality fittings and finishes of the guest cabins seen in the crew quarters. Askari is a vessel planned and built with the expectation her owners can choose to operate all systems themselves which makes sense as the crew quarters then become overflow accommodations, a self-contained apartment

within a floating paradise for those big, near home get-togethers.

THE WRAP A chameleon, the FD103, Askari, can transform from a luxurious nomadic home on the water to an exclusive large scale entertaining platform. She’s adventurous by nature, well-thought-out and sophisticatedly completed by owners that have spent some time learning what defines their boating style while allowing them to project their personality into the truly custom build. Askari epitomises a perfect collaboration between a boat builder that listens and experienced buyers that know what they want.

RIVIERA 78 MOTORYACHT

S

triking new aesthetics from a European design house and a range of new smart systems has the Riviera 78 Motoryacht pushing into superyacht territory, as I found out when taking the first hull to sea on the Gold Coast. The launch of the 78 MY also coincided with the ten-year anniversary of Rodney Longhurst’s ownership of this iconic

Australian builder, as he told me at the gala evening in mid-March which included ten of the upcoming owners. “It’s been an amazing journey to get here and to launch the 78 MY, which moves the company into a whole new era.” The 78 MY tops the company’s fleet of large flybridge cruisers, following the release of the 72 model in 2018, and a raft of coupé models

that total about 5700 hulls launched during its 40 years of building. Riviera focuses on the 35–78ft market for premium level motor cruisers. However, by extending the hull of the successful 72, it has arguably extended this focus. “We began by asking our customers of larger Rivieras what they would like in a slightly longer model, so they have provided valuable input into the 78 MY,” explained Brand and Communications Director Stephen Milne. The attractions of a flybridge are several, and top among them for Pacific based boats is commanding views of coral strewn coastlines. The downside can be the motion offshore from this high vantage point, but it gives you three levels of living space when at rest. Riviera has extended the flybridge concept on this bluewater hull by creating a complete living space which includes a vast aft deck up top. This creates the most striking change to the side profile because it extends the covered area of the main deck right to the transom.

TOP TO BOTTOM:

large entertaining area is created by the extended flybridge; The 78 MY topsides are stylistically a departure for the brand but retain its proven offshore hull build

ABOARD THE 78 MY Boarding the 78 MY, the words from Riviera CEO Rodney Longhurst about the “timeless and contemporary” design echoed in my head. ‘Superyacht styling’ was the next phrase that came to mind as I strode on the vast hydraulic teak swim platform and gazed into the dinghy garage which can hold a jet ski (the foredeck also has a davit to hoist the dinghy up there when offshore). Alongside the garage was one of two entrances to the engine room. Two entrances are also on the transom to access the covered aft deck where a sumptuous full-beam sofa in tough Sunbrella fabric sets the tone. Another L-shaped one around the teak dining table creates a comfortable yet uncrowded area adjoining the

96

Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2022

saloon bulkhead, so there is plenty of room for partying and enjoying cocktails made at the wet bar. Teak is ideal when the sun beats down on bare feet, so is welcome on the swim platform and most walking spaces on the 78 MY. Practicalities also abound here with powered capstans, large fairleads, and equally generous cleating. Given this boat weighs more than 57 tonnes and will have substantial windage, these are welcome features. Walking along the narrow sidedecks to the bow shows it to be equally well appointed, thanks to a spacious sunken entertaining area with seating for eight, or at least when an optional tender is not in place. It’s moved via a single hydraulic davit arm capable of 550kg lifts. Deep storage lockers can contain

all cushions and back rests for this area, while protected from the elements. The rode includes a quality 80kg Ultra anchor which sits below a stainless steel self-loading bow roller on the bowsprit and is connected via a swivel to 100m of 13mm galvanised chain, stored in an anchor locker on the starboard side of the foredeck. A high-quality Australian made Muir vertical anchor windlass/capstan is controlled through a hand-held device or remote control from the flybridge.

THREE HELM STATIONS All navigation takes place in the flybridge, reached by the inside stairs, which can be enclosed by a teak hatch. This large space has a separate lounge and al fresco dining

RIVIERA 78 MOTORYACHT area with navigation done at the forward section, along with two remote helm stations outside. Triple premium quality leather seats are alongside the console and tall windows give grand views from the centred helm. The generous headroom and airiness can be enhanced by opening the electronic sunroof, while a sturdy ceiling handrail guides you forward — necessary, given a high boat like this will invariably roll around at sea. These are the kind of details, I find, that differentiate Riviera from other brands keen on emphasising style over practicalities, and something I appreciated when walking around. At the console the skipper is on the centre line of the vessel so can judge both sides equally and see aft via the toughened glass door (with cameras enhancing the lower views aft). The console is dominated by a row of three 24in Garmin Glass Bridge navigation

screens, ideal for large format views of charts, radar, cameras, and sonar. Engine and system monitoring is done from proprietary central screens (Czone digital system and Man screen). The Twin Disc joysticktransmission is the key instrument for slow manoeuvring, with two modes (normal and high), and other essentials included windlass controls and fuel cut-offs nearby as well. It’s comprehensive, yet not overly fussy — very much an Australian trait. Skippers can enjoy the night-time seclusion on the fold-out double bed secreted under the aft lounge with toilet nearby or the separate crew quarters. Label brand push-button chromed doors are used in both the main saloon and flybridge entrances. The extended flybridge creates a large entertaining area, mostly covered, with movable seating on its aft and covered lounge to starboard with wet bar on the port side.

LIVEABILITY The saloon is devoted to relaxing with an atrium-style stairs forward bathed in natural light to the accommodation. The décor of gleaming teak contrasting with the black panelling, neutral coloured cushioned benches on three sides, and wool carpeting sets the calming tone of this spacious area. This factory specified first hull clearly has been built to show the variety of materials available, yet this alchemy gives a contemporary, maritime facade that should have wide appeal. My only gripe was the white Ultra Leather clad handrails that will in time show grime and sun cream stains. Of course, owners will impose their own style, chosen from the profusion of materials and options available. Typical of Riviera are the practicalities

here: the mid-ships side door, and discrete cabinetry, including wine cooler, around the open plan layout. The U-shaped galley rear is extensively fitted with deep double sinks surrounded by worktops. There’s a four-burner electric Miele stove with a large microwave convection oven and dishwasher, plus there are views aft to inspire the chef. Perishables go in the upright fridge and double-drawer freezers. Detail finishes include holders for glasses and crockery, while the washer and dryer plus custom ironing board are secreted in the aft crew quarters.

FOUR LARGE CABINS Descending to the four cabins via the teak stairwell reveals a layout of full-beam owner’s suite aft with VIP V-berth and two side

cabins. Set low in the hull, the owner enjoys a king-sized bed with sprung mattress against the aft bulkhead (which adjoins the crew quarters so is insulated from the engine room noise). A large walk-in wardrobe adjoins the long vanity desk on port. Starboard has a three seater lounge with generous walk-around space at the bed foot. The forward bulkhead houses a TV and home theatre system with surround sound speakers. Airflow feels good thanks to opening portholes (electronically wired) and fixed hull windows for natural light. The ensuite is stylish, yet practical with large shower cubicle easily wiped down, fresh water electric flush toilet and his/hers sinks. Again, natural light and air comes in via hatches. The V-berth uses the deep bow for its volume and airiness, enhanced by the sealed

plan saloon can be customised to individual tastes; Amid-ships, the owners suite is very comfortable; To the aft, the galley serves both inside and outside diners

98

RIVIERA 78 MOTORYACHT windows and double opening skylights. It has a walk-around queen-sized bed with storage beneath and wardrobe space each side, outboard cupboards with positive locking doors (an excellent Riviera feature) and a private ensuite. The port cabin has an ensuite which is also the day head, with twin single beds which slide together. A bedside table with leather inlays is a feature of both configurations and there is a cedar-lined hanging wardrobe and even more storage outboard and under the beds. The starboard guest cabin cleverly puts the two single bunks at right angles, allowing privacy and communication.

PROVEN HULL The 78 MY has the same beam as the 72 and proven characteristics that make it suitable for offshore as well as meandering gently in displacement mode for those long sea crossings. The warped V design uses a sharp entry for directional stability and flatter aft sections to ‘get out of the hole’ for planing, while retaining some deadrise to add heeling stability. The original hull of the 72 that has been extended to create 78, was tank tested at the Wolfson Institute Unit for Marine Technology and Industrial Dynamics at the University of Southampton in England. The hull is built to CE standards, obligatory given that over 50 per cent of the company’s sales are overseas. Construction is hand-laid fibreglass with foam core topsides and solid fibreglass on the keel, longitudinals, and other key structural areas.

The main entry to the engine room is from the crew quarters. These are at the bottom of their own staircase aft; self-contained with one (or two) bunks, bathroom, microwave, and the washing machine. Stepping through the heavy watertight door reveals a gleaming engine room with generous space around twin MAN V12 2000hp quad turbodiesels.

Power delivery to the V-shafts is via Twin Disc remote-mounted Quickshift gearboxes, integrated to the Express Joystick System. V-shafts reduce space for the drive train within the hull, but the downside is weight aft, which has to be compensated for by a central-forward fuel tank. Mechanical noise is minimised by the use of Aquamet 22 Sea Torque oil-filled shafts and Veem five-axis propellers. Backup systems include twin 29kW Onan generators, both AC and DC water pumps and manual over-rides for systems such as steering and the digital Czone CanBus system for house systems. As this hull is eventually destined for America, it has 110AC. Stabiliser options now include Humphree fins or the usual Seakeeper internal model. Both have their merits, with the external fins being more vulnerable but lighter and requiring less power, while the Seakeeper requires

“THIS STABILITY WAS MOST NOTICEABLE UPON BANKING INTO A LONG TURN”

spinning up before use and underway is arguably less affective. This first hull had the external Humphree fin stabilisers midships. The Swedish company supplies fixed and rotating fins, with the latter fitted to the 78 MY. Their rotation, of 180 degrees fore and aft gives them the flexibility to be deployed according to scenarios. Their black domed shaped mechanisms are located on each side of the engine room and their deployment is graphically shown on screen at the steering console.

GOLD COAST SAIL Australia’s La Niña summer was the first test for the new 78 MY because the rain cascaded down, forcing me to seek shelter inside. The large wiper blades were required to safely allow skipper Dean to guide us off the dock at

Marina Mirage, with judicious use of the Twin Disc joystick. The shallow and busy seaway is home to hordes of jet skis, so the high vantage point of the flybridge on the 78 MY was ideal as I snuck into the skipper’s chair to take control. My first job was to find some swell, so we slowed at the Seaway to deploy the Humphree stabilisers. They automatically paddled to quickly reduce the hull’s rolling, self-adjusting. Clever stuff. Then I watched the screen as they weather-cocked as I throttled forward, thus reducing drag while still adding stability. This stability was most noticeable upon banking into a long turn, whereby they flattened the hull to the extent that even a full glass of G&T wouldn’t have spilt — impressive. Even more so, was the smooth transmission as I put the boat into forward and eventually reverse several times.

The powerful 2000hp Mans were so easily controlled that I found it remarkable when the Garmin screen showed 22 knots, the ideal cruising speed (472L/g fuel burn at 1850rpm giving about 475 miles range). The clear views all around from the flybridge gave me the confidence to accelerate, with only the faintest whine from the quad turbos that pushed the hull to an impressive 34 knots. Slow handling, in reverse with a stiff breeze equally went predictably as the Twin Disc joystick was pushed in the desired direction of travel, the fore and aft thrusters holding the tall hull against the wind as it went arrow straight astern. So, even the amateur skipper, or boating journalist can master this mini-superyacht which says a lot about the 78 MY. Of course, you don’t need to take my word for it. Head to H Pier and see for yourself!

ust like BRABUS’s snarling performance of hotted-up cars — their G Class Mercedes, for example — Axopar’s hulls received the same treatment from the German specialists in their first foray into the marine sector. During the last 43 years, BRABUS has grown to become the world’s largest independent auto tuner, specialising in Mercedes-Benz, which it turns into supercars before they roll out of their Ruhr Valley factory. Other customers for this vroom treatment include Rover and Smart Cars from Daimler, plus a division with a long-established history of battery-powered vehicles. BRABUS otherwise build their own custom supercars. So akin to Ferrari, Lexus, and several other

car specialists, in 2017 BRABUS took a marine division under their wing — resulting in the perfectly matched BRABUS Marine and Axopar. Having driven the early Axopars on their introduction to Australian back in 2017, their build and feel was all about understated power and precision, just like a re-engineered Mercedes-BRABUS. It helped that Constantin Buschmann, CEO of BRABUS, adopted his family’s passion for boats after discovering Axopar and loving the functional yet alluring design. Shortly after, Buschmann formed a partnership with Axopar to create an “elevated new product”, which is now known as the BRABUS Shadow range, based on the Axopar

28 and 37 models. The range is designed with Jarkko Jämsén, head designer for all Axopar boats, in collaboration with the BRABUS design team. Early success and market acceptance has so far resulted in a prestigious 2020 Red Dot Design Award for the BRABUS 900 Shadow. “The Shadow name signifies a hyper-quick, hyper-exciting luxury day-boat or tender, a tremendous ‘go-anywhere’ support boat that owners of large yachts and superyachts will love to drive themselves, seeking out beautiful bays, remote islands, and coastlines where the larger yacht may choose to follow,” said a company spokesperson. Built-in exclusivity includes not only the fit-out and personalisation, but also because these are limited edition boats. This makes them guaranteed crowd pleasers, according to recent owner Ted who loves the attention and loud branding which gives him good reason to talk boats and cars with other enthusiasts whilst buzzing around Sydney Harbour.

NUMBER ONE This accomplished company brings a lot to the marine table, which was apparent when I went aboard the first one that eYachts has imported to Australia. “We immediately put our hand up for the first hull when we heard it was available because of the cancelled Cannes Show,”

boss Peter Hrones told me. “Rather than see this brand go somewhere else, we had to have it because of our long-standing Axopar relationship.” eYachts proved me wrong with the Axopars, which I loved but thought of as niche boats. However, with more than 100 sold in Australia, the numbers speak for themselves.

STYLE AND SUBSTANCE Before boarding the BRABUS Shadow 900, I looked over its sistership, the latest version of the Axopar 37 that was nearby, just to remind myself about it and of course compare the two. When describing the differences between

it and the Shadow 900 we can wax lyrical with many clichés — ‘levels of refinement’ and ‘understated power’ — but what we are really talking about is passion for an iconic brand backed up by good old fashioned German engineering. So yes, another final cliché — style and substance is what the BRABUS 900 Shadow is all about. This has got to be the ultimate boat for brand loyalists of the hot-car variety and, having lived for years in Germany where I futilely tried to outpace their car brands on the Autobahn in my Ford, I can see the attraction. It is of course pretty hard to miss given the emblazoned BRABUS marque on the engine cowls of the Mercury 450R

outboards that cry out for attention. The gunmetal grey hull immediately won my approval because the sunlight on the neighbouring Axopar 37 produced a lot of glare, while the Shadow 900 simply looked cooler and was easier on the eyes. Remembering those clichés, the ‘substance’ on the Shadow 900 includes a carbon reinforced hull that allows it to be rated for these powerful 450 Racing engines (where the Axopar 37 maxes-out at 400HP versions).

CHOOSE YOUR WEAPON There are three main layout choices: Spyder (open console), Cabin Cross and Sun Top. Our review boat, is the Cabin Cross with opening roof and large doors on each side of the cabin. Deck options also include tall storage lockers, an aft cabin or a wet bar. Our review boat came with most popular layout for the Axopar range, the wet bar with triple removable seats at the transom, allowing the twin outboards to be fully elevated. Water access each side is good. Rubber sealed floor

lockers and high bulkheads at the base of each door means that water can run out sans drama. Underfoot my shoes enjoyed a firm grip on the white rubber cockpit sole. Important Australian features include a removable canvas bimini strung on poles going into the gunwales and the foredeck. Given the utilitarian nature of the Shadow 900, a ski pole arch is ideal and underfoot are two shallow but long lockers for snorkels and small surfboard/kneeboard. Other storage comes in the form of lockers clad in stylish carbon. Also stylish is the Corian-topped wet bar enclosed under a long fibreglass lid. It includes a Miele electric plate, top loading 40L refrigerator and sink, nicely lit by two ambient lights under the cabin overhang.

FOREDECK Side decks are wide enough to walk along and tall gunwales with a sturdy powder coated guard rail ensure safe passage forward. Other

BRABUS SHADOW 900 HULL AND SYSTEMS The well proven two-step Axopar 37 GRP hull has been updated from the initial model that I drove back in 2017 but looks very similar, with the same stepped chine forward and pronounced longitudinal strakes and flairs to deflect waves. The shallow forefoot allows easy beach landings yet doesn’t compromise linear performance thanks to the long keel and effective deadrise. Practicalities include an additional rub rail below the rubber gunwales, ideal for bumping against the superyacht mothership or for when errant journalists are behind the wheel. The Mercury 450 Racing engines are super smooth and lethal, capable of 85 miles per hour according to the maker and with maximum torque at 5500rpm and a smooth gearbox; allowing for seamless shifting between gears. Stored power is in four 100Ah Lithium ION batteries with a 3000W inverter that is charged from the outboards’ 115A alternators and runs most house systems including the 8000BTU Webasto air conditioner, so no need for generator. For Tasmanians there’s a Webasto diesel heater, an excellent brand that I’ve used sailing in higher latitudes. Engines are started with a pair of AGM batteries. Other key systems include a shore power inlet and there’s room on the cabin top for a large solar panel should you desire to reduce your carbon footprint.

handy features include integrated gunwale steps for boarding midships. Surprisingly, only standard cleats were used rather than retractable ones. The foredeck is dominated by the cabin module with twin gull-wing doors. In front is a double seat and above the plumb bow the pulpit can have a cushion, for that ultimate bow rider feel. The bow has an easily deployed anchor on an offset roller so some owners might choose to put a ladder alongside, given the shallow forefoot that allows these boats to be easily beached — as I’ve done with Axopars in the past. Beneath is a deep locker containing the stainless chain and plinth for the horizontal Maxwell windlass, which comes with a remote control that cleverly also controls the Sidepower SE60 bow thruster. So if sailing solitary, you can work at the bow while keeping the boat into the wind.

SALOON DINING Upright bulkheads, tall windows, and those huge side doors create a fantastic airy feel to the Shadow 900 cabin, yet simply shut the doors, pull the sunroof closed, and you have a cosy space for blasting offshore or along the coast to that weekend retreat. The electric canvas sunroof still gives enough hard-top space for gantry equipment such as the Simrad broadband radar, lights and even a satellite dome should you desire. At the back of the saloon, the U-shaped settee and sizeable folding table make for a comfortable lunch-time nook, and I’d agree with BRABUS Marine in describing the finish as ‘fine leather’ as the quality and feel of the upholstery is Mercedes level in every respect. This includes the car-style carpet segments that are easily moved — perhaps too easily. Centre stage at the helm is the charismatic BRABUS leather-clad steering wheel on the carbon fibre facie with twin bucket seats and bolsters. Close your eyes and the feel

is supercar level. Yet German pragmatism ensures this is a highly functional part of the Shadow 900, including paddle controls inside the wheel rim for tabs, bow thruster, and house functions. Steering is actuated electronically, which is efficient but can lack feel. Behind the wheel is the Extended Glass Bridge from Simrad that has NSS 12-inch displays with two additional 9in screens, including Mercury’s Vessel View showing all engine data. Mercury’s Joystick Piloting black box controls the gear, revs and steering — so can be used not just for manoeuvring, but also when under way at slow speeds as we were whilst threading our way into the Quays Marina. The Skyhook feature uses GPS to maintain position and heading, the latter via an integrated digital compass. Also useful offshore is the Route feature, that follows the waypoints set in the Simrad NSS plotter. Another Mercury feature is its Active Trim that takes over from the manual trim buttons on the side of the twin throttles.

BRABUS SHADOW 900 XC Other smarts include the Simrad HD radar and AIS, plus VHF. Laudable also is the chunky push-button switches below the glass bridge, controlling items like the sturdy single wiper that swept the toughened glass front window clean. Bling is abundant everywhere, from the mood-lit marque footplate to badges on the carbon fibre panels, which helps to avoid confusing it with a mere Axopar. Lighting can be changed according to the mood and level of the celebrations.

COMFY CABIN Despite the day-boat appeal, the cabin is fairly well fitted-out for weekend retreats at quiet anchorages, where the shallow draft of the Shadow 900 will give you a place far from the madding crowd. Simply open both gull-wing doors and the small fore hatch to create an alfresco resting spot, or even close up the lot when the mercury rises and switch on the air conditioner, which is powered by the inverter for short periods.

For the double bed, there’s a sprung mattress in grey/black patterned Dinamica upholstery and a Corian sink for ablutions (plus the hot electric shower on the transom) and even a hidden electric toilet beneath the aft bench. This comes with an 80L holding tank. There’s also an optional bulkhead for the toilet but I’d prefer to simply close the cabin door. Above the toilet is a large mirror, which can be optioned with a 42 in flat screen television. However, a Fusion Apollo 77 entertainment system will get the boat rocking.

BROKEN BAY BLAST Driving on a bumpy Broken Bay was an ideal trip for the Shadow 900 because its sharp hull simply cut through the one foot chop once I’d put it on the plane, cruising nicely yet at an incredible 40 knots. To do that I simply added about 15 degrees of tilt on the Mercury outboards which flattened the bow. After we passed Barenjoey Head I touched the tabs to see their effect, which resulted in more drag, rendering them unnecessary — at least for a lightly loaded boat. Out on Broken Bay, the chop increased but not the slamming or any sound of groaning from the hull. So with throttles pushed fully down, the Simrad GPS showed a lightning fast 61 knots, which would be a truly scary speed in many hulls but not this which felt rock steady. Apart from the wind and faint whine of the motors all was tranquil. That was until I put the wheel down to push the hull into some tight turns. The Shadow 900 relished CLOCKWISE FROM RIGHT: Lighting can

this new challenge, digging its chines in to drive me around rather than slide, with no cavitation despite the conditions. While doing this, visibility remained at 360 degrees, so including the high side when fully banked over, thanks to the large side windows. Hooning around with all the stunning scenery was of course a crime, but in my defence I have to say that the hull encouraged this behaviour before I reined it in to glide into a shallow Pittwater bay. Doing this was easily done via the joystick and its black box system that Mercury have refined beautifully. You may not get a free supercar with a BRABUS 900 Shadow, but just about everything else is aboard — including oodles of character, performance, and panache.

n 1985, yachtsmen and adventurers the world over had a big year. Against a background of international political turmoil, records were set for everything from speed to size (not to mention some wild trends in interiors). At home, the nation watched Apollo take out the Sydney to Hobart (again), the fourth ever edition of what’s now known as the Volvo Ocean Race started out from Southampton, and that same year, in another corner of the world, a future international legend was quietly born. European and American boat yards may be somewhat historical homes for the development of cruising yachts, but in 1985, founder Tony Fleming was looking to the future. At the time, the business of building yachts in Taiwan was only really a few decades old, yet the local industry was already

Tools of the trade; Constant integration of new features large and small has kept Fleming at the height of luxury

developing an incredible reputation for quality and finesse. Along with business partner Anton Emmerton, Fleming handpicked the Tung Hwa boat yard as the facility in which to create the very first Fleming 55. Tung Hwa is located in Kaohsiung, on the south end of the island. Kaohsiung is today broadly considered south east Asia’s hub for yacht construction. Local yards in Taiwan produce the majority of the 50-plus foot yachts in the world today. While Kaohsiung is the third biggest city in the country today, back in the ‘80s it was still on its way up from its roots as a tiny port town — and Fleming Yachts was going to be a part of the rise, with the evolution of the Fleming 55.

118

Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2022

FLEMING 55 The original mould for this model was built for a 55-foot yacht, but the first eight of these were actually 50 feet — built with slightly shorter cockpits. By the mid ‘90s, this had been extended out to 55, and by the late ‘90s over 100 had been delivered to customers worldwide. The very first arrived in Australia in 2001, marking the launch of the brand here. It’s easy to see why this model was such an early customer favourite when you look at the technical flexibility. With a range of 2,\000 nautical miles at eight knots, she can still hit a top speed of around 18 knots, though most owners tend to stick around ten for longer passages. Of course, the design has

also come a long way since the very first was completed in 1986. Hundreds of incremental improvements have been made, incorporating the latest in advanced yachting technology, to produce a modern yacht that’s evolved with the times. And that’s not even touching on the addictive aesthetic. Back in 2012, Trade-a-Boat magazine noted that “the class isn’t intangible; you can see it in the depth of the paintwork and the quality of the fittings. Take one step aboard, through the wide gate in the side bulwark and you’re hooked forever — much like sliding into the back seat of a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost”. Over 250 have now been produced for owners across the globe, and over a dozen of those are cruising in Australia.

“TAKE ONE STEP ABOARD AND YOU’RE HOOKED FOREVER — MUCH LIKE SLIDING INTO THE BACK SEAT OF A ROLLS-ROYCE SILVER GHOST” FLEMING 75 The first Fleming 75 was launched in 2000, as a result of customer demand for a larger model, and years of input to kick the engineering excellence and effortless elegance up a notch. The evolution didn’t stop there; 10 years later, it was upgraded to a 78, with a slightly longer hull and keel, to reduce fuel consumption and increase range. Smart and artful. While the Fleming 78 is considered the ‘ultimate Fleming’ by owners around the globe, we’re yet to see any grace Aussie waters.

FLEMING 65 Not content with resting on the laurels earned by the 55 and 78, the next Fleming model was launched in 2005. It’s probably a pretty good sign when the very first of a new model is snapped up by the founder themselves. But even without the welldocumented adventures of Tony Fleming’s Venture, there was enough demand for five 65s to have been delivered within the year. It probably helped that Yachts magazine voted the Fleming 65 best in her class in the world for 2006. But quite apart from the international recognition, engineering obsessives have appreciated the considerable upgrade in interior and deck space compared with the 55. Further testing and evaluation of refinements (by Tony himself on Venture) has led to an impressive list of new items available on production models. The brand’s official VR tour of hull 65-051 is a mustsee if you’re ready to daydream about being miles away from lockdowns on land in an unimaginably spacious master suite. The very first Fleming 65 landed in Australia not long after, in 2010. In fact, it was brought in by the same lucky owners who’d acquired the first 55 here. Today, there are four Fleming 65s around the country.

120

Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2022

In 2006 Tony Fleming stepped up to his next adventure. Fleming handed over the reigns in Kaohsiung to his nephew, engineer Adi Shard, his daughter Nicky, and experienced engineer (and yacht captain) Duncan Cowie, who’d joined the team in 2001. From her new home in Newport Beach, California, Venture explored destinations

around North, Central and South America, from BC and Alaska, down to Mexico, the Galapagos, through the Panama Canal and back up the east coast up to Nova Scotia and PEI. At the time it was called “the world’s most extensive sea trial”, leading to many of the aforementioned improvements to the 65 since first launch.

FEATURE: FLEMING YACHTS HISTORY

FLEMING 58 Fleming Yachts had to do something big to mark their 25th anniversary in 2013. So with a ton of research and input from dozens of owners, they created the Fleming 58. This new model represented the perfect balance between the strengths of the 55 and 65. However, to get it right required not just a few adjustments, but re-engineering from the keel up. Naval architects Norman Wright and Sons, based here in Brisbane, were selected for their expertise in hull design and tank testing. The (adorable) 1/12 scale model was built and tested in Tassie, making the Aussie contribution to Fleming heritage more significant than ever. While the first (full size)

Fleming 58 didn’t arrive in here until 2017, there are now a couple of them making up the contingent in Australia. When we checked out the 58, we noted the builder mentioned that “the design of the hull and increased waterline length will deliver fuel consumption similar to the Fleming 55 but that “a 50 per cent increase in tankage over the smaller sibling greatly increases the 58’s range”. It’s not just the extra tankage that’s stacked on this model. The cockpit is bigger by a couple of square metres, there’s crucial extra room in the saloon, and space for a freezer, fridge and barbie. Of course, with a variety of layout options, it’s up to new owners how they make the most of this space.

With the latest model in the Fleming range, the 85, engineers had the (incredibly modest) mission of creating “literally the finest possible ocean going pilothouse motoryacht, in every respect.” So, apparently no slowing down for this pioneering team with less than 30 years’ production on the board, but hundreds of years of combined experience and expertise. Not to mention extensive CFD technology, thorough fine-tuning and testing to ensure the performance lives up to all promises. When Trade-a-Boat reviewed the 85 last year, they noted that, “the Fleming 85 has come a long way from the downeast lobster boats from which it borrows nautical styling”. Not just because of the deck space or the flexibility of getting your 85 with either an open flybridge or enclosed pilothouse,

FEATURE: FLEMING YACHTS HISTORY

“FLEMING OWNERS CONTINUE TO POST SOME OF THE MOST STUNNING CONTENT FROM ALL CORNERS OF THE MAP” depending on your entertaining preferences. It’d have to be a pretty fancy lobster boat to have this kind of cream leather upholstery, flawless blonde wood panelling and tasteful finishes. It’s not just meticulously engineered, it’s classy. The exclusivity is real; there are only a few of these in the world at present, and one on order for a lucky owner in Australia. The Fleming 85 is the latest in a line that represents a dedication to classic looks, whilst being at the cutting edge of design and equipment. But it’s certainly not the end of the line. Tony’s voyages on the Venture II continue (check out the Fleming Yachts YouTube for some serious cruising inspiration). Fleming owners continue to post some of the most stunning content from all corners of the map, whilst delivering further performance feedback that’s going straight into next generation designs. There are currently over 340 Flemings worldwide. By the end of this year, 27 of them will be cruising in Australia. With a growing base of loyal owners, and a string of international accolades, it’s well on its way to becoming a contemporary classic in its class.

MEET THE FLEMING YACHTS AUSTRALIAN TEAM Fleming Yachts’ Aussie contingent consists of Egil Paulsen and Samuel Nicholas. They’re supported by a team of contractors who help deliver specialist services to Fleming owners around the country. Both are long-term Fleming followers, Paulsen the proud owner of a 55 himself, Nicholas having cruised aboard a 55 in Scandinavian waters many times. They’re proud to have been part of bringing the current 23 Flemings to Australia. The Australian team maintain strong relationships with the current unit that run the building operations in Taiwan. Up-tothe-minute communication helps them offer the highest levels of personal service and technical insight to clients. It’s also telling that Paulsen has a close relationship with founder Tony Fleming, and introduced director Duncan Cowie to him. This closeknit group are prepared for a bright future for Fleming Yachts in Australia, along with loyal owners. Don’t hesitate to pay them a visit at E pier and experience “the ultimate cruising yachts” for yourself.

BOLD BRAZILIAN COMING FROM PERHAPS A SURPRISING PLACE, THIS SCHAEFER 510GTS PROVED IT HAS THE GOODS TO GO AGAINST THE BEST OF THEM STORY ALLAN WHITING PHOTOS SUPPLIED

S

chaefer Yachts’ 510GTS is the latest iteration of the Sport 51ft family that was released in 2017. Our test boat featured the company’s three-cabin, threehead internal fit-out that offers generous below decks accommodation for a big sports cruiser. Schaefer Yachts are designed and manufactured in Brazil, which is a not generally recognised economic giant in South America. Derided in childhood ‘Biggles’ books as, “the place where nuts come from and nuts go to”, Brazil has a GDP larger than Australia’s and the country is a major food and manufactured goods exporter — examples are Mercedes-Benz and VW automobiles, and Schaefer Yachts.

124

Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2022

THE BUILDER Founded in 1992 by yacht designer Márcio Schaefer, Schaefer Yachts is the builder of world-class luxury sport yachts up to 25m in length. This five-axis machine produces precision boat plugs, from which highly

accurate moulds are made. The shipyard also uses vinyl ester resins in state-of-the-art vacuum infusion equipment, which makes the boats lighter and more robust than polyester construction. The main powertrain supplier is Volvo Penta and Onan turns diesel into electricity.

CONSTRUCTION From the drawing board — or, more appropriately these days, CAD-CAM screen — the 510 sports and flybridge models are based around the Volvo Penta IPS poddrive system. In the case of this hull, the IPS orientation goes as far as realigning conventional engine positioning.

SCHAEFER 510GTS Twin-engine installations normally have the engines set beside each other on parallel bearers that align with the keel, but the Schaefer 510 has the engine bearers slightly inclined towards each other at their forward ends. This orientation narrows the forward width of each engine, allowing ample working space and also providing additional hull space for a small port-side ‘crew’ cabin and an 11.5kVA, starboard-side, Onan generator. Narrowing the engine-space width also gives more hull-shape freedom and the Schaefer 510 has a deadrise of 17-degrees at the transom — a compromise between seagoing ability and hull volume. Our test boat was powered by a pair of 550hp Volvo Penta D8-IPS700 7.7L, common-rail diesel engines, with twin-entry turbos and superchargers. They were coupled to IPS15 pods with twin counter-rotating propeller legs and Volvo Penta’s excellent Electronic Vessel Control systems.

“THE SHIPYARD ALSO USES VINYL ESTER RESINS IN STATE-OF-THE-ART VACUUM INFUSION EQUIPMENT, WHICH MAKES THE BOATS LIGHTER AND MORE ROBUST”

SETTING OFF Our dockside inspection of the 510GTS began in the interesting engine room, where we found servicing access straightforward and labelling of critical components very good. (The USA is Schaefer’s largest export market, so English instructions have received priority.)

Access to the engine bay was via an aft deck hatch, but it was interesting to note a much larger deck panel that could be removed, without cutting into the teak planking, should it be necessary to extract the generator or an engine. Getting aboard from a pontoon dock meant a same-level step onto the huge swim platform, but this platform raised and lowered electro-hydraulically, so dock variance was easy to adjust for. The swim platform is notable for incorporating teak steps that provided safe access from the aft deck. As the platform lowered, the staircase emerged and the steps remained horizontal, regardless of the platform height. It also has a load rating of

160kg, so strapping a tender or a few water toys in place wouldn’t be a problem. On the aft deck, two steps down from the saloon deck, is a large BBQ module, with an electric-element, hot-rock cooker and is flanked by twin ice boxes sitting atop a pair of large storage bins. The teak-planked saloon deck features an L-shaped lounge and extendable centrepedestal table. It also had an inwale section that lowered electrically to become a side balcony. To its side, a remote joystick control panel allowed easy docking from the boat’s starboard quarter. A powered sun awning extends over part of the saloon deck, from the aft end of the carbonfibre targa roof.

SCHAEFER 510GTS

Also on the saloon deck is a covered companionway, leading into a small ‘crew’ cabin that features a single bed, sink and toilet. I reckon kids would love this hideaway if the boat wasn’t crewed, but it could also be used for storage space.

THE INTERIOR Three-part, sliding stainless-framed glass doors separate the saloon from the flushdeck area. Removable carpet covered the FRP saloon sole and FRP interior flooring, giving apartment-like underfoot comfort and encouraging visitors to go barefoot indoors. ‘Apartment-like’ is certainly the Italian design theme of the saloon and the belowdeck cabins. Cream leather trim, soft wall

coverings and gloss-grey lacquer gave a luxurious feel and are, I think, a better choice for the Australian market than the somewhat garish, diamond-pleat leather and bluehighlight trim used on some US-market boats. A large sink complemented by a folding mixer tap and an electric induction cooktop with adjustable pot fiddles hides beneath grey-lacquered lids along the starboard side. To celebrate a culinary success, a U-shaped lounge and extendable table are opposite. Drawers and cupboards throughout the boat had push-action, hidden catches, a nice level of sophistication. An oven and microwave are found under the Silestone bench, and two fridges are hidden behind cupboard doors. I feel the fridges could have been larger, but maybe the

Brazilians don’t drink as much beer as my mates! Schaefer claimed the boat is intended for up to 16 people for day cruises and they’d easily be seated on the lounges and a few deck chairs. At the forward end of the saloon, the starboard steering station is purposefully narrow — although comfy for two really good friends — to maximise saloon and companionway space. A design element I appreciate is pull-out panels that give quick access to the windscreen wiper motors and the behind-dashboard electronic connections. The helmsperson has adjustable seating and a clear view of three display screens, with the standard IPS joystick control, engine speed levers and essential function rocker switches

close to hand. The small, leather-trimmed, car-like steering wheel is well-positioned. The entire saloon roof can be opened to the sky, extending the open-air feel of the boat. Schaefer offers three 510 cabin options: a two-bedroom, two-head, with two common areas; a two-bedroom, two-head with central common area and a three-bedroom, threehead arrangement. The test boat has a three-cabin layout that I thought might be somewhat cramped but turned out to be quite habitable. In this layout, the forward head doubles as a day-head and the central cabin has two single beds.

128

Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2022

In all options, the forward and aft cabins have queen-sized island beds, and the aft cabin also has a lounge. The sunken aft cabin is the largest but is also closest to the engine firewall so would perhaps not be the most relaxing. Sleeping in this cabin with the generator running, to operate the air conditioning, wouldn’t be a problem for me, but sensitive souls might prefer the forward cabin. In the right weather, of course, all cabins have opening ports, set into bonded glazed hull panels. With the aircon, cooking, refrigeration, water heating, four TVs, awning, four bilge

pumps, four flushing toilets, anchor windlass and powered decks being all-electric the Schaefer 510GTS was well equipped with batteries — one 150Ah 12V each for engine starting and a total of six 12V house batteries totalling 695Ah which should allow for a reasonable amount of use without firing up the Onan. The hot water system is also electric but can have input from engine coolant transfer while the engines are operating to reduce electrical load.

SCHAEFER 510GTS CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT: The steering

wheel is designed for easy voyaging; A joystick provides even more control when needed; Guests will love the space on offer; Twin beds provide space for overnight stays; Queen-size island beds are easily accessible

UNDERWAY My short evaluation of the Schaefer 510GTS was conducted on Sydney Harbour, on a rare, sunny autumn day, with enough throughheads swell and cross-breeze to set up some typical chop. The boat cut a stunning picture, thanks to its blue-white, two-tone colour scheme. The dark blue hull colour disguised the glazed hull inserts and also reduced the visual height of the 510GTS giving it a real sense of purpose and speed. Two-up manoeuvring out of a very tight d’Albora Marina berth was eased immensely by the IPS joystick control, allowing unfussed mooring rope handling. Powered side windows at the steering station allow easy communication between crew and helm person. Once clear of no-wash areas the softly burbling diesels were unleashed, with common-rail injection, low-rev supercharging and high-rev turbocharging doing their part to see planing speed achieved in around eight seconds. The hull feels effortless the steering wheel action is precise, with no delay in response. Handling is excellent. With the sliding roof opened there was fresh-air flow, but no wind buffeting.

SCHAEFER 510GTS

Schaefer claims a cruising speed of around 24 knots, but the ‘sweet spot’ in this particular boat was around four knots lower than that, with a fuel burn in each engine showing 130L/h. WOT operation registered a shade over 27 knots, but should be 32 knots, according to Schaefer’s specs. Overseas independent testing has confirmed Schaefer’s claimed figures, with several recordings of 32.5 knots at 2800rpm. A closer inspection of our test boat’s hull showed considerable shell build-up, following Sydney’s wet, warm-water summer. Schaefer Yachts Australia’s national sales manager, Drew Watney, told me that the clean-bottom boat had easily achieved 32 knots out of the box.

THE WRAP With its deck and saloon spaces devoted to entertainment and having limited water and fuel tankage, the Schaefer 501GTS is aimed at the short-haul recreational market. With

BETTER BOATING ALL ABOARD FOR BOAT OWNERSHIP WITHOUT THE HASSLES WITH BOATING SYNDICATION AUSTRALIA STORY IAN BELLERT PHOTOS SUPPLIED

O

wning a beautiful boat is like a (very expensive) gym membership. You pay for the privilege, but do you actually use it every other day? Sometimes, it may feel like you’re not getting enough out of your investment. Imagine owning the boat of your dreams without the maintenance hassles, with 24hour service if something is not quite right, plus an offer for training to be an excellent captain and to make sure you feel safe and make the most out of your time on the water. It is a reality with Boating Syndication Australia (BSA). We caught up with Boating Syndication Australia’s CEO Andy Young to find out how boating can be a cost-effective and timeefficient proposition in boat syndication.

132

Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2022

FEATURE: PROFILE BSA

THE BSA BACKSTORY Andy Young has been in the marine industry for 16 years. Along with his wife Belinda, they run Australia’s largest boating syndication company, BSA. The company has over 100 registered boats across the six locations in Australia, from an indulgent Sunseeker 82 to a sporty Schafer 375 plus a number of popular Riviera vessels throughout the east coast. As Andy says, syndication makes complete sense. “Most people never use their boats as much as they dreamt of before buying. Like a gym membership, you sign up thinking you will use your membership and then life gets in the way. After a period of time, you realise you haven’t used it. Buying a boat outright is just the same. Unless you’re a tinkerer, need an escape pad or are retired, you won’t get to spend enough time on your boat to justify the purchase. Every marina has boats sitting there being underused because the owners don’t have the time to use them. With BSA, we can offer a bigger boat, a more affordable boat, and ways to maximise your precious time,” he said.

CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE: A whole

variety of vessels are available with BSA; All the enjoyment without the stress; Holidaying on a vessel like this may now be in reach

WHY SYNDICATION? Most commonly, the reason you want to own a boat is to enjoy the experiences it affords you. When I walk down on a dock, I often see families getting ready to go out on their boats, with smiles on their faces and full of anticipation of the day or several days of adventures ahead of them. That’s what I love. A boat keeps families together to have some quality time. Kids have to detach from their phones and iPads for fear of losing them in the water, so they have time to defragment. They acclimatise to boat life and start to enjoy the water, use kayaks and canoes, and try to catch dinner. Boats create beautiful experiences and memories that last a lifetime. Like seeing a pod of dolphins up close, playing beside the boat as it cruises out of Sydney Harbour or migrating whales breaching. Even being moored in the backwaters surrounded

134

Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2022

by nature has its appeal as it’s a break from busy, normal lives. Sometimes it’s relaxing, sometimes exhilarating. But to do all of this, you need a boat and not everyone is able to have their own. While not getting out as much as he would like to, Andy still relishes the chance to take his family out on a boat or a sneaky couple of nights alone with Belinda in the idyllic reaches of Pittwater, NSW, so understands this need for his clients. “The problem is working within the industry, whenever I’m on a boat, I am always looking at ways we can improve the service we offer our clients. That said, I’m always very refreshed when I’ve been away for a few nights on a boat. “Many of our Sydney clients like that they can launch from The Spit and within 10 minutes be anchored in the tranquillity of Bantry Bay or Sugarloaf Bay and be totally

immersed in the Australian bush. They still have mobile coverage and can shoot back to the marina in case they need to attend to a business or family matter. The same goes for our growing Gold Coast client base who can be in the magnificent Broadwater in minutes or anchored up in Jumpinpin for a lazy lunch or sunset dinner. We even have options in Hamilton Island, where you can extend the exclusivity of the island further by exploring the waterways and islands on your time,” he said. Clients who have been with BSA from the start are revelling in the fact that they can roll into larger boats or vessels that better suit their lifestyle each time they renew without the hassle of buying and selling. According to Andy, the boats they own now are far beyond the expectations they had ten or so years ago.

CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT:

Skippering won’t be a problem with support from BSA; All sorts of fun can be had; Relax in your choice of elegance

“THERE’S A STAFF MEMBER ON CALL 24 HOURS A DAY IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG — THAT’S A REAL PEACE OF MIND FOR ANY BOAT OWNER.” BSA BENEFITS Being a client of the largest share boat company has its advantages. With over 45 staff, 40 permanent contractors, and a warehouse with a million dollars’ worth of spare parts on the shelf, if something does go wrong it can be sorted out very efficiently so the owner can continue their boating experience. Andy’s aim is to maximise clients’ experience. The foresight to have partsat-the-ready is born out of BSA’s years of experience. Despite impeccable maintenance, parts will invariably wear out and accidents will happen. However, it’s how the problems are dealt with that matters to the customer. Having the resources at hand is vital. There’s a staff member on call 24 hours a day if something goes wrong — that’s real peace of mind for any boat owner.

envy need not be a thing; BSA provide training when you step up in vessels; Just one of the boats on offer

“IF AN OWNER IN SYDNEY WANTS TO USE A SIMILAR BOAT ON THE GOLD COAST, BSA WILL MAKE SURE THERE IS A SKIPPER ON BOARD FOR THE FIRST DAY.” HELPING HANDS The BSA experience isn’t just about the boats. Each owner undertakes a three-day intensive training program with BSA’s experienced captains. Even experienced boat owners have to do the program, with many coming away amazed with new knowledge they have learnt from BSA’s training. Andy believes that the better training service BSA provides at the beginning, the better the customer experience will be over the term of the syndicate. For example, if an owner in Sydney wants to use a similar boat on the Gold Coast, BSA will make sure there is a skipper on board for the first day, so the client gets a local understanding of the different waterways and places worth exploring. “This orientation day is critical in helping

136

Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2022

clients get the most out of their time on the water. Instead of worrying about navigating tighter waterways than they are used to, they have an expert on hand for the first day out. It’s about creating a more enjoyable experience for the owners, wherever they choose to spend their days on the water. It’s a level of service not often seen in traditional boat sales. Learning by misfortune with boats such as BSA’s is very costly and sometimes embarrassing. We try to prevent that via the training provided by the team,” he said. “There will still be accidents but at least we can negate rookie errors. But even if something does happen the BSA crew will spring into action to get the boat and you back to dock safely and rectify the situation ASAP. It is the luxury that comes when you have the resources that BSA has in place,” he continued.

FEATURE: PROFILE BSA

BURGEONING BSA Not content with the exceptional service that Boating Syndication Australia offers clients locally, BSA is opening up a base in Majorca, Spain. The plan is to offer Australian and European owners the option to swap days and access aboard their respective vessels. Not content with overseas expansion, Andy wants to scale BSA locally with boats at every major city, targeting first Perth, Melbourne, and Adelaide before expansion into major European port cities. Andy explains, “The goal is that a client based out of Sanctuary Cove, with a Riviera 6000 for example, could fly to Europe and swap with an owner over there who has a similar-sized boat, say an Azimut 60. They can spend some days in Australian waters while our client enjoys experiences in Europe. That will increase the usage of both boats. Instead of sitting idle at the dock, they will get to motor around. Thus, using more fuel, purchasing supplies, and needing updated maintenance, all the feeder industries will get more work and the industry as a whole continues to grow.”

Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2022

137

COMPLETE PACKAGE Andy says, “We provide a full backup service, 24 hours a day to our clients. If anything goes wrong, we’re there to help. So, you are not only paying for a boat, you are paying for the experiences, the lifestyle and the backup service. A lot of people don’t realise the amount of work we put in behind the scenes. When a family comes down to the dock, set for a great day out, the only thing they have to worry about is if they remembered the sunscreen — and we’d supply that anyway! Fuel is taken care of, systems checks are done, and we can even stock the fridges and pantries. And of course, we can look after clean up if the client is time-poor. For us, it’s about providing the complete walk-on, walkoff experience for our boat owners.” TOP TO BOTTOM:

Andy Young sees a bright future for the business

“YOU ARE NOT ONLY PAYING FOR A BOAT, YOU ARE PAYING FOR THE EXPERIENCES, THE LIFESTYLE AND THE BACK-UP SERVICE.” GOLDEN GROWTH It is amazing to think that over 50 per cent of enquiries are coming out of the Gold Coast region. Many are people who have moved from Sydney and Melbourne to the warmer climes of the Gold Coast and surrounds and immediately want to explore the immense and beautiful waterways. BSA has three locations in south-east Queensland to cater for this level of enquiry and demand.

WIDER NET Apart from the Gold Coast, Brisbane, and multiple sites in Sydney, BSA has opened an office in Airlie Beach. The first catamaran in the BSA fleet — a Lagoon 44 — is heading there, soon to be followed by a 90ft and 80ft LongReef, an 82 Sunseeker and 6000 Sports Yacht Riviera, meaning there will be a range choice of boats up in the region for winter escapes. Rushcutters Bay has 20 vessels, and Cabarita Point Marina also has a selection of boats. The Princess Street Marina at Pittwater and also locations at Sanctuary Cove, Marina Mirage and The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron also have an extensive range of boats.

DOMETIC Boat performance is incredibly important, and a new offering from Dometic is likely to prove popular with avid boaters. See that new technology and more this year in the Pavilions.

Dometic Marine will debut their first Asia Pacific trade stand at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, and are proud to expand their footprint this year with their first independent booth. Dometic will place a spotlight on products recently released into the Asia Pacific Market including the Standard and Adaptive Trim Tab systems, the Boating Industry Top Products Award Winning Xtreme Power Assist and the Spot Zero Water Maker, alongside over 50 other products across the Dometic Outdoor, Enerdrive, SeaStar and Sierra brands, helping to further establish and expand Dometic within the Marine market. We spoke with Dometic Product Manager Shane DeWitt, lead Product Manager in the development of the new Dometic Trim Tab system. Proudly innovated and manufactured in Canada and United States, this is a product line that offers unique features not seen before in the industry. Can you tell us about the innovation and development of the Dometic Trim Tab system? As a boater myself, I found the traditional trim switch not intuitive at all when it comes to controlling the pitch and roll of your boat, so we needed to come up with an intuitive way to manage the planing of your boat. The engineering team worked together to innovate a Trim Tab system that exceeds customer expectations; this is where the unique, intuitive dial control and its ease of use came into play. For those people reading this who may have never given much thought to Trim Tabs can you explain their main benefits? The main purpose of Trim Tabs is to quickly bring your bow down so you can see the horizon and what is in front of you. A Trim Tab system will help to level the boat in any situation, which will give you a more comfortable ride. In addition, you will gain

better fuel mileage. In your opinion, what is the most unique feature of the Dometic Trim Tab system? Hands down it’s the intuitive dial controller. There is nothing like it available today and it removes the guess work from levelling your boat. The controller allows you to easily adjust the pitch and roll to get your boat on plane quickly and efficiently. A programmable favourites button makes for effortless operation. The favourites button on the controller makes it easy to get on plane with a touch of one button. What influence did Dometic’s electric steering technology have on the development of the system? That is an excellent question. Again, being an avid boater myself I thought there had to be a way to automatically plane your boat as you give more throttle and eventually settle into cruise mode. We developed a CAN based trim tab system that could communicate with shift and throttle and steering All you need to do is activate the hole shot mode by pressing the favourite button and when you give it throttle the boat will quickly plane itself. Much like electric steering which makes boating more comfortable and provides sports car steering, the Trim Tabs make your entire boating experience more enjoyable. These two combined leads the electrification charge by eliminating all hydraulic fluids. These Trim Tabs have been referred to as a “next-generation smart trim tab system”. Can you explain to us what makes them a next-generation smart system? When it comes to the standard Trim Tab product offering, it’s the dial controller and the fact you can save a recallable favourite tab position for easy planing. Its intuitive and by a turn of the dial and a button push, you can adjust the pitch and roll of your boat. The adaptive trim tabs system is groundbreaking as there are no other CAN based systems on the market that can communicate with other CAN based components. By communicating with shift and throttle we can do some real useful things. For example, we talked about hole shot mode. Another important function is when you place the shifter in reverse, it will automatically retract the tabs which helps a great deal. The intuitive dial controller used with the adaptive system easily adjusts the pitch and roll while keeping your eyes on the horizon.

Can you explain the decision for a full electric system over a traditional hydraulic system? And do you see this as the future? Electrification is where everyone is going today, and we can leverage our know-how to design and manufacture durable and reliable trim tab actuators. Environmentally it is the right thing to do. Electric steering, Electric controls, electric trim tabs. Our customers expect Dometic to be a leader in innovation and the environment and that is what we must do. There are three ranges of Dometic Trim Tabs, Standard, Adaptive, and Optimus Adaptive. Can you explain the differences and benefits of each system? What makes it different are some harnesses in the kit that are used to connect to the Optimus steering and joystick system. They are both a smart CAN based systems that provide hole shot mode and automatic functions like auto retract when in reverse. This is the premium trim tab system. The standard Trim Tab system would replace existing basic systems in the market. It would be the volume system in the marketplace. The standard system uses a dial controller and provides intuitive precise control to level your boat very quickly. In addition, it has autoretract upon key off. Where are Dometic marine products manufactured? Can you tell us a bit about the facilities and what makes them different? Dometic Marine has many facilities however the Trim Tab components are made in Vancouver, Canada, and Pompano, Florida, USA. The Vancouver facility consists of 3 buildings with more than 500 employees, totalling 19,000 square meters. This facility alone has over 100 patents which has led to award winning products. We have leading edge technology in the manufacturing facility as well as engineering, supply chain management, IT, quality, finance, basically all the departments needed to run a successful innovative business. The Pompano facility invested a significant amount of capital in a new laser machine and feeder for the trim tab manufacturing business. Pompano main business is Marine AC, refrigeration, and ventilation. There are 235 employees and 9,600 square meters. Pompano also have very similar departments as Vancouver to support their business. You can check out the Trim Tabs systems and other Dometic technology at Booth 245 in the Pavilions.
