elcome to the Sydney International Boat Show, Australia’s largest celebration of boating. This year’s event is the 53rd edition and has great significance following the extraordinary disruptions the global pandemic caused over the past two years. For many, the 2022 show is a welcome opportunity to once again, see first-hand the latest in boats, boating equipment and accessories, and to immerse themselves in the boating lifestyle. The show is also a wonderful time to catch up with family and friends who share a passion for all things boating. Boating has boomed since 2020, proving to be the standout choice of leisure activity for people across Australia. During a time when we had to stay close to home, thousands discovered what many of us have always known, that boating offers an escape like no other. One where you have the freedom to choose the destination, when to go, and who to spend time with. Socialising in popular anchorages or experiencing the beauty of quiet seclusion, far away from the crowds. Being in and around water has long been recognised as being good for the mind and the body.

SYDNEY INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW
People of all ages, genders and abilities can participate in boating, with options available in all sorts of craft suitable for leisure and sport. Best of all, there's a boat for all budgets, ranging from small paddle and sail craft, to runabouts, fishing boats, tow-sports, right through to yachts and cruisers of all sizes. Alternatively, if you’re time-poor and want a ‘step-on, step-off’ option, you can simply join in a boat share program, or even just hire one for the day. Providing this opportunity for people to attend and experience a diverse and interesting range of marine products in this stunning location would not be possible without our valued industry members. Their commitment helps to keep boating at the forefront and promote this fabulous lifestyle; I sincerely thank them for their continued support. I would also like to make special mention of our event partner in safety, Transport for NSW, for its role in our ongoing efforts to promote safe, responsible, and enjoyable boating. The BIA wants everyone to have a fantastic time on the water, to return home safely to their families, and to share their great experiences. Our partnership in educating waterways users helps to deliver this. I wish you all a wonderful time at this world-class event and look forward to seeing you out on the water soon.

SW boasts some of the finest navigable waters, which are enjoyed by more than two million people each year. The Sydney International Boat Show draws thousands of keen boaters to Sydney, and we hope you have time to explore some of our fantastic waterways while you are here. Boating has always been a popular pastime; however, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, we have seen more and more people return to boating or take up a range of watercraft activities as new hobbies. With that in mind, safety on our waterways remains the priority of the NSW Government. Through our education campaigns we continue to equip skippers with information to mitigate any risks they may face on the water and encourage them to always make safe decisions. We also continue to deliver a wide range of infrastructure projects through the Boating Now Program, to provide safe access at boat ramps and upgraded facilities.

Maritime safety is a shared responsibility and our continued collaboration with other government agencies and industry organisations such as the Boating Industry Association (BIA) is helping us to build a safety culture around boating, ensuring it remains enjoyable for all. I thank the BIA for their efforts and congratulate them for putting on this fantastic event. I encourage you all to visit the Boating Safety Zone and speak to the various organisations who dedicate their time to keeping us all safe on the water.

ydney is a water city. Even before its so-called “discovery” by Europeans, our Harbour was for thousands of years a meeting place, a valuable food source and a place of ritual for Indigenous tribes. It remains all those things to this day, for all of us. So it is a special pleasure to welcome you all — Sydney locals, interstate and international visitors alike — to the 53rd Sydney International Boat Show, back after a two-year hiatus caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. During the pandemic lockdowns, we were reminded of how important outdoor recreation and access to public open space and water is. People took to the Harbour in new ways — not just on boats but kayaks, paddleboards and even swimming. We are working with Sydney Water to improve water quality in the area to encourage even more of this activity. The 2022 Sydney International Boat Show celebrates everything that can be enjoyed in, on or around the water. There’s something for all ages, with a fantastic range of watercraft, new equipment, in-pool demonstrations and family-friendly entertainment on show, at the open-air Event Deck. Inflatable pools at ICC Sydney offer demonstrations of water sports equipment and fun for young visitors with bumper boat rides The show also gives important information on using and caring for

our precious marine environment. The Sydney International Boat Show is a great reason to come and visit the city and while you’re here, I encourage you to stay a while — have a wander around and enjoy all the city has to offer. Take our Light Rail around to other city vantage points like the Quay and the Opera House, and walk up to the headland to appreciate the monumental sculpture we recently unveiled there; bara was created by Indigenous artist Judy Watson paying homage to the fishhooks used by Indigenous women as they fished the Harbour's waters. It’s a reminder that Sydney always was a maritime city. So once again, on behalf of the City of Sydney, welcome to you all.

hange at Integrity yachts runs apace with the boats themselves — slow and deliberate. Getting somewhere slowly is a badge worn proudly by Integrity’s owners. It’s part of the fun. Sit back and enjoy the ride, the view and economical flow of diesel through the single engine’s injectors. Over the last decade, the Australian arm of Integrity has delivered around 100 displacement cruisers to owners who generally fit the older demographic. For the last 10 years, the lines of the Classic range have remained just that — classic. But in recent times a younger group has discovered boating and, for many of these, the traditional style wasn’t alluring. To achieve a broader appeal the builder realised a redesign was in order and sought the youthful eye of Gold Coast naval architect, Misha Merzliakov. Integrity’s sister brand, Whitehaven, also evolved from Merliakov’s keyboard, as have
several Avant-garde designs across the world. Because the hull design is integral to Integrity’s success, changes were sensibly restricted to the profile above the waterline, and the SX series was launched. The 340SX was the first of the new line, and we reviewed that boat on Sydney Harbour last year. A 380SX followed closely, and the 460SX on review here is the latest in the range. When we drove the 340SX, it impressed with its more modern look, but the changes are even better suited to the latest version's longer waterline. In the larger boat, the new lines look even leaner and sportier. Compared to the Classic 460, the SX has a higher deck, more freeboard and a prouder bow. A full flow of dark side windows complements the more modern look and improves the views and airy feeling once on board. Gone is the trawler-inspired receding sheerline,

replaced by a straighter contour that drops amidships and flows cleanly to the stern where a black stripe gives the illusion of a lower side deck. A raked and more prominent radar mount seem less of an afterthought and, on the test boat, the roof-mounted davit and inflatable add a serious cruising tone. I’m told a flybridge version will be coming down the track but, in the meantime, the flat roofline looks ready for the second floor. Construction is a solid fibreglass build, but stylised plank lines in the gelcoat recall the traditional timber boating era. Like all in the Integrity family, the 460 is a heavy displacement boat with a full keel protecting the propeller. From a moderate flare upfront, the lines underneath run to a beamy and relatively flat transom that maximises stability at rest.

WELCOME ABOARD
In true cruiser style, side gates give access from a high dock, but most will choose the substantial swim platform down the back when tied up on a floating berth. A stainless steel rail adds to the safety and can be removed when swimming, and a drop-down step helps reboarding. A storage box against the transom
Enjoy maximum stability at rest thanks to a relatively flat transom; Integrity has created a more modern look for this displacement cruiser to appeal to a younger crowd
BOAT TEST
Integrity 460SX
has a padded seat, and I imagine it should be a popular spot for fishing. It's a quick step up through a central gate to the roomy and comfortable cockpit where cream vinyl lounges wrap around under the extended hardtop. A glossy teak table with holly inlay is built on sturdy stainless steel legs and drops down to make a bed for relaxing in the fresh air or for occasional guest accommodation. I imagine this would be an excellent overnight proposition at a balmy tropical anchorage. The bottom section of the twopiece door slides open while a large hopper window and the top part of the door lift to give unfettered opening to the saloon. Tinted dropdown clears all round the cockpit combine with the open interior to create a large enclosed area and turn the cockpit into an all-season prospect. Provisioning for longer voyages or time onboard is essential, and plenty of attention has been given to storage on the 460. Seats around the cockpit have stowage below, including a large drained icebox, and a vast lazarette under the sole should satisfy most owners.
TAKE A WALK AROUND
Access to the bow along both side decks is easy, even if the walkways' rear section is a little narrow at the rear arches. The skipper gets direct access for better views and quick access to lines when docking. Three steps lead up to the big open area at the bow, and with a non-skid deck and high rails, it would feel safe even in a bit of a roll when anchoring. Timber-clad steps lead up to the cabin top where there’s room to negotiate the four solar panels to the AB inflatable. A 250kg davit will make launching a breeze, and for short hops between anchorages, there’s room to store the little tender on the swim platform.
MORE POWER
Almost every Integrity launched has had a single engine and generally of modest output. Speed isn't necessary to most owners, and the heavy displacement design has hull speed limits that need to be respected. The 480hp Cummins on our review boat is a fair increase over the standard 300hp Volvo, and everyone was keen to see what difference it would make.
But we are jumping ahead, so let’s have a look at the engine room layout. It's pretty easy to check. A hatch in the floor opens for inspection, and it's a short drop to the single Cummins sitting on mounts over the keel line. Thick insulation overhead keeps noise down, and basic maintenance points such as Racor fuel filters, oil level and water strainer are relatively easy to reach. The Cummins is a neat fit being only 100mm longer than the standard Volvo, and with a ZF gearbox weights are similar to the Swedish offering. A 400Ah house battery is charged from either the engine or the solar panels, and 240V appliances can run from a Victron 3000W inverter or a 7kW genset. But the bow and stern thrusters are hydraulic, powered by pumps aft of the gearbox.
A NAUTICAL LIFESTYLE
Beautifully executed satin-finish teak joinery and a holly-inlaid teak floor gives the interior that nautical ambience that cranks any stress levels down a notch. You’re aboard, and it’s time to relax. A white Corian-topped counter returns along the rear window and extends right along the portside so there should be no complaints about galley bench space. Appliances include a two-burner Westinghouse electric cooktop and an EFS inverter microwave, both

of which are powered through a 3000W inverter. If I had a complaint, it might be that refrigeration could be a bit light on with just a compact compressor freezer and fridge under the bench. The impressive storage options continue with a line of cupboards overhead and ample cabinets and drawers with steel runners and positive catches below the bench. All the hardware looks top shelf, and I like the way lids for the sink and rubbish bin fit snugly into place and have their own slots cut into the bench when not needed. Seating for six or so around another beautiful teak table takes pride of place to starboard. This space can also convert to a bed, so with two doubles below there’s plenty of encouragement for the extended family to join the crew. The comfortable lounge has

plenty of room to stretch out and a 32in television hooked to Fusion Sound should help while away some hours of serious cricket watching. Roman blinds drop down for privacy and side windows slide open to catch the breeze.
TWO CABINS BELOW
Five steps adjacent to the starboard side helm lead below to the accommodation area. Most Integrity boats of this size will have a twocabin, two-ensuite layout, but the owner has chosen to do away with the main cabin ensuite to include office space instead. Double sliding doors from the passageway give the master cabin a roomy, open feeling when they are left open or privacy when closed. Timber panelling and teak and holly floor continue the traditional theme and clothes should remain fresh in
the cedar-lined wardrobe. Although high ports and a skylight bring in abundant light, there are no views. To port of the hallway is a roomy ensuite that serves both cabins and as a day head. A moulded vanity has a rectangular ceramic sink with an upmarket tap, while overhead is a timber cabinet with mirror and an opening hatch for ventilation. The freshwater Jabsco toilet flows to a 400L holding tank, and the full-size shower includes a glass door, a teak base and another opening port. Guests should feel well spoilt in the bow cabin. It even has its own access to the ensuite. With a high ceiling and generous beam, there’s a roomy feeling and the island double bed has excellent access even as the shape of the hull folds around. High ports and an overhead hatch stream light, which reflects from the cream vinyl wall lining.
THE HELM
With two proper helm chairs, the skipper is bound to have company on the voyage. Clad in white vinyl, they are comfortable and command excellent vision through the raked screen and to the sides. Ahead is a well laid out dash built into a teak cabinet and a large diameter leather-clad wheel. Centre stage on a high panel is a 16in Garmin Map XSV display for navigation, radar and sounder, while alongside are the VesselView for engine readouts, VHF and autopilot. A lower panel has switches, and ancillary control panels and everything is thoughtfully laid out for ease of use.

end of our day's review was child’s play. Thrusters each end matched with Twin Disc EJS joystick control ensured movement was safe and trouble-free. On top of this, the Express Positioning System (EPS) kept the boat in place at the push of a button while lines were readied or secured. Gliding along at the leisurely six-knot speed limit on our journey down the channel to the Broadwater, the 460SX was in familiar territory. The Cummins ticked over at a lazy 1250rpm consuming a miserly 5L/h. Fuel evaporates quicker than that in Queensland on a hot day. Steering was light and precise through the sometimes-narrow openings between traffic, but mind you there was plenty of time to think about it. Out on the open expanses of the Broadwater towards the Gold Coast, we saw two-way wide open throttle average speeds of 12 knots, so there is extra on tap if you need to make a run for shelter if the weather turns foul. But at these higher revs, fuel use jumps to 90L/hour, the engine starts to get noisy and vibration increases. Ten knots at 2600rpm is a comfortable, fast cruiser for a range of just over 300nm with 10 per cent in reserve from the 1500L tanks. But back off two knots, and you can double the anticipated distance.
THE WRAP
Many Integrity owners have been bluewater sailors, and that group is used to a slower pace. At around seven knots expect to see destinations over 1000 nautical miles away or a full day on the water with a $50 fuel bill. Pricing starts at $795,000. To be realistic, though, there are options
AT AROUND SEVEN KNOTS, EXPECT TO SEE DESTINATIONS OVER 1000 NAUTICAL MILES AWAY OR A FULL DAY ON THE WATER WITH A $50 FUEL BILL
that serious long-distance seafarers would need. Our review boat had an extensive list of extras that tipped the price over the million-dollar point as tested. Even so, I think this is a good value in today's market for a vessel of this size and capability. The 460SX is made for extended time onboard, and there are plenty of Integrity owners who travel for months at a time. But, because operation of the boat is so simple, you can also ease out of the pen for a quick afternoon to go fishing, diving or just to watch the sun go down. There’s a lot to like about the Integrity brand. I really like the traditional, nautical ambience, the leisurely, comfortable pace and the ease of operation. But for me, the economy of the miserly fuel use and single-engine maintenance costs is where the 460SX shines.

I
n 1985, yachtsmen and adventurers the world over had a big year. Against a background of international political turmoil, records were set for everything from speed to size, not to mention some wild trends in interiors. At home, the nation watched Apollo take out the Sydney to Hobart again, the fourth edition of what’s now known as the Volvo Ocean Race started from Southampton, and that same year, in another corner of the world, a
future international legend was quietly born. European and American boatyards may be considered the historical homes for development of cruising yachts, but in 1985, founder Tony Fleming was looking to the future. At the time, the business of building yachts in Taiwan was only really a few decades old, yet the local industry was already developing a reputation for quality and finesse. Along with business partner Anton Emmerton, Fleming handpicked the

Tung Hwa boat yard as the facility in which to create the very first Fleming 55. Tung Hwa is located in Kaohsiung, on the south end of the island. Kaohsiung is today broadly thought of as south-east Asia’s hub for yacht construction. Local yards in Taiwan produce the majority of the 50-plus foot yachts in the world today. While Kaohsiung is the thirdbiggest city in the country, back in the ‘80s it was still on the way up from its roots as a tiny port town — and Fleming Yachts was going to be a part of the rise, with the evolution of their new range.

Fleming 55
The original mould for this model was built for a 55-foot yacht, but the first eight of these were actually 50 feet, having slightly shorter cockpits. By the mid-1990s, this had been extended out to 55ft, and by the late ‘90s over 100 had been delivered to customers worldwide. The very first arrived in Australia in 2001, marking the launch of the brand here.
It’s easy to see why this model was such an early customer favourite when you look at the technical flexibility. With a range of 2000 nautical miles at eight knots, she can still hit a top speed of around 18 knots, though most owners tend to stick around ten for longer passages. Of course, the design has also come a long way since the very first boat was completed in 1986. Hundreds of incremental improvements have been made, incorporating the latest in advanced yachting technology to produce a modern yacht that’s evolved with the times — and that’s without even touching on the addictive aesthetic. Back in 2012, Trade-a-Boat magazine noted “the class isn’t intangible; you can see it in the depth of the paintwork and the quality of the fittings. Take one step aboard through the wide gate in the side bulwark and you’re hooked forever — much like sliding into the back seat of a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost”. Over 250 boats have now been produced for owners across the globe, and over a dozen of those are cruising in Australia.

Fleming 75
The first Fleming 75 was launched in 2000 as a result of customer demand for a larger model, and years of input to push the engineering excellence and effortless elegance up a notch. The evolution didn’t stop there; 10 years later, the design was upgraded to a 78 with a slightly longer hull and keel to reduce fuel consumption and increase range. While the Fleming 78 is considered the ‘ultimate Fleming’ by owners around the globe, we’re yet to see any gracing Aussie waters.

Fleming 65
Not content with resting on the laurels earned by the 55 and 78, the next Fleming model was launched in 2005. It’s a pretty good sign when the very first of a new model is snapped up by the founder himself. But even without the well-documented adventures of Tony Fleming’s Venture, there was enough demand for five 65s to have been delivered to customers within the first year. It probably helped that Yachts magazine voted the Fleming 65 best in her class in the world for 2006. Quite apart from the international recognition, engineering obsessives have appreciated the considerable upgrade in interior and deck space compared with the 55. Further testing and evaluation of refinements by Tony himself on Venture, led to an impressive list of new items available on production models. The brand’s official VR tour of hull 65-051 is a must-see if you’re ready to daydream about being miles away from the pandemic in an unimaginably spacious master suite.

SYDNEY INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW
The very first Fleming 65 landed in Australia not long after, in 2010. In fact, it was brought in by the same lucky owners who’d acquired the first 55 here. Today, there are four Fleming 65s around the country. In 2006 Tony Fleming stepped up to his next adventure. Fleming handed over the reigns in Kaohsiung to his nephew, engineer Adi Shard, his daughter Nicky, and experienced engineer (and yacht captain) Duncan Cowie, who’d joined the team in 2001. From her new home in Newport Beach, California, Venture explored destinations around North, Central and South America, from BC and Alaska, down to Mexico, the Galapagos, through the Panama Canal and back up the US east coast to Nova Scotia. At the time it was called “the world’s most extensive sea trial”, leading to many of the improvements made to the 65 range since first launch.

Fleming Yachts History
Fleming 58
Fleming Yachts had to do something big to mark their 25th anniversary in 2013. So, with a ton of research and input from dozens of owners, they created the Fleming 58. This new model represented the perfect balance between the strengths of the 55 and 65. However, to get it right required not just a few adjustments, but re-engineering from the keel up. Naval architects Norman Wright and Sons, based in Brisbane, were selected for their expertise in hull design and tank testing. The adorable 1/12th scale model was built and tested in Tassie, making the Aussie contribution to Fleming heritage more significant than ever. While the first full-sized Fleming
58 didn’t arrive in here until 2017, there are now a couple of them in Australia. When we checked out the 58, we noted the builder mentioned that “the design of the hull and increased waterline length will deliver fuel consumption similar to the Fleming 55" but that “a 50 per cent increase in tankage over the smaller sibling greatly increases the 58’s range”. It’s not just the extra tankage that’s stacked on this model. The cockpit is bigger by a couple of square metres, there’s crucial extra room in the saloon, and space for a freezer, fridge and BBQ. Of course, with a variety of layout options, it’s up to new owners how they make the most of this space.

Fleming 85
With the latest model in the Fleming range, the 85, engineers had the incredibly modest mission of creating “literally the finest possible ocean-going pilothouse motoryacht, in every respect.” So, there's no slowing down for this pioneering team with less than 30 years’ production experience on the board, but hundreds of years of combined experience and expertise, not to mention extensive CFD technology, thorough finetuning and testing skills to ensure the performance lives up to all promises. When Trade-a-Boat reviewed the 85 last year, they noted that, “the Fleming 85 has come a long way from the downeast lobster boats from which it borrows nautical styling”. Not just because of the deck space or the flexibility of getting your 85 with either an open flybridge or enclosed pilothouse, depending on your entertaining preferences. It’d have to be a pretty fancy lobster boat to have this kind of cream leather upholstery, flawless blonde wood panelling and tasteful finishes. It’s not just meticulously engineered, it’s classy. The exclusivity is real; there are only a few of these in the world at present, and there's one on order for a lucky owner in Australia.

Meet the Fleming Yachts Australian Team
The Fleming 85 is the latest in a line that represents a dedication to classic looks, while being at the cutting edge of design and equipment, but it’s certainly not the end of the line. Tony’s voyages on the Venture II continue — check out the Fleming Yachts YouTube channel for some serious cruising inspiration. Fleming owners continue to post some of the most stunning content from all corners of the map, while delivering further performance feedback that’s going straight into next-generation designs. There are currently over 340 Flemings worldwide. By the end of this year, 27 of them will be cruising in Australia. With a growing base of loyal owners and a string of international accolades, it’s well on its way to becoming a contemporary classic in its class.
Fleming Yachts’ Aussie contingent consists of Egil Paulsen and Samuel Nicholas. They’re supported by a team of contractors who help deliver specialist services to Fleming owners around the country. Both are long-term Fleming followers, Paulsen the proud owner of a 55 himself, Nicholas having cruised aboard a 55 in Scandinavian waters many times. They’re proud to have been part of bringing the current 23 Flemings to Australia. The Australian team maintain strong relationships with the current unit that run the building operations in Taiwan. Up-to-the-minute communication helps them offer the highest levels of personal service and technical insight to clients. It’s perhaps telling that Paulsen has a close relationship with founder Tony Fleming, and introduced him to director Duncan Cowie. STABILITY’S THE KEY GYRO STABILISERS ARE NO LONGER A LUXURY ADD-ON WHEN PURCHASING OR REFITTING A BOAT; INSTEAD THEY’RE A MUST-HAVE ITEM FOR SAFETY AND COMFORT.
W
e had a chat with Captain Tim Dean, owner of a 47' O'Brien Sportsfisher, about gyros and why he chose the ARG stabiliser. Tim owns Calypso Fishing Adventures and arranges deep sea marlin fishing charters anywhere along the east coast of Australia. Interviewer: Tell us a little about yourself, what you do and the challenges you face. Tim Dean: I’ve been running fishing charters all along the east Australian coastline for the past 30 years, from the giant black marlin off Cairns to the blue marlin, black marlin and striped marlin in Port Stephens. I've fished all over the world and had the pleasure of running some very fine vessels in all weathers. Nothing compares to the Great Barrier Reef where we fish for the biggest fish that swim, and do it in some of the roughest weather anyone could ever fish.
I JUST START THE GENSET AND PUSH ONE BUTTON — AND THERE IS ONLY ONE BUTTON. THIRTY MINUTES LATER WE'RE STEADY AS A ROCK.

Feature ARG Gyro Interview Interviewer: What research did you do into stabilisers? Tim Dean: In recent years, gyro stabilisers started to make their way into the fleet, with several vessels a year making the investment. Tall tales of performance are told, along with disastrous breakdowns and loads of downtime: the Barrier Reef will expose your weakest link and send you home packing. One thing I did note through the peaks and troughs of reliability with other brands of gyros was when they were working it was a whole new world of comfort and safety. I was intrigued. After several years of watching, learning, long discussions and research, I settled on the ARG. Interviewer: Can you tell us why you picked the ARG stabiliser? Tim Dean: Loads of information, but in the end it came down to a couple of key factors. If your gyro performs on the Great Barrier Reef, it’s solid! The ARG has the fewest external moving parts — the bits that go bang. They are air-cooled; too much aeration when fighting fish in rough water does not suit watercooled gyros. Easy installation, designed for commercial application and unmatched warranty and backup service were important too.
Interviewer: Can you give us some feedback of your experience with the stabiliser? Tim Dean: It has changed my life, literally. It performs above all my expectations. Now we can fish harder, longer and in even rougher weather than we ever thought possible. We can enjoy remote out-of-theway anchorages never attempted without a gyro. I can't believe I went all those years without one. Interviewer: How do you use your gyro?
Interviewer: How likely are you to recommend ARG Stabilisers? Tim Dean: I urge everyone I know, and anyone who asks me — they have to try it out. I wished I'd installed a gyro sooner, but I may not have ended up with the ARG if I did, so for that fact alone, I’m glad I waited. Interviewer: Thanks for taking the time to talk to us. Tim Dean: No worries - it’s been a pleasure.
Tim Dean: I just start the genset and push one button — and there is only one button. Thirty minutes later we’re steady as a rock. You don't hear it running either, like other brands with hydraulics. It's silent.

BOLD BRAZILIAN COMING FROM A PERHAPS SURPRISING PLACE, THIS SCHAEFER 510GTS PROVES IT HAS THE GOODS TO GO UP AGAINST THE BEST OF THEM

chaefer Yachts’ 510GTS is the latest iteration of the Sport 51ft family that was released in 2017. Our test boat featured the company’s three-cabin, three-head internal fit-out that offers generous below-decks accommodation for a big sports cruiser. Schaefer Yachts are designed and manufactured in Brazil, which is a generally unrecognised economic giant in South America. Derided in childhood ‘Biggles’ books as, “the place where nuts come from and nuts go to”, Brazil has a GDP larger than Australia’s and the country is a major food and manufactured goods exporter: examples are Mercedes-Benz and VW cars — and Schaefer Yachts.

Schafer 510GTS
THE BUILDER
Founded in 1992 by yacht designer Márcio Schaefer, Schaefer Yachts is the builder of world-class luxury sport yachts up to 25m in length. In late 2016, Schaefer signed an ongoing styling agreement with Italian design studio, Pininfarina, famous for penning the world’s most beautiful Ferraris. In 2018 it released an intriguing ‘wheel-less’, joystick-only 580 Ferrari. Schaefer employs more than 1000 specialists and uses stateof-the-art production equipment, exemplified by a giant Bermaq SG-22 computer-controlled milling machine. This five-axis machine produces precision boat plugs, from which highly accurate moulds are made. The shipyard also uses vinyl ester resins in state-of-the-art vacuum infusion equipment, which makes the boats lighter and more robust than polyester construction. The powertrain supplier is Volvo Penta and Onan turns diesel into electricity.
CONSTRUCTION
From the drawing board — or, more appropriately these days, the CAD-CAM screen — the 510 sports and flybridge models are based around the Volvo Penta IPS poddrive system. In the case of this hull, the IPS orientation goes as far as realigning conventional engine positioning. Twin-engine installations normally have the engines set beside each other on parallel bearers that align with the keel, but the Schaefer 510 has the engine bearers slightly inclined towards each other at their forward ends. This orientation narrows the forward width of each engine, allowing ample working space and also providing additional hull space for a small port-side ‘crew’ cabin and an 11.5kVA, starboard-side, Onan generator. Narrowing the engine-space width also gives more hull-shape freedom and the Schaefer 510 has a deadrise of 17-degrees at the transom — a compromise between seagoing ability and hull volume.
Our test boat was powered by a pair of 550hp Volvo Penta D8IPS700 7.7L, common-rail diesel engines, with twin-entry turbos and superchargers. They were coupled to IPS15 pods with twin counterrotating propeller legs and Volvo Penta’s excellent Electronic Vessel Control systems.
SETTING OFF
Our dockside inspection of the 510GTS began in the interesting engine room, where we found servicing access straightforward and labelling of critical components very good. The USA is Schaefer’s largest export market, so English instructions have received priority. Access to the engine bay was via an aft deck hatch, but it was interesting to note a much larger deck panel that could be removed, without cutting into the teak planking, should it be necessary to extract the generator or an engine. Getting aboard from a pontoon dock meant a same-level step onto the huge swim platform, but

this platform raised and lowered electro-hydraulically, so dock variance was easy to adjust for. The swim platform is notable for incorporating teak steps that provided safe access from the aft deck. As the platform lowered, the staircase emerged and the steps remained horizontal, regardless of the platform height. It also has a load rating of 160kg, so strapping a tender or a few water toys in place wouldn’t be a problem. On the aft deck, two steps down from the saloon deck, is a large BBQ module with an electric-element, hot-rock cooker and it's flanked by twin ice boxes sitting atop a pair of large storage bins. The teak-planked saloon deck features an L-shaped lounge and extendable centre-pedestal table. It also had an inwale section that lowered electrically to become a side balcony. To its side, a remote joystick control panel allowed easy docking from the boat’s starboard quarter.
A powered awning extends over part of the saloon deck, from the aft end of the carbon-fibre targa roof. Also on the saloon deck is a covered companionway, leading into a small ‘crew’ cabin that features a single bed, sink and toilet. I reckon kids would love this hideaway if the boat wasn’t crewed, but it could also be used for storage space.
THE INTERIOR
Three-part, sliding stainlessframed glass doors separate the saloon from the flush-deck area. Removable carpet covered the FRP saloon sole and FRP interior flooring, giving apartment-like underfoot comfort and encouraging visitors to go barefoot indoors. ‘Apartment-like’ is certainly the Italian design theme of the saloon and the below-deck cabins. Cream leather trim, soft wall coverings and gloss-grey lacquer gave a luxurious feel and are, I think, a better choice for the Australian market than the

somewhat garish, diamond-pleat leather and blue-highlight trim used on some US-market boats. A large sink with a folding mixer tap and an electric induction cooktop with adjustable pot fiddles hides beneath grey-lacquered lids along the starboard side. To celebrate culinary successes, a U-shaped lounge and extendable table are opposite. Drawers and cupboards throughout the boat had push-action, hidden catches, a nice level of sophistication. An oven and microwave are found under the Silestone bench, and two fridges are hidden behind cupboard doors. I feel the fridges could have been larger, but maybe the Brazilians don’t drink as much beer as my mates! Schaefer suggest the boat is intended for up to 16 people for day cruises and they’d easily be accommodated on the lounges and a few deck chairs. At the forward end of the saloon, the starboard steering station is purposefully narrow — although comfy for two really
good friends — to maximise saloon and companionway space. Pullout panels give quick access to the windscreen wiper motors and the behind-dashboard electronic connections. The helmsperson has adjustable seating and a clear view of three display screens, with the standard IPS joystick control, engine speed levers and essential function rocker switches close to hand. The small, leather-trimmed, car-like steering wheel is well-positioned, and the entire saloon roof can be opened to the sky, extending the open-air feel of the boat. Schaefer offers three 510 cabin options: a two-bedroom, two-head, with two common areas; a twobedroom, two-head with central common area and a three-bedroom, three-head arrangement. The test boat has a three-cabin layout that might be somewhat cramped but turned out to be quite habitable. In this layout, the forward head doubles as a day-head and the central cabin has two single beds. In all options, the forward and
aft cabins have queen-sized island beds, and the aft cabin also has a lounge. The sunken aft cabin is the largest but is also closest to the engine firewall, so would perhaps not be the most relaxing. Sleeping in this cabin with the generator running to operate the air conditioning wouldn’t be a problem for some, but sensitive souls might prefer the forward cabin — in the right weather of course; all cabins have opening ports, set into bonded glazed hull panels. With the aircon, cooking, refrigeration, water heating, four TVs, awning, four bilge pumps, four flushing toilets, anchor windlass and powered decks all being electric, the Schaefer 510GTS was well equipped with batteries — one 150Ah 12V each for engine starting and a total of six 12V house batteries totalling 695Ah which should allow for reasonable use without firing up the Onan. The hot water system is also electric but can have input from engine coolant transfer while the engines are operating to reduce electrical load.

SYDNEY INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW
UNDERWAY
My short evaluation of the Schaefer 510GTS was conducted on Sydney Harbour, on a rare, sunny autumn day with enough through-heads swell and cross-breeze to set up some typical chop. The boat cut a stunning picture, thanks to its blue-white, two-tone colour scheme. The dark blue hull colour disguised the glazed hull inserts and also reduced the visual height of the 510GTS, giving it a real sense of purpose and speed. Two-up manoeuvring out of a very tight d’Albora Marina berth was eased immensely by the IPS joystick control, allowing unfussed mooring-rope handling. Powered side windows at the steering station allow easy communication between crew and helm person. Once clear of no-wash areas the softly burbling diesels were unleashed, with common-rail injection, low-rev supercharging and high-rev turbocharging doing their part to see planing speed achieved in around eight seconds. The hull feels effortless, the steering wheel action is precise, with no delay in response and handling is excellent. With the sliding roof opened there was freshair flow, but no wind buffeting. Schaefer claims a cruising speed of around 24 knots, but the ‘sweet spot’ in this particular boat was around four knots lower than that, with a fuel burn in each engine showing 130L/h.
WOT operation registered a shade over 27 knots, but should be 32 knots, according to Schaefer’s specs. Overseas independent testing has confirmed Schaefer’s claimed figures, with several recordings of 32.5 knots at 2800rpm. A closer inspection of our test boat’s hull showed considerable shell build-up, following Sydney’s wet, warm-water summer. Schaefer Yachts Australia’s national sales manager, Drew Watney, told me that the clean-bottom boat had easily achieved 32 knots out of the box.

B
oating is all about freedom. Getting on the water and enjoying our fabulous waterways with family and friends. A great day however is a safe day and there are some leading boating apps available that can truly help deliver a safe, responsible and enjoyable time on the water. In NSW the Marine Rescue NSW log on/ off app provides boaters with a valuable safety net. When you log on with Marine Rescue NSW, they know where you're heading and when you're planning to return. In just a few minutes you can be on your way, knowing more than 3000 trained and equipped search and rescue personnel are watching out for you. The Marine Rescue NSW app also offers you a live safety tracking option, automatically updating your position every 30 minutes. Knowing where to start searching for you if you’re missing can mean the difference between life and death. There’s also a range of valuable safety tools and information in the app: • Local tide, weather and sea conditions; • Boat ramp locations and popular fishing spots; • Safety checklist; • Emergency call procedures and more. The Marine Rescue NSW app is a great addition to your marine radio and EPIRB. But remember, it doesn’t replace these items and you should
always ensure you’re carrying all required equipment to request help in an emergency.
GET APP-DATED
Download the free app today from the App Store or Google Play: www. mrnsw.com.au/app While you’re about it, the Bureau of Meteorology and several other providers offer very useful weatherforecasting and tide-predicting apps too. Having an idea about what the rest of the day holds may influence where you go, when you leave and crucially, when you return.
Testing time
At the start of every season, it’s worth taking the time to check and test all your safety equipment and replace anything which is beyond its recommended best-by date, has
been opened and partially used or has been damaged over the previous season. Besides the radio and EPIRB, things to check especially include fire extinguishers, First Aid kits and emergency flares. Having these and other pieces of safety equipment on board but not knowing how to use them makes them effectively useless. Take the time to find out how they work, take a First Aid course and perhaps train up another responsible adult also likely to be aboard. Brush up on navigation and radio procedure skills too, if appropriate. Stowing safety equipment in a logical, accessible place helps when you have seconds to act, perhaps with adhesive vinyl pictogram labels to alert other people to their location. And, before setting off on the water, make sure everyone on board knows what to do and not to do when away from land. Find Marine Rescue NSW at Stand 600 in the Halls. Visit marinerescuensw.com.au
APP INNOVATION
Deckee is a free boating app used by more than 300,000 boaters so far and earning the support of several state governments for its innovative capabilities. The Deckee app is built to be a swiss army knife for anyone spending time on the water – it’s the ultimate companion app. It’s a situational awareness tool, an activity tracker, a marine weather dashboard, and its a source of local knowledge, heatmaps, real-time alerts and official information. Deckee also supports further education by delivering a growing list of online boating courses via its
education partners, such as Above & Beyond Boating. From marine radio use through to safety and sea survival (naturally such courses have practical in-person components where appropriate). The app was accelerated into the public domain after winning the Transport for NSW Innovation Challenge. Download from the App Store or Google Play 'Deckee Boating'.

you feel safe and make the most of your time on the water. This is a reality with Boating Syndication Australia — the BSA. We caught up with Boating Syndication Australia’s CEO Andy Young to find out how boating can be a cost-effective and timeefficient proposition in boat syndication.
THE BSA BACKSTORY
Andy Young has been in the marine industry for 16 years; with his wife
Belinda, they run Australia’s largest boating syndication company, BSA. The company has over 100 registered boats across six locations in Australia; these range from an indulgent Sunseeker 82 to a sporty Schafer 375, plus a number of popular Riviera vessels along the east coast. Syndication makes complete sense, as Andy says: “Most people never use their boats as much as they dreamed they would before buying them. Like a gym

GOLDEN GROWTH
It is amazing to think that over 50 per cent of enquiries are coming out of the Gold Coast region. Many are people who have moved from Sydney and Melbourne to the warmer climes of the Gold Coast and surrounds and immediately want to explore the immense and beautiful waterways. BSA has three locations in south-east Queensland to cater for this level of enquiry and demand.
WIDER NET
Apart from the Gold Coast, Brisbane, and multiple sites in Sydney, BSA has opened an office in Airlie Beach. The first catamaran in the BSA fleet — a Lagoon 44 — is heading there, soon to be followed by a 90ft and 80ft LongReef, an 82 Sunseeker and 6000 Sports Yacht Riviera, meaning there will be a choice of boats up in the region for winter escapes. Rushcutters Bay has 20 vessels, and Cabarita Point Marina also has a selection of boats. The Princess Street Marina at Pittwater and locations at Sanctuary Cove, Marina Mirage and The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron also have an extensive range of boats.
membership, you sign up thinking you will use it frequently and then life gets in the way. "After a period of time, you realise you haven’t used it. Buying a boat outright is just the same. Unless you’re a tinkerer, need an escape pad or are retired, you probably won’t get to spend enough time on your boat to justify the purchase. "Every marina has boats sitting there being under-used because the owners don’t have the time to use them. "With BSA, we can offer a bigger boat, a more affordable boat, and ways to maximise your precious time on board,” he said.
IF AN OWNER IN SYDNEY WANTS TO USE A SIMILAR BOAT ON THE GOLD COAST, BSA WILL MAKE SURE THERE IS A SKIPPER ON BOARD FOR THE FIRST DAY.
their boats, with smiles on their faces and full of anticipation of the day or several days of adventures ahead of them. That’s what I love. "A boat keeps families together to have some quality time. Kids detach from their phones and iPads for fear of losing them in the water, so they have time to defragment. "They acclimatise to boat life and start to enjoy the water, use kayaks and canoes, and try to catch dinner. "Boats create beautiful experiences and memories that last a lifetime. Like seeing a pod of dolphins up close, playing beside the boat as it cruises out of Sydney
Harbour or migrating whales breaching. Even being moored in the backwaters surrounded by nature has its appeal, as it’s a break from busy, normal lives. Sometimes it’s relaxing, sometimes exhilarating. "But to do all of this, you need a boat and not everyone is able to have their own." While not getting out as much as he would like, Andy still relishes the chance to take his family out on a boat or a sneaky couple of nights alone with Belinda in the idyllic reaches of Pittwater, NSW, so understands this need for his clients. CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: A variety of vessels are available; Holidaying on a vessel like this may be in reach; All the enjoyment without the stress
WHY SYNDICATION?

According to Andy, the boats they own now are far beyond the expectations they had ten or so years ago.
BSA BENEFITS
“The problem is working within the industry, whenever I’m on a boat, I am always looking at ways we can improve the service we offer our clients. That said, I’m always very refreshed when I’ve been away for a few nights on the water. “Many of our Sydney clients like that they can launch from The Spit and within 10 minutes be anchored in the tranquillity of Bantry Bay or Sugarloaf Bay and be totally immersed in the Australian bush. "They still have mobile coverage

and can shoot back to the marina in case they need to attend to a business or family matter. "The same goes for our Gold Coast clients who can be in the magnificent Broadwater in minutes or anchored up in Jumpinpin for a lazy lunch or sunset dinner. "We even have options in Hamilton Island, where you can extend the exclusivity of the island further by exploring the waterways and islands on your time,” he said. Clients who have been with BSA
Being a client of the largest share boat company has its advantages. With over 45 staff, 40 permanent contractors, and a warehouse with a million dollars’ worth of spare parts on the shelf, if something does go wrong it can be sorted out very efficiently so the owner can continue their boating experience. Andy’s aim is to maximise clients’ experience. The foresight to have parts-at-the-ready is born out of BSA’s years of experience. Despite impeccable maintenance, parts will invariably wear out and accidents will happen. However, it’s how the problems are dealt with that matters to the customer. Having the

resources at hand is vital. There’s a staff member on call 24/7 if something goes wrong — that’s real peace of mind for any boat owner.
HELPING HANDS
The BSA experience isn’t just about the boats. Each owner undertakes a three-day intensive training program with BSA’s experienced captains. Even experienced boat owners have to do the program, with many coming away amazed with the new knowledge they've learned from BSA’s training. Andy believes that the better training service BSA provides at the beginning, the better the customer's experience will be over the term of the syndicate. For example, if an owner in Sydney wants to use a similar boat on the Gold Coast, BSA will make sure there is a skipper on board for the first day, so the client gets a local understanding of the different waterways and places worth exploring. “This orientation day is critical in helping clients get the most out of their time on the water. Instead of worrying about navigating tighter waterways than they are used to, they have an expert on hand for the first day out. It’s about creating a more enjoyable experience for the owners, wherever they choose to spend their days on the water. It’s a level of service not often seen in traditional boat sales. Learning by misfortune with boats such as BSA’s is very costly and sometimes embarrassing. We try to prevent that with the training provided by the team,” he said. “There will still be accidents but at least we can negate rookie errors. But even if something does happen the BSA crew will spring into action to get the boat and you back to dock safely and rectify the situation
ASAP. It is the luxury that comes when you have the resources that BSA has in place,” he continued.
BURGEONING BSA
Not content with the exceptional service that Boating Syndication Australia offers clients locally, BSA is opening up a base in Majorca, Spain. The plan is to offer Australian and European owners the option to swap days and access aboard their respective vessels. Beyond overseas expansion, Andy wants to scale BSA locally with boats at every major city, targeting Perth, Melbourne, and Adelaide before expansion into other major European port cities. Andy explains, “The goal is that a client based out of Sanctuary Cove, with a Riviera 6000 for example, could fly to Europe and swap with an owner over there who has a similar-sized boat, say an Azimut 60. They can spend some days in Australian waters while our client enjoys experiences in Europe. That will increase the usage of both boats. Instead of sitting idle at the dock, they will get to motor around. Thus, using more fuel, purchasing supplies, and needing
updated maintenance, all the feeder industries will get more work and the industry as a whole continues to benefit and grow.”
COMPLETE PACKAGE
Andy says, “We provide a full backup service, 24 hours a day to our clients. If anything goes wrong, we’re there to help. So, you're not only paying for a boat, you're paying for the experiences, the lifestyle and the back-up service. A lot of people don’t realise the amount of work we put in behind the scenes. When a family comes down to the dock, set for a great day out, the only thing they have to worry about is if they remembered the sunscreen — and we’d supply that anyway! Fuel is taken care of, systems checks are done, and we can even stock the fridges and pantries. And of course, we can look after cleaning up afterwards if the client is time-poor. For us, it’s about providing the complete walk-on, walk-off experience for our boat owners.” Find Boating Syndication Australia at stand 146 on the water. Visit boatingsyndicationaustralia. com 77

ith full social diaries, setting time aside to get out on the water is often decided weeks or months ahead – trouble is, the weather gods don’t always check people’s diaries before unleashing the odd storm. There’s nothing like a sudden change in weather to make things pretty dangerous, pretty quickly. Research has shown that poor weather is a major factor in fatal and serious injuries on NSW waterways. Don’t let dicey weather be the reason you don’t get home safely: "If in doubt, don’t go out."

Luckily you can see the latest local weather forecast via bom. gov.au or your favourite weather app. If you do decide to go out on the water, log the trip with Marine Rescue either by calling the local Marine Rescue NSW base on VHF Channel 16, or by using the free MarineRescue App. It’s a good idea to make sure you’re prepared for all weather conditions by having the right safety equipment. Obviously that should include lifejackets for everyone on board, warm clothing and wet-weather gear, sunscreen, sunglasses, sun-protective clothing,
hats and drinking water and of course the legally required lights and safety equipment on your vessel. It's also important to monitor the weather for changes, including any warnings during your trip. Again, marine radios, phone apps and the internet are all invaluable for this. If the weather looks like it’s turning foul during your trip there’s no shame in changing your course or returning to shore. Weather systems can be deceptive and might appear to move slowly or be in the distance, but don’t hang around if things take a turn for the worse.

Marine Safety Personal watercraft (PWC) such as jet-skis, are slightly different; they must have a PWC behaviour label displayed where it can be seen by the driver, showing rules which apply to driving a PWC, such as keeping safe distances from people and other vessels. The driver and passenger(s) must wear lifejackets on a PWC at all times. In remote areas and on open waters, it's also suggested you carry a kill-switch lanyard, a torch, a first-aid kit, a fire extinguisher, two communications devices like a marine radio and a phone in a waterproof cover, plus a wetsuit and a helmet for each person on the craft.
the pull-cord is free and accessible. When you get home from a trip, rinse the lifejacket with fresh water to clean it and remove the cartridge if applicable. Once it’s dry, reconnect the cartridge so it’s ready for use at a moment’s notice: that may be all the notice you get. Inflatable lifejackets require extra care and must be serviced annually or according to the maker’s instructions. Sometimes you can self-service your lifejacket using instructions on the maker's website; otherwise, visit lifejacketwearit.com. au to find your nearest lifejacket service agent and set automatic servicing reminders.
TOWING
Tow sports like wakeboarding and water skiing are popular — who doesn’t love a day out on the water towing the kids on inflatables? However, as towing is often done at high speeds, it’s even more important to know and follow the rules so everyone stays safe. When towing, there must always be a driver and an observer, the exception being when tow-in surfing on a PWC, where there’s just a driver. There’s a lot happening when towing someone behind a vessel, so both the driver and the observer must keep watch.
LIFEJACKETS
The simplest and most effective safety gear aboard any craft is surely the humble lifejacket. As they’re worn all the time, they’re exposed to the elements and tough as they are, they can be damaged by wear and tear from the elements, especially the sun. Before heading out, there are a few simple pre-trip checks you can complete which only take a minute or two. Check there are no visible signs of wear and tear, that all clips are functional; ensure the CO2 cylinder is not pierced, rusted or corroded and is screwed in hand tight. For auto-inflating lifejackets, check the cartridge is hand tight and that it’s still in date and be sure ABOVE: As the skipper of a vessel, the ultimate responsibility for safety equipment on board rests with you

Marine Safety Before anyone gets in the water, do a lap and check for hazards like floating debris, sandbars or snags. Take extra care on unfamiliar waterways or in areas which have recently been flooded. Everyone involved — driver, observer and the person being towed — must wear a lifejacket and be under the BAC alcohol limit. It's well recognised that the only time water and alcohol mix well together is in a glass, on land. Always drive at a safe speed when towing, even when returning to shore. Some speed limits do apply: 10 knots if you’re 16 years or under, unless as part of an organised event; 60 knots when the person being towed is under 18; 60 knots when anyone on the vessel is under 18. FIND THE RIGHT BOAT
Begin by narrowing down your choices. Ask yourself questions like: “What do I want to do with a boat?" Trailering? Overnighting? Entertaining? Fishing? Water skiing? Answering that will make the next choices much easier. Then, ask yourself “Where do I want to go boating?” “Who is going with me?” “How many people should the boat carry?” “Will we be going offshore?” The answers to these questions will help guide what boat is right for you. Narrow your choices to a short list of boat types and make short lists of features you need, features you’d like and features you want to avoid. Go to discoverboating.com. au/get-involved/boat-buyers-guide/ boat-types/ for a brief description of the myriad of categories of vessels available today. And finally, the biggest one: “How much money am I willing to spend on boating?” Remember it’s not just the boat itself, but incidentals like a trailer, registration, licences, mooring and safety equipment which need to be considered too.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT DEALER
Once you’ve narrowed down your category choices, the real fun begins. It’s time to go shopping and, much like buying a car, you can buy privately, with all its challenges. You will want to find the right boat-brand-dealer combination. Ask similar questions of each dealer and try to find someone willing to invest time in helping and guiding your choice to what you want — not what they have to sell on the day. Of course, if you’re buying much more than a fishing tinny, you should consider engaging a surveyor where appropriate. Having a professional assess a prospective purchase for seaworthiness and to identify potential issues before you buy will give you confidence, both in the showroom and on the water.

FOR SOME, ONE AFTERNOON IS ENOUGH; FOR OTHERS, IT MIGHT TAKE YEARS. THE RIGHT TIME TO BUY A BOAT IS WHEN YOU'RE READY.
Pop the question It's usually a good idea to involve your partner in the process
CHECK OWNERSHIP
When buying a second-hand boat, it’s wise to ensure that the boat is free from any financial interests that could lead to its repossession; the seller owns the boat outright. You can do this by checking the Personal Properties Securities Register (www. ppsr.gov.au).
CONSIDER WARRANTIES
Investigate the warranties for every boat on your list; they’re valuable and should influence your decision. Some are transferable, which may become a selling point if you decide to re-sell. Find out what the warranty covers (engine, hull, components, accessories, service etc) and ask what happens if something fails. Any warranty which may still exist on a late model used boat can usually be transferred to the new owner. A good way to do this is to ask for references. Also check model serial numbers with the model year before parting with your money.

KEEP A LOG
At the boat show and as you visit local dealerships, document everything: take pictures and notes, or record your reactions. Involve your family or partner and listen to their observations. Use your short list of features important to you to qualify your choice. Make up a chart and use it to rank your top choices.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
For some, one afternoon is enough; for others, it might take years. The right time to buy a boat is when you're ready. Boat shows often offer ‘show specials’ to enable people to buy there and then; if you know what you want, it’s a good time to negotiate a bargain. Have a checklist like the BIA's Boat Buyer Checklist to tick off key points to consider before buying a boat. When you do the deal, don’t forget to sign the ownership papers, and to insure your new pride and joy.
TEST DRIVE
Just as you’d test-drive a car, you should take a boat out. The way it handles and feels on the water is key to your satisfaction. Bring the family along and try the boat in the conditions you’ll be using it.
LEARNING ABOUT YOUR NEW BOAT
Boating isn’t difficult, but it is a skill. Signing up for a training course to learn the basics is never a bad idea. Some dealers will offer training and most marinas, and dealerships have a network of instructors you can hire to show you the ropes on your own boat. Some details will need practice: docking, launching and so on. Just take it slow and practice.

The program is funded from boating licence, registration and other fees collected by Transport for NSW and since its inception in 2014, has delivered more than 250 boating projects boating projects.
MARINE FEATURE WATERWAYS
BERMAGUI
This is a scenic port with breakwater entrance, so follow the leads carefully when coming from seaward. The name is Aboriginal for ‘canoe with paddles’ and Bermagui is 60km north of Eden, 23km south of Narooma. Facilities in the harbour are good, with slipway, fuel, repairs, and berths when available. The NSW Government has committed $660,000 through the Boating Now Program to upgrade the Bermagui Boat Ramp. Works will include reconstruction of the existing three lane boat ramp, pontoon extension and car park upgrade. Anchoring in the river, outside the harbour, and downstream from the road bridge is possible for shallow draft vessels at certain tides. Best known for its offshore reef, game and sport fishing which yields quantities of marlin, shark, and tuna, Bermagui is also the centre for a range of fine shore and estuary fishing opportunities. Coastal lagoons and tidal lakes south of the port offer bream, mullet, whiting and luderick, while there are beach and rock fishing spots down to Baragoot Point. Bermagui has a busy commercial fishing port and angling facilities. Photo credit: Destination NSW
BOTANY BAY
Famous as the arrival place of Captain Cook, Botany Bay is the nation's second-largest container ship terminal that is popular for fishing, water-skiing, jet-skis, kite surfers and many sailing clubs that run races across its windy waters. The Foreshore Road Boat Ramp at the container terminal is a good place to enter the bay with lots of parking spots, as well as a fish-cleaning station. Sheltered anchorages are few and subject to all wind directions. The southern shores are largely national park with limited anchoring; the oil storage terminal at Kurnell uses a long jetty. Up the Georges River, improvements have been made to the old Ferry Reserve ramp with a handy new jetty and kayak ramp at Illawong, and at the nearby Como ramp at Scylla Bay.

BROKEN BAY
Just a three-hour motorboat ride north from Sydney but a world away, thanks to its surrounding National Parks, Broken Bay is one of NSW’s most idyllic and accessible spots for boating, kayak-camping and fishing. This region encompasses the boating areas of Pittwater, Hawkesbury and Gosford's Brisbane Water. Broken Bay is open to the easterly winds, which makes it ideal for yachting, but it’s also sheltered from the bite of the south-going East Australian Current, allowing safe and secluded cruising. There are public moorings throughout, and popular bays include America's Bay and Coal & Candle Creek. Small marinas are at Cottage Point, Bobbin Head, Church Point and Brooklyn on the Hawkesbury River. Boat ramps are found near most of the small marinas and at some small villages. popular catches include mullet, flat head along the sandy creeks, and mud crabs abound among the mangroves.

GOSFORD/BRISBANE RIVERS
Brisbane Water is a body of water between Broken Bay and Central Coast’s City of Gosford with a challenging entrance. Its five nautical mile entrance from Broken Bay into the Brisbane Water has good depths for yachts but is limited by shoals around the entrance and the 17.4m high water clearance under The Rip bridge. It can be approached from Pittwater or the Hawkesbury River, but go carefully around the Box Head area to avoid wandering into the extensive shoals and breaking seas to its west. There are berths outside the Gosford Sailing Club Marina, the waterfront nightclub at Gosford, Koolewong and in the Gosford Boat Harbour. The Koolewong ramp has recently been upgraded as part of a $750,000 makeover, including new pontoons under the Boating Now program. Local moorings occupy all bays, but visitors can drop anchor outside the moorings with good-holding mud and sand. Looking north to the entrance at Brisbane Water. Photo credit: Kevin Green
HAWKESBURY RIVER
The Hawkesbury River is navigable by vessels of considerable draft as far as the suburb of Windsor, nearly 130km upstream, where a low bridge (11.5m) and rocky shoals limit further exploration. At its entrance, Brooklyn is a house boating hub. Commercial prawn fishers trawl through Broken Bay near here, but the river can suffer from run-off pollution, so seek advice before angling. Upriver, caravan parks host water skiing and have general stores. Fuel is also available at the major urban areas of Brooklyn, Berowra Waters, Wisemans Ferry and Windsor Wiseman's boat ramp and car park is currently undergoing a $2.1m upgrade. Other recent NSW government upgrades include the Tench Reserve boat ramp facility where $800,000 was spent on a new three lane ramp, additional car trailer parking spaces and an extension of the existing jetty. The Governor Phillip ramp's car park is being extended.
The Hawkesbury is ideal for kayaks and has national park camping spots for expeditions. Photo credit: Kevin Green
LAKE MACQUARIE
A mere two hours’ drive from Sydney, it is one of NSW’s best inland boating waterways. Lake Macquarie is 24km long and narrow in places, yet contains twice as much salt water as Sydney Harbour, with far fewer boats among its sheltered bays. Its east side is a narrow isthmus with the Pacific Ocean beaches a walk away and some good fishing and surfing. Inside, it is notoriously shallow, for keelboats at least, yet for motorboaters it's mostly fine. It has major marinas located at both ends, yacht clubs and many boat ramps in between. Campsites also abound, including Belmont Lakeside which is dog-friendly and has a ramp for easy forays across the open expanses of the lake where many trailer boats troll.

MYALL LAKES
Encompassed by the state’s largest wetlands national park, the shallow, sheltered waterways of this lake system are ideal for navigating by yacht or trailer boat. The lakes consist of Bombah Broadwater, Boolambayte Lake and Myall Lake. Offshore only a mile is Broughton Island, a shoal-strewn archipelago popular with fishers who come from Port Stephens. Just to the north is another large and shallow waterway, Wallis Lake and its estuary at the tourist town of Forster. Canoe camping is another way to view the abundant wildlife and former Aboriginal hunting grounds and middens. The main entry points are Hawks Nest, Nerong, Bungwahl and Bullahdelah, where houseboats are available. There are also launching ramps at Mungo Brush, Violet Hill, and Nerong. Facilities for shopping and fuelling are available at Hawks Nest or Tea Gardens at its southern end. There are general stores surrounding the lakes at Myall Shores, Bungwahl and Bulladelah.

NORTHERN RIVERS
The Northern Rivers is the most north-easterly region of NSW, stretching from Tweed Heads at Queensland's border to the southern extent of the Clarence River. It encompasses the famous beach towns of Byron Bay and Ballina, Tweed Heads, Kyogle, Lismore, Casino, and Grafton. The main rivers within the region are the Tweed, Clarence and Richmond rivers. The Tweed is navigable up to Murwillumbah by launches and up to Tumbulgum by vessels capable of passing under a bridge with 11m headway. There is a good slipway and small hardstand area at Terranora Inlet near Boyds Bay. The Clarence River empties into the sea between the coastal towns of Yamba and Iluka which are major yachting havens with marinas and other facilities - just beware of the sand bar entrance in a swell. The Richmond River can be entered from Ballina and offers deep, calm-water cruising, allowing large motorboats to ascend as far as Lismore. Several of the ramps have been upgraded in this area – at Yamba Road boat ramp, the Hickey Island and Witonga Drive ramps. The Northern Rivers region has tranquil inland waterways and dramatic estuaries, as seen here at the holiday resort town of Yamba. Photo credit: Destination NSW
NEWCASTLE
On the south bank of the Hunter River entrance, Newcastle is NSW’s second-largest port and accessible in nearly all weather and sea conditions by coastal cruisers. Primarily an industrial port, recreational boating has become popular since the early 2000s. Berths are available at the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club Marina (NCYC) in Throsby Basin. Anchorage is possible out of the main channel in shoaling water in the vicinity of a ramp and pontoon off Stockton — however, coal ship movements may make it uncomfortable. A better anchorage with good holding is available downstream of the Stockton Bridge. There are dozens of spots along the coast that are designated for land-based recreational fishing. Among the diverse variety of fish are Australian salmon, kingfish, luderick, whiting, bream, leatherjacket and mulloway. Some welcome improvements have been made as well as part of the Boating Now program at the North Stockton boat ramp with new toilets and a car park for 42 cars and trailers.

PITTWATER
The cascading hillsides and myriad bays of Pittwater is a world class boating destination. Photo credit: Destination NSW
Named after British Prime Minister William Pitt, Pittwater is a five-mile-long southern seaward corner of Broken Bay. Ku-ringgai Chase National Park borders most of its western shore with Sydney’s northern beach suburbs on its eastern shore. All bays have berthed or moored craft, making anchoring within them difficult. However, limited anchoring is possible off Palm Beach, Careel Island, and Church Point. Club-owned moorings are in the north-east corner of Barrenjoey and the famous Coasters Retreat where toilets and barbecue areas make this the most popular anchorage. Towlers Bay is another anchorage which may be used by visitors unless otherwise instructed. There is also Careel Bay, McCarrs Creek, Towlers Bay, Currawong Beach and Great Mackerel Beach. Prestigious yacht clubs that are open to visitors include the Royal Prince Alfred and the Royal Motorboat Club where casual berths are available. Trailer-boaters are benefiting from the better facilities at Bayview where the Rowland Reserve boat ramp facility has been upgraded.
PORT STEPHENS AND NELSON BAY
Nelson Bay offers good fishing for mulloway off the marina breakwater and the Shoal Bay Sports Fishing Club where some big marlin have been landed. The Nelson Bay Boat Harbour has courtesy moorings with a 24-hour limit. Anchoring within the harbour is not permitted, however the marina provides some free berths between 0830 and 1700 hours. Other settlements in Port Stephens are at Shoal Bay, where there are more visitor moorings. At the entrance to Port Stephens, there are rock platforms on both north (Yaccaba Head) and south (Tomaree Head) sides, from which tailor, bream, silver drummer, trevally, snapper, and kingfish can be taken. Visitors should be aware that areas of Port Stephens are declared ‘Marine Park Sanctuary Zones’, including parts of the off-lying islands. The NSW Government has invested $1.7m through the Boating Now program to improve the Little Beach boat ramp, including better sea access to the pontoon.

PORT HACKING
Located in the southern part of Sydney city, this meandering waterway of sandbars, shallows and narrow bays is very scenic. It's popular with jet-skiers, canoeists and runabouts fishers. Bounded by Australia's oldest national park to the south, The Royal National Park, it is also the nation's most visited region. A popular getaway is South West Arm that delves deep into the Park, so makes an ideal anchorage. On the Sydney side, the waterway is bounded by busy suburbs, including the major hub of Cronulla. A small passenger ferry runs to the National Park village of Bundeena, known for its artist’s colony and walking tracks. Port Hacking has a formidable ocean entrance, with major offshore shoals which generate large swells. On calm days they are ideal fishing spots for those launching runabouts from various ramps, such as those in Gunnamatta Bay where the Royal Motor Yacht Club is located, along with the Cronulla Marina. SAPPHIRE COAST/EDEN
The Sapphire Coast stretches from Bermagui to Eden on the NSW south coast and is best known for its oysters, stunning beaches, sprawling national parks, and historic buildings. Eden is a paradise for whale watching and has a fantastic whale museum It’s also known as Twofold Bay and is the State's most southerly port. Well-established in the bay are the fishing and wood-chip industries plus a naval explosives wharf. It offers all-weather access and protected anchorages. East Boyd Bay is the best anchorage in the southern quarter, while Quarantine Bay is a useful anchorage in northerly winds as its boat ramp has been recently upgraded. Also in Snug Cove are berths at the Mooring Jetty and Multipurpose Jetty. There are good repair and maintenance facilities in Eden thanks to the fishing fleet working from it. A new wave attenuator is under construction and a marina is proposed.
Sydney Harbour has deep water right to the edges of its myriad bays and beaches, offering hundreds of anchorages. Photo credit: Kevin Green
One of the world’s finest harbours, this busy port offers all things boating although jet-skis and windsurfers are not permitted. The whole harbour, except for Middle Harbour is full of busy ferries, most of which display an orange diamond giving them absolute rightof-way. You can sail to secluded spots such as narrow, tree-lined Bantry Bay off Middle Harbour, or berth in the heart of the city at Darling Harbour Marina. Visitors are recommended to anchor in Spring Cove during northerly weather and Rose Bay during southerly weather, where visitors’ moorings are available. Anchoring is generally allowed apart from in channels, near the naval bases and some environmentally sensitive areas. A major annual boating attraction is anchoring for the New Year fireworks, a rite of passage for Australian boaters. Some recent upgrading of facilities included improvement to the Balmoral jetty at Mosman and the busy Woollahra Sailing Club boat ramp.

SOUTH WEST ROCKS
An hour's drive south of Coffs Harbour South West Rocks is bounded by the Macleay River to the west and the ocean to the east and north. To the south is the surf Mecca of Crescent Head, which has one of the best long-board waves in Australia. Once inside the river, it's deep and there are boat ramps and anchoring spots, but beware of the strong current. It’s a busy spot at holiday time, very scenic and a good place for beach fishing: get away from it all at the secluded Gap Beach, accessible by 4WD only. It's also a popular diving destination because just offshore is Fish Rock Cave. With a 125m-long divethrough tunnel, making it the nation's best cave diving site and a breeding ground for grey nurse sharks. Enquire at the South West Rocks Dive Centre.

SHOALHAVEN AND ILLAWARRA
The Shoalhaven River which flows through Nowra, and the Kangaroo River in Kangaroo Valley are popular for kayaking and canoeing. Water sports are popular at Callala Bay, Huskisson, and Vincentia in Jervis Bay, as well as St Georges Basin, Sussex Inlet and Lake Conjola where the Havilland Street ramp is cited for a $661,000 upgrade. Also, just down the coast at Ulladulla, the Northern boat ramp has been upgraded at the harbour with a new tidal jetty. Jervis Bay is an extraordinary natural harbour with sandy bottom and clear water. It is a spacious and easily accessible harbour but lacks all-weather coves. The entire bay is protected as a Marine Park but fishing and anchoring is allowed in designated zones. In the Illawarra, a new marina has recently opened at The Waterfront, Shell Cove featuring 145 berths, with an additional 125 berths still to be constructed.
